GlibFit 4.0 – Coronavirus Edition XXXV: I’m Sick

by | Nov 15, 2020 | Fitness, GlibFit | 219 comments

I have been sick the second half of this week. So, sorry Glibfitters, but I just do not have it in me to write a fullblown article.  This is my barely disguised open post.

My symptoms kind or, sort of, fit Covid-19 because most seasonal stuff does.  That did not prevent my wife from immediately jumping to the conclusion I have it.  Oldest daughter home from college insisted I get tested.  For the sake of family peace, I did.  Thank goodness there is now a mouth swab test.  I probably would not have caved if they had to shove a swab up my nose to tickle my brain.  Unsurprisingly, my results came back negative.  I know you are all shocked.

The barely discernible upside to this episode is I have now contributed to increasing the number of tests in my county and the number of negative results.  Hopefully, this will contribute to more freedom in my county.  More than my vote did anyway.

As for working out, I didn’t this week.  You all know the drill.  Let us know what you did, the progress you are making toward your goal(s), and your righteous, manifold complaints about your governor.

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

My coronavirus bitch of the week: I find it astounding the stories of overwhelmed emergency rooms due to the dreaded second wave never have any definitive numbers.  Every time I read a story it’s interviews with doctors, hospital administrators, and the like.  The reporting never contains the total number of ICU beds, how many are being used, how many are taken by Covid-19 patients, and the number of available ICU beds. This tweet illustrates why.

I can’t decide on a single song for this week’s music.  So, I present you a oneoff album that isn’t on Spotify and I can’t find the CD for sale anywhere.

I stepped on the scale last night for the first time since March. I’ve put on 25 pounds since then and have a tummy like the Christmas Grinch. Ugh…

    • Rothbardsbitch

Me too 🙁 The gym is closed and running causes me pain due to a medical condition. Still I’ve got to figure something out, I shouldn’t of donated my bicycle.

  2. l0b0t

Sorry you are sicky-sicky, Chafed. I hope you are better soon.

I stumbled across a Disney film I have never before seen and I keep thinking of Western Sloper all the while – The Boatniks

  3. IRBE

Hi Chafed! Thanks and greetings from NOCal. Sorry to hear you are feeling sick. Get well soon. Positive side you should be all well by Thanksgiving.

Weather here is sublime. Two great hikes this weekend. Lots of people..lots of masks..lots of dumbasses.

G-fit update: Sleep as first priority with the goal of 9 hrs/nite…OBTAINED*. Food priority, highest quality proteins (no refined carbs), less than 12 feeds/wk within 5hr feed window/day…13 FEEDS/CROISSANT FAIL CARBO BUT DELICIOUS. Limit alcohol consumption to weekends EXCEEDED AND PAID PRICE–SHIT. Exercise daily with hiking, stretching and whatever bands/weights/calisthenics’ to burn 2600 cals/day before bed: MISSED 1 DAY—PRICE PAID. Continue using as many Wim Hoff/meditative techniques that are beneficial to my perceived resilience including breathing exercises, fasting and cold adaptions. SKIPPED 2 DAYS-FOR SHAME.

IN *SUM: 1 Thessalonians 5:7: “For those who sleep, sleep at night, and those who get drunk, are drunk at night.”

Read an interesting article on SLEEP..Sabbath Ramblings: Now I Lay Me Down To Sleep (5 Key Principles For A Good Night’s Rest). https://bengreenfieldfitness.com/article/sabbathramblings/get-better-sleep-naturally/ He is extremely wonky when it comes to fitness but has some great advice and links on sleep. Good stuff.

On positive note: Took my dog to the Vet. Her liver function has improved, so we are cutting back on the steroids. We also started her on magic mushrooms. She seems to be responding favorably to the new treatment scheme. Btw the CBD and shrooms she is probably pretty high…You know the saying “Stoned dog..happy dog!” Increased mileage/elevation on the trail. 10 miles in last 2 days which is marked improvement from a couple weeks ago.

¡Todos, salven una gran semana! Sáltate una comida o tres …

    • DEG

It’s good you’ve hit some of the goals.

It’s also good that your dog is doing better.

    • Chafed

I’m impressed you found a way to get 9 hours of sleep per night. Please share your method.

That’s great news about your dog.

      • Hyperion

I’ve gotten at least 9 hours of sleep in the last week. Maybe a little exaggeration…

      • IRBE

No kids at home. I go to bed with my head facing east at 2030 and wake at 530. I do some breathing exercises and I am out in 5 minutes. Night shade blindfold and fan for white noise. Toss and turn as needed. Haven’t used an alarm for 5 yrs.

    • Tundra

Happy to hear about the pup!

Mouth taping (no shit!!) has helped my sleep a lot.

      • Kwihn T. Senshel

        That seems terrifying to me.

Can you share a bit more? How do you deal with congestion or things like that?

Also, I know you had mentioned it before, but where did you learn about this?

      • Tundra

        Sorry, dude. Away for awhile.

I learned about it from this book.

It’s actually really simple. I use a small piece of surgical tape to keep my lips shut. It was weird at first, but eliminated my snoring and improved my sleep. I wear a watch that tracks sleep and the nights that I tape, my sleep is longer, my pulse ox is better and my respiration is lower.

        Try it!

  4. Gender Traitor

Started my vacation Wednesday and went to the Y three days in a row. Would’ve gone yesterday, but my arms are tired & sore, probably from leaf raking Friday afternoon. Just signed up for a strength training class for late tomorrow morning. I hope I don’t regret it, but I’m trying to get in as much structured exercise as I can before DeWine shuts down fitness centers again. (Announcement expected Thursday.)

    Feel betterquicker, Chafie.

    • DEG

Hopefully you can get more work in before Gauleiter DeWine fucks over the state.

    • Agent Cooper

DeWine can get bent. Go to the Current Trends dashboard for Ohio and show me how the increase in cases is any more dangerous than the March-April wave.

      • Nephilium

But he’s started a flu dashboard!

  5. Aloysious

My efforts to change my diet to be more healthy have borne mixed results. The Tartiflette was a welcome addition to the menu, my version contains less dairy and a ton of mushrooms and garlic.

The cast iron skillet pizza was delicious as well, lots of bell peppers and of course a ton of the garlic.

Awesome choice on the music. Liked this album much more than the 1996(?) album with Glen Hughes. High lights for me are track 3 with Dave Grohl, track 8 with the late and very much missed Peter Steele, track 9 with his Ozzness, and track 10, possibly the only song with Billy Idol singing that I like.

Get well and better soon, Chafed. Tyrannical governer shit-spits can fuck right off.

    • hayeksplosives

Cast iron skillet pizza is the absolute bomb-diggedy.

      • l0b0t

Hell yeah! I can almost taste the delicious crispy cornmeal stuck to the bottom of the crust.

      • Aloysious

Try smearing the skillet with butter and a dusting of Parmesan or Romano or aged Gouda before filling the pan with the crust. Makes a crusty crust that you won’t forget.

      • EvilSheldon

Oh my. That does sound good…

    • DEG

My efforts to change my diet to be more healthy have borne mixed results.

Small changes. You’re improving right? Just keep improving.

Tyrannical governer shit-spits can fuck right off.

      Seconded.

      • Aloysious

Am improving, yes. My great weakness is getting bored with everyday food; that’s when I start shoving junk food in my face.

      • DEG

Not being at the office has helped me. No office snack bar to graze at.

  6. hayeksplosives

Sorry you’re sick, Chafed. Hope you get better soon. I guess you’re in a Threat Level Midnight, er, Purple county.

I haven’t managed to shift a pound this week.

But my average blood pressure is getting lower. In a good way.

    • DEG

But my average blood pressure is getting lower. In a good way.

      Good.

    • Chafed

You are going in the right direction HS.

  7. Ownbestenemy

Weather permitting…another SpaceX launch with 4 hooooomans. 50/50 chance.

    • hayeksplosives

      Thanks for the reminder!

  8. Fourscore

I’ve foregone any exercise and have spent several hours a day hiding in the woods, patiently waiting for Friends of Bambi to stumble by and fall down. So far they have mostly been hiding somewhere that I haven’t been looking.

So this morning I’m discreetly hunkered down, waiting and freezing, temps are in the 20s, wind blowing 15-20 MPH with some serious gusts and it begins to snow. As I sit there, questioning my sanity, I ask myself why do I do this? We’re not hungry, we don’t need the food, there are some costs involved. Finally, it came to me, I do this because I can, I do this because I have a choice, I could stay in bed but don’t. I had to smile, I’m doing something I did with my Dad 65-70 years ago. Something I can no longer do with my brothers. I do it because I can and some day soon I won’t be able to. I have to be hunting, because I can…

    • l0b0t

I can think of no better reason. G/d bless you and keep you sir.

    • Drake

      Good hunting!

      • dbleagle

Enjoy the hunt Fourscore! Hopefully some deer will fall over in front of you.

I cancelled my elk hunt this year because of the costs associated with the hunt versus the chance that WA will shut down and all that money will be sunk. Plus flying into Portland the day after the election was not a bright idea in my opinion.

I was feeling down when my dad mentioned his deer hunt starts T-day Friday. I asked if he and my brother could use a spotter/draw pusher. They could and I am heading out to hunt with my dad and brother, probably for the last time. Dad is in his mid-80’s and had heart surgery this spring. I am so looking forward to the camping and hunting with the man who taught me to shoot and then later hunt when I was wee lad.

      • zwak

Enjoy every second of it. My father, who also taught me to shoot, passed this year.

      • DEG

        dbleagle, enjoy the hun!

        zwak, sorry about your dad.

      • DEG

        hunt, not hun.

      • Fourscore

Good for you and your dad. I’m thinking both of you will remember this hunt for a long time. There are things we need to remember and you will.

I drove in my yard tonight and there was a doe and 2 fawns under the bird feeder ‘m still confident, tomorrow, tomorrow…

    • DEG

      Good hunting!

    • Tundra

      You are my hero.

      • Tundra

And I’m coming up to hunt with you next season. So don’t go anywhere.

    • Trigger Hippie

‘Finally, it came to me, I do this because I can, I do this because I have a choice, I could stay in bed but don’t. I had to smile, I’m doing something I did with my Dad 65-70 years ago.’

Oddly enough, despite my lack of passion for hunting, this also makes me smile.

  9. Drake

China virus tests seem to be coin-tosses from what I’ve heard.

I’ve had a sore ankle and shoulders for a few weeks so my wife convinced me to try acupuncture. Seems to be helping. I was a bit less sore today at the gym.

    • hayeksplosives

What’s with the “positive in left nostril, negative in right nostril”?

Can the virus really stay that localized, or is it pointing out how unreliable the results are?

      • Drake

Is that how Elin Musk got 2 positive and 2 negative tests last week?

      • hayeksplosives

Yes, as a matter of fact.

I think in his subtle way, he’s pointing out the fruitless ness of the testing and other protocols.

      • limey

Erykah Badu? She said she was tested three times within 24hrs after the positive test and they all came back negative. I’d guess it was a false positive from whichever nostril. These were all “rapid” tests but I don’t know what kind.

      • LCDR_Fish

I’m supposed to get a “rapid” test from the Navy next month – apparently no longer a brain swab, just a nasal one. We’ll see.

      • limey

I’m guessing at some point I’ll be required to take one to continue my college course, or there will be something work related.

    • DEG

I have a vague memory of some work showing acupuncture alleviates certain types of pain. I think the thought was a release of endorphins.

In any event, it’s good that you are less sore.

      • Drake

She seems practical. Hunted down some muscle knots in my leg and shoulders and rammed needles right into them. More painful than the normal needles but immediately loosened things up. Even ran a current through a couple of them.

      • Trigger Hippie

        Holy misthread, Batman!

  10. Ownbestenemy

Oldest son wants us all to get tested for no reason before t-giving before he comes over. Not sure how I am gonna break it to him that its useless for us to go get it.

The caveat is he lives with his grandparents.

    • Ayn Random Variation

Isn’t it dumb as hell to get tested if you have no symptoms? Even if you test negative it means nothing, since you can catch it at any time after the test.

      • Ownbestenemy

It is…he is only 19 and the media has done a good job at breaking him

      • Nephilium

So… more punk music for him?

  11. Gustave Lytton

Sorry you’re under the weather Chafed. My eyerolling at the increasing positivity rate is that almost everywhere the vast vast majority of results is still not covid (assuming it’s mostly either CLI symptomatic or potentially exposed people getting tested).

Partially frozen turkey breast is about go on the grill today. Hopes and prayers.

Looks like I missed the boat to order paper products. Not completely out but not in a great position either. Wifey is still living in pre-covid fantasyland where you can let things run out and then run to the fully stocked store. I kept telling her we need to keep on top of those stuff but she hates full cupboards because she can’t see everything all at once and wants to just use up any stockpiled amounts before shopping for them again.

    • Gustave Lytton

And the local rag has actually been pretty good about putting boxes of various current covid related stats on their daily covid story covering the state’s numbers release.

      State’s raw version
      https://public.tableau.com/profile/oregon.health.authority.covid.19#!/vizhome/OregonCOVID-19Update/CaseandTesting

Still have overall ICU and non-ICU beds available but the demand is clearly up. The real heart of the matter is this state never saw an initial wave.

    • Plinker762

Yeah, I get back to Spokane from Anchorage just after the announcement that WA is shutting down tomorrow. I looked around the house and found I am low on TP. Stores are already swamped. Looks like work is going to be buying some TP from McMaster Carr tomorrow.

      • Threedoor

We shop in clarkston and love on the less retarded side of the river in Idaho. My wife was going to go shopping after a dentist appointment on Wednesday. That got moved up to today and will probably be a disaster. Costco and Walmart are on the stupid side.

All these petty tyrants learned that everyone just rolls over. I fear the next four years are going to be really bad.

  12. zwak

So, I used to be one of those mildly athletic types, you know, sort of in generally good condition without really trying. I enjoyed walking, did a lot of backcountry packing, and even snowshoe camping. That sort of thing. Well around a dozen years ago I seemed to be falling out of shape. nothing specific, but I couldn’t walk as far, ride my bicycle as far, and though I never admitted it, was having some balance issues. Then a major back injury seemed to take too long to heal (two years on workers comp). And no matter the exercise I was trying, nothing was getting better. Though, and I will readily admit this, I hate exercising and only half-assed it.

Two and a half years ago, I found the reason out. I started losing feeling in my left fingertips. And when I called my doctor to get this checked (I thought it was a pinched nerve) they told me to go straight to the ER. And after the standard rigamarole of nurses, minor tests, and waiting, they gave me an MRI. And after a VERY long MRI, I found out I had MS.

And it sucks. But, two or three times a week I do a comprehensive set of resistance exercises, walk my doy as often as I can, in good weather I ride my vintage Schwinn around as much as possible, and when the weather isn’t so good but isn’t so bad, I ride my adult tricycle.

And now I find out my back is getting bad again. Fuck does 2020 suck.

    • Gustave Lytton

Crap, sorry zwak. The adult tricycle brings a smile to my face. Years ago when I was a wee lad in Corn Valley, there was a guy who rode one around town. Kind of goofy looking that he wasn’t all there but he always had a big grin on his face.

      • zwak

The adult trike is OK, but boy does it suck in turns. I have been thinking about getting a tadpole recumbent (two wheels in front) and going to town, but right now I am kinda putting a hold on things until they get back to me on the new back issue. But, I do have an old Schwinn three-wheeler I am restoring and these things work great at the big Portland Swap Meet. Which, hopefully, that is back next year.

    • DEG

      Sorry.

A friend’s wife has MS. She’s on a round of medications that help her, but they are quite expensive.

      • hayeksplosives

A lot of those new “biologics” drugs that end in “umab” are expensive for now since they’re new but damned they are great for illnesses where the immune system attacks part of the body, such as psoriasis, MS, some asthma, R arthritis, etc.

I took Nucala injections for a year or two. They were paid by the pharmaceutical company; I don’t know if that’s how they create demand or what.

Anyway, good luck with your MS coping/treatment.

      • l0b0t

Ooooh! Thanks, I’ll talk to my doctor. My psoriasis, which has always mildly presented on my knuckles during the winter, has spent 2020 hanging out on my septum and upper lip. Corticosteroids keep it somewhat at bay but I’ll do anything to get rid of it.

      • Lord Humungus

I’ve had really good luck with Cocoa Butter cream.

A few years ago my psoriasis, which is in the corner near one of my eyes, used to be quite bad and flaking. Now it’s back to normal, as long as I nightly apply Palmer’s Cocoa Butter cream. There is a slight “wrinkle scar” there but nothing you would see unless you were standing 6 inches away from me.

      • l0b0t

Thank you, thank you, thank you. Glad to hear it worked for you, I’ll try it.

      • Lord Humungus

        an Amazon link

before I was using a cocoa tar cream and that also worked. But the Cocoa butter has been even better. No more flakes or redness! It also helps with dry winter issues. During the cold season it looked like someone punched me in the eye. No longer!

      • IRBE

Anything with umab is a monoclonal antibody of sorts. Yep those drugs are expensive. Problem with those is that people develop ADA anti-drug antibodies..so they don’t work for them. See Humira…50% of people that take it develop ADA to it within months.

    • Tundra

      Sorry Zwak.

Have you played around with any food strategies?

      • zwak

Right now my drop foot is getting pretty bad, so I am looking at specific exercises and stretches. But, I did start to talk to my neurologist about orthotics. But that needs to happen after the new back issue is handled.

      • Surly Knott

Orthotics can be a big help with back issues. Ask your neurologist, and podiatrist/gp/whoever you’re consulting about the foot.

    • limey

I’m sorry to read that, zwak. A reminder to me to not take my health for granted. Something I have been thinking about more and more recently, as well as my folks’.

    • Nephilium

As a rider, if you’re interested Team Left Hand is a thing.

      Best of luck.

    • Trigger Hippie

Shit man, I don’t know what to say. I can only hope you have solid access to healthcare coverage and steady employment. Best wishes for you, sir.

    • zwak

Thanks, everyone. On the bright side, I have great health care due to my wifes fear of health issues, not surprising seeing her parents always suffered from issues. That, and I got to retire next week at 49! The wife just wants me to be as much of a handyman as possible and take the steps to shut down my business legally.

      • Chafed

I’m sorry this has happened zwak. I hope you find a successful treatment.

  13. DEG

I know you are all shocked.

WAIT!! WAIT!! You have to let me get my shocked face.

On a serious note, I hope you get well soon. It’s good it isn’t Lil Rona because then CA’s Health Nazis will be after you.

My weight has started fluctuating again. Last week I had a bad week with working out. I only went to the gym twice last week. I was winded after Friday’s workout which involved squats and sled pushing. I had a little hamstring pain at the end of the squat workout, which might be due to the herniation.

Yesterday I spent all day working in the yard. Leaf clean-up. Planting trees. Expanding flower beds. We had our first frost last night. I still have mulch to spread on an expanded flower bed. I’ll work on it until the ground freezes.

    • IRBE

HI DEG, Thanks for the well wishes above. I wouldn’t mess with that hamstring pain..I don’t think that is something you can push through. The yard work sounds pleasant and productive which is pretty good. Stay well.

      • DEG

It’s possible the herniation got aggravated because of a lack of mobility. Last week not only did I slack off on the gym, but I slacked off on my PT stretches and other mobility work.

We’ll see how this week goes.

      • IRBE

…when I was younger I thought stretching was not important and then it was. If I had to choose between working out or stretching, I would do the stretch…

Speaking of mobility..I was watching this guy do modified mountain-climber where you bring your foot up past your hands in order to increase mobility or ability to get up off the floor. You really have to stretch to do that.

        Stay limber, my friend.

  14. Tundra

    Chafed, my friend!

So sorry to hear about your illness, but if Chris Christie can defeat the ‘vid – it doesn’t stand a chance with you.

My governor is being a prick again (he’s got an inferiority complex that makes him want to be like yours). I think I have a backup if the motherfucker shuts my gym down again.

I mentioned it in last month’s What Are We Reading, but if you are an older lifter I highly recommend The Barbell PrescriptionL Strength Training For Life After 40 .

Great goddamn book. After reading it, I looked at what I was doing and realized that 5/3/1, while awesome, might not be the right thing for me. I went back to a novice program as outlined in the book.

    Monday: Heavy squat and press
Tuesday: Power cleans and lat pulls (or chins)
Thursday: Squat (90-95% of Monday) and bench
    Friday: Deads and chins

After three weeks I’m pretty happy with it. Lifting more often is actually helping my soreness a lot. In the book, he discusses why us old fucks need intensity, not volume, so 5 reps it is! I also upped my protein and trying to get to bed earlier.

I bought a set of fractional plates so I can keep upping weight when 5 lbs is too much.

    Fight the good fight, Glibfitters!

    • hayeksplosives

Walz is doing a fine job of imitating Newsom’s overreach and arbitrary closures. But then Walz takes it up a notch even from Newsom, who at least acknowledges that not all California counties are the same. Newsom has proven to be a total fucker by forcing closures of vineyards except for his own.

Walz seems more of a True Believer in the harm of COVID-19, whereas Newsom is a cynical fuck.

      I don’t know what’s worse.

      • zwak

Newsom kind of had to recognize that, as so many of the back-side counties were in open defiance of him, and he is so vain that he had to make it look planned.

      • Tundra

With One-Man Rule, what difference does it make?

    • DEG

I’ll put that book on my to-buy list. Thanks!

      • Tundra

Can’t recommend it enough. Rippetoe talked about it on his podcast and I ordered it that day.

    • DEG

      🙂

We had a dead whale at the beach where I lived as a kid. Pretty sure they just towed it far out to sea. No dynamite. Wadn’t nearly that big either.

Things went downhill when they replaced the highway department with the transportation department. And then again when they put the state parks in their own department.

      That was awesome! Thanks!

  15. The Late P Brooks

Finally, it came to me, I do this because I can

The very best reason of all.

  16. Lord Humungus

Today was chest and tricep day. My bench press weight is still down from my best of a few years ago, ~320 pounds single rep. But I managed to do several reps of 230 today. Slowly inching back up. Not bad for a 50yo once office worker.

Weight: I’m up to 200 pounds, plan to lose another 5 pounds before my yearly physical early next year. Luckily at 6’2″ I carry my weight well. It’s the blood sugar levels I get when my weight goes up that worries me.

However my running times and distances are getting worse the better my upper body strength gets! Well that and age. I’ll try to push the mileage back up to ~10 miles a week, which should be easier given my blessed state of unemployment.

    • DEG

      Good progress!

  17. TARDis

Sorry you’re sick. Hope you are all better for gluttony day.

  18. The Late P Brooks

You Trumpalo Plague deniers and your false negatives should all be rounded up and shot. Everybody knows this virus is 100% communicable and 150% lethal.

Somehow I’ve managed to eat out at several different bars weekly. And go to the store at least once a week. Go the the recently opened library. And go on four flights. And stay at a hotel.

But somehow I’ve never had COVID. Or if I had it was asymptomatic or it was the cold I had during summer. I don’t know. EF has had two COVID tests, all because of her job where she was in contact with someone positive. Both of the results came back negative.

I do take 1000iu of vitamin D a day which is supposed to help.

But I’m also the guy who hasn’t had a flu for over 20 years. And I only get a cold once a year, twice tops.

    • blackjack

That’s how I was until I got my kid. For a long while there it was two or three cold/flu’s a year. Now, he’s 8 and they’ve slowed down some. Now, I just get injured when I take him to the skatepark. Apparently, crashing hurts worse when you’re over 50, who knew?

    • DEG

I’ve been going out a lot. One of the places I go to ignores the municipal mask ordinance.

      No Lil Rona for me.

I think I had it last January, but since the state opened back up? Nah.

  20. Hyperion

Anyone have any planned flights out of the USA after Jan 2021? Just wondering if that is going to be possible, at all. Yeah, I’m sure everyone will be able to pour into the country at every border point with no questions, but getting out, will it be possible?

  21. Lord Humungus

EF and I just drank some beer, a one pint, 6flz Imperial Stout – Sextuple Barrel Big Bad Baptist – which cost $20 via the local restaurant.

It tasted so close to Backwoods Bastard… which I could have bought four 12oz bottles of for slightly less.

    • DEG

      I like Backwoods Bastard.

I think I’ve had some Big Bad Baptist.

    • Nephilium

The local has a variant of the Bastard on tap (French Toast Bastard), which I’ve avoided.

  22. limey

That’s been the BBC, Channel 4, Guardian etc, method of reporting this. The huge gaslighting about massively overwhelmed hospitals by choosing very specific isolated incidents and reporting them like they are the whole story (one doctor for 8 patients overnight in a ward), and avoiding any discussion of real numbers in context. Those “Nightingale” field hospitals were barely used at all but they wouldn’t show it. The relentless propaganda and sloganeering about PROTECT THE NHS was hammered on ad nauseam.

    • Drake

My favorite was the story in Brazil where legislators went to visit an “overwhelmed” hospital and nobody was there.

      • Hyperion

The other great story about Brazil, untold by the US media, is that if you are a massively corrupt politician you can actually go to prison for that shit, or at least be impeached AND removed from office. Ask commie fuckstains Lula and Dilma about that if you won’t believe me. While here in the US, nothing will ever happen to you no matter what you do. You could murder puppies and Jesus here on the front lawn of the Whitehouse and the worst that will happen to you is getting another Nobel Prize.

Still 10lbs short of my max inclined dumbbell press weight from pre-covid, but I am making progress on most other exercises (although the difference in these machines from my previous gym on some machines – abdominals, standing calf raise, etc – is frustrating. Also need to start planking – rumor has it that the Navy is officially replacing sit-ups/crunches with a plank next year – could be as early as April – since the PT exam was put on hold all year 2020. Could be a min of 2 minutes – which seems extreme given that I can only do about 30 seconds – but I need to work on my abs/guts either way.

Generally, I look at the total deaths curves. States with early onset took their hit and are now concave down. Now, generally, the later the onset, the more concave up.

I’ve got nothing against progress or vaccines, but, without them, we have every reason to believe there is a ceiling on the death rate at 2,000/M. It’s just a question of when your jurisdiction gets there. Much worse odds are ignored by most people every day, not that dying is the worst thing this virus can do to you.

    Serious, in spades

When it comes to economic policy, President-elect Joe Biden is putting racial disparities high on the agenda as he assembles his administration.

The incoming president tapped Mehrsa Baradaran, whose book “The Color of Money” is a key reference on the racial wealth gap, to prepare the Treasury Department for the transition. She’s joined by Lisa Cook, an economist at Michigan State University, on the “landing team” for the Federal Reserve and banking and securities regulators. They are among more than 500 experts who will focus on race as they shape Biden’s policies on issues like housing, health and small-business lending. Baradaran declined to comment, and Cook referred questions to the Biden team.

Observers say they’ve never seen expertise about race figure so prominently in economic roles.

    ——-

Such personnel decisions hint at the incoming administration’s emphasis on addressing disparities.

“Inequality in our economy causes a lot of problems,” said Ben Zipperer, an economist at the Economic Policy Institute. “There’s a growing awareness that we can actually do something about it.”

Welcome to post racial America, where we will finally put our obsession with race to rest.

    NEEDZ MOAR CEnNTRAL PLANNING

L.L. Bean is withdrawing its support for a developer’s plan to build hundreds of homes on a 250-acre property it owns in Freeport, Portland Press Herald reported.

The plan KV Enterprises submitted to the Freeport Planning Board called for 329 single-family houses, 60 apartment units, 140 homes in 70 duplex buildings and eight commercial lots to be built over a period of up to 20 years off Desert and Old County Road, according to the Portland Press Herald.

However, Freeport residents opposed the project. Residents earlier this month raised concerns that the influx of people living in town — as many as 2,000 — would overwhelm municipal services and change the character of the community, the Portland Press Herald reported.

“The process and plan for a joint project with the Town of Freeport and a local developer veered from our original good intentions,” L.L. Bean CEO Stephen Smith said in a letter to the community. “As such, we feel that the best decision is to hold on this project until there is a clear and comprehensive plan agreed upon by the town and local residents regarding the best use of land in Freeport.”

Housing is all well and good, in theory, but not in our back yard.

    “Production model shown. Available 2021.⁣”

This is it, folks. The Hemi V8-powered Wrangler 392 is headed to production and we’ll likely see it in full detail sooner than we think. If you’re still doubting if it’s really a Hemi underneath the hood, turn on the sound of the teaser embedded above and listen to that glorious rumble.

Though this one basically confirms a V8-powered Wrangler is underway, it doesn’t guarantee that the Wrangler 392 concept we drove before is the exact model headed to production. But if it’s any indication, you can expect SRT’s 6.4-liter Hemi V8 to produce up to 450 horsepower (336 kilowatts) and 450 pound-feet (610 Newton-meters) of torque. These numbers will be above every other stock off-roader you can buy in the market today, including the upcoming Bronco Raptor.
