The US Open (tennis) starts today. Here’s hoping they actually finish it. And the NFL and soccer are about to start for real. The Community Shield doesn’t count. That’s sports.
Roman emperor Caligula was born on this day. He shares it with another Roman emperor Commodus, Italian educator Maria Montessori, female baseball player Lizzie Arlington, actor Fredric March, comedian Buddy Hackett, Canadian hockey legend Jean Beliveau, baseball great Frank Robinson, Irish singer Van Morrison, actor Richard Gere, useless District Attorney Marcia Clark, track and field legend Edwin Moses, outfielder Claudell Washington, rocker Gina Schock, pitcher Tom Candiotti, pitcher Hideo Nomo, singer Debbie Gibson, comedic actor Chris Tucker, and Saudi crown prince Mohammed bin Salman.
That’s actually a pretty decent list. And now…the links!
This headline isn’t quite accurate. It’s after about 90 days of violence, not a weekend of it. Also, it’s after the betting lines put Trump at a dead heat with Biden once people across the country are growing tired of these leftist mayors and governors turning a blind eye while cities are burned to the fucking ground. At least that’s how I see the timeline. Feel free to disagree.
Well it’s about fucking time. Seriously, how long is this gonna drag out? They need to charge those idiots already.
I sure wish this story was dominating the news. It’s an historic occasion that deserves a hell of a lot of attention. Unfortunately it won’t get what it deserves because orangemanbad. Well, that’s a damn shame, in my opinion.
PAY ATTENTION TO MEEEEEE! Oh wait, stop paying attention to me. No wait, I’m sorry so pay attention to me again…and buy my albums. ::sigh:: Somebody always gotta be outraged. Just be happy she’s living a healthier lifestyle, people. Is that so fucking hard?
Heaven forbid! Oh my: The pool at The Apartments at Palmetto Compress was packed with revelers, who also crowded the side of the swimming area and even stood on top of the pool house, the fire chief said.
Not the pool house? That building with stairs leading to the roof and a railing around it and lawn chairs put on top surely wasn’t built for that!
Fortunately nobody was charged (since the mask “laws” aren’t actually laws). And no fines were issued (since they’re most likely unconstitutional).
Whatever, they’ve got insur…oops. See, these cretins waving away the looting and rioting don’t see downstream effects and don’t care. These poor business-owners are completely fucked. But I guess that’s life, innit you antifa-apologist fuckheads?
This headline is a good question. My answer: they’ll stay empty because the workers won’t want to go back after getting a taste of work from home and the possibility that they can move to a less oppressive area tax-wise and a city that’s not teetering on insolvency, isn’t full of dirty cops and politicians, and where their kids can get a decent education.
When a business is paying $90 million to get out of town, alarm bells should be ringing. Hey, maybe they can move the hobos there rather than just letting them shoot up and shit in the streets. I’m sure the taxpayers won’t mind picking up the tab. At least the ones who aren’t already fleeing.
Well I’m glad you’re seeing the benefit here, you asshole. Unfortunately, you’re an incredibly small minority of the population and these mask mandates are causing permanent emotional and mental scarring of a generation of children. Not to mention, nobody is preventing you from wearing a sack over your head all the time. In fact, you probably should. Ad I say that as a person who has no idea what you look like.
Hey, it’s still like this! But it would be a great song even if it weren’t.
Now have a great day, dear friends!
!
I can only assume this is for Jean Beliveau.
another Roman emperor Commodus
The shittiest of the Roman Emperors.
The empire went in the toilet with that guy in charge.
You can’t ignore the effect of the Senate. All the porcelain down in their legislation placed an enormous drain on the economy.
*narrows gaze*
Good morning!
And it’s a lovely morning! At least until the heat index gets to 110 in a few hours.
55 here this morning!
58 and light rain. Quite pleasant!
It is indeed a day that feels one should be lazy after an incredible weekend.
So that’s why the house was a comfortable temperature for once.
“We all must come together — elected officials, community leaders, all of us — to stop the cycle of violence,” the governor said in a news release Sunday evening.
Now do what I tell you.
“We all must come together — elected officials, community leaders, all of us — to stop the cycle of violence”…
…otherwise those evil psychopaths who have a different political philosophy than us might get control and cause a civil war!!!!!!!!
Worse, they will defeat any and all efforts we are putting in place to rig the coming election in our favor, and bad orange man will then not only have 4 more years to expose and happier the efforts of the weaponized Obama bureaucracy, but will do incalculable damage to our operatives and power hungry credentialed inept elite political class’ egos. And that later one is the one that hurts!
“We all must come together — elected officials, community leaders, all of us — to stop the cycle of violence,” the governor said in a news release Sunday evening.
He said, from behind the barrel of a gun.
Government is just what we all do together, right?
I’m not eating a slice of that pizza.
It’s my favorite way to tag some brutally painful govt behavior for the benefit of the progtards who have preached it at me.
You can’t demand consistency from leftists/statists. Hypocrisy is built in to those worldviews.
Fuck you I won’t do what you tell me.
Good morning, all. I’m relatively new here. Posted a few times. Figured I’d formally introduce myself. I’m a mechanical engineer and my spirit animal is Joanna The Goanna. Love you, bye.
Good morning, Tulpa.
Now fuck off.
We’re going to need your opinion on pineapple on pizza.
Ummm… I fucking love it… Not with ham though; bacon is the only proper pineapple pizza pairing.
Welp, it was nice knowing you. Someone will be along with an excoriating remark that will leave a small crater soon.
I await my summary judgment.
KA-BOOM!
Good man.
Welcome to Winnersville!
Just don’t go to the Minnesoda initiation, they ain’t Nice.
Welcome, fellow pineapple brethren!
You’re a MONSTER!!
The judges would have also accepted “crispy prosciutto.”
I’m pissed that I can’t get crispy pepperoni unless I order an entire pie. Nobody around here bakes a pie for walk-in customers with pepperoni on it, they just toss it on a slice when you order one.
/rant
I took a two year break from Glibs due to a job change and I just jumped back in this spring, so I can’t remember if I’ve ever opined on pineapple pizza. I support it.
Welcome to the splitter camp. The kulaks are next door.
Formally? Does this mean I need to put on pants?
Nah, Zoom formal works.
Raging viagra erection just off camera?
Add spank noises to make it extra creepy & ackward?
For some reason I’m reminded of the medal of honor award ceremony in Forest Gump…
You have to take this quiz so we know what kind of libertarian you are.
Don’t do it, he’s just harvesting data.
He got a government contract? Say hello to General Jones and his son.
one true libertarian
Same.
I gave my name as Richard Kizinia.
I took it and got Glibertarian. Do all responses lead to Glibertarian? 🙂
No, only a specific, elite set, of responses will get you to be a glibertarian.
Ah, cool. I see now that others have posted different results.
No. I got LP libertarian, which is total bunk. Test is flawed.
Mises loves all his libertarian children.
I LOL’d
Me too.
Yeah, I got Reasonid, which is nonsense.
I’m actually surprised. I expected more reasonids than we got.
So far, I’ve only see two types listed. How many possibilities are there?
6 types. I’ve seen 4 so far.
I think it’s just “Glibertarian” and “bootlicker”. Really, aren’t those the only choices?
Glib, only 9% lefty.
You will not tolerate bad faith arguments, and any level of communism.
Damn skippy.
Holy shit, one of the answers starts with To Be Sure
I got Glibertarian. I’ve been lurking for a while.
Welcome to the Club. I got Glib as well. That’s how you know it’s #science.
Same here. And scared of what the busybullies will do if Feeble Joe gets elected.
I’m apparently a Glib. Who knew?
Took it and got Glib as well. What’s the descriptions of the other results?
Brown will convene a community forum which will include Portland Mayor Ted Wheeler, Black protest organizers and community leaders to discuss racial justice and police reform, according to a statement from the governor’s office.
Finally, we’ll see real progress.
Excelsior!
Nothing says “progress” like complete and utter capitulation to the Marxists who are encouraging the rioters that are destroying your town.
I am expecting that once the elections are over TPTB will unleash the LEO’s to round up and charge all these rioters. Even the DNC can’t continue with this level of discord. Once the useful idiots have served their purpose they can start serving their time. That will be delicious.
I expect that these asshats really believe they will just be able to turn off this behavior when they win. The usual propagandists would write up & report that the crackdowns are necessary because the people destroying shit no longer would be presented as being engaged in some kind of mostly peaceful heroic struggle, but in undermining the efforts of the masters to create utopia. But I think these asshats will not just give up their LARPing fun when they don’t get what they want, and it will need to get ugly. Of course, the usual cuntes will do whatever it takes to misinform the fucking serfs and keep them in line.
☝?
The more organized and DNC affiliated groups may comply, but there’s a large portion of them that are enjoying being off the leash. I don’t expect them to give it up so easily.
Even if large swaths “go rogue” and don’t come to heel when called by the Dems, the states will easily be able to sqaush them. The level of rioting we have been seeing is well within the power of even the smallest state, to put down. These riots continue because the state officers are allowing it. Once biden is in charge the riots will end, either voluntarily, or they will focefully be put down. And no one will dare call it fascism then.
“I expect that these asshats really believe they will just be able to turn off this behavior when they win.”
They absolutely can. All they have to do is actually hold them in jail when they get arrested. It’s the same people getting arrested every single night. Stop the National Lawyers Guild bail paying, stop the Soros money buying gasoline, hotel rooms, food, etc. Then the insurrection dies inside of two days.
Like, look at the vans these people have. They have standard work vans, covered in Antifa and BLM slogans. Where did those work vans come from? Someone bought those, these are not the work vans of plumbers and HVAC guys turned Marxist agitators. We’ve all seen the pictures of pallets of bricks staged on protest routes.
My theory: the next time these turds break in, loot, burn, or assault a noble, beautiful, stunningly brave Person of Color, the Portland authorities will announce that they are now racist alt right white supremacist Trump supporters, and will round them up.
No. Too many of these groups have slipped the leash already, and Portland is the perfect example of it. They told everyone who would listen that the riots would stop as soon as Feds left town and the courthouse. Well, they didn’t stop in the slightest and now they are shitting themselves that people are noticing even when they have done everything to bury this. And the riots pop up everywhere and cause too much damage in too many cities. When you add that attempt at forced fist raising in DC… it just looks worse and worse for the left at this time.
Once the election is over these riots will either have served their purpose or will have been detrimental. Law enforcement will be given free rein to scoop up all the primary actors they have been taking notes on during all these daily “catch and release” operations. The first rank will be off the streets facing trial and the lower ranks will get the hint. Funds will also dry up making it even less interesting for the participants. None of this will be covered by the media – they’ll be oblivious.
The DNC has no use for these riots if they win. They can’t fulfil any desires this mob is demanding. Better that the anonymous ringleaders fade away in obscurity.
Trump has no use for them either. He will look good to his base in going after these anarchists.
I expect that the Law Enforceent community understands this and is preparing for either candidate to win.
Why aren’t they handing the bill to the local BLM chapter?
“I think that is price-gouging and they should contact the attorney general,” said Andrea Jenkins, vice president of the Minneapolis City Council. “That is a symbol of capitalism run amok.”
Leave. And never look back. Minneapolis is done.
They should apply to the Ford Foundation for a grant.
Will probably break my vow and check it out, if only to gauge the cringe-factor.
Just comment on the game and otherwise shit the fuck up.
Whoops, not only responded in the wrong place but with a typo at that. I’m going back to bed.
Wow, I didn’t realize that Israeli commercial aviation couldn’t fly over Saudi Arabia (article says they did for the first time on the way to UAE). I bet they can’t fly over Iran and maybe several others as well. Lots of gas probably gets burned up taking the long way around nearby countries.
It’s cheaper than losing the aircraft and passengers.
I’m not sure any airline flies over Iran unless it is their destination. Could be wrong, but pretty sure that used to be the case at least.
“Proof that our air defense network is superior to that of the infidels” – Iranian Information Minister.
Probably a good idea given their proclivity for shooting down commercial airliners.
“I’m not sure any airline flies over Iran unless it is their destination”
I certainly thought this, but it is not true. I flew over Tehran in a flight from Heathrow to Bangalore, 7 years ago or so. It was on Lufthansa, so the Germans may have special deals with them. I had been sleeping and woke up and looked down at a city below me. When I checked the in flight map and saw it was Tehran, I immediately began scanning the skies for missile contrails.
Did it on Air France from Paris to Chennai. Pretty sure that (with a very very few exceptions, like the Norks and the Saudi/Israel thing just mentioned) international air traffic controllers all pretend that geopolitical disputes don’t exist. So flying over Iran is totally an everyday thing.
Huh. Not the first time I have been wrong. I have a vague recollection of being told we had to skirt Iran on some flight or another I was on. I could not tell you from where or when. My usual flying strategy was to stay sober enough to navigate myself down a jetway. Being a professional it usually meant I was drunk af.
Buying into the US Propoganada much? Those are clearly chemtrails.
“Contrails” are just the non-US-ian term for what normal people call chemtrails.
Did that idiot Krugman chime in with his Broken Window’s stupidity about the destruction of property in Portland and Minneapolis?
Economic opportunity abounds! The credentialed elite class will have lots of opportunity for graft and extortion. And they will find a way to punish anyone that decides to call it quits in that environment. After all, businesses exist to pay the government (taxes) and to employ those government deems worthy. Fuck those that think their businesses are so they can earn the rewards of hard work and the risks they took. Meritocracies deny government types the much needed ability to pick winners and losers…
Anti-SCIENCE misinformation
Twitter on Sunday took down a tweet containing a false claim about coronavirus death statistics that was made by a supporter of the baseless QAnon conspiracy theory — a post that President Donald Trump had retweeted earlier in the day.
The tweet — which has been replaced with a message saying, “This Tweet is no longer available because it violated the Twitter Rules — from “Mel Q,” copied from someone else’s Facebook post, claimed that the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention had “quietly” updated its numbers “to admit that only 6%” of people listed as coronavirus deaths “actually died from Covid,” since “the other 94% had 2-3 other serious illnesses.”
That’s not what the CDC said.
——-
The CDC’s latest regular update to a public statistics page on the pandemic — there was nothing especially “quiet” about it — said that for 6% of the deaths included in its statistics, “Covid-19 was the only cause mentioned” on the deceased person’s death certificate.
That is not at all the same thing as saying only 6% of reported Covid-19 deaths “actually died” from Covid-19. It simply means that the other 94% were listed as having at least one additional factor contributing to their death.
For example, the other 94% includes people whose death certificate listed both Covid-19 and obesity, both Covid-19 and diabetes, or both Covid-19 and heart disease — among other conditions.
People can live with obesity, diabetes or heart disease for years but then get infected with Covid-19 and die quickly. The fact that they also had an underlying condition does not mean that Covid-19 was not a major reason, or the major reason, they died when they did.
There is no secret about the fact that pre-existing health conditions can cause people to experience more severe problems from Covid-19. The CDC has long said that older adults and people with other underlying health conditions are more likely to become seriously ill.
Spinning like an olympic figure skater.
Keep fear alive, at all costs. Don’t relinquish the narrative. Those kids at hat pool party are all gonna die.
“That’s not what they said”.
Yes, because the illiberal, illiterate degenerates at Twitter know how to parse, and interpret statistics while considering causality and correlation.
Sssssssure.
lmao the branch covidians spinning this are hilarious.
Yes. Evidently, the link between being unhealthy and dying of something an otherwise healthy person could easily survive is a conspiracy.
The Internet carried on just fine with the general public being able to post whatever they wanted except kiddie porn for 25 years, but now all of a sudden we have to CRACK DOWN ON MISINFORMATION! Like, who died and made you god?
I didn’t read the article because I don’t want to get riled up. Sounds like this person is an insecure narcissist.
It’s pretty disgusting how doctors casually dismiss the psychological trauma masks are causing.
Masks aren’t liberating. They’re anxiety and traumatic.
For the benefit they *may* provide (and studies indicate it at being low), the trade-off is terrible.
I’ve heard some schools are requiring them for kids as young as kindergarteners. That’s insane.
I can honestly say none of my little kids have worn a mask ever through this exercise in obeisance to our masters. And they never will. Not at school, not in a store, not anywhere. If a place requires them for children, I’ll simply not go.
It’s child abuse. Full stop. How parents allow this is incredible.
We’re stuck for stores. Luckily, my daughter doesn’t go often and it’s for a few minutes. We’ve scaled back shopping. I don’t understand someone who thinks going to a mall and seeing everyone in masks thinks this is acceptable behavior. It’s depressing. It INFURIATES me that the motherfucken psychopath public officials force this on kids.
At school, they have to wear it the halls. I told my daughter every chance you get to lower it. LIMIT the use of that stupid thing.
I don’t own a mask and never will but will have to wear to go grocery shopping. As if you can catch it there.
People are retards. They really are for buying into this.
Two words: I’m exempt.
The district I work for requires them for everyone. Know what’s the saddest thing I’ve seen in 2020? A class of kindergartners, masked up and social distancing on the fucking playground. Between the riots, the news, and COVID theater, I’d been taking this year pretty well, but seeing that last week had an emotional effect on me. I think facial expressions are one of those aspects of social interactions that we take for granted. You can feel the change in how the kids interact at all grade levels. What makes it worse is that I participate to keep my bills paid and I feel like I’m selling my soul. The adults wait until no one is looking and drop the mask when what the students need most is to see adults acting courageously sane. I know of one True Believer on staff and everyone else is just trying to not rock the boat and hope it all will end soon.
I feel like wood chippers are the least of our worries and may be too kind anyway.
It’s depraved. This is ALL on the following people: Tam, Fauci, Birx and all the premiers and governors who mandate them. THEY ARE INFLICTING PSYCHE TRAUMA ON CHILDREN.. Them and them ALONE.
Thankfully, it’s not the case here. But it is for Grade Five and up which I still find despicable.
I don’t think I could handle that. My 3 year old wears a mask sometimes (she has grasped the rhythm of wearing it to the grocery store), but she has a 15 minute expiration time before it ends up on her forehead or her neck or on my hand. I’m not gonna wrestle a mask onto an unwilling 3 year old, and I’m just waiting for some Karen to make a comment about my kid’s mask being around her forehead. I’ll end up getting kicked out of the store.
“Are you mocking my child’s craniorespiratory deformity? What is wrong with you? Picking on a poor child like that!”
Too many people conflate their hatred of the president with the spread of disease. That is why we see otherwise perfectly healthy kids and parents, people who have zero chance of getting the disease, with masks. And yes, it is fucking sickening.
Wyman is an instructor at Michigan State University. She is working on a children’s book.
And of course this is what she does for a living.
Who is this Kenisha? She thinks Adele should be arrested?
Hey Kenisha. Do you eat lasagne or pizza? Or sushi? Or Korean beef? Or souvlaki? Or falafel? Or tacos? Or hot and sour soup? I’m betting you do. Please stop. Cultural appropriation. It’s insulting.
Nothing says equality and openness like telling people how they must dress.
Fly in planes, ride in cars, use air conditioning, indoor plumbing…
Seriously, though. By what rules is a Westerner not supposed to wear a kimono, but the Japanese are okay to wear suits? They were colonial shit lords just like us, weren’t they?
Arguably much worse – Nanking, for example.
A lot of these supposedly universal doctrines are actually quite specific to (the left’s view of) American history. Cultural appropriation has a degree of internal logic when applied to Native Americans and black people (though it’s still basically collectivist and stupid).
When it’s broadened out to people like the Japanese it’s obviously meaningless and racist, since it’s not applied in the opposite direction. Whitey is at the top of the pyramid, even if he’s Polish or something, while the Japanese can only be oppressed relative to whitey even though they had a vicious empire and are now an economic superpower.
Cf Edward Said downplaying the Ottoman Empire.
It isn’t a universal doctrine at all; it is a bludgeon to use to attack whoever happens to be the enemy of the day. There is only one motive that drives the left – power (which of course is why antifa so perfectly mimics the true fascist movements of the 30s).
The Ainu and Ryukyuans might have something to say about the status of ethnic Japanese as poor oppressed minorities. The Zainichi too.
I was going to say being ‘oppressed’ would be news to the Japanese.
And how is it a ‘universal doctrine’?
I bet you none of those assholes follow their CA rules.
Burakumin, too.
https://www.virology.ws/2020/08/13/the-future-trajectory-of-sars-cov-2/
“How long it will take before SARS-CoV-2 changes sufficiently to become common cold CoV #5 is unknown. It depends in part on how well the experimental vaccines currently under development work. I suspect that none of these vaccines will completely block viral reproduction, although they may mitigate disease. Consequently SARS-CoV-2 will continue to circulate and the mutations that will eventually reduce its virulence will arise. I do think that at one day in the future we will no longer need any of the SARS-CoV-2 vaccines that are currently in development, because the virus will no longer cause serious disease. For this reason we do not have vaccines against the four common cold CoVs – there is no medical need for them.
To put this another way, here we have a pandemic virus whose emergence could have been stopped had we invested a few billion dollars in development of pan-CoV antiviral drugs. Instead, many companies and governments are spending billions of dollars to develop vaccines that will one day be obsolete. This lack of vision should infuriate every human on Earth.
Pandemic viruses will continue to emerge from animal reservoirs in the coming years. Will we be ready for them? I doubt it.”
https://www.virology.ws/2020/08/13/the-future-trajectory-of-sars-cov-2/
Oh believe me, sir. I’m infuriated.
There is no way 20% of infections are causing serious damage. Prolly closer to 2%
Virginia Did a Serological Study and found that 2.5% of participants had antibodies (also assumes that some of those tested didn’t have antibodies that had dissipated as most evidence points to antibodies only existing for 3 months). Now, I don’t know for sure they tested people at random, however, assuming they did a proper study, it would mean that ~200k people were infected (2.5% of the population) whereas only 100k people (at the time of the study) had known infections. From what I’ve seen from the homeless antibodies to this study, every significant covid metric should be halved.
I’d like to point out another big thing. nearly 100% of all pediatric hospitalized covid patients are hospitalized for non covid reasons. My wife is a pediatric nurse at a large educational childrens hospital and she’s not aware of a single pediatric patient that has been admitted for covid. They are admitted for something else, then tested for covid, then isolated if they are positive. Additionally all of the language I’ve found as it relates to hospitalization is very telling, “hospitalized WITH covid”. This also explains why deaths in children are a statistical zero.
The pool area at the apartment complex — which advertises as being “just steps from the University of South Carolina” — was shuttered until fire officials can verify it’s capacity.
Jenkins said he would recommend keeping the pool shut for the foreseeable future as a safety precaution during the virus outbreak.
I’d advise you to kill yourself, Jenkins. As a safety precaution.
People who just say “insurance” infuriate me. They’ve probably had a car fixed up like new because the other driver was at fault and had a good experience. Well, property insurance doesn’t work that way, not every disaster is covered under a basic policy, adjusters haggle over prices for months or years, and you can’t get that time back – unlike a car, where they often just provide you with a rental. Can’t really do that with your place of business, although there is in some cases loss of business income coverage. Sometimes the company refuses to cover legitimate damages and there is no recourse.
Mises.org just posted an article about syndicalism, which I guess is what is going on in these riots.
https://mises.org/wire/americas-riots-are-just-latest-version-marxist-syndicalism?utm_source=Mises+Institute+Subscriptions&utm_campaign=bdc838c443-EMAIL_CAMPAIGN_2020_08_28_02_44&utm_medium=email&utm_term=0_8b52b2e1c0-bdc838c443-228689157
Months or years? Um….not so often.
No recourse? “DOI” “Courts” “AGs”
/fed up insurance guy
I know people, and one church, that have not completed repairs from hurricane Michael. Oct 10, 2018.
My parents were refused money for a the repair of their roof trusses, shingles only. Yes, they could take a mega-corporation to court in theory. Most sane people realize that if they do not win, which is very likely, they will be in an even worse position.
There was some pissant F1 tornado that hit Springfield MA, I believe. A year later there were no permits issued for rebuilding because the PTB hadn’t agreed on a community master redevelopment plan.
There were still wrecked houses years after Superduperstorm Sandy blew past the southern shore of NYC – because all the restoration money was laundered through the city government.
Well, two anecdotes sure prove that to me…It’s not like I worked thousands of claims over a 7 year period! And, of course, there are no AG’s with ambitions for higher office that promise to stick it to the BIG EVUL INSURANCE INDUSTRY! (CA, NY, FL, MS, LA, et al).
Insurance companies only exist to
poisondeny their customers!Contingency fee lawyers are a rare breed these days, and state laws regarding bad faith denials certainly do not have treble damages and punitive damages.
I am quite sure there are no counsel advertising “no fee unless we win!” I have never seen them on TV or the net or heard on radio.
Yeah, my father was in claims for 25 years before he retired. If any of his adjusters dragged a claim out that long, they’d have been reamed a new asshole.
The claims don’t stop coming in. Taking that long to settle one means a backlog. Backlogs lead to unhappy policyholders. Unhappy policyholders lead to reduced numbers of policyholders and reduced premiums collected.
Insurance companies have every reason in the world to quickly settle a claim. If they’re taking forever, call your agent and the company’s claims manager and watch how fast things typically get moving.
To be fair it probably isn’t the insurance company’s fault anymore by now, but the crooked contractors. And just exhaustion dealing with everything on the part of the homeowners.
Yep to all of this.
/another insurance-adjacent guy
Regardless, insurance isn’t some painless magic bullet that makes rioting and destroying the property of innocents ok.
But it’s economically stimulating!
/Krugabe
For sure. Particularly for some of those businesses, insurance cannot make them whole. Imagine a pub with a massive hardwood bar, built in overstuffed wood booths with coat pegs everywhere, the walls covered in photographs and old newspapers. You’re not going there because they have the best beer selection. The bartender can mix the standard cocktails, hes not innovating. The food is standard American pub fare. You’re going there because its a place that people in your neighborhood have been drinking and talking and eating and laughing at for over 50 years.
You cannot replace that hardwood bar, they don’t make those anymore. Same for the booths. The pictures and newspapers are literally irreplaceable. If the pub ever reopens, its not gong to be the same. The coziness is gone, the sense of history is gone. Not to mention, people are gonna go find another place to drink and hang out. By the time the pub is ready to reopen, will they come back?
There is a bit of both. The houses in my neighborhood are all the same age, and so all are starting to develop leaks in their piping- which sometimes translates to slab leaks. We developed one of these leaks, and then started doing research on the claims process. After going through interviews with several realtors in the area, and homeowners, the only correlation to whether or not the insurance paid for damages was time spent haggling with the insurance company. Early homeowners (4 – 5 yrs ago) had their claims paid quickly, but these days, the only way to get the insurance company to pay is to spend weeks appealing. And that is after 2-3 weeks waiting on some guy to deny it and then send you a written notice.
I am sure that the insurance company would love to clear through a backlog, but they also don’t want to pay too much to clear through the backlog. And they have faith that if they just drag things out long enough, many homeowners will just give up.
It’s not violence. It’s just property damage.
Property is violence, so really it’s just self-defense.
“When a business is paying $90 million to get out of town, alarm bells should be ringing.”
The most incredible part of that story is that Pinterest has $90 million.
I was amazed they had “offices”.
You’re not married, are you?
I laffed. Pinterest j’adore.
My wife does too, and she’s not even a super girly girl.
Pinterest isn’t really social. Like, at all. I always say girls use it to look at pretty pictures and boys use it to post their preps, guns, and FUCK YEAH ‘MURKA memes.
Ha! My wife doesn’t do Pinterest, but I definitely noticed it’s gender imbalance a long time ago.
Good baseball list and you still managed to miss a HoFer. Eddie Plank was born 145 years ago today.
Good morning, Sloopy!
And good morning to the rest of you. Welcome to another week of insantity!
Speaking of insanity, did I read it wrong or did the fucking StarTribune article actually use the word ‘rioters’ in the first sentence?!?
Amazing. Just like the fucking mayor of Minneapolis giving the NAACP a written waiver back during the curfew. Or that Minneapolis has long had a law on the books outlawing steel security shutters because the give the impression that the area is dangerous! Can you even believe it?
Bah, I feel really sorry for the property owners. They are right and truly fucked. Which means that we are all right and truly fucked eventually. I wonder where these geniuses think the money is gonna come from…
Here’s some more from the owner of a formerly terrific bar:
Owner of Brit’s Pub says downtown Minneapolis no longer safe for customers
No shit.
I find that song strangely soothing, though. What a great band. Thanks, too, for not selecting Gina’s band. I’m not sure I could take that this morning.
Well, good luck out there, peeps. Keep your powder dry and your beaks wet!
Word is out, the protests are now riots, caused by right wingers and Trump supporters of course. Amazing how the media all turn on a dime. It’s almost like they coordinate.
Yup. They have gone full Gasslight on the american people. Not that that is anything surprising. They have done the same thing since trump was elected.
Shadow Gate?
The Swamp is lovely, dark and deep
But I have lies to sell to sheep
And commies to recruit before I sleep
And businesses to burn before I sleep
That’s Mostly Peaceful Rioters, sir.
I used to live in Pittsburgh and Cleveland before shale. Those were both on the brink of being failed cities. When I moved to MN a decade ago, it was refreshing to see how much less bullshit the city government was imposing (bullshit doesn’t mean all regulation and laws, but particularly dysfunctional laws. See Drew Cary’s How to Save Cleveland video series from ReasonTV).
That’s all changed in the last couple years. We are well and truly on our way to turning into Pittsburgh or Cleveland.
Just wear the damn swastika, to show you’re one of us
As researchers race to develop a vaccine to get control of the virus that has infected more than 5.9 million people and killed 183,066 in the US, health experts and officials continue to say preventative measures, such as wearing a mask, practicing social distancing and avoiding crowds can keep infections low and economies open in the interim. But as the pandemic drags on, experts worry that the public has become fatigued or complacent in those measures.
“Right now, we gain freedom through wearing our masks and socially distancing,” Birx said.
She urged vigilance, noting that crowds gathered at concert venues can spread the virus, but so too can people gathered in a backyard.
“We know we can’t always be perfect. We know that we’ll put this message out about private gatherings and something will happen and you’ll realize you have been in a situation, you’ve been around people, you didn’t have your mask on,” Birx said. “That is the time to make sure you’re protecting others in your household and around you by wearing a mask when you’re around them, even if they’re family.”
You know what happens to unbelievers, don’t you?
“Right now, we gain freedom through wearing our masks and socially distancing,” Birx said.
Fuck you, you horrible person.
Translation: Everything else I just said is complete and utter bullshit – we are not going to “stop the virus” unless everyone is enclosed in a perfect hermetically-sealed bubble.
I can’t believe she said that. Fucken cunt.
They’re pushing this.
They’re leading us off a cliff.
By not wearing the masks is FREEDOM.
This is Orwellian language right there.
And people gobble this up. That’s what’s so depressing.
This is an indefinite action that truly will change people. It’s diabolical and NOT rooted in science.
And by the way, Sweden obliterates these claims she made.
“Right now, we gain freedom through wearing our masks and socially distancing,”
Oh, oh, I can do that too!
This week we become royalty by accepting Godzilla as our transcendent employer and fervent friend.
Done and done! Although, to be fair, America already appropriated Godzilla back in the 1970s – https://youtu.be/oTItRfN-LO8
The kid is probably right and the chief sounds like a fairy.
Pressure mounts on Barr DOJ to identify funders, organizers of violent riots
No shit. Get your fat ass in gear.
Process is simple. Arrest rioters, charge with crimes. Most will be useless pawns, but some will know someone up the chain and will flip them for a reduced sentence. Work up the chain.
I am pretty sure they already know this from doing it to the mob.
Fuck man, they do it to organizations that don’t actually exist anywhere but the fever dreams of prosecutors and the on-the-spot made up stories of the people they overcharge. Doing it to a real organization would be a piece of cake.
I can’t believe this hasn’t been done yet.
Barr is an inside man. He’s not going to investigate this because he’s going to realize that it was the DOJ that did this all along.
Did you guys hear about this story when it first happened back in June? I didn’t. Some nut, possibly libertarian, definitely Boogaloo, randomly killed a few cops in SF. I guess there has been some right wing violence too.
link
I laughed.
I know a fellow Marine will appreciate this – when we were deployed to Karshi-Khanabad airfield in Uzbekistan back in 2003-04, it was an Air Force-run base. Every day, to get to and from work at the radar site, we had to drive out past the flight line. At that time, there were AC-130s based out of K2 to fly missions over Afghanistan (which was supposed to be a secret), and so there were USAF security guys posted at the taxiway entrance. I never saw them ever get out of their Humvee. Frequently, we’d see them sleeping in their vehicle at night. So one time we took a bar of soap and wrote “SHHHHH WE’RE SLEEPING” on the hood with it. It was invisible then, but when it started drizzling as it often did at K2 in the early spring, the letters bubbled up and became obvious.
That just made my day. Thank you for sharing the shenanigans.
…”sleeping in their vehicle at night”…
You can bet that they brag to the younger airmen they are leading about these harsh conditions they had to endure back in the day.
“We didn’t even get to go back to our quarters, we had to sleep in a humvee.”
“I went 18 hours without a shower and my iPhone lost power before we were relieved”
When I was in the Army National Guard we had an AT down at Fort Dix / Lakehurst Naval Air Station (they are connected). After a week in the woods at Dix, we moved over to a barracks in Lakehurst affectionately known as “the Crack House”. Wires hanging through missing ceiling tiles, etc. But it was kind of air conditioned, no bugs, and the showers worked so we were happy.
One day an Air Force Colonel and Sgt. Major walk through there looking around. Their unit was supposed to be using those barracks but they didn’t look pleased. Next day trucks with giant tents, generators, and air conditioners are setting up in a field. They set up their own Taj Mahal instead living in the old Navy barracks.
In fairness, Ravens do get extra training being aircrew. That and four months security forces training at Camp Bullis just to get the stupid hat, probably does leave him a few steps above the average street cop.
Notice how he managed not to shoot anyone else besides cops.
Ya, I remember it. One thing that that stuck out to me is the dude was active duty AF. That and the claims that the “Boogaloo” movement is portrayed as some large organized group and not a bunch of knuckle heads joking about a meme.
Spontaneous somthingorother !
The “homemade machine gun with a silencer” probably isn’t, either.
Yeah I did*, and its referenced quite a bit in Everytown’s complaint about 80% lowers.
*protip – get your news from a variety of sources, especially those on the other side of the isle…
Saudi crown prince Mohammed bin Salman Who is certainly not SPACE SMITH.
Arrest rioters, charge with crimes.
See who bails them out.
Kamala will.
Not after they have served their purpose. At that point they will be nothing but some random felons nobody remembers.
Confessions of a voter fraud: I was a master at fixing mail-in ballots
Lies! Orange man disinformation….
These are the same people that say without any sense of irony that every vote should be counted while making sure that there is no way to verify the vote is from someone that should be voting and reflects their vote choices.
I’d get mad, but the only question in my mind was how they did it.
Election day should be a holiday, absentee voting should be done in-person at a precinct if the person is still in US, or at an embassy or consulate if the person is overseas.
Identification should be required, and changes of address should result in a provisional ballot until the address change is validated.
Wow.
STRAIGHT TALK ABOUT COVID-19
CEO of Graco throws down the gauntlet.
Fucking finally, a dissenting voice from a big company. The video is outstanding.
Nice.
I don’t care to do business with Graco because they’re indifferent at best to small businesses like mine, but they get brownie points for that.
That was good.
Also, Graco changed the marketing of their sprayers once the insanity started. (AFAIK) We have several different models of these at work. Smart company, change with the market even when the market is doing stupid ass changes.
Gone
Yeah, a Youtuber tried to copy it and upload it to Youtube, and now it’s gone, too.
The censorship is amazing.
The horoscope was right on about my performance in the pits yesterday. I wound up bleeding from both hands, and not sure what happened. The shooting thumb had its nail shattered, and there is a clear slide-bite wound on my… support thumb? But of course I only noticed them afterward when cleaning the mud off the dropped magazines and was wondering what all this red stuff was on them.
Even so, it’s looking like I can do fairly well on stages that require strategery, I wound up 3rd/17 on that one.
Also for UnCiv and anyone else who might be interested: SSRG is allowing nonmembers back in and they are doing Steel Challenge again on Sunday. You can register on Practiscore.
Mask policy?
I haven’t seen a mask there in weeks. You should probably have on in the bag though. Margaret gives a lecture about how we’re not supposed to share pasters once we’ve picked up a strip of them, but that obviously doesn’t apply in Steel Challenge. People are setting their range bags apart from each other. Payment is done through Practiscore, so there’s no contact (and no reason to stock up on $1s yay!)
They did remove the pit we were using and used the dirt to make four (4) new ones. There’s a road just past the shotgun field that leads to them. Drainage is surprisingly good — two of them had zero standing water just a 12 hours after they got dumped on. Apparently two of the guys in the club work for road paving companies and know wtf they are doing.
While the online prepayment is a plus, I then think “But this is financial information being given to the wonky practiscore site.”
I really need to get out of the house, so I’ll have to remind myself to attend.
“St. Paul properties delay rebuilding”
They might want to wait until after the riots related to the verdict subside because, rightly or wrongly, he’s not going to get murder one.
Not the cops and not the Kenosha Kid. I doubt any of them will be convicted of any felony.
Even better, don’t rebuild at all. Move somewhere else and open your business back up. Because this crazy ass shit ain’t ending any time soon. The rioters have realized they’re not likely to be held responsible. Until they are, they’ll continue using it as a cudgel to get their way.
It’s like letting your dog or cat walk around on the dinner table while you’re eating. As long as you keep coaxing them down to the floor by offering them scraps held low, they’ll keep jumping back up.
I believe that’s going to be the case Sloop. History shows most of these businesses will not come back or do so elsewhere. And then they will be labeled racist for wanting to avoid a repeat since they don’t believe the political class will hold up their side of the agreement. At a minimum this should dissuade a large amount of wokesters from thinking the promises from the credentialed inept elite political class can be trusted.
Anyone have the link to the “what kind of libertarian are you” quiz? I would like to forward it on.
I am dismayed as to how many of us got “Glibertarian.” Perhaps we are a hive mind? Unless of course the answers were rigged so that recognizing the in-jokes gave a disproportionate shove in that direction?
I took that quiz. It said I’m the kind of libertarian that doesn’t enact his labor for someone else by providing links they can find on their own.
I’d love to help, but the results are what they are.
https://uquiz.com/5hJeU5
^^^ This is the Quiz, please do share it. It is true and accurate.
Also, yes if you get the in-jokes there is a bit of an edge towards getting libertarian rather than something else
I got the in jokes, but I was actually trying to pick a best-fit answer instead of going for the joke, which I guess is why I didn’t get glibertarian.
Glibertarian here
Now where’s my hairshirt?
One True, bitches. Which I believe is a pejorative.
Pejorative? You’ve been endowed with immense knowledge. With great knowledge comes great respect.
I got one true, which is funny, because I’m not…
#metoo Which is odd, what with me only wanting a good king with some knowledge of geometry, theology, and a rich inner life.
Prepare for a month of “but long haulers” from our esteemed media and gov officials. It’s going to be tough to keep this going when people see fans in the stands in football stadiums.
They’re already starting here:
COVID fatigue: Why you may be feeling down as we approach fall.
Go ahead, read it. Tell me what you think of “Radical acceptance.”
“Give in and don’t question us!”
Gaslighting shitbags.
The reason that I’m miserable is because you, and people like you, are making me miserable.
“Radical acceptance.”
The feeling that you are getting more than just the tip?
Polls before principles
https://www.foxnews.com/media/pollster-biden-denounces-kenosha-violence
They’ve screwed the pooch on this one. Minnesota is absolutely in play now. If Two-Scoops wins here, it’s over.
I think you are right. I don’t see any way that Biden can count to 538 without Minnesoda. (yeah yeah, Biden needs to take off his socks to count to 20, I know).
And if the shitty robocalls are any indication, Team Blue and Team Red both know it.
Only 90-odd days after the violence started in Portland. That one’s got his finger on the pulse of America, he does.
All it says to me is that the DNC is just fine with the riots, looting, and arson so long as they think they can get away with it politically.
Yup. I’ve noticed how one of the more absurd talking point that have developed now is that Trump has caused all the riots by intervening to stop peaceful protests.
And i’ve seen some people straight up argue that the BLM rioters are actually secret trump supporters
I mean, they may not know it or realize it, but they certainly aren’t hurting him…
They’re flailing. Go on Twitter and you can see lefties shrieking multiple things – there are no riots! It’s all peaceful protests! OK, there are riots but they aren’t a big deal! OK, they’re bad, but they’re caused by right wing instigators! It’s all Trump’s fault!
That lying is driving me batshit insane because PEOPLE ARE BELIEVING THIS.
Anyone who actually believes that, deserves the gulag.
Another one I’ve seen is the claim that the pictures aren’t actually of Kenosha but are really of abroad, and how stupid do the Rethuglikkkans think we are?
Joe Biden could kill and eat a baby on live tv and there’d still be idiots on Twitter making some sort of excuse.
My wife used to say Obama could kills kittens on the (w)hite House lawn and they would blame it on Bush.
I’ve seen that one too.
A (formerly) conservative friend has gone full TDS and some family members are fully on the prog train. I really really really HATE that people I love and respect are going off the rails like this. It’s PAINFUL. I scroll past and try not to look.
People that become invested in these political arguments are willing to believe any and all bullshit that keeps them from heaving to do any sort of soul searching that would result in them having to admit they were played and that they are not as smart as they want to pretend they are. Having to admit that your decisions are driven by emotion, and then group think of all reasons, while you have convinced yourself it is based on logic & facts, is real damaging for people with fragile egos and a need to belong.
Remember that you are dealing with people with cult like fanaticism, and their illogical and desperate need to fabricate excuses to redeem their idiotic beliefs in the face of proof and logic becomes evident. Admitting they were played and belief stupid shit would cause them mental health issues. So they double down on the crazy. All their friends are doing the same, after all…
Yep. And notice that yesterday the news went from there are no riots they are peaceful protests to these are Trumps violent riots and his fault in one news cycle.
Protests for me, riots for thee. I’m starting to believe Trump will win now. Enough lefties have been crushed to just walk away, or just not vote.
They’re explicitly saying this!!! How many prominent media types are yoin seeing say something thing “This has got to stop – it only helps Trump! Wake up people!” Almost no one just says “Hey, mobs that intimidate and beat people and burn down innocent people’s businessed are absolutely wrong regardless of politics.”
They’re by and large the same people who think the biggest threat to their own lives is one of their neighbors going to a Trump rally and then giving them COVID in the supermarket.
*cue Kamala clip where she gleefully says they won’t stop*
hmmm, well, that cat is long out of that bag, so good luck with the new spin
Speaking of the wicked witch, did anyone else see the ode to Chadwick last night where they gave “Commolla“ free teevee time? Blah blah blah.. social justice!
Funny that he does this the same week his campaign starts TV ads with an empty U of Michigan football stadium saying Trump shut it down AND the same weekend that the auto race in Florida had plenty of spectators in attendance.. Everybody pretty much knows it is Dem mayors and governors shutting things down this late in the game.
Another plague victim
An Oregon man was killed by a charging elk while archery hunting on Sunday after the animal charged and gored him in the neck with its antlers, according to authorities.
Mark David, 66, from Hillsboro was hunting on private property in Tillamook on Saturday when he wounded a 5X5 bull elk but was unable to locate it before dark, Oregon State Police said.
David and the landowner attempted to search for the wounded bull the next day before finding it around 9:15 a.m. He then attempted to kill it with his bow, when the elk charged, police said.
He should have been wearing his mask.
The situation is spinning out of control
Citing criticism of government agencies and increasing public distrust of vaccines, several prominent physicians and experts are calling for the creation of an independent commission to review data from coronavirus vaccine trials before a vaccine is allowed on the market.
The US Food and Drug Administration regulates vaccines, and its OK is all that’s needed to put one on the market. The physicians fear, however, that after several government blunders during the pandemic, a layer of review independent from the government is needed to give Americans confidence that the shot is safe and effective.
A CNN poll this month shows that 40% of Americans do not want to get a coronavirus vaccine when it becomes available, even if it’s free and easy to access. Such a low uptake of the vaccine could hinder the ability to get the virus under control and return to normalcy.
Dr. Kathryn Stephenson, an assistant professor at Harvard Medical School, said she thought of the idea of an independent panel to increase trust in the vaccine after several colleagues told her they did not want to get a coronavirus vaccine when it becomes available.
“I’m hearing this from my peers, from doctors and nurses. They’re not anti-vaxxers. They’re pro vaccine. They vaccinated their own children. But they are skeptical about this vaccine,” said Stephenson, director of the clinical trials unit at the Center for Virology and Vaccine Research at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center.
Huh. You have been wrong nonstop, and now you profess surprise when people stop listening to you.
Maybe you should re-examine the evidence.
I think anyone who isn’t a little skeptical about the vaccine isn’t thinking about it much.
*spit-take*
Several?
“That’s putting it mildly, 007.”
By several they must mean the whole thing was such a shitshow that we now have no doubt that our credential elite ruling class is not just inept, but downright evil. At least this also torpedoes any and all credibility of their other hobby horse: climate change…
If the COVID models were that bad and the affair that mismanaged, can anyone doubt this is replicated in the AGW cult’s movement?
Cultural Suicide Is Painless VDH
….It brings on many changes
true Dark Ages are awful rare in history
Dr. Joseph Tucker, an infectious disease specialist at the University of North Carolina, saw Stephenson’s August 22 tweet and reached out to her suggesting that they look at an independent panel in the UK that makes recommendations to the government on Covid-19, called The Independent SAGE.
He said he already knows he would want a US independent panel to look different. The British committee is made up of experts, but Tucker envisions having coronavirus survivors, as well as trusted community and religious leaders on any US panel, as well as vaccine experts.
“I want to have a body that’s really trusted. What if members were like, say, Oprah? People who are reasonable and have large followings in the US and are not political and are widely recognized as thoughtful,” Tucker said.
SCIENCE, ladies and germs.
I’ve really, really grown to despise the word “community”.
“What if members were like, say, Oprah? ”
Fucking assholes think MARKETING is the problem? The idea that we need more Goebbels is frightening.
Why would I trust a narcissistic, mendacious, lying, racist like Oprah who asserts that the system in this country is stacked against people with her immutable characteristics while being a self-made billionaire as a result of that system?
I’m trying to ignore the things I don;t like about Oprah and focus on the things she obviously does well.
She markets insignificant crap very well. And that’s about it.
SCIENCE, ladies and germs.- is a virus a germ?
I do not disagree with how you see the timeline. The antifa guy who killed the MAGA guy had previously been arrested at a protest with an illegal weapon, and was quickly released with no charges. To a majority of people that looks pretty bad.
Science?
Kid’s soccer starts this week. The mask policy is this:
• Coaches must be masked
• Players actively participating in a training session will not be required to mask,
• Players while on the field receiving instructions for a drill should be adequately spaced to promote distancing since they are not masked.
• Players must be masked arriving and exiting the training field after a session
• Players on the bench waiting to enter a game will be required to mask until subbed in.
• Players exiting a game to the bench area will need to re-mask while on the sideline.
Unless everyone arrives at the same time, I don’t get why you would need a mask except for when you are breathing all over each other on the field.
My daughter’s club (affiliated with Real Salt Lake) has held practices all summer with similar rules…for parents.
Its probably rules set by the club’s lawyers more than anything else. Anybody thats been around children are acutely aware of a certain group of hysterical parents.
a certain group of hysterical parents.
Have the parents who hysterically screeched about a conspiracy by the coaches to keep their kid down easily transitioned to screeching about how “we’re all gonna die!” since COVID? Because I bet it’s the same group of parents.
Parents here are currently not allowed on the field by the club.
I guess that rule is not in my list above, but we are also not allowed on the field for practice. Games yes, practice no.
We get one “spectator” per player. Which at least leaves Saturday open for every else.
Unless everyone arrives at the same time, I don’t get why you would need a mask except for when you are breathing all over each other on the field.
And even then you won’t need one unless you’re a giant pussy that doesn’t understand science or statistics.
I have been doing drop-in all summer. Besides the temperature check and stating I am feel okay, it feels pretty normal and no reports of anyone getting sick.
Kid’s soccer starts this week – he is going to grow up into one o’ dem effete Europeans
Show him this training material it helps
https://twitter.com/_HelenDale/status/1300169870898802693
Yeah, they tried starting up little league again over the summer with similar rules. IIRC, the coaches had to wear masks, the kids were supposed to wear masks when arriving and leaving but they were optional on the field, parents were asked to just drop the kids off at practice and not hang around, and the dugouts were closed and there were ribbons on the fence at 6 foot intervals to mark where the players could put their bags.
Then about two weeks in we got news that someone who may have been at the main ballpark at some point had been diagnosed with the covid, so they shut it all down again (including the teams that never use that ballpark).
Good morning Sloopy, everybody else.
Today the skies over Kansas City look like Zuul is about to descend. I love days like this. It is both rainy and Monday, and Karen Carpenter, though her voice was the stuff of angels, was wrong about this particular topic.
Speaking of singers, someone tweeted on the Adele thing, something like “Yet again American blacks are screaming cultural appropriation on behalf of Caribbean peoples.” I take it the Caribbean peoples aren’t too happy that Americans are manufacturing outrage on their behalf all the time. On the other hand, AAs have a point. Bantu knots do not look good on her and cornrows did not look good on Bo Derek. At least Gwen Stefani’s bindi was cute.
Today the skies over Kansas City – Kansas or Missouri ?
The same sky covers both the good and the evil.
That’s nice, but he was asking about Kansas City.
KC Missouri = good
KC Kansas = evil
Hey now thems fighting words.
Please, dude, you live in Johnson County. You know you don’t want to claim KCK either.
Dealing in the Dot, yo!
Can confirm
Thank you for asking. Both. The whole metro is having thunderstorms.
LJW is in Kansas. I, Libertesian, and Trigger Hippie live in Missouri.
(If I missed any area glibs, I apologize.)
What is the iconic food of the place? Sugar I assume
Vinegar.
I wish. Our BBQ sauce tends toward ubersweet except for Bryants and Gates. If I’ve missed a vinegary BBQ sauce that originated here, I’ll go get some immediately.
I was actually just snarking Pie with the least sugary flavor profile that came to mind. I haven’t even been to the area, let alone eaten the food.
Slaps and Q39 make decent vinegar based sauces. You can order Slaps’ sauce online, not sure about Q39.
Mr. Mojeaux and I have discussed trying Q39 but haven’t as yet. Our anniversary is coming up so maybe then.
Don’t judge me–I haven’t heard of Slaps.
https://slapsbbqkc.com/
A shit-shack in the hood,….and it’s probably one of the ten best bbq joints in the city….don’t tell anyone, our little secret.
Hey, that’s in Go Chicken Go’s neighborhood. I <3 Go Chicken Go. Only place in town to get gizzards. (Although I usually go to the one by UMKC.)
I loved, GCG for many years until one day I got food poisoning from eating there. I still go there once a year or so but I’m now reflexively wary of it. I agree about their gizzards. And I generally don’t like gizzards.
I am not a fan of Jousting Pigs. Mr. Mojeaux liked it but was not bowled over enough to make another trip.
The Landing (in Liberty) has decent ribs, shockingly enough for a pub. We got their Father’s Day special and were very pleasantly surprised.
Dickey’s is trash.
I am spoiled for kielbasa after that little grocery down by the Truman Road viaduct (Truman and I-435) where I’ve been getting it for 30 years (Peter May’s House of Kielbasa, 1654 Bristol Ave). No, Jack Stack and Smokehouse (Gladstone) don’t have kielbasa that good and they never will.
Mr. Mojeaux doesn’t like vinegary sauces or I’d go down to Slap’s right now and get some.
He has had Oklahoma Joe’s, but I haven’t. IIRC, that’s his favorite, with Jack Stack second.
The Landing?! No shit? Huh.
Go get some Slaps, Mo. The regular sauce is more the classic kc style but you can get the vinegar based for yourself.
For myself LC’s is still king.
And yeah, I don’t even consider Dickie’s to be bbq at all.
Yep, The Landing. They had a good deal so we thought, “Why the hell not.” Even if it was meh, it was good for the price.
BBQ
I thought BBQ was the iconic food of North Carolina
The number of states claiming BBQ is equal to the number of different types of BBQ, though all will also say there is only one type and the rest are wrong.
Sort of like libertarians.
Libertarians would never factionalize and then fight over it.
It is.
And it is the iconic food of Memphis.
And it is the iconic food of Kansas City.
And all three of those are different things.
Carolinians claim they have good BBQ but it’s awful. Texas and Kansas City are the best places for BBQ.
I grew up in KCMO and moved to NC in 2009. The people here have proclaimed their vinegar meat with false bravado for so long that they’ve successfully gaslighted themselves.
BBQ is pork*, so they are right out. I vote Memphis over the Carolinas, but there is good bbq here too.
*or mutton, in which case the correct location is Owensboro, KY. Personally, not a fan.
I will note that Lewis BBQ in Charleston does a tremendous brisket that makes me reconsider my blanket declaration on pork.
open your flavor horizons. I have yet to meet a BBQ meat that wasn’t tasty.
BBQ lizards…
I suspect someone has done it.
BBQ Alligator is definately a thing.
It’s the iconic food of a lot of places. There are arguments over which is the best ‘style.’ I like them all because it’s f-ing BBQ.
Meat is murder
What’s your point?
*picks chicken out of teeth.*
So what are the odds of it burning down in the next 5 years?
We just lost power down south how’s it in your are?
Still good, but I don’t expect it to last. For some reason lately we’ve been having brown- and black-outs randomly on clear days. I doubt we’ll get out of a storm without power going out.
Your power come from commiefornia?
They’ve been working on installing new utilities around my place, so I think that’s it.
When do black ladies stop straightening their hair? Or dyeing it red? Or bleaching it blonde?
and cornrows
diddo not look good on Bo Derek white womenAnd good morning.
I’ll be honest, for about 2 years, i thought Adele was black.
Everybody thinks Bobby Caldwell is black.
Right wing vigilantism is the problem
“It’s the logical end of a years’ long path that we’ve been on of normalizing the idea that vigilante justice is not just justifiable but is necessary,” said Howard Graves, a senior research analyst at the Southern Poverty Law Center, which studies hate groups. “It’s not an accident that this resulted in death — that is what’s going to happen based on what these groups envision themselves doing.”
Shared among the variety of groups, which are mainly comprised of White men, is often a disdain for the Black Lives Matter movement and a misplaced emphasis on its ties to radical left-wing violence, though some have more explicit, extreme and at times racist ideologies, said Alex Friedfeld, an investigative researcher at the Anti-Defamation League’s Center on Extremism who monitors the groups’ activity online.
These groups spring up out of nowhere, based on nothing. Nothing but racism and hate.
The media is, indeed, the enemy.
The SPLC is to hate groups what the JBS was to communists. How any media outlet with an ounce of honesty could quote them is… oh, wait, CNN? Never mind.
“This. Is CNN.”
Every time i think CNN can’t get to be more of a joke, they go and outdo themseleves.
BLM is such a wide-scale motte-and-bailey gaslight operation that I can’t quite believe anyone is supposed to take it seriously anymore.
This post is ending, but scroll on down and dream a little dream.

What? They finally get something right and now you want to inflict violence on them? Feminism has already made them miserable, don’t kick an old nag when she’s down.
Heads up to our middle-aged and above glibs.
It just occurred to me that my buddy who died on Friday had been complaining of heartburn/indigestion for the previous couple of days. It was a new thing for him.
I didn’t think about it at the time, but I should have told him to go get an EKG at an urgent care. A fifty dollar exam could have saved his life.
My dad had a heart attack in the 80’s. He was 45. The only symptom he had was heartburn. Luckily mom was a nurse and told him to come in to the hospital just in case, and he ended up with a few bypasses. He just turned 80 and is still going strong.
Also, when he had his heart attack, he was smoking a cigarette. (Back then they let you smoke at work). That was the last one he ever smoked.
Agreed.
Heartburn/acid reflux is absolutely not a natural condition. If you have it frequently, you need to fix things, stat.
*Thinks about my seemingly never ending battles with heartburn*
You’re spooking me out, man. Stop that.
Something in your diet is fucking with your system. How do you normally eat?
Horribly. Too much processed everything, not enough fiber, too much beer, too many cigarettes, I shy away from acid stuff now nut that only helps so much.
Can you cook?
Throw away every oil that doesn’t say olive, coconut or avocado Cook in those and butter. Grill steaks a lot. Stop eating processed anything. Meat, fish and eggs should take good care of you.
I’m serious. We need you here, dude.
…too much beer…
Can’t be true. There is still some left! 😉
Refer to avatar.
Oh, I spend far too much time single to not learned how to cook. However, I haven’t cooked a lot that recently because I’ve been doing a great deal of my food shopping at a bar and and convenience store over the last few months. They don’t require masks and I’m avoiding wearing a mask whenever possible but, all the local grocery stores require them right now. So I’m eating garbage for the most part.
I feel like shit all the time. Huzzah!
Fuck it.
Mask up, sack up and hit the grocery store. Try eating 80% of your meals at home for the next two weeks. If you don’t feel 100% better, Sean and I will give up steak for two weeks*.
*this is a lie
*eyes tater tot suspiciously, pops in mouth anyway*
I know expensive smart watches aren’t very popular with the older age group, but I think it’s one expense that could be valuable for someone with heart conditions.
My cousin felt like he had heartburn for days and days until finally his wife shamed him enough to go to the doctor. Yep, he was having a heart attack. They fixed him up no problem. Sorry about your buddy Scruff, that sucks.
Scruff, again, I’m sorry about your pal.
Thing about heart attacks is that you hear “my left arm hurts” and you think that’s the only symptom, so you go when your chest and left arm hurt at the same time.
It’s not so easy for women because the symptoms can mimic just about everything but. Back pain? Nausea? Headache? Dizziness? Shortness of breath? Fat? Any one of those will get you on an EKG pronto if you’re a 50ish female, never mind more than one at a time. The last 2 times I’ve been to the ER, they didn’t even triage before they got me on an EKG. (Neither were heart attacks.)
But, regardless that there is nothing wrong with me, I take family history into account and I go to the cardiologist every year like clockwork.
Sorry, Scruff.
Condolences, SN. ☹️
Is there a mobile browser that supports any of Trashy’s wonderful Glibcentric extensions?
Firefox.
Unless you are running iOS.
Well, yes, but that is because Apple requires all internet browsers on the IPhone to use the safari interface. In short Safari is the only browser on IOS.
True. Does not work on iOS. Then again, nothing works on my iPad anymore because it’s out of date. I am SO PISSED OFF. The machine works perfectly well, but Apple won’t update it so the app developers don’t support apps. I can’t update anything, can’t have anything new. AAARRRRRGGGGHHHHH
It’s not just an Apple thing.
Android devices get abandoned regularly as well.
Also, are any of our Texas cohort near a wee town called Copperas Cove?
Don’t answer its a trap
My last duty station was Ft. Hood. While Im clearly not there now, I remember it well.
This is Lucille Bogan (1897-1948), an American blues singer. Along with Bessie Smith and Ma Rainey, Bogan was one of the ‘big three’ women of early blues music. She recorded some of the most sexually explicit songs of that era (and many others).

Decent tweeting:
This. I dgaf what private, consensual relationships she had in her past, just for the sake of cheap shot moralizing. She’s a monster, but not for making an older man happy.
This is the closest that the Strib has ever come to questioning the wisdom of our betters. Now, the question is, did a plucky young intern with a closet full of bow ties and Freedom to Choose hidden under his bed slip it in as a prank, or is it just a coincidence and none of the editors have the intellectual diversity to pick up on this thread?
I’mma guess option 2
“That is a symbol of capitalism run amok.”
Somebody is willing to take money to go into a destroyed and dangerous area to rebuild after the government failed to do its job and that, to you, is a symbol of “capitalism run amok”?
Not only that, but the Government is requiring you purchase a destruction permit before you can buldoze, because they didn’t do anything to save your building? That sounds like Government run rampant.
I’mma guess option 2
That, plus the elitism of journalists. How dare those workers take (costly) precautions! They’re a bunch of blue collar mouthbreathers who probably voted for Trump anyway. Dying in their 50s from disease and cancer caused by particle inhalation from handling burnt debris is what they deserve.
Weeeeeeee!
I always dreamed of doing that when I was a kid, now I’m glad I never got the chance.
I read that story last night, and it said the kid went several feet into the air. Several???
Not above the parent’s head.
That would’ve scared me shitless.
I know, right? It looks like she got more air than the magic portajohn in your avatar.
Did someone say magic portajohn?
I’ve done that, but without the terlet box, so I could see all around while I was up in the air. Pretty cool way to spend 10 seconds or however long it was.
I’ve decided to call it the TURDIS.
Where’s Yusef?
It happened to me once
3 year old girls are having a fun week, between that and getting carried out to sea on a unicorn floaty in Greece.
Sounds like a superhero team origin story setup.

We just need one more.
There have been multiple incidents with bouncy castles going airborn with kids inside. Choose one of those and you have your team. Now get writing, I expect the first episode by next Thursday!
Better video.
I felt my stomach doing somersaults just watching that.
Love the fact everyone is more interested in videoing the thing….
Great minds, etc.
Um, all the dudes filming it instead of helping to catch her…
Give the kid credit. She’s got a hell of a grip.
Her poor future husband.
That’s fucking rad! But just to be safe we should ban kites.

Apparently the suspected Portland shooter was recently arrested for possessing a loaded gun in a public place, resisting arrest and interfering with police, however the charges were dropped. So much for common sense gun control.
I’m playing devils advocate because principles, but isn’t pretty much every perp charged with “resisting arrest” by default?
Pretty much, but I was pointing to the gun charge.

Chriss Cillizza is out of touch.
First response: “These are white nationalists fomenting violence for Trump.”
I must confess to being somewhat surprised as to how quickly the average leftist has accepted this explanation.
Its just another manifestation of: “I’m good, therefore everything i agree with is good, and everything that is bad must be done by people i disagree with”
It’s Heisenberg’s rioter. On the street throwing molotovs, they’re all white supremacists. In the arraignment hearings, they turn out to have been peaceful BLM protestors all along.
You know who else is out of touch?
Christ this is so lame: I have no idea if my kids should play sports right now
As with everything else COVID-19, there’s been no national mandate on youth sports, because the president is a lazy s–t-for-brains. And even the mythical Dr. Fauci has said there can’t be a blanket policy for sports. So, once again, it’s been left to us parents, and to the occasional Big Ten official, to make decisions that we desperately need government officials to make for us, and to make correctly. You know how much brainpower I expend just trying to figure out what to f–king eat for dinner? I can’t accommodate any more of this decision-making. Our idiot president has burdened us with president-level crisis management duties, in which most of us have no training. So now my wife and I are left to decide if it’s worth the risk to let our kids back out onto a soccer or football field.
I hate people
That is about as much as i can say. I’m working on being more kind in heart, but i will admit that i can’t muster anything but utter contempt for people who are abdicating any form of decision making as “The governments job”.
This person should be put into an insane asylum or prison and never allowed to vote for anything ever.
LOL
Maybe this person is some form of performance art.
Turns out witches do float after all!
Drew Magery used to be kind of a fun asshole.
Yes. Way back when he was a sports blogger, he was pretty damned funny. He started getting into politics and…..ugh.
You know how much brainpower I expend just trying to figure out what to f–king eat for dinner? I can’t accommodate any more of this decision-making
…and you think the president is a lazy shit for brains?
This person should be put into an insane asylum or prison and never allowed to vote for anything ever. I’m passed having a discussion with these types this position is fine to have back in april or march but it’s fucking september.
I can’t accommodate any more of this decision-making.
It isn’t only the kind that want to tell other people what to do, but this contingent that want to be told what to do. We are a dying breed.
Maybe the dude should try what a Central European power did some years ago: place people into camps, assign them work, give them meals, decide what recreation they needed, put up some kind of fence to ensure their continued safety, and free funerals when necessary.
Years ago SFGate had a columnist called Mark Morford, the guy who called Obama a lightbringer. He was awful. Magary appears to be his replacement.
I intend to pack my heat when I go to SD. First time flying w/firearm. What do I need to know other than having it in a locked container and unloaded? Should I have the locked container packed in my bag, or should I carry it separately until check-in so they can verify it’s locked? AA says I can only bring 11 rounds with me. How would they know if it’s in a locked box?
Any nitty gritty details of flying with gun is appreciated.
Never flown with a gun, but I hope you don’t have a stop in New York. They have a history of targeting people flying with guns.
CLT & DFW are my layovers. Only concern, really, is getting it checked in at DCA
I wouldn’t bring it at all, the Cops will snatch it up, and maybe you too, not worth it IMO
I’m traveling alone through some remote areas. I’m not super comfortable NOT bringing it.
You should be okay if you do what I said below. Keep it in your checked baggage until you arrive at the counter, Then proceed to open your baggage enough to show the ticketing agents the locked hard plastic case. If they demand you do anything more than that such as taking it out, or opening it up to verify the contents, and you feel such a request is not a gross invasion of your privacy, ask to see a supervisor or the policy that says you must open the packaging, as that is exactly the opposite of TSA rules and regulations. I do not think you’ll have a problem And you shouldn’t have a problem at the other airports either. If they force you to open the container, this is where you will benefit from having the gun broken down and the ammunition in a factory box.
…such a request is** a gross invasion…
And open the bag when/if baggage agent asks you to, not before.
They’ll have you sign a declaration card and place the unloaded firearms card inside of your outer luggage next to or secure to the firearms container. May escort you over to TSA luggage screening, depending on the airport or a TSA agent may come out to confirm something if they need to.
Here’s the TSA rules: https://www.tsa.gov/travel/transporting-firearms-and-ammunition
“You may transport unloaded firearms in a locked hard-sided container as checked baggage only. Declare the firearm and/or ammunition to the airline when checking your bag at the ticket counter. The container must completely secure the firearm from being accessed. Locked cases that can be easily opened are not permitted. Be aware that the container the firearm was in when purchased may not adequately secure the firearm when it is transported in checked baggage.”
Which, upon taking time to re-read your original post, doesn’t really answer your question. Sorry.
11 pounds*
Yep you’re right. Read their web site wrong. I’m only going to bring at most 34 rounds, so that’ll be fine
To further clarify. You should be fine to include it inside your checked bag but you must declare the firearm and ammo, and will have to show them the locked, hard plastic, ideally pressure relieved case so if it’s in you baggage, make it easily accessible. Also, according to AA, you need to keep the ammunition in its original packaging and you can have up to 11lbs. Which for a handgun, should be closer to 200 rounds. You cannot have a loaded magazine. I would recommend breaking down the handgun into the major components and have the ammo in the original 20/50/100 rd box. And if you’re flying through any unfriendly states or cities be careful, but you should otherwise be fine.
Concur. When I would fly for deer hunting after 9/11, I would pull the bolt from the rifle and bring it in my checked bag, along with the ammo.
Strongly recommend you print the TSA rules on gun transport to show the Airline folk and/or TSA at your origination airport (particularly if you are flying out of Dulles or National).
Also, arrive earlier than you normally would. I can usually get to the waiting area in most airports within 45 mins. I would probably do no less than 2.5 hours ahead of flight time to account for possible issues.
I usually get to the airport about 3 hours early on account of being an avgeek
Nice! Me too! Check out gravely point park if you get there super early. It’s right at the end of runway 1, I believe.
Keep your unloaded gun in a locked container in the bag that you’re going to check. Keep rounds separately outside of the locked container in the same box you purchased them. At the check-in they may ask you to open the locked container, so don’t bury it deep in the bag. You will sign a form and it should be placed outside of the locked container, perhaps taped to it. The process is actually easier than it sounds. I’ve flown with a gun on AA, B6 and DL.
The Vicky Osterweil delusion
In Defense of Looting: A Riotous History of Uncivil Action by Vicky Osterweil reviewed
https://spectator.us/defense-looting-vicky-osterweil/
Compared to legends of the field, like Jean-Paul Sartre, she comes up short. Indeed, her writing often verges on self-parody. ‘Riots are violent, extreme, and femme as fuck,’ she informs us. Femme? (As fuck?)
‘As a mode of struggle, riots are marked by many characteristics traditionally defined as feminine: not driven by rational argumentation or “proper” political dialogue, they are instead driven by desire, affect, rage, and pain.’
I don’t know what kind of stone-cold misogynist thinks the irrational is necessarily feminine. That’s a level of sexism that even the outer reaches of the ‘red-pilled’ internet only aspire to achieve. You get the sense that Osterweil was just desperate to squeeze modish gender politics in somewhere.

Who knows. She’s given a couple sorry, not sorry’s but I dunno if they took. Apparently they did.
This was the last pre-tournament round-table on the Tennis Channel (the action starts at noon on ESPN) so naturally they had plenty of time to gasbag about everything except tennis.

“If Trump is reelected we’re looking at 4 more years where nothing fuels violent protests & arson more than the authoritarian POTUS & nothing fuels the far right more than street violence & the fear it stokes. I think a Biden term alters that dangerous cycle by changing incentives”
I just can’t with these types of takes anymore. Far right?
That is the story that it appers the media has landed on and is going with. My guess is that the thought process went like this:
“Oh fucking shit, we refused to talk about the riots, and it let the right blame it all on us!!!”
“Now our Poll numbers are collapsing because they all think the riots are because of us”
“I know, lets just say the riots are caused by white supremacists!”
“Brilliant!”
His specific argument is if Biden gets elected the culture war will be over and the left will start to address it’s bad actors because we’ll return to normalcy or something. Okay chamberlain. If the left wins this cycle they will think that this strategy works and continue to employ it till they lose.
Ah yes, the old I Only Hit You Because You Made Me So Angry defense.
It’s like Obama never happened to these people, except when it’s convenient to remember how “Presidential” and “dreamy” he was.
Relevant at NR…
If the riots are caused by white supremacists, then why the complaints that cops are fighting them with rubber bullets and tear gas? The left should be cheering on the cops, n’est pas?
My TDS-stricken family and friends are discussing how “authoritarian” and “dictatorial” Trump is. I haz a confuze.
And THEN they bitch he didn’t lock down the country.
Well, WHICH IS IT?!
No, I don’t get into political talk online anywhere but here, and that seldom enough.
Trump’s an authoritarian for not sending in the national guard unless asked and not having a national mask mandidate. The dude is not authoritarian at all beyond twitter. It’s embarrassing to even believe that after 4 years he’s totally kneecapped by the bureaucracy and his own party. Friesdorf is holding up the “muslim ban” as evidence of his authoritarianism, he’s an idiot.
I tried to take a Glibs sabbatical in order to Get Crap Done but it was too lonely. I can’t talk about politics to anyone in meat-space.
I hear you.
This may help with Getting Shit Done, though. I have an add-on on my browser (Firefox) called Leechblock that blocks the sites you set it to block for a certain amount of time and it won’t let you to that site. You can always disable it but the point is that the process to disable before the time limit is up is so onerous you won’t do it.
I get lots of stuff done that way, although I am inferring that you mean days’ and weeks’ worth of Getting Shit Done.
Have heard of it.
Sabbatical unsuccessful in the GTD regard. I just can’t quit you fine eccentrics.
He’s the worst authoritarian despotic dictator since Gorbachev.
The new improved Judenrat?
I am getting might annoyed, and this applies to the right as well, with the notion that the President (current or future) has some responsibility for the riots (whether in continuing them or ending them). The riots have nothing to do with the President and a change in President won’t change that fact.
Oh, once Biden is president, you won’t see the media calling him totalitarian when he drives the tanks over the anarchists. Remeber that Bill Clinton was able to burn a house full of women and children and that isn’t the thing people think was scandalous about his Admin.
I have no idea what Biden would or wouldn’t do nor how the media would react. They love him now but once he’s in power (assuming he wins) he’s no longer anti-Trump. The media worked hard to tank on Goldwater but that didn’t stop them from turning on LBJ.
As it stands, today, the national guard already exists and is answerable to the governors. The police forces already exist and are answerable to local governments. Most places where rioting is happening have some nontrivial degree of private firearm ownership. The solutions to the immediate problem of rioting are as available today as they will be on January 21, 2021.
In general the president, any president, has less power than people think he does. We’d be better of if more people realize that, so they would calibrate their expectations and so they wouldn’t get so wound up about elections.
I think the president has some to do with the riots because if a democrat was in charge these groups wouldn’t be getting the level of funding they are now and they’d be ignored and the national guard would be called in. They can’t have Trump get a win at any cost even if it means torching their taxbase and ruining peoples lives.
Again, I think this overstates the role of the President. They don’t like the President, that much is true, but that’s not why this is happening.
I mostly agree with you.
I just can’t with these types of takes anymore. Far right?
Only far right nutjobs believe in private ownership. It’s just a tool of oppression used by white supremacists to keep the black man in his place.
What kind of “place” would a black man have without property rights?
Unlike say, burning down all those black owned small businesses.
I would love it if a whole bunch of those stupid white kids were charged with federal hate crimes.
Cobra Kai on Netflix is awesome, in case anyone was wondering.
I thought it was on YouTube Red? I saw the first season (for free) and kept meaning to get YTR for season 2. Dammit, I don’t have Netflix.
Netflix just bought the rights. I hadn’t even heard of it till I saw it on recommended and had like no expectations going in. It’s wonderful.
It is. I stumbled over the first season a couple of years ago, glommed it, and then dithered about season 2, which I should not have done.
I love a good redemption arc, but at least they didn’t make Johnny TOO good.
That’s part of the reason I like it every character is flawed in some very human way and all the conflicts are nearly all driven by perceived slights and miscommunications. Sort of like real life.
Yep, exactly. Johnny is cringe, but not too cringe. We’ve all been there. IIRC, he was also not quite sure how to go about teaching his students because he knew he was taught badly.
It’s a lot of fun. Doesn’t take itself too seriously.
Yeah, it’s intentionally a little cheesy, but at the same time, one episode in season 2 had me a little choked up.
Ever read a non-fiction book by an author you like, and say to yourself “this is a great book. I’m learning a lot!” until you get to a section that discusses something you have deep knowledge of… and you realize the author doesn’t know what the fuck he’s talking about? Not like “he disagrees with me” but like “Hai guis remember the time that Ronald Regan was elected president in 1945?” wrong?
Its always a bummer.
Anyway, don’t read How Innovation Works by Matt Ridley. His general thrust is 100% correct (innovation is a network, distributed effect, not lightblub moments), but he gets too many facts wrong along the way 🙁
Heh. Sounds kinda like reading “Capital in the 21st Century”, except that you never agree with the author. But his entire claim is baseless, because he ignores capital depreciation.
“What do you mean machines wear out and/or are superceded by more effective/efficient models or even entirely new methods that don’t require that step/process anymore?”
If someone gets their facts wrong, I regard their conclusions as suspect.
I do the opposite. If someone gets their conclusion wrong, i regard their facts as suspect.
It’s hard to reach an accurate conclusion from inaccurate data.
It’s easy to screw up the logic and reach an inaccurate conclusion, even with correct data.
I regard everyone as suspect. Even myself.
(innovation is a network, distributed effect, not lightblub moments)
This is wrong. Sometimes innovation is slow incremental change. Sometimes innovation is the stereotypical Ah Ha! moment.
Its not never, but it is incredibly, incredibly rare. Marconni is basically the only modern example. (innovation is not the same thing as invention. Its the application of new ways of solving a problem to old problems)
Well, I even disagree with your definition of innovation.
Innovation includes invention, but cover much broader ground (such as process improvements, etc).
The Ah ha moments are great, and often transformational. The fast majority of innovation is either “apply X in a different way to solve problem Y” or “Improve system Z so that it can do A”
Incremental and evolutionary innovation is an everyday occurrence. Revolutionary innovation is rare.

Gell-Mann Amnesia – Michael Crighton
I am aware of this, but its not quite like that.
It would be like if you picked up a history of the Revolutionary War, and it accurately describes the feel of Valley Forge, Washington’s conflicts with the Continental Congress, the shift to the south when the northern battles weren’t going so well for the Redcoats, etc.
But it just kept dropping tidbits like “John Adams lead the Revolutionary Army Across the Delaware River on Thanksgiving” and “The relatively unknown and unaccomplished Benedict Arnold joined the Redcoats”.
Nice – that would indeed take me out of the narrative and cast doubt on the whole thing.
A variation of the gell mann amnesia?
I generally dislike Matt Ridley so I won;t be reading it.
In 1990, Bill James had a brutal review of David Halberstam’s Summer of ’49 that called into question his entire work.
You may fire Ridley when ready.
Reviewing all of the passion above re: BBQ, I’m actually surprised that at least one enterprising BBQ joint owner hasn’t called his/her place “The One True Barbecue.” I would think that place would be packed, if for no other reason than people would want to mock it whilst eating their lunch.
Mind you, I’ve always fantasized about opening a traditional Prairie diner in Edmonton and calling it “Cholesterol City.” The closest we have is a place called “Barb ‘n Ernie’s,” which serves all of their breakfasts with Hollandaise (Hell, I suspect they’d bring you a mug of it, or mebbe a pitcher, if you asked nicely).
I’ve thought about opening a Strip Club and calling it “Illumi-Naughty’s”
This is right and proper, as Hollandaise sauce is, in fact, a beverage.
THIS (particularly my homemade Hollandaise)
I do mine in a double boiler. I’ve tried Julia Child’s blender trick but didn’t see that it saved much time and it made more of a mess.
I very often go super heavy on the lemon and paprika.
I make mine on direct heat. Seems like you lose a goodly amount of product using a blender. Mine is very heavy on the lemon.
“One True Barbeque” has the advantage of rhyming too, which helps it stick in the memory.
When I move to America I will open the All BBQ joint which will have every single style under one roof.
I think Moonlight in Owensboro may already have that covered. Except I don’t remember any Alabama white sauce.
My favorite buffet style restaurant. I haven’t been in years though since the in-laws moved across the river to IN.
This place does many different types and has all different kinds of sauces.
City BBQ kicks ass.
My longstanding joke has been to open a breakfast joint called the Eggs-essential Cafe. It was either that or a bar called The Library in a college town.
My girlfriend and I drove from Minnesota across central Wisconsin this weekend. We didn’t see one Biden sign until we reached Door County, where the amount of Biden and Trump signs seems to be roughly equal. That surprised me a little bit — I’d’ve figured Trump signs would dominate here, too. One notable anecdote is that we passed a Trump sign on consecutive days, and on the second day the sign had clearly been slashed beyond recognition. Take *that*, sign!
Dunno, the Trump victory, even if close, is starting to worry some of the GOP here in swing state PA. An acquaintance, who is tied to the County committee, says internal polling shows Biden with a much larger lead going into Sept. than Hillary had in 2016. Are we looking at a repeat of 1964 where the Goldwater base was enthusiastic as hell and convinced they would win because “polls weren’t reflecting the hidden support from those Goldwater voters who were supposed to be afraid to tell pollsters where they really stood?”
Interesting. Frank Luntz said the opposite recently, that Biden was behind 2016 Hillary in every swing state.
I assume that Luntz does not have access to internal polling which the parties do not release to media.
Central Ohio count: Trump 38, Biden 17.
Of course, I don’t live in the city, where Biden would probably catch up.

Cheong posted something equally moronic the other day along these lines distancing himself from (his idea of) icky libertarians. I don’t follow twitter but I saw it when I clicked on a link to something else from here.
Hey y’all, Yusef still needs practical and possibly legal advice (you are not his lawyers). And now I have an appointment with actual people, not just my reproachful superego, so I gotta amscray.
In general the president, any president, has less power than people think he does. We’d be better of if more people realize that, so they would calibrate their expectations and so they wouldn’t get so wound up about elections.
We’d be better off if people would cease fetishizing Presidents as some sort of omniscient savior (or devil).
He’s a man, hired to do a job no sane self-respecting person would even want.
You expect that out of a body of people that either want to tell others what to do, or want to be told what to do by others.
I’ve gotten 10 spam phone calls and two spam texts in the last 15 minutes. What the hell happened, and is there anything I can do about it?
I would say put the phone down and go for a walk, But I know where you live,
Two more since I posted this.
put the phone on the sidewalk for about 10 minutes, that’ll fix it
Throw your phone at the wall as hard as you can.
Oh, and welcome to being a battleground state.
Ok.
Oh no, it broke! Now what?
FREEDOM!!
The Democrats are using their AI to harras Trump supporters.
Replace your voicemail greeting with the sound for “this line is no longer in service” then shut the phone off for a while. The autodialers will hear the sound and remove you from the list. Make sure you don’t have some company-provided greeting like “Your call has been forwarded to an automatic voice message service.” in front of it.
Buy some stuff over the phone?
Turn your screening on. Most of the mobile carriers have it now.
Not going to shit on Animal’s thread.
My Etsy shop is going much better than I expected. Weird thing. I have FOUR different orders by FOUR different Karens.
*high five*
Congrats!
What are you selling?
Needlework stuff.
A long time ago, I decided to design patterns to sell and I got lines of credit and wholesale accounts because I thought I’d make kits out of some of them (all the materials included). I also had grandiose ideas about actually stitching everything I was selling. So I have/had a ginormous stock of fabric and threads lying around for the past 10 years while I nursed my butthurt that nobody liked my designs and wrote books instead.
I ALSO had a big collection of designs by other people, and one in particular who was in great demand. Little did I know HOW great, because when I went to sell them on eBay, those patterns made my mortgage payment that month.
I have always sold everything I want to declutter on eBay, but their listing prices are ginormous and they don’t allow you to charge actual shipping if it’s over X amount they determine to be reasonable and they are hostile to sellers. I have been meaning to list all this fabric and thread on Etsy but never got around to it. Well, I got around to it, thinking nobody would buy anything, but no harm in trying.
I’m almost more thrilled by this stuff going out the door than I am about the money, but the money doesn’t hurt. Since I bought all this stuff wholesale, I’m also not losing money by decluttering.
Some of those ladies remind me of one of Hayeksplosives’ avatars.
The original art (not mine) looks better. I did the best I could, which IMO wasn’t good enough. I’m not proud of any of that like I am my books. My favorite is one people HATED so I didn’t put it up in the shop.
I thought it looked good.

All for the needlepoint “OBEY” sign?
Not quite.
The irony, it lulz.
Right?!
It’s not even tongue-in-cheek or the slightest bit meta/self-aware. It’s totally straight-faced.
I could see me being a plumber, or electrician, or HVAC person, and walking into someone’s house and seeing that on the wall.
I would either:
1. Walk out and say, “Find someone else to fix your shit, bitch.”
or
2. Add a 5% Chief Underwriting Normative Tax charge.
I call it the PITA surcharge.
LOL!
How much time does it take to do one of those?
For me, about an hour. For a n00b feminist who thinks she’s subversive (it’s a whole genre, “subversive cross stitch”), several hours. That is to be expected for a n00b, though.

If you saw that money lying on the sidewalk, you’d stop and pick it up.
I didn’t think it would be that much money, but it wasn’t earning any just sitting here.
