Poll: Celebrities

by | Jan 9, 2020 | Poll | 214 comments

Something that absolutely drives me nuts and makes me shake my head is the number of “celebrities” at all levels of fame, in various endeavors, who go out of their way to spout off about anything happening in the news.

They range from sounding uninformed to downright delusional. Of course, there are also those who sound completely insincere and one knows they are just doing it to get any publicity they can get to advance a career or make more money. (I can almost, sort of, cynically be OK with that.)

Do you know what I want an actor to do? Act. And a musician? That’s right, play music. I do not want to hear their political opinions. I don’t care what they think about Greta Thunberg. I only care that their acting or musicianship is worth experiencing.

In many cases, I’ve ended up losing respect for the celebrity and even sometimes instituting my own private boycott.

So, how about you? Do you care what your favorite celebrities think about politics, the environment, or any other pet cause? Does it make you like them or dislike them more?

Discuss.

I like it when they agree with me. When they don’t, they are idiots that should stick to entertaining.

    • Plinker762

That covets it, close the comments .

      • JaimeRoberto Delecto

Thou shalt not covet thy celebrity’s ass.

    • Trials and Trippelations

      Pretty much my thoughts ?

Those that agree with me are best.
Those that say nothing are good. I still assume they hold the usual left wings ideas, but at least they have the decency to not reveal their foolishness.
Those I disagree with are the worst

    • Mojeaux

      Yep. We’re done here.

  2. SUPREME OVERLORD trshmnstr

I don’t really plug into mainstream culture enough to keep up with celebrities anymore. I watch football and old westerns on TV, and I don’t do social media. I pretty much assume that they’re all idiots.

  3. Count Potato

Do you care what your favorite celebrities think about politics, the environment, or any other pet cause?

    Not really.

Does it make you like them or dislike them more?

It usually doesn’t make any difference (see first answer). Sometimes it makes me like them more, if it’s a good take. Only if it’s very excessive or extreme, it makes me like them less (eg. Alyssa Milano).

  4. Tulip

I’m with SP. I don’t care about their vapid opinions.

    • LemonGrenade

I make a general effort not to find out what actors/musicians/authors think about politics or are like in real life. It inevitably turns me off, and that’s not what I’m paying them for anyway. As long as that crap doesn’t seep into what I’m actually buying, I try to ignore it. Every once in a while, though, I’ll end up hearing about some terrible thing that someone whose work I respected said, and… I’ll find myself less likely to look for their work in the future.

  5. The Hyperbole

I don’t mind actors and musicians telling me what they think, it’s the web designers and lawyers and carpenters that should keep their traps shut.

    • Trials and Trippelations

      “Carpenters”

Heh. I think I saw what you did there

      • Ted S.

Karen should have opened hers and stuffed a little more down it….

      • Tres Cool

If Mama Cass had shared her sandwich with Karen Carpenter, they may both still be alive.

      • Trials and Trippelations

I guess it’s too late to say I thought it was a Jesus joke.

  6. We're not saying BEAM's an alien, but . . .

I don’t have any “favourite” celebrities. None. My spousal unit thinks I’m weird. (She is, of course, absolutely correct.)

People with money and fame are just bizarre human beings, by and large. They’re not worth the attention. But we simians just can’t stop worshiping access to resources (money) and power, I guess . . .

  7. Tulip

Thank you all for your vacation suggestions and please keep them coming.

    • Tundra

      Banff.

      Or Banff.

      • We're not saying BEAM's an alien, but . . .

Both are good, but also take the trip along the Icefields Parkway to Jasper. Jasper’s basically Banff but much less commercialized.

      • Tundra

Lol. Just getting a couple miles off the main drag dramatically decreases the people problem.

I promised an article on my trip there. If I ever stop shit-posting, I’ll get it done!

      • We're not saying BEAM's an alien, but . . .

If you’re a couple of miles off the main drag, you’re still in Banff National Park, but you’re no longer in Banff. But I quibble. The entire area’s fun. Just like the entire area around Jasper.  ;-)

      • JaimeRoberto Delecto

It’s a nice bike ride from Jasper to Banff, if that’s your thing.

We could be more on point with more information. What do you like to do and looking for in a vacation? Budget? No fly list or no? Think you already typed it would be September.

    • Tulip

Time period – summer through October. I like everything, I’ve been looking and just not feeling anything so I’m hoping a suggestion will make me say “Yeah! that’s it!”

      • Tulip

Mongolia sounds cool, I’m checking costs.

      • Donation Not Taxation

According to Radley Balko @ https://reason.com/2008/07/09/whats-the-matter-with-chicago/, the Miami statistical metropolitan area (SMA) would be the most libertarian SMA in the United States if it were not for “drugs—and that’s less a matter of the city’s own approach to the drug war than of draconian state laws and a heavy federal presence.” Florida has medpot but not funpot. If that is a problem, Reason’s top choice is Las Vegas.

*Radley Balko exclaims, “Vegas, baby!”, slips on sunglasses from CSI: Miami instead of from original CSI, slo-mo walks*

      • blackjack

Florida actually still arrests people for pot. They were all sneaky about smoking it when I was there. I don’t mess around, but they seemed really stressed out about it.

    • MikeS

      North Dakota.

    • Gustave Lytton

Alaska in shoulder season, after the major cruises stop. Fly from Anchorage to Fairbanks and take the train back (or vice versa). Do the glacier by boat tour from forget the name of it, but not far from Anchorage.

      • Gustave Lytton

Can get burned by the weather. But if you luck out, it’s heaven and no that many people around.

    • blackjack

Dunno. I’m going to Bonneville in Sept. For the bike races. I like Route 66, but I ride my bike on it, in a car, maybe still cool but less so? Plus it gets you to the Grand Canyon, the Hoover dam, the Colorado river and then Vegas. Drive right past Yusef, too.

      • MikeS

I drove one of these down about 5 miles of old Route 66 in Oklahoma. That was kinda cool.

      • blackjack

That thing is cool. What is it, a harvester?

      • MikeS

Yeah. AKA a combine. The header was off for transport. Most of the time I operated it, it looked like this.

    • leon

I’ve heard some people enjoy Topaz Mountain, Utah.

Since the vast majority of my musical interests are commies, I try to ignore it.

    • Ted S.

Most of my musical listening these days is classical, so most of the composers are long dead. Don’t have to worry about their political views.

      • Count Potato

If they died before Marx, you are all set.

      • juris imprudent

        Wagner?

      • Charles Easterly

        “Wagner?”

You know who else liked Wagner?

Onto a note related to some of the above commentary that “answered” SP’s post’survey, Stephen Fry regarding Wagner on the Craig Ferguson show from years ago.

      • Mojeaux

What I heard: “Wagner had mommy issues.”

      • Mojeaux

Actually, so I listened to that whole segment.

        That was powerful, thanks!

      • Charles Easterly

“Actually, so I listened to that whole segment.

        That was powerful, thanks!”

Thank you. I thought that the conversation to which I provided a link was relevant to the SP’s topic.

      • Mojeaux

I loved that he said he had a hard time listening–until the music started and then it just overcame him.

I got chills just listening to how he described it. It was a wonderful interview.

  9. Rhywun

Don’t care. Their opinions only move the needle a tiny bit in one direction or the other. I would even continue to watch Alyssa Milano do Project Runway if she hadn’t seemingly moved into full-time “activism”. The only exception is when they occasionally mix politics with their job, and then I tune out.

    • Jarflax

^this. I don’t want to be told how deplorable I am when I go watch a movie, but other than that people in their private capacity have a right to express their opinions. After all we do, we are doing it right now.

      • Sensei

Agreed. Although sometimes the hypocrisy can be off putting. For example taking the private airplane to the climate summit.

      • SUPREME OVERLORD trshmnstr

To cut through to the heart of it, much of the resentment comes from the outsized microphone and deference given to a group of people who couldn’t tell the difference between George Washington and George Costanza.

  10. Tres Cool

Ya know, when Janeane Garofalo did her stand-up bit only, I thought she was entertaining. Then she opened her mouth about politics, had a show on Air America, and I can only watch her now when shes in a situation where she’s being challenged.
When Rosie O’Donnell did stand up in the 80’s on HBO “Standup Spotlight” she was funny. Then she got all….Rosie.
Patton Oswalt was (and still kinda is) funny as F. Until he gets on Twitter and bashes everyone.
Lewis Black is tedious, and even with his left-leaning slant, can be funny.

My point? You’re way funnier when you’re comedians and do the job you know how to do, and not use your fame as a platform.

Im an environmental science guy that, while I feel Im good at what I do, Id never lecture OMWC on why the STK4026 MOSFET is the better platform to drive an amp instead of tubes.

    • Sensei

      This right here.

And I’d say properly designed you shouldn’t hear a difference. OTH, if you want an effects box you can do some fun things with tubes, but I wouldn’t want that as my everyday amp.

  11. Fourscore

Depends on age and breast size, young and voluptuous tend to garner my attention more. Other than that, opinions and assholes, everyone has one.

  12. AlmightyJB

People are idiots. Not gonna lose sleep over it.

  13. JD is Unemployed

Celebrities, i.e. people who go out of their way to demand attention, (as distinct from people who happen to be famous as a result of their immense talent, gallantry, bravery, achievement, etc) are fair game for rotten fruit, figuratively, because they have voluntarily placed themselves in the stocks. That sounds quite callous, but personally I don’t go out of my way to be negative and mean, I just mean that if they crave attention, they have to accept that they cannot control whether or not it’s good or bad. My sister used to put pictures of herself on large, public reddi forums, knowing full well the inevitability of some comments or memes resulting that she would find offensive. She did this one Christmas dat and then was screaming about it so I asked why the rest of us (family) would give a shit and why she was doing it instead of actually spending time with family. I stupidly said that she knew full well what might result from posting attention-seeking selfies complete with cleavage on a public forum, and she exploded, clawing at my face, and screeching about how I was “victim blaming” and how it was exactly like if I had told a rape victim how getting raped was their fault. On top of all that, my parents, hearing the commotion and not giving a shit about context, then got upset with me for upsetting her. I found out some time later that my sister had then lied to my mother about what had I said and done to make it seem like I had been callous and intimidating. This was some years ago when my sister was in her early twenties and obsessed with that gamergate thing, totally immersed in blogs and the sort of toxic online culture she is still apparently entangled with. I used to think she was s sociopath of some sort, but apparently she has an autistic spectrum diagnosis of some sort and I don’t really understand enough about how that may play a part in how she used to be. She’s mellowed now but still has other difficulties.

Wow. Yikes. That’s one of those family things I just don’t ever really get to talk about and I guess this brought it up and it was somewhat therapeutic to type it out. Welp. That’s about all I have to say about that.

    • JD is Unemployed

Addendum – I don’t necessarily condone people being jerkwads for the sake of it, but one has to accept that by seeking attention, one can’t demand the kind of attention received.

    • Rhywun

      Yikes, sorry.

I am the complete opposite. I hate attention.

When I assend to god-emperorhood I’ll decree that actors/actresesses will only be allowed to say their lines (as written by the sreenwriter/playwright. Musicians/singers will only be allowed to sing the lyrics as written or say “My next song is by the wonderful [redacted].” Atheletes will only be allowed to chose from a small list of phrases to include: “I take full responsiblity for this loss” “My teamates are responsible for this win” and “we’re taking it one game at a time.’

If another Robin Williams or Jonathan Winters comes along they can say whatever the fuck pops into their minds.

    • Donation Not Taxation

That is impinging on freedom of speech for the sake of it and not something such as incitement to violence or reckless defamation of character. What kind of ‘god-emperor’ can’t speak some ‘gospel’ to counter some speech with which you disagree? Maybe even have someone write down what you say and have a bunch of it printed and distributed in a book.

  19. Q Continuum

I’d like to say that I care as little about celebrities’ opinions as I do about my plumber’s, but that would be a lie. Probably because they’re such a vicious combination of ignorant and condescending, along with the fact that they have an unnaturally big megaphone, it annoys me, even though I wish it wouldn’t.

        “Where did you read that?”

For years now that’s been the assumption of so many lefties I’ve met, that I must have uncritically swallowed some Russian(!)/evil right wing misinformation. One in particular used to cock his head to the side, smirking and say “uh why is that funny, or clever, hmm?”, but then he considered the Guardian to be “going a bit right wing” because of some sort of conspiracy his circle was convinced of based on who was on the board of the trust who runs it or something. The point came up on here the other day about being able to read something while being cognizant of its inherent biases, and how trust in one’s perceived enemies to do that seems to be at an all time low.

Well that’s enough of my boring posts and shitty anecdotes for today. Tomorrow (today here) is Friday which means BEEEERRRR!!!111111

    • Stinky Wizzleteats

I have had many celebrity encounters. I have zero tolerance for celeb privilege. I often mess with the one’s I have met. It’s a side effect of not having any capacity for starstruckedness. I am free to mess with them and it’s funny because they are used to being fawned over.

    • blackjack

Oh, and I wish they’d keep their politics to themselves. It reduces my enjoyment of their art, despite trying hard to ignore it.

    Not a jot.

Does it make you like them or dislike them more?

If they’re assholes about it, I dislike them more. The ugliness inside is hard to unsee.

  29. LJW

Don’t really care for celebrity opinions. Even though the majority of them are lefties, I hate it even more when a celebrity throws out a conservative leaning opinion and the right holds it up like the word of God. Kanye is a prime example.

  30. LJW

Relating to celebrities. My Dad’s cousin(my 2nd cousin?) is a Michael Douglas doppelganger. In the 90s the family went on a trip to Vegas. Everywhere they went the service was spectacular. They skipped lines and got amazing seats. It didn’t occur to them what was going on until someone asked my cousin for his autograph.

I certainly hope he ramped it way up after finding that out.

  31. commodious spittoon

I would probably be disappointed to learn what Simon Pegg really thinks about Corbyn or Brexit, but it doesn’t unmake Spaced or the Cornetto films. I like Pink Floyd despite Waters. Alec Baldwin is a literally-wears-his-ass-as-a-hat asshat, but he’s likeable. I like him.

    • commodious spittoon

I don’t know why I italicized Floyd. I blame Roger Pinko “Fuck You Got Mine” Waters.

      • DenverJ

        Isn’t Floyd an Italian name?

  32. Mojeaux

If they agree with me, awesome. If they don’t, boohiss.

I have my celebrity crushes, but I DO NOT follow them on social media. I go out of my way to keep from hearing what they have to say.

However, I did once make the mistake of following Nikki Sixx on Twitter and he filled up my feed with new-agey affirmations. Dude, I know you died. Twice. And you’re clean. You do you, man, but I do not need to get life-affirming bullshit from a Drug Scout of America. That’s what Pinterest is for. I put up with that for two days. I thought it would get better. It did not.

I would, at one time, probably liked Roman Polanski’s films. I could not now, in good conscience, watch them.

The rest– I really really really try not to listen to them or seek out their opinions or anything so I don’t have a little smear on my lens that annoys me.

Hip hop and rap is different. Politics built hip hop, so I’m okay with that.

In a similar vein, how do you feel about separating a person from their work?

    O. J. Simpson: great running back; murderer

Michael Jackson : extremely talented musician ; possible kiddy diddler

Bill Cisby: America’s Dad; possibly the worst serial rapist ever

Is it possible to appreciate their achievements of they’re horrible people?

    • chipping pioneer

Well I should have proofread that first.

      • straffinrun

Yeah. You got the OJ one backwards.

      • Gustave Lytton

        Yeah, great pitchman.

The colonization of North America by the English wasn’t pretty, nor was the subsequent spread of The US across the continent, but I’m sure glad they happened.

I’m not going to throw the baby out with the bath water

    • Mojeaux

Is it possible to appreciate their achievements of they’re horrible people?

      Not cleanly.

I struggle with this mightily and I have to work quite hard to forget so that I can enjoy the work. I don’t have any cultural connection to O.J. Simpson. Michael Jackson was all over my adolescence (although that interview with Terence Trent D’Arby that slumbrew linked last night took him down another notch) and I enjoy the music. I also think his father fucked his mind so hard he didn’t know he was an adult most days. Bill Cosby, well. Gosh. I mean, that was heartbreaking and even now I WANT to tell myself he didn’t do it.

So…not cleanly. It’s tainted. There’s always a smear on the lens.

    • blackjack

I harbor doubts about the second two. Jacko was acquitted, and Cosby’s case was very weak. If those charges were true, they’d likely be as obvious as OJ’s, at least.

      • straffinrun

Michael is definitely an iffy one.

    • Gustave Lytton

I’ve watched and enjoyed (some) Polanski movies. He’s still a piece of shit. Same with many of Weinstein’s productions.

    • Animal

Michael Jackson : extremely talented musician ; possible kiddy diddler

      I’d replace “musician” with “entertainer.”

Paul Simon is a musician. Jackson was an entertainer. I think there’s a difference.

Celebrity means little to me one way or the other. I said hi to a singer I like a lot in passing once. It happened to be in the line for the Toilet at a concert.

I saw a few in airports, the men were always much shorter And the women much less attractive in real life.

Elle McPherson was the only exception.

    • Rhywun

I saw an MTV VJ I like at the train station once. We nodded hi at each other and that was it. For NYC I’ve encountered surprisingly few celebs.

  41. Cannoli

Generally speaking, I care about the work, not the artist. I don’t pay that much attention to what artists do outside their works.

I decide case by case on whether to pay attention when celebrities talk about their works. I appreciate when a celebrity seems to actually enjoy their work and its fans. Examples that have stood out to me are Brandon Sanderson, who spends his free time in airports signing all of his books in the airport bookstore, and Eddie McClintock, who comes to Dragon Con every year and geeks out as much as the regular attendees.

On the other hand, there seem to be lots of artists who don’t understand what it is people liked about their works. I try not to pay attention to them because it undermines the work I enjoyed (for example, J. K. Rowling).

As far as whether you can separate the work and the artist when the artist is a genuinely horrible human being, I don’t know the answer, I just know that there are some Bill Cosby jokes I can’t stop referencing.

    • Gender Traitor

I care about the work, not the artist.

I think that’s where I tend to be. One of my favorite songs was written by Pete Seeger (though my preferred performance is someone else’s cover of it,) and on at least one occasion when mentioning this, I’ve felt compelled to add “but I try not to hold it against the song.”

Report: John Huber Completes Review of Clinton Foundation and Uranium One, Finds Nothing…

    • hayeksplosives

I bet he found a postcard with Epstein’s face on it.

    • LJW

For someone who so foolishly handled the whole closet server scandal, yet somehow got away with it, Clinton handled the uranium one deal well. They seemed to push everything to the limit without breaking the law. It’s all still very shady whether legal or not.

    • Stinky Wizzleteats

      Nothing illegal or nothing unethical?

    Grab your nuts protectors

    https://www.registerguard.com/news/20200109/university-of-oregon-police-k-9-handler-fired-after-misconduct-investigation

Completely glossed over is that several other officers were at the scene of this illegal arrest and unlawful use of force, and the fired officer was not arrested either at the scene or later after the investigation. Nor was he arrested for falsifying records.

Ready for the actual nut punch? The victim has no recourse because… he was shot and killed by a neighboring police department a month later.

    https://www.kezi.com/content/news/DA-to-brief-media-on-North-Eugene-shooting—566170601.html

Again, doing nothing illegal, police stopped him and when he refused to cooperate with the officer, was illegally arrested again, and resisting that illegal arrest, was murdered. Gee, getting illegally arrested a month prior would have nothing to do with his frame of mind.

  46. Suthenboy

    False premise.

Celebrities do not have opinions. They say whatever is calculated to increase their notoriety. The whole point is to draw attention to themselves. They do not believe anything they say and dont care either. That is all there is to it.
Many of them are very talented but broken people. Empty shells desperately trying to fill the void in themselves with accolades from others. Often they are fairly awful people as well. In general I don’t like them very much personally.

I recommend paying no attention to what they say outside of their performances.

  47. hayeksplosives

Yted Neely and Marc Martel are lovely people in person. As is Norm NacDonald.

I met Pierce Brosnan only briefly but he was as Remington Steele as you could imagine.

Jesse Centura was a total paranoid nut by the time I sat by him in First Class once.

Michelle Bachman was what you’d expect.

I did Craft Services (on-set feeding of those who make movies and TV) for many years, working with/for many, many Hollywood folk. In my experience, the talent (for the most part) was nice but tend to vapidity; there were only three for whom I would never work again, no matter the rate offered and perhaps thrice that number of folk for whom I would drop everything and rush to the job (Edie Falco, Terrance Howard, and Cameron Diaz top that list). I would posit that their leftist leanings are more a product of an easy lifestyle and constant bombardment by the media than any actual ideological conviction or even considered principles. Interestingly, the majority of the working crew (grips, electricians, props dept., art dept., wardrobe, Teamsters) trend centrist and even radically right-wing.

Today in “I hate political pundits”, something small and inane.

This one only comes to you because the wife turned on CNN late last night as we helped one of the spuds finish their school project. Chris Cuomo was on. Good lord, that guy is annoying. I’m not speaking of the content…. just his voice, his face, his manner of speech….. he’s like that belligerent asshole at the bar that you just know is going to end up starting a fight before last call. Why anyone watches that is beyond me.

Anyway, he had a whole 5 minute segment on how terrible and dishonest Trump is because when he had his press conference announcing the missile attacks he was all somber and not animated. He didn’t offer up any detailed intelligence reports about Soleimani. And then when he went to a rally that night he was all energetic and full of enthusiasm. And he said Soleimani was a bad dude who was looking to bomb our embassies… and he was not just looking at the embassy in Iraq, but other embassies too. This was a bad dude!

“You don’t think he might be lying to his supporters, do you?” Cuomo asked with a smirk. You see, he was all upbeat and enthusiastic at the rally and he offered up a tidbit that he didn’t offer up at the press conference 10 hours earlier. So he totally must be lying about the whole thing!!! See! I told you that Soleimani was totally on a diplomatic mission and there is no proof at all that he was ever involved in terrorism or that there was ever any threat! (smirk)

What a goob. He’s like the dumbest version of the HnR trolls. He doesn’t even seem to understand the talking points he spouts. I really don’t know how people watch that stuff. He’s like a much less talented Bill O’Reilly.

    • Stinky Wizzleteats

He’s an idiot who makes his living telling other idiots what they want to hear which is par for the course nowadays.

  50. Festus

He really is Fredo. Who the fuck uploads video of themselves working out? “I’m smaaaahrt, Dad! Just like Andy! But I’m strooong too!” The guy is a lack-wit.

      • cyto

And with a serious turn…. this is the sort of sophomoric humor that the proggies will extract and hold up in an out of context isolation with feigned horror.

Which, to steal an idea from Ricky Gerveais, is even more funny.
