GlibFit 4.0 – Father’s Day Edition

by | Jun 19, 2022 | GlibFit | 220 comments

Happy Father’s Day everyone. I imagine those of you who can are getting together with your dad today. My parents are coming over shortly after this drops, so I’ll likely catch you during Glibs After Dark™. Dad is getting up there in age so I’m trying to make the most of every time we get together.

To say this year has been uneven for me would be an understatement. My fitness goals seem to be getting further away and my motivation has been inconsistent. So, let’s talk about dad bod.

Wikipedia defines dad bod as “a slang term in popular culture referring to a body shape particular to middle-aged men. The phrase has been adopted in U.S. culture to refer to a male who was once particularly lean or fit, but over time has gained an excessive amount of body fat, typically around the waist, leading to a “beer belly”. The arms, legs, and chest are usually still toned.” I wouldn’t know anything about that. *rolls eyes far enough back to look at brain*

Hilariously, Planet Fitness has five good things to say about dad bod:

1. IT IS JUST AS CAPABLE

Having a dad bod does not mean you’re unhealthy or weak. It means you’re strong and able to meet the challenging (and ever-changing) demands of a father, which include everything from coaching Little League to assembling strollers.

Whereas some athletes might need a whole day to rest and recover after a lengthy exercise routine, dads have the amazing ability to squeeze in a quick workout and then power through an afternoon of fatherly duties. The demands of a modern dad are high — so it makes sense that, with everything you have to balance, you might have an extra few pounds. And that’s totally OK!

2. THE DAD BOD PUTS FAMILY FIRST

The sexiest dads are the ones who think of their family before themselves. Before kids entered the picture, spouses may have admired their partners’ chiseled muscles and bachelor-style bods — but as soon as children arrived, priorities (and attractions) tend to shift. What makes a mother’s heart race? Seeing her husband unload the dishwasher and then drive the kids to soccer practice.

Sure, you might have to sacrifice a gym session to get it all done, but putting your family first means you value building family memories more than building the biggest bicep among your buddies.

3. IT IS (MOSTLY) HEALTHY

If you want to maintain perfect health, it’s no secret that foods like French fries, chicken nuggets, and ice cream are best avoided (most of the time). But balancing the schedules of every family member is no small feat. Sometimes fast food is your only option if you want to make it to all of your family’s obligations on time. And when your daughter scores her first goal in a soccer match, that calls for a celebratory ice cream.

4. THE DAD BOD IS SEXY

Our Planet Fitness survey found that more than half of women think dad bods are sexy and even prefer the dad bod over muscular men. Wondering why? For starters, the dad bod is associated with attractive personality traits — like a strong sense of humor, a down-to-earth mentality, and a healthy respect for work/life balance. Additionally, the dad bod is refreshingly real; built not solely of muscle, but heart, as well.

Of course, this isn’t to say men who enjoy sporting dad bods don’t have plenty of muscle to prove their manliness — they just also have the right number of imperfections to prove their authenticity. And both of those things are really sexy.

5. IT IS REALISTIC AND FAMILIAR

Simply put, people love the dad bod because it’s real. A dad bod is not the result of long hours at the gym, a crazy-strict diet, or any performance-enhancing supplements. It’s the result of a balanced, healthy lifestyle that includes broccoli and bicep curls but also welcomes burgers and birthday parties. It’s all about balance!

I’ve gotten back into the walking/hiking thing that was effective for me in my younger days. Halfway to goal weight, where I was on my 50th birthday, 20 pounds to go. The hilliness here is a real help, and I’m almost to the point where, for my more difficult walk up the tallest hill in town, I only had to stop once to let my heart rate get below my set max (120).

    • Chafed

      Good work OMWC.

    • Tundra

      Perfect.

      Enjoy the results!

  2. Zwak, who counted all his blessings, and counted only one.

Five days into recovery from surgery. I now have a walker/roller thingy, which is awesome. I can do laps around the house, at least the first floor. I smelled so bad, having not been allowed to take a shower until last night that I was scarring off dogs. But, all clean now, thanks to the wife. I am slowly getting my legs back under me, pain is lessening, and I can start bending now. I won’t be able to pick up more than 5lbs for the next month (“wife! Wife! WIFE!!!”) so, I got that going for me, which is nice? Anyway, no doing dishes, litterboxes, or working out. And while I love reading, I am pretty bored.

Anyway, I go back to the doc for a checkup next week. And we shall see.

    • Gender Traitor

Hope your recovery goes as quickly and comfortably as possible!

      For your wife’s sake. 😉

    • Mojeaux

And while I love reading, I am pretty bored.

    • KSuellington

Right on Zwak, at least you are on the road to a better back it sounds. Mend up well and hopefully your wife won’t end up killing your.
Yup, lazing around sounds real good but it really kind of sucks after a day or two.

    • Tundra

      Kill it.

      Good luck!

Tin foil hat. External main disconnects now required by 2020 NEC are not about safety for fire personnel and others but making an easy means to turn off power to undesirables.

    • robodruid

Why not. I am sure someone thought remote on/off is a good thing.

    • Scruffy Nerfherder

How often do firefighters get harmed or killed because of that?

      • Gustave Lytton

Like they wouldn’t just pop the meter if it was a concern?

    • juris imprudent

Seems it is a on-premise switch, which means a service visit for power provider as opposed to some remotely operated switch (which would be much more in your tin-foil territory).

      • Gustave Lytton

External breaker accessible by anyone with physical access to the outside of your house, not just power company personnel.

      • juris imprudent

Yeah, but that still means someone at your house. That is well within range of my firearms.

  5. JaimeRoberto (shama/lama/ding dong)

Little Glibfit activity this week since we became a plague house. Oddly it’s caused me to lose weight even though I’m eating normally.

Chicks gig dad bods because they signal stability.

    • Old Man With Candy

      How about Chubby Grandpa Bods?

      • Chafed

        Pornhub says chicks dig it.

      • Old Man With Candy

        Well, that settles THAT, then.

  6. Evan from Evansville

Similar to Zwak and walking recovery and adventures: I felt great yesterday. I’d moved to using just one crutch as a big cane, when walking around. I felt confident and I just tried walking around without any crutches at all. I certainly have a limp but I can do it. No speed and no agility, but no pain. I still need to use a crutch when going up and down stairs, but it’s much better than it was. I haven’t had any update on my CT scan and if I need extra surgery…and that’s good news. I really don’t think I’ll need to replace my replacement hip, but it is scary to think about. Good to feel progress that makes it clear that my ear is pointing closer and closer to ‘overthinking.’ Not productive.

Today, I’m feeling the same. A crutch for the stairs, but slow-mo, solo jaunts as I sizzlingly saunter through my flat-terrain habitat…or that’s what the imaginary crowd is cheering for..or something. I’m high. I’ve got this place to myself (and the dog!) for like two more hours. The help of my family has been overwhelming and full of love and sacrifice. I gotta say, though, I do just need some PRIVACY. This hardcore introvert just wants a place where there will be no (..ooh…get to use a line from Radiohead, my favorite band)…a place with no alarms, no surprises, please…”

I plan on enjoying the space while I got it. Time for a smoke outside. It’s been gorgeous recently. That’s all gonna end tomorrow. Eeeek.

If you look in the mirror and see fat you are fat. I am fat. Less fat than I used to be yet still fat. “Dad bods” are not ok it is merely fat acceptance. Don’t accept that being fat is ok. Change it to not being fat.

My stomach even with a pinch of “fat” at the waistline flattened significantly once I quit processed carbs and grains. If you have a “beer gut” it is most likely visceral fat around your organs and it is easy to get rid of with a change of diet.

Today was smoked freshly ground burger experiment #2. I ground beef back rib meat (ribs in the crock for bone broth) and chuck stuffed with jalapenos, cream cheese, swiss and bacon. The ding dang wind blew the smoker out earlier so I will have to finish them in the oven at work tomorrow.

    • Sean

I want to be your friend.

I did a one skillet meal prep today.

Made bacon and removed. Cooked a bunch of ground beef in the bacon fat. Added two ghost peppers, put the chopped bacon back in and added a lot of cooper Sharp American until melted.

        Would.

I went to the store this morning and walking past the deli counter got a craving for roast beef. I grabbed a pack and did not realize I paid $18 for a lb and a half of sliced roast beef until I got to my car. My next kitchen gadget will be a quality slicer.

      • westernsloper

        Ya, not retiring there.

    • db

When I do fresh ground burgers, I usually get something fatty like a chuck roast and also something lean like sirloin and chop them together in the food processor using “jog” for short bursts.

If you want to season it, add it before you’ve finished chopping, but I often don’t use any seasoning when I make freshly ground burgers.

  10. Tulip

The wind has really picked up, so I will be cooking inside.😞

    • LCDR_Fish

Best mowing weather in months this weekend. Feels absolutely great.

      • Tulip

It’s gorgeous, just too windy for my charcoal grill.

      • Not Adahn

I should have taken advantage of the weather to mow today. I did not.

      • Ted S.

I ran the weed whacker yesterday.

Dad, before his fall, got a new one that is pushed like a mower but has the weed whacker strings instead of mowing blades. My BIL hadn’t seen one before on really liked the idea of it. It also makes doing the yard much easier than a regular weed whacker.

      • Gender Traitor

Ooh! Ooh! I want one of these? Link? Or at least make/model purty please??

Caveat: I’d want a cordless electric one, NOT gas-powered. (Yeah, I know – picky, picky, picky!)

      • MikeS

Wow. At least the link works.

      • Gender Traitor

Thanks! (And in case you didn’t see me mention this earlier, last I saw my new “ant moat” was working like a charm keeping those pests out of my hummingbird feeder!)

      • MikeS

Nice! Glad it worked. Lately when I’m walking thorough the bird feeder/house sections I’ve noticed more and more hummingbird feeders are coming with ant moats molded right into the top of the feeder. One of those solutions where you go “why didn’t I think of that?”

      • Ted S.

It looks like this one, although there are others on the market. I couldn’t find any electric in a quick search.

“Walk behind string trimmer” seems to be the relevant search term.

      • Gender Traitor

Thanks! I’ve found some smaller electric ones listed at Lowe’s that MIGHT work for our fairly small yard. I just never knew such a thing existed!

      • Ted S.

I didn’t either. Since we don’t really have a lawn — just a yard, a weed whacker works better than a mower.

My dad, being a retired electrician, “knows people” (or knew people, since I’m assuming a lot of them are now dead/retired), and was recommended this by the small-engine place he’s always dealt with for things like the generator.

        I’m not the handy type.

  11. Pine_Tree

I don’t think I ever had what’s normally called a “dad bod”. It’s my impression they’re what happen when skinny-ish guys put on weight. Hence the fairly tight skin, etc. I was never skinny; I was always that husky kid that always ended up as a guard or tackle in football. Never sloppy fat, but always too much extra atop my belt – loose soft skin. The “dad bod” thing always ticked me off because I wished my extra was at least tight/hard instead.

Anyway, I’m 50 now and it’s mostly fixed – started down the right path about when the plandemic started. We have a rowing machine at work and dumbells and a few other things, and I had a work friend who was into it, so I started. Way better now. Wish I could get my skin tighter right above my waist, though, since that was my irritation point for decades.

  12. LCDR_Fish

Pulled my lower back something awful about week ago doing some yard work (shoulda just cut the “weed” (small sapling???) down first rather than trying to pull it out). Didn’t give me too much trouble the first couple days of the week – which was good because I was on the largest Aircraft Carrier I’ve ever worked on – and there were a LOT of ladders….

A lot more discomfort the rest of the week (office chair issues) – although the hotel bed was ridiculously comfortable compared to my shitty mattress – using the sofa at home this weekend before I had back to Norfolk for another week on orders.

A lot of random pains and aches all around my back now though – will probably bring it up during my next PT appt and try to fit in another referral later in July. If I have time to do more workouts this next week than just stretching and walking (due to schedule) that would probably help. Definitely want to see about integrating Deadlifts into one of my workouts before I lose the chance.

Also watched Guy Ritchie’s flick from last year “Wrath of Man” on prime last night – good stuff. I’ll pick up the BR – knew it was Statham, but don’t recall it being advertised as a Ritchie flick. Also noticed that all the James Bond flicks are available for free there (even the new one) – with the weird exception of “Spectre” and “Never Say Never Again”. Watched Dr. No last night and will try and work through the rest sequentially – more fun than those old TBS reruns – no commercials, HD, etc.

    • Ted S.

I believe “Never Say Never Again” wasn’t produced by the Broccolis, which is why it wouldn’t show up with the rest of them. I don’t know about “Spectre”.

I’m assuming the 60s spoof “Casino Royale” wasn’t there either?

      • LCDR_Fish

That rings a bell. Spectre is kinda weird since the brand new Bond is free, but that might a production funding thing.

Didn’t look for classic Casino Royale this time.

    • KSuellington

Never Say Never is not an Eon Productions Bond movie, but Spectre is, so kind of strange that one would be excluded. We have been going through all the Bond movies in order with the kids since I bought the DVD collection this past year. We just watched Moonraker a few weeks back, maybe the next one will go on tonite. Dr No is my favorite, but Goldfinger and The Spy Who Loved Me are real close. Also really enjoyed On Her Majesty’s a couple months back as it is the Bond I have seen the least. Telly Savales makes a great villain.

      • Gustave Lytton

        Mrs Peel. Mmmm….

From Russia With Love, Goldfinger, and the first part of Thunderball are my favorites. Living Daylights has a soft spot for me despite the overall poor quality.

      • The Bearded Hobbit

I’ve been reading the original Ian Fleming series on Kindle. Probably 75% of them were free, the rest for like $2. Some of the books, particularly the earlier ones, were quite unflattering to black people, bordering on racist. There was one particular line that mentioned that Bond liked the colored folk as long as they stayed in their place. Also, I have realized that Fleming was not actually that great of a writer. Diamonds Are Forever, for example, is one of the rare times that the movie is actually better than the book.

      • KSuellington

There are some great location shots in that film and the cherry red Mach I tearing around Vegas was awesome.

      • The Bearded Hobbit

        +JStJ

      • EvilSheldon

That’s saying something, as Diamonds Are Forever is a contender for all time worst Bond movie.

The Living Daylights was awesome. The only movie in the whole pantheon that comes across like a Cold War spy flick instead of a noisy action flick.

      • The Bearded Hobbit

Did I mention Jill St John?

      • C. Anacreon

The cassette tape in her bikini bottom was worth seeing the movie by itself.

      • l0b0t

The Living Daylights movie used several elements that were in the book Never Say Die, but didn’t make it into the film adaptation.

      • l0b0t

But it introduced us to Mr. Wint and Mr. Kidd, the gay assassins.

    • Scruffy Nerfherder

Look up cat/camel stretches. They help.

I’ve got arthritis in L5/S1 joint from an old injury and that is one of the few exercises that helps.

  13. westernsloper

I haven’t listened to Thaddeus Russell in awhile. Holy shit, his episode 215 was worth a listen. It is phat with information.

  14. Tulip

Garden report: still harvesting lettuce (will plant more among the squash to shelter from heat and sun), picked over 2 lbs more green beans since last report, picked more beets, planted more green beans. Tomatoes plants have tiny green tomatoes. Yay!

    • Fourscore

The plants are doing well, tomatoes/cabbage/peppers. Blossoms on the ‘maters, small peppers visible and some cabbages are starting to form a small ball. I have 3 different harvest times on the cabbage, early, medium and late. Over the years I learned to start cabbages with 2 seeds, one cabbage will become dominate and be picked earlier, leaving it’s little brother some growing room and about 5-6 weeks later another nice cabbage.

Carrots and radishes didn’t grow, old seed maybe or poor farming practices. My grandpa body just doesn’t seem to holding up so well so I’m going to leave well enough alone and not try to make believe I’m still the man I was a few years ago. Can’t fool Mama Nature, not forever anyway.

“It’s a dream come true for MLS fans, soccer fans, and anyone who loves sports. No fragmentation, no frustration — just the flexibility to sign up for one convenient service that gives you everything MLS, anywhere and anytime you want to watch.

Limiting access to your product to one single outlet seems like a really bad way to expand your customer base. Or even maintain your customer base.

      • rhywun

I would have to sign up for a half-dozen pay streams to keep up with the soccer I used to watch on cable a few years ago. Progress!

Meanwhile I’m still paying through the nose for ESPN that as of next year I will have no reason to watch and I know my cable provider will ass-rape me if I try to dump the TV portion and keep the broadband that I need and which they are the sole provider of at my address.

      • KSuellington

Happy Father’s Day to all the dad bods out there in Gliblandia. I mentioned it yesterday, but this dad got his ass up (and down!) the highest peak in the continental US this past Monday. It was awesome and one of the three hardest days or so of my life that I’ve pushed myself physically. An absolutely stunning 22 mile round trip, although the last few miles I could’ve done without. Once again I’ve seen that the Eastern Sierras are one of the most beautiful parts of the planet. We hung out in the Alabama Hills at a sweet rental house for a couple days after and then went camping at a high elevation lake but the wife started feeling ill so we came back Thursday instead of Saturday. Well we all finally got the Vid, almost 27 months into the Panic. I think we actually all had it in January 2020 as we are amongst the least Vid careful people I know , my wife works in a hospital and I have been in thousands of peoples’ homes since then and nada. Kids are back to normal after 2 days and wife is almost there. I got it last so today has been the worst and it’s as bad as a medium strength cold.

    • Ted S.

I’m careless too, although since I’m a loner by nature I was “social distancing” back when it was the antisocial thing to do.

We had a realtor in to look at the house and property earlier this week and since he failed a covid test a week earlier he suggested we wear masks and not get too close to him. I haven’t felt any symptoms since then.

      • Lackadaisical

        Where will you move?

      • Ted S.

Someplace local. We just need to get off the top of the hill since having Dad up here on the hill over the winter is a very bad idea.

      • Lackadaisical

That’s too bad, seemed like you liked the location if nothing else. You’re a good kid.

      • Ted S.

It’s a beautiful location, and the realtor says it can legitimately be marketed as a hilltop property with mountain views. We also own a woodlot that can probably be split to put up two more vacation homes. And it’s also surprisingly close to everything, since the grocery store is about 10 minutes away.

It is beautiful, and it will be a shame to have to move. But the house itself is really getting into parlous territory. 🙁

Then again, I also recently passed by the starter house my Dad’s parents built in the late 50s after moving up from the Bronx. What happened to that is an even bigger shame. At least there’s a possibility with our property that some rich city person who wants to put up a couple of luxury vacation homes might be able to buy the property (I wouldn’t be surprised if the land is worth more than the house) before the market crashes.

      • Lackadaisical

I hope you’re able to sell fast, and at a price that gets you what you need. I would have killed for a property like that.

      • Ted S.

It’s 37 acres in two lots, although most of that is on the side of the hill, and only accessible from one side. So a lot of it isn’t really usable.

On the other hand, the fact that the back side of it is up against state forest is a big plus — there’s not going to be any further development unless the state constitution is amended.

We’re also at the opposite end of the state forest from where the parking access is. So any new houses would probably hear some mountain bikers depending on how close to the property line they build, but that’s about it as far as human activity is concerned.

I don’t know how much the main lot sold for when my parents bought it back around 1970. The woodlot was bought at a tax auction in the early 80s, and cost my parents more than they wanted to pay, probably because other bidders thought they’d have easy access to it.

      • MikeS

It sounds like very desirable land, Ted. Hopefully you can sell fast and high and find something that works great for you and your dad. I’ll second Lack’s declaration of you being a good kid. I’m hoping you end up even happier in the new place.

      • KSuellington

Hope you get the price you’re looking for T.

I just find it funny that those I know who were ultra careful (and not in any risk groups) all got it at one point or another. I’m still surprised it took this long as I said at the beginning of the whole mess that pretty much everyone is going to at least be exposed to it sooner or later.

    • Lackadaisical

We’ve likely all got the vid too. Wife has been coughing like mad, and we can barely sleep. Very few symptoms otherwise, but it keeps lingering.

      • grrizzly

My partner and I have been together for 17 years. I don’t recall us having a cold at the same time. I had no symptoms whatsoever when he got covid this January. Unsurprisingly, he had none and testing negative when I got covid five months later.

      • Lackadaisical

I very rarely get sick, but this had me down for one day the first time I got it. Second time, nothing but coughing. I never tested, so I’m just guessing based on my wife’s previous positive test and the similarity of symptoms this time.

    • MikeS

That is kick-ass, KSue! Good for you. (Whitney, not the ‘Vid 😉)

  17. Tundra

My comments can’t make it through the gauntlet.

    Have a great week Glibfitters.

  18. EvilSheldon

Beautiful weather here in the nation’s capital. I got up early today and drove down to Lexington Park to shoot a USPSA match. Of course I had a squib during my first stage, so that kinda sucked, but I crushed the rest of the match. I’ve been working a lot on movement and set-ups, and it’s paying off in my scores. Came in fourth overall (third, really – one guy was shooting a rifle in a pistol match). Zeroing stages hurts.

Fried shrimp, crab balls, several 22oz. beers, and a nap later, and I’m feeling almost human again.

On the exercise front, this was a deload week, so not much going on there. Focused on good form, yadda yadda. I also started adding some assistance work to the major lifts. I’m happy to note that 30 (assisted) pullups and 30 (assisted) dips left me with only very minor soreness the day after.

    • Not Adahn

You came in third with a zero stage? Buh?

      • EvilSheldon

Like I said, I crushed the other five stages.

I did that once–you just have to shake it off.

When I shot the Limited Nationals back in the mists of time, I zeroed a stage on the first day I –I can’t remember the exact circumstances, maybe had a malfunction, maybe ran out of ammo–and was pretty upset about it. But I kept doing my best in the subsequent stages.

It paid off–halfway through the second day, a runner came and summoned me to the Match Director–they told me no one had signed my scoresheet–the RO forgot to ask for my signature, and didn’t sign it himself, so by the rules I got a reshoot of that stage, which I proceeded to crush.

At the time I was in the middle of C class, and my overall score for the match was high-B class, so I ended up immediately being boosted into the middle of B Class by the major match status.

About a billion degrees, and I’ve been up in the attic wiring new lights and fans and fixing some issues with the insulation. I think I’ll throw all those clothes out. Fiberglass is scary.

Finally done in the attic, hopefully, skipped my workout this weekend to take advantage of the cooler temps in the attic during the early morning. Still feel like I got a decent workout stooping around and reaching up.

    • KSuellington

For close to 5 years, from 17 onwards, I worked for my dad blowing and rolling out insulation in attics, most with crawl spaces, and some with 18 inches or less of space. I truly think I have done work that is at least as shitty as some of the crappiest jobs generally done in this country. It sucked, hard. Th plus side is it gave me a certain stoicism towards crappy work. It made caddying, range cart driving and working in restaurants feel easy by comparison.

      • Ted S.

My dad only offered me easier extra money by doing things with him like setting up/taking down scaffolding, and running wire through conduit when it needed one pair of hands at each end. That was enough to make me not want to do the trades for a living.

      • Lackadaisical

It’s fun to do occasionally, but I can see how it would get tiresome and pretty repetitive if you specialized in just one thing. I’m way too slow to make my living doing it.

      • Zwak, who counted all his blessings, and counted only one.

When I was 15, I spent a summer replacing wooden piers with concrete pier blocks in a crawl space only I could get into. I think my mother paid me minimum wage for that (it was her rental house), and you are right, it makes most tough jobs seem laughable in comparison.

      • Mojeaux

It took one full summer of my dad doing road construction like his father did for him to decide a degree in Russian history was preferable.

    • Don escaped Texas

      Fiberglass

on a job around fiberglass, I find out what my guys will require in the way of extra cash and add that to my bid

      • Lackadaisical

Then I’m glad I am fairly handy. It is a legit difficulty to work around. I tried to leave no skin showing. Tucking pants into boots, gloves over my shirt… Wrists still got a little itchy a time or two when I got careless.

      • Gustave Lytton

Tyvek full body suit helps some.

    • MikeS

Attic work sucks even in nice weather. Add in heat and fiberglass…ugh. Miserable.

      • KSuellington

Yup, sweating balls in a 110 degree crawl space while covered in blow in fiberglass is no bueno.

Thanks Mike, that mountain was on my list for a while. I’m stoked that I did it with a great group of 4 old friends.

You mentioned Anchor Steam in a beer thread a few weeks back. While I’ve known of it for years, this time I was determined to get a hold of some. My D&SIL lives in the Twin Cities and they brought me a 6 pack when they were up a few weeks ago. I really liked it. A great, “easy drinking” beer. And being an SF native made it taste extra good. If I ever get back there, let’s have one at the brewery.

      • rhywun

I bought a sixer after that.

        It’s good, but… man, I just prefer a lager. I’m a basic beer bitch.

      • MikeS

You aren’t much of a beer drinker at all, are you? Was thinking you’re more of a mixed drink guy.

      • rhywun

        Correct.

I often find beer too filling but I like one or two once in a while.

      • KSuellington

Absolutely Mike, we will definitely toss back a few if you make it out West. Yeah, it has always been one of my favs as when I was in high school I toured the brewery (with, no lie, an ID that I bought on Market Street that said I was Angus Young from Ft Lauderdale) and got to drink at their bar afterwards and meet the owner Fritz Maytag. I’m a big fan of malty tasting beers that still have a bit of brightness in them and that delivers. They make an excellent porter and the first US IPA of the modern era that is excellent also, Liberty Ale.

      • MikeS

Angus Young. That is awesome. 🤘🏻

Next on my request list from the kids is Liberty Ale…and another six (or twelve) of Anchor Steam.

      • KSuellington

I thought you’d like that detail. Liberty is closer to what most would now consider a pale ale in taste, it is most certainly not a hop bomb, which is nice. I’m kind of sad that the brewery got bought by a big conglomerate as they changed the classic labeling of all their beers that I used to love so much. It looks way more generic now in my opinion.

      • l0b0t

I really like the Anchor beers. The Anchor Porter is quite nice as well.

      • Lackadaisical

        …’110 degrees’

Nah, this had to be hotter, it was almost 100 degrees outside the afternoon I was working on it. Literally felt like an oven walking up the stairs to the attic. I think I spent ten or fifteen minutes up there that time, finished what I could and needed to then came right back down.
, Drank two liters of water after that.

They don’t want my blood anyway. Not a big deal.

    • MikeS

‘It is nonsensical and it makes me angry because there are vulnerable people waiting for blood, including children, and in desperate need of help. But they’ve been denied my blood because of the obligation to answer a question that can’t possibly be answered.’

Wrong. It can be answered, and the answer is a simple “no”. I know being a culture warrior is a fulltime job for some people, but give it a fucking rest once in awhile. You acknowledging that vulnerable people need your blood while you make a stand on a stupid form is asinine.

      • rhywun

The implication seems to be that the state used to print separate boy and girl and/or birthing-age and not birthing-age forms. He should be happy that they’ve stopped wasting money on that.

      • MikeS

My thought, too. They use one form. It asks all pertinent questions. Move on with your life.

    • Zwak, who counted all his blessings, and counted only one.

Fuck ’em. I can’t give blood on drs orders, and my son can only bank blood for himself anyway.

90 minutes of walking in the heat today. Pace is up, energy level is up, I’m feeling better than I have in a long time.

I’m trying to focus on staying hydrated and eating enough fat while staying adkins-ish. When I check those two boxes, I don’t find myself reaching for apples and bananas and mixed nuts.

Weight isn’t really moving, which is a bit frustrating, but not really a huge deal. I tried to communicate that to my wife, but it didn’t go over well. Her personal trainer side came out and she snapped at me for seeking out the negative while making so much progress. I probably deserved it.

I’m still struggling with some days where I have a hard time controlling my appetite. Yeah, eating a few fruit and a couple slices of cheese isn’t the end of the world, but I’d like to eliminate that and only eat when it’s meal time plus maybe one fruit a day. Fat and water help.
