Friday night I was jumping rope to finish off the week. I was only supposed to jump for ten minutes. I did something to my right knee and wanted to baby it a bit. I put on some Anthrax and got to it. I jumped for seventeen minutes and only stopped because I had this feeling I was well past the ten minutes I planned. What was going on?
Some experts believe that music acts as a distractor. Distractors are known to moderate pain levels, which means you will be less likely to notice pain during a workout. Those not listening to music might experience the intensity of their exercise more, feeling more tired or sore while exercising. Those listening to music will be distracted by it and might not notice any discomfort or strain on their body.
In The Social and Applied Psychology of Music, authors North and Hargreaves suggest that music distracts from the pain you endure during a workout through competing stimuli, meaning both music and the pain from your exercise are competing against each other. It’s easier to forget about or ignore pain or fatigue when you’re distracted by a song.
Studies show that faster-paced music tends to help improve athletic performance when a person engages in low-to-moderate level exercise, either by increasing distance travelled, pace, or repetitions completed. For example, a 2006 study that looked at the effect of music on the selection of treadmill speed found that while listening to fast-paced music, participants increased their pace and distance travelled without becoming more tired. Other studies drew similar conclusions, suggesting that listening to music with more beats per minute can enhance physical performance during low-to-moderate level exercise.
Several studies have shown how the exact tempo, as measured in beats per minute, affects one’s level of exercise. These studies determined that the ideal tempo necessary for maximum performance depends on the type of exercise. A 2011 study showed that in order to achieve the best performance for cycling (which was calculated by measuring exercise intensity through heart rate), the preferred tempo is 125 – 140 beats per minute (bpm). A study published in 2014 showed that the best music tempo for enhanced performance on the treadmill is 123 – 131 bpm. A plausible reason for why different types of exercise have different ideal tempos is related to a person’s ability to keep time with the beat of the music, synchronizing strides or pedaling to the beat of the music. Since pace differs on the treadmill versus the exercise bike or elliptical, music of different tempos is needed to achieve ideal performance for various workouts.
The lesson Science™ teaches us is to turn up the volume and rip off the knobs.
Mostly related: thanks to slumbrew I have become a fan of Jabra earbuds. I bought a pair specifically to use at the gym and for running and jumping. I’ve tried to use the jumping but the come out to frequently. I haven’t even tried them running because I’m afraid of losing one. Has anyone found a replacement earbud tip that effectively secures them? I’m looking at these but can’t tell if they work or are just snake oil.
Can’t do workouts with earphones in. I don’t mind most of the music they play in my current gym – also flexible to change stations, etc.
My current cardio/knee PT involves intermittent running – and I normally set up my phone with a metronome of 165 bpm to keep pace at 4.5 or 4.8 mph.
Nice article, thanks for sharing.
Amazed how you keep finding new things to comment on. I haven’t been very glib fit lately, spending way to much time trying to fix my house up… Staying to hate that excuse.
I haven’t been very glib fit lately, spending way to much time trying to fix my house up
Counts as exercise to me. I’ve been laying down flooring*, cutting trees up, and working on fencing. It’s been tougher than my exercise routine.
Have to listen to music while working out or working on the house/property. I got a pair of 3M ear protection headphones that stream music from my phone while on the tractor or a chainsaw.
*I bought around 40 boxes of laminate click-lock for four rooms last Fall. Am now down to the very end of the last room and it’s going to be damn close on if I’ll need to order one more box to finish and wait 4-6 weeks for delivery. Ugh.
click lock flooring is fun compared to anything else you could be doing for floors.
I’ve been doing fencing, and plumbing and drywall and electrical and tiling… Initially it was harder than my workouts. Oh and threw out ~25 yards of garbage from the renos. Just finished cleaning the old apartment, which was fun too.
Still need to do a lot of that work, kind of 80% done with a lot of things.
Thanks Lack.
I MUST have music to be able to walk any distance without misery, especially if I want to get it done quickly. I also need a destination. I should post my playlist.
True, now that I’ve started with Spotify, i could use my headphones on my phone for some walks – may try for the 2+ miles to the local breweries in the next week or so (when I get home).
I specifically choose music with a beat that matches my fast-walking pace. Too slow, I start tripping over my feet. Too fast, I start noticing that I’m huffing and puffing while the music is playing. The point is to not notice I’m huffing and puffing, even though I am.
Where does everything Nikki Sixx related fall into your range?

I like podcasts to keep my mind busy.
Yep, that’s my choice as well.
This. As much as I love music, I’ve found that workout time – most recently on one of the Y’s NuStep cross trainers – is the ideal time to listen to spoken-word audio. On the SiriusXM app, I can pull up the previous evening’s episode of Tucker or some podcast, and with the Libby app I found via my local library’s website, I can borrow and listen to audiobooks. This works better for me than trying to listen while commuting, as I fear traffic will distract me from the content or, worse, the content will distract me from traffic.
On the elliptical I can sometimes watch a Netflix show on my phone if I’m really engrossed in it. Otherwise it’s the metal playlist.
Gym elliptical in cville each had their own buit-in TV. Worked great to watch an ep of TV with CC (normally Bones or CSI depending on time of day).
Chafed!
After listening to podcasts while lifting for quite awhile, I switched back to music. Damn, what a difference! It doesn’t need to be heavy – some days it’s New Wave, some days Southern Rock. It kind of depends on how I’m feeling that day.
I still prefer podcasts for my longer solo walks. It definitely makes the miles disappear faster.
Great songs! It’s sad that after that album Aerosmith became unlistenable. I mean, I know it was healthier for them to ditch the drugs, but their art definitely suffered.
From a better, more stoned time.
I had a shitty GlibFit week. For reasons. Onwards and upwards, though!
Have a great week GlibFitters!
Same here. I’m doing the zone 2 cardio thing, and stared with podcasts but the workouts seem easier and go by quicker with music.
Maffetone? How are you programming it?
Just 2.5 hours a week, either ski erg or bike, usually 30 or 45 minutes. Heart rate under 130.
Any HIIT other than hockey?
This was their first album after they cleaned up. It was followed by Permanent Vacation and Pump. Pump is one of my favorite Aerosmith albums. After that, well…
Yeah, I guess PV and Pump were ok.
I think they recorded this one still fucked up, though.
What a terrible lifestyle to try to stay healthy. Not just the sex, drugs and rock n roll thing. Every time I travel it takes me awhile to get back to normal. I can’t imagine being on the road that much. I’d be a whale with a heroin problem.
PV is awesome. Pump is meh, after that they sucked. Similar path as Def Leppard.
I can’t believe you said that about Pump. I thought I knew you, man.
*double checks the Pump song list
OK, it’s better than “meh”, but it isn’t as good as Permanent Vacation.
Earbuds don’t work for me, which is a pity because I occasionally get sent high end ones. So depending on how dorky I’m feeling, I either use over-ear noise canceling Bluetooth or on-ear wired. I don’t need fast music to set a good pace, I just need music that will entrance me. Today was a mix of primarily James McMurtry, Warren Zevon, Ray Wylie Hubbard, Drive-By Truckers, and Gov’t Mule, chosen for me by Amazon’s algorithm.
Oh, and did I modestly mention that I’m within half a pound of my end-of-July milestone? Probably not, I’m too modest. Downside: I wanted to wear a suit for the first part of next weekend’s event because SP loved the way I looked in a suit. I tried it on today and it was ridiculously too large. Ditto my other suits. I guess it’s shorts and a t-shirt.

Congrats! One hell of an accomplishment.
I guess it’s shorts and a t-shirt.
Suits are overrated, anyway.

Congratulations on the weight loss. Have you considered going to a tailor to take your suit in?
It’s a college town, but maybe he’ll get lucky and there’s still a tailor about.
A good one could get it done in a week…
That will have to be done, but the nearest one is a good haul away. Like Rochester.
That is an almost perfect playlist.
needs moar John Prine, and SAHB
More John Price is never a bad idea. I never really got in to Alex Harvey, maybe I should give them more of a listen.
*Prine*, autocorrect, Jesus titty-fucking Christ…
SAHB is an acquired taste and he/it doesn’t really fit in with the rest of OMWC playlist but I’m a true believer so I tossed it/them’s in there just because.
Replace SAHB with Chris Knight, that would be a good fit, or maybe Paul Thorn,

My fave off that wonderful album.
Thanks, Chafed. Good topic. Music, for me, is a must, whether writing or exercising or whatever. I love it.
Potters Field is a good song, but my personal preference wrt John Bush is Armored Saint, with Symbol of Salvation being a personal favorite.
Ear buds, personally can’t stand them. Prefer headphones.
*insert old guy rant*
goddam kids and their wearing one stoopit earbud at all hours of the day don’t know why they bother, goddam kids can’t hear what you’re saying anyways ‘Hunh?’ is the goddamdest response I ever did see, besides, stereo is infinitely superior to mono anyways why not just go back to 45’s and a tiny little goddam record player now get off my lawn goddammit

My husband has taken to walking around with one earbud in to listen to sportstalk and in case someone calls. It annoys me a bit. It’s starting to annoy me more than a bit.
For me, it happens at work. They don’t pay attention, and can’t hear what’s happening around them. I’m just waiting for someone to get hurt in a completely preventable accident.
Also, if I hear the excuse, “I’m bored,” one more time, I’m going to lose my cherub like demeanor and rend my garments.
Last time I worked in an environment like that, when I did big box logistics at the DC, earbuds were strictly verboten. Forklifts are pretty quiet when they are electric, and you can get fucked up pretty bad by one.
My kid is pissy that FedEx is getting rid of the “good” forklifts and changing them out for “stupid” forklifts, electric, which are slower and have difficult steering, and is still expected to get as much work done with slow forklifts as with the “good” forklifts.
I agree John Bush’s best work is with Armored Saint. For whatever reason, The Sound of White Noise is my favorite Anthrax album. I think Bush is a big part of it.
Picked up another 5 pounds on Deadlift Day today. Up to 215 pounds, 5 straight reps. GAINZZ, brah.
I don’t listen to music during my short workouts. Mrs. Dean does during her longer, harder workouts (seriously, her daily workouts would snap my spine). Once I go part-time/ retired, my workouts will get longer and I bet I start putting some tunes on.

“This year, Comic-Con’s COVID safety protocols included proof of either full vaccination or a negative test taken within 72 hours of attending the event, as well as mandatory masking – and your cosplay mask didn’t count. For the most part, fans didn’t mind the long lines for health checks, and appreciated Comic-Con’s efforts to keep people safe.”
🙄
“For the most part”
The rest were mostly peaceful.
your cosplay mask didn’t count
Only genuine cloth or paper masks will be accepted.
Pass.
Do not feed the insanity, people.
PAX has been requiring them for their cons as well. The girlfriend and I were looking at going to Unplugged again (the board game focused one), but noped out once they’re requiring proof of vax and masks at all time.
Are we also seeing the continuing tradition of people skipping ComicCon in favor of good cons?
William Shatner appeared this year. He laid into a fan he couldn’t understand because of his mask. 91 year old William Shatner wanted him to take it off.
What kind of deal with the devil does that guy have.
He must have a lot of pennies.
Nice. The way better Shat episode.
The Big Giant Head has no need to deal with the Devil.
at least the neg test has some utility, but requiring the vax is completely imbecilic.
Ah well, I haven’t been to Comic-con in 15 years, though I went six years in a row. It used to be a blast, but then it got so huge, selling out in five minutes, and so overhyped, I couldn’t stand it. No, I’m not going to spend overnight outside the convention center just to get a seat in the hall to watch on the same monitor I can watch from home.
I did a D&D/boardgame con decades ago in my hometown – dragged there by my buddy and it was sort of fun even though I was way too shy to join in any of the fun.
I’ve been to exactly one DragonCon in the 30 plus years I’ve lived in the ATL. Never again. Hot, stinky, overcrowded, and a waste of day. We saw two panels we wanted to see. Sat in line for 3 others for over an hour each but did not make the cut.
For reasons unknown, a CD of Andean might sic came into my possession over 20 years ago. I never listen to it EXCEPT while on an elliptical or stationary bike. It’s instrumental only. In my brain, that music and exercise go together.
My favorite headphones are Bluetooth ones built into a fabric headband. I have one set on the charger at all times.
“Andean music” not might sic.
So you don’t like might sic?

Ink Spots and I’m dead!
Yup, that clinched the pick.
I’d live to listen to music while riding about, but I prefer being able to hear the cars coming up behind me. I also don’t want to be the asshole toting along a speaker along, making everyone else hearing my music. The spin classes I go to in winter all use BPM to help people get into the cadence that’s being asked. I usually ignore it for the most part, and just focus on getting my cadence where I want/need it to be.
“Toting along a speaker along” is probably exercise all by itself.
Not if it’s a WONDERBOOM speaker. Those things are amazing for how small they are.
Unfortunately my husband is the asshole who brings it poolside, when all I want to hear is the wind in the leaves and the rippling water.

WONDERBOOMs are great if not inflicted upon the innocent.
“I also don’t want to be the asshole toting along a speaker along”
We’ve got a few people at my gym who bring their speakers to the hot tub or into the steam room.
And they make it back outside alive?
Meh, I’m old and they’re bigger than me.
But, I am, sort of, looking for a new gym. I’m actually thinking the local Y might be the place.
*sigh* Not even a typo, just rewriting on the fly,
I’ve seen a couple of people with a bluetooth speaker in their jersey pocket, on a back shelf, or mounted on their handlebars out and about. They have almost always been the asshole cyclists who ignore road rules, common courtesy, and make the rest of us look bad. I’ve also seen helmets with built in bluetooth, which seems like both a terrible idea, and not where I want the money in my helmet to go.
It would be a shame if the speaker fell in the water.
I use bike conduction headphones from Aftershocks (or however they spell it). They don’t plug up my ear holes so I can still here cars and Steve Smith sneaking up behind.
I am up to being able to do most short walks without a cane, but I tire easily. If I have to do anything serious, cane it is or in very rare instances the walker. My gait is getting much better, I can pee like a normal person(!)* and I am bending and lifting, albeit small amounts as I haven’t been released for 10lbs yet. Of course, I have kinda ignored that on occasion, like when I found a dude selling all sorts of old machinist tooling.
But it needs to be over the ear for me, when it comes to earphone-type things, I cannot do earbuds. My wife, on the other hand, constantly listens to audiobooks, and I have to SPEAK REAL LOUD to get her attention. Then again, I don’t want to be forced to listen to her books.
The lady Glibs are so glib they can pee standing up.
Glad you are getting better, Zwak.
They always undersell your ability to heal. I’m willing to bet that you are way further along than what they are telling you. Not saying go try to rip 400 off the floor, but…
“I can pee like a normal person(!)* ”
I was so proud and happy last year when I could do that.
“Mom! Mom! I can go just like Daddy and the big boys now”
Standing up to brush my teeth was a happy day as well.
I’ll always walk with a limp and a hip/ back pain but things could be so much worse. It wasn’t so long ago that things were a lot worse. Just have to admit that there are limits to some things. That being said I’m looking forward to getting back on the tread mill in a few days. Because of the handles it’s more like a walker and not nearly as tiring as plain old walking. Last winter running the snow blower wasn’t too tough but now I need to get back to being able to do that.
I put on some cds of old time ’50s/’60s stuff and groove. I really don’t hear or listen too much but it’s nice not to be alone. Occasionally some thing will jar me out of my stupor while I’m steppin’ out.
Are you gonna hit the weights again?
The Weider machine, Zep got my weights, the machine is safer at this point.
Resistance wins. However it happens.
Seconded
Treadmill tune for 4(20)

I actually have both of those on the tune box. That’s the kind of stuff that makes me want to walk.

Talked to an internet friend I haven’t talked to in a loooooooong time. She lives in LA. She was the first person to actually read my book and review it, when we were pretty much strangers. She liked my libertarian characters and sort of hinted she leaned that way. Anyway, she and I had a long chat today about the vidiocy, and she and I are completely simpatico. So nice to find someone like that in the wild.
I’m fortunate that I’m not doing anything that requires the Jabras to be super-secure. Those foam tips look like they should work, though that seems expensive for what they are.
Between vacations and Covid, I really fell off the exercise wagon. I really noticed the loss of endurance when I got back on the rower a couple weeks ago.
Back to doing 45 minutes sessions; back to an hour will be the next milestone.
45 yesterday and a quick 20 just now; slowly getting back to where I was.
I think they are expensive too. Unless they work as advertised. Then they are still expensive but worth it.

But especially the global warmists; they want you to turn off air conditioning, stop driving your car, quit eating meat, stop watering your lawn.
(Las Vegas just issued an ordinance limiting the size of future swimming pools in new construction.)
Don’t forget the people who want to control your speech and thought.
The old puritans had nothing on today’s – it’s just so pervasive in every corner now.
The prohibitionists are still among us as well.

/if you like sci-fi, give Fringe a watch
Yes, I liked that one. Is it available anywhere now?
Fringe is available on freevee (with ads, formerly IMDB.TV, owned by Amazon), as well as HBO Max. I’ve got the full run on DVD already, and managed to get the girlfriend to watch it. I asked her to commit to watching just the first episode with me. She immediately asked to watch the next.
I’ve been working through the second and third seasons of Evil, and have been irritated by it. The first season was wonderful in keeping everything questionable. The second and third season have gone heavily into the supernatural is real side of it.
I did watch some Fringe during the original run and liked it. Did it eventually go anywhere? I guess it did if you bought the box set.
But man I have so many other things to watch as it is.
It did. The first season is setting up the universe, things got really crazy in the later episodes. There’s some really nice callbacks and references later in the series. It started with monster of the week type episodes, and developed into a fairly deep story arc.
It was unfortunately aired on Fox, which meant they fucked with it at times (such as airing a discarded season 1 episode during season 2, featuring a character who died previously in the series). It also became a show you couldn’t miss many episodes without losing the story arc.
I remember getting bit by how they treated Alphas and said to myself I won’t let that happen again.
rhywun:
Alphas got screwed by Sci-Fi network, not Fox. That was another show I really enjoyed, as it was really well done. I was somewhat concerned that they linked it to the Eureka/Warehouse 13 universe which didn’t really seem to fit with what Alphas was doing.
Generic “they” – wasn’t blaming a specific network.
I never got hooked by Eureka or Warehouse 13.
I specified Fox, as they’re well known for screwing over sci-fi shows (such as Fringe, Firefly, and others).
I watched both. Eureka started out with some promise, but got… strange in the later seasons. Warehouse 13 I enjoyed as a strange Indiana Jones/X-Files type of a mash up.
In his latest special, Bill Burr helps people see that markets are all that matter: if feminists are a monolith (they aren’t, of course), why isn’t every WNBA game a sellout? If we want to obsess about collectives, guys aren’t bad for liking what they want; rather, gals are bad for not watching women’s sports.
I’ve argued a (somewhat) related thing about salary equity: it some woke genius wants to only hire women and pay them ten times the typical wages for their industry, well: giddyup….knock yourself out…it’s nothing to me……we look forward to reports of your progress!
FWIW, no one can ruin Oceans, James Bond, or Dr Who for me ’cause I don’t watch that shit, but, whatever melts their butter: markets will let you know.
The fact that markets work without central planning and that prices are signals is so bleeding obvious that it boggles my mind that so many humans are in total denial of it. Those same humans seem to understand natural selection and survival of the fittest; why does this other complex system (human transactional behavior) elude them??
same people: 3.6mm/year = 10 FOOT FLOODS IN MIAMI DID YOU SEE THE VIDEO OH THE HUMANITY!!!1!
Price signals work in an environment without pressure. The moment that someone feels something, anything, “must be done”, then price signals are useless to those people who wish to pressure the system.
Too many cars? Too many guns? Too few vegetarians? Too few Art History majors? Quick, put a lock on those things!
It doesn’t elude them but they do think they are clever and smart enough to work around it to get their way.
I can’t believe the BBC hasn’t taken that down.
I’d live to listen to music while riding about, but I prefer being able to hear the cars coming up behind me.

I made a really poor Gyudon…well, not really that bad. Shitake dashi just didn’t add the umph I was looking for.
I miss American fast food Yoshinoya
Try Niku jaga if you like gyudon. It’s easy and yummy.

That looks delicious.
Looks good. Gotta try that! I’ve been honing my dashi skils but surprisingly very little Japanese markets. All the Asian markets here are mostly leanimg towards Filipino ingredients.
Skyflakes are the superior saltine.
MIL puts a little Coca Cola in the broth. Tastes even better.
According to the health app on my iphone, I’ve been pretty damn GlibFit the last two weeks. I walked over 60 miles each week, mainly pushing a fertilizer spreader or lugging around a backpack sprayer killing weeds. I got another 60-80 miles in standing on the back of my 8′ boom sprayer. There was also a few days of trimming trees/shrubs and hauling brush. The kicker is 60-70% of the terrain I was working on is hilly and the past week it hit 90 all but one day with dew points in the 70’s most days. I did a lot of sweating, and my shorts looked like I pissed myself by end of every day.
I rarely listen to music when I work. I listen to books and podcasts all day. Tundra, I’ve been digging the Art of Manliness podcast. I decided to work my way through all the old episodes that sound interesting.
I’ve spent a shit ton of money over the years on listening devices. The wired ones rub on my face or get caught on something and rip, so stopped using them. I’ve tried all kinds of earbuds, including a couple really expensive brands, and they all fall out of my ear when sweating or get knocked out by a branch and get ruined in short order.
Then I found the OnePlus Bullets Wireless Z. They are a neckband style wireless bluetooth headphone. The beauty is they are magnetized, so to turn them off just connect them then slip under the shirt like wearing a necklace. If you need to switch to a bluetooth call, just unconnect the buds from inside the shirt and put them in your ears. They turn on automatically when you separate the earbuds. They also don’t rub on your face and usually stay attached around your neck if one slips out. They are also very comfortable in the ear and almost never fall out. I rarely get sore ears from wearing them, even with hearing protection ear muffs on. Oh, and they are relatively cheap at under $50.
I wore my first pair in every type of Wisconsin weather for almost two years. They still work for listening, but the mic gave out. That is almost unheard of for me working outside every day. Usually I go through 2-4 sets a year. Since they attach around the neck, they never get lost or misplaced.

I should get an endorsement check after reading my review. There is one downside to the earbuds though. Music doesn’t sound very good at all compared to nice ones like ipods or some of the bose ones I’ve had. Great for podcasts, books, and phone calls though.
Huh.
I have been buying OnePlus phones for years but never even considered the accessories. I am a Jaybird fan, but I better take a look at OP.
Thanks, Pud!
And I’m glad you are digging the AoM pods. There are so many good topics and he gets through them in an hour!
I like that the topics are all over the place with really interesting guests. He’s also a great interviewer. He’ll let a guest talk sometimes for 5 or more minutes without ever interrupting. Most of the topics are timeless, so the podcasts don’t get “old” like many that discuss more current events.
Maybe the best part of those OnePlus headphones is that they are always there. No need to think about them all day, other then putting them around my neck in the morning. Even when listening all day, I rarely have to recharge, and when I do it only takes a few minutes to get a few more hours out of them.
A music to energize you
Shopping done. New battery is in the truck. Yard is mowed and water is on. Dinner is finished. Calling it quits for today.
LOL watching the Dawson-or-GTFO Family Feud. The question – “name something the sight of which makes a woman emotional”.
Unbelievably problematic.
When a rapist is killed by his victim.
It was all girlie stuff like weddings and mice.
🙄
One thing to bear in mind is that these were the results of a survey of the general public at the time which the show aired. Plus they probably threw out any answers that would be deemed inappropriate for their broadcast slot.

Watching 1917.
Holy fuck is this an intense movie.
yes it is
*googles*
Never heard of it but sounds interesting.
I wasn’t impressed by 1917 after watching “They Shall Not Grow Old”. That was an intense WWI documentary. I most highly recommend it.
Mrs. Whiz and I liked 1917.
Mrs. Whiz didn’t see TSNGO, but I did and enjoyed it, too.
Adding that to my wish-list too.
I am going to relocate soon, I was hoping for Cali to see my kids, but Hell no!
Newsance us a nutjob, and 70k a year to live in a studio apartment? See ya

Anyway, good luck!

Bee on the money again.
Earbuds: I use some cheap ones that have the little hook that goes over the ear, otherwise they would fall right out.
I listen to audiobooks or podcasts if I go for a walk. I haven’t been to a gym since the vid happened, but when I used to go I would listen to audiobooks/podcasts on the stationary bike or rowing machine, then switch to music when I moved over to the weights. My weightlifting regimen now consists of picking up a dumbbell / kettlebell / resistance band and cranking out a few reps in my home office when I take a break from Teams calls or real work, so I don’t bother putting on music.
I just checked the “Gym” playlist I was using. It’s all dark psytrance, hard drum & bass, death metal, speed metal, 80’s punk/hardcore, and some 90’s metal-ish industrial.

When I read stuff like this, it really saps my motivation to do a good job for my employer.
Mr. Irrelevant is a “prize” given out informally by the NFL to the candidate that is drafted in the last mathematical draft position, typically 256 or so. Traditionally there is a huge feast in their honor, with friends and relatives in their honor.
Mr. Irrelevant, like many other draft picks, is rarely signed onto a contract after summer camp and team activities. However, exceptions rise to amuse us!!
2009’s Mr. Irrelevant was Ryan Succop, who overcame both his unfortunate surname and his standing as the 256’th draft pick to go on to earn a Super Bowl ring, some NFL kicker records, and a shit ton of cash.
Succop is a reminder that lemons can indeed be made into lemonade. Tasty, tasty Super Bowl winning lemonade. He is the first Mr. Irrelevant to win a SuperBowl ring.
He kicks off next month for Tampa Bay. Good luck, Mr. Irrelevant!!
Mornin peeps.

Third place takes first. No one tell Bro. He won’t take it well.
Why? seems like his story to me. He’s often third and rambling on about firsts.

Happy national wine and cheese day!!
Well then, I enjoyed National Tequila Day yesterday, so I will do wine and cheese today. Mornin’, Sean!
☕😃
Wake up, you slackers!
Why?
I gotta get ready for work.
*waves*
I still have ten minutes before I have to be out the door… nine now.
I’m up

Stupid garbage truck is so loud it wakes me up every Monday… I have no excuse for all the other days.

*bleep**bleep**bleep**bleep**bleep**bleep*
I knocked over my drink and it spilled on the mess of cables behind my work computer.
Somehow, there wasn’t a short and I mopped up most of it.
Pepsi Syndrome!
On the plus side, this happens so rarely that the previous work spillage incident is so long ago I can’t remember it.
Still not a pleasant way to start the day or the week. I hope everything’s much better from here on out!
Well, I’m holding up a bundle of cables so my fan can dry the desk underneath. I should have replenished my stocks of work napkins. I have them at home but keep forgetting to bring them into the office.
ah, found something to prop the cables up so I don’t have to hold them. 😁
My electric smoker grease tray overflowed on to my deck, so I have that to look forward to this afternoon.
Heh. I made a terrific impression on my current employer during my first code review with my manager by spilling coffee on my laptop due to nervousness/clumsiness/senescence. DOA, no hope of salvaging anything. Since I hadn’t bothered to push my local commits to the upstream repository, I had to redo the two weeks of work that went into those commits after I was issued my new workstation.
*hrmm*
If I didn’t know better I’d think you didn’t have any local commits and killed the laptop to buy time.
Nah, we were nearly done with the review, which actually was going well. Full disclosure: 1980’s Patzer might have gone down that road.
Pepsi?
No self-respecting coder drinks Pepsi, Jolt Cola or GTFO.
A: I don’t drink Pepsi.
B: No coders have self resepct
C: No one drinks Jolt.
D: I’m a manager.
Jolt Cola, LOL. “All the sugar and twice the caffeine!”
Kept me going through many a night of engineering hell.
Mornin’, reprobates!
Good morning, ‘patzie, U, Yu, Lack, Don, Sean, and TARDy!
I’m on vacation all this week, but it wouldn’t be a pleasant vacation if I couldn’t start the day with my morning Glibs – today at Tranq Base! Overcast, but already too warm for my lightweight hoodie.
Good Morning GT:
IS this a recovery vacation or are you going to do something enjoyable?
Good morning, ‘bodru! This is mainly a chill-out-at-home-since-it’s-my-usual-slow-spell-in-the-month AND get-ready-to-head-to-NY-for-SP’s-CoL vacation. No plans to hit the road until Friday, minimizing the time the tom kittehs are left home alone.
How are the lambies and all the rest of your sheepies? Have you gotten any much-needed rain?
We are still bone dry. Grass is crunchy.
I bought some grass bales from neighbor, and sheep/cows are eating that, so that should save me some money in the future. We have a 30% chance of rain Thursday. I will take it. High will only be 98. Good times.
Sheep are all alive.
it was lightly drizzling when I arrived at work, but I just turned and it is pouring buckets out there. One of the sidewalks in my field of view is almost flooded already. It still has somewhere to drain to, but the lawn to either side is resembling a rice paddy.
*waves to everyone*
I’ve been up since 0230 since I can’t sleep for more than 5-6 hours anymore.
Mornin’ to you too, rapscallion.

To follow up on a story I reported last week: I was able to confirm late Friday afternoon that our payroll processor had indeed been able to prevent Miss Very Young Teller’s inadvertent 401(k) deduction from being sent off to Voya, and they’ll process a refund for her with our next pay (first week of August.) To her everlasting credit, this satisfied Miss VYT, and she thanked me profusely and did NOT whine “But I need the money nowwwwww!” She even awarded me 100 points in our internal Give-Your-Coworkers-Props-When-They-Go-Above-And-Beyond-To-Help-You system, bless her heart! (And not in the Southern sense!) I take back all the cross things I said about her last week.
I stand by my limited commentary.
Also in her defense, Voya’s website – both on the personal account side and the group admin side that I use for our participants – is not the most user-friendly site I’ve ever seen, and it wouldn’t be difficult to think you’re just playing with various contribution scenarios and not realize you’re really making a change.
My commentary was about professional etiquette and communication, not the initial error. It was the constant pestering for updates where I took issue.
Ah, yes – quite correct. She may have been in the position you mentioned – needing every possible dollar for paying bills – but did need to learn how to handle it like a big girl in a manner appropriate to the workplace.
Well then, that is good news indeed. You are now 100 points closer to… what? Does your employer have a version of the Prize Patrol?
Oh, this online system offers a range of rewards for coworker recognition, events like your birthday and employment anniversary, etc. – merchandise, extra time off, various retailers’ gift cards, and what I usually redeem for, Virtual Visas in various dollar amounts. It’s really quite a slick system.
How many points to get a hug?
We just had our employee recognition redone. It is weird. You get entered into a drawing for handing out soft warm fuzzies.
Thankfully, our employee recognition system is just a mention at the all staff meeting after upper management finishes his rant for the fortnight.
I think there may be provisions in our Employee Handbook – and mentioned in our annually-required Sexual Harassment training (which is how to handle/prevent it, NOT how to do it) – which would preclude such a reward.
Also, your employer gives out tribbles??? 😕
We pick names from a jar and let employees pick a prize. The prize pool is mostly hand tools/accessories.
“We have here an 11.5mm combination wrench.”
That’ll go great with my smooth bore socket set.
