Nope. I think I got invited pretty much from the start of the site, after the mass exodus of us from Reason’s comment section.
I just haven’t checked the site much at all in the past 5-6 months. Since my family got back from our Philippines trip in mid August, both my wife and I have been swamped at our respective jobs.
I work at Fox Sports, and our busiest time of year is late August through January with college football and NFL. Plus, we have the Super Bowl this year, so it’s even busier.
I’ve been so wiped out when I get home that I haven’t had time or energy to do much of anything.
Given all the crazy news the past several months, I know I’ve missed some great content here.

MS: First thing I order at any brewery I stop at is a glass of water (and bring in any empty water bottles to get refilled). Then I’m generally sticking with session beers. It also provides incentive to continue on to the next stop instead of just heading home.

The fact that it did not immediately usher in the Millennium is irrelevant to the question of whether free trade is better than the alternatives. So basically this snark boils down to Winston repeating “Herbert Spencer made a mistake!”, with a Nelson laugh every few hours.
All I said was that trade does not lead to political liberalization. I don’t know how that is controversial. I support trade for other reasons. But that myth needs to die.

Does not necessarily and immediately lead to political liberalization. The fleshed out argument is this:
Free Trade allows the formation and expansion of a middle class.
This leads to an expansion of the portion of the populace that has a stake in political activities, access to education, and otherwise is interested in, and desirous of influencing political decisions.
Eventually, once that portion of the populace is large enough it will take, or be granted political power.
The mistake, if there is one, is in not factoring the difference between an aristocratic/monarchic society with power based solely on land ownership and one where the reigns of power derive from ideological controls. In the land based society the rise of people who are in many cases wealthier than the aristocrats, but who do not hold significant land, more or less automatically shifts power away from the aristocrats/land owners. In a society where power is not tied to land and is at least theoretically not restricted by class the newly wealthy are more easily absorbed into the existing regime.
In other words in 19th century Britain the Scottish mill owner became immensely powerful, but was excluded from political power by birth. Thus the fact that the mill owners were a massive economic power base put them in tension with the existing political power base which eschewed trade, and held its wealth in land. As the relative economic power of industry increased versus that of agriculture the power shifted from the aristocrats to the middle class and society liberalized. In 19th Century Prussia the aristocrats did not eschew trade, in fact they wholeheartedly embraced it and thus the aristocrats did not see an erosion of power due to the economic shift. China is more akin to Prussia in this.
Your theory has literally never been proven to be true.
Trade enriches both participants. That’s it. It’s not some magic that liberalizes totalitarian states. And no one actually believes that it does. If they did then they’d be demanding an end to sanctions against Iran, Russia, and North Korea.
1. I am explaining the theory that Winston is mocking because he tends to leave out nuances in his quest for “Haha you were wrong!” moments. I am not espousing it, although I think it has some limited merits. The portions of the Chinese populace that are relatively free today are larger than they were previously.
2. The people who espouse the theory are not the people pushing sanctions generally.

Since the entire theory is based on taking the specific examples of Britain and Holland and attempting to generalize from a simplistic narrative of the development of liberty in those societies your argument that it has never proven true is somewhat inaccurate. There were clearly other factors involved, but the rise of free trade in those societies is also pretty clearly tied to a rise in liberty, you can argue causality but dismissing the link is IMHO inaccurate.
Look, I use to believe in the theory too. I don’t because, in my opinion (though I acknowledge that you dispute this and that’s a different discussion) there is little to no evidence to support it.
We cannot confuse “wealth” with “freedom”. Trade does make people wealthy. That is the only reason why I support liberalized trade. But, people didn’t become more “free” since the repeal of the Corn Laws (it just reduced costs, as foreign grain wasn’t embargoed under the Corn Laws) or since China joined the WTO. People became “wealthier”. But, in the case of China, people did become more free, because the increased wealth of the nation allowed the state to surveil and suppress on a scale that was previously unimaginable.
I would quibble with your Prussian example, but on the whole we agree that trade makes both participants wealthier. Where I disagree is that it inevitably leads to more freedom. I think that requires a leap of faith that I no longer have.
You accuse of lacking nuance but you ignore all the times I do address nuances that I think have been overlooked: Taiwan and South Korea having authoritarian US-backed regimes in the past, How the Wealthy businesses in China are intimately connected to the Chicoms, how the totalitarian nature of the ChiComs prevents these wealthy educated urbanites from resisting the regime even if they do oppose it, how the urban-rural split makes these wealthy educated urbanite even more dependent of the regime.

You forgot religion. The Scottish Mill owner may not have been an Anglican and was thus excluded from political power on that basis which would have put him in tension with the Anglican Aristocracy.

If someone actually posts “free trade is guaranteed to liberalize country X” then your point can be raised as a rebuttal, but since no one has posted that I repeat, you are just harping on an apparent prediction error by some philosophers.
I was not making a straw man, I was pointing out that even if you had been the sole person tasked with choosing between free trade and sanctions, and you in your predictive righteousness had known clearly that no liberalization would result, free trade would still have been the better choice, so in fact the thing you are harping on does not matter, even a little bit, because the decisions would be the same either way.

A major reason for China’s political liberalization was that it was thought that it would play out similar to Taiwan and South Korea. However they overlooked the key fact that their authoritarian regimes were heavily dependent on US support so when the US withdrew this support in the late ’80s these regimes collapsed. Not to mention that it wasn’t for the US military they would be either ruled by Japan or Communists.

I think the Chiefs will prevail, although after what they’ve done so far I wouldn’t sleep on the Titans. I’d like to see a Joe Montana Bowl though, that seems the most exciting match up.
My co-workers (being in Memphis) are all about the Titans being in the Super Bowl.

I was on a flight once where the crew was giving someone shit about wearing a Detroit Lions jersey. I stepped up for the kid and said, “I’m from Cleveland, I may dislike the city of Detroit, but I can’t mock a fan for cheering for their team.”
I always kinda root for the underdogs so I would absolutely love either of those teams to finally make it. The Browns are plagued by terrible ownership as I understand it. Doesn’t the owner there have the final decision on football matters? That’s never a good sign. The GM and head coach have to have some kind of balance and the owner constantly stepping in fucks that up. It looked like they finally were about to turn a corner and then this year happened.
KS: It’s bad ownership, and just a bad culture in the team. The city is going to back the team regardless of what they did, and we’re going to live with that. But we’ll bitch about every coach, quarterback, and decision made.

I’ve got a young family and most of my relations outside of Ireland live within 10 miles so we are probably here for 15 years, but this place has been steadily ruined. It’s sad, they are in the process of totally destroying a paradise. Once the last is out of high school I imagine we are out.

And you’re right how they’re destroying a paradise. CA is such an amazingly beautiful state, and the climate, especially here is the LA area, is damn near perfect. If I miss snow it’s a two hour drive away. The midwestern autumn is really the only season I can’t find a facsimile of here.
Alas, with the majority of the state govt in the hands of the Dems, and many of those bordering on Stalinists, I’m afraid there’s no saving the state.
Yeah, I think it has gone past the point of no return at this point and it’s an absolute shame. I’d love to see the state split up, but I doubt that’ll happen. If we don’t end up in one of the mountain states it may be somewhere in LatinAm to retire, depending on how the politics go there over the next decade or two.

The Niners were right to trade him, it needed to happen with Steve Young the young talent that had been playing a lot due to Montana’s injuries and slightly erratic play as he aged. He did bring a divisional championship to KC though the first year he played (I think it was only two years before he retired). There were plenty of Niners fans who didn’t like it one bit, even though Young was awesome. I grew up watching the Montana/Young era, it was an incredible run of football that.
Oh, I believe the Niners were right to trade him. I think he should have retired at the top.

There’s a really good documentary about Kurt Russell’s Dad called The Battered Bastards of Baseball. It’s about Kurt’s Dad, who quit Hollywood acting to start an independent minor league baseball team. Lots of colorful characters with Kurt interviewed for parts of it.
SP and OMWC recommended it a couple years ago and it’s worth the watch. Very entertaining even if your not a baseball fan.

If memory serves, Kurt Russell was a pretty good player himself, and could’ve made a career of it if not for Hollywood winning out.
I think Kurt started out as a bat boy for the team and then eventually played on it.

We would be solidly middle class if only I were working. It’s tough for me to accept her working full time when it’s not necessary. I understand her desire to work, however. *Shrugs*

We definitely had some tough years growing up. My mom worked her ass off to put 5 kids in private grade school (none of us wanted to go to private high school; Catholic grade school can have that effect).
My dad was pretty useless. Could’ve been a really successful insurance agent if he didn’t love booze and gambling more.
Still, at the time, I don’t think any of us realized money got tight more often than it should have, given our parents jobs. Most our childhood memories are very happy. I guess kids can be resilient, as I know there are memories that could’ve scarred us if we dwelled on them.
Oh, I’ve got a few of those. Got rip-roaring drunk with an older brother once, and he reminded me of a lot of them that I had forgotten.
By the next day I had forgotten almost all of them again. One memory was so outrageous it stuck with me.
We were decidedly working class, with the added difficulty of Mom having screaming fits about there not being enough money, combined with her having a lot of resentment towards those better off than us. Fun times when my sister married up.
I have experience with both single mom with four kids in America, and one year in Germany with a working Vati and Hausfrau Mutti. I have a pretty strong opinion which one is objectively better.
Look, sleeping with single moms is great. Sleeping with four kids? Little off brand, you know?
I was pretty lucky. Had enough scratch to spend two years as a full time dad when my son was born. After the death of my daughter, I needed it. Wife needed to work to keep sane, so it was ideal. Went into teaching after, so that I was always around for my son until he was about eight. Spent a year as a poker player that paid the mortgage for another year.
As good as a one working parent home? No, but it still gave the boy a full time parent for the most important years. I’ll always be thankful.
Not the same as a kid, but I worked graves when we got our dog so she basically got full attention from both of us and bonded to both. I’d come home in the morning, get the dog up for the park or whatever, she’d go to sleep for a couple of hours, get up with the wife and spend the day with her or just nap with me, then both of us when I’d get up, and a couple more hours with my wife alone after I went to work & before they went to bed. Really made a huge difference in the long term.
I really don’t like the two-working parents dynamic.
Wife and I had a solid argument because she resents not getting a break from the kiddo on the weekends. Stay at home mom doesn’t automagically improve the dynamic. We’ve been low key feuding about this for a couple years.
(not saying that a stay at home parent isnt something that we value, just that we fight and bicker just like everybody else)

Some days are just plain good days. Snowed in with the weather, so we made the most of it. Slept in. Made some soughdough blueberry pancakes. No kids. No grandkid. Nothing happening. Spent the day dancing to jazz albums, and we started the cocktails at noon. Spent an afternoon in bed, then a nice dinner and and an evening of playing all our “guilty favorite” albums, very loud, and ended with dancing and singing “Paradise by the dashboard lights” very loudly and off key together until she passed out and I put her to bed.
Now I’m sitting out in the vestibule with the final cocktail, enjoying a little bit of weed, and appreciating the little things in life.
Not too often that I end my night in a real good place.

Oh yeah. I’ve actually kept myself up okay but the pain meds bunged me up something fierce. I was trying to avoid taking them at all but I fucked up yesterday morning.
Been there, done that. You get behind the pain curve, and you’re in trouble. And when you’re eating enough painkillers that you’re pooping gray chalk, prune juice is a good idea.
