My family lives in ours for months at a time during the summer. We’re planning on getting out of VA as well, and intend to live in it again while we find a new property. For example – when the police station was burned down in Minneapolis over the summer, that made sense to me. The anger was with the cops and I understand why their building would be the focus of their anger.
When it turned into a bunch of stores being looted, that did not.
If a significant portion of the country thinks the election was rigged, then it is a fairly logical reaction.
I think the issue is that most of us have a normalcy bias simply because things have been a certain way for a very long time. We’ve been talking about the situation falling apart more than most, but when it actually starts we’re still surprised.
I’m only surprised it took this long, and that I’m not hearing reports of dead congresscritters.
I don’t think you can do that without talking about what’s been going on, not just this summer but for the past four years. I’m not saying it’s justifiable, either – as I said earlier, I expect what happened today to make things much worse. I’m saying it was inevitable and predictable that there would eventually be a reaction like this when leftist violence has been condoned at least and enthusiastically encouraged at most by the political and media establishment.

I believe we have truly reached the end point of our Republic. The people in that mob know it at least sub-consciously. It certainly fits the pattern of a 10-generation empire that collapses in a heap of decadence and corruption.
Most people are still in the denial and anger phases. Next will be a round of bargaining. Then depression and acceptance. At that point maybe we can move on to whatever comes next – a peaceful divorce would be my suggestion (and I’ll need to get my ass on the right side of the divide).
Its one of those things. I can justify in my own head why a community rises up if they feel their families are threatened, just as I can justify the angst of these protesters. Doesn’t make it right, doesn’t mean I think it is the way you should go about it, but many of these people are fed up. They feel lied to, cheated, denied a reach-around, have no avenue of recourse, are told they are crazy, etc.
What we expect people to do and what they do rarely line up.

The petition was made, but no where does it say the grievance has to be addressed. While I do not think entering any government building should ever be disallowed (you know the whole government by the people, for the people horseshit), they didn’t exactly remain peaceable did they?

When a group of people have had every organ of government aligned against them and a group of people that are actively looking to continue and expand the state’s power to further stamp you down are coming into power, this is what you get (not that the Neocons are any better in practice, they just have the good grace to not say the quiet part out loud). If I am to take these people at their word, they wish to, at minimum , find people who have the wrong opinions and excise them from society. I have little faith that the Courts will save us, they are so moribund with bad case law it would take them decades to get back to something that even even loosely resembles the Constitution, the Legislature has been abdicating its responsibility to the Executive since at least the 1940’s and the Executive is about to be run by an addle-brained geriatric and a failed-to-the-very-top woman that has not demonstrated any competence and oft has shown open malice for her constituents. Add in an election were the powers that were responsible for ensuring, at least, that the elections were _perceived_ as legitimate completely and utterly failed and you have a recipe for what happened at the Capitol.

I used to think “it couldn’t happen here” about a whole lot of things. I am not nearly so naive anymore. There is nothing special about this soil, nothing better about the people living on it, no finer clay from which America or Americans are drawn. We are only better if we live and act better, and lately no one with power has any interest in doing that.
No one of any level does. Here is the thing, the people largely want free shit, that was never in question. Both our leadership and the people aim to live of the country which in turn takes from the people. And the that ignores the mental effects of putting everyone on solitary for a year. If the people weren’t insane before, they are now.
I think it was you who said something similar a couple weeks ago that stuck with me. It was something along the lines of the past 40 years have swayed Americans into a fall sense of security. Just in the last century we had the Spanish Flu, 2 World Wars, the Great Depression… and that was pretty damn good compared to the misery that occurred in all of the previous centuries. I’m a market watcher, I spent as much time watching Fox Biz as Fox News today.
Market had a helluva day (for better or worse). Anyway, airlines, hospitality, hotels were all winners, starting early this morning. Tech not so good. While I don’t understand what all that means my perceptions are that the market believes travel and recreation are going to improve. Those things can only improve as restrictions are reduced.
How that matches what we may believe is in store for us with a Demo regime I don’t know. Why the restrictions would be reduced can be anyone’s guess. Politics? Conquering the virus ( made me laugh typing that) ? Or are they one and the same?
Some think there will be a lot of stimulus, some think the debt will destroy us. Some (me) believe both and are inseparable. What the Stock Market believe, I have no clue.
