A friend and treasured professional colleague suddenly took sick last week and died last night. We’d had hope, but it was not to be. Completely unrelated to the corona panic other than us not being able to visit him during his last week. So I’ll be a bit more terse than usual since my jocularity today is limited. But the world goes on, and we want you guys to be entertained, because Yahweh knows, we could all sure use that.
With death comes life, and birthdays today abound, including half of the best comics duo ever; a notorious supporter of the mass murdering LBJ (and was nonetheless a great performer); the guy who dreamed up and wrote Psycho; the guy who got James Bond going as a franchise; the ultimate in black hats and beards; one of my absolute favorite actors; a visitor from the planet Cheron; the creator of the Pottery Barn analogy; and the greatest hype artist until Elon Musk.
Some news. Some.
Let no opportunity for politicization pass. Lori really does sound like Orwell’s Napoleon.
As the weather turned sunny, and uncommonly warm, in late March, Chicagoans flocked to the eighteen-mile-long public path along Lake Michigan, cycling, running, walking, rollerblading, chatting, laughing—and ignoring the stay-at-home order that Illinois Governor J. B. Pritzker had been issued a few days earlier. Lori Lightfoot, Chicago’s mayor, was not amused. On March 26th, she tweeted, “This is not a vacation. While most of our residents understand this, some have refused to listen. So for the good of the city, we are immediately closing high-traffic areas of the city until further notice.”
I’m no fan of Trump, but when I agree with him, I agree with him.
“I want fans back in the arenas,” Trump said later in a briefing at the White House. “I think it’s … whenever we’re ready. As soon as we can, obviously. And the fans want to be back, too. They want to see basketball and baseball and football and hockey. They want to see their sports. They want to go out onto the golf courses and breathe nice, clean, beautiful fresh air.”
“Because you haven’t bribed us yet.”
Under new guidance issued by the Small Business Administration it seems non-profits and faith-based groups can apply for the Paycheck Protection Program loans designed to keep small business afloat during the COVID-19 epidemic, but most venture-backed companies are still not covered. Late Friday night, the Treasury Department updated its rules regarding the “affiliation” of private entities to include religious organizations but keep in place the same rules that would deny most startups from receiving loans.
…For startups with investors on the board of directors, the decision-making powers that those investors hold means the startup is affiliated with other companies that the partner’s venture firm has invested in — which could mean that they’re considered an entity with more than 500 employees.
“It’s not like you need to eat.”
“This is the moment to not be going to the grocery store, not going to the pharmacy, but doing everything you can to keep your family and your friends safe and that means everybody doing the six-feet distancing, washing their hands.”
Why I always try to fly Southwest.
Despite there only being 11 people on a Tuesday, March 24 flight, the company [American Airlines] allegedly refused to allow them to adhere to the social-distancing measure of sitting 6 feet apart, instead forcing them all into the last three rows, Mother Jones reports. “The reasoning behind it is, well, they bought basic economy fares, so we can’t put them further up in the cabin, because that would be an upgrade,” said one of the flight attendants, who requested anonymity for fear of retribution from her employer.
Some Old Guy Music to fit my current devastated mood. Excuse me, someone is cutting up onions in here again.
Condolences, OMWC.
Seconded
Please add my condolences too.
And mine.
My condolences as well.
I’m sorry. There’s never a good time to lose a friend, but right now is especially bad when you can’t even say goodbye.
I am sorry for your loss, and that you did not get to spend some time with him his last few days
I’m sorry for your loss.
my condolences as well
Sincere condolences to you and SP.
My sympathy. So much harder, I’m sure, when you could neither say goodbye before his passing nor gather with everyone else who loved him to share your grief and comfort one another.
Sorry for your loss.
I am sorry for your loss.
Man, that sucks. I am so sorry. Maybe a wake when this all blows over, but nothing can replace being able to visit before your friend passed.
Sorry to hear.
So sorry to hear that, condolences.
My condolences, OMWC. Hang in there
Condolences to you OMWC. Our neighbors have a preemie grandchild that they can’t visit and are torn up about for the same reasons.
Sorry OMWC.
Letters to the Local Rag: COVID Hasn’t Killed All the Old People Yet
“This is concerning the so-called noise that’s on 107.1 on the radio station. I have been around for a while — I’m not real old, I’m not real young, but I refrain from calling it music because it is not even close to music. It is the worst head-banging sound I’ve heard, and it’s ridiculous to have something like this on a local radio station. On the 26th, I was listening to the radio and I kept thinking, “Well, I’ll go back to that and it will change.” It did not change. Again, it was the most horrible sounds I have ever heard on the radio station, and I like all kinds of music. This is not music.”
Stupid college kids running the station.
It’s not as if there are other stations. Poor guy, forced, forced to listen to that
And radios without an “off” switch, hardwired to the house electrical. Don’t forget the DJ with his encouragement to “don’t change that dial”.
“Rip the knob off!!”
Turns out that the station went off air a month ago
“Is that you, Senator Biden?”
Letters To The Local Rag: High Noon
“Only in a world where law and order has declined to the point where civil order has been replaced with 24/7 gun fights in the streets should gun stores be declared as “essential services.” It is insane to think that encouraging the purchase of weapons and ammo will lead to a more stable society. Panic sales of weapons is right up with the stupid idea of allowing carrying guns into bars, guns on school grounds and on college campuses, and into hospitals and churches. It’s coming to the point where the sane among us are going to have to begin to wear combat grade ballistic armor when we make a run to the post office.”
All I hear is bleating.
That is some industrial grade stupid there.

My favorite part is using new York state for a template.
Or the “cartoon”
Jesus, the comments.
Painful.
allowing carrying guns
Uh huh…
into bars, guns on school grounds and on college campuses, and into hospitals and churches
Because history does not show that people with ill-intent are going to ignore a sign/rule and carry on into these places where everyone who follows rules is left to be sitting ducks…The thing about “gun free” zones is that they are not and never will be.
You know who sponsored the legislation for gun free schools? Joe Biden
” is right up with the stupid idea of allowing carrying guns into bars, guns on school grounds and on college campuses, and into hospitals and churches. It’s coming to the point where the sane among us are going to have to begin to wear combat grade ballistic armor when we make a run to the post office”
It’s funny that the author picked the one place it is absolutely illegal to carry a gun. All those other places it is legal in Utah, and you should see the absolute Carnage on the streets were have here.
Isn’t combat ballistic grade armor (whatever the hell that means, but I imagine in the author’s head they mean something like a soldier kicking down doors in Iraq or a SWAT team guy would wear) illegal?
Sorry to hear about your buddy, Old Man.
Goddamn, will one of win the lottery or something so we have a good story among us to rally around?!
Always sad to lose a friend.
We realize that and we don’t want our own friends to feel bad when we go, only be happy that they (we) had a chance to know them. Hold the memories, OMWC and SP, and remember the good times.
I did laundry the other day and didn’t lose a sock.
That’s what sock bags are for.
Sock bag is roshambo with fists.
That is one of the best album covers I’ve ever seen. Good song, too. Sorry about the friend, Old Man.
You should see that one from Spinal Tap.
“Shit Sandwich.”
Unconditional, that’s what you are,
Unconditional, though near or far….
I’m sorry for your loss, Mr. With Candy.
I didn’t realise Cōlin Powell was a shabbos goy.
Sorry to hear, OMWC.
Sorry about your friend, OMWC.
“The reasoning behind it is, well, they bought basic economy fares, so we can’t put them further up in the cabin, because that would be an upgrade,”
Just because it happens in your head doesn’t make it reasoning.
“Just because it happens in your head doesn’t make it reasoning.”
I am *so* stealing that!
Dang, that’s a pithy riposte. I might have to borrow it someday.
At least contrive some BS excuse like it saves on fuel consumption by parking everyone behind the engines, because climate change.
That would be technically true… Loading a plane with the center of gravity aft means less downward lift has to be generated by the horizontal stabilizer and therefore less induced drag. Don’t let Greta find out.
I rarely fly, is there a reason people would pay more to be further up on the cabin? more leg room or something? Also the very next sentence after the one OMWC posted claims that the stewardesses spread people around anyway, so seems a bit of a nothing burger, company has policy, employees can use common sense and override it.
The exit is at the front so when you arrive at the destination everybody is pushing to get off – people at the rear have to wait unit everybody forward from them get off.
Now, if there’s only 11 people on the plane I don’t think it really matters where they are.
Of course, if there are only 11 people and the are in 3 rows there should be enough room that each of them has a few empty seats around them. Probably not the recommended 6 feet interval though, which is BS.
Depending on the plane, the last rows can be mighty loud if that’s where the engines are.
American has already changed their policy, but drugs keep falling out people’s asses.
I’m stealing it, too. Nice insight
You would think American politicians would know better than to think they can order the American people around. What do they think they are – cops?
“and the greatest hype artist ”
That’s not Keef Cowboy.
Here’s Vermont’s 1984?

Worst hippies ever.
we are immediately closing high-traffic areas of the city until further notice.
I wonder how you intend on enforcing “closure” of open air spaces such as parks.
Sending the pigs in to truncheon people in the parks?
Nah, you can just throw violators in jail where they’ll get coronavirus. It’s for their own good you know.
Shoot on sight.
“we are immediately closing high-traffic areas of the city until further notice”
Which of course will make the low traffic areas into high traffic areas, rinse and repeat
At which point all will be required to stay home since there will be no areas left, high or low
Those roads… not only did you not build them but soon you’ll be prohibited from using them.
So, no longer having roads, I somehow am not sure if this will be the libertopia we all anticipated.
Won’t need roads – we’ll all have flying cars, right?
Well the gun stores and liquor stores are open.
But mass transit is still totally ok?
Gotta maintain control of the proles.
City people online are actually asking if there’s some alternative to transit.
I hoped they were joking.
American Airlines is asshole.
“Too big to fail.”
Short-bus special in the air.
the six-feet distancing
Where did this come from? Why not 8 feet? Why not 3 feet? Seems about as arbitrary (and constitutionally impermissible) as a magazine round limit.
My guess would be it’s a worst case interpretation of a study finding from god knows where…or it’s completely random. Who the hell knows these days?

I’ll have to share this story with the proprietors of our favorite local winery. They have a “mascot” who already has training as a therapy dog, so he can add this to his resume.
Shut up, Chuck.
Schumer said, “There’s all too familiar a pattern in this administration, when you tell the president the truth, you get fired. This guy was a patriot. This guy stood for — our intelligence agencies have done such a wonderful job. … And by politicizing it, dismantling it, not wanting to hear the truth, that’s — since World War II, we have built up this fine, fine agency. And the president is undermining it. When you speak truth to power in this country, Fredricka, when you speak truth to power, you should be a hero. But in this administration, when you speak truth to power, all too often, you get fired. Ask the captain of the aircraft carrier Theodore Roosevelt, ask Col. Vindman, ask other people.”
Vindman is a pretentious hack that can take a long walk of a short pier for all I care.
“ since World War II, we have built up this fine, fine agency. ”
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHA *inhales* HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA
You should always refer to Schumer by his complete title: “Chuck Schumer, D-NY, Sanctimonious Prick.”
Six ways to Sunday of getting back at you
*sigh* Mr Mojeaux (whom I suspect has already had the Moo Goo Gai Pandemic, as well as XX) is marginally askeert of this bug and gravely delivering news to me like I want to know the latest. I just asked him what the global death toll is. I looked it up. Still hasn’t surpass the U.S. 2017-2018 flu season.
Then I got mad and said, “There is no life worth government telling you you can’t go outside your house or you’ll be arrested.”
I don’t think he knew quite what to do with that.
^^^This was insensitive of me to post. I apologize, OMWC, and condolences on your friend.
I see zero problem.
Do not apologize for that. You are 100% correct.
We are all very sad for SP’s and OMWC’s loss and we would fix it if we could. If the friend they lost is worth his/her salt they would agree with you, as do I. One day I will end up sitting on a cloud picking my nose, playing a harp and trying to amuse myself. That is the way of the world but I would not change that if it cost anyone their freedom.
Thanks Suthen. I dare not say that anywhere but here.
Ladydoom is rather worried.
I go back to work tomorrow.
My mom’s like, “Meh, whatever. Don’t want to live through that sickness, but dying, so what.”
My mom’s side of the family is rather fatalistic, come to think of it. ? So that’s where I get it.
But does fatalistic help with the writing?
Fatalism is about the only philosophy that makes any sense. It also preserves people’s sanity.
Fatalists dude, fuck me. I mean, say what you like about the tenets of National Socialism, Dude, at least it’s an ethos.
I thought that was what you say about nihilists.
potato tomato
It does. But I don’t like being this way.
“(whom I suspect has already had the Moo Goo Gai Pandemic, as well as XX)”
Get them tested?
Can’t get a test they’re not offering.
OK
Not easy. My kid had (has?) A cough and had a fever. Ladydoom did too. The hospital told us to stay home until we need an ambulance. We called different places every day last week.
He’s talking about the post infection test for antibodies for plasmapheresis (for other people) purposes.
Oh right. My mistake
If they have a cough and fever they should be able to get a test. Those two symptoms are on every list I’ve seen. Try calling their primary care doc for a referral.
“The hospital told us to stay home until we need an ambulance.”
That sounds like terrible advice.
It is terrible advice. I was a little pissed to hear it.
“The hospital told us to stay home until we need an ambulance.”
And now you know why deaths are exploding!!111!!!!!!!11i11!1i3u21!!!!

I bought some stuff for my mom, and I managed to find yeast which is one of the few things here still very hard to find. My mom seemed very happy to get mold. I now realised I should have bought a pack for myself. I have never baked anything, but who know how things will go.
Anyhoo came home took a shower to disinfect and now I poured a glass of a decent Merlot/Feteasca Neagra blend …
From what I’ve heard showers are great for getting dirt and mud off but just smear germs around.
well if washing your hands help so should washing your body
More fun with models. (and would the chick in the pic)
NPR reported that IHME “produced projections very similar” to the model that White House officials were using for their projections.
IHME’s modelers said that they did not take into account President Donald Trump’s social distancing guidelines when they built their model, but they did take into account which each individual state did.
“Ultimately, these forecasts were developed to provide hospitals, health care workers, policymakers, and the public with crucial information about what demands COVID-19 may place on hospital capacity and resources, so that they could begin to plan,” IHME wrote.
The model predicts the times of peak hospital resource usage, peak number of deaths per day, and total estimated deaths by August 4, 2020 for the U.S. and for each state.
Do you think it is a stock picture?
Looks like.
And yes… .shockingly the person who is paid to be attractive in photographs is attractive in a photograph.
I think that’s actually a humiliation fetish girl checking out dick pics
I have been following this model for several weeks – much of the data that takes “into account what each individual state did” is erroneous, and based-on data outcomes seems heavily weighted toward specific policies. Also, data is not updated based-on actual for many states.
Modeling is challenging under any circumstance, but real-time models requires teams that actively update, review, adjust assumptions, etc. IHME has historically developed longer-term models and impact reviews – this situation is a horse of a different color.
Adjusting assumptions is extremely difficult – if they were your assumptions in the first place.
I think that is a model. That doesn’t look like a watch a doctor/scientist/tech would wear.

Sorry for your loss.
I don’t feel that old, but it feels like I have more freinds and family on the other side.
Sorry to hear about your friend, OMWC. It’s a hard time to begin with; hard enough without that. Condolences.
While I’m skeptical of anything Mother Jones reports (I actually read them once in a while, in an act of self-flagellation) this doesn’t surprise me. I haven’t flown American in some years, but the times I did it seemed like their customer service was pretty bad.
On our United flight back to NJ a week ago today, there were 34 people on a 300+ passenger airplane, half of which were United employees deadheading home. Once the flight was boarded and doors closed, the flight attendants went through and told people to spread out all they wanted, as long as they stayed in their ticketed class. People did. Everyone was happy.
I really like Mother Jones, despite not sharing most any of their ideological convictions. They usually have interesting writers, and they take on subjects that other people shy away from.
And like Spike Lee movies, I usually like the setup, and then find myself baffled by the ideologically driven conclusions.
But admittedly, I’m not an aficionado. My “small doses” approach may mean I’m seriously cherry-picking only the best of their efforts.
I have flown exclusively American for my past 8-10 flights (simply because it was the only direct to where I was commuting to often) and it’s been pretty solid. Only 2 delays (one minor 15 minutes, the other a bit longer (1.5 hours). Customer service has been fine. Delta and Southwest are usually my favorites.
Sometimes on the internet I run int pictures of various women I find unusually hot – which sort of induces sadness really, although they are not necessarily my type.

Some of the talk above about distancing etc. touches on something that has been bugging me. The media in general has been the target of my ire for the last several years, but this time it is the “medical and scientific establishment” that the media is turning to for their expertise.
Medicine is supposed to be a “scientific, evidence-based profession”. Yet much of what they do is just wild guesses. This is the reason we need the folks over at “Science Based Medicine”, not just for the scams being peddled at GNC, but to keep the medical profession headed in the direction of being more science-based.
The current epidemic has seen many very high-ranking medical officials spouting their personal opinion as if it were evidence-based scientific fact. We discus the 6 foot distance requirement above – which may have some basis in cough radius reality, but probably has no real data to back it up as relates to upper respiratory infection transmission in the real world. But that isn’t really all that bad, compared with the other rampant rationalizations running around.
The mask business is certainly right near the top. They were clearly just making stuff up. They didn’t want non-medical people hoarding all the high-end masks, so they told everyone that masks wouldn’t help.
Now, there actually is some controversy on the topic. It is very common for people to wear masks in the far east where cities are huge and dense. So there has been some work on the topic. And the evidence is mixed, probably due entirely to experimental design and underlying assumptions.
But if you are infected with an upper respiratory virus, wearing even a cloth bandana has to help slow the transmission of the virus in public. There’s just no way around it. Even if it doesn’t 100% prevent it, there’s no way it doesn’t attenuate the spread, probably by a lot… but even 10% would be something.
So they’ve gone back and forth on this one. But none of it was based in evidence. They backed in to the conclusion they wanted based on personal opinion. Maybe an informed personal opinion, but still one based on the biases of their underlying assumptions and personal weighing of priorities. Originally it was the provision of masks to hospitals that was the top priority. So everything else became secondary and we got the “don’t wear a mask” directives. (but note, they made sure to include agents of the state in their “do wear masks” directives)
I get it… this is how our brains normally work as human beings. We intuit our way to an opinion, then we cherry pick evidence to back up our initial hunch. The legal profession is rife with this. Heck, it is pretty much founded on this principle. But in medicine, we should be basing our policies and treatments on rigorous evidence. Unfortunately, it seems that for the most part, people with an MD are no more science-based than the average human. And I’m finding it frustrating.
Then I have to listen to all of these “medical experts” on the news, most of whom don’t have my level of expertise in virology – which is limited to my graduate level courses from nearly 30 years ago and a few podcasts from “This Week In Virology”.
In addition to the Hippocratic Oath, the medical profession should also take an oath not to hold themselves out as experts in a field that they do not have expertise in. Sanjay Gupta, Dr. Oz, et. al. need to STFU and let real experts talk. But I suppose that isn’t happening, because they need them to bend their opinion to the Orange Man Bad agenda, as well as fitting the rest of the daily narrative.
The Today Show had some expert on the other day explaining some basics… one of their regular MDs. And after a 5th grade level explanation, they launched in to a prepared 2 minute segment on “alternative” treatments that work for coronavirus – things like vitamin C, etc. Every syllable was made-up nonsense.
The medical profession really should be taking action to stop this kind of nonsense. Because it gets people killed. Not necessarily directly, but this MSU environment allows room for quacks and snake-oil salesmen that actually do get people killed.
Ok, rant off.
I see the mask thing as a way to get people back to work faster, which is why I’m ok with it. It’s probably the best “idea” the government has had in this whole thing.
I think the biggest issue with the masks is that the Chinese Daigou parallel traders literally cleaned out every single shelf worldwide back in January and nobody has gotten any kind of reasonable stocks back since then. ADVChina has done a ton of coverage on this from the beginning through their podcasts this week on it.
I’ve got to agree with Winston there that as a Libertarian, free trade should be free, but under the circumstances, it’s pretty much a dick move to drive around to every single hardware and drug store in nationwide and clean off the shelves just to resell them back in China – especially bypassing customs, import duties and doing it [most likely] in contravention of visa status, etc – right when everyone else in the respective countries is going to need something similar for health PPE (particularly health professionals, etc).
After this, I will be picking up a couple boxes for myself just for long term storage/preparation.
Me too. Case of N95 and a couple cases of procedure masks.
My wife made a bunch of cloth masks from a pattern she found on the internet. Uses a pipe cleaner for the forming piece around the nose, and has a pocket to insert a cutout of MERV 18 filter paper. Instant N95 masks.
Side note… MERV 18 filters are not cheap. But it is a good order of magnitude cheaper than the manufactured masks.
SHE DIDN’T SHOP FOR NON-ESSENTIAL CRAFT SUPPLIES DURING THIS CRISIS, DID SHE???
Nope…. but I am getting to clear out a bunch of old cloth she’s been storing for “just in case”.
So a bunch of people are getting masks with flamingos on them. And there’s a bunch of University of Miami ones. And some generic blue and red.
Because that’s what was in the “It was on sale for really cheap, so I had to buy some” pile.
But she is periodically venting about people posting on facebook about the fun things they are doing in their expensive houses or with their expensive toys. So I got that going for me.
The masks thing has really pissed me off. It was too obvious an attempt to limit market so the right people could get them. But to lie about it? Dick move.
Now here’s a thought that I know isn’t great, but isn’t it the employers responsibility to provide PPE? I can see not having enough for something like this, but the way the media and certain politicians have been talking, it’s like the shit didn’t exist in a hospital except for one guy.
Isn’t this at least a little bit on the hospitals?
No, it is clearly Donald Trump’s fault.
Didn’t you even read the article about Illinois? For crying out loud – they got ventilators, but didn’t get N-95 masks… they got regular surgical masks!! Clearly, Trump made all of the federal stockpile broken and obsolete and inadequate when Obama used it and didn’t replenish it… Stupid Nazi Fascist Trump.
“isn’t it the employers responsibility to provide PPE”
If your job creates the risk, sure. Otherwise, no. It’s not their responsibility to provide clothes, after all.
Sure, if your workplace is “clothing optional”.
Does work at a hospital create risk?
Yep. And we provide PPE. For staff to wear in risk environments in the hospital. Not to wear in offsite offices, running errands or whatever.
I don’t know, my job gives me some clothes.
And they give me money that I use for clothes and nice stuff to protect me at work and home.
So would it be doctors and nurses job to provide those ppe? Not counting this spike in immediate need, should nurses have been using their salary for ppe?
A lot of places did not have adequate stocks on hand because they assumed they could just order it as needed. Always in stock. Until it isn’t.
I say it about once a week here, and almost daily in real life, we are not reasoning beings, we are rationalizing beings.
The shocking part of that statement is that most people don’t understand it. I mean, if you are 20 years old I get it. But if you have ever been married, you have no excuse…..
This is why people think that worshiping Scientists is the same thing as loving science. Science is a rigorous method designed specifically to overcome the fact that scientists are NOT any different from the rest of us when it comes to confirmation bias and rationalization. Anyone can come up with a theory, science is about killing the 99.99999999% that are wrong as efficiently as possible,
Isn’t it interesting that every system that works largely works by negative feedback? Evolution is everything. The market works by killing off businesses that either start out, or become inefficient. Science works by falsification. It is all survival of the fittest everywhere.
Nice take.
And the “science works by falsification” bit is something that is almost impossible for people to understand. Even among scientists, devising the correct experiment is extremely difficult. It took a magician to come in and explain proper experimental design to the psychologists researching psychic abilities.
I can’t tell you how many published papers we covered in journal club that were absolute crap. “They had a p-value of .03!! That means it was significant!!” …. yeah… not so much.
One paper in particular that I remember had very significant results in T-cell biology. It was an important result. So I’m sitting in a room that included some very big names… And they are raving about this paper. But it was off to me. So I said so… as a lowly grad student.
A couple of big-shot MD’s in the field basically told me I was a nobody and this was a big paper in a big journal by big scientists. But I pressed on… you see, they were comparing results from multiple runs of their assay. But the negative control in one of their assays was higher than the positive control in the other assay.
Now, I don’t know about your experience, but in my experience, when your negative control can come out hotter than the positive control from another run, that means you have a shit assay. I don’t need to know about how you ran a student T-test on your results and found them to be internally consistent.
And you know what happened? The big-name PhD in the room listened, and began arguing my side. Instantly, all of the MD’s switched sides. Which helps explain my “MD’s don’t know much” bias.
I had that happen twice – the second time was over beers at a local bar and Linus Pauling was the big name who took my side against everyone else. Real scientists know that it isn’t the person presenting something that matters, it is the idea that matters.
Many years ago, I was dating a physician. When we’d go to parties with her colleagues, she’d introduce me as “Dr. Candy.” When asked what my specialty was, I’d answer, “Physical chemistry.” That would usually get a response of something like, “Oh, I thought you were an actual doctor.”
“You have a point. Unlike you, for my doctorate, I had to do something original.”
Unsurprisingly, this answer tended to annoy her colleagues.
Have I told you lately that I love you?
Don’t let SP know. Rusty tin can lids.
My graduate program had a mix of MD’s, MD/PhD’s, PhD’s, Nutritionists and Pharmacists in the classes.
The MD’s were extremely good at memorizing lists and doing multiple choice. They always finished at the bottom of the class.
Surprisingly, the Nutritionists were always at the top. There were 7 of them, 5 from India who had to use a dictionary to write their essays. They always slotted out 1-7 on the exams. Next were the PhD’s, then Pharm, Then MD/PhD… then a big gap… then the MD’s.
They would complain that the exams were not fair.
Exam questions would be like “You have a protein designated by this RNA sequence. Describe an experiment to demonstrate the order of glycocylation in the organelles.”
You’d have 5 bluebooks and the better part of a day on that one. You’d have to fully understand RNA transcription, transport through the cell, the role of the golgi bodies and endoplasmic reticulum, how glycocylation works, the biochemistry of each step – i.e. where does that particular phosphate come from?, etc…. plus a history of various experimental techniques designed to isolate and understand each part of the cell and its biological processes.
Matching a list was really of almost no value on those exams.
But when you are presented with a patient in the ER, quickly matching a list is one of the primary skills. So round peg, round hole.
*pops megadose of Vitamin C*
I laughed.
To me, that was one of the main points of Jonathan Haidt’s The Righteous Mind, which I found fascinating and recommended to many people after I read it several years ago.
That goes back to mexican sharpshooter’s post yesterday about the nature of reality and fitness to exist.
Fitness is a very strict master. So making a fast decision that errs on the side of caution is probably much preferable to being right and slow in survival scenarios.
From that, we get Homo Sapiens Sapiens. A very smart animal that can be dangerously stupid in large groups.
Obligatory
Truer memes were never committed to image.
I’ll pile on here. I’ve been checking Reuters to see if there’s any big news I should know about. Big mistake. The other day, front and center, was an “expose” with experts talking about how Trump strong armed the FDA to approve the malaria drug for use against Corona. His decision was apparently made using only anecdotal evidence and the drugs are dangerous and cause heart problems. No mention of trials in the US and other countries, nor of how effective it’s been. Assholes the lot of them.
Also no mention that docs could write it without FDA approval.
the drugs are dangerous and cause heart problems.
Which any general practice physician would be keenly aware of, given that they probably prescribe z-pacs 5x per day.
No need to take a shot at Sparty, pal.
“Unfortunately, it seems that for the most part, people with an MD are no more science-based than the average human. And I’m finding it frustrating. ”
Their response to the “opioid crisis” is proof of that.
Most medical doctors are not professional scientists. They are technicians, albeit very highly-trained ones.
Their overall knowledge of research methods and statistics is fairly minimal, and most of them don’t read the primary literature.
They do frequently attend continuing education seminars, where someone gives them a highly-digested summary of certain research findings, but that’s not the same thing.

What is the policy regarding submitting articles here and simultaneously posting/submitting them elsewhere? I know some people have posted things here that they intend for sale elsewhere, but is that by dispensation? Or is that the default?
I have been up since 4 am writing 2000 words and want to submit it, but also want normies to read it.
no double dipping!
Some of my early articles here were inspired by articles written elsewhere where not a soul read them, but I changed things.
Yes, I realize I am not supposed to answer this query.
Your input is always welcome. I have no idea where else I’d submit it, but it is preachingto the choir here and (at least at the moment having spent 4 sleepless hours writing) I think it came out ok.
You could post here, then post a link elsewhere. Which has the bonus effect of maybe getting us some interesting Tulpae.
Or would it be better for us to stay under the radar for the time being?
We have been around long enough.
I linked to the Ozy anthrax archive on another site. No idea if anyone followed it, but I put the info out there.
Not to worry about me, I’m too cheap to buy it but I’d read it for free.
Not sure, if there is a copy write involved?
Oh, no one is going to pay me for it. I am just thinking about submitting it to a friend with a large following and a newsletter. I just didn’t want to authorize her to use it if that stepped on toes here. I already submitted it here.
Go for it.
Normies?? Pearls before swine, dude!
Seriously, I haven’t looked around the site for a policy about this, but I’d be very surprised if TPTB would begrudge you the opportunity to have it posted elsewhere, potentially for a wider audience.
I know Swiss did policy guidance on that at one point but I can’t find it.
IIRC: you are granting Glibs the right to publish your work (which includes the right to re-use in whole or in part until the heat death of the universe), but it’s not an exclusive grant. IOW, you can publish it elsewhere, or submit to us work which you own which has been previously published. For example, Ozymandias has published a lot of his work on his own blog.
While it is traditional to credit previously-published works, ie “this work previously published at tinfoil-news.com,” that would be a question for TPTB if they want a credit if Glibs publishes you first.
Thanks for writing, and good luck.
…work which you own which has been previously published, provided you did not grant the other publisher exclusive permanent rights.

“Everybody loves Cuomo,” said former state senator Ray Lesniak of Elizabeth, “Everybody waits every day for his daily briefings. He has seized the moment.”
False. Everybody loves Raymond. Cuomo can fuck off.
The far left is absolutely insane. The women in particular. You go to the socialist-feminist sites and they are all drooling over the guy – not his policies, him. For a bunch of “men are misogynists” types, they really are kinda pathetically schoolgirl-like on these sorts of things.
And make no mistake, other than De Blasio, no US politician has fumbled this crisis worse than Cuomo. But a shilling media is worth a thousand well-executed policies.
MN gov won’t be left out, he’s very competitive
Seriously?? Are they doing the “He’s so dreamy!” thing in so many words? I can’t even stand the thought of checking out any such sites for myself, but if they are – blecccch!
Yeah. A friend of mine said something about a Cuomo sandwich.

See also Clinton, Bill. He had feminists speculating that he was a “super male” with a huge cock.
In spite of his philandering and possibly rapey ways.
There were tons of “I had a sex dream with Trump and now I’m grossed out” tweets.
He was quite handsome for a long while.
I assume we already covered the Venezuela Navy vs. Cruise Ship war.
https://www.bbc.com/news/world-latin-america-52151951
What was our conclusion? Maduro is insane?
Everything about that one is nutty, from the Captain who thought his light ship could take on a giant cruise ship, to the Venezuelan spokesman who claimed the giant cruise ship intentionally rammed the small Venezuelan ship in international waters. Big-ass cruise ship ain’t ramming anything that can move out in open water. It is like trying to take down an ice skater with a Zamboni.
I doubt Deadpool was captain of the cruise ship.
Just watched Chris Wallace interview Gov. Whitmer – my condolences to all Michigan glibs – what a nasty woman.

Wine and Stakes is a great slogan, can I run your campaign?
I would go with as American as Pie
“Easy as pie.” ;-)
Yeah, I’d put things right in a matter of weeks. It would just be a race to see if they lynched me first, or if they simply impeached me.
I would buy a special VETO stamp.
My fantasy: an old fashioned quill pen. ‘Veto’ would be written on every shitty bill in calligraphy while wearing formal vetoing gloves.
I like the Veto stamp. You could pretty much put “Nope, unconstitutional” on a stamp too.
Put me on the Supreme court and they’d probably go all Senate on Julius Caesar on my ass.
“Uh… not an enumerated power, so unconstitutional. I don’t give a rip about your stare decisis, it ain’t a federal power granted by the constitution.”
Immediately followed by “Et. Tu, Clarence?”
I dunno… the White House Press Corps is doing a pretty good job of campaigning against Trump.

Not mine. But the pear tree in my moms yard looked nice today
People plant so many Bradford pear trees now, they’re starting to be considered a nuisance/invasive species.
They’re pretty, but I wish jacaranda trees could live in USDA zone 6b.
No idea what a Bradford pear trees. My mom has a two in one, in that there are green pears and red pears on it.
but the first page of google is all negative.
Why Bradford Pears Are The Worst Tree Ever | Southern Living
Sweet gum trees are worse. If I had any money and were still responsible for this house I’d cut mine down.
are there sour or bitter gum trees?
Well there are ones colloquially called black gums, which are called tupelos “officially”, I think.
Sweetgums are natural/native here, so no objection from me, even though they are a common weed. Bradford pears are not natural or native. They’re terrible in every way.
The way sweetgum leaves change in the fall is particularly beautiful too
The dogwoods are beautiful in my yard, and we have about an acre of violets that all suddenly bloomed this week. Yesterday I watched two falcons mating. (yeah yeah, go ahead and say it, but it was pretty cool)
Dammit. Condolences, OMWC and SP. I will leave it at saying death sucks.

A few days ago, the Mr. and I were out walking around our neighborhood, and we met one of our neighbors walking her dog. While we were chatting, she said something to the effect of “I’m a Democrat, but I really like what (our Republican governor) is doing.”

Good Morning, Old Man.
I’m so very sorry to hear about your pal. And that you weren’t allowed to see him.
I hope that as time passes all you will remember is the good stuff about the dude – particularly if he was an inappropriate shitlord like us at times.
I really dig your song. My go-to.
Make it a great day, people.
I’m sorry about your friend OMWC.
UCS, thank you for posting that story last night about ivermectin being a possible treatment for Corona. We give this to our dogs as a heartworm preventative. A single OTC $30 bottle treats 4 dogs for years (and no yearly heartworm test needed). My last bottle had expired over the winter, and I planned on stopping by the farm store next weekend to start up treatment again for the warm weather.
Well fuck. All of the major veterinary online stores are already sold out and some even have notices that they are restricting sales to only those who have a past purchase history with that specific company. I finally managed to find the last bottle left at another local farm store, and they are going to hold it for me.
I was not prepared for this. I made the correct determination that coronavirus was not going to be a threat to my family and wrote it off. I completely underestimated the media and government induced-hysteria to it. I had initially thought the panic would be over by now and everything would be back to normal. After the announcement by Walmart that they would be introducing food lines starting today, I went out and stockpiled a month of food for my family and dogs. I figure worst case scenario, I can always put a donkey or goat down for the dogs and a cow down for the family.
And the problem with the food lines is (aside from conjuring up commie images), we have no idea if it even works.
Maybe someone smarter than me can enlighten.
Yeh, I’m noticing week to week they’re slowly ratcheting it downwards until -ta-dah! – we’re stuck in our homes without the right to even go outside.
This is my fear.
I’ve never rooted for Trump – and Sweden – harder. If Sweden can pull it off, there will be hell to pay.
Indeed, I hope Sweden doesn’t give up on what they are doing as they are seeing an inevitable spike in cases right now. I really want them to succeed with this as an example to the rest of the world that closing everything was a terrible idea.
My wife was making comments about me over buying a couple of weeks ago. Yesterday, she called me a Boy Scout.
Thanks to all for your kind thoughts. I’m still grappling with this. My buddy was 20 years younger than I am. Every work day, at the end of the day, he’d come over to my office, we’d shut the door, and spend half an hour decompressing and talking through issues and how we’d team up to handle them. He was the absolute rock in my professional life, and we had discovered that we enjoyed hanging out as well. Last time he was over, we stayed up until 2:30 am talking about life, politics, and science. And SP was arranging to take his wife to the range for lessons.
Thinking and building with someone is a special zone. When your organization is up, your machines humming, your process flowing, your theory proven: it’s especially satisfying to have someone who reliably understands, usually agrees, always complements, and often fixes or fleshes out your own contributions.
Spending time with someone of considerable intellectual depth and personal warmth can’t be over-appreciated. From a certain similar perspective, I certainly empathize, and you have my sincerest condolences.
Trump is right. He’s maintaining a positive disposition. He’s urging for a return to normalcy. If this persists, the chances of this diminish.
I much prefer his approach than people (and doctors) saying things will ‘never be the same again’. We need to reign the doctors in because they’re not infallible and are coming from ONE perspective and that’s through the lends of public health.
It’s leaders (assuming we have any) who have to make the call for the well-being of an entire population. They have to make that risk calculation. Of course doctors will push for ‘shut it down until we find a vaccine’ but this is impractical if not absurd.
The unintended consequences of over reacting come with its own set of health ills as well including potentially suicides, bankruptcies, broken marriages and not to mention the psychological damage of not seeing a family member or friend dying alone.
through the LENSES of public health.
What the frick? I literally spelled ‘lens’ and it switches it to ‘lends’. I missed it but sooooo annoying.

Super nice prison for the most part, though.
I’ve been hearing more rumblings like this from my peeps lately. Last night, one of my buddies told me I didn’t sound crazy any more!

So while shopping today I bought some potatoes and realized I have never in my life cooked a potato at home. I remember baking some potatoes in a campfire once.
It can’t be that hard, right?
So easy.
Watch this.
If you’d rather read.
I’ve done this and it works great.
I use that method too. And from the same source (well, the book).
I used to love kenji but I saw some of his non food thoughts and seems a bit SJW to me, which is not necessarily a problem but lessens the experience.
He’s an idiot, but you aren’t dating him. He’s an excellent chef and teacher.
This might be the best link ever. Definitely giving it a try.
Awesome, thanks. But that guy uses way too much salt
If the Irish can cook it, so can you.
/rimshot.
I was taught that the savages were eating them raw until the British taught them how to cook.
Are potatoes not featured highly in Romanian cuisine?
yes. But before lock-down when I cooked I tended to cook lower carb and avoided potatoes. Then again I cooked a lot of pasta last couple of weeks.
Potatoes are more than just carbs. Lotsa nutrients in them.
More so when you dip them in Ketchup….or Catsup….ketchup?
Potatoes: the most versatile and delicious way to eat a lump of starch.
I’d actually started keto before the lockdown and since then I’ve mostly continued to do so. I haven’t stockpiled anything, but I do still have some potatoes which I will probably end up eating when it becomes difficult to get enough proteins and greens to sustain myself ketogenically. I still don’t fully understand how supply chains are being so drastically affected. There’s rationing at all the supermarkets, and the glut of out-of-town folks touring around filling their cars from every store in the area seems to have died down, yet for some reason, the supply chain itself, who must comprise the most essential of “essential” businesses, is apparently barely keeping up. Are businesses just playing it way safe and running on skeleton crews? Is this mostly a psychological effect causing a fall in production and delivery? It’s very strange. In the supermarkets it’s not like they are running out of everything but limit customers to three items of canned goods each, one packet of TP, etc. A lot of fresh produce and meats are either sold out or very low. People still raid the pasta and rice which I haven’t touched in weeks. What is happening to stop factories and agriculture from producing and shipping the normal amount of goods? Of course the basic lefty response is to ignore the details and act like it’s a stupid question, so I don’t get much out of the people I bring it up with, but I want to know why specifically supply chains are apparently struggling.
What I gave heard is the grocery stores are getting just as much as they always got.
The supply chain is constant.
People are consuming more of everything at home — food, TP — and less in public.
I wish I had saved some of that duck fat
I laughed
Since the weather is turning warmer, you should learn how to make potato salad. My favorite is the type made with red-skinned potatoes and sour cream, but the more standard variety made with common white potatoes and mayonnaise is great, too, if not overdressed.
If you can make good potato salad, you’d be welcome at any American potluck or picnic….when we can have those again. ***WHIMPER***
Mm, kartoffelnsalat with lots of dill and no eggs.
Ok, after all the links, this is gonna sound dumb….
But here goes: pierce with a fork, stick in the microwave for 6 minutes, cut open and fill with butter, sour cream and salt. Done.
Now, it ain’t fancy. It ain’t even the best baked potato. But it is easy and fairly idiot-proof. Prep time is less than 30 seconds. And you put enough butter, sour cream and salt on anything and it is probably gonna come out delicious.
“I like baked potatoes. I don’t have a microwave oven, and it takes forever to bake a potato in a conventional oven. Sometimes I’ll just throw one in there, even if I don’t want one, because by the time it’s done, who knows?”
— Mitch Hedberg
I like to start them in the microwave then finish in the oven.
This is good advice. Get a nice, crunchy skin suitable for eating with kosher salt.
I do them in the microwave. Wrap them in saran wrap (or similar–not foil!!) and zap for 5-7 minutes, depending on the size of the potato. When it starts getting soft enough to depress with your finger, it’s done. The part that’s touching the bottom gets soft a lot faster so you’ll want to rotate it about its long axis every couple of minutes.
You can cook squash the same way, except you don’t need the saran wrap. You *do* need to poke a few holes in it to let the steam vent, otherwise it will burst. Which can be pretty cool, depending on your mood.
I buy 5 and 10 pound bags, our son boils them in a big pot, and then we keep them in the fridge until we need them for something.
What I like to do is chop up and saute an onion in butter, then slice the cooked taters and toss them in. Maybe sprinkle a little salt and garlic powder.

Wife doesn’t like me calling it house arrest. ‘It’s not house arrest.’ ‘It is if the government is ordering me to stay home.’
I like the cut of your jib. I have to put up with NBC and CNN all day in my castle. The virus and the mom-panic of having to keep up with the news cycle 24/7 has pushed TDS into overdrive.
My main quarantine survival skill has turned out to be biting my tongue.

Whut?
I keep calling it corona panic at work in both email and video conferencing. The videos are the best because you can see who flinches.
Speaking of the campaign….
What are the odds that Biden actually makes it to the convention. He’s looking really, really rough. Like, he’s aged 10 years in the last 8 months. I really can’t imagine him making it to the general election intact, and the dems are already making a lot of noise about a replacement.
I doubt he’s the sort to take one for the team and bow out after winning the nomination… but what are the odds that they try to force it at the convention? If he keeps circling the drain like this, I can’t see them staying the course. The rate of deterioration is fast enough that he’ll be visibly frail and infirm on stage next to Trump. And there’s a lot of support for putting Cuomo in his place in the NY media.
And that could be a game changer. No baggage, no chance to run negative on him, no chance for the people to get tired of the shiny new toy. Given the chaos of the nation, it might work for the dems.
‘Hey, you’re not Biden!’
‘Am too!’
‘That’s a mask!’
‘This is not a Scooby-Doo episode. I’m not trying to fool you meddling kids! I’m Creepy Joe Beedon!’
‘Beedon? Get him!’
Clearly, you don’t live in New York.
Judging by the media, it is the opposite. Those doofuses have made by far the biggest hash of things in the nation, and they’ve exported their innoculum to the rest of us, accelerating the curve that we were supposed to be flattening.
But they looooove them some Cuomo on the boob tube.

Cuomo would be smarter to sit this one out and run in 2024
I hung out with my sister last night at a socially acceptable distance on her deck. We had some adult beverages and discussed out current situations in this time of fear.
She is a life long Dem and has gone to rallies for Hillary, Obama, and Kerry. The coverage of the COVID pandemic has convinced her that the media is using fear to score points against Trump and make him look bad. They don’t care about saving lives or providing useful information. She has no confidence In any of the Dem candidates this year and will likely vote for Trump.
We discussed that Trump is overall not a great leader, but he challenged the narrative being generated by the press.
I know this is a single case, but I have seen similar sentiments from others like her. The constant Trump attacks by the entrenched government and news media is backlashing. They are moving moderates away from the Dems towards Trump.
Best of all possible timelines?
In the best of all timelines China would be a functional democracy, Trump wouldn’t be our president, and someone like Tulsi would be the Dem front runner. She and I disagree on nearly everything, but she at least has some integrity.
And her campaign would be selling surfing calendars to raise money.
Friend of mine from high school is a life long Dem. He’s also somewhat religious. I haven’t talked to him in person in years, but judging on his Facebook posts I think he is straying away from the Dems. I would say he will be voting for Trump, but I don’t think he’s voting for the Dems.
Wouldn’t say*
One group I’m convinced they’re undercounting is people who didn’t vote for Hillary or Trump…stayed at home…who are now going to vote for Trump. I think there are way way more of those people than the pollsters or the media realizes
Yep. There was a significant chunk of Team Red types that just couldn’t go there in 2016. But here we are, and guess what? The world didn’t blow up, until Corona the economy was doing well (yeah yeah structural problems but we didn’t have high unemployment or slow growth), and we hadn’t started any new major military offensives. In other words, things were more or less the same in 2019 as they were in 2016.
I’m in that group. My intention at this point is to cast my first vote for a Republican since Reagan. I’ve been team L since learning what that was in college.
Florida, right?
This is huge. In your case, Trump’s preventing the needle from moving is vital.
Yeah, and we keep importing New York, New Jersey and Canadian refugees. So our tilt to the left continues apace.
I think he’s in trouble.. May be no fault of his known, but the economy is headed right for a Depression. Unless this thing blows over fast.
It should come roaring back…. but that’s all about timing, isn’t it? Another month and he’ll be golden. Two more months? I don’t know if we can sustain that.
Nah, we have a guaranteed recession at this point. It will still suck in the fall.
^this. And headed toward depression territory, because at some point it’s not just the borderline businesses and gamblers with crazy leverage that are failing. Recessions are healthy, the economy sheds deadwood and comes back stronger, depressions have longer term psychological and systemic effects and are decidedly not healthy.
as Neph sez: look up
who shows up where
Kenosha, my friends: who comes back to the polls in Kenosha
Im here late, as usual. Sorry to hear about your friend, Old Guy.
But you’re clearly in the right place- pretty sure I learned this gem from you:
“a sorrow shared is halved; a joy shared is doubled”.
So I was making my third to last drink last night/this morning. I keep a bag of ice on the stoop/porch because my ice maker can’t keep up. As I was bending over filling my high end plastic drink ware gravity suddenly shifted and I took two stumbles to the starboard and face planted into a deck post and the gravel. I have road rash on my right forearm and left knee as well as a fat lip from the deck post. I apologize to anyone who tried to understand what I said last night.
Ouch. Did the bag of ice end up being useful at least? For keeping the swelling down?
Naaaah, I’m not wasting ice on a fat lip. They go away.
“my third to last drink”
You know how to write an opening sentence!
A True Glib!
“I have road rash on my right forearm and left knee as well as a fat lip from the deck post.”
lol. Amateur! lol! Pics pls!
On a related note: my lack of sleep combined with my insistence to consume scotch and sodas at night resulted in me falling off a hi rail vactor thankfully located in the rear depths of my shop’s yard earlier this week. Scraped the leg, arm, wrist, and would have had a head injury but I was wearing my hard hat! YEAH!
Anyway, keep the injuries off the face, newb.
I like the “gravity shifted” description.
Way back when I was in high school, a buddy described an incident with Quaaludes. He said he didn’t feel anything, so he went out back by the pool. Suddenly, the whole world went up, really, really fast. Woke up with a fat lip and a bloody shirt and no idea how he ended up in a bedroom.
My worst version of that – which took place during my years of strict sobriety even though no one believes that but it is true!!!! – was when I somehow fell, bounced my head of a toilet or bathroom counter, which resulted in 14 stitches in the middle of my forehead.
I am a man so I took towel off the towel rack and tight that mug tight and went back to sleep. Thankfully I woke up soon after to go to the ER.
The important thing for a concussion is to get a good sleep in right away.
Like I have never fallen on my face before. And hard hats are for overhead dangers, not falling. I suggest a bike or climbing helmet from now on.

I’m glad you’re okay.
If you head out to a store you can make it look like you fight for tp and Lysol wipes.
No TP to be had in our area today.
But I scored some paper towels.
Condolences, westernsloper.

Did you turn it on? Is it toast?
Im reluctant to confirm it, but Im pretty sure the crystal is cracked.
true shitlord Glib debauchery
next time you should trip over a growroom crock and fall facefirst into some Mexican dude’s ass, but still a full 9.4
carry our banner proud !!!
No cocaine and or hookers involved so it was low rate ass hat drunkery not true debauchery. I do have those stories though.
Seems fishy, but interesting

Utter nonsense.
They’ve studied the genome and know the lineage of the virus. “made in a lab” is silly, given that knowledge. Besides, the topic of the tweets isn’t even the Covid-19 virus. It is just plain goofy.
Plus, cancer research and genetically engineering a bioweapon out of a virus are pretty far apart on the spectrum of science skills.
I don’t see the Chinese pulling off some kind if bio-designed virus when they could just mix up a cocktail of various existing viruses from other species, infect a few inmates with the best candidates, and see what makes it to Wang in the next cell. When Wang starts to cough and sneeze take a sample and work with it.
A DDG search for the doctor’s name turned up Snopes’s take on the story:
Considering the source, take that as you will.
It is entirely possible for everyone in a story to be full of crap.
Everything is tiger king in 2020
Dang.
Now I’m going to be seeing the world through that prism.
Seems a little too accurate for comfort.
Jonathan Ward’s ICON Derelict builds are a fun YouTube watch.
Walter Huston – you’re dumb!
So adding some smoked pulled pork to the Costco instant pho bowls is a winner.
Costco instant pho bowls, huh? My kids are all-in on instant noodle things. I’ll have to give it a try.
Those Snapdragon brand ones are pretty damn good for instant pho.
Wow…. expensive online…
$30 on amazon for 9 2.1 oz packages. Yikes!
When I see those things at Costco, I usually buy *one* at publix or target to see if I like it before buying the Costco 12-pack. In other Costco news, my local one had a pretty ample supply of toilet paper this morning. Looks like the truly chronic shortage will be cleaning wipes.
Costco is definitely the fancier choice. We switched to BJ’s because of proximity. And they don’t have pho.
Nice idea, I’m making for my son’s lunch – spouse smoked pork yesterday.
NEW YORK STATE IS IN TROUBLE! WE NEED HELP! THE CORONA IS KILLING US ALL!!!
State budget has $144.5M for Lake Placid Olympic venues
Thankfully, some things remain the same.
What’s to upgrade? It’s basically a high school track field there.
There’s a good pizza place across from the rink though. And another restaurant, the name escapes me, one of the last places I saw my uncle. But no one’s going there for the Olympic center.
Without millions in subsidies, how are you gonna run a bobsled run, downhill ski run, olympic ski jumping facility or speedskating arena? Those places probably bring in well in excess of $10k per year. Almost enough to cover 1/8 of the custodial bill.
“What’s to upgrade?”
The bank accounts of corrupt officials, contractors, and lobbyists?
The Trump campaign ads practically write themselves.
Interesting, I always thought Hobbes was his first name.
A good way to conserve the tp is to get some tush wipes, which seemed to be readily available on Amazon.
Don’t hoard my baby needs!
YOUR BABY DOESN’T USE DUDE WIPES
Doesn’t really square with “The right to freedom of association is recognized as a human right, a political right and a civil liberty. … The United States Constitution explicitly provides for ‘the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances’ in the First Amendment.“
When the guard come to make sure we don’t leave the houses, we might get to use the third amendment for once.
We’re at War against the virus so it doesn’t apply right now.
What part of “the constitution is not a suicide pact” do you fail to understand?
Now shut up and do as you are told, plebe.
Sssshhhhh. This is different unparalleled times. Humankind has never gone through anything like this!
Every politician that is implementing these draconian measures needs to be disqualified from running for public office ever again. Even if it was a necessary evil (it isn’t ), then they need to pay the price, too. Instead, the public will probably reward them for their “strong leadership”.
the public will play petty identity politics . . . as always
My suggestion a couple of days ago was public execution of it turns out to be wrong and life imprisonment and stripped of assets if they’re right. If it’s that essential that others should be improvised and destitute for this, surely they would wish no less for themselves.
Priests reveal how coronavirus crisis has unleashed ‘intense demonic activity’
Is anyone else excited for how weird it’s going to get?
Well I did watch Constantine last night. Reality show?
RIP Tom Dempsey. He was already suffering from dementia for years, I’m not entirely ready to call this a coronavirus death
Sorry for your loss OM. That especially sucks you didn’t get to say your final farewells. Just another terrible consequence of this virus panic.
Has the discussion concerning the possibility of people having contracted COVID19 earlier than January taken place?
As in, people remembering having the three main symptoms–fever, cough, and difficulty breathing–as early as last fall?
