Saturday evening links of patio life

Let’s do some cooking.

The seating area at Che’ Spud.

Srsly, I married up. Way up.

On to…the links!

Talk about euphemisms.

I’m as concerned about this as the next guy, but dayum, people. Oh well, maybe it will distract from TD for awhile.

It’s just like home, so why wouldn’t he be in Arizona?

If these have some heft, they could be on to something.

Abbas takes his ball and goes home. Calls Trump a “poopy head”. Seriously, Trump should wash his hands of the whole thing, look at the Arabs and say “this is your problem now”.

A little Charlie Daniels tonight.

And  a bonus track tonight.

We had some snow yesterday. Didn’t stick though.

    • Spudalicious

I haven’t had to use the blower at all this year.

      • Francisco d'Anconia

That’s because I just bought one.

      • Fourscore

5 times so far, usually 3-4 only

  2. Naptown Bill

    Now THAT is a patio.

    • Spudalicious

We still have to get a table and there are a few details to tidy up. The black cloth on the front page picture will be sod in a few weeks.

    • westernsloper

      Indeed! Nice work Spud.

    • Shirley Knott

      No kidding. Respect!

    • Chipping Pioneer

      Yup.

    • Chafed

That’s a great set up Spud.

  3. AlmightyJB

    Nice set up dude.

    • Spudalicious

Thx. We are exceptionally pleased with how it turned out.

      • Spudalicious

You know what, Bob? I could be just as happy sitting on your patio with a beer in hand. This is just stuff. It’s the people that matter.

      • Yusef drives a Kia

I was funning, mostly because you are right, I would love your pad, but My awesome Burgers would the same,
        YKWIM,

      • Spudalicious

        Yep.

      • Fourscore

Serious patio, looks more like all weather living space. High life, Spud, good job.
        Patio warming party?

I’ll have to take a rain check but I’ll be there in spirit, depending on who else is coming.

  4. Not Adahn

    Well… bye.

    • Not Adahn

(in reference to the Abbas link)

    • Suthenboy

The Palis have had numerous opportunities for their own state. They do this every time. Next comes the blowing up of Jewish children. It is all or nothing for them, and all includes the murder of every Jew on the planet.
      Fuck. Them.

  5. Sean

    Sweet setup.

  6. C. Anacreon

Dayum Spud, that’s a nice patio you’ve got. Is that a lake in the background?

Idaho is looking pretty sweet right now based on your photos. Perhaps we should take NotAdahn’s suggestion from the last thread and move.

But don’t worry, we won’t be another of the CA locusts coming to ruin Idaho. As beautiful as you’ve got it there, I think Idaho is a bit too chilly for me after 35 years of losing my Midwestern thick skin and being pussified by the never-been-below 30 degrees weather here.

    • Spudalicious

LOL! I wish. That’s the neighbors privacy fence.

      • westernsloper

Saw you tossing a pizza skin naked one too many times did they? That is why my neighbors told me to put up a fence.

      • Spudalicious

I had an apron on, for christ sake.

      • J. Frank Parnell

Yeah, but you’re supposed to put the apron part in front and tie the straps around your back, not the other way around.

      • Spudalicious

        Damn dyslexia.

      • pan fried wylie

It’s a trade-off between spatter-burns on his crotch or skidmarks on the cushions. See those cushions? The burns will heal.

      • pan fried wylie

I didn’t see any potted plants in the pictures. Think those are sunflowers out behind the grill?

      • C. Anacreon

It’s a trade-off between spatter-burns on his crotch or skidmarks on the cushions.

        Oh, Skidmarks on my Crotch
        You’ve got me in fifth
You’re burning rubber like my love
        I’m driving in risk

        /Go-Gos

  7. AlmightyJB

So Coronavirus, Impeachment, and Super Bowl seems like the entire news cycles these days.

    • Gdragon

Have you already forgotten Kobe and GiGi? 😉

  8. AlmightyJB

So should I buy stock in Alcoa? Is this going to be a thing?

    • AlmightyJB

Oh I left out the continued mourning of Kobe.

    • MikeS

I don’t know how much it would really affect Alcoa, but Ball Corp might be a good buy.

      • AlmightyJB

Ok. Good thought. I’ll have to check their financials.

  9. C. Anacreon

Just looked at the photos of the Buttigieg event from the links.
If this had been a Trump event there would be endless distress in the media at the monochromatic audience.
But hey! Mayor Pete’s gay, and a D, so it’s ok that his audience was entirely middle-aged and up white people.

    • Suthenboy

I hear his campaign is falling apart. There is lots of internal squabbling with the staff over….diversity and micro aggressions. I have to laugh.

    • The Hyperbole

It’s Iowa – everyone is middle aged and white. Most likely racist as well.

      • AlmightyJB

New Hampshire is probably going to be more telling.

      • DEG

I haven’t paid attention recently, but last time I did Buttigieg seemed to be doing OK in New Hampshire.

      • Count Potato

There is only half a black person in New Hampshire.

      • AlmightyJB

        Exactly.

      • Plinker762

The French-Canadians make up for the lack of color.

  10. robc

The rest of the EPL is trying to make Sloopy look like a genius.

    • Ted S.

Bayern are finally at the top of the Bundesliga. Now to win Champions League….

      • Rhywun

I don’t dislike Bayern but I sure want someone else to win for a change. Oh well.

    • Raven Nation

Using American baseball approaches, LFC’s magic number is 21.

  11. Suthenboy

Very nice. I had to double take those shots. It is nearly identical to the house my son just bought.

    • Tres Cool

He’s secretly living in your son’s house.
Or his wife is your son’s realtor.

    • Timeloose

      Agreed, great patio.

  12. The Hyperbole

    Stamped concrete or pavers?

    • Spudalicious

Thanks, Suthen. We love our home. And the only upgrade left to do is redoing the kitchen.

      • Spudalicious

        Dammit.

Stamped concrete and the color is in the cement.

      • The Hyperbole

Ah, I zoomed in and can see the control cuts now, very nice.

      • Spudalicious

There’s also 3″ foam board that extends 20″ down around the edge for frost heave protection.

      • Suthenboy

I was about to ask just that. Here in Louisiana there is not a slab that is not cracked. The. ground here is awful. It moves around like a pile of worms and expands and contracts with the least change in moisture.

One side of my hill is sliding off but fortunately not under the house. The third time my water line broke I was looking around at that location (it is near the property line on the south) and started squinting at a persimmon tree….hey, I thought that tree was on my side of the line? And that one….I thought it was straight?

My brother the civil engineer came and looked at it, waved his hand and said “Yep, you have….whatever they call it. the top layer of soil is sliding down the hill in a whole sheet. fortunately the house is on the pinnacle of the hill and the top layer of slidey stuff (a very plastic clay) was scraped off down the bedrock to build the house.

      • Spudalicious

It’s not quite that bad, but I do have a couple of slabs in the driveway and walkway that have lifted a bit. When I hit the one on the driveway with the blower, it drives it right into my bladder. I’m hoping I can do a poly lift without radically changing the drainage.

      • Ted S.

You have hills in Louisiana? I thought the highest point was like 100 feet above sea level.

      • Suthenboy

It is beautiful. I hope you are very happy there.
I have an advantage though….I get to go lazily hang out on my son’s porch and he gets to do all of the cleanup while I go home to my shower and bed. Ha!

*Kidding. We made a plan today for tomorrow evening cooking in his outdoor kitchen so I made the joke I just told. He said “That’s fine because you have to do all of the cooking*

      • Spudalicious

I’m petty sure you’ve got a sweet spot to hang out on at Che’ Suthen.

  13. Juvenile Bluster

With the prices on legal marijuana, I can see why people still go black market.

We’ll see how it goes once I can buy the stuff. I’m not expecting it to be a panacea but it has to work better than the drugs I’m on now.

    • Spudalicious

If I still smoked, I could get an ounce across the border in Oregon for under $200.

    • Yusef drives a Kia

No kidding, Nevada is a ripoff

    • westernsloper

Black markets exist for a reason.

      • KSuellington

The good thing here is that I can go black market if I want and then go the shops or delivery services for more choice and range of different products.

  14. grrizzly

    The patio looks terrific.

    • Spudalicious

Thanks, grrizzly. I’m looking forward to seeing it after the concrete is sealed. And I looks like I finally procured a load of maple and walnut for the pizza oven.

      • mindyourbusiness

        Love your cooking setup!
        *turns bright green*

  15. Juvenile Bluster

So it’s been just under 24 hours since Brexit officially occurred. Are there any survivors in the UK?

    • westernsloper

No sign of JD. I think he was ate by the ravaging hordes.

    • JaimeRoberto Delecto

No way of knowing since their internet is out.

  16. DEG

    Chez Spud looks nice.

“The vice president is suggesting this is no time to take a risk on someone new. I’m suggesting this is no time to take a risk on trying to beat a fundamentally new challenge with a familiar playbook. It’s going to take something new,” the 38-year-old candidate told the crowd.

Something new? Like McAffee for President? Oh. I don’t think that’s he means.

“If your dogs run around outside and come to contact with the outbreak or people infected with the virus, then your pets should also be put in quarantine,” Professor Li Lanjuan from China’s National Health Commission told the state broadcaster on Wednesday.

That’s an interesting euphemism for “selling your dog to a food vendor”. Yes, that’s a bad joke.

The statement did not provide information on when Al-Nouri entered the United States or how long he had lived in Phoenix.

    Huh.

The stadium instead will offer 50,000 recyclable and reusable aluminum cups to football fans.

How well do they fly through the air when filled with beer?

The Charlie Daniels song is good.

  17. Juvenile Bluster

Local PD had to put this out after a local freakout yesterday:

Yesterday evening an internal email was distributed to [police] personnel sharing information regarding a possible case of the coronavirus at [Hospital]. Shortly thereafter, it was confirmed that there was NO case of the coronavirus at the hospital. Through unknown means, this advisory email was publicly shared across various social media platforms. Please know that any public post referencing this email should be disregarded. There was never a case of the coronavirus at [Hospital].

    • KSuellington

I saw you were getting a medical mj card in another thread but was late to it. Here is my (unsolicited) 2 cents on the devil weed, as someone who has used it recreationally (and for pain relief) for thirty years. Start out slow and try the indicas first. In my experience eating it is vastly more powerful, I know this varies a lot from person to person, but a relatively small dose eaten for me knocks me out, I don’t even really feel high, I just get super duper sleepy. I pretty much only eat it if I’m looking to snooze. If you go the vape route there are a lot of cool products out there now, and if you using reputable brands you should have no worries about the weird stuff they put in some of the black market vape stuff. You can also vape straight bud if you use the right vape tool. Puri5 makes a really good one for about $100. You can grind up some bud and put in in the little chamber and dial in the temp you want. You may also want to check out CBD heavy stuff or pure CBD vapes, gummies and such. It is good for relaxation and mild pain relief. It gives zero “high”. Good luck and I hope it brings you some relief.

  18. DEG

“Hot Rod Lincoln” is also a good song.

I had two mid-80s Town Cars. I considered putting a manual transmission in one of them. Regular Cars on something similar, turning a Roadmaster into a Cam-master.

    • Timeloose

Manual transmission cars are disappearing even in sporty models. The 80’s has few large cars with them.

My good friend sold a 90’s 2door 5 speed Tahoe today. One of 50 or so made.

I’m hoping the new Bronco will be made with a 6speed as promised.

      • KSuellington

Are they recreating the classic 60’s/70’s Bronco look? If so, and if it has a 6 speed manual I very very much want.

      • Timeloose

It’s still a mystery on how it will look. There are lots of retro looking hints. Included removable doors and roof. It’s supposed to be based on the ranger chassis with upto 2.7L v6 twin turbo and 7 speed Getrag. I’m going to be in the market in 2022. By then the prices should be lower.

      • KSuellington

Ohhhh, very nice. Looking forward to seeing them.

      • DEG

I am kicking around the idea of getting a 2020 Mustang with a manual as a fun car once I receive my second retention bonus.

      • Plinker762

I went from an automatic transmission Challenger to one with a manual. I love it.

  19. Rhywun

Chinese authorities threaten to kill pet cats and dogs over coronavirus fears

It’s like they’re some kind of authoritarians or something.

    • westernsloper

Remember tomorrow is groundhog day and I have heard they carry coronavirus too.

  20. KSuellington

    | Seriously, Trump should wash his hands of the whole thing, look at the Arabs and say “this is your problem now”.

I love this quote by El Trumpo. We should adopt this posture more often in regards to these foreign entanglements.

“Without (the Palestinians), we don’t do the deal and that’s okay,” he said. “If we do, it’ll be a tremendous tribute to everybody. And if we don’t, life goes on.”

    • Spudalicious

That’s Trump the transactionalist. And that’s exactly what the swamp doesn’t get about him.

      • KSuellington

It’s one of my favorite parts of his presidency and kind of refreshing to hear from an elected critter. The plan actually looks like the best deal the Palestinians could hope for, but alas it benefits their leadership more to keep playing the victim card and keep the status quo.

      • Stinky Wizzleteats

Yep, the Palestinian people would benefit greatly along with everyone else in the region but the leadership is too corrupt and bitter to even consider it. Gilda Meir was right, there won’t be peace until they love their children more than they hate the Israelis. Screw it, maybe Palestine can just be ceded to the Egyptians. Let them deal with it.

      • Suthenboy

No one in that region will touch them. Palestinian culture is poison. Egypt build a wall.

      • Suthenboy

        It is more than that.
I have been watching and thinking about it a. lot. Here is what I have come up with:

        1. People are either collectivists or individualists. Individualists are outliers. Collectivism has its million year old evolutionary roots in the economy.

        2. In a non-industrial world one cannot produce much by hand so starvation is always looming. Solution? Yoke your fellow man and live from his work. Or you can just go take directly from your neighbor at spear point. A non-industrial economy is a looters economy. This is why slavery has only been thought of as a moral issue since the industrial revolution began to get cranked up. Before that it was an economic issue and people just accepted it as the way things are.

        3. We and our ancestors spent a million years in a looter’s economy. We evolved in it. It has only been a couple hundred years since we have had en economy where cooperation and mutual benefit are possible. We have not had enough time yet. to fully adjust socially or culturally to this new reality.

        4. The people who seek power are primarily individuals that neither understand or are capable of understanding this new economy. They are looters and their followers collectivists. It is literally in their DNA. It is why they dont get Trump and dont get middle America and why they despise the constitution that is a complete mystery to them.

*spits* Feel free to skewer any of that that seems off

      • KSuellington

Mostly sounds about right’ the only one I would nitpick with is number 1 as I think most people fall somewhere in between, with true collectivists on the one extreme vastly outnumbering the true individualists on the other side.

      • Suthenboy

That is accurate. I dichotomized for simplicity and brevity, but yes, there is definitely a bell curve and your estimation of the distribution sounds right.

Consider also that every other country in the world that I am aware of is based on religion or ethnicity or language or race.
Those are all means of collectivising. America is the only country in the world based on an idea. In the end America is not a place, it is an idea. This is why we see many people of other races, religions or languages as our own countrymen. In other countries, not so much.
I think the vast majority of humanity leans heavily towards collectivism and do not understand us AT. All. They also hate us, something we see a lot of in our own homegrown collectivists.

      • Suthenboy

“In the end America is not a place, it is an idea.”

Oh shit. I didnt mean to open the ‘open borders’ can’o’worms.

      • Stinky Wizzleteats

Without a welfare state that’s not a problem.

      • KSuellington

Absolutely, but one thing I did find in living overseas for a handful of years was that, yes, there are tons of people who do not get the idea of America at all and dislike it. There are also many who more correctly don’t like us because of our foreign policy of the last decades. I was in Europe and South America for much of the Bush II years and there was a whole lot of negativity due to the Iraq war, I didn’t see nearly the kind of negative reaction to my Americanness before that. There are a not small number of people abroad though who very much get it. I had a number of conversations with natives that wished their countries could be more like us, and not just economically, but culturally.

      • Suthenboy

Agreed but it is important to differentiate between the looters we let get power here and the awful shit they do, which incidentally is the same shit that looters in every country do, and the idea that is America: All people are created equal and have inalienable rights. It is a common mistake for a lot of people to put the blame on the idea for the actions of people who dont believe in that idea. Ok, not always a mistake but often a deliberate mendacious tactic.

BTW I experienced that very thing in Bolivia. When I got there they loved America. By the time we left they were burning Uncle Sam in effigy outside our embassy.

      • Mojeaux

I think this is profound. Saving.

      • westernsloper

*spits* Feel free to skewer any of that that seems off

I think perhaps people have been trading goods for services/other goods probably forever when they decided not to occasionally kill the dude with the goods they desired.

      • Suthenboy

Of course they have but in an economy of deprivation they only did it when they couldn’t kill or enslave others.

        * I had lunch with a Jordanian recently. At one point he said he found it odd that etiquette here was that people did not put their hands on the table when they eat. In his country it is required. I asked why, he said because everyone wants to see everyone elses hands. They dont trust that you dont have a knife or gun if they cant see your hands.

      • Rhywun

etiquette here was that people did not put their hands on the table when they eat

I’ve always found that ridiculous and refuse to do it.

        One thing Europe gets right.

      • westernsloper

Interesting. I assume everybody has a knife because, well everybody (male at least) carries a knife. Also I don’t care if they have a gun because most around here do and they don’t shoot people for no reason. On a side note……I have only known one Jordanian and he aided in me not being murdered so no problem here with Jordanians.

      • Sean

Girl at the office whipped out her automatic Kershaw knife the other day to show it off. I mean it was the small one, but I still found it amusing.

      • Suthenboy

I have no problems with Jordanians either. I am fiends with the guy. That’s why we were having lunch.

People mistake me for a racist all of the time. I am not. I am a cultural bigot. Culture means a lot, race, nothing. Still, those outliers, the individualists and people who understand the idea of America are produced from every culture.

      • Rothbardsbitch

An agricultural economy fosters a libertarian society. I’m dying from the flu so forgive me if I sound incoherent.

        1) Thomas Jefferson believed that a country of small to medium-sized farms would create a society that cherishes property rights and create people of good moral character. Ain’t no lazy farmers after all. Furthermore, because you mixed blood and sweat and tears into the land you would be much less likely to allow it to be appropriated by the state, your neighbor as well would have this same attitude.

        2) Big government did not come until industrialization. The progressive movement used the poor living and working conditions to justify big government and the people went along with it. Industrialization killed classical liberalism and created modern liberalism.

        2)

    • mikey

That struck me as the most intelligent thing any American politcian has ever said about the ME.

    • Homple

‘Seriously, Trump should wash his hands of the whole thing, look at the Arabs and say “this is your problem now”.’

      Pretty much what he did.

  21. Yusef drives a Kia

I didn’t mean to piss you off Spud, I just wanted to show the wide range of BBQ styles we have, money or not,
    Yes, I’m Jelly….

    • westernsloper

Pretty sure you did not piss Spud off. He was saying he would be happy to drink a beer on your patio and that probably goes for most here. Cheers!

    • Spudalicious

This is an interweb chat forum, my friend. No one has ever said anything that has pissed me off.

      Except for that one guy…

      • Ted S.

        [shakes head dolefully]

      • Yusef drives a Kia

hey, you guys are my Friends, even you Ted,
        /love ya man…

      • Q Continuum

        YOUR MOTHER WEARS COMBAT BOOTS

      • MikeS

        I said I was joking!

    • westernsloper

How many quarters did he spend? That gave me early eighty’s flashbacks. Now bring on the pac man!

      • Rhywun

Probably zero. That appears to be a Super Mario clone with hand-crafted levels – he probably made that level himself.

      • pan fried wylie

        Authentic hand-crafted artisanal vintage-recreation Super Mario-clone levels.

      • Rhywun

        The classiest levels.

      • Chafed

It was awful then and is awful now.

    • Rhywun

Oh fuck hell to the no

  22. straffinrun

    Patiooooooo In Idahoooooo. Looks wonderful.

    • westernsloper

#3 I see clitoris. Or might be.

      • Yusef drives a Kia

Wife wears those, As perfect for Titties as Yoga pants for the Ass,

      • DEG

        #3 looks good.

So does #7. I don’t like #32’s tattoo, but otherwise she is fine.

  23. LemonGrenade

That is one gorgeous patio. Great job.

  24. Scruffy Nerfherder

    Nice digs man.

  25. Mojeaux

I owe an abject apology to RAHeinlein, Yusef, and Jarflax. I am out of sorts today and I had no right to be snippy with you. I am sorry.

    • cyto

      Oh, no!

That is exactly how my wife apologizes when she gets all snippy with me. It is much later, and it sounds exactly like that.

I think you guys are all now common law married.

      • Mojeaux

Yeah, well, I yelled at my husband, too.

      • Ted S.

Yeah, but all wives yell at their husbands. :-p

      • juris imprudent

Mine doesn’t. And no it isn’t because she’s mute or has a ball-gag locked in place.

She doesn’t mind me raising my voice, as long as it isn’t directed at her.

    • Yusef drives a Kia

No Worries, we have our days, I’m just glad you are here, with all of us….

    • westernsloper

I miss all the good stuff. Did you tell them to fuck off? Go suck an egg? long walk short pier? Eat tide pods?

      • Mojeaux

No, but I was rather bitchy. I try to keep my Supreme Bitch off the web.

      • AlmightyJB

Lucky Glibs, I usually have to pay extra for that treatment.

    • RAHeinlein

Not at all – I should have tagged my post as sarc. No apologies necessary on any level.

    • The Hyperbole

Thistle Finch rye with a small ice cube.

      • AlmightyJB

Haven’t had Thistle Finch. You like it? I have some Michter’s Rye lying around that’s pretty decent.

      • Sean

        I really like it.

      • AlmightyJB

        Cool. I’ll look for it.

Redemption Rye — trying to empty some of the bottles that aren’t going into permanent inventory.

Yeah, I’ve bought a couple bottles of Redemption Rye. Very good stuff.

Make it standard so now all progress will be frozen, or am I missing something?

      • cyto

Nope! Sounds like you have it all figured out!

      • Stinky Wizzleteats

The good news is that we’ll get to live with the consequences too.

      • straffinrun

My new Iphone headphones are great. Had them for over a year and they still work as good as when I bought them. The EU would’ve frozen us with those round jacks that died every other month. Assholes.

      • Suthenboy

I think you nailed it. I think some SciFi writer had something to say on the subject….something about bad luck.

    • Stinky Wizzleteats

That’s just stupid. Why not just let the market sort it out or not if people don’t care enough to advantage one over the other?

      • Suthenboy

Why would you let people figure things out for themselves when you can just mandate things for them?

        ‘The market’….*snort*

See my comment above about the looter’s economy.

    • Yusef drives a Kia

My Wife’s newest Android already has an Iphone style connector, and?

“ The EU resolution pointed to e-waste as one of the biggest reasons the industry needs to adop a charging cable standard.”

      Fuck. Off.

      • Yusef drives a Kia

You mean the 7 chargers that came with each phone that are useless?

      • Sean

Wireless charging is bad ass. This seems like a self correcting problem.

      • Suthenboy

Exactly. By the time they start enforcing this the technology they are trying to regulate will be obsolete.
I predict the control freaks will try their damndest to slow the advance of technology so that they can keep their thumbs on it so that they dont become obsolete themselves.

They would have us all living in caves if they could.

      • Rhywun

        Wireless charging is bad ass.

I can’t wait for that some day, but my current iPhone 7 is still in perfect condition and not getting replaced any time soon, knock on wood.

      • straffinrun

        Same. Thing is indestructible.

      • Sensei

Where is our usual EE contingent?

Wireless charging is problematic with cases, best case I’ve read is 40% efficient or so with that remaining energy going to heat. Guess where that heat goes – right into you battery.

That said fuck EU! If folks want it they should be able have it.

Also not a fan of the removal of the 3.5mm audio jack as you can’t use your preferred headphones and Bluetooth is a lossy format. But if there is no market for it once again I’m not going to mandate it.

      • UnCivilServant

It’s not true that there’s not a market. There’s a lot of people who want their standard interfaces, but the manufacturers are trying to push their proprietary periferals, and so far it hasn’t cost them any market share of note to flip off that subset of customers.

It’s not that there’s no market, it’s just that it’s not enough of a dealbreaker to leave the latest devices rotting on store shelves.

      • Rhywun

Also not a fan of the removal of the 3.5mm audio jack

FWIW iPhones come with a converter from Lightning to that jack.

      • Sensei

Yup – one more dongle to lose.

Apple now charges for it I think on everything, but maybe not the absolute top of the line. That said it is like$9 so I’ll give them credit. The GD thing only puts out 1V because of EU regulations. That works fine for most earbuds, but won’t drive some headphones very well.

I’m an Android person and my current phone lacks a 3.5mm it also comes with a USB-C to 3.5mm.

      • Stinky Wizzleteats

I find the insanity and monomania in their comments section amusing. The pretzels they tie themselves into to link damn near everything to (((certain people))) is hilarious.

      • Sensei

Some interesting analysis in the articles. There articles on Epstein seemed quite on point given my experience.

I also never read the comments for all the reasons discussed.

      • Festus

In all seriousness, I avoid them just because of the commentary. Waded in once or twice and it was like every Prog’s idea of what a shit-lord site really is. Fredos. The lot of them.

      • Sensei

The actual articles even if you don’t agree with them are actually researched.

In a past life I did sell side equity research – you can tell that some of the writers there were either creators or consumers of the stuff the street put outs. The processes, logic and language are all clues.

However, when it comes to geopolitics that’s what seem to bring out all the (((haters))) in the comments.

    • westernsloper

I saw that but never deciphered why.

  29. Festus

Cool patio! We just got the mortgage statement yesterday and we should be free and clear by about the time that I drop dead. Mind you, we did rebuild over the existing home so that set us back about 15 years.

    • Spudalicious

So your wife can burn the mortgage and stir the ashes in with yours? That way, you would be stuck with a mortgage for an eternity.

      • Festus

        Pretty much.

  30. Not Adahn

On the one hand, wtf? On the other hand, at some point in my life, I’m going to want a side-loading .45-70, and polymer is great for guns that actually get taken outside.

    https://www.henryusa.com/x-models/

    • westernsloper

      Want one.

      • westernsloper

        Sweet jebus that is ugly.

      • Not Adahn

Are we sure that’s a real product, and not a spoof web page?

      • Suthenboy

Mossberg has never been known for beauty. Decent guns still.

      • juris imprudent

Taking every bad aesthetic in gun design over the last 100 years and mashing them all together!

      • Not Adahn

They will be cheaper IRL. My LGS sells Henry products for $150-200 below MSRP.

    • Stinky Wizzleteats

      Me likey.

      • Not Adahn

It’s probably a good idea, but 1913 rails and M-LOK on a lever gun is something it will take me time to accept.

      • Suthenboy

Oh they are putting tacticool crap on everything these days. I know it is. just marketing but dammit. Cut that shit out.

    • Suthenboy

Believe it or not (I do want one of those) the one I want most is the lever action 410 shotgun, the most impractical of the bunch. My brother asked why…..”That has to be more fun than the law allows”
He thought about it a second or two. “Yeah, I think you are right. Hmmm. We might have to get a pair to shoot clays with.”

      • Suthenboy

        That’s the one.

Winchester made one once upon a time but no longer.

      • Not Adahn

Apparently the top finishers in Cowboy Shooting use 1887 replicas, but they seem to have a massive learning curve.

      • Suthenboy

Oh wait, no, I want the full carbine stock and long barrel.

      • Spudalicious

I don’t think sporting clays would be too successful with the Axe.

I have my dad’s .410 bolt action. I keep asking myself, “why”?

    • Q Continuum

I have a Marlin .45-70. It kicks ass. It also kicks like an ass.

Fun to shoot but my shoulder can only take so much.

      • KSuellington

Yup, I have the same gun, fun as hell to shoot, but only a dozen or so rounds.

  31. UnCivilServant

Well, I have an idea, but I have to name the darn thing

    • Festus

“If you can name a cat you can name a story”.

      • UnCivilServant

It doesn’t make it a good name. Sir Fuzzy Bluster doesn’t realize what it sounds like.

      • Festus

Aw c’mon… “Mr. Whisker Biscuit and the Land of a Thousand Space Heaters” would be a fine name for a tale. Children’s book, even.

      • UnCivilServant

But it’s a terrible name for chimeric crature Drea is going to be fighting in the Arena.

      • westernsloper

“Mr Whisker Biscuit nonchalantly licked the milk from under his nose and looked for a place to nap. He nestled amid the heaters on a towel that smelled like a gym locker. Mr Whiskers had no sense of smell which allowed him to piss in a box of oil absorbent everyday. As Mr Whiskers dozed off he felt warm and comfortable. Then he caught fire and sprinted through the neighborhood burning it to the ground.”

      • Festus

Mostly representative but Mr. WB deigns the product from any cow’s udder and prefers a fresh bowl of tall-cat water, delivered upon request.

      • Spudalicious

        How about Sir Fuzzy Buster?

  32. LCDR_Fish

Mojeaux, UCS, etc – just curious if you’ve ever looked at indiegogo or kickstarter for publishing? I’ll admit I don’t often see novels there (vs comics, movies, etc), but I was impressed by Blake Northcott’s “North Valley Grimoire”.

Really fun story with a lot of great production value in the HC edition that was released. (I think it helps that she’s exceptionally friendly on social media and has cred with writing comics and other stuff – and cute).

    • Mojeaux

My publishing partner and I have talked about Kickstarter for projects we take on together (http://peculiarpages.com), but we’ve never done it. A libertarian author Travis Corcoran (@MorlockP) has used it successfully.

My personal problem with Kickstarter is that I have nothing of increasing value to promise. For instance, I intend to do a limited edition hardcover of Teh Bewbies, but … how many? Would anybody want it? What can I offer that someone would value enough that they would give me money?

Same with Patreon. I can’t come up with a salary’s worth of content every month. What do people value of me? I just don’t know.

      • LCDR_Fish

I think for patreon…it’s what folks are willing to pay – I support friends via patreon since it’s an easy way to give something to them casually. If you have tiers like $1/month or $2/month and you just post snippets (like UCS does here) or polls — maybe offer higher tiers for folks to suggest character descriptions, etc.

I mean…iowahawk has a patreon with a 102 folks and he doesn’t produce any actual content for it (that I’m aware of). Let people decide what’s it’s worth them to support you – doesn’t cost you anything.

But (IGG is generally recommended over kickstarter – depending on the coverage) – since they take a smaller percentage and you can also potentially keep the cash even if you don’t reach the min amount – but yeah, NVG only had hard copy/soft copy/etc tier levels – you could keep it really simple – just ebook and hard copy and nothing else.

      • Chipping Pioneer

Huh. I guess publishing teh bewbies means something different on this site.

      • Mojeaux

        Teh Bewbies

Like this upcoming book is Cods & Cuntes. Yeah, I give my books nicknames.

    • UnCivilServant

Not sure how that would work since the only visuals a novel is going to have is the cover, and these campaigns are very visual beasts as far as I can tell.

      • Mojeaux

It’s interesting you say that because I have wanted to illustrate my pirate book. I even interviewed a couple of art students at KC Art Institute, but it was too expensive. I would LOVE to have a graphic novel of book 1, or at least a storyboard.

I still don’t know how I’d drum up support for that.

      • LCDR_Fish

I’ve commissioned a lot of art before (mostly…inappropriate to share here with some exceptions). Found virtually all of them on DA – some longer projects too – I know good guys (depending on the style) for $50/page pencils…

One way (aside from lots of fan engagement) is to get a few pages done first and see if that drums up interest before officially starting something.

      • UnCivilServant

The catch 22 is publicity inertia. You need momentum to build momentum, and I would really like to know how it’s supposed to get started.

      • Mojeaux

I usually advise potential clients, if they ask me for artist recs, to go find someone on DA whose style they like and preferably who is young and hungry.

All the people I used to rec took off and don’t have time and are very expensive.

      • UnCivilServant

If I had reliable interior artists, it would be real easy to make graphic novel stories in either of my settings. But I don’t know how to sell such a thing to the public to make back the page rate paid to the artist.

I haven’t even recouped costs on “Beyond the Edge of the Map”

      • LCDR_Fish

NVG had a full page image every few chapters (old school) as well as some custom icons and graphics at chapter headings, etc.

Not a bad model either – and a LOT cheaper. (Also love the classically illustrated Del Rey Robert E Howard collections that have one or two pics per short story).

      • UnCivilServant

I suppose I can see that. I’m just frustrated that my numbers seem to be circling the drain these days and I’m not sure how I can get people’s attention, and purchases.

      • Mojeaux

You have to blog and tweet. FB has lots and lots and lots of pure readers—in fact, I’d venture a guess that that’s where most of them are. These are the people who gobble up books but don’t hang out on review sites.

I don’t really know what good Instagram is for authors or even musicians.

Wattpad is also good, but I can’t stand their format. I usually post the first 1/3 of my book on Wattpad.

      • UnCivilServant

I find I have nothing to say, so at most the social media output amounts to “I’m not dead”. interspersed by long periods of silence.

      • LCDR_Fish

Dunno….conventions plus pics on twitter? Blake Northcott and Bryan Edward Hill (and Morlock) are all fun to follow (rob kroese and others too)

Should probably buy some of their books when I have time too.

      • Mojeaux

I’ve bought MorlockP’s stuff, but haven’t read any of that, either. :/

    • UnCivilServant

Come to think of it, an ink drawing of the approach to the Dwarf ‘Winter Capital’ would be rather impressive.

From “Prince of the North Tower”

Eight. The dwarfs permitted me a party of eight, including myself. Naturally, I took Lenz, Soren, and Johan. I sent Volwin west and wished him well. He had his life and a Drakoi horse, and I hoped to never see him again. Hengist brought Lothar and Andrei Banik, and Vogel of all people. The sibilant sneak simply smiled and said he was still in the king’s service. Separated from the army and surrounded by hundreds of dwarf legionnaires, I felt more like a prisoner than a feted guest. The road marched as unerringly as ever through the foothills as it had in more level terrain. Causeways and tunnels bored through the landscape without regard for ravine or mountain.

However much dwarfs and humans had in common, there was a marked difference in base mentality. Humans were drawn to water, dwarfs were drawn to mountains. The important cities of every human realm were situated on a river or shore, but dwarfs obstinantly built in what struck me as the worst places possible. Kheimopolis was buried deep in the canyons of the mountains running along the southern edge of Quendaverus. The hills and cliffs flanking the approach to the city had been carved into collossal statuary over the centuries. The style and size varied from statue to statue, with smaller pieces tucked in wherever they would fit. Several had been abandoned partly complete, showing how the dwarfs carved the art from the head down. The stern visages looked more irate when attached to a head and shoulders only partly emerging from the ground. Outposts, villages and fortified manorial houses crowded the flat ground created from the tumbled down talus of the monumental art.

The Legnionary fortresses we stopped at to rest and resupply struck me as empty husks. Hollow shells undermanned and overextended. If properly defended, they might be as hard to crack as Castle Gefrah, but the legions were gutted, faded echoes of their previous strength. The thick walls might remain standing, but there was simply too much to defend. That would explain why Marcel thought he had a chance to win in his rebellion.

To say Kheimopolis climbed up the back wall of the canyon would be wrong. Kheimopolis was the back walls of the canyon. Cut into the living rock, with the excised material used to build up its towers and walls, it sprouted from the landscape like a glowering temple relief. Tall, angular structures with an aesthetic that matched their colossal statuary and runic script filled in the upper tiers of the city. Along the floor of the canyon in between sat dome-roofed buildings similar to those in Oakenyoke. The road passed through gargantuan gates and became a broad processional boulevarde between stone legionaires a hundred feet tall. Each statue was depicted in an archaic style of armor more akin to the ceremonial plate of the lictor or Lawspeaker.

Our entry into the city was intterupted by a single figure in black armor. The Lawspeaker held up a hand and challenged Arhelaus. “In whose glory do you return?”

“The Emperor and Empire,” the Protoarchistratigos said.

“Have you forgotten your duty to the gods? Turn back and honor them.”

“I shall make my offerings, and return.”

As the entire column turned, I rode closer to Ambassador Partanenen.

      “What was that?”

“Just an old tradition. A reminder to triumphant generals that they serve many powers higher than themselves.” He made a dismissive gesture. “It’s nothing unexpected.” Something about the Ambassador’s tone made me wonder if he wasn’t telling me everything.

    • Suthenboy

      Dont. do it.

I spent a whole summer about ten years ago building a deck. It is 60’x16′ and partly wraps around one side of the house. The pergola is 10′ high 8′ wide and wraps around 10′ on one side with a total length of 30′. I built an enclosed outdoor shower on one end and a slab for the hot tub to sit on. It was great for 5 or 6 years and like all things now it is just there. I still like the muscadine on the pergola and the kumquats lining one side but geez. A lot of money. A lot of work and maintenance is also a lot of money and work. Now the wood is really starting to show it’s age and I am thinking….nope, aint doing that again.

      • Suthenboy

Oh, I built it for the wife.

Yeah, dont show her the photos.

      • Festus

Just think if you had to deal with winter woes.

      • Suthenboy

Man, the weather here is brutal. Lots of precipitation in winter causing algae growth and blistering sun in summer. I think the sun damages the wood more than anything else. I try putting protective coatings and the dogs get dirty feet and run around and scrub it all off in no time.
The whole thing is a headache.

      • Festus

It’s the same if you lived on the West Coast here (near but not my problem). Wet, cold, funk. Moss and lichen take over everything. We’re drier up here but the temp changes are kinda brutal.

      • Gustave Lytton

Thanks for reminding me. Moss is out of control in the lawn right now. And that’s not the only place.

      • Spudalicious

I’ll take winter woes over the south and the ocean any day.

Hello everyone, long time no see! I’ve got the flu and I feel like I’m dying. Has anybody been to R/libertarian on Reddit. What a goddamn cesspool of Bernie supporters on there. Apparently the reddit admins banned the original mods and put Bernie sanders, supporters, as the admins. The carbon tax is the most libertarian policy ever apparently, open borders should be the number one goal and Trump is a dictator because he not going to be removed from office.

        Wut? Reddit has porn?

      • Festus

        Many Mamba-Jambas! Now that’s in my history…

      • Mojeaux

        No, TUMBLR is/was for porn.

        Reddit’s for sheer crazy.

That said, there are a few places on Reddit I hang out, but I mostly lurk.

      • Count Potato

That’s why I said “was,” but there are still accounts that have flown under the radar.

      • DEG

        That was a sad day.

      • DEG

There’s probably more crazy on reddit than porn, but there is lots of porn. I think some of the tumblr folks who posted their own creations moved over to reddit.

Rothbardsbitch: Just now seeing your reply to me above. You are not incoherent.

Mostly what you describe has happened in the last couple of hundred years, a period too short to culturally adapt in. The main differences in pre- and post- industrial economy are 1) the amount of available wealth and 2)the amount of available time. Both of these change incentives greatly.

I will have to think about this more. Thank you. I was looking for more thoughts on the matter beside my own.

I might be in the market for a truck soon, and, honestly, I have no idea where to start. Mid-sized? Full sized? New? Used?

Most of the time it will be a daily commuter, but it will also occasionally be used for towing, taking junk to the dump, or bringing home stuff from the Home Depot or garden centre. Maybe someday I’ll get some toys to haul around, too.

    Any suggestions?

    • Yusef drives a Kia

      Smart Car?

    • westernsloper

I am of the mind that 3/4 ton/heavy duty as they say is the only way to go with a truck. Full 8′ bed is the best. 1/2 ton may as well be driving a mini van. I am also of the mind never buy a new vehicle. Overpriced. The caveat being do it if you just have the money laying around in which case you would not be here asking questions but rather be knee deep in hookers and blow.

      • Festus

Just like you to say such a thing, Grandpa!

      • Sensei

        And diesel too, right?

Kidding aside if it’s going to be your daily 3/4 ton is a PITA unless you in a place that has parking lots sized the local Tractor Supply.

Every good libertarian is aware why we can’t get decent mid size pickup?

        Chicken Tax

The domestic manufacturers until recently wouldn’t make one domestically that will cannibalize full size truck sales and foreign manufacturers won’t bring one over when it will cost the same as a full size.

      • Festus

I miss those compact 4×4’s. Ford and Chevy had decent ones but the Toyotas were the cat’s ass. Dodge had one for awhile.

      • MikeS

Speaking of overpriced, let’s talk about 3/4 tons. For what Chip is describing, I can’t see any reason for a 3/4 ton. Or an 8′ bed for that matter. I’ve hauled plenty of building supplies with my 1/2 ton Silverado with a 6.5′ bed. …and tree branches, and dirt, and appliances, and…

      • Mojeaux

        Must agree.

My Ram is a 1/2 ton (crew cab) and I can haul 1.5 yd3 mulch/dirt flat and easily or 2 yd3 loading down and rounded above the side walls. Does just fine running to Home Depot and it has done duty as my daily driver when one of our other cars has been out of commission.

      • MikeS

I drive mine (2009 Ext. Cab) 108 miles round trip every day. I’d say it’s a great daily driver…unless gas mileage is one of the criteria.

    • AlmightyJB

      Toyota

      • Spudalicious

        He said truck.

    • Festus

Gently used, preferably a lease return Toyota Tacoma. Not too big, plenty of power and if you buy the crew cab you still get a six and a bit box. I think I can carry 3500 lbs or tow 5000.

      • Mojeaux

        I second lease return.

    • Gustave Lytton

How many passengers will you have? Do you have room on your property for a trailer? Do you park in a parking structure ever?

I’ve got a extended cab 1/2 ton with a six foot bed. It’s enough for just about most hauling (plywood/drywall sheets with a solid cargo strap, mulch/soil/gravel did a 1/4yard today, and can just throw dirty stuff in the bed) and still goes through drive through and most parking garages- I do have to pay attention to clearance signs. With a wife and dog, someday I wish it was a crew cab for a little more enclosed space. Smaller bed plus separate trailer, or… a dump trailer would be perfect.

Oh, I’ve brought 12′ molding strips or 2x4s home by running them through the rear slider.

Other thing is I have a plastic bed liner which is great most of the time but the raised grooves allow many things to slide around in the back.

      • Festus

Bed liner is a must. Back in the olden days it was just a sheet of plywood cut to form.

      • mikey

Never understood bed liners. It’s a truck bed FFS. If it’s one of those plastic inserts your bed is rotting underneith it unless you pull it regularly and cleam all the muck (which is being ground into the bed). Why protect the appearance of someting in a way that covers it so you can’t see it?
        /rant
Keep in mind I have a REAL trucl – bench seat rubber floor mats and the last windup windows in NA.
One a pickups’ most imprortand function BTW is as a work bench.

      • Mojeaux

Thanks! In addition to waking up on the wrong side of the bed without enough sleep although it was bad, I had a bitch of a project to start. I spent HOURS and then decided, “Hey, I’m going to send this to my client and see what he thinks before I invest any more time into it.”

Turns out, what I thought he wanted and what he really wanted were two different things and I was thrilled stupid. *I* thought he wanted an approximation of what he’d already done and that he just wanted it cleaned up a little. I hated it, but okay, it’s his money, so he gets what he wants. Well, that was NOT what he wanted. He’d put stuff in for placeholders for himself, and he hated it. Which is GREAT because doing what I want to do will take me about 1/3 of the time.

So between that and your old-man joke, I’m more perky than I was when I got up this morning.

  38. Mojeaux

I would like to get some guidance from you potheads those of you who imbibe in the devil’s lettuce for recreation or, more preferably, medicinal purposes.

My daughter has migraines. She’s had them for years. She also has joint pains. And nausea. And a whole host of other things we can’t run down. Sometimes I think she’s a hypochondriac because many times her flare-ups happen when she is expected to do dishes or other chores.

    But what if I’m wrong?

Anyway, we think her migraines are in large part caused by her glasses and our inability to get her a prescription that works, but she’s getting soft contacts and that may help. We’ve had every workup done known to man, including a brain MRI, which was normal.

The doctor thinks her nausea is either an ulcer or gastritis. She is taking famotidine and omeprazole for those in case that’s what it is (no, not had an EGD yet).

In the meantime, we’re still dealing with her joint pain.

My husband’s friend takes CBD oil for her fibromyalgia or MS or something like that and says it’s wondrous. There has been much talk of edibles lately and I’ve been following with interest. I think it’s LemonGrenade for whom edibles don’t do anything? Or maybe that’s the other way around. Anyway, for a couple of you, edibles don’t work and for another couple of you, they work too well.

So *I* am wondering about gummies. Mr. Mojeaux wonders about CBD oil (and how does one take that anyway?). Mr. Mojeaux thinks if we get her gummies, she’ll just eat them like, well, candy. Because they are.

    Any advice?

    • Yusef drives a Kia

CBD, no High, but a massive calming effect, it’s great for work, I can drive and chill, and it makes it easier to deal with customers, this equals life, try it

      • Mojeaux

        massive calming effect

That piqued my interest with regard to XY.

      • Yusef drives a Kia

I drove in SoCal so much i was losing my mind, at the same time, I didn’t want to work stoned,CBD keeps me calm, but no buzz, that comes after work, check it out, it can work, YMMV,

    • Yusef drives a Kia

Edibles do nothing for me, unless it’s CBD, that works…

    • Rhywun

Not a clue. I have never done any of that.

    • DenverJ

Experiment. I suspect smoking pot would not help with the headaches, and feel edibles are hard to properly dose. I would suggest trying CBD as a patch, drop, or liquid, just to see if it helps.

    • Festus

Didn’t you have plenty of troubles upon delivery? I’m thinking that she has to grow into this world and maybe she’s not quite there yet. I don’t say that as a shit-lord or any sort of medical expert but sometimes kids that have a hard time coming into this realm need more time to adjust. In any case, don’t start dosing XX with anything. It might blow over in a year or two. Fingers crossed, Sweet Mojo!

      • Mojeaux

16.5yo XX was the “easy” delivery. 14yo XY was the one who almost killed me. They’re both high maintenance but XY is taking most of my emotional energy and mental stamina.

16.5yo XX is the one with the multitudinous medical issues for several years, and the one I was asking for.

Then, when Yusef said the oil calms him down, I thought that might help XY too. Heaven knows, he needs it.

      • Festus

Sorry. Got them mixed up. In any case don’t listen to me. Festus never had any actual offspring, no matter how hard he tried at Miss Kitty’s…

    • mindyourbusiness

We tried CBD oil for my wife’s osteoarthritis and it worked – for a while. As a sleep aid apparently it does some good. The stuff is inexpensive enough that it’s worth a try.

    • Suthenboy

I am not making any recommendations or attempts at diagnosis. I will simply relate what happened to me.

About fifteen years ago I was diagnosed with severe rheumatoid arthritis. There are genetic and environmental factors. After reading as much as I could about it I had answers to a lot of questions. As a child I had chronic ear infections that were so painful they would paralyze me for days. I also had bouts of severe gut cramping…that came and went for years. I also had various joint and connective tissue pain that sometimes was quite debilitating. I was taken to every kind of sawbones there is over and over from 5 years old to 16 or 17 years old. No one had any explanation. No infections, fevers, nothing showed in blood work etc.

Occasionally for my whole life I would have more symptoms pop up then disappear. Finally at around 45 years old it showed up in the bloodwork. Mind you My R-factor was perfectly normal all of that time….until it wasn’t. It shot up like a rocket to unbelievable levels over two years after I had been diagnosed and begun a treatment regimen. The treatment regimen has made all of the symptoms nearly disappear but the R-factor remains sky high. All of the symptoms and joint damage have quit and I have exceeded my life expectancy by over twice. I live a mostly normal life where I was told I had very few years left and would spent them ini agony in a wheelchair.

All of those seemingly unconnected problems that I had as a child now make perfect sense.

If I were you, and I am not, perhaps the opinion of a rheumatologist might be of some value. Keep in mind hammers and nails and all that, but what could it hurt to just have a look?

      • Mojeaux

That is very helpful, thank you. I’ll do that. We’ve tried everywhere else…

      • Suthenboy

No one could put it together in my case until some of the symptoms began to be classic RA symptoms and that didn’t happen until I was nearly 45.

      • Mojeaux

Mr. Mojeaux is reading this thread and googling furiously.

      • Mojeaux

Bookmarked. I have wondered–and she has approached me about independently–whether her problems could be fibromyalgia.

      • Festus

    • KSuellington

You can get CBD in oil, tinctures, gummies and other edibles and balms. It’s worth a try as it does have a calming effect and is good for minor joint and inflammation pain relief. The stuff with THC would likely do more for migraine relief.

      • Festus

Every time I read “tinctures” I get a whiff of Mr. Majolabumm’s Travelling Carnival Show!

You like, or dislike, him all you want. Facts are facts.

      • Trigger Hippie: Hair Jizz

Never said he was. But he didn’t exactly stay healthy either. Which led to Carl Petersen to get the wrong idea that Bono, his back up, was a good enough replacement. I get why they went for Montana, they thought he could win them a championship with that great defense, but in the long run it set the franchise back many, many years. More Carl Petersen’s fault than, Joe’s, but it set a bad precedent for the franchise.

      • Spudalicious

Geez, dude. Poor Mojeaux has been down in the dumps all day, she finally starts perking up, and you just start kicking her in the teeth, over and over again. She can’t help it her team sucks. Lighten up on the poor woman.

We have to get the big money out of politics.

Democrat presidential candidates Michael Bloomberg and Tom Steyer spent a combined $340 million in the final quarter of 2019, according to Federal Election Commission (FEC) data released on Friday.

Both billionaire candidates far outspent their Democrat rivals, according to the FEC. Former New York City Mayor Bloomberg, whose campaign is almost entirely self-funded, spent more than $188 million in the fourth quarter of 2019 and ended the fundraising period with $12 million cash available.

Steyer, a California businessman, spent approximately $153 million in the fourth quarter and ended it with $5.4 million cash available.

    • DenverJ

For $1 million, I’ll tell them how to wrap up the Glibertarian vote.

    • one true athena

I love how Steyer’s commercials are all “outsider” who has nothing to do with the machine of Those Politicians, when he gave millions and millions of dollars in the 2018 midterms (all to Dems of course) alone. Because he doesn’t want politics as usual, dontchaknow.

oh, yes, and “big business is destroying Democracy” or some such garbage. Sure, Tom, please tell us more about yourself.

      He is such a tool.

      • KSuellington

I loathe Steyer. What a disingenuous scumbag hypocrite. His commercials make me want to puke and they are all over the teevee, internet and radio here. The guy made his money in fossil fuels and now wants to screw over the plebes for green energy pie in the sky (that he now has invested in heavily). Him and Bloomer have been spending like crazy in California, I don’t ever remember seeing so many political ads for a national candidate before. Let me spend their money, it keeps them from spending it on their other liberty killing projects. Neither is going anywhere.

Mark my words, they are going to attack ice as well. Give ’em time, they won’t need much. I’d bet on it.

    • Gustave Lytton

Also, why are they using plastic cups instead of paper cups anyways? Souvenirs?

      • DenverJ

Because ain’t nobody drinking beer out of a paper cup.

    • Suthenboy

The amount of electricity required to refine aluminum is many orders of magnitude greater than the energy required to produce plastic.
This is a perfect example of the counterproductive / destructive tactics of the left. I hear people say “Ooooh you are too cynical! They are not trying to dismantle our culture and destroy everything that gives individuals power over their own lives. No no no”

To which I respond “Well, if they were what would they do differently?”

      • Rhywun

To which I respond “Well, if they were what would they do differently?”

        Nice. Stealing that.

      • Timeloose

You not wrong about the cost of initial manufacturing from raw materials, but Al recycling is very efficient. Plastics are not so great, you can’t make a lot of products with recycled plastics. Beer cans can be recycled over and over again.

    • creech

Speaking of trash, hasn’t it always been a point of honor for conservative rallies (e.g. Tea Party) to leave a site cleaner than when they arrived? News coverage from after the Trump rally in Wildwood, NJ showed trash everywhere, literally mounds of it, I suspect there might have been some Trumper Democrats in the crowd.

      • Timeloose

        It is NJ after all.

  46. Rebel Scum

    Lawrence O’Donnell, constitutional scholar.

O’Donnell began by saying, “When you’re watching the United States Senate on days like today. It’s always important to remember that you are not watching democracy in action. The Senate is now, always has been, and always will be, an anti-democratic institution. Because the Senate does not represent people. The House of Representatives represents people. That’s why it’s called the people’s House. The U.S. Senate represents land. And because people are not evenly distributed over our land, the 760,000 people of North Dakota get two United States senators, and the 39 million people of California get two United States senators. California gets 53 members of the House of Representatives, and North Dakota gets one. And that is fair.”

He added, “And so, to the people on Twitter today who found themselves despairing at the Senate’s anti-democratic action, and said things like, democracy died today. No. American democracy didn’t die today. American democracy once again revealed its most serious structural flaw: the United States Senate.”

That’s kind of the point. The House is the house of the people. The Senate is supposed to be the house of the States and not subject to the passions of the people. It is almost like the entire system of US government is designed to inhibit rash decisions and change, among other things such as being limited in scope and authority.

    • Gustave Lytton

Representing states? No, didn’t you read him? They represent land.

      • Yusef drives a Kia

        Land=States? Hmmmm…

    • Yusef drives a Kia

Skin the Fucker Alive, better than a nuke….
      /Fucking idiot

    • Urthona

Except most Americans have been polling against impeachment since November so the House is undemocratic as well.

    • Rhywun

Somewhere along the way the concept of the states as sovereign entities got lost. Or, you know, deliberately stamped upon and trashed. Same end result.

      • DenverJ

Lincoln the dictator? Twas an interesting question, whether freedom required accepting the enslavement of others.

    • Spudalicious

Lawrence O’Donnell…the guy who openly admits he’s a straight up Marxist….

      • Festus

I honestly can’t tell them apart anymore without a Dick Tracy “Rogues Gallery”. I mean Scarsborough is “Smallface”, Acosta is “Whingey”, Stelter is “Bag-o-Dicks” and Tucker is “The Smarm”. Don Lemon? Even I won’t go there…

Senate Republicans have let the American people down, giving Donald Trump permission to conspire with foreign governments to undermine your vote. The GOP has shown where they stand—and it’s not with you.

Unlike Democrats, who are against any means to attempt to ensure the integrity of elections.

    • Festus

“They’ll undermine your vote!” she exclaimed while elbowing Mary Strong Feather aside on her way to her rightful place in the line.

    • Q Continuum

“giving Donald Trump permission to conspire with foreign governments”

I thought we were a Representative Republic?
    /Democracy bad!!!!

    • Festus

You should try it up here. Supreme Court? Prime Minister just basically pulls them outta his ass. No fuss, no muss.

      • Yusef drives a Kia

Canadia? I heard they have a living Document, whatever that means,

      • Festus

It lives. In a Sugar Free-like realm but it lives.

  49. Yusef drives a Kia

Man this place can be a nice studio,

    • Yusef drives a Kia

      ummmm,?

    • DEG

      More of her please.

    • Mojeaux

Ugh. I can feel QEII’s facepalm from here.

      • Festus

Three Tom Collins rather than two today. Poor old dear.

    • Yusef drives a Kia

And they call it, Cucking the Prince!

      • Sensei

Pretty soon he is going be on his own second wedding.

    • AlmightyJB

Great. I guess that will be another evening I’ll be locked in the dungeon while my wife watches that show.

  50. Festus

What? Egg cartons stapled to the walls and never, ever any chicks coming to our gigs? “Shut up Mom! I told you they were coming over! … yes I’ll feed the cats… Get off my back!” ONETWOTHREEFOUR https://youtu.be/m38EdJeM6dU

    • Count Potato

I’ve seen them, but I don’t remember much. Too much hardcore sounds the same.

      • Festus

Was supposed to be a reply further up. D.O.A is something I liked for a limited time.

  51. Vacuous

I came across Trumpy Bear commercials today. I only beloved its real because it was on tv. Seeing it anywhere online, I’d be convinced it is a good parade video. What are the benefits of the commercial? Is it a political ad, without being labeled one? Is it to troll people watching tv? Or is it advertising to to trolls to troll others?

    • AlmightyJB

Never heard of it. Not that I need to.

    • Festus

I think it is all of those things plus a side of greed. Remember all that Pope-ish nonsense that got commercialized back in the 80’s?

    • Rebel Scum

It’s great because you know it’s ridiculous, it knows it’s ridiculous, and it knows that you know it’s ridiculous.

      • Lord Digby

        So much this.

      • Festus

That means that we are ridiculous… Whaaaaa?

  52. DEG

I really should go to sleep.

    • Lord Digby

      And miss the late-night shenanigans?

    • Mojeaux

      But…why?

  53. hayeksplosives

I am late to the party (as is tradition), but I wanted to echo that, Damn, that’s a great patio!! Many memories just eating to be made…

And Suthenboy is a philosopher for the ages.

And I am voting for Trump.

    • Lord Digby

      QFT–all of it.

    • MikeS

      …and Go ‘Niners.

      • hayeksplosives

IDK. I just hope for a well matched game with neutral officiating.

      • Festus

I won’t be watching but I’ll echo that comment. Let’s hope for a clean game that doesn’t balance on a bad call. I don’t care one way or the other but if we have to listen to the butt-hurt for the next few days… then it becomes a problem.

      • Lord Digby

I’ll put in my $0.02 in the next thread…

        Oooh–it’s up now!!

      • Festus

        WHOOO-oore!

Busy, busy day. Still rearranging the house, gave a bunch of stuff away on NextDoor, selected which fruit trees are going to be purged from the yard.

Stepsons are arriving in the wee hours Tuesday, so I am ONLY watching football tomorrow, taking Monday off for cleanup, bed making, and recovery.

  55. hayeksplosives

In California, when you register to vote, you have to declare a political party so that you can vote in that party’s primary without just acting as a spoiler to pick a weak opponent.

I didn’t grok that when I registered and they wanted to know my party. I was kinda testy with the clerk and said my party identification was Old Whig.

The clerk giggled and said, “No seriously, an actual party.” I grumbled and said Republican. She had no idea that Whig was a real thing. Sad.

My disgraced congresscritter Duncan Hunter JR resigned, so the GOP primary in San Diego actually matters.

    • Lord Digby

you have to declare a political party so that you can vote in that party’s primary without just acting as a spoiler to pick a weak opponent the State knows who the kulaks and wreckers are.

    • Festus

Heh. Up here when you pay (or not pay) your taxes you are registered to vote. You show up, let them see your ID, they cross your name off and away ya go. We’ve had multi ID for about ten years and I don’t seem to recall street sweeps. I think the problem down there is the myriad of ways that some assholes can and do game the system.

      • Lord Digby

Well, the system is a game, so…

Also, you have a dedication awaiting you in the next post, Fes.

    • J. Frank Parnell

IIRC if you register without selecting a political party you can ask for the ballot for whichever party you want when you get to the polling station.

    • Toxteth O’Grady

      Pssst: vote for Carl deMaio!

Dems and Libs have open primaries; Rs’ are closed.

Culling fruit trees? Whyyy? (unless grapefruit)

      • hayeksplosives

They were planted far too close together and will now compete and nothing will thrive.

      • Toxteth O’Grady

        Ah. Carry on. 🙂
