Economics Corner with Paul Krugman and Winston’s Mom

Seriously. Its like none of these people ever delt with a house full of whores with chlamydia.

I found one without a paywall motherfuckas!

If you want a quick summary of the state of play over fiscal stimulus legislation, here it is: Republicans insist that we should fight a plague with trickle-down economics and crony capitalism. Democrats, for some reason, don’t agree, and think we should focus on directly helping Americans in need.

And if legislation is stalled, as it appears to be as I write this (although things change fast when we’re on COVID time), it’s because Mitch McConnell, the Senate majority leader, is holding needy Americans hostage in an attempt to blackmail Democrats into giving Donald Trump a $500 billion slush fund.

Yes, Krugnuts, I’m happy you learned your lesson from every fucking time you were wrong about everything previous to this point, by adding this little caveat. Lest the normies stop taking you seriously.

First, let’s talk about the nature of the economic crisis we face. At the worst point in the 2007-2009 recession, America was losing around 800,000 jobs per month. Right now, we’re probably losing several million jobs every week.

What’s causing these job losses? So far it’s not what usually happens in a recession, when businesses lay off workers because consumers aren’t spending enough. What we’re seeing instead are the effects of social distancing: restaurants, entertainment venues and many other establishments have been closed to limit the spread of the coronavirus.

Wrong again shitstain. Should this all go to shit, this is exactly the same as every previous recession. The history of every economic downturn:

Step 1: government identifies flaccid, shapeless boogerman.
Step 2: government insists on it can save you from flaccid, shapeless boogerman.
Step 3: Somebody reasonable tells government it has no ability to do anything against the flaccid, shapeless boogerman and any action taken will inevitably make the situation worse than if the government just played with its flaccid, shapeless dick.
Step 4: government takes action against boogerman, in spite of step 3.
Step 5: We all get fucked, but its the person in step 3’s fault the boogerman did it.

And we neither can nor should bring those jobs back until the pandemic has faded. What this tells us is that right now our highest priority isn’t job creation, it’s disaster relief: giving families and small businesses that have lost their incomes enough money to afford necessities while the shutdown lasts. Oh, and providing generous aid to hospitals, clinics and other health care providers in this time of incredible stress.

Now, while social distancing is currently driving employment destruction, there will eventually be a second, more conventional round of job losses as distressed families and businesses cut back on spending. So there is also a case for stimulus to sustain overall spending — although helping Americans in need will provide much of that stimulus, by also helping them continue to spend.

What the ever loving fuck are you talking about? People are still spending money. They just are buying online in such quantities that Amazon is hiring 100,000 workers., Typical prog, when all else fails—PROG DEEPER AND HARDER.

So what’s in the stimulus bill that McConnell is trying to ram through the Senate? It grudgingly provides some, but only some, of the aid Americans in distress will need. Funny, isn’t it, how helping ordinary Americans is always framed as a “Democratic demand”? And even there the legislation includes poison pills, like a provision that would deny aid to many nonprofit institutions like nursing homes and group homes for the disabled.

…and municipal museums in New York. Team Cuck had the nearly identical bill filled with the same bullshit, but apparently you missed where Team Cunt shat all over it because it didn’t include enough of their bullshit.

But it also includes a $500 billion slush fund for corporations that the Trump administration could allocate at its discretion, with essentially no oversight. This isn’t just terrible policy; it’s an insult to our intelligence.

Your an insult to our intelligence.

After all, it would be hard to justify giving any administration that kind of power to reward its friends and punish those it considers enemies. It’s almost inconceivable that anyone would propose giving such authority to the Trump administration.

Remember, we’ve had more than three years to watch this administration in action. We’ve seen Trump refuse to disclose anything about his financial interests, amid abundant evidence that he is profiting at the public’s expense. Trump’s trade war has been notable for the way in which favored companies somehow manage to get tariff exemptions while others are denied. And as you read this, Trump is refusing to use his authority to require production of essential medical gear.

So it would be totally out of character for this administration to allocate huge sums fairly and in the public interest.

Cronyism aside, there’s also the issue of competence. Why would you give vast discretionary power to a team that utterly botched the response to the coronavirus because Trump didn’t want to hear bad news? Why would you place economic recovery efforts in the hands of people who were assuring us just weeks ago that the virus was contained and the economy was “holding up nicely”?

Boy, your TOP.MEN. analysis of Trump’s pandemic response is aging like dick cheese on the sidewalk.

Finally, we’ve just had a definitive test of the underlying premise of the McConnell slush fund — that if you give corporations money without strings attached they will use it for the benefit of workers and the economy as a whole. In 2017, Republicans rammed through a huge corporate tax cut, which they assured us would lead to higher wages and surging business investment.

This isn’t a typical market downturn cause by organic market forces putting people out of work. Given the government effectively told them they can’t do business with anyone, the only way they stay open is if they lay off workers. Now nobody is “allowed” to work even if they want to. Its either give them cash to pay their laid off workers accordingly or setup yet another welfare scam paid for by Americans who probably aren’t born yet.

And If you want to play that “debt doesn’t matter” bullshit this time around I assure you will literally be nailed to that cross. Crucifixion 2: the Krugnut Boogaloo.

Neither of these things happened; instead, corporations basically used the money to buy back their own stock. Why would this time be any different?

Blah blah blah blah, stock buy backs, blah blah blah blah, stock buybacks, blah blah blah stock buybacks eat a bag if rancid dicks stock buybacks, blah blah blah.

As I write this, Republicans are ranting that Democrats are sabotaging the economy by refusing to pass McConnell’s bill — which is a bit rich for those who remember the GOP’s scorched-earth opposition to everything Barack Obama proposed. But in any case, if McConnell really wants action, he could get it easily either by dropping his demand for a Trump-controlled slush fund or by passing the stimulus bill House Democrats are likely to offer very soon.

And maybe that will happen within a few days. As I said, we’re now living on COVID time. But right now Republicans seem dead set on exploiting a crisis their own president helped create by his refusal to take the pandemic seriously.

Of course you’d be fine if it was an asshole YOU like controlling the slush fund. I don’t vote, but I hope you get four more years of DEEPER AND HARDER TRUMP.

So Who’s slush fund is it? Trumps or McConnells? I has Confuuz,

    • Winston's Mom

It ain’t yours, thats for damn sure.

Hey Yusef gets a super sexy $1200 slush fund to use as he sees fit!

  3. Q Continuum

Krugman, who never met a government dollar he didn’t want to spend, complaining about an eleventy skrillion dollar spending orgy is rich.

I feel sorry for Winston’s Mom having to try and come up with something funny since he’s way beyond parody at this point.

He’s rich in irony–as opposed to goldy, or, logic.

Where’s “Winston’s Mom”‘s photo come from? Amazingly, Google just points back here when I search by image.

      Absolutely Fabulous.

    • Winston's Mom

      Its fucking amazing isn’t it?

      • LemonGrenade

It drove me nuts the first several times I saw Winston’s Mom, so I had to do some digging. I love this series.

    • straffinrun

Ha! What happens when you search image Krugman’s face?

        I get this one.

        What, he is?

People like cunt. I think festering syphilitic sore is more apt.

      • Nephilium

One of my favorite things from TOS (at least I believe that’s where it started) was the line, “They have neither the depth nor the warmth to be a cunt”. It has made it into my monthly insult list.

      • straffinrun

Don’t think that’s originally from TOS. Can’t remember exactly, but I think it’s from a movie.

      • Nephilium

Ok, I don’t feel so bad for first hearing it at TOS then.

      • straffinrun

At first I thought it was a Hitchens line.

      • straffinrun

I didn’t understand a single word they said.

        I remember it as:

‘Seriously. Its like none of these people ever delt with a house full of whores with chlamydia.’

This reminds me of possibly the strangest words I’ve ever spoken:

“Am I seriously the only person in this basement with pubic hair?!”

    • Crusty Juggler

““Am I seriously the only person in this basement with pubic hair?!””

That’s what you get for attending an OMWC party.

      • Trigger Hippie

What was most disturbing was the sight of a nude OMWC.

        Smooth as a turtle shell.

  6. LemonGrenade

I feel better knowing someone is as pissed as I am about this.

    • Nephilium

Our cower in home was just extended through May 1st. My rage is reaching peak levels. I’ve had to delete so many comments in work chats (so I still have a job when all this shit is over).

      • Yusef drives a Kia

We get parole on April 30th, HAHA!.. wait….

      • LemonGrenade

I yelled at my mom today when she called it a quarantine. Said, “they quarantine sick people! This is a fucking lockdown.” I was asked nicely to stop referring to it as ‘moo goo gai panic’ at work today, as well. Ooops.

      • Nephilium

I’ve refused to use quarantine. It’s either been lockdown or cower in place for me.

Although I did get a ticket in my queue today that was a request for “access to the bartender”. I mentioned it in the team chat, and didn’t think until later that someone might think I was making fun of English as a second language people. I can translate a lot of garbage when it comes to phone systems (trees usually means menus; loops generally mean ACD queues; etc.) I have no idea what access to the bartender could mean, or even what autocorrect could turn into that.

But in these trying times, I think we all need more access to the bartender.

      • DEG

But in these trying times, I think we all need more access to the bartender.

        Yes.

      • hayeksplosives

        Keep fighting the good fight.

      • LemonGrenade

On the plus side, when I was asked to stop using moo goo gai panic, and I said okay, “bat soup flu” they backed off.

      • Sean

        ???

      • dbleagle

I have been using Kung Flu. No verbal pushback yet but many stares and shocked looks.

      • Tulip

        June 10. Those tickets.

      • Tulip

        Good grief autocorrect. Those fuckers

      • Nephilium

Our May 1st is only the new tentative. It was supposed to end April 6th. So now my two nephews birthdays are ruined, my birthday is ruined, my trip to Europe is highly unlikely.

There’s always the happy hour tomorrow at least. You bunch are the last bastion of sanity I have. Think how fucking scary that is.

      • Tundra

If it makes you feel any better, right this very second I was supposed to be on a flight to Prague.

        Fuck.

      • Nephilium

It does not. Wednesday I was supposed to be on a plane to Vegas for Viva (which was cancelled). Two weeks ago was the first St. Patrick’s Day I’ve worked since I can remember (fuck, I went to Catholic schools which tried once to hold classes on 3/17).

Besides, knowing other people are suffering with me doesn’t make me feel better, it just irritates me more.

      • LemonGrenade

I already missed my trip to NYC to see my peeps at the office, and my camping trip/spring break/son’s birthday was canceled because the country is shitting its pants, too. I say this not to make you feel better, but to let you know I’m just as mad as you.

      • Tejicano

Heck, I was supposed to be getting some equipment ready for sale at a gun show in Albuquerque.

      • egould310

That makes way more sense now.

      • Not Another Naked Digby

        Good grief autocorrect.

Heh! That’s a funny motherticket, right there.

      • straffinrun

No way people last that long. Your governor is insane.

      • Nephilium

If you want true terror, listen to the Ohio broadcast today. You’ve got Dr. Amy Acton talking about hoping there’s a summer, while she gushes over being able to use the governor’s fucking pen to sign the lock down order extension until May. In general, I’m a non-violent man, but when this shit ends, the first motherfucker in a bar who starts bragging about turning someone in is probably going to be given a stern talking to by me, which may involve physical aids.

      • Bob Boberson

I had my first run-in with a friend who isn’t skeptical about the entire thing. Her Dad is (most likely) terminally ill so she’s highly emotional about people “doing whatever they want” and breaking social distancing bullshit. I tried my best to empathize but at a visceral level I wanted to tell her to FOS.

      • SUPREME OVERLORD trshmnstr

I’ve stopped discussing it with people. Too much casual acceptance of this bullshit as the cost of not having people dying in the streets.

It’s really interesting how it splits down party lines. All of the democrats think this is the apocalypse, everybody else is more skeptical.

      • Nephilium

My parents are both high risk, and have apparently been doing the proper self isolation. The rest of my family has me and the girlfriend as the oldest (42/43). As it’s just the older generation who appear to be at high risk from this, my sympathy is quickly running out. Fuck, at what point is the Logan’s Run scenario the better economic option?

      • Bob Boberson

I texted my brother today that the food riots are going to be awesome. I don’t understand how people don’t see that you can’t slow down (or outright stop) production in one sector of the economy and not have it eventually slow down the others.

      • Gustave Lytton

‘And we neither can nor should bring those jobs back until the pandemic has faded.’

Meanwhile, my essential job has officially been rendered nonessential for the foreseeable future thanks to the precautionary principle advocated by gilded shitstains like Krugman.

But hey, fuck me, right? Who cares if I can’t pay my own way and am too proud and ideologically driven to accept a handout in a few months once my cash dies up.

I should just grift the system like everybody else.

    ONE.CHILD.

    • Nephilium

Don’t worry Trigger Hippie. My call center IT job is double essential.

At this point, take every government hand out you can. Hell, for the first time in my life I helped someone apply for unemployment (the call centers I used to offer as jobs aren’t really hiring now).

      • Trigger Hippie

Nah, fuck that. I’d rather work cash jobs in the sticks via Craigslist for more reasonable people and not claim taxes on those jobs than go on the dole.

        Manopause.

I spent the day with an off and on mild headache. I’m stubbornly sticking to, “it’s because you had too many beers last night, it’s just a hangover.” Hope you’re doing okay, dude.

      • Count Potato

        Thanks.

Definitely not a hangover since I haven’t drank since Tuesday, and that was less than usual.

      Fuck yeah.

      • Charles Easterly

Alien invasions indeed may be necessary (from the professor, not myself).

I hope WM that you will not be uncomfortable with my posting (yet again upon the Glibertarian website) “Economics in One Lesson by Henry Hazlitt < a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eyIfEpNfU2U" because it directly relates to your article.

Professor Krugman's aliens surely might shatter any number of windows.

  19. UnCivilServant

Anyone know of a printer that doesn’t print in China? I’m trying to crunch the numbers for a potential indiegogo campaign to extend the reach of the remaining fantasy books, but I need numbers to crunch.

    • commodious spittoon

Just get a Brothers printer. If you want to print in color you’ll need to look for colored Brothers.

    • Nephilium

I knew of some printers here in Cleveland. But back when I was there last they were primarily doing Adam and Eve catalogs.

      • UnCivilServant

I found a few online. The print cost per book evidently scales with volume, which is infuriating when trying to decide on what price point to estimate.

    • pistoffnick

One of the guys I hunt deer with is a printer. He’s a dirty Wisconnie. I can send him your e-mail if you like?

      • UnCivilServant

Do you know what kind of printing and volume he or his place of work can handle? Or should I just ask him?

    • UnCivilServant

Going with a high per unit cost estimate, the funny thing is my random ass-pull stretch goal numers are pretty darn close to the likely cost.

      Now I doubt my estimates.

      • UnCivilServant

Ah, there was my problem, I forgot the transaction fees.

      • Tejicano

        “my random ass-pull stretch goal”

      • UnCivilServant

Stretch goals are a crowdfunding term for additional perks if the funds raised exceed the goal by a certain amount.

When I first came up with a schema for how a book might be put into an indiegogo campaign, I threw out some random values which ended up really close to what the estimates are.

    • UnCivilServant

      Dammit.

I’m staring at the campaign creation screens, and I have no idea how to write this up to sell the idea of buying into the books.

    MADISON (WLUK)

The number reported by the state Department of Health Services was 199 more than the 1,351 reported as of Tuesday. That is an increase of 14.7%.

    OMG WE ALL GONNA DIE!

The state reports 24 deaths in all

Oh, that was a waste of soiled pants.

No one under the age of 40 has died so far, and no one under the age of 10 has tested positive.

As of today’s update which is yesterdays numbers, CO has 97 deaths. 90 of them being over the age of 60. We have 21 “outbreaks” in long term care facilities which is obviously a huge problem for the people in those facilities but I am highly doubtful it was the virus that offed most of those people. I really want someone to tell me how many people die in long term care facilities every day. The state does not disclose how many deaths were in those facilities but by all means, lets shut the state down because we have a problem in nursing homes. I don’t want to sound cold hearted, but jfc it is ridiculous.

    • hayeksplosives

      • Don Escaped Texas

There’s a pistol range in the Pyramid; did we talk about that? I feel bad.

It was either pistols or beer when you were here; beer winning out wasn’t the worst thing.

      • Nephilium

It was mentioned. Again, it’s been over 25 years since I’ve fired a gun.

It had been less then 24 hours since I had a beer. And going out for beers allows me to show some of my knowledge off. 🙂

    • Nephilium

Personally? I’ve been eating out and buying from local breweries a lot more then I usually do. Moved up from eating out (maybe) once a week to multiple times a week, and ordering/buying beer from local breweries every week.

I’ve also been out driving when I can, and riding on the few days that the weather has been nice enough to allow it (within my parameters).

The extension to May 1st I hope will be the breaking point up here. I hope…

That dude is cuck’d. She’s riding on Daddy’s brand.

      • Nephilium

So… she’s going to Church on Easter, in violation of her father’s order right? I mean as a devout Catholic, holy days of obligation are pretty high up there.

And I thought Taft was bad…

      • Nephilium

Fuck, if this all blows over and the bars can open again, I’ll be the crazy motherfucker who will go off the first time someone talks about how “DeWine saved the state”.

Most of my family are “essential”, the girlfriend and my niece have been the only family to lose jobs due to this so far.

      • Tres Cool

People talk about “whataboutism”. But this is a prime example of 1 state shitting their panties, and the (media) asking the governor next door- “THEY just did this- what are you going to do about it?” And its been mentioned, but not wanting to look weak, that guy “does something”.

I honestly kinda blame “The Walking Dead”. Despite being a soap opera with zombies as a backdrop, it was wildly popular, and has made a lot of people believe in the whole pandemic thing.

      • Nephilium

The fact I’m seeing positive articles about DeWine in my newsfeed tells me two things:

        1) The algorithms really don’t get me.
        2) His lockdown orders are popular

I’m happy about one of these things.

      • Tres Cool

About every 2 days, I informally poll half dozen friends of mine, 2 of whom work in health care, and I ask them “do you know anyone that has CoVID-19 infection?” That answer was “No”, until 2 days ago, when I polled my former employee, and he said “Yes”. I said “who?” He said, “me”. He lives in NYC- Brooklyn. His diagnosis wasnt due to a test- his doc said “If this comes back positive, you have to go to a hospital, and you dont want to be there right now.” As of this morning he said, ” I had the flu”

      • Nephilium

I’ve avoided much drama with the family (sister works at the Cleveland Clinic, BIL is a fire chief, parents are both high risk). I think there’s a higher chance my nephews learn 80’s discipline the longer this goes on, and my parents are properly isolating (definitely not what I was expecting).

My niece is enjoying her time off that’s getting her unemployment… but she’s also a Bernie fan, so I failed at some level.

      • Tres Cool

Their kid isnt your direct responsibility. Your job is to poison her.
Take a spin on the bike tomorrow- I may air up the Astro-Daimler and do 6 miles or so

    • RAHeinlein

I haven’t done crap either – we take walks, purchase take-out from some restaurants we want to support, complain to my son’s college, praise our Governor to anyone who will listen b/c Iowa isn’t in full shut-down.

Haven’t sent any emails to elected officials (complaints or praise), no protest signs in my yard, Glibs is my only social media (other than Linkedin, which is just a professional address book).

Fat and lazy is just no way to go through Covid-19.

      • AlmightyJB

As long as the daily death counts are trending up, there is not going to be any traction on mass disobedience. I am telling everyone I talk to that we can protect the at risk population without putting the 99% of us not at risk under house arrest. The feeling I get here is that people are willing to give this thing until the end of the month, so it will be interesting to see if there will be a meaningful amount of people at that point willing to have a giant party on the Statehouse lawn when Here DeWine announces mid-June as the new target. If every bar and restaurant opens and everyone shows up, there’s not shit he can do.

      • Nephilium

Fuck, I’ve got a pile of vacation days to use. I’m willing to go sit on the fucking statehouse lawn drinking if others want to join me.

      • UnCivilServant

        In Ohio?

        Not really sure.

      • AlmightyJB

If it comes to that, I’ll call the local radio station and try and rile up some folks.

      • Tres Cool

As long as Ohio refuses to post ages associated with CoVID-19 dead people (who we’re gonna die anyhow), I dont trust the state (state).

      • Tres Cool

But death counts, when they attribute every 95 year-old thats got a broken hip but tests CoVID-19, to the CoVID-19, are going to soar.
        Which is what they want.

I could easily be CoVID-19 + right now (and asymptomatic) and walk out in the front yard and blow my brains out. What would the media say?
        “Complications due to coronavirus”

    • kinnath

I send a nasty email to my elected representative telling her to shut up about the Governor not locking down the state.

Home Depot. Office Depot. Dairy Queen.

      Oh, and the therapist.

      • Nephilium

Careful about the JoAnn’s. Hobby Lobby caved to pressure here in Ohio.

      • AlmightyJB

It was cease and desist order from the AG.

      • Tres Cool

Did you see my link about Montgomery County Board of Health? They’re conducting “compliance inspections” accompanied by law enforcement.

      • Nephilium

Did you hear the bit about “Compliance Boards” that are now part of Ohio law, but not really, because there’s no appeal and they don’t know who’s going to be part of them yet.

Rule of law is not only dead, the state is pissing on it.

      • Tres Cool

Well, its also how they rigged the marijuana licensing boards.

Don’t know about that – it’s in the strip center on Taywood just off 48 (just north of the dam.)

    • westernsloper

Do what ever the hell I want? Strangely, my normal behavior is similar to a lock down other than they told me I couldn’t go to work and sent me home.

    • grrizzly

There’s no lockdown in Massachusetts. I walk or drive to stores whenever I feel like doing it. On Sunday we even drove to a neighboring state to pick up a laptop at Best Buy with an explicit purpose of avoiding paying the sales tax. Bizarrely, that was probably the first time I did this in twenty years of living here.

    • DEG

I’ve found every excuse I can to get out of the house… though it all amounts to things that asshole in Concord deemed essential.

I have gone out for take-out a bit more often than I used to eat at local restaurants in an attempt to keep a few I like afloat.

    • Grosspatzer

Pick up coffee and bagels at the local shop. They’re not sure they can stay open much longer. That place needs to survive – where else can you find these two things on the wall:

      – Award to owner from local church for donations and service to said establishment
      – Autographed photo of owner with Ron Jeremy

    • Gustave Lytton

Mentioned it yesterday or the day before. They’re also restricting sales of hand sanitizer, sanitizing wipes, and gloves.

    • Heroic Mulatto

3M just got DPAed, Amazon wants to avoid the same fate.

      • Gustave Lytton

Can a retailer get DPAd? Because Amazon really doesn’t produce anything themselves.

I’m just more annoyed they don’t offer the 15 packs on the website. My other option for home delivery is Sibling Revelry which have some decent beers, but if I had to chose, Fat Heads wins every day.

  27. Private Chipperbot

Ladies (heh) and gentlemen. I have a one time rant. This is stupid. My soon to be senior in high school cannot get surgery or a brace for a torn ACL because essential shit had been cancelled. He will limp into his last year of school to kiss scholarship offers goodbye.

My hard as nails daughter made varsity as a sophomore and watched it turn to dust when they cancelled school for the year.

They both cried today when they heard school was done for the year. Telling them the reaction to this virus is insane does them no good. I hate panic and I hate people who perpetuate it. Thank you. Goodnight.

    • RAHeinlein

I’m very sorry to hear that P Chip – I’ve seen a lot of nonsense about how the younger generations aren’t impacted by this and it’s bullshit.

      Best wishes to your family.

    • Nephilium

As an asshole, make sure they understand that panic is what ruined their year.

Then watch Logan’s Run with them.

      • one true athena

Yeah, my son’t robotics team was in position to do well at state and hopefully go on to world’s But, nope. all canceled.

Plus they announced the AP tests are going to be 45 minute at-home exams, so … basically worthless. At least he’s only taking the calc one this year.

High school kids are definitely getting screwed.

    • 61North

      That sucks, man.

Does your son have a timeline for the ACL operation?

      • Private Chipperbot

Thanks to all. We’re holding off on surgery until fall season is done, but we can’t do PT or get custom brace ordered.

It’s weird. He moves liked there is no injury, but will just randomly fall over when running. He will be able to manage until he goes under the knife, but tough for a 6’2″ monster that is used to dominating people.

      • Private Chipperbot

And this is euro fagball that he plays, but he’s very good ??

If someone had corona virus and then got a different, but deadly disease, how would they classify the death?

    • UnCivilServant

      Where did they die?

They’d classify it in whichever way is politically advantageous.

      • straffinrun

If it were here, they’d call it “age related”.

    • Heroic Mulatto

No one dies from the coronavirus or the influenza virus. What you die from is either the massive inflammation they cause which leads to links like ARDS or from opportunistic infections like pneumonia. I’ve been hearing that coronavirus can get into your kidneys or liver and you can die from sepsis or a liver infection too.

I don’t get why I can’t do a while loop with and conditions? Could somebody explain that to me?

    • Yusef drives a Kia

I understand, but there is no Syntax to follow….

    • MikeS

We’ll do our best if you explain to us what the fuck it is you’re asking.

      • Yusef drives a Kia

Boolean Logic, and, if, then, etc.

    • Yusef drives a Kia

add an if after the loop, before the conditions?

    • Rhywun

      Does not compute.

    • commodious spittoon

      guess_sex = input(“What is the sex?”)
      guess_hair = input(“What is the hair color?”)
      guess_glasses = input(“Wears glasses?”)

      while guess_sex != “Male” and guess_hair != “Blonde” and guess_glasses != “Yes”:
      print(“Not quite! Guess again.”)
      guess_sex = input(“What is the sex?”)
      guess_hair = input(“What is the hair color?”)
      guess_glasses = input(“Wears glasses?”)

      print(“You win!”)

It seems to break down with trying to link together != conditionals.

      • leon

Should all those conditions be an or? If you need the right guess to be Male, and blond, and Yes to glasses.

      • J. Frank Parnell

        Is that python3?

I just copypasted it and ran it and it worked fine after I replaced the quotes (“ and ”) with regular straight quotes (“)

      • J. Frank Parnell

… and added in proper spacing for the while loop.

      • Rhywun

It doesn’t work for me, if I’m understanding the logic – I still “win” even if I enter “Female”. He seems to be aiming for “Male”.

      • Rhywun

I’m stumped – it should work. But I am not a Python expert so I might be missing some “quirk”.

I’m more curious why you’re looking for a blonde male with good eyesight.

      • J. Frank Parnell

Oh wait, I see the problem you’re having, it’s exiting the loop on a ‘match any’ instead of ‘match all’…

      • J. Frank Parnell

“not match any”, I mean, rather than “match none”…

Yeah, that’s the expected behavior, the while condition is going to exit as soon as any of the conditions is untrue. So if you put in “Male” “Brown” “No” for example, it’s going to fail at the “guess_sex != ‘Male'” and not even move on to evaluate the rest of the expression.

      • J. Frank Parnell

        Here, do this:

        while (guess_sex == “Male” and guess_hair == “Blonde” and guess_glasses == “Yes”) == False:

      • SUPREME OVERLORD trshmnstr

        ^^this is the correct answer.

However, as a code organization suggestion, if you have a group of related variables, you can combine them and compare that data structure to the expected results:

        guess_sex = input(“What is the sex?”)
        guess_hair = input(“What is the hair color?”)
        guess_glasses = input(“Wears glasses?”)

        guess_tuple = (guess_sex, guess_hair, guess_glasses)

While guess_tuple is not (“Male”, “Blonde”, “Yes”):
#whatever you do in the loop

      • SUPREME OVERLORD trshmnstr

sorry, you’d want to use the inequality comparator (!=) not the non-identity operator (is not).

“He has been given five citations for violation of the executive order,” Bottineau County state’s attorney Mike McIntee told me when I called him about Corum. “We’ve got people at the bar, sitting and drinking and money on the bar.”

McIntee says Corum claimed he wasn’t selling the alcohol, just giving it away while the recipients made donations.

“If you believe that I’ve got a bridge to sell you,” McIntee said.

Christ. The people are already there, the damage is done. Just let them buy the goddam goods. And the list of “non essential” is bullshit as well. Quick story from work, as told to me yesterday: So, one of our officers (the most senior officer, btw), died a couple of weeks ago. Sitting, and playing cards (or, somesuch) with his grandkids. Drops his face to his left shoulder, and died.

But–daughter is a medic of some sort, and manages to bring him back! No idea what it was that happened to him; no diagnosis has been forthcoming.

Oh, but, while in the hospital, he tests positive for COVID. So, yeah; that’s a thing that happened in my dept*.

*If I’ve ever met the man, it was over three years ago. He is posted to another campus, and there’s no contact between him and where I work.

Didnt realize my kids were on here…hold on while I use the same tools you have to find what you seek….

This has been an utterly depressing month for the world and I imagine it is only going to get worse. I do still think that ultimately it will be shown that the death rate is far lower than the current models have shown. The economic situation by then will likely be fucked. I have been working on businesses that I don’t think will last it out. I’m generally a glass half full (until I empty it) kind of guy. I hold out that there may be some positive flotsam in this sea of shite. Maybe if these models are proven vastly pessimistic there may be some pushback on the apocalyptic climate projections. Likely not, but a boy can hope.

    • Chafed

Kswell have you checked into the Paycheck Protection Program?

      • Plinker762

I’ve been looking into it. We’re filling out the paperwork tomorrow.

      • Chafed

Plinker I haven’t goiten a call back from my banker. Is it a direct application to S A or does it have to go through an approved lender?

      • Plinker762

Through an approved lender. For me it is the bank I have my business accounts with. I just stopped by and asked for the forms. There is some information on the SBA website.

      • KSuellington

Thanks C, my tax accountant just suggested the same today. At this point I can ride it out I hope. Thankfully I got a job at the soon to be Wuhan wing that is going to make this month. My real estate clients have almost stopped completely except for emergency stuff. It’s spooky driving and working in a quiet city. I really want businesses to be open again, but it’s gonna be a month. How many are going under? I feel really bad for them.

      • Chafed

I hope so too. I’ll just suggest you check on it. The loan terms are staggeringly favorable.

    • Plinker762

Nope, these models were instrumental in lowering the death rate. Therefore the climate models will guide us to the correct police actions to prevent the earth from catching on fire. (The wholesale acceptance of the ever increasing government throttling of the economy has made me a little pessimistic)

    • Chafed

      Way too close to reality.

      • Not Another Naked Digby

        Especially the Ninja Turtles mention.

But, this is my current favorite BB article.

      • hayeksplosives

That is admittedly a good one.

      • Not Another Naked Digby

        ?

    • KSuellington

      I like Don Exotic.

      • KSuellington

He’d make a good one in the biopic. I read today that Joe E himself prefers Brad Pitt or Joe Dirt to play him in the upcoming film. And it was Joe Dirt that he wanted to play him, not David Spade.

This is the most bizarre timeline.

      • Not Another Naked Digby

Huh…..a new career path for Spade, maybe? Just go around ‘being’ Joe Dirt. Kinda like a Andy Kaufman thing.

    • Rhywun

Every other article in my local paper is about this… thing. I don’t know what it is. Also I see the word “Netflix” which causes my eyes to immediately skate over to the next article.

      • Not Another Naked Digby

Well, as best as I can sum it up–it’s lurid, fascinating, disgusting (well, some of it was, to me), sad, funny…They managed to make get about 7 hours out of it. The story, is, for the most part, very true, but, there’s plenty in it that doesn’t ring very true–mostly, claims made by people talking to the makers.

I don’t know your like enough to say that you will definitely like it. But, I do think it’s worth watching.

      • Rhywun

I don’t have Netflix, which makes it easier to ignore.

      • l0b0t

For what it’s worth, I hate the Netflix interface so much, I just obtain copies of shows I like and watch via Plex. Right now, I’m enjoying the Hell out of Ozark. I hadn’t even heard of it before yesterday, but I’ve loved Laura Linney since Armistead Maupin’s: Tales Of The City, and Jason Bateman is, well, the eternal Michael Bluth.

      • Lord Digby's Golden Age of Ballooning 2--Balloon Harder

I only watched the 1st season of Ozark. I thought it was decent, but, I just never went back, for whatever passes as a reason in my head.

How have the subsequent seasons been?

      • l0b0t

Just started season 2 and I’m really hooked.

As a late-nighter; here’s hoping the others can make the Zoom chat tomorrow at 7 pm ET, 4 pm, PT, other countries–do your own math, dammit.

Watch the first part of this video with the sound muted and try to tell me that isn’t from a comedy sketch.

    • Not Another Naked Digby

Why do I suddenly want to start singing “I’m so Ronery”?

Pineapple on pizza is the way of the future, man.

      • Not Another Naked Digby

We’re all gonna die in the immediate future, eh?

      • tripacer

        I haven’t seen proof otherwise.

        ??☠

  52. l0b0t

I can’t take much more. When I watch these elected officials speak the stay-at-home/shelter-in-place orders, I’m turning into King Charles I at his trial – I just don’t recognize their ability to do this; someone will have to tell me under which authority these people think they are operating. I hate to say it, but “Am I free to gambol?”

    • Lord Digby's Golden Age of Ballooning 2--Balloon Harder

All the guns they’ll bring to bear is their “authority”. Also, all your fellow citizens that will cheer that bullshit on.

Give ’em an inch, they take the whole friggin’ mile. Give those bitchez a rope, and they all think they’re cowboys.

      • JD is Unemployed

Hell of a new handle, Diggers.

      • Lord Digby's Golden Age of Ballooning 2--Balloon Harder

Heh–thanks (I think). When I’m bored, I’m silly, and I’d been mulling it over before bed yesterday.

        /I’m often bored.

I’m running on two hours of sleep, and my workday is about to start.

My ability to think might be impaired.

Sounds about just right for government work.

      • Gender Traitor

Yesterday I couldn’t figure out why I couldn’t balance the recoveries (payments received toward charged-off loans) report for March. Then I realized I’d only run the appropriate general ledger report through 3/30.

        I’m very glad it’s Friday.

      • UnCivilServant

I’m worried I’ll zonk out and miss the happy hour.

      • Gender Traitor

I may indulge in a Mountain Dew this afternoon. After which I’ll never sleep again.

      • UnCivilServant

And doesn’t March only have 21 days?

        /ZZZzzz…

I’m gonna add it to the morning links, too. Guy coughing on his hands and rubbing the door handles, then he licks the window. I swear it ain’t me!

I’m amazed their lobby’s open. We’ve gone to drive-thru/ATM/online transactions only.

Or by appointment, which may be the only option for some, especially seniors.

That myth aboot polite Canadians? Yeah, you can stick that where the sun don’t shine. Especially further North. People are on edge.

I like mini golf but I’m too competitive. Turned off the in-laws when we played about 25 years ago. Just call me Todd Flanders.

Nobody at work is doing the Leper Length. It’s like they believe that Canada Post is a bubble of safety and I’d wager whilst out in public these same people are shying away from strangers. It’s the weirdest event that I’ve ever lived through.
