Well, kids, we should have seen this coming.
OMWC and Spud are having such a great time that Spud forgot the website even exists, let alone that he was supposed to be doing anything about anything.
So, here’s an Open Post for your enjoyment. Or your derision. Or whatever. I’m not in charge of you.
Awesome!
Carried over from previous thread:
Jean (Wong Toy Jin) Lumb’s method, which she taught to a dumbass ten-year-old kid (me) back at her signature Kwongchow Cantonese Restaurant in Toronto in 1968:
The vast majority of rices cook best with a ratio of 1 part rice to 1.5 parts water. This is the ratio used for “steamed rice” in most Chinese restaurants and families (it’s actually boiled and then simmered, but “steamed” somehow became the standard name for the method).
Place 1 part rice and 1.5 parts water (by volume, please) into a pot. Unless you suspect the rice to be inadequately cleaned, no need to wash it. (In fact, if you like eating with chopsticks, not washing the rice allows the starch to cause the rice to clump together, which makes chopstick eating easy). Bring to a boil, and then turn down to a simmer, starting your timer at 20 minutes the moment it starts boiling. When you achieve a simmer (approx. 1.5 – 2 minutes later), cover and leave alone until your timer goes off. Then turn off the heat and let the rice sit for another 10-15 minutes (the longer time should be used for rice quantities above 1 cup of raw rice). Then uncover and serve.
Brown rice uses exactly the same ratios, but requires almost 45 minutes of simmering (the bran covering the rice won’t “crack” until almost 25 minutes after starting the boil/simmer, at which time the hot water can finally reach the inner starches of the rice). Then let sit off the heat as above, uncover and serve.
N.B.: If you’re using Uncle Ben’s brown “converted” rice, the timing is the same as for white rice, because the Uncle Ben’s is par-cooked to the point that the bran is pre-cracked.
You can certainly add salt, a small splash of lemon juice and/or a small pat of butter at the beginning of cooking time, if that’s how you wanna roll. You can also use flavoured broths.
“Steamed” rice is so simple, even the 10-year-old dumbass could do it.
Who was Jean Lumb?

“Chinese Canadian woman”
I can’t even summon up something that horrible in my worstest nightmare imagerinatoins.
Sure.
Looks like Cyto was right.
https://www.dreshare.com/lauren-chen/
Ethnicity: half Asian and half Canadian.
Didn’t know Canadian was a race.
Wait, what was I right about?
I mean, not that I’m surprised. I, uh… i’m like right sometimes. Ok, no I’m not. At least, not according to she-who-must-be-obeyed.
Anyway, glad to know i’m right, even if I don’t know what about!
I’ve told this story before, but it bears repeating, mostly because it shows the power of entrepreneurship and guile:
In order to make her restaurant a success, Jean Lumb had to scour the world for good Cantonese chefs (for awhile, her restaurant achieved a five-star rating as the best Cantonese restaurant not only in Toronto or Canada, but throughout North America). Her favourite move was to fly to Hong Kong at least once a year and raid the Repulse Bay Hotel of its finest chefs. Staff at the hotel used to dread seeing her walk in the door, and she was successful in luring their best chefs away from the hotel and to Canada more often than not.
Sadly, Jean died in 2002, and the Kwongchow closed much earlier than that. It was a formative experience for me, and taught me that food from all over the world could be exceptional, not just “okay.”
Wherever she is, I hope she’s eating well right now.
Sounds like quite a gal.
She was. Her husband (adopted the English first name “Doyle,” IIRC) always found her kinda exhausting, but the love between the two of them was obvious.
And man, could she shmooze! My family was plugged into the Liberal Party of Canada back in the day, and Jean Lumb knew everybody that was anybody at the federal level. All the movers and shakers ate at her restaurant, and did deals there after closing time.
I cook my rice that way, but have always done 1:2 rice to water. Will try 1:1.5 next time. Just got a nice smoked ham hock at the butcher today. I’ll make beans and rice next Sunday, with that ham hock and andouille sausages. And bacon.
Yeah, that ratio’s printed on every freakin’ bag of “white folks’ rice” I’ve ever seen. The 1:2 ratio has always produced rice that, to me, seems extraordinarily soft, almost water-logged. I s’pose it’s okay if the final destination’s a rice pudding or somesuch.
Y’know, you’re right about that. I might try this ratio with the Alton Brown method described earlier, tonight. I like it with the Sauerbraten I have.
I know I’ve used both ratios, just never bothered to note which one was better. I’m a slow learner in the kitchen.
The ratio goes down the more rice you cook, starting at 1:2 for a cup, down to 1:1.5 or so for a quart. The larger the quantity the less water is lost due to evaporation.
That’s not been my experience, but if it works for you, OK.
1:1.5 is definitely better for jasmine and basmati.
I cant recommend these highly enough. Catbutt me if you want but they are insanely cheap, fast and easy to use. I cant tell the difference between the results with this cheat and the long, old fashioned method.
https://www.walmart.com/ip/Progressive-Prep-Solutions-Microwave-Rice-Cooker-4-Piece-Plastic-Set/704254878
2 cups water
2 chicken boullion cubes
1 cup rice- I use basmati because the grains are stiffer, less mushy
1-2 tablespoons butter
hefty dash of sweet basil
Microwave on high for 15 minutes.
While the rice is in the oven you can go about other food prep.
Another nifty trick: In a large skillet put two chicken leg quarters, 1 cup rice, whatever seasoning mix you like (onion, bell pepper, celery), a couple of bullion cubes, and two cups water. Season as you like with pepper, garlic, whatever. Bring to a boil then turn to simmer and leave covered for an hour. Cooks the whole chicken and rice meal at once.
Next up: How to make a perfect hollandaise from scratch in 3 minutes
Breakfast in about 12 hours. Im looking forward to reading that.
In a 2 cup glass measuring cup put 1/2 stick salted butter
Microwave on high for 15 seconds
Check the butter, it will be partially melted
Microwave again for 7 seconds
Check – you are looking for melted butter with the bottom of the measure cup just a little warmer than body temp
Microwave in 7 second increments checking between until that is achieved. You can use shorter times if needed.
Toss in two egg yolks and begin whipping. Toss in 1 to 1-1/2 tablespoons of lemon juice along with a pinch of allspice and a pinch of salt.
Whisk and whisk and whisk. If it looks broken, it isn’t….keep whipping. When whipped enough it will suddenly turn perfectly creamy and the right consistency.
If after you have added the yolks and lemon juice and started whipping it still seems too much liquid you can return to the microwave 3-7 seconds at a time. Once you get the hang of this method you can make perfect sauce in 2-3 minutes.
Thanks. Will apply that method in the morning.
I don’t own a microwave but when I did it was way to small to fit a body. One would have to cut it up to microwave at 7 sec intervals.
I don’t think I believe this (I’ve always made my Hollandaise sauce in a double boiler), but I’m gonna try it. I’m seriously looking forward to being proved wrong.
The Joy of Cooking has a recipe for making Hollandaise sauce in a blender:
3 large egg yolks
2 tsp lemon juice, or to taste
ground white pepper, or hot red pepper sauce to taste
salt to taste
process on high for one minute. With machine running, add in slow, heavy stream 1/2 cup very warm to hot clarified butter.
By the time all the butter is poured in – about one minute – the sauce should be thickened. Taste and adjust seasoning.
Similar to yours, Suthen. I’ve never tried allspice. That seems very interesting.
Instant pots make excellent rice cookers. I especially like mine for brown rice, or mixed brown and wild. Cuts way down on cook time and comes out perfect.

Must be some good stuff, you holding?
Well, I know for a fact that many bottles of excellent wine are being consumed this weekend, and probably some so-so wine, as well. Maybe even some downright terrible or corked wines, too, although I expect a corked wine would only get one sip before being dumped.
. . . I expect a corked wine would only get one sip before being dumped.
Sounds like a lack of commitment to me.
It’s an abundant wine cellar. That I’m not enjoying. *sigh*
I hate it when that happens.
(Y’know, if Spud really loved you, he’d send OMWC home with a couple of his finest bottles…).
You’ve got the best sense of humor ever!
**HEAVY SIGH**
Sorry.
/slumps shoulders, walks around in a funk
Wait.
Is my purported sense of humour because:
a) it’s funny that I think Spud loves you? or
b) it’s funny because I’m implying that the wine would survive a trip home with OMWC intact?
I’m such a doofus somedays . . .

Well, shit, you fuckheads, this is all your fault.
Swahili has 3 words for rice: mpunga is rice in the field, mchele is uncooked rice, wali is cooked rice.
Wacha wale, wale wali wao – tongue twister meaning let them eat their rice.
Swahili song about rice with nice pics of Zanzibar, the spice island: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RT7ebEp2stU
Gohan is cooked rice or it can also mean a meal since a meal generally contains rice.
Kome is raw rice.
And raisu is also used. From the English word rice.
Rice IS the meal the sides are called okazu and would be things like fish and vegetables.
Nice looking island, but I’m not sure I’d want to visit a place that boasts it is sans-a-bar.

He has a thing for Claussen Hearty Garlic and was bitchin’ that he can’t find them in NE Ohio. So thanks to that asshole, anytime Im getting pickles I think of him.
*SLD- for some reason recently there has been a run on pickles, and my grocery even put up the “DUE TO INCREASED DEMAND CUSTOMERS ARE LIMITED TO TWO ITEMS”. Im guessing its because more people are home, and making more sandwiches ?

Women hardest hit.
Seriously though, there’s not enough garlic in their regular pickles??? Oy.
I ate them all the time as a kid. My wife didn’t like them so I pretty much forgot about them, and only get them at a deli with a sandwich.
Less so this week, Stock seemed normal, but two shopping trips ago when I was looking for more pickles, all I could get was halves, everything else was gone, and the week before that were none. That and cleaning products seem to be the only remaining holes in the Kroger. Paper products are back including brands, though most of the shelf space is still some generic I’ve never heard of. I gather that’s the factory pumping out average TP and plain wrapping it for everyone (and/or Mexican – we do have some mexican brands plugging holes, like for bleach, as well).

Just got back from dining out by a lake. Main restaurant closed but patio open for eating.
We passed a small tent with a few volunteers registering people to vote and selling pro Trump T-shirts and caps. Haven’t seen anything pro Biden yet, but this is Commiefornia so Dems don’t need to try.
There’s a Trump store at the farmers market. It’s very busy.

2) quit spamming phones with a dozen texts a day claiming to be Newt or Don Jr or whoever
Get back to your roots, Trump. Just cite the constitution esp Bill of Rights. Point out that the left HATES non leftie supporters and woul rather destroy the economy than see Trump stay in power.

Reconstruction of a Mass Hysteria
The Swine Flu Panic of 2009
Swine flu kept the world in suspense for almost a year. A massive vaccination campaign was mounted to put a stop to the anticipated pandemic. But, as it turned out, it was a relatively harmless strain of the flu virus. How, and why, did the world overreact? A reconstruction.
A flu pandemic is like a war: too profitable to ever end.
Surely once court cases surrounding unconstitutional orders start winding their way through courts, COVID theater will have to end.
Emergency orders can’t stay in place forever.
The system is so absolutely rigged, it really pisses me off.
Trump admin decides that immigrants on welfare are a public charge, and thus need to GTFO, instantly we have a nationwide injunction blocking it.
Tens of thousands of American businesses are shutdown for months because of a minor illness, and the courts defer.
You have more faith in the courts than I do. There’s only been one case in Ohio that the State lost in the COVID theater (gyms were able to reopen about 4 days before the State said it was OK).
HAH!
In NH, as long as the governor renews the state of emergency every 21 days, they can go on forever. The legislature can end the state of emergency with a concurrent resolution, but the current legislature’s only beef with Sununu is how he is spending FedBucks.
Yeah…that didn’t work out so well for PA… ?
Yep.
The PA constitution requires concurrent resolutions, exception for resolutions about adjourning the General Assembly, to go to the governor for his approval/veto before they have legal effect. A veto can be overridden.
There is no such requirement in NH that I know of.
As recently as 1984, California and New York could still vote for a GOP president.
When did it get so polarized that there are “safe” single party districts and states?
Media influence? Teachers? General dumbing down of Americans?
It’s bad for the country when any politician considers his seat safe.
I imagine it has always been that way somewhere in the country. I have never seen the country so polarized in my lifetime but I am guessing it was about the same during the civil rights movement and before the civil war.
“Media influence? Teachers? General dumbing down of Americans?”
That’s all the same thing, so yes.
But you have to admit that convincing anyone that these bunch of bubble living brain dead useful idiots are liberal, is one hell of an accomplishment.
In 1980, 66% of Californians were white. In 2010, it was 40%. The Republicans cannot win a majority minority district. You can argue why exactly that’s true, but it is true. It has been the deliberate policy of the Democratic party to encourage immigration from Latin America because it gives them more voters.
Meanwhile, the Republicans give speeches in Spanish and talk about how “Hispanics are Catholics with strong family values, they are a natural Republican constituency!!!” as seen by all the constitutional, free market, limited government republics all over Latin America.
I really hate the conflation of hispanic with non-white.
The Dems have been playing the long con for decades. The ‘Pubs pretend to be above that.
The Republican Party has all but given up on California, and I think that is a huge mistake. One party rule has been an utter fucking disaster for this state. They have majorly screwed up a paradise on earth. This place was much better run when there was a back and forth between the two.
IDK if this was already posted, but this thread from Titania McGrath is great.
MEDICAL SCIENCE IS OPPRESSIVE: IT MUST BE BANNED
That parody isn’t even parody.
I hear some of these pronouncements stated almost literally identically in medical conferences recently. You’re right, it’s so real as to not even be parody.
Agreed. I have definitely heard those thoughts in several contexts. BLM and Anti-racism declare western medicine and the scientific method to be racist.

So, one of my wife’s friends has one of these beasts. That ain’t no dog, folks, that there is a monster and satanic beast.
Corso
Seriously, that one looks like a sweet little pup compared to the one my wife’s friend has, that thing is terrifying, a giant head full of teeth of death. My wife came to me and said ‘What is this monster?!’.
A true Death dealer, he just looks like you would make a good meal, and he’s not hungry…
I have to ask my wife for one of the images of her friend’s dog. That thing has a head 5x the size of the one in that picture, it’s like a giant boar/land shark hybrid, solid pitch black and a giant head full of razor sharp teeth.
I’d like to have one just to sleep on my front lawn. Anyone brave enough to make it past that, you know it’s time to lay down the flesh tearing semi-auto scary black rifle fire.
Little Bobby Johnson knew what that thing is.

Bummer, I cheated and had Tri tip Burgers in the skillet, Yum………
I don’t know what that is. I mean Tri-tip. I know what a skillet is.
Tri tip is a cut of beef. I keep forgetting where in the animal it is.
Bottom sirloin. Triangular-shaped portion of the muscle (hence “tri-tip”). Difficult to find in Canada, I have to order it as a special cut from a local butcher.
We’re having a barbecue this evening (with exactly 10 people in attendance, don’t want to go against Newsom!) and three big tri-tips are going on the grill once the guests are well saturated with cocktails.
Tri-tip is awesome. I’d never heard of it either before moving to CA.
It’s a great cut of meat. The butcher in the farmers market usually has good sized ones ~ 2-2.5 lbs average.
Grill for 4 minutes direct high heat, flip & repeat.
Flip & rotate ~ 8 minutes indirect heat @ 375
Flip & rotate. Check temp. Pull when fat end checks at ~ 125.
Should be right there for those times on a good size cut.
Hrm…maybe skip that last rotate…
Check your farmers market privilege!!
::pouts that neighborhood farmers market within walking distance was cancelled for the season::
But we have ribeyes from Sam’s going on the grill RIGHT NOW. They’re thicc!
Thicc? Cook those cuts until they are demi-rose.
Too fatty. No wait, that tastes like saline.
I was mistaken – the grill is still heating up. You be the judge of their thiccness
I can’t tell
your lighting hides the height.
Yeah, sorry. I was in a hurry, and I hate taking pics with flash. And now the cat’s on my lap, so I’m trapped.
Oh, GT, Tom T and his music machine will certainly be welcome. Gotta warn you, there are some widow ladies that like music. Might even be another picker here too, he probably has a guitar in the trunk of his car, just in case.
@GT
Needs more sidearms.
@4(20) – Thanks! Whether we attend is very much TBD, but I appreciate the info.
@Sean – Yeah, I know, but the only one of mine readily accessible is the 20 gauge.
I did coffee rub treated flat irons on the grill tonight. Oh so tender.
‘Splain Coffee rub please,
It’s and awful technique where you apply ground coffee to good beef and hope you can burn it away before you ruin the beef.
so what’s the point?
If you can keep it dry enough during cooking, you can get a flavor some people like.
Do not use any moist cooking techniques, or it will taste like coffee grounds.
It should be grilled, not cooked.
Next you’re gonna be bagging on Santa Maria rubs, aren’t you?
?
grilling is a form of cooking.
I’d advise against using it in a tartare.
Grilling is a form of white supremacy.
I mean did you ask POC?
What about BIPOC?
What about TRIPOC?
What about QUADPOC?
What about MEPOC?

What about MYPOC?
You fucking racist!
I expected you to ask TUPOC.
Ive seen recipes for it, and someday when I have actual ground coffee I may try it.

Well, in it’s basic form, “cooking” is just (food + heat). The rest is details.
YMMV.

Specifically, this one.
I aim for medium and always hit medium-well.
Did country-style pork ribs tonight though. . . in the oven since it has been raining all day.
“I aim for medium and always hit medium-well.”
two strikes.
*sigh* I know…In my defense high blood pressure runs in my family. I like and intend to continue eating red meat, but I am taking the precaution of actually cooking it in order to do so.
hit medium-well
Miscalculated. It was a 1.9 pound T-Bone, but it was flat. Some of it was medium though.
I hate ruining a steak. Especially since I could sear a steak at 700 degrees for 2 minutes on each side, fling it at my wife, and she’d eat it like a starving tiger.
I like medium rare with crispy fat on the side.
At the bare minimum I want there to be no translucency left. I’d prefer as well done as it can get without drying out.
Then slow is the way to go. If I’m going to do that, then smoking is in order.
I hate ruining a steak.
#Metoo. But medium-rare ain’t my bag, baby.
It was a 1.9 pound T-Bone
I haven’t done one of those before (though I wouldn’t mind trying it, probably have to use the grill to get the ideal cooking temp, despite mostly doing steaks in a cast iron skillet). And I would be afraid I would ruin it, mostly because of the cost of the meat. I generally stick to sirloin, NY strips and ribeyes.
as well done as it can get without drying out
Welcome to the medium-well club, my friend. It does help to use a fattier cut like a ribeye.
Well done does not mean dry. It means the pink is gone.
And yet the president both like his steaks well done and the pink.
That’s a contradiction.
But is it?
(He also puts ketchup on it. #impeach)
That’s not a contradiction, that’s a shocker.
Do you just guess at the timing?
Do you know the “thumb muscle technique”? You touch each of your fingers to the muscle in your palm attached to your thumb. Each one gets successively harder as you go from pointer to pinkie. That’s your scale from rare to well done if you poke your steak.
I learned it from a buddy who used to cook steaks at a steakhouse in his youth.
I heard a similar one, you press the spot between your thumb and index finger, relaxed is rare, loose fist is medium, clenched fist is well done.

This morning we stopped by @USPS Post Master General Louis DeJoy’s house to give him a wake up call. We need the postal service to #DeliverDemocracy this fall. Stop the attack on our mail! #USPSisEssential #USPS2020VOTE
More like deliver DEMocracy, I think. . . And if voting is so important get your lazy, pansy ass to the polls. People have been literally bayoneted to death in order for you to have the freedom to vote. You can risk catching a cold.
He right, inelegantly, that the Dems are blocking any “additional” money – which I hope is just him trolling – by conditioning it on the acceptance of their entire laundry list of New New Deal crap.
They see me trollin’…
President Donald Trump backed Postmaster General Louis DeJoy on Saturday, despite criticism from outraged Democrats about his changes to the Post Office.
“He’s a fantastic man, he wants to make the Post Office great again,” Trump said at a press conference at his club in Bedminster, New Jersey, on Saturday evening.
Leftist protesters gathered at DeJoy’s home on Saturday accusing him of voter suppression.
The president described DeJoy as “a very efficient operator” and said it was not true that he was trying to slow vote-by-mail.
“No, not at all, he would love to see it happen,” Trump said to a reporter questioning his motives regarding the upcoming election.
The postal service sent letters last week warning 46 states that it could not guarantee that all mail-in ballots cast for the presidential election would arrive on time.
Who is the most unprofitable and gets the most gov’t money? USPS or Amtrak ?

I had breakfast at a food truck this morning. Supposedly one of the best in the local tri-county area. I had a sausage breakfast burrito with green chili. List price was $8.75. It was ok. For nine bucks I want the best damn burrito I have ever had. I can make the best damn burrito I have ever had for about $1.50 worth of ingredients. If I wasn’t such a slack ass I would quite my job and be selling burritos for $9 each. Not that I would charge that. That is a stupid price and not one I would pay. I only ate one because I wasn’t paying.

How can tv shows and digital posts be covered by the first amendment when they didn’t exist when the first amendment was written?
J.A. Adande
@jadande
How can high-capacity gun magazines be covered by the second amendment when they didn’t exist when the second amendment was written?
Y’know, it seems to me as a Canadian, that what you really should use as an all-purpose rejoinder to these idiots is:
“How can any of these Amendments to the Constitution of the U.S. apply to you, since you didn’t exist when these Amendments were written?”
If they’re too stupid to understand the implications of that, when the Second Civil War starts, just shoot the motherfuckers. Otherwise they’d be a net loss to whatever survives of the Republic at the other end of the conflict.
That’s the dynamic that some on the left don’t get. The ones who are aware enough to see the conflict coming assume that they’re going to be the ones doing the purges. There’s no guarantee of that. Yokels are just as capable of war atrocities as they are, and will feel just as justified after they finish.
Constitution only protects things that didn’t exist in 1789.
Communism didn’t exist until after 1789.

“On August 15th 2020, More than 1,181 TRUMP Supporters will attempt to break the record for the largest boat parade in history. This is gonna be the MOAB… Mother of all Boat Parades,” according to the Conservative Grounds website, the coffee company that organized the event.
“The current world record according to Guiness [sic] Book of World Records was achieved in Malaysia in 2014 and had a recorded 1,180 boats. In honor of the 45th President Donald J. Trump we will beat the world record in his name,” the site continued.
The event’s Facebook page said, “WE HAVE DECLARED DONALD J TRUMP ESSENTIAL,” and encouraged participants to bring all of their Trump 2020 gear including flags, hats, and T-shirts to “make this a big one !!”

Watching the Blackhawks play the Golden Knights in an empty arena is weird. This doesn’t look like playoff hockey.
But I’m wearing my Seabrook jersey and watching from my air conditioned domicile so it’s the closest to sports I’ve seen in a while.
First I’ve heard of a team called “The Golden Nights”.
Expansion team in Las Vegas.
They got to poach from the top players of all the other teams when they formed. Playoffs ever since.
I hate them.
Oh. Only time I got into hockey was when we swiped Quebec’s team and then promptly won the cup. That must’ve been a tough pill for them.
The only time I care about hockey.

President Donald Trump said he’s considering granting a pardon to #whistleblower Edward Snowden.
I hope so. Even if it is only a political decision to strike at the Obama admin.
I see what Snowden did as waaayyy different than what Manning did. Wholly different motivations and effects.
Use of “Gauleiter” spreads
The owner of an Allegheny County restaurant posted a picture to social media that depicted Governor Tom Wolf and state Health Secretary Dr. Rachel Levine as Nazis.
The image was posted Wednesday and has since been deleted, but it showed Gov. Wolf and Dr. Levine dressed in what appears to be Nazi uniforms.
Robert Portogallo, the owner of Braddock’s Portogallo Peppers N’AT, wouldn’t talk to KDKA’s Amy Wadas on camera, but he did answer questions over the phone. He said it wasn’t his intention to offend anybody.
Portogallo tagged the restaurant in his post, which used Gov. Wolf and Dr. Levine to advertise a lunch special. The post read “Thursday’s lunch special is the Getapo Combo. The Levinie Wienie and Wolfe Waffle Fries for $5.99. Political opinions are free!”
They will ree so much over the NAZI!!!!! troll they won’t notice the ZOMG TRANSPHOBIA.
Got notification that local authorities think a dam near here might break due to the excessive amount of rain we have been getting. I’m nowhere near the potential flood zone but if there are any Glibs in the vicinity of Falling Creek, be aware.
That reminds me, what’s the state of the Three Gorges these days? Last I heard the CCP was trying to hide the fact that it was close to breaking.
I thought about that too. Haven’t seen/heard anything lately. I suspect they fixed it. . . or they didn’t. . .
Patched the dam with Uygher mortar.
Google Earth shows the Dam Wall warping in a bad way, Go China!
China, within the last few days, has admitted to extensive crop failures all along the Yangtze River. That’s bad. As in, they’re gonna be on a shopping spree for food to feed 800 million people for a year kinda bad. Imagine what that’s gonna do to food prices/availability over the next year, compounded by the effects of various governments’ reactions to the pan(dem)ic.
I’m getting the sense that if something happens, like the Three Gorges fails, China will implode.
Like the Klingon Homeworld in the Undiscovered Country?
Some similar old baggage at play.
And a huge chunk of Iowa’s crops just got knocked flat.

Defiance of Gauleiter Wolf’s orders
Some bars in the region are back up and running as a protest against Gov. Tom Wolf’s orders that places restrictions on eateries to curb the spread of covid-19.
But if you want to sit at the bar and have drinks at Al’s Café in Bethel Park, or Piacquadio’s Restaurant and Lounge in Castle Shannon, you have to sign a waiver of sorts first.
“By signing this form I agree that Al’s Café is not liable for any future illness that I may endure. I agree that by signing this I have made the choice and want to sit at the bar and accept all responsibility for my own actions,” reads the half-page form found at the Bethel Park bar and restaurant.
Literally white supremacy, fascism, and sexism.
Speaking of the USPS, my mom just texted me that she heard the box near her had GLUE in it. I know my NextDoor has told me about soda being dumped in our neighborhood one which is why I never use them, but glue? Nasty.

The Smiths or The Smithereens?
Enough with the context-free questions.
Context free or using your brain to figure out the context?
You know it’s context-free. It’s a deliberate trap.

Smithereens

You may have swayed my choice. Was leaning Smiths, but that is one I forgot about. *Grows goatee*

Apples and oranges. Both are great.
^True. Let’s say you got a cassette stuck in your car stereo.
I have replaced car stereos before, it’s not that difficult.
But… I know way, way more Smiths. I have all the albums. I only know the hits from Smithereens, the ones mentioned above. But boy are they hits.
Thanks for bringing up the Smitereens. I had forgotten how much I enjoyed them.
. . In a lonely place . . .
Heard that. It’s nice being old enough to get reminded of great music you’ve completely forgotten about.
I used to take 50 or 60 CDs into work with me and listen when I worked.
I eventually ripped about 100 CDs to my hard drive at work.
I have every CD I own ripped by my computer at home, and yet I hardly ever listen to music anymore.
I need to change that.

A buddy who was in the Navy said that a guy buzzed the tower. He was instantly, permanently grounded.
Well, it does demonstrate poor decision-making ability.
Plus, that is highly controlled airspace to prevent, you know, hitting other aircraft trying to take off and land. So doing something like not obeying the tower’s direction (especially when no one is shooting at you) threatens lives. Plus, it’s insubordination.
Some retarded part of my brain is looking forward to Bill and Teds new adventure.
I think it is the part of the brain that longs for a simpler time…just watching the trailer made me a bit happier.
Mine too.

We need to go back to purple finger dye and paper ballots, scannable by computer, but leaving paper in case of recount.

check this shit out, I still have a lot of money on my Gov Debit card, so I try to buy ammo, no dice, 2 different websites, no joy. I then ordered some cat food with no issue, something fishy there, so I transfered money from on e account to another, idiots
Weird.

Chilliwack was my first concert experience as a stoneling. I would have been 13-14 or so. They were backed by Toronto and Harlequin. It was a really good concert.
How do you know they were good? You were stoned.

They linked an article about a restaurant in China that weighed diners and made “caloric based menu recommendations.”
There was sufficient grumbling that the restaurant apologized—for now.
This is the sort of shit that I find horrifying: government controls healthcare, then rations access to that care according to your behavior, food, social media score, etc. Cashless society helps track and control your behavior further. Face recognition can be used to trap you in your house if you need “discipline”.
To some true believers, that sounds like utopia.
NOT my idea of utopia.
In his short-lived presidential campaign Rick Santorum said something to the effect that people really don’t want the burden of freedom to make wrong choices, and that’s why we want government to prevent us from doing wrong.
He really believed that.
I was an officer in the local GOP at that time (2008). That was when a bunch of new faces showed up to join: Ron Paul supporters. Old gop guard tried to exclude them but they were there as delegates fair and square.
That year marked the beginning of the end of my involvement with the MN party. Exclusion of Paul supporters was one reason why.
Very unfortunately, I think Rick Santorum is very much correct. Not everyone, of course, there is this place. But for a whole lot of people that is one of the prime functions of government. That is the battle, to convince those that they are wrong and freedom is most important. To me, it seems logical, but then again, I enjoy here.
And Ron Paul is the man, and his son is damn good as well.
Right on, right on.
Some of my friends sit around every evening and they worry about the times ahead,
But everybody else is overwhelmed by indifference,
