Some of us have received a reprieve this year. Are you among them?
Tonight’s queries:
Do you file your taxes as soon as you have the paperwork in hand? The very last possible minute? Sometime in between?
Do you typically owe or receive a refund?
Do you have to pay estimated taxes throughout the year?
Do you let the government have access to your bank account to get your refund faster?
Is taxation theft?
Usually try to be as close to $0 owed each year as possible. Don’t typically file til the last minute.
My first first?

Last shall be first….
Taxation is theft.
Government is a protection racket.
It took me years and years to see it. But it is inescapable. The only difference between a Mogadishu warlord, the mafia and the US government is the consent of the majority of the governed.
Still haven’t filed this year. Going to owe, like almost always do, and don’t feel like giving it up any sooner than I have to. Multiple incomes sources so trying to balance it that I don’t end up paying a penalty or worse have to make mandated quarterly payments.
Government already has access to your bank account one way or another.
Yes it is. But sometimes rape isn’t so bad.
Quarterly filing blows. So does the Alternative Minimum Tax.. … screw that and the horse it rode in on. I had a one time payment of a fairly large sum – the culmination of a decade of work. And they “alternative minimum” magicked themselves an extra helping.
I file as soon as I can.
I get a refund, as carefully calibrated as possible to be pretty small. My tax returns are . . . complex, and I don’t want an audit.
I don’t pay estimated taxes, other than the mandatory withholding frm my paycheck.
Because of my . . . unique tax situation, I have to file paper copies, so I get a paper refund check.
Taxes are paid involuntarily under threat of violence, so, yeah, they are theft.
Yes.
Wait, what was question?
1. Depends on how much else I’ve got going on and how much I’m dreading it and the bill. For several years I filed in October even though I knew we were going to get a refund.
We typically get a refund but I order my family’s spending around what is and is not deductible. Food and home repairs are a nasty inconvenience and financial black hole.
Yes, direct deposit. What difference, at this point, does it make?
Yes.
Mid Feb.
I aim for an even wash. This year I owed 9 dollars.
Nope.
Yes for deduct or deposit.
Hell yes.
File at the last possible moment or later.
Break even, or owe a little.
Taxation is extortion. “Give me money or I’ll hurt you.”
I didn’t pay taxes yet. Corona or something made me not be able to do it.
The Trump check hit my account, so I guess I got that going on.
#metoo
Yup. I want to make a pile in the floor, and roll around in all that “free cash”.
1. Eh, before the deadline, but we’re not overeager to really sit down and examine just how much the government stole from us each year.
2. Receive refund, but calculated to be as small as possible.
3. No
4. Yes, they could have gotten to it anyway and I hate going to the bank.
5. Of course.
Some of us have received a reprieve this year. Are you among them?
Yes. Both for the Feds and NH, though the reprieve length is different. I was surprised that the Fed’s announcement of their reprieve was clear and easy to understand. NH’s announcement? Nope. I had to read it a few times before I realized that yes, their reprieve applies to me.
My plan is to set things up so that I owe money. I mail everything in a few days before the deadline so that I can avoid the lines on Tax Day.
Is taxation theft?
Is this a question? Of course it is theft!
“Sometime in between?”
Yes.
“Do you typically owe or receive a refund?”
Sometimes I’ve owed, but usually a small refund.
Do you file your taxes as soon as you have the paperwork in hand? The very last possible minute? Sometime in between?
Mid March. Ive been bitten enough times by stragglers when I filed in late February that I pushed back a month to be sure.
Do you typically owe or receive a refund?
Do you have to pay estimated taxes throughout the year?
Do you let the government have access to your bank account to get your refund faster?
Is taxation theft?
Fuck, accidentally grazed the post button early.
Do you file your taxes as soon as you have the paperwork in hand? The very last possible minute? Sometime in between?
Mid March. Ive been bitten enough times by stragglers when I filed in late February that I pushed back a month to be sure.
Do you typically owe or receive a refund?
I try to receive a small refund, but I’ve owed the last few years.
Do you have to pay estimated taxes throughout the year?
Nope.
Do you let the government have access to your bank account to get your refund faster?
Yup. *shrugs*
Is taxation theft?
No, it’s extortion.
I always pay at the last possible moment. So this year will be July and I will owe money, like every year for the last several decades. A “return” is just the government balancing out an interest free loan you “gave” them. I’ll let them have what they are extorting when my time is up.
As said above, the USG already has all our bank data. If you don’t believe me, try depositing and then later withdrawing $9999 weekly for several months.
The income tax is Constitutional, but at the same time if is an immoral theft.
Withholdings should be eliminated and tax day (to pay the bill in full) moved to the day prior to election day.
“A month after giving birth, this mother returned to a hospital with abdominal pain. She gave birth to twins from a second uterus.”
https://twitter.com/CNN/status/1111266451665633280
Damn.
Does that make her bisexual?
So, triplets?
Not sure what the definition of triplets is…
3 children sharing accommodations while baking.
Even if they are in separate ovens?
Same oven, separate roasting pans.
Same roasting pan would be identical twins?
Same roasting pan, identical triplets?
Nah, the uteruses. There was 1 woman with 2 wombs involved.
This is confusing
I was told there would be no math.
::turns off The Cooking Channel, leaves living room::
“Do you let the government have access to your bank account to get your refund faster?
”
Pretty sure they have access regardless…
A. Whenever my accountant tells me to, but she seems to procrastinate and file extensions a lot
B. Owe
C. Yes
D. No
E. It’s extortion so I guess that depends on one’s definition of theft.
I usually get a small refund, but this year I owed about $600. I went ahead and paid it couple of days ago just to be done with it, and I heard it might speed up getting my Trump bucks. Perhaps unrelated but I did get the Trump bucks today.
In between. Usually in late February
I got my first refund in six or seven years. Not much, but better than owing
No. If I work a side job it’s for cash
No
By my definition, yes. But I’ve been so beaten down with them my entire adult life I barely have the heart to care anymore
On a personal note, this quasi quarantine is starting to mess with my head. I’ve been trying my best to drown out the noise, even spending less time here. And I’ve been doing that by indulging in mindless entertainment, booze, and weed more than usual. That has been making me rather dumb as well. I looked at some of my comments here over the last few weeks and even I don’t know what the fuck I was talking about a third of the time. Now over the last few days I don’t even have the enthusiasm to stay distracted, just do what work I can then shut down mentally as fast as possible. Haven’t even turned on the television. Just get loaded, pass out and try not to engage.
I hate this police state, cower in fear bullshit.
I’m crawling out of my fucking skin. I just might go off the grid by the end of the month if this doesn’t ease up.
Hang in there, TH. I’m right there on the ledge with you. Every day this lasts, my impotent rage grows stronger.
Sorry Trigger Hippie. Hang in there.
Sorry. It’s starting to mess with my head too. I feel depressed and anxious. Oddly, I’ve been indulging in mindless entertainment and booze less than usual.
“I looked at some of my comments here over the last few weeks and even I don’t know what the fuck I was talking about a third of the time.”
Well, that’s still way better than my average.
Sorry, TH. Can I bring you some books to read? I mean, for real, paper books. Lots of them.
I file well before the deadline, but pay on the deadline. I aim to owe the max that avoids paying quarterly, so over the year, I pay whatever the total was last year. I plan for paying, so it’s not unexpected.
‘Is taxation theft?’
The consensus so far this thread is that taxation is extortion, theft, or both.
Government should be funded by money voluntarily donated to it. Not by taxes. Not by the kind(s) of borrowing to be repaid by taxes.
Donation not taxation.
Username checks out.
In between. February.
I get a tiny refund. Sometimes if put fed refund into state taxes.
I never owe, I don’t pay quarterly, I do give my bank info.
I file by TurboTax. I have never been audited.
Do you file your taxes as soon as you have the paperwork in hand? The very last possible minute? Sometime in between?
I file as soon as I can, I pay as late as I can.
Do you typically owe or receive a refund?
Owe the feds, get some back from the state.
Do you have to pay estimated taxes throughout the year?
no
Do you let the government have access to your bank account to get your refund faster?
yes
Is taxation theft?
yes
I routinely owe the feds between 1 and 2 thousand. Not enough to trigger a penalty or quarterly payments. But as much as I can keep out of their hands until the last minute.
Usually the last possible minute, but this year I got all the tax forms to my accountant by mid-February. Then I got distracted and everything went to hell so I still haven’t filed.
Owe.
No.
Fuck no.
Yes.
I always owe.
I am a big fat tax cow.
I have no idea what to do this year.
Taxation is an ass-rape.
“I have no idea what to do this year.”
Get an accountant!
Lol.
I have accountants and lawyers and my ass still chafes.
An.Cap.
There’s a fellow Glib who identifies. Or, maybe he’ll want to have words…I dunno.
Tundra is cool. We’re fine.
So….you identify, then. ?
“Is taxation theft?”
Yes.
The rest of the question are irrelevant.
Where’s my bad orange man check? I didn’t make 150k this year, give it to me!
I try to get it out of the way ASAP so I don’t have to think about it.
Ideally I try to get a balance of zero; no fucking interest-free loan to Uncle Sam.
No.
No.
I don’t recall ever signing a social contract…
Ass Wednesday kind of rhymes with Tax Wednesday.

#2 needs to eat something. Maybe she should join #1 or #7?
#17 and #34 are the same woman.
I say #43 wins.
I tweaked my knee today and currently have an ice pack on it. So much for my squats. Today would have been 32. I hope I can get back to it in a couple days.
Sorry. I hope your knee heals up soon.
Do it, Tulip.
You have been killing it. Don’t even think about stopping!
(Easy for me to say. But still, do it.)
Not until my knee feels better. I have no desire to make it worse.
Agh. I’m right there, too.
I’ve been pounding ibuprofen to keep going.
You are far superior, though!
You might want to go easy in the NSAIDS.
I only use them during the shit-storm.
When things get better the strongest thing I take is a cup of coffee,
I can’t take NSAIDs so I’m limited to ice, heat, and time. It was raining this am and I slipped on grass. Ouch.
That’s good sense.
Sorry to hear about the knee. This getting older stuff isn’t for the faint of heart. Stuff I used to walk off and heal up in a day now takes weeks to get better. DO you know what triggered the problem with your knee?
This is exactly the issue I have had with pull-ups since I turned 50 or so – except in the elbows. So far this Russian pull-up technique is working to make consistent gains without injury. A real game changer for me.
I always owe.
I pay at the last minute possible
Not quarterly for income taxes at least, but that may change
I owe, so no point in ACH
It’s a voluntary tax code right, how could it be theft? /sarc
When they first implemented an income tax, wasn’t it like 1% or something? And no one ever dreamed it would be 20% for most people? And now, the lefties are dreaming of 50-60% tax rates and a 20% VAT on top of that like the EU countries have?
Yeah, it’s theft.
1913 Income Tax form 1040
Historical income tax rates.
That’s depressing.
Greatly depressing
After reading about how the 16th amendment was ratified(I never knew!), I’m going to tell any pro-gun person who says they hope some lefty just tries to repeal the 2nd to STFU!
“Do you file your taxes as soon as you have the paperwork in hand? ”
I did this once. little did I know sooner would wait till the end of March to send an 1099misc for something my wife did.
Thinking of Mojeaux, I am really wishing I had a small chest freezer. I have been looking online. Today I stocked up on meats. I pulled all the booze except gin out of the freezer to make more room. I’m also planting more vegetables this year, so even if I can’t completely stock with meat, it might be worth getting a small freezer.
The one thing I did differently this year, is that I had to do a 709 because I gave someone a gift of equity. I hope I didn’t fuck that thing up. Now where’s my bad orange man check?
I had to pay in last year because the state of Murland declared me filthy rich for making too much money. Hardy harr fucking harr. This time, I’m no longer filthy rich so I’m getting a little back, not sure if I will ever get it since the government is busy draining the treasury. Now where’s my bad orange man check?
We have a new Tulpa awaiting approval over in the dedthread!
New Tulpa is in Gateway Service Unavailable purgatory at the moment.
We like to haze them before they can even post.
I file as soon as I can, but any payments get submitted as late as possible.
I generally try to arrange to owe ~$75 at the end of the year.
I do allow direct deposit, fuck the company I work for has some government contracts, so if they really wanted that info, I’m sure they could get it.
Taxation is partial murder (theft of life).
1. We file ASAP
2. Refund, but we’ve narrowed it down to a small one
3. No
4. Yes
5. Yes. If I come into your house take $1000 by force, in exchange I give you several items, many of which you’ll never use. Would you consider that theft?
I’m a chronic worrier.
This year, because of the calendar nudging me every day I wanted to get some things cleaned up before the inevitable bites me. I decided to pay the college loans of my 3 grand daughters, 2 had graduated last spring and didn’t owe a great sum (they had worked a lot, thrifty and had watched their older sister pile on the debt).
Anyway, I took care to the two new graduates in total and the big spender about 25%. The problem was I had to sell some stuff, made a paper profit and jumped my taxes totally out of what I usually pay.
Because of that tax liability I had to sell some more stuff to pay the 2019 taxes. I did get everything cleaned up before mid Feb, cried a lot. I generally get a small refund. Do Turbotax, electronically file.
Like everyone, I pay a lot of taxes, bitch and complain but I’m also a tax leech so in my case it tends to sort of even out. Nonetheless I’d rather have had my own money to invest as opposed to the circular way I get it now.
I haven’t got any Trump dollars yet, maybe I won’t because of circumstances.
Our forefathers thought “Taxation with Representation” was AOK. They didn’t have a good handle on human nature. Milton Friedman can be thanked for the withholding part of the extortion.
I’m a chronic worrier.
Yes, same.
The rest of your post reminds me why I dig you so much.
That’s my only remaining goal. Take care of the kids and grandkids.
Thanks for the reminder.
I worry way too much also.
Ya’ll know that ain’t good for you?
I’m starting to believe that’s why my dad is 91 now and still going. My mom always said the guy never worries about anything no matter what. She passed away a couple of years ago and left the old man alone. Now he’s at a senior community and my sister says he has a harem there. I seriously believe it.
Good on your Dad, Hype. Is there more room over there where your Dad’s at? Not just yet though.. Asking for a friend
Nice. Let me know if he needs a wing-man.
I had to pay the IRS $2 this year (on top of all the money they took from my paycheck). I’d say that was pretty good planning.
I usually have mine done by mid-March. This year’s an exception because I’m convinced that one of the 1098-T forms I got form the oldest son’s college is wrong, and it confuses my 529 situation. The college can’t admit I’m right (…) without admitting they calculated it wrong for thousands of other students too. Anyway, I usually end up just about “even” between a moderate Fed payment and a moderate State refund, mostly ’cause I can’t be bothered to adjust withholding at the moment.
I’m probably an outlier here, but the only place I consider taxation to be inherently “right” is at a nation’s border. By definition, the border is where it asserts sovereignty – it’s its defining characteristic. So charging a tax for goods to cross a border is essentially an entry fee that the state has the authority to levy. Plenty of things to criticize about it – my point here is rightful authority. Confiscatory taxation of the kind we’re accustomed to is theft.
Curiously, I’m also pretty OK with the original per capita tax designed into the Constitution. I believe it was designed to comport with general equity of Exodus 30:15. This was the census-based head tax that all paid alike – “the rich shall not give more, and the poor shall not give less” to reflect equality man-to-man before God.
You have an avatar of a satanic dog and you quote Exodus? WATCH THIS GUY PEOPLE.
Okay, I’ll amend my answer to ‘the income tax (especially as currently written) is theft’.
I did mine today out of reflex because it was the 15th. Super easy now that I am a W-2 worker drone.
I used to have to write big checks to the fuckers but now I get a small refund.
I used to make estimated payments but now no.
Fuck no I do not give them my bank account number and I do know that is futile but I see it as at least make them work a bit to find it. Fuck them. And I know they know it so why didn’t I get a direct deposit today like the guys I work with?
You’re goddamn right it is.
Told our accountant today to go ahead and pay the $6k we owe the feds now. It will probably go through on Monday. The cash is in our account now so may as well pay it.
I used to own my own shop. Back then, the only money I ever owed was to my accountant. Now, I have a big person job and I set it up to owe slightly. Of course my wife handles the tax filing now so I end up paying most of hers too;
I mail paper checks to the thieves, no bank info.
It don’t really matter if you pay now or later, they’re gonna steal it anyways and it’ll be the same amount.
Yes, they are stealing. If they carefully spent EXACTLY as much as needed for constitutionally mandated government business and refunded the difference, maybe I’d call it OK for them to forcibly take it. Waste one red cent, and you stole it. Waste 90% like they do now, you fucking A stole all of it. Only reason I pay is to avoid the pain they will inflict on me if I don’t.
Every time I see a 1040 out of my pocket it goes!
OH YA! Under rated blues man.
This year was the first in a decade or so that FedGov didn’t claw back my refund to apply to a defaulted Student Loan. FedGov, in its beneficence, allowed me get my $6 refund. I try to file the moment I have the paperwork and usually get far more back than I paid because of EIC so I’m more than happy to let FedGov pay itself back with its own money. I imagine getting a $1200 advance loan on a return for which I will NEVER get that much back will bite me in ass next year, but i REALLY need the TrumpBux so I can move as soon as the World reopens.
It seems to me the covid rebate/refund is coming a bit early to stimulate the economy if businesses are still shut down.
Sssshhhh.
Having grown up in pretty rural areas, I experienced shopping for groceries as a once, maybe twice, a month thing. Up here in NYC, so very many people seem to shop every single day and don’t really plan beyond the next meal. Grocers are going to be a major beneficiary of the TrumpBux scheme. Also, I went to the liquor store today to spend some of mine (picked up a bottle of Applejack) and it was quite busy with everyone queued up talking about using their TrumpBux for their booze purchases.
I usually file around Feb. 1st, refunds are around $100 give or take. I try to keep it as close to zero as possible.
Marrying a self-employed person has made it more interesting (meaning a giant pain in the ass – sorry honey). I haven’t filed yet and it’s bugging me.
Taxation in its current form is absolutely theft.
i’ve had an accountant for more than 20 years.
Worth every dime, especially for those of us with special circumstances.
A special Easter message.
h/t JD
Another try
Lol.
Trumpbucks hit the bank account today, may be time to finally hire one.
That is approved by the Bee of Babylon
Sometimes in between.
Receive.
No.
Federal, yes. State doesn’t have the automatic deposit option.
Taxation, as currently written, is absolutely theft.
Do you file your taxes as soon as you have the paperwork in hand? The very last possible minute? Sometime in between?
I try to pay file close to deadline (similar timing each year), but use an accountant and respect her timing needs.
Do you typically owe or receive a refund?
Depends on the year and how clients pay – I try to invoice/schedule payments to the extent possible (but so do clients) to balance.
Do you have to pay estimated taxes throughout the year?
Yes – ugh.
Do you let the government have access to your bank account to get your refund faster?
Nope. In the event of a refund, I apply to next year to diminish quarterly estimates.
Is taxation theft?
100% theft.
Just popped by TOS when it pooped (sic) in my search results. Read about ten comments, puked in my mouth a bit, then came here to share my experience. Short story long, TOS is still fucked.
I never bothered to unsubscribe from TOS and still get e-mail from them. Rarely do I see anything interesting enough, knowing how they are going to frame every issue, every discussion before I even click on to the site. And every post like yours (thank you for taking the hit for the team) just confirms my decision to stay away.
– Somewhere in between.
– Recently, owe.
– No.
– Until a three years ago, they paid me twice a month anyways, so they already had it.
– You’re goddamn right it is.
Note about the site issues.
We’ve been investigating for the last couple days. Most of the issue seems to be that you are all very talkative and keep hitting the refresh button like rats trapped in a cage expecting their drug reward.
In the first 15 hours of site time today, we had received over 200,000 hits, a large percentage of them to a particular server resource. That’s pretty high resource use. I have a list of the IP addresses that seem to be the most prolific, and some of them are indeed actual commenters. However, some of them are unknown. So. Possible DDoS? Maybe. I’m going to try blocking some of those and see what happens. Lurkers: if you suddenly can’t access the site, you’ll know what happened.
The rest of you, stop hitting the damn refresh button so much. Go read a book, or play a video game…or something. 😉
So, when you say something…
“The rest of you, stop hitting the damn refresh button so much.”
Geez, what a party pooper!
Sorry.
keep hitting the refresh button like rats trapped in a cage expecting their drug reward
Dopamine is a hell of a drug.
Let me know if you want me to push an Eyepiece update that reduces the refresh rate.
reduces the refresh rate
I bought a 144hz monitor to up my game, son! Get on my level!
(specifically, if you see refreshes on a 45 second interval, that’s Eyepiece)
I’m old fashion (Brandy old fashion) I still use monocle.
That feature bugs me TBH 🙂
I always turn it off and it keeps turning itself back on every once in a while.
I just fixed the turning back on thing in the latest version. Switched the default to off so that when the cookie gets deleted.
Kewl. Updated – thanks
What are my options with an iPad?
If you install the tampermonkey add on to safari/chrome/Firefox, you can then install Eyepiece (which is designed to work better with tablets/phones). Some prefer Monocle (https://gitlab.com/glibertarians/forumProject/-/raw/master/monocle.user.js), but it doesn’t have some of the newer features.
Nada. Not only doesn’t the quick codes work on the iPad, Trashy’s code doesn’t, either.
I didn’t realize how bleak it was for iPad… A somewhat promising option is this: https://apps.apple.com/us/app/safari-snippets/id1126048257
don’t* the quick codes work
I didn’t realize how bleak it was for iPad
Me either – I recently got an iPad Mini as an “upgrade” for my ancient Nexus 7 tablet – yikes, I had forgotten how much Apple locks things down. I may get another Android tablet.
How the Eff did you keep your Nexus 7 table going all this time? Mine got so bogged down in software “upgrades” years ago that I stopped bothering with it altogether.
That thing is/was a warhorse – it was a replacement for the one I dropped in 2015. It’s still perfectly functional, but I’m pretty good about not installing random apps on it. Battery life is the issue at this point. Firefox worked well enough for Glibs, memory limitations aside (huge comment threads bogged it down).
I’m going to factory reset it and create a new gmail account so my wife can use it to cast the Fitbit premium workouts to the Chromecast we’ve got.
Number of Refreshes = amount of clog,
no clog, less refreshes
DDOS?!?!?!?
TOS will get its revenge for The Glibbening!
Hmmmmm?
hit post, count 5 and hit F5, seems to work,
By being a designated driver?
First time I’ve ever been told I refresh too often.
I recently starting using a VPN and now share a server with who knows how many of the unclean. Care to name what server IP you are getting hit by?
“But I got’s ta know!”
Damn…
We earned a DDOS attack?
/hits Ctrl-F5
The Bee has a crawler mining the site!
But….it’s how I get my dopamine.
We’ve been investigating for the last couple days. Most of the issue seems to be that you are all very talkative and keep hitting the refresh button like rats trapped in a cage expecting their drug reward.
Well if you stopped giving me crack, maybe i’d learn to stop…
So. Possible DDoS?
So who is the cuprit? CCP? DNC? Deep State? That Tulpa we told to fuck off?
I keep hitting refresh because I’m tired of masterbating but still need to do something with my hand.
Yep, as soon as possible
Yikes, but the GOV can fuck me anyway, they already know my Bank account number..
I’m still for the flat tax idea. Or a consumer tax of 15%. No income or property taxes. States can get the 5% of the 15% from the feds.
Everyone gets some skin in the game, so no one is for paying more. And by default, the wealthy pay more because they buy more stuff.
Yep. I’m even down for disallowing avoided taxes through the supply chain like VAT, as long as that is the only tax, and a time I make active choice.
It would cripple the government’s love of citizens being dependent on them forever. What are they going to do if I start living off the grid and I owe no property tax, raise my own food?
Bureaucrats will be put out of business overnight.
It’s not even that. I just don’t think a passive act, such as owning or selling (income is selling labor) should have a fee, only the act of an action, like buying, where one can actively choose to engage should be owed a fee (a tax is a fee, to pay for the service of government). Probably makes no sense as I state it, but fuck you!
Yeah, and it’s as close as we’ll ever get to voluntary system. Say I want to buy a new vehicle. It’s 50K. I know I’m going to pay a $7500 tax on that.
But you see, that’s my decision. How bad do I want it? I can either pay that tax, or not.
That’s the way this should work.
The Hyperbole impostor gets it!
This is why FairTax was interesting to me. The ability to opt out by buying used was intriguing.
I guess I’ll lurk for a while, F5 gets old….
And I’ll have to hit f5, to post this, bummer…..
I do my taxes as the documents become available. I file as late as possible, in this case July 14th.
I owe every year, and want to use that money to make more money until the last moment possible.
Haven’t had a meatspace conversation with a Black, Jew, Mexican or Jordanian in almost half a year. I gotta say it feels great. Is there something wrong with me for feeling that way?
You’ll never drive another lap for Chip Ganassi.
You know that taxation is wrong. Pay for government by: donation not taxation
“donation not taxation”
We would never have a revenue shortage because every prog I’ve ever known would volunteer to pay way more than they’re typically required to pay. They’ve been saying so for years.
They instinctively know that they wouldn’t pay shit unless they were forced and they’re only saying that as a virtue signaling exercise or they’d be mailing donations to the fedgov every year, like they already can. Head tax, flat tax, national sales tax, just whatever scheme it has, don’t let it have exceptions, and don’t let it be regressive. Everyone should have skin in the game, then they can all hate the government for wasting their money right along with me.
“Everyone should have skin in the game”
Right-on, CitrusBlaster.
Hey, are you the garlic lover? I made the garlic tart again, but used 2T balsamic vinegar instead of 1tsp. Much better.
I am, and good to know, thanks! Too bad I went through all the pounds my boss gave me and now I’m having a bitch of a time even finding a few decent heads at the grocery store. Either I’ll succeed in growing my own, or we’ll escape the lockdown and get some more fresh from the bossman when I can travel again. I pray it’s the latter before it’s the former.
Seriously, Are We Not Doing Phrasing Anymore?!
I’ve learned from long experience that there’s nothing I can say that can’t possibly be misinterpreted given the right audience, so I’ll just roll over and take it.
PeeWee Herman:
I meant to do that!
Are you hitting on me
Mrs. Robinsonexplosive citrus?Well, I did leave myself wide open for that last comment. Shit I did it again. Phrasing is just inescapable.
My sarc-o-meter is having some issues, maybe if you tap it there on the tip…
I *just* finished work tonight. Actual slack convo with my boss:
boss: oops, I started the deploy to production
me: that’s what he said
Also mentioned at work today:
“If someone can think of a bad word LG hasn’t thought of they deserve shares in the company.” I can’t help it.
I can’t help it.
LOL!
Let me know when you are ready to make a jump.
Cocks…
Dicks
Best part of Dicks. Or maybe you enjoy this part.
Yeah. I mean how long ago was it when they screamed bloody murder over their SALT deductions? What? I thought you guys want to pay more? Why you crying now?
I’m not saying they’re lying hypocrites. I’m just reporting facts. You decide.
Taxation is the price we pay to have thugs chase us down the beach on a sunny spring afternoon.
Or to have power mad governors close down our businesses or not let us keep a job. I mean for our own good.
Can you imagine if people could opt out of being pulled off buses by their legs for not wearing a mask?
No. And that is a world I wouldn’t want to exist in.
a/ We file as soon as everything comes together, but depending on the year’s exploits, that could be sooner or later.
b/ We proudly owe almost every time.
c/ We generally don’t make estimated payments. Most years the proceeds are fairly level.
d/ I put the due amount on a credit card; I love the protections a credit card affords.
e/ Taxation is theft, but I expect that probably 10% of my income would be volunteered and another 10-15% would go to services in Libertopia.
Usually mid March. I listen to this right after I file every year.
I aim for a refund as close to zero as possible, but I hate everything about this process and haven’t put in the calculation work to control this very precisely.
No
Yes
Extortion
Lol!
Best Beatle and perfect soundtrack for the winnowing.
Obviously you are too young, but were your folks fans?
Yeah, that’s a tradition I picked up from my dad.
Nice. If he’s still with us, buy him one for me!
My kids laugh every year when I play it, but like you they understand.
No idea, yet, about the validity of this. But I wouldn’t even be surprised. Especially since we already know that the CPP ordered virus samples to be destroyed. Why would they do that?
Our Wet Market… Virus Lab Safest Place on Planet!
My brother just sent me the Fox News report. I wouldn’t be surprised. The CCP has really taken pains to be as opaque as possible about the whole thing. But then again, that is their nature, and they could have done so if it really was from bat soup.
Well all. My plan tomorrow involves both logging into work early and logging in late. With everything shut down, tomorrow morning I’m walking up to my local strudel shop to pick up two half strips and some butter horns (I have a friend stopping over to drop off girl scout cookies for the girlfriend on Saturday). Unfortunately, they open at the same time my work shift is supposed to start. I figure if I get caught up on e-mails first, they can’t bitch too much.
I took off for an expedition to the Walmart. We really need to do it. We’ve put it off as long as possible. Better go now before Fatty Hogan declares food non-essential so that he can get it all and pork up those jowels some more.
As I mentioned above, I stocked up on meat, but I’d like to do more. I plan to brave Lowe’s Friday am and check out small chest freezers while I’m at it. I need to get seeds, garden soil (my yard is terrible) and frames for garden beds. I’m worried about the food supply, so I’d like to expand my garden, buy more meat, and do what I can to get ready.
If the meat supply chain breaks down I’m in a decent place. My mom and her man have been raising a few cows they were planning on getting butchered this year anyway. I can easily guilt some meat out of them if need be.
There’s enough deer, turkeys, and others walking right out in the yard that I’m not especially worried about meat personally, but more about everything else that would come with meat shortages. And my wife is a picky eater so would probably be a little longer to eat Bambi than I’d go for.
Average death rate up in 2020 over 2019 at this point? I’m talking all deaths. That would be nice to know, wouldn’t it.
Do you realize that everyone you know someday will die
We try and estimate our taxes so that we are as close as possible, but it’s tough with your own biz. We are a Corp so I I take a paycheck and do the deductions monthly, but they still want more. They always want more. This year we just finished doing them a couple weeks back and sent them to the accountant. We will end up getting 5k back because of the difference in yearly income. Taxation is extortion.
May I posit another question? How much do you estimate you pay as a percentage of income in all taxes combined? I gotta say it has to be close to 50% for us.
How much do you estimate you pay as a percentage of income in all taxes combined?
I’m afraid to make those calculations.
With the income, property and sales taxes, I suspect I’m in the Euro world.
Federal taxes, SS, Medicare, and state taxes combined, are my largest expense.
Don’t forget to add booze, sales and gas taxes in there.
At least 60% of my expenditures this year will be taxes. Explicitly taxes. I’m not counting the cost of back end regulations that are passed on to the consumer.
The back end adds on God only knows, I don’t even want to think about that.
Arizona, maybe?
Arizona, Nevada, and Idaho are all on the list of eventual possible spots.
In addition to your choices, we love SE Utah but will probably wind up on the Clark Fork River in western Montana.
Mama wants to be near the kids.
Both will be in Co for the next few years. I’m digging WY.
Right on. I love the Clark Fork, I’ve fished it a number of times.
@tundra: I really like WY but you have to go west to avoid the Great Plains. Casper is very nice.
@KS: Mom and Dad moved up there in 2000. Dad died a few years ago and Mom has Parkinsons. We told her that when she needs assistance we will move up there. We like where we live but MT is nice, too.
Thanks, Hobbit.
I fear that I’ll end up in CO, anyway.
I dig the plains, but I’m a freak. Mrs. Tundra doesn’t always share my proclivities!
Just a thing to note for people planing on Retiring in Utah… Utah does tax your Social Security payments as income.
What’s the rest of the tax burden?
Awfully nice place…
It is very nice, i love it. But I’m not remotely retired so there’s that too. Income tax is average ~5% Flat tax, with few deductions/exceptions. Sales Taxes are kinda ridiculous depending on where you live. I thing the base is 6.5% and the more metro areas are usually .5-1.5% more. Property taxes are fairly low, i guess. i think i pay .57% of the value of the home. In all It’s middling.
Thanks, leon.
It’s on the list.
I’m thinking I’ll end up in Idaho. Either the Silver Valley or Bonners Ferry.
Never did that calculation but spitballing, fed + state + property tax gets near 50, then on top of that sales tax, SocSec… I don’t want to work
just a tick of 50% here in TN, a state with no income tax
I do count both sides of FICA as taxes on me and then increase my “earnings” by 7.5%; simpler math: just take off 14.5% of your FICA income.
Being both a ‘Wage Slave’ and ‘Self Employed’, I’ve struggled to keep from having to pay in making less than $13,000 combining the two revenue streams, while people making more money than me get their ‘taxes back’. Poor people don’t really get how tax withholding works, they think the government is giving them money, and that’s how they think it should be.
If everyone had to write an actual check to the government we would have a tax revolution within a year.
And employer sponsored escrow the following year to bring us right back to where we are now.
Send statements to accountant when we get them, he files when he files.
Small refund fed, owe state
No
How would I know, Mrs. Patzer keeps the family books (keeps me out of trouble).
Is the Pope
PolishCatholicCommie?@Tulip, we just scored a very sweet deal on a freezer. Facebook, Next Door, Craigslist, and Letgo are your friends. XY was the one who actually got people to respond back to him though. For whatever reason, lately people post things for sale but either don’t answer you or they sold it but never took down the listing and sometimes have no intention of it.
Anyway, tomorrow I’mma fill that fucker up.
So….um…your gay son is good at getting responses on Craig’s List? Might want to keep an eye on him…just sayin’…
In checking that too.
Also looking into getting a side of beef. We used to do that before the house ate up every spare dime. It was awesome.
Good prices on beef, but not such great processing fees. Still, a side of quality corn-fed beef is hard to beat even if you aren’t “saving” any money.
If they aren’t dry aging, I humbly recommend that you just buy a shit-ton of ground beef. I’ve done it and the ground beef is the best i’ve ever had, but the steaks are just OK.
Unless, of course, the SHTF. Then just buy meat!
Mr. Mojeaux likes having steak. so for him, the price levels out.
This is how I used to get it cut (from my notes):
They thought I was crazy, and then then two other people decided they wanted it cut “like that lady wants hers” and then they did it and they didn’t think I was crazy anymore. Also cut down on locker fees.
I have been estimating my tax with spreadsheets since the mid-90’s. Right now I can tell you that my estimated bill for 2021 will be $500.
However, I set myself up for a serious rape in 2018 when I retired. I vastly mis-estimated taxes and wound up having to pay something like $4k in excess taxes and interest.
Of course taxes are theft. Jesse James used a gun and was at least honest about his occupation.
It’s bizarre to be talking about taxes as the government is showing that it can just print money while forcing people to lose their jobs and hunker inside.
Who do you pay?
Both. It truly sucks.
Pardon my retardation, but what does it work out to?
I’m confused why you would pay the US a fucking dime.
He’s a CIA plant!!!1!
I’ve got spies!
Global Tax Jurisdiction FTW. I don’t remember what Admin it was under, i think Boosh, but it was then that the US government said, fuck you you’re not citizens, you’re subjects and you are our property.
I have to pay an accountant to file. Usually I don’t owe any to the US, but the filing itself costs me a lot to have it prepared. Only the US and Eritrea (?) have extra territorial taxation IIRC.
There’s no need to collect taxes whatsoever. Since they’ve tacitly decided to penalize the good guys (savers), abject dilution is as legitimate and efficient an answer as any.
Before, they kept the facade up that saving is a good thing. You’re right. That shit is gone and MMT is the new default policy.
I weirdly miss paying taxes on royalties on mineral rights. Oil and gas is a straightforward business with obvious assets and earnings; it’s good old nineteenth century capitalism that shows up clearly on one part of one form. The locals y los Federales get their cuts and then you put what’s left in the bank.
Just had to ask, what is the Kenosha gag?
oh, ask any time; I need to know if something’s not working at all
* that’s where 2016 was decided
* that’s where 2020 will be decided
but everyone wants to talk about everything else, like how Warren or Abrams are terrible VP options (as if those were remote possibilities) or how Trump is ramping up his base (as if that somehow adds electoral votes in Alabama)
I do think it’s kinda funny that the Democrats solidified around Biden after he won states that he has no hope of winning in the general (SC, et. al)
I take your point, but it’s constructive: that’s when he had the points and the best angle to the goal line. I don’t care what Democrats do, but when else would we expect consolidation if not then?
Oh i get your point too. He did some good maneuvering and was in the right spot to win. I just think that it was kinda funny.
It would be funny to see what would happen if the parties just ran elections in swing states. I wonder how strong the “hold your nose and pull that lever” sentiment would be in the snubbed “Safe states”, vs them abandoning the party that snubbed them.
safe states
One wonders what CA, NY, and NJ are getting for their trouble. It’s not clear to me what Chicago, Hope, and Plains did for them. Not that any president can save them from themselves.
I don’t mind that Trump, a moron, is president. I mind that our federal government is so large and Congress has so completely abandoned its responsibilities that who is president matters.
I don’t care what Democrats or Republicans do: their smoke-filled backrooms were perfectly acceptable to me, none of my business, really.
One wonders what CA, NY, and NJ are getting for their trouble.
I don’t know if they do get much. I too wouldn’t care much if congress would bitch slap the president around. Smoke filled rooms seems fine to me, as the primary system is entirely a farce. But we live fully in the anti-masonic period, and people have been trained to believe that “picking” who gets to run for each party is part of their God Given Right as an American.
It’s why when i talk about the DNC “stealing” the election from Bernie, i usually do it to get Bernie bros upset and to stir pots. The DNC can choose to select their candidate from a hat for all i cared, and same with the RNC.
You do know, Kenosha is Milwaukee. The the result was from the rest of the state turning pink instead of blue.
was supposed to be this and this, respectively.
You’re certainly the expert on WI.
Kenosha is shorthand, as is my beating the WHO votes WHERE drum.
I’m just saying there are key locations and demographics for which the turnout will be key. Louisiana ain’t one of them, so Trump getting a standing ovation at a football game counts for doodly squat.
There are swing states; those states have swing districts; that’s how things work, how they will work, what worked before. It’s personal preference to focus on what matters, but that’s the kind of guy I think I am; others are welcome to post about whatever they wish, but I don’t see the point of (what are to me) mere tangents.
I could change Kenosha to Bucks County and be just as content with the quality of my observation.
We always have to wait, because there’s always some dumb paper that doesn’t come til late. But I don’t like waiting too long either because I pushed it to the last minute once and then found out our property tax assessment wasn’t in the folder. So it was a hurried scramble to try to find it, etc etc. But we’ve had an accountant do it for two years as we tie up my mother-in-law’s estate since it got a lot more complicated than I’m comfortable dealing with on my own.
This year the accountant was so apologetic for getting to us late, but said he had to do all his corporate clients first because to apply for the CARES relief stuff, they had to have filed. And that was definitely a case where we reassured him that no, definitely not a problem ,we can wait, please do them first! I hope nobody was hassling him about it, but people suck, so probably someone was.
Yes, taxation is theft. or, no, I think it’s extortion. It’s “pay up or the dog gets it”. Still bullshit no matter what name you call it.
Nothing made me hate the government more than when I had to deal with my grandfather’s estate.
Yes.
I’m still dealing with the remnants of my grandparent’s estate.
Including a piece of property in Contra Costa County.
Your state is fucking crazy. And I say that as a Minnesotan.
Having to do a dead person’s taxes is an…. experience
The accountants dig it.
Yeah, I’ve been helping my mom deal with my dad’s passing this year so now it’s on my side. Such a tremendous amount of crap.
lol, I am curious if we’ll get my MIL’s TrumpBux, though, since Massie has a whole thread on the money going to people who died in 2018,
Do you file your taxes as soon as you have the paperwork in hand? The very last possible minute? Sometime in between?
I get antsy around March 1st and usually file not so long after that.
Do you typically owe or receive a refund?
Typically owe, as of the last few years. This year is, I think, a “OMFG” payment. I’m finally breaking down and getting an accountant for a second opinion. A (tiny) Kung Flu silver lining is I may avoid some underpayment penalties I otherwise would have owed (if I’m reading the IRS site correctly).
Do you have to pay estimated taxes throughout the year?
I clearly should have these past couple of years (background: I’ve gotten serious about my personal finances [better late than never] and sold many years worth of company stock in order to diversify my risk – don’t need the company folding to cost me both my paycheck as well as a big chunk of net worth)
Do you let the government have access to your bank account to get your refund faster?
When I got one, I did – that ship has, as noted, sailed.
Is taxation theft?
Yes, taken by a secret band of robbers and murderers.
https://www.foxnews.com/politics/california-newsom-coronavirus-stimulus-checks-illegal-immigrants
SMH. Maybe Trump can halt payments to CA next since they seem to have plenty of money already.
What if I claim, illegally, that I live in California?!
Well, that’d be illegal. Can’t have that.
That’d be infuriating if I were a CA taxpayer.
Incidentally, my first thought was “that headline has to be hyperbole, let me check around”. Nope, that’s reasonably accurate: $75M of taxpayer dollars, with the rest from charities. As I said, infuriating.
I can only hope that whatever* has beset Gavin f’in’ Rossdale in the last few years, will do

No wonder certain parties want illegals to not be excluded from the census. Also, illegal alien in Google News only turns up The Blaze, Fox News, and even more fringe spots. Not one MSM. The J school consensus has purged that erm almost entirely.
I had to search for “undocumented” to find other sources. The fact I had to translate to Newspeak was not lost on me. *drinks*
Hey–no person is illegal!!1!
Let’s all remember that the next time the MSM pisck up a story about whatever malfeasance du jour the see on one the right.
Like people being outside of the house arrest?
Want.

In case we think that team red is much better on the constitutional issue, Senator Kennedy comes on after him and doesn’t even come close answering the question, either. Team Red is a bit more worried about the economy, but the constitutionality of the measures is mostly off their radars.

Still up drinking beer, it’s the birthday of a friend that died. He died along with another friend, who has a different birthday. We are all goners in the end, we can try to live the best while we have it. While you have it.
I’m sorry for your loss.
Cheers s e.
I believe my dad’s B-day was…first week of the month? His passing date is…soon, I think. I suppose I’m bad for not keeping up with it, but it was 45 years ago, and we didn’t dwell on it much as I got older.
Also, Cheers.
Cheers
I’ve seen some go three of four hours.
Right now is the time that happens. After the last of the late nite and those in weird time zones chime out.
I’m lurking while at work. We got huge truck tonight, 59 pallets, and another truck expected in a few hours. Grocery store will be fully stocked tomorrow.
You are the stocking machine, lol. That was very nice to see you in full form on the front lines. Huge props.
Thanks. It’s mindless drudgery but at this point, I’m quite happy to be working.
Huzzah!
My weekly shopping day is Friday. Hoping the Safeway is also close to being restocked this time.
Holy crap…. Does that include the Lost Shipment of Last Friday?
Godspeed, l0.

Oh! You were talking pauses between posts here? Yeah, those can go for hours too.

Some people just need to put in OVERTIME!
Since I live at the expense of the taxpayers, I feel I owe them a financial statement.
I make about 3k a month after taxes. I live in the barracks, so no rent. I have AC, bed, fridge, microwave, shower, sink, toilet, and no room mate. No complaints.
Fun fact: the word barracks comes from the Latin word for hut, barca. History does not record whether centurions ordered dinner from the Barcum Pizzium, but I like to think they did.

Nice. For us, we got the brand new Hollywood barracks, 4 to a room with bathrooms in the room. We weren’t allowed microwaves, coffeemakers, televisions, refrigerators, etc. and there was no AC (just steam heat in the winter) but it was a HUGE improvement from the WWII era open bays.

Salutes back and pokes you.
I did my whole first 4 year enlistment in huge, open bay barracks which were usually 20 to 40 grunts to a room. Shared showers with no curtains, toilets without doors. About the same level of privacy as you would expect in jail.
Decades later, when I came into the Army Reserves, at the end of my first day the Admin Sergeant handed me a key with the room and building numbers on the tag. I went over to that building, found the room, as I opened the door I was expecting things must have improved – maybe there would only be 4 or 5 roommates. As I surveyed the room I almost teared up – it was my own private room with a shower and kitchenette. It was a new feeling for me – that Uncle Sam really seemed to care about my well being. Had this been the norm back in the day I could easily have stayed in – or come back in after getting my degree.
Being an NCO has some perks.

OK, the Planet Service looks pretty good. I’ll have to watch the rest after my boys go to bed tonight.

Congressional Aide Clancy admits to taking down and cutting up document to distribute to desperate congresspersons. “I thought they kept it behind glass to be used in an emergency, like a fire ax” stated Clancy. “I asked the Senator and she told me ‘Go ahead. it’s not like we’re using it anyway’.” he said.

I assume this poll does not apply to me and the thread is anyway dead already, but…
Tonight’s queries:
Do you file your taxes as soon as you have the paperwork in hand? The very last possible minute? Sometime in between?
– I don’t all my taxes are withheld by my employer
Do you typically owe or receive a refund?
– not a thing in Romania, only for businesses and VAT this can be the case
Do you have to pay estimated taxes throughout the year?
– withheld every month…
Do you let the government have access to your bank account to get your refund faster?
– what does access mean? I assume the government can find out my bank account number quite easily.
Is taxation theft?
– not really, more like extortion. Except single land tax…
Access, as in, the ability to add/subtract money to the account. Of course, it’s the “subtract” part that is most worrisome, event though most of the transactions are of the “add money to the account” variety, in the form of refunds.
And, it’s extortion, until they actually show up with weapons. Then, it’s a robbery.
Access, as in, the ability to add/subtract money to the account. – anyone can add money to your account i would assume as long as they have the number. As far as subtract, I don’t think government here needs special permission to do that. They cannot do it directly, but you accounts can be blocked at any time, and then after some legal process the subtraction happens.
But the legal process can often take no more than a couple of days so they can de facto subtract, unless you are officially categorized as at risk of sever poverty or something.
Since I don’t work in a bank, I’m not sure, but, I think people would need identifying info to go along with the account #, in terms of a deposit. As far as blocking the accounts to get money, I would guess the prevailing wisdom around here, is, make the government work for it as much as possible.
There are plenty of stories of businesses, etc, that have made ‘erroneous’ deposits, and then subsequently been able to simply pull the money back out (or, try to), leaving people in a bind, and, a bit shaken. The idea that a debit to your account, that you didn’t authorize (even if it was based on a mistake) is rather jarring, when you think you’ve only given permission for the money to go in. Who else might be able to simply say, “Ooops! I need this money out of their account”?
For the record, the wife has us set up for direct deposit for any/all tax refunds. Since there’s no state income tax in Texas, it would only be the IRS.
Well here you need the full name of the person and account number to transfer, both things the government knows.
If there is a bank error that puts money in your account, fixing it is not considered subtraction. If I or someone or a business accidentally transfer money to someone else, I have no idea what the process of getting it back is.
The idea that a debit to your account, that you didn’t authorize – how does the authorization process work there? Here whenever I transferred money to someone, or someone to me, name and account number. And the money appeared in my account, I was no asked in advance if I authorize
I presume that, since we are talking electronic transfers, the website keeps track of clicks, for lack of a better term, considering that you have to put in a billing address, along with the name and card info (for purchases). In-store purchases used to rely on signatures at the POS, and some still do. Or, use of a pin. That does seem to be lessening in frequency, as far as where I shop. Still, they may rely on video if a charge is contested.
But, that’s all crediting, and not a debit/deposit that you didn’t authorize. Plus, please don’t think I’m contending with you on this, or that I disagree–I hope I didn’t come across that way. I’m just trying to be as precise as I can when it comes to why a lot of us are very leery of providing bank info to the government voluntarily. Low trust people, and all of that.
Well when I say transfer I don’t mean card. I mean for example I go into my online banking application where I can transfer money directly from my account to some others. For this I need no billing information. Name and account number is enough.
Here for card purchase you need a pin, or no pin for contactless under 100 Lei. Here there was never a signature because cards don’t go back before 2000 or so, so we always had pin/chip cards.
providing bank info to the government voluntarily. – see here this is not exactly a choice. You cannot have a bank account the government does not know it is yours. I have never provided the government my banc account. The bank does it automatically. There is a centralized database with all bank accounts. It is how for example banks check your credit rating.
I would imagine that FDIC fills in that role of “letting the government know” about bank accounts, here in the US. That said, I’m not sure exactly what gets reported, and to whom. But, when it comes to getting tax refunds, you either provide the account # (and, whatever else the IRS asks for) for direct deposits, or, you will get a paper check.
I don’t have any experience with direct funds transfers, myself–beyond setting up direct deposit with employers. The spousal unit does, but, I have no idea what she had to do to set it up. I don’t count things like PayPal to be the same, by the way. Anyway, it may be the same here, as far as just name and account #.
Good morning Pie.

If I wore a “Bring out your dead” t-shirt to the grocery store, do you think they would ask me to leave?
only if you don’t have a bell
I have a bell.
“If I wore a “Bring out your dead” t-shirt to the grocery store, do you think they would ask me to leave?”
If anyone there did, would you shop there again in the near future?
I have a cloth face mask given to me that has zombies on one side and am considering wearing it when next I go shopping. If you like, I will describe my experience/the reactions.
I have one of these: https://www.amazon.com/Attack-Titan-Multi-Functional-Scarf-Mask/dp/B078GFVLXM
I’ve never “worn” it, but have thought of doing for shopping. Then again, when I’m out shopping, I want to do so without being accosted (for any reason), so I usually talk myself out of doing so.
Digby,
That is very different than the one which I was given, in that the one you posted a link to may not be considered humorous. I think that you are wise not to wear it when shopping (or any other time, including looking into a mirror).
Yikes.
It may come in handy for cosplay purposes. Then again, I haven’t actually done any cosplay.
It seems to all works out, though. ?
I dunno. Do you think Jerry Garcia is grateful now?
Our IRS is called ANAF aka Agenția Națională de Administrare Fiscală
Many here are saying it’s “extortion”. To me, “extortion” is subset of “theft”. “Extortion” is a more specific description. Still, “theft” is a legit description, too.
Yeah that’s my thinking.

Hello straff,
I remember posting a link to at least one reference to this on H&R, and here is the same link or one that should suffice. It may seem outdated in some regards in an “Orwellian” sense, yet there it is.
Basically: “Simply apply the rule: If the government does X, it is called Y.
X = extortion; Y = taxation
X = robbery; Y = taxation”
I think this comports with your conclusions as expressed here.
Take care, straff (and others),
Charles
Oh, that “legitimate” use of force, and it’s monopoly by the government.
When the US chose to eschew royalty, it seems odd that “we” would simply turn around, and make our own government “above reproach”, too.
“When the US chose to eschew royalty, it seems odd that “we” would simply turn around, and make our own government “above reproach”, too.”
President Washington seemed to have it right in this particular. He had many faults, and was an authoritarian in many ways it seems to me, yet he did not continue his “reign”.

Alas, Digby, even though I think that I understand your point here and am inclined to discuss such matters further, I must away to sleep. Take care, and may you be guided by the Non-Aggression Axiom.

To me, theft highlights an involuntariness* that doesn’t exist with run of the mill taxation. Wage garnishment is theft. Taxation is voluntary, but coercive, which, IMO, is outside of the strict definition of theft. I’d say that the umbrella term is misappropriation. Fraud, extortion, theft all fall under the misappropriation umbrella.
*involuntariness in the legal context… as in you don’t conciously take the action that causes the transfer of the money.
Fair enuff from a legal perspective. End result is the same whichever way you label it; taxation is immoral. Would it really make a difference in the grand scheme whether it was labeled “theft” or “extortion”?

So… serious question. Someone posted an article saying governors do not have the power to issue orders to citizens, even under an emergency declaration, but the article was very vague about which states this applies to. I was looking up the executive orders in NY and they reference a certain law, which by my reading does not give the governor the powers he claims in his exective orders. Example:
https://www.nysenate.gov/legislation/laws/EXC/29-A
[bold mine, other bold removed]
It seems important that he claims the ability to modify law, however Section 29-a of Article 2-B of the Executive Law says nothing about modifying law, only suspending laws. This makes sense, as the ability to modify law (even subject to the restrictions of the state and US constitutions) is a terrible power.
https://www.nysenate.gov/legislation/laws/EXC/29-A
[bold mine]
Now re-reading it, this gives the governor the power to make ‘directives’ and enforce them. I sitll don’t see where he has the power to ‘modify’ laws, but he can basically make them from whole cloth, if I’m reading this correctly. This really makes me question the article someone posted previously. Is NY really this shitty? I mean, my own analysis on freedom shows that it is, but come on.
Here is the article, Drake posted: https://thewashingtonstandard.com/do-governors-have-authority-to-shut-down-state-economies-commerce/
Be careful of taking legal advice from The Washington Standard. 😉
After a quick read and not nearly enough coffee yet, I agree with you that at best, the Section allows for the governor to suspend provisions of law that impede necessary response to a disaster, but the laws in question remain unchanged. Once the emergency has passed – and there’s the rub in our current circumstances. At what point HAS the emergency passed? – the original laws once again are in force.
As we’ve seen, many politicians have a very low threshold of “necessary.”
Until they say it is over. IOW we’re screwed.

Also, the Psych marathon has resumed on USA. ?
Missed those first time around. May have to check them out – Thursday tends to be our “Must Suck TV” night. I’ll take it from your enthusiasm that Psych is worth a watch.
While our cable was out after the tornado last year, we fired up our dusty digital antenna and caught some episodes of Babylon 5 on one of the over-the-air digital channels. I wouldn’t mind watching some more of that if it’s available somewhere. (Netflix, I hope? The only streaming service we have?)
Yeah, I’m a fan of Psych. It’s fun and the cast really works well together. Lots of great cameos too.
Seconded. Psych is a lot of fun. Even Corbin Bernsen, who I usually can’t stand, is great in it.
Here is Babylon 5 (link expires in 1 week).
Oooh! Thank you, l0! ::claps hands, giggles::
He’s suddenly a Hero, just like me! j/k
And here is Psych
I could re-watch Dead Like Me if I was arsed enough to sit still that long. This pandemic has put ants in my pants.
Have some Dead Like Me
Nifty! That was a show that we all (Wife and three teen-aged daughters) could always agree on. Bookmarked.
Thanks, Man! You’re a mensch.

Lol
Tres did it! Before he smashed his TV.
To settle the debate/question: extortion is theft.
“If you don’t give me a thousand dollars I will shoot you”
Vs pointing a gun at aomeone and saying “hand me your wallet that has a thousand dollars in it”……
A distinction withput a difference.
Taking my stuff against my will is theft. Robbery. Extortion. Call it what you will. You still have my stuff.
Amazon says I can’t get my subscribe and save delivery for Lysol wipes this month (which I’ve had on for years).
First responders deserve them more, apparently.
We have a canister of Lysol wipes and another of drug store brand hand wipes on our kitchen windowsill. I haven’t touched them.
I make a point of never allowing my house to get too clean. My theory (which is mine) is that this practice has made my immune system strong like ox.
Yup. I’m not washing my hands and I make Bat-Man goggles at everyone as a greeting. It’s the New Normal.
Our issue here is that there’s so much dust in the air and so much wind that things get dirty very quickly. We washed the car on Saturday, and it look like we drove through a dust storm already. The inside has the same issue, but less egregious. It took me an entire roll of paper towels and nearly a full bottle of windex to clean all the windows last week.
I live outside the City proper but as soon as I hit the “bowl” it’s non-stop sneezing and sniffles from the accumulated winter grit. Nosebleeds, even. Clears up as soon as I get home which is 500 feet above the rivers.
Supervisors at both of my sites are hoarding that stuff under lock and key. Apparently even fat and happy postal droids are prone to thievery.
If Rumpke cant send out a driver that can put the can back w/o just leaving it on its side in the street, then they’re likely to get a very strongly worded letter.
I’m convinced one of our esteemed (ahem!) township trustees has a brother-in-law who works for them, which is how they got the contract.
