Mrs. S was going on about the Jan 6 hearings last night. My response: The 2020 election did reveal a big threat to democracy, but not the one everyone thinks. The real threat is that, in a country of 330 million people, after 18 months and $1B of campaigning, the best we can do is a choice between Donald Fucking Trump or Joe Fucking Biden. THAT’s the problem.

What if the ineptitude of our leaders is actually our strength?
For instance, our benign hegemony might no longer be considered benign with competent leadership. Inserting spies into the US government is child’s play, so we’re an open book to other nations. Consider Swalwell’s honey pot, Hillary’s emails, and so on. Other countries get an inside look at our leaders, and realize that they’re just a bunch of dopes they don’t need to fear. And the Pax Americana rolls on.
Well, you have a point. Pax Romana wasn’t terribly peaceful, either.

“I divide my officers into four groups. There are clever, diligent, stupid, and lazy officers. Usually two characteristics are combined. Some are clever and diligent — their place is the General Staff. The next lot are stupid and lazy — they make up 90 percent of every army and are suited to routine duties. Anyone who is both clever and lazy is qualified for the highest leadership duties, because he possesses the intellectual clarity and the composure necessary for difficult decisions. One must beware of anyone who is stupid and diligent — he must not be entrusted with any responsibility because he will always cause only mischief.”
I worry that we have a critical mass of stupid and diligent in DC.

Hawaii’s volcanic environments contain a rich array of mysterious microbes, new research this week has found. Scientists say that the islands’ lava caves and other structures created by volcanic activity have unique, diverse, and still uncharacterized communities of bacteria living inside them.
The thing that impressed me the most when I visited Hawai’i for the first time was how many buildings were quarried from the local volcanic stone instead of being made from concrete or whatever. Even the public restrooms at the park. I guess that’s why they call them lavatories.

When my bro and I were still in high school, pops took us down to Ensenada for a long weekend. We each bought a switchblade and my dad freaked cuz they’re illegal in Cali. When we crossed back he actually declared the knives to the border patrol agent, who could have cared less, and let us in unmolested. I know pops was hoping the blades would be confiscated to teach us a lesson. I was surprised when he himself didn’t take them away.
The most effective way to get something past Customs (if one hypothetically needed to do that) is to walk up to them and open your luggage and show them that you bought something like a pack of batteries on your trip and “…look I filled out the paper even though it wasn’t worth much but I wanted to make sure..”

Former Trump White House aide Steve Bannon was found guilty Friday of two counts of contempt of Congress after a trial in federal court in Washington, D.C.
Jurors deliberated for less than three hours before convicting Bannon of willfully failing to comply with subpoenas demanding his testimony and records, which were issued last September by the House select committee investigating the Jan. 6, 2021, riot at the U.S. Capitol by supporters of then-President Donald Trump.
He faces a minimum punishment of 30 days in jail, and a maximum of one year when he is sentenced on Oct. 21. He also faces a fine in the range of $100 to a maximum of $100,000

Are you telling me the committee lacks the lawful authority to subpoena witnesses?
The Democrats, in a half-hearted attempt at bipartisanship, promised that there would be 13 members on the Committee, five of whom would be Republicans. An 8-5 split on the Committee doesn’t reflect the actual ratio of Democrats to Republicans in the House, but we have grown accustomed to Pelosi’s disregard of institutional norms of ratios reflecting the make-up of the House.
The promise by Pelosi turned out to be untrue because when Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy named his five nominees to the Committee, Pelosi booted two of them off. The other three Republicans rightfully rejected participating in the witch-hunt in protest.
In response, Pelosi appointed two former Republicans, Liz Cheney and Adam Kinzinger, to fill the Committee. These two have a more virulent strain of Trump Derangement Syndrome than any of the Far Left in Congress. And, that’s really saying something.
In a just world with a rule of law or the upside down wonderland where private individuals are property of the US government?
Congressional subpoena power is limited to government employees related to their employment or use of their office and contractors for the scope of their contracts. Everyone else can tell them to fuck right off with impunity. They are the hired help, not masters.

The cat was in the backyard underbrush when suddenly there was a bit of a dust up happening there. A young cottontail bunny shot out of the brush and went straight over the edge of the pool ~splash!~
Bunny doggy(?) paddled in the pool, attempting to get out, which was impossible with the vertical face 4-5 inches high between the water and the pavement. Cat came over and tried to hook the bunny under one arm.
Fortunately for bunny, husband was in the pool and scooped the bunny into the net we use for leaf removal. He let bun-bun go in one of the grassy common areas in the neighborhood.

I had one of my most miserable trips in Japan to Tottori.
I spent several hours on a diesel train going across Hokkaido in the wintertime, no snow however, just rain and cold. I then met with a customer who I had to bring bad news to (a price increase). He proceeded to yell at me in Japanese and bang on the table for 2 hours. We then drank and ate at a subpar restaurant, slept, then I took the train back to Osaka for my flight home the next day.
That is miserable. Why did you fly home from Osaka and not Tokyo?
On the plus side getting yelled at in a language that isn’t native is a bit funny. I tend not to give a shit and find it humorous. Same thing in English puts my blood pressure to the roof.
Pretty much the shittiest train ride in Japan tops the best in the US.

Gah! Then FedGov would push for mandatory abortions… and infanticide… and homicide of all 18 or under…..
The face, and udders, of the Kakistocracy is Nancy Pelosi.
What an udder nightmare.
Yes, he really dugg into that.
The progressive dream, everyone sucking the govt teat.
Agreed. In theory those were supposed to be the “best” candidate from each party.
Pax?
That’s what I was thinking the other day. Not terribly peaceful.
Compared to what?
It’s a positive love in out there.

When I first saw that I thought it was the scrotum of something from SugarFree’s fiction.
It still could be.

Does anyone here have a recommendation for a good machete/survival saw type tool to carry in a vehicle or airplane in case of being stranded?

I keep a PET with me at all times, and enough emergency equipment to survive 6 days easily, winter or summer
Watch the local laws on knives. Double edged blades are often illegal.
It’s a long story, Mother!
The most effective way to get something past Customs (if one hypothetically needed to do that) is to walk up to them and open your luggage and show them that you bought something like a pack of batteries on your trip and “…look I filled out the paper even though it wasn’t worth much but I wanted to make sure..”
Customs guy: “Yeah, get out of here.”
I wanted to bring jamón ibérico from Madrid once. You cannot bring meat products from abroad. I wasn’t afraid of Customs guys, I was afraid of Customs dogs.

Sounds like the “scout rifle” of knives to hear them talk about it.
Here ya go
I would buy a bunch of cheap ones and put them in every vehicle, home, garage. Buy 10 for the price of one really good one and then buy one really good one that can be sharpened and used for years of use.
Yeah, I was looking for some relatively inexpensive options that can be put in an emergency pack and left in each vehicle. I don’t want to have to think about whether my emergency kit is complete before I go out.
If you want relatively inexpensive, get a Mora Kansbol 13505 bushcraft knife and a Corona RazorTooth folding hand saw. You’ll be out around fifty bucks per vehicle.
I think Gerber has a cheap (read Chinese) model. I keep on in the truck.
Remember that saw blades need not be rigid; I’ve seen survival saws which are made of wire with a ring on each end. Those are sometimes included in the hollow handle of survival knife kits.
Are you looking for something to get out of the vehicle with? Bushcraft knife? Gathering firewood/building temporary shelter? Something else?
How about a regular machete?
Caving is fun, lava? No thanks
The idea is to let the lava cool before you go exploring in the tubes. This is a fun place to try it.
Of course, some of the best spelunking doesn’t involve a cave at all.

We must make an example of him
Former Trump White House aide Steve Bannon was found guilty Friday of two counts of contempt of Congress after a trial in federal court in Washington, D.C.
21. He also faces a fine in the range of $100 to a maximum of $100,000
Bow down, peasant, or face the consequences.
Third world banana kakistocracy.
But I have nothing but contempt of congress. I’m not going to prison am I? I’m too pretty for that, they’ll eat me alive.
Become a trusty? Jailhouse lawyer?
He should get the exact same penalty as Eric Holder got for his contempt of Congress.
My thoughts exactly. When they found Holder in contempt, I was ready for some real consequences.
And nothing else happened.
That’s exactly the problem. Holder should have been punished and so should Bannon.
Bannon has done nothing wrong. There’s no reason to punish him. He ignored a subpoena issued by a sham J6 committee.
Are you telling me the committee lacks the lawful authority to subpoena witnesses?
Yes, if the committee itself is illegitimate.
The January 6 Committee is an Illegitimate Operation
In a just world with a rule of law or the upside down wonderland where private individuals are property of the US government?
Congressional subpoena power is limited to government employees related to their employment or use of their office and contractors for the scope of their contracts. Everyone else can tell them to fuck right off with impunity. They are the hired help, not masters.
No congressional committee should have the lawful authority to demand a citizen appear before them with threat of violence if they don’t. Ignoring congress should never be a crime.
Or what Gustave said, more eloquently.
Lets be real here.
Is there anybody that doesn’t hold Congress in contempt?
I’d wear that charge as a badge of honor. I’d most certainly put it on my resume.
It’s Friday in the new non-normal. I’ll be heading out for a bike ride shortly, but wanted to provide the Zoom/Happy Hour/Last week planning link for everyone. I’ll kick it off at 20:00 Eastern.

Now all they need to do is get people to talk on film…
I had found a dead bunny a few months ago and thought “surely Felix isn’t skilled enough to get a bunny.” Looks like I was wrong about that.
Fuzzy murder machines.
Domestic cats, particularly the larger ones, can take a bunny. A friend was regularly gifted with dead or almost-dead rabbits by her cat.
Felix is 12 lbs, but it’s all lithe and athletic, no fat on him.
I had a 8 lb tortie who could take down squirrels and rabbits. She didn’t even have front claws.
My little tortie goes for bigger rabbits. I wish she’d do squirrels. I hate it when she kills bunnies.
Torties seem to have cornered the Barn Cat market. They are extremely good hunters and can struggle through hard times.
My tortie was a bit of an idiot, but man could she hunt.
You’d be shocked at how a cat’s instincts take over for hunting prey. Especially, for mamma cats. Every time a mamma cat has a litter, they turn into a hunting machine. Nothing like waking up to a bird, rabbit or bat in the house. Yes, bats.
Felix likes to bring live lizards into the house, not to present as trophies or offerings, but to play with for hours.
I think he might do well with a companion kitty.
Haha! Then you’ll have 2, 3 or 4 cats all trying to get the lizard out from under the couch when they lose it. My cats used to love to play with the lizards, but only ate the tails. Weirdo cats.
Bean, my Siamese bird murderer, has recently switched to field mice. She has been leaving them by the fire pit for me to find with the lawnmower.

Hard to decide if he’s stupid, and just doesn’t understand the distinction, or evil and just doesn’t care.
“Both” is likely the correct answer.
He’s not stupid; he’s counting on the mass of voters to be stupid.
I always wonder if the pro-abortion folks who claim to be all about women’s health ever consider the female fetus a life worth saving.
Also, I’m never saying “pro-choice” again. I’m saying “pro-abortion”, and even considering tossing in “embryo-phobic” if the opportunity arises.
Oh, they are even denying that it’s a life form of any sort.
Counting on the mass of voters to be stupid has worked well for him so far. That and his dreamy good looks. I still remember a party where some of the ladies were squirming in their seats talking about how they had been at some event with him.
But he’s not even polite. Clinton and the Kennedys were IMO a bit odd-looking (jolie laide) but probably seemed much handsomer when they were being charming. I don’t respond to index-finger lectures about how I too am traffic.
This is true. He is a condescending ass. Even some true believer democrats were pissed off by his repeated violations of his Covid decrees.
He’s not charming at all; quite the contrary.
But they will still vote for him if he’s their nominee. Anyone but a GOP or libertarian candidate!!

I’m not counting on any one place. There is plenty he has done that his competitors will put in their commercials.
Oh, great. More “investigations” outside the justice system, under which at least the accused has rights.

“The latest? The Nakagawa Shuzo sake brewery in Tottori, Japan”
Depends if you like trains. Could be outfuckingstanding and punch another one off the list.

Draining the swamp is great. Replacing the swamp with your own swamp, not so much.
Nope. You absolutely need to bring your own people and place them in every available position while firing as many government bureaucrats as possible. Everything else is a recipe for disaster as we saw during the Trump administration.
I interpreted TOK’s comment as meaning the only way to drain the swamp is to eliminate positions, programs, and agencies. Perhaps even entire departments.
You need to have your own people who will work on implementing these things. One President is not enough to eliminate anything. You need people who will know how to shut down programs and positions without immediately violating laws and existing regulations. And, of course, Congressional Republicans–with a couple of exceptions–are on the side of the administrative state.
👆
This is also why it’s probably impossible to do and collapse is the ultimate answer.
Trump didn’t eliminate any departments or lower the headcount.
Lowering headcount is a Clinton initiative.
The Department of Education has information that will lead to the conviction of Hilary Clinton.
Worth a shot.
I like it.
What does stupidity of Team Red voters have to do with Schedule F? At least Schedule F is a plausible way of fighting against the administrative state. That’s more than one can say about the other potential GOP presidential candidates.

He makes me laugh. He’s a comedian, so that’s all I require of him.

Bill Burr has a lot of insight on thorny problems. His wife is African American so his pieces on race are always good for laughs and for reflection.
I’m on vacation and in a different time zone, so just now going through links – regarding this mornings Houston ATM shooter, I think he should be charged with manslaughter, but if he is/has shown remorse, I don’t think it does anyone any good to lock him up, give him probation. Also, he should be sued and will lose. You can’t pay a civil loss if you are locked up. And while money won’t bring the child back, locking the guy up for 10 years does even less towards providing justice for the family.
That’s a fair take.
Thoughts on removing his right to a firearm? Is that something that happens in Texas for any felony?
