Afternoon, or PM, or evening…..hell, I Don’t Know What We Call Them Links

“Can someone pick up the links this afternoon? I am bemeetinged for the afternoon.” – Brett L

I assume “bemeetinged” is Florida man for screwing meth or snorting hookers. Or he could be preparing for the imminent dustpacalypse. Anyway, no one volunteered. Then, no one else volunteered. When STEVE SMITH doesn’t try to stop you from doing something, it’s as though he sanctions your plan. (In deference to STEVE, I submit this article about huge shafts.) So I said, “I could do it.  But people hate my links.  Screw it.  I’m doing them.” And here we are. Fuck off, haters.

Archaeologists said Monday that they have discovered a major prehistoric monument under the earth near Stonehenge that could shed new light on the origins of the mystical stone circle in southwestern England.

Things like Stonehenge and the pyramids astound me. But what is crazy to me about Stonehenge, is that while we have some good detail on Egyptian civilization, we haven’t got much of a clue about the people who built Stonehenge. That and the fact that those things were ancient even by Julius Ceasers day. I mean we live closer to him than he did to their construction.

“Comic actor Ben Stiller has an idea for the perfect replacement to a statue of former president Theodore Roosevelt in New York City, which is set to be torn down soon.

The Zoolander star, 54, took to Twitter on Sunday with the suggestion that his Night At The Museum costar, the late great Robin Williams, be the inspiration for a new statue in its place in front of the city’s Museum of Natural History.”

A little bit of pushback across the pond…right around the start of the EPL game Man City vs. Burnley, a plane circled the stadium for a few minutes with a banner reading “White Lives Matter, Burnley.”

By half-time, Burnley FC already had a statement ready:

“Burnley Football Club strongly condemns the actions of those responsible for the aircraft and offensive banner that flew over The Etihad Stadium on Monday evening.

“We wish to make it clear that those responsible are not welcome at Turf Moor.

“This, in no way, represents what Burnley Football Club stands for and we will work fully with the authorities to identify those responsible and take appropriate action.

“The club has a proud record of working with all genders, religions and faiths through its award-winning Community scheme, and stands against racism of any kind.

“We are fully behind the Premier League’s Black Lives Matter initiative and, in line with all other Premier League games undertaken since Project Restart, our players and football staff willingly took the knee at kick-off at Manchester City.

“We apologise unreservedly to the Premier League, to Manchester City and to all those helping to promote Black Lives Matter.”

And probably a guido from South Philly.

        SYSTEMIC RACISM

      • leon

That is actually a fair response.

The argument being made is “Black people get killed by cops, and no one cares, but they should because black lives matter”. I never have found ‘All lives matter’ to be particularly effective at taking on that argument.

What i think, however, shows the hand of the leftists, is the amount of vitriol when someone says something like “it’s OK to be white” or “white lives matter”.

      • WTF

BLM is based on a false premise, cops do not kill black people at a higher rate than they kill white people.

      • Tulip

They kill them in a higher proportion, relative to population.

      • Jarflax

Not relative to total interactions. End the drug war, end the welfare system in all its forms and watch this discrepancy disappear. There is absolutely racism at play. The racism of the left that has destroyed families, education, and upward mobility among those trapped by Lyndon’s Great Society.

      • R C Dean

Isn’t “All lives matter” just the shorthand for the the argument that “Black people get killed by cops, and no one cares, but they should because black all lives matter”.

I don’t think there’s any question that the killings by cops that get the high-profile media treatment are of black people, with killings of other races being pretty much ignored.

I really have a hard time believing that “Black Lives Matter”, in the current state of play, isn’t a statement that black lives matter more.

      • JaimeRoberto Delecto

I don’t have a particular problem with the name, Black Lives Matter. I have problem with people freaking out when someone says “All lives matter”. The proper response to that is something like you Leon said, or something like “Of course all lives matter. It’s just that we don’t feel like our lives have mattered as much.” Instead, too many of chosen to cry “Racist!”. They also should be prepared with an answer when people point out that blacks are far more likely to be killed by other blacks than by a cop.

      • Rhywun

The way I see it, the name was chosen for deliberate provocation (and obfuscation). Hence all these shitshows with people talking past each other.

      • JaimeRoberto Delecto

I figured they chose the name because Black Lives Matter Too just wasn’t as catchy.

      • Stinky Wizzleteats

Why does he have to come out of his basement, he seems to being doing just fine if you believe the polls. The people that are voting AGAINST Trump don’t care whether Biden’s senile or not, particularly if he gives the left a desirable VP pick (who’ll be President before the midterms).

This is another Prog “canary in the coal mine,” IMO – and a dangerous one.

Maybe it’s the perspective of age – or just of having watched this shitshow for several decades now – but I’m starting to get a sense that the Progs will just keep pushing and pushing popular culture toward Progtopia in the absence of significant blowback for each more outrageous claim. Every new (and ever more extreme) demand is done simply to see how far it can be pushed. (Not news to many here, I know). The other part of my ‘model’ is that most people – the normies or moderates, of whatever political stripe – just don’t give that much of a fuck about it and so they see no need to “pushback.” They don’t see it as part of a larger context.

So here’s the civilizational question: will the Normies (or moderates?) ever push back? And – if they’ve waited for so long to do so, will the pushback be bigger/worse than that – i.e. a genuine backlash with the pendulum going the other way? Or will it just be token resistance against the inevitable “blue” wave? In other words, will we just slouch towards Gomorrah, or will there be some counter-revolution that costs the grievance-mongers their status? I’m not certain, but thinking that it’s time to “cancel Jesus” may be a bridge too far for Normies in America.

      • Ownbestenemy

Tactically, a bad move I would think. Right now the movement is hyper-focused on imagery that may stoke some sense of national pride, but to include a religious icon, it adds more people. The more they broaden their focus, the less likely they will retain support I would suspect.

However, with some church leaders already telling their congregations and flocks to repent and clean the shoes of their new masters, I don’t know.

      • leon

but to include a religious icon, it adds more people.

I guess i’ll have to amend my comment about Byzantine Iconoclasts vs Iconophiles i made earlier today.

      • Ownbestenemy

Which makes me rethink what I replied with too. A goal of an invading force is to convert, culturally and religiously, but that usually comes after submission. It seems the Antifa/BLM movement is accelerating that and trying to go for one huge knock-out punch.

      • leon

So… I think what we are seeing is that there is beginning to be two “Overton Windows”. It’s not that the left is shifiting it, as much as the left and right are shifting apart and there is less and less common ground between the two.

So when the farmer/cheesemaker dropped off my order on Sunday, he said “I’d like you to meet someone.” On the passenger seat of the F250 was a big plastic bucket partially filled with straw and a newborn goat. Apparently the delivery earlier that morning went poorly, his twin didn’t make it and mama was in no condition to nurse. So Lee was making his deliveries while stopping every 15 minutes to feed the kid.

On a related note, I feel like I’ve wasted the last few decades of my life not cooking osso buco.

If I understand correctly, the mould finds invading organisms by looking for DNA that is the same (seems like profiling and racism) but then it attacks the DNA and beats it up which sounds like anti-racism. And the mould is also British, so I’m just really confused.

Interesting study on the risks of CV based on what we currently know.

The study found a person in a typical medium to large U.S. county who has a single random contact with another person has, on average, a 1 in 3,836 chance of being infected without social distancing, hand-washing or mask-wearing.

If that sounds like a tolerable risk, consider the odds of being hospitalized. The study found a 50-to-64-year-old person who has a single random contact has, on average, a 1 in 852,000 chance of being hospitalized or a 1 in 19.1 million chance of dying based on rates as of the last week of May.

A couple of pro-lockdown people in CA are already calling the study deeply flawed or “misleading and not helpful.”

The researchers themselves admit that the study isn’t proof of anything because the data isn’t complete. They admit that the data would have to be a lot better before anything could be “proven”. I tend to be much more interested in studies by researchers who admit that the SCIENCE in their paper needs to be taken with a grain of salt.

I Know its not the common opinion here, nor may it be the libertarian position, but lines are going to have to be drawn somewhere, and those lines were not ambiguous. As a 34 year old you should know that sleeping with a minor will land you in a world of hurt. That this woman is learning that the hard way doesn’t engender much sympathy for me.

I dislike arbitrariness. But when there has to be arbitrariness, then it should be clear, and no one can argue that they don’t know that it is illegal as a 34 year old to sleep with a 16 year old.

I agree that laws on this issue are necessary and there necessarily will be arbitrariness and that in such instances the rules should be clear, and everyone should know the rules on this in their own state. But it should also be pointed out that the age of consent in the majority of US states is 16, so it’s not like this would be illegal everywhere.

    • leon

      It all seems very arbitrary.

It does, but its not arbitrary in an unknown way. You don’t get to be 34 and not know that it is illegal to sleep with minors, no matter how arbitrary that may seem.

They are often connected to big drug cartels, they are not just gangs of kids anymore. They are often the kinds of kids that are called superpredators — no conscience, no empathy. We can talk about why they ended up that way, but first, we have to bring them to heel.”

        Soros on the other hand….

      • R C Dean

I still think the police shouldn’t be killing citizens.

There are good shoots. I recall one in Tucson a couple of years ago – if memory serves, a guy had a gun to a woman’s head in a car. The cop put a round in his head from a decent distance away – 10 yards? Maybe more? The cop, it turns out, had been a Marine sniper in Iraq.

      • Tulip

Yes, there are good shoots. There are also a lot of bad ones and that’s what I’m objecting to, but if you want to give my statement the least charitable read you can, you do that. It’s always so very helpful to any discussion.

      • Jarflax

The relative numbers are relevant to the discussion. Hard to really get at with all of the bad faith in the reporting, but pretty much the core of the issue in my opinion. It is absolutely impossible to get the rate of improper police actions to 0, because even good people will make mistakes in tense situations, so the question really boils down to whether it happens ‘too often’. And frankly all of the “Cops are a problem” talk boils down to exactly the same sort of collective guilt as “[Fill in your minority of choice] are a problem.” The acts of individuals indict those individuals not their groups.

The problems I see with police as a group (and other parts of the sytem) are:

        1. Immunity from consequences (and in all fairness lynch mobs on the flip side)
        2. Laws against consensual behavior

      • blackjack

Privatize and allow competition. If a given city determines it police department is too aggressive, they should be able to fire the whole shebang and start over with a whole ‘nother setup. Why are we stuck with one option? It ain’t easy to reform a juggernaught. We shouldn’t have to even try. Fire them all and get someone who is less apt to kill people over nothing.

      • Ownbestenemy

Agreed but you can’t have that view because you aren’t framing it to their narrative.

The admission came in a January 2013 podcast obtained this weekend by Fox News. In the podcast, Kimmel also changed his speech pattern in an attempt to adopt the voice of black comedian George Wallace, in what host Adam Carolla called Kimmel’s “crazy black voice.” Kimmel acknowledged imitating black people on other occasions as well.

‘The 1964 film plays racial panic in a farcical key’

An American academic has criticised Mary Poppins for projecting racial stereotypes, saying Dame Julie Andrews’s character wears “blackface” during one scene.

Writing for The New York Times, Professor Daniel Pollack-Pelzner – a gender studies professor at Linfield College, Oregon – sharply criticises the scene where Mary Poppins joins Dick Van Dyke’s chimneysweep Bert to dance on a rooftop. The pair both get covered in soot as the dance number “Step in Time” is performed.

Pollack-Pelzner says that, while the scene may be comic, the author of the Mary Poppins books, PL Travers, often associated chimney sweeps’ blackened faces with racial caricatures.”

Either I’m fried or that’s some shitty writing, but I read that twice and can’t figure out whether the gyms are opening or not.

        They’re opening. First sentence.

      Which version?

Not sure to be honest, one of the ones without the voiceover (whichever one I bought on my Apple account).

She has both a boobpedia and wikipedia page.

Shocking moment double amputee writhes in agony on the ground ‘after being pepper-sprayed by police and having his prosthetic legs taken by cops while peacefully protesting’

I’m on Team Cop with this one.

According to witness accounts, police officers had detached the legs from the disabled protester, leaving him helpless on the ground.

Other people in the crowd reportedly confronted the officers and demanded they return the prosthetics, but the cops allegedly refused. Then several protesters allegedly rushed the officers, getting pepper-sprayed in the process, and wrestled the legs back from them.

Additional video recordings from Sunday’s protests showed officers using their department-issued bicycles as battering rams to push the crowd back in a bid to clear the street.

They used bicycles to push back the protestors! BIKES!

    • AlmightyJB

      That whole scene looked staged.

“Black hole theory ‘verified by researchers’”

You know, I always used to hate the song ‘Black Hole Sun’ by Sound Garden. Actually, I still don’t like the music, but I’m now starting to like the idea as the only way out of our current misery.

I hate almost everyone and everything now.

The latest trigger of my hate is Brett Favre saying that Kapernick is a ‘hero’. WTF? So now, not being good at your job and whining about it all the time makes you a hero? FUCK YOU, Favre!

    • Ted S.

I figure he thinks he’s taking some sort of veiled shot at Aaron Rodgers.

      • Hyperion

Not sure why, I’m sure Rogers has already out virtue signaled him by now.

Football stadiums are symbols of the ancient coliseums in Rome, where they owned slaves and made them fight in the arenas. Burn them all down.

26.81% more prone to general racism than the average person.
26.27% more prone to socio-historical racism than the average person.
6.93% more prone to perpetual foreigner racism than the average person.
19.9% more prone to racism than the average person overall.”

    https://www.idrlabs.com/racism-scales/test.php

    This test is stupid.

    • Sean

      100% more prone to rage.

    • Naptown Bill

Oh hey, I got the same socio-historical racism score as you! Overall though I’m just about as racist as the average person. And of course, all people are racist. And by people, of course, we mean white people, because they’re the only people who can be racist.

The funny thing is I took the risible “Check Your Privilege Challenge Test” and wound up lacking any privilege, because, as it turns out, 10 of the 12 bad racist lack of privilege things have happened to me at least once in my life. And I’m a straight white man, so that’s supposed to be impossible.

    • Agent Cooper

29% total racism. Am I doing this right?

      • Drake

You have room for 71% improvement.

I’m way more racist than you. I think it’s because they had all of those “it’s OK to..” questions. I think most everything is OK, even if I wouldn’t do it.

OT – I am not in any way a fan of baseball. However, The Simpsons season 3 offering, ‘Homer At The Bat’, is one of the strongest episodes in the series.

You know who I mostly hate? IT people. You will mostly never admit it’s a system problem.
We just had a new system put in and it takes a day or 2 of back and forth for you fuckers to admit it’s something you need to fix.
Just one example. The other day i sent this guy 2 templates labeled “good” and “bad” and he refused to look at them and then on a conference call said I wasn’t clear on what I wanted.
