Just because you can…

I’m really pretty damned tired of the news these days. Oh well, I’ll figure something out.

Head on desk.

This is great. Next, teach them how inferior and flawed humans are.

The best timeline.

She used to be hot.

There are eight asteroids headed out way in the next week. Sadly, none of them will hit us.

Best job in the world?

This perked me up a bit. Enjoy.

  11. Evan from Evansville

@Brooks: I’m so sorry to hear about your situation and grief. I do understand; sadly—from the other direction. I am always sorry about “doing this” for me to my family and Lady and others.

I am in Indy but I don’t have my first doctor’s visit here (another EEG–which are actually kind of fun and relaxing, but no one is going to like the results) on Tuesday.

My family, or at least my brother, has pretty much isolated me completely and doctors simply keep changing meds and dosages and my body and brain can’t keep up with all the changes.

Your post hit me hard, but from the opposite way. I feel like I’m doing to my people what is being done to you. No one likes to be on either side. It’s a hellish feeling. I wish you the best, and hope that everything works out as best as it can. Be strong, not just for them but for yourself. It’s a tight corner to be forced into. You have all of my wishes and hope.

I’m going to stop typing because I’m now crying. Be the best you can. I’m the “soldier” and my Lady is my nurse. Both people love and need each other. And now we are so far apart. We still rely on each other. That’s a mixture of sadness and happiness that people can be so kind. Thank you for what you’re doing and who you are. Even if you can’t be there, it never goes unnoticed. And appreciated. And necessary.

Sorry that I keep typing. It made me emotional. Be as well as you can. Love goes out both ways.

    • Yusef _____ too much, insert verb here

Evan, we all have things to work through, You take care of you, it’s been a rough ride so far, relax and get better,
      God Bless You

    • Don Escaped the Virus . . . remember the virus?

That’s a mixture of sadness and happiness that people can be so kind.

I won’t say that’s all there is, but life without it is not worth living.

    • Nephilium

I’m glad to hear your lady joined you on the trip back here (unless I’m really misreading things). The isolation and avoiding others I think is what’s hurting people the most. Hope to meet up with you at some point.

      • Evan from Evansville

Lady is still in Korea. She is to be deported for being hired illegally…but South Africa and South Korea aren’t great friends. They don’t let flights go between each other. So she is stuck. Illegally in exile. That’s pretty fucking rough.

So she looks out for me from 12,000 miles away.

I’d love to meet. I’m in central Indy but without a car or even a bike. I’m lucid but no one trusts me for silly (IMO) reasons. Thanks, bro, for thinking I have an illness that will spread to everyone and being so stupidly obsessed with Covid.

But I have my own place now. Watching documentaries and reading. Hoping for the best. I want to go back to my ex-pat family and friends (and Lady) as soon as I can. This country has shocked me with how it’s been altered recently. Korea makes much more sense. Having said that, I’ve spent 6+ years there.

      • Nephilium

Sorry to hear your lady’s not with you man.

What’s the time frame when you’re out of isolation? I’ve got both cars and bikes, and a large amount of vacation time to burn.

      • Evan from Evansville

I’ve done my two weeks of quarantine! So really just no job (Like I’m ready or planning on teaching in America) and all of my friends live abroad. I’ve never been an adult (well, post 22-years old) in the States.

It would be profoundly interesting and liberating to meet with some folk. Timing is weird because of meds and my family insisting that I get everything checked out over and over. It’s hard to get your brain in balance that way. They don’t seem to realize that.

        But i’d love some companionship!

      • Nephilium

How you looking for the weekend of the 4th of July?

  12. SUPREME OVERLORD trshmnstr

If they’re custom building the drone plane, I don’t think the pilot has a chance. A lot of the design considerations and limitations on performance are to keep the pilot from losing consciousness. It’s not like the AI has any business getting into a dogfight with the human.

Hell, were I designing an AI “drone”, I’d essentially upsize an air-to-air missile, swap out the rocket motor for a turbine, and cram a supercomputer inside. Probably 1/10th the cost of whatever they put together, and just as effective.

    • Yusef _____ too much, insert verb here

even with equal tech, the drone reacts faster, and according to Boyd, will out OODA the human, every time,

    • Nephilium

I don’t even think you need AI for it. Leave it RC, and you don’t need to worry about any pilot.

      • Yusef _____ too much, insert verb here

I can fly that plane (RC plane that is)

    • Don Escaped the Virus . . . remember the virus?

a lot of drone missiles are already run turbines, especially those by Turbomeca in Grand Prairie

      • C. Anacreon

I just finished reading a mystery novel where it turned out the way a victim was killed was via a top secret government drone, which housed a precision long rifle which could accurately fire .416 boat tail ammo on a target from 600 yards away while hovering in the air, using video controls a thousand miles from the site. About how much BS was this?

      • Yusef _____ too much, insert verb here

none at all, that’s pretty straightforward, I could manage it with my RC stuff and a few Arduinos,
        /No, i haven’t thought about it, really

      • Suthenboy

A few years back a fellow rigged a 9mm pistol to an RC helicopter and was flying it around shooting things. He made the mistake of posting video on Youtooobz and the feds went after him. I am not sure what they charged him with but they sure went after him.

      • Suthenboy

        None at all.

I dont know if it is still around but a fellow used to have an interactive web site with cameras where you could control his rifle via your computer and shoot at targets. As for the 600 yard range with a (I assume a 416 Remington Magnum) it is very possible.
My gunsmith used to compete using 50BMG on a rail gun. Their competitions were at 3000 yards with a 12in bullseye.

        Then there is this: https://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2013/03/bullseye-from-1000-yards-shooting-the-17000-linux-powered-rifle/

I once hit a big screen TV with a 7mm Remington Magnum at 1000 yards and it totally wasn’t luck. That is my story and I am sticking with it.

      • Count Potato

        Not .416 Barrett?

I don’t think anyone made .416 Rigby or .416 Remington Magnum boattail spitzer cartridges, because they were for dangerous game, and neither were military.

      • Suthenboy

I can’t remember who all make 416 caliber rounds. I was never interested as bullet selection is very limited. Why not go with a .458 and have an unlimited selection?
I think Lapua makes one….Ruger…uh…yeah, Barret. I am sure there are more. Maybe some of the older English cartridges.
The Remington is just the first one that came to my mind.

      • peachy rex

I guess it depends on the size of the drone. Heli-borne snipers are a standard thing, but even an AW109 has three tons of mass to sop up recoil.

      • EvilSheldon

Not complete BS, but very close. It’s one of those things that is theoretically possible, but the cumulative error would stack up so fast that it makes the concept worthless.

Hanging a gun on a drone and shooting stuff is easy. 3D station-keeping of sufficient precision to allow a 600-yard first-shot hit from an aerial platform? It can’t be done.

      • Yusef _____ too much, insert verb here

Bullshit, modern drones hang hang with precision, remember, we aren’t hanging a gun, just a Barrel/receiver mechanism,
Wanna bet? I’ll do it, can you?
        /Smartass Yusef

      • EvilSheldon

600 yards, first shot hit on a stationary 10″ target from an aerial platform? I’ve got a fifth of top-shelf booze that says you can’t do it once in five chances.

      • Don Escaped the Virus . . . remember the virus?

        +1 /westerly gusts to 10 MPH

      • Jarflax

You maybe could stabilize well enough to hit shot one. There is no way any hobbyist drone is hitting shot 2, I doubt there is a publicly available drone that would still be flying. F=MA, so A=F/M and drones don’t have the M.

      • Tres Cool

Have you seen an M1 Abrams in action?

I know its not aerial, but their ability to move and shoot is impressive. And my knowledge is based on 25 year old tech.

I have a Chefs Choice diamond wheel sharpener. It works great. I had some old knives that were totally dull, and got them razor sharp.

It isn’t as hard as glass but almost. I paired it with a diamond block made for sharpening chisels. I was afraid she would chip the edge. I snuck in the kitchen and carefully examined it just now while she wasn’t looking. *whew* No chips.

I saw an ad for bread yesterday, 1 lb loaves but priced the same as 1 1/2 pounders not long ago. Some products that used to be 16 oz are 13-14 oz. TP has gotten much narrower in width. We don’t see the product shrinkage as fast as a price increase.

My neighborhood is about to fall into all-out political war. I’m in a gated community in a mostly white/hispanic, middle-upper middle class area. The county is about 75% Dem but out here is closer to 50-50. Every day walking around I see someone with either a new Trump flag/sign or a Biden sign. One asshole put up a thin blue line flag this week and it got torn down (I’ll let whoever did that slide). There were barely any political signs in the neighborhood in 2016.

    And you know what?

Everybody was fine. Nobody was a racist ass. Nobody shouted white supremacist slogans while sporting a Hawaiian shirt. Nobody screamed “Black Lives Matter, you racist!” in my face. Nobody seemed to be the least bit interested in even mentioning any of it.

I’m sure people are upset and wound up…. but not nearly to the extent that one might believe based on press reports, riots and online mobs. The quite obviously ghetto couple that was blocking my way in the aisle looked up and noticed me and moved without being prompted. He said “sorry about that” like a normal polite person would. I said “no problem” like a normal polite person would. There was no underlying tension. Just normal people doing their normal thing.

Yup. Today, I gave a bunch of fish I caught to a couple of noob fisherman (one black, one white) because I didn’t really feel like cleaning them and they were having a tough time. Then when I was at the launch, I let a black guy go ahead of me because the way the boats were set up, it made every one’s life easier. I even joked with him later because he did a great job backing up and getting his boat on a trailer, and in my experience that never happens. Usually when you give up your spot, it turns out that the guy ends up not knowing how to back a trailer. Everyone at the launch laughed and nodded.

So yeah, the lake was a cool place to be today and I think you’d be hard pressed to find the systemic racism that seems to be all the rage right now.

Serious question for my political analyst buddies here:

Is Trump going to be able to do his 3D chess thing on this one? He’s been dealt a double whammy of Covid shutdowns and riots across the country.

I think there is an obvious opportunity here to take this and ram it up their rear ends. By making a direct appeal for the black vote, Trump could completely blow everything up. All he has to do is get the list of names that BLM keeps repeating. Run it down. Then ask… Who was the mayor for this one? Who was the chief of police? Run them all down, and ask… what do they have in common? They are all democrats.

Just hammer it home. Ram it up their rear ends.

The media will howl. They’ll call him racist. But he can just be Trump and keep sticking it to them.

It might be the only way out of this insanity. The media has been so … soviet. We have no national discourse any more. They’ve even gone full tilt with the “now is not the time for you to share your opinion” thing.

Maybe this is Trump’s calling. This could be why he is here. No other politician could pull that off… I don’t mean nobody else could make the case. Almost anyone could make the case better. But nobody could sustain it and pull it off. Except maybe Trump. He managed to survive the “grab them by the ” audio.

    • Jarflax

My take is that the election will be decided in about 5 States and therefore will not be decided by national events, but rather local. Michigan, Pennsylvania, Florida, Wisconsin and North Carolina, and three of those will be decided by Union votes. How does all of this play with the blue collar vote? I don’t know.

      • cyto

I don’t know about Florida. We have had a lot more people move here from NY.

      • Jarflax

That “I don’t know” is why you guys are one of the deciding States.

    • blackjack

He’s already the only one decrying the rioting and looters. The people who do that almost always win after a huge national riot, maybe more so this time with all the defund bullshit being bounced around. Imagine the hilarity when these defund idiots get themselves into a victim situation?

      • cyto

I would agree with that – except we may not be living in a world where normal physics works. Because in my world, people who call for defunding the police department in Los Angeles because of something that the Minneapolis police did are rightly viewed as being insane and are roundly ignored by all. And probably shunned and maybe taken for a stay in a mental hospital by their close family.

But I’m living in a universe where those people are having the leaders of their cities kneel before them, begging for forgiveness and telling them that they promise to listen hard, and listen deep.

      • blackjack

So, when it’s time to reelect them, and there’s a looted and burned street right in the middle of town, you think they’ll vote for the grovelers? I don’t. Especially once the PD starts it’s “show them what a mistake they made by defunding us” program.

      • cyto

They did the last 3 times this happened in my lifetime. I wasn’t around for ’68, Well, I was

      • cyto

but I was barely out of diapers.

      • blackjack

I’m pretty sure that every major riot I’ve seen has resulted in law and order types winning office afterwards. ’68 was Nixon ’92 was Riordan ( the last republican mayor of LA. Chaos makes people vote for protection. The cops are going to make sure there’s high profile cases where they just “couldn’t get there in time” and punch that point at the press conferences until funding is restored. Incentives matter.

      • cyto

        I remember Rodney King.

        Hands up, don’t shoot.

Neither resulted in a law and order US President. And more to the point, neither resulted in Democrats losing control of the city governments where the riots happened.

Hell, they ransacked Atlanta when I was living and there… and we’d had a black mayor since I was a little kid.

      • blackjack

I guess, but LA elected a republican mayor after the riots, and there were riots in ’65’67’68 and Nixon won in a landslide. Even the democrats were massively law and order after those riots. Biden wrote the crime bill, Hillary gave her “superpredator” speech. Tough on crime was the only way to go in the ’70s and the ’90’s. Unfortunately, lot’s of anti-2nd measures included.

    • Pope Jimbo

The problem is that cops are one of Trump’s blind spots (like the WOD). He loves cops too much to take advantage of this moment. If he was really smart, he’d seize the advantage here and propose elimination of qualified immunity and pubsec unions. He’d say that it was to deal with police unions, but expand it to be all govt employees.

He love the cops too much though and won’t do it.

The upside is that if you believe polling Trump’s numbers with black likely voters are high enough to be giving DNC folks the terrors.

      • cyto

I wonder what that actually means….

I mean, it is entirely plausible that historically low unemployment has broken through with people.

And there certainly is an opportunity. The freaking crime bill that so many decry as racist was sponsored and pushed by Joe Biden. Trump is the guy who has been unwinding it…. without the love and support of the democrats in congress.

I doubt very many people know these facts. But it could be an opening.

If Trump pulls in a major chunk of the black vote, he’s in without trouble. But if he does so with coattails… breaking the stranglehold of the democrat party over the minds of black voters… Well, the house could be in for an avalanche. I doubt it, but if he were to run that gambit hard and pull it off, the entire political map gets blown up.

The DNC implodes. The RNC likely turns inside out. It would be a huge opening for a 3rd party to form and either join the other two or fully replace one or the other.

      • Stinky Wizzleteats

Defunding the police is a good idea if people have the ability to arm themselves and to defend themselves as they see fit. Otherwise it’ll be a disaster. Believe it or not, there really are people out there who’d happily slit your throat for a twenty dollar bill.

      • blackjack

Defunding the police would be great, AFTER we defang them and we no longer use them to collect fines and hassle everybody over nothing. Starting with the defunding is/will be a disaster. They will just “not make it in time” every time they are called for serious shit and blame it on lack of money. They are not going to take this shit lying down. Laws making them accountable and putting them in prison when they do this shit needs to be first.

      • Chipwooder
