Saturday Morning Training Links

Classes start next week, so this week, all faculty were locked in various rooms at different times for extensive training. And team-building exercises. And “helpful” coaching on things like Mentorship. My favorite was, of course, the training on Vocabulary, where we were taught about verbal sensitivity. We were handed a sheet with at least 35 different sets of neo-pronouns, just in case bloody abortions like “ze” and “zer” are insufficiently indicative of a craving for attention by mentally ill mediocrities. Each one was carefully explained to us by some $350,000/year DEI dean. Then we moved on to “trigger words” and one of them is, of course “trigger.” So we now can’t say “trigger words,” we have to say “content warning” or some other euphemism. I’ve already been threatened with discipline for using the term “freshman,” and that was also discussed in excruciating detail.

My absolute favorite, though, is the prohibition against using the words “killed” or “murdered.” The example given for Correct Speech was, “Lee Harvey Oswald unalived President Kennedy.”

But the opposite of unalived is “born,” and birthdays today include a guy who led an enchanted life; an exemplar of historical fiction; a guy who presaged the current Team Blue view of genetics; a comedy writer who farted out a massive hit song; the best rock guitarist you’ve never heard of; the guy who ruined wrestling; the guy who ruined science fiction; a guy who baked the Pie; a guy who was always the weakest part of his films; an iron man who was actually tougher than tungsten; a woman who constantly missed verbal cues; a guy who is alternately hilarious and what the fuck; and chick who was annoying but quite hot and aged quite horribly.

Links are, of course, ageless.

Give this guy a blue ribbon.

Biden (well, the Obama retreads) wants Hamas to have a means to rearm. Otherwise, the sweet flow of money to the defense industry might dry up.

In case you didn’t believe the Old Guy, here’s proof about the aforementioned birthday boy’s skill and talent.

One wonders how small Unis like Alfred manage to stay in business.

      • rhywun

I think they are well-known in certain fields?

Otherwise lots of small colleges are closing left and right.

      • rhywun

I’ve already been threatened with discipline for using the term “freshman,”

    Would “fresh meat” be acceptable?

    • UnCivilServant

Challenge the head to trial by combat and slay Zir to take over the university.

    • SDF-7

I’d say “Too naive to know better” was an option — but they’re already too ripe for OMWC and all.

    • The Other Kevin

In roller derby they used to call the new girls “fresh meat”. Now they are “skater tots”. So stupid.

      • UnCivilServant

“Skater Tots” sounds like something you’d order from the kitchen at the venue.

    • creech

      “empty vessels”

    • doktor of BRAIN SCIENCE!

The proper term, in lieu of Freshmen, is children. Or, as needs dictate, fucking children.

      • Name's BEAM. *James* BEAM.

I’ve always preferred “callow youth,” not the least because whenever the term’s used around callow youth, they cock their heads at me like a dog trying to understand an unknown command. Very entertaining. Then I tell them to use the AwEsoMe PoWEr OF tE IntERWebs to look it up, and then they get all sulky.

        Extremely entertaining.

    • Pope Jimbo

I remember the freshmen girls trying to swim upstream every fall. They were sure they wanted to be an engineer.

From the start of the semester to the drop date, they’d be preyed on by every upper class engineering dweeb. By drop date, 90% of them had disappeared. Not just to the creepy upperclassman, but also to the reality that the engineering profs were pretty snotty about getting the exact right answer.

The gals were also swayed by the fact that their roommates who were liberal arts majors never had to study. Or turn in homework.

  3. SDF-7

The example given for Correct Speech was, “Lee Harvey Oswald unalived President Kennedy.”

Interesting — I’d seen crap like that online, but thought it was only to dodge demonetization filters on the various social media platforms. No idea it was trying to creep into (relatively) mainstream usage.

Or is the college worried about the first-year-people (not freshmen!) surreptitiously recording faculty and causing on-line controversy by not using their lingo perhaps?

    • Brawndo

Yeah, I’ve seen people saying “unalived” as a joke for a couple years now, I don’t actually believe OMWC is telling the truth that this is real without proof.

      • rhywun

I don’t actually believe OMWC is telling the truth that this is real without proof

        I can’t even guess anymore.

        Batshit insane if true.

    • Mojeaux

“Unalived” and “self-delete” and suchlike is TikTok speak because they take down vids with “dead,” “killed,” “suicide,” and other “problematic” words like “crap.”

      • Gender Traitor

So the CCP is behind this! Shoulda guessed!

      • Mojeaux

Yes, but YouTube’s taking it on too.

      • Name's BEAM. *James* BEAM.

Yeah, I’ve also seen the word “grape” used for penetrative sexual assault (and of course, the acronym SA), just to get around the filters.

Didn’t Attack of the Show (or some other comedy show from back in the day) use the term “grapist” in one of its skits?

      • SDF-7

It occurs to me that the arts half of arts and sciences is in the final stages of making itself completely irrelevant. It used to be you could get an English or history degree and still be fit for working in the real world. The last 20 years has seen a shift from a classical education to one based in postmodern critical theory, making its graduates qualified for nothing other than more than future baristas.

    A Glibertarian in the making.

Unhappy, but seemingly rational parents. I’d be pissed if that was my kid. Not sure I’d go ER depends on how looped the kid was.

If the restaurant is smart they’d get on the phone quick and pay for the ER visit. But they won’t because that’s not how we do business anymore. It will be suck it insurance company. The insurance company will proceed to dick around for at least a year, piss everybody off and pay out well into 5 figures. And the insurance company will claim victim status and the rest of us will wonder why insurance is so expensive.

All of which could be avoided with an apology, actual costs incurred and possibly a few free meals.

    • Fourscore

Who amongst us didn’t want a taste of the adult beverages when we were little kids (7-8 years old and maybe even younger), out of curiosity ?

      • Sensei

For sure. However 2 years old might be pushing it…

I remember my dad letting me sip his drinks.

      • rhywun

I got tipsy at a wedding once around that age.

    • Tonio

But if they’d slipped the kid some gender-affirming hormones without parental permission, that would have been totally fine. Kidding, of course.

The parents did their due diligence, out of some combination of concern for their young child, to establish a paper trail as CYA insurance against charges of parental neglect, or as the basis for future legal claims against the restaurant.

In the old days this would have been handled quietly, as Sensei described, or been a funny human interest story in the media.

2 former Boilermakers Union presidents among 7 indicted in $20 million theft

Aug. 23 (UPI) — Two former Boilermakers Union presidents are among seven former and current union officials indicted Thursday for an alleged 15 year scheme to embezzle $20 million from the union.

The Justice Department said a federal grand jury in Kansas indicted former union presidents Newton Jones, 71, of Chapel Hill, N.C., and Truman “Warren” Fairley, 59, of Chapel Hill along with five others.

“As alleged in the indictment, these defendants, including two former presidents of the Boilermakers Union, enriched themselves by spending millions of dollars in union funds for their own benefit, including for salary and benefits for no-show jobs, tuition, rent, luxury international travel, meals, vacation payouts, and unauthorized loans,” DOJ Criminal Division head Nicole M. Argentieri said in a statement.

In other words, they did what every other union boss in the country has been doing for a about a century and a quarter. I wonder who they pissed off.

Judge rules in favor of transgender woman in landmark discrimination suit

Aug. 23 (UPI) — A transgender woman in Australia has won a legal battle in a discrimination case against a social media company, after a judge ruled Friday the app’s administrators wrongly banned her from the platform.

Roxanne Tickle filed the lawsuit, alleging she was banned in 2021 from the social media platform Giggle for Girls, a networking platform for women, court documents show.

Tickle, who is from the Australian province of New South Wales, is transgender and had gender reaffirming surgery in 2019.

Tickle named the app along with founder and CEO Sall Grover in the suit, claiming she was blocked from using the social media platform because the company said she was a man.

“…a craving for attention by mentally ill mediocrities.” <— It appears your grasp and use of the language is already sufficient.

"Then we moved on to “trigger words” and one of them is, of course “trigger.” So we now can’t say “trigger words,” we have to say “content warning” <— one thinks using the structure and logic of their first language. If the language is ever changing then rational thinking becomes increasingly unlikely.

Is it too much to ask that if I have to go back to my 18-24 year-old insurance rate that I get to boink 18-24 year-old girls again?

The report released by Insurify suggests car insurance rates in Minnesota have gone up by 55% this year, the highest increase in the nation.

Their data suggests the average comprehensive insurance plan in Minnesota costs around $2,315, up from $1,492 last June. Insurify believes the price will increase even further to an average of $2,597 by the end of the year.

I can’t believe King Walz didn’t tout that – under his leadership – insurance rated doubled.

I’m sure there were all sorts of factors that went into this increase. I’m pretty sure that 100% of the increase can NOT be laid directly at the feed of King Walz.

Too bad that we don’t have some independent people that do nothing except look into stuff like this. Wouldn’t it be great if I could read stories in the Strib, the PioPress and other local media where they went out and documented why our rates were skyrocketing?

    Savior of our nation

Kamala Harris just showed us the promise of a post-MAGA future. Now it’s up to the voters to decide to take us there.

In her rousing convention speech on Thursday, Harris offered many olive branches to right-leaning independents and Republican voters. She vowed toughness on immigration and crime. She promised to transcend the nation’s divisions. She vowed to govern for all Americans and transcend faction or party. She made numerous appeals to voters with decidedly right-leaning values.

But, in mulling what Harris means by all this, it’s crucial to appreciate what she did not do. Harris offered all this outreach to voters outside the core Democratic coalition without making serious concessions to the ideological preoccupations we associate with MAGA-style right-wing populism. There was no real accommodation with what might be called The World According to MAGA.

Instead, Harris treated Trumpism and the MAGA movement as forces that must be decisively repudiated—and unequivocally left behind.

We will all join together in joyous celebration of our new glorious reimagined future of love and peaceful coexistence. But first we must subjugate the heretics and crush their will.

    • rhywun

  33. The Late P Brooks

In a remarkable turn, Harris appears prepared to run precisely the aggressive, inspired campaign that combatting the rising forces of domestic authoritarianism requires. Her vision hints at a post-MAGA future that is fully faithful to liberal ideals—freedom, autonomy, open societies, free and fair elections—while also addressing dissatisfactions with American life, from economic precarity to feelings of physical insecurity, that are leading many into the temptations of illiberalism. Getting to that future, Harris and Walz appear to be saying, will require fully consigning MAGA to the dustheap of history where it belongs.

She’s a dadgum genius; the greatest political philosopher of our time. Her moral leadership will bring us to Paradise on Earth, founded on love and respect for those deserving of it. As for the others? Well, we can always dig more ditches.

I play with a former MLB pitcher in the local men’s baseball league. Devout Christian.

He uses dadgum all the time. It’s fucking hilarious.

“fully faithful to liberal ideals—freedom, autonomy, open societies, free and fair elections”

Those must be some good drugs.

“…fully consigning MAGA to the dustheap of history where it belongs.”

I dont know why they dont just come right out and say it. Oh wait, I think they just did.

One of the local winemakers i like made a viognier and it is good so in your face OMWC ( unless i misremeber you saying viognier should only be made in a specific place)

    • Old Man With Candy

I’m always hoping, but so far, the only great viogniers I’ve had came from Condrieu. Does he export?

      • PieInTheSky

No. Not really. Also one of his most interesting white wines will be sadly discontinued as it it not worth the trouble.

This viognier is kind of high on the sugar for me at 3
8 g.per liter but has quite good acidity to compensate.

      • PieInTheSky

Though i am not sure i would call it quite great… But it is good.

A shockingly large number of academics don’t know the difference between mediators and confounders.

Consider: With confounders, controlling for them is good. With mediators or colliders, controlling for them is bad!

It is difficult to get a man to understand something, when his salary depends upon his not understanding it.

It’s comprehensive so blame inflation and FedGov mandated safety and electronics.

What? You mean when somebody rams a shopping cart into the back of your car and disables the computer controlled led taillight assembly it’s not a $259 repair?

“Kamala’s brother-in-law fleeced taxpayers for billions to give to left-wing groups and lawyers

At the start of his administration, President Trump’s Attorney General banned settlement slush funds, while one of the early acts of the Biden-Harris DOJ was to rescind that ban….

Meanwhile, the Tony West-invented, Biden-Harris operated “Honest Graft” machine pours taxpayer billions into left-wing activist groups, and West is said to be Harris’s White House counsel-in-waiting.”
