You know why. Because hardly anyone is writing anything lately.

Aren’t you all bored at home under house arrest/curfew/quarantine? Seems you’d have plenty of time to write! (For a site that rewards you in absolutely no tangible way for doing so.)

OK. Talk amongst yourselves, then. I need a glass bottle of wine.

I've got an idea! How about we just stick to the Constitution as written and then the government can leave me the fuck alone.

hardly anyone is writing anything lately

I’ve been trying. I lost a few paragraphs to power failure.

    • UnCivilServant

Speaking of, does rust impede cutting iron with a torch?

      • Scruffy Nerfherder

If it’s thick it can act as an thermal insulator of sorts because you have layers of rust with air gaps inbetween. But typically, you scale the metal first to remove the excess. It’s risky to hit it with a torch otherwise because if there’s water in there in between the layers it can pop or even cause a minor explosion.

      • Scruffy Nerfherder

Same reason you never take a torch to concrete. The vaporizing water in the material causes it blow out.

I should mention that with very rusty metal you can bring it up to temperature more slowly to dry it out before attempting to cut.

      • UnCivilServant

Ah, so he really needs to clean it off, since this metal was just exposed by low tide, do it definately has water in there.

      • Scruffy Nerfherder

An experienced cutter would probably run the torch sideways across the surface to blow off some moisture and scale. I would prefer to mechanically scale the excess oxidation first. Once you’re down to solid material, the moisture is not an issue.

      • UnCivilServant

        Thanks, man.

I always end up writing characters who know more than me for some reason…

      • Plinker762

Rust impedes cutting with a torch because it is oxidized iron. It won’t burn when the jet of oxygen is directed against it. So you have to melt the rust before you can burn the steel below it.

I had a dead thread comment.

It’s nice enough to be outside though so I might put down the phone for a while.

    • UnCivilServant

      I saw it.

My Hawai’ian shirt is solid blue-gray with yellow letters stitched above the pocket reading “Hawai’i”.

    • Hyperion

Dead thread reply at the bottom of this thread…

      • hayeksplosives

It’s gonna be hilarious if this hits the press.

      • dbleagle

I own that exact red Hawaiian shirt shown in the link- but not the tacti-cool gear. I guess I need to wear that shirt to work soon. (It has to get to the top of my rotation of Hawaiian shirts that I wear each day in the office.)

      • SP

I have a difficult time picturing you going to an office every day.

      • pan fried wylie

He’s showing up in Hawaiian shirts, “office” could mean anything from “commercial alligator farm” to “carnival ride”.

      • dbleagle

Heck Tulip has seen me in a Hawaiian shirt in a Virginia restaurant and seen me in an office building. BOOM, mind blown.

Now a Hawaiian office is a special office and not like a square’s office.

  4. Florida Man

I wrote a short horror story to entertain myself during quarantine. I can submit that and everyone can mock my terrible writing. I also tried to teach myself to draw and paint, if you want to see some terrible art.

IRT: You know why. Because hardly anyone is writing anything lately.

    • SP

      Yes, please.

      • Florida Man

I’ll sub soon as I get home.

Kinky! Especially as a reply to SP.

Funny, I heard a similar thing on an all-hands a few weeks ago about everyone having all this extra time not having to commute and so forth. That’s probably true for other people. I was one of the small minority of people who not only have a baby at home who can’t go to daycare yet but also am sharing WFH time with my wife, which means I’m squeezing in about half a day of productive work during the waking hours when I’m not taking care of my children, cooking, cleaning, or self-medicating with Cheap Whiskey. I actually have a lot of writing planned, among other things, but I’ve got to get these damn kids shipped off to daycare or school as the case may be and likely have time in the office, God help me, before I can find the free time to do it.

    • Digby recommends Crelm toothpaste

Did you get moved in yet, trashy? If so, how’d it go, etc, etc?

      • slumbrew

Not to be insensitive, but, it’s just a trash can – how much “moving in” can be required?

      • Digby recommends Crelm toothpaste

        Awwww….that’s…..oooooohh!

    • Don Escaped Australians

I made a shrimp etouffee tonight, only I misjudged how much liquid would cook out of the onions and peppers and I left the lid on too long so it came out more like a stew. Still good, but not really an etoufee. Is there a term for that? If you make a dark roux, add onions, green onions, green peppers, and shrimp, and then cook it down with a cup of chicken broth, what’s that called?

    • Sean

      ?️‍?

      • Ayn Random Variation

I just saw your post. I stayed outside for an hour after curfew to see what would happen. Nothing happened. It seems fairly peaceful in Philly today. The big news is the city removed a statue of Frank Rizzo from city hall, and some people with bats and axes were out protecting the cops in Fishtown, to the chagrin of the new police commissioner, who’s main concerns appear to be vigilantes and applauding cops who kneel with protesters.

Between the rona and the riots, I’ve discovered that I know have a mayor and Governor almost as bad as NYC residents.

It’s Philly, what did you expect?

And cops almost always hate “vigilantes”, they’re the competition.

And yet, Chicago gangs can support the cops. Crazy Town. (No music videos – we’ve all suffered enough).

      • Naptown Bill

Yeah, the shrimp was on sale and I figured I’d do something other than grilled beast or Red Baron pizzas, which seems to be the menu most nights these days.

SP, you have to assign people to write articles, if they don’t meet your standards (which can be completely arbitrary) you can make that person shamed by all the political refugees that inhabit these pages. There would be some exceptions, of course.

TPTB are to be commended for keeping us sane, within limits, during these trying times. I am grateful and I get up early to read the overnight/early morning comments. There are some dependables that make the mornings brighter.

Hmmmm. So I can assign an article to you right away, Fourscore?

      • Fourscore

You can but I thought I’d be the exception. Make a deal, I’ll have one done tomorrow, quality notwithstanding.

I also tried my hand at a cooking video for submission but was hammered. I had the Go Pro mounted on the bike helmet and commenced to cooking. So hammered I don’t remember what I was cooking and haven’t looked at the video yet. I am sure it is Oscar worthy but it felt odd cooking while wearing my bike helmet.

    • Spudalicious

It most definitely needs to be posted here. As an article.

Since this has been a shitty day for our band of misanthropes, and lovely people, here is one more nut punch. Today is the day (US time) that the Tiananmen Square massacre occurred in 1989. At least 10,000 dead.

More than 10% of the country marched in anti-Shah demonstrations on 10 and 11 December 1978, possibly a higher percentage than any previous revolution. It is rare for a revolution to involve as much as 1 percent of a country’s population; the French, Russian, and Romanian revolutions may have passed the 1 percent mark.[22]

Someone close to me was today accused of being racist when they asked a client to actually pay their fucking bill for services already rendered per the signed contract. This person close to me has not one racist cell in their body.

I hate where society is presently.

I had some work done about a month ago, sent the check (5K) to the guy’s home address. Last week I got the check back, not at this address. I called him and he gave me is current home address. Today I called his office, talked to the office lady, she hadn’t seen the check yet. I teased her that if she wanted to get paid she’d have to get on the boss’s butt. She said he’s very busy (roofer) and not the concerned and will eventually bring her the check.

      • Naptown Bill

To be fair, I worked at Tony Roma’s in Bowie, Maryland twenty years ago as a waiter, and inevitably every other Friday and the first day of the month you could expect to be called racist because you wouldn’t comp the ribs or the salmon. And maybe we were, because damned if the people involved didn’t eat every last bite to be totally sure it wasn’t up to par.

      • cyto

My only race-specific memory from being a waiter at an all-you-can-eat restaurant back in the early 80’s was the table of seriously overweight women who would eat plate after plate of seafood. They always ordered the black sea bass… which was much less common than the fried shrimp or flounder.

They’d eat pounds of food… each.

The first time I had them at my table, they got really mad at me because we didn’t have sweet and low for the iced tea. I guarantee that each of them plowed in over 4,000 calories… but they were worried about the sweet tea.

Bonus… at the end of the meal the were unhappy that we didn’t offer deserts.

There were five of them…. they ate for 2 hours and I made at least a dozen trips for more food for them. And they left about three bucks in change.

Not my favorite group. They were regulars for the time that I was there… and they always ordered the black sea bass and complained about sweet and low, and always tipped poorly. I think they thought they were big tippers though.

We had other hefty groups… but that was the only one that had a “type”.

      • Festus

When I worked at Grandma’s greasy spoon there was one customer that came in for the weekly Sunday turkey buffet. She’d order and then retreat to the Ladies for about ten minutes, eat her fill (which was about three days worth of food to me at the time) and then revisit the washroom. Never once left a tip unless you counted the tiger shark hiding in the toilet bowl. Just awful.

    • hayeksplosives

The chi-coms have successfully controlled information to the point that young adults don’t even know about it. There was a kerfuffle at this time a few years ago where a couple of families ran a joint ad of remembrance, no particulars—just names, dates, and “Remember.”

It passed the censor because she was a young gal in the ads department and that date and reference didn’t mean anything to her.

Bizarre. The protesters have been well and truly memory holed.

    • Tres Cool

Once when me & OG-2X-OG went out of town to the Keys, I parked my truck @ Tres Sr’s, cause hes close to the airport. Of course I left the keys, and he called and said “I need some mulch and I see this 3/4 truck here, do you mind if I use it?” How am I gonna say NO to my Dad, when my truck was parked in his drive and he gave us a lift for our flight.

I get home, and he was complaining- “Tres, that truck of yours is too big. You dont need anything like that. I nearly broke my leg on the clutch! Some plastic piece of shit fell from the dashboard. Sell that shit.”

Old fucker couldnt handle the clutch. His feeble leg came off the pedal, his knee hit my electric trailer brake controller, which caused an ABS short that cost me $1500 to fix, once I realized what happened.

      Bastard turned 81 yesterday.

      • LemonGrenade

Maybe I don’t have enough sense of familial duty, or maybe I’m just too jealous of my own toys, but I wouldn’t let my own father drive my truck. I know my dad hasn’t driven anything that large before, and sorry, that toy cost way too damn much for me to let people who don’t know what they’re doing try to drive it. I would have offered to take him to the store to pick up the mulch in it, though.

I mean Sanders is kind of the Rand Paul of the Democrats. If Sanders got to actually write laws, you could judge him for them.

I think it’s been a looooooooooooooooooooooooong time since any senator wrote an actual bill. If it isn’t written by lobbyists it is written by staffers. Someone like Rand I expect reads the bills his staffers write for him, but I’d put that kind of commitment in the .01% range.

As far as I can tell, he was pounding the QI drum last year. I mean, I will say for Sanders, hes been gun friendly throughout.

I expect citizens to arm themselves, to shoot violent criminals dead, that’s their civic duty. Shoot the violent criminals in the act of committing violence, so we don’t have to rely on incompetent government workers acting in our names, putting the wrong guys in prison, abusing them in custody, killing people when they don’t need to die.

      • LemonGrenade

And yet, all of my coworkers think I’m insane for thinking like that. They can’t understand why I could both totally support an end to police brutality, and also want every property owner to arm up and shoot anyone trying to loot their property. I’m pretty sure if we had a naming contest, I could name far more murder victims by the police than they could, because it’s something I actually fucking care about rather than just jumping on it because it’s the headline of the day.

    https://www.americanthinker.com/articles/2020/06/democrats_are_using_antifa_to_foment_revolution.html

This is the revolution the Democrats couldn’t win legitimately at the ballot box, or steal in the 2016 Presidential Election, or force upon America through the coup they have been prosecuting these last 3½ years.

    ….

Almost alone, but with burgeoning support, Trump sees what is happening. His “law and order” speech on Monday night was perfect. Law and order always sells because people want to protect their families and property, and live in a world where they don’t have to fear rioters or government.

Trump walking across grass where people rioted the evening before to St. John’s Episcopal Church, a target of Antifa arsonists, was a signal to Americans that we will prevail because he is with us.

Earlier in the day on a conference call, he told the nation’s governors they were “weak,” and that they must “take back the streets.”

We are watching outright rebellion and revolution and we must not let them win. Trump promised he would stop this, with the National Guard and with the rest of our armed forces, if need be.

With the Democrats and media supporting Antifa, Trump really is our last hope.

    Makes me so optimistic.

    • Hyperion

Of course this is true. The problem is, how many people will even be able to see that to consider it? How many people only see CNN or some other left wing democrat controlled media, as their only source of news? It is 90% or more? Anyone know?

        You magnificent bastard.

      • cyto

I watched that presser live on CNN. That’s precisely what they said immediately afterwards.

They had Anderson Cooper on and he reported that Trump ordered the military to clear the square immediately during his press conference (from what I’ve seen, it was an independent decision by the DC park police due to bottle throwing).

He reported that the walk to hold a bible up was a bizarre photo op that defied explanation – no mention at all that the church had been burned the night before.

His White House reporter told us that a “white house source” told her that the photo op was because Trump was upset about criticism that he was hiding in the bunker.

Meanwhile, another CNN reporter told us that Trump was so far off script that he sent the secret service scrambling to nearby rooftops – displacing their team. They had no idea that he was going to do that walk. So Cooper commented on how crazy and unprofessional Trump is because of that.

So here sits Cooper, reporting those facts to me, and editorializing continuously about how irresponsible and crazy Trump is and how the nation is in deep trouble because of that…

Meanwhile… he just reported that Trump planned and ordered the clearing of the square for a photo op – and at the same time reported that his staff and the secret service did not know anything about the photo op…. it was spontaneous.

This was all within a 10 or 15 minute period… by the same guy. It isn’t like he didn’t have the facts. He just chose to ignore the fact that his version of reality was completely inconsistent with the facts he was reporting.

This is the world that we live in today. The ministry of information might not be in control of the facts.. but there is definitely a similar force at work.

Eudaly said she didn’t want the presence of her bureau’s dump trucks to “imply that I was a supporter because those trucks are emblazoned with PBOT logos.’’

Eudaly said she understood why police would want to block access to the buildings, particularly the Justice Center to protect jail inmates, Multnomah County sheriff’s staff and law enforcement inside.

But she said, “I don’t think that using valuable city property that’s likely to be vandalized or destroyed is the only way to do that,’’ particularly when the city faces coronavirus-driven budget cuts.

Mark my words. In more than 5, but less than 20 years, they’ll dig the Confederates out of Hollywood Cemetery in their retarded belief that the only thing holding back black people is bones and marble. Fucking barbarians.

If Trump was the troll his fans think he is, he’d order the FDR memorial removed out of sensitivity to the Japanese-American community.

      • Winston

        Fucking barbarians.

So much for the civilizing effects of public schools, universities, trade and urbanization.

If only he were so clever!

    • Winston

So are there going to be any monuments left on Monuments Avenue or just that of Communists?

      • Viking1865

Arthur Ashe wasn’t a communist, as far as I know. But yeah, the rest will have to go. Stuart, Stonewall, Maury, and Davis all Confederates. They’ll probably replace them with some woke monstrosities.

      • Gustave Lytton

Next will be some movement to remove their names from history books. The opposite of the “say his name” going on now.

      • C. Anacreon

I wonder if they’ll come for my Civil War Chess Set.
Then Jeb Stuart won’t ride again!

    • Gustave Lytton

The one saving grace of the Civil War was that it essentially ended April 1865, and not with mass executions of southerners or 50 years of insurgency (yes, there was resistance against reconstruction and terrorism against newly free slaves, but those quickly became part of the legitimate government not an opposition against). Lee had much to do with that.

      • Winston

      • straffinrun

They gonna make Grant a devil for letting Lee keep his sword. It’s counterproductive to say the least.

      • Winston

Why is it counterproductive? The only people who care are racist redneck yokels who should be ignored.

      • Gustave Lytton

You’ve got to step it up. Those who don’t oppose whitewashing history are traitors, just like the confederates were.

Hehe. That’s why the only thing I posted on FB this week concerning the Floyd stuff was: I don’t care if you’re a protestor, a looter, a business owner or a cop, if you say, “If you aren’t with me, you’re against me!” I’m against you.

That triggered my prog friends and not my law’in order friends. Wonder why.

So, question for the Glibertariat: File this under “Boogaloo comes to my Backyard.”
Some “Karen” on Facebook – one of the worst of all examples – has organized a Derpbook event for our local shopping center. Important notes of context: I live out in the fucking middle of the Sonoran Desert, truly. We are a relatively new, planned community behind the Sierra Estrella Mountains. Lots of new construction, most homes are in the $400K range (and maybe some areas more than that), HOA requires landscaping, etc. Around me are mostly retired military, some LEOs, there’s an over 55 community, golf course, etc. IOW, I’m about as far off of the beaten path from the stupidity as one could think of being (intentionally, btw), but suddenly businesses in the shopping center are closing and events there being cancelled in light of this. According to the local barber where I was this morning, the Facebook post said “No rules.”
Now I’m trying to decide if I should go by tomorrow to watch this thing unfold or avoid it entirely. On the one hand, I don’t need to be there particularly, on the other hand, I’d like to see what kind of idiocy and idiots are going to show up to this thing. If someone is going to be there advocating “Death to Whitey,” I
d just assume be there to ID fuckheads for future reference. This is just down the street from me and where my wife and kids shop for groceries, get haircuts, etc. I just talked to my wife about it and I’m going to file it under “intel gathering op” and just stay to the side and see what happens, but this Virtue Signaling bullshit from facebook has now started to turn the dickheads who get attention there into “activists” who want to show their virtue in real life. None of which I would mind, but it seems to attract and combine opportunists and stupid people into a maelstrom of Puritanical zeal that can lead to bad outcomes if left unchecked.
    Question: open carry or concealed?

    • Gustave Lytton

Concealed. Don’t make yourself a target.

      • Gender Traitor

Agreed – concealed this time. If there are other such events, you can decide based in part on how this one goes.

      • straffinrun

My wife wants me to just stay in the shadows, which I am inclined to do, but it’s a bit disconcerting to think that the stupid has leaked this far south and off of the beaten path.

“The police operation began following the victim’s death during the celebration of a mystic ritual based on the inhalation of venom of the bufo alvarius toad,” Spanish police said in a statement.

The bufo alvarius toad, which is also known as the Colorado River toad, originates in northern Mexico and southwest United States, and secretes a venom containing a psychedelic substance known as 5-MeO-DMT. Its effects are comparable to the widely known hallucinogenic brew, ayahuasca.

My idea is “African Americans Always Get Cuts”.

Spread the word, whenever you are standing in a queue, if a black person arrives and you’re white, you will always let them step in front of you.

If this becomes a big thing remember it was my idea. June 3, 2020.

Remember 6 years ago when conservatives would point at the censorious college PC woke leftists and say “LOL, those kids are in for a rude awakening they enter the real world.”

That was always wrong. It was the rest of us who needed to brace for them.

    And libertarians did the same…

  52. Winston

We need to face facts: The SJW Woke crowd has won the Culture War and will crush us. It may be too late to stop. We let it happen since we thought it Could Not Happen because Libertarian Moment. We are just as foolish as those classical liberals who thought educated urbanites would never support Socialism or Communism.

    • Digby recommends Crelm toothpaste

      Pass.

      • Winston

        ?

What do you mean exactly? Perhaps I was being too collectivist by saying “we”?

      • Digby recommends Crelm toothpaste

You were. And, my meaning is, I pass on participating in whatever–that conversation, or giving up, or, whatever you’re advocating.

I’m not trying to be either flippant, or, insulting to you–apologies if that’s how this is coming across. But, I don’t feel like I’m crushed, nor do I feel like being crushed by culture.

Besieged? Yeah, I suppose so. Certainly at odds with many people. But, I’m going to stick with individualism in as many ways as I can. Anyone who wants to oppose me on it can lick the dirtiest part of my hole. If they want to get violent, or, put me in any kind of danger, I’ll respond with sufficient force.

And, that’s about as much as I want to ruminate on the matter.

      • Winston

Point is I think libertarianism may soon go from an ideology of a bunch of kooks to full blown Enemy of the People who deserve no space whatsoever be it online or offline.

      • JD is in the United Karendom

It occurs to me that I might be cut off entirely from this wonderful community by my benevolent leaders to protect me from “dangerous” and “hateful” ideologies online. Ironically I don’t find many kin among the “dangerous” and “hateful” ideologies among those in the UK because most of those just take collectivism in the other flavor, wanting the jackboot of government to enforce their agenda instead.

Help me Freedomland, you’re my only hope!

  53. Winston

As I’ve said before this also reveals a key flaw in the arguments over Social Media censorship and such. What if libertarianism or classical liberalism ever became one of those racist hateful ideologies that no decent person could support? It was predicated on the assumption that there would always be some media outlets willing to publish minority viewpoints and the majority would be willing to accept this since they fear government censorship or the mob turning on the them. But what if the majority is fine with government censorship or the mob suppressing views they don’t like?

    • JD is in the United Karendom

We’re all either evil white supremacists, or feeble-minded victims of gaslighting by evil white supremacists. I think the women and anyone with “minority” heritage (>1/1024th Cherokee) are given the benefit of the prog doubt by some so may be considered the feeble-minded “victims” of evil Koch propaganda (you know, the radical open borders, “Trump is icky”, hold police accountable, Koch propaganda), and the rest of us are just plain evil. You’d better get on your knees and repent.

Excuse my #whitefragility. You see how even though we’re above all this identarian cult of bullshit, any disagreement with the dogma of The Narrative is just decreed to be “white fragility” or “racism”, etc. It’s almost like the argument is so weak that the cultists have found convenient (and sadly, highly effective) ways of completely avoiding any need to ever offer any reasoned response.

  54. Mustang

I guess I’ll leave this here because I’m a bit at a loss and you all will probably understand it. I still check in and read stuff daily but I apologize for not interacting more. Life has just been busy, but now I am just angry. I’m bitter all the time and depressed (but not in a “end it all” way). I thought the reaction to the coronavirus was bad, but now I see we are just getting warmed up. It really hit me when my mom, a pretty staunch neocon, messaged me and expressed her frustration at the government’s reaction to the virus and then the police brutality we all know and love. She is upset by the possibility of not being with us. The wife and I are expecting our first child and I am being promoted soon, but my family may not be able to witness any of it because of the boot that is crushing them, and I have to admit something of an identity crisis because I know that I could be considered a piece of that boot. I still believe that my place is to stand in defense of others and their rights. I still believe that is the role of the military. Now, however, those rights are being trampled at home by both government and their unwitting (or perhaps, witting) puppets, and I’m stuck overseas just hoping that it doesn’t reach my family’s doorstep. Even my pregnant wife is ready to strap a gun to her waist and stand in front of storefronts and homes to make sure no harm befalls them and I couldn’t be more proud of her for the things she’s expressed to me.

Military leadership has now picked their side. I am a bit floored but based on recent life experience I am not surprised at all. The rot goes deep. I know it’s an intensely personal decision but I wonder where to draw the line. I know the overt act necessary for me to say “no more” and that line was crossed in DC, but I was not personally involved. At what point does it become tacit support though? I see what’s coming, and fast, from the top brass to the ranks and I don’t like it one bit. I want to believe that people will do the right thing. I want to believe so badly to the point of being naive about it, and that we can come back from this precipice, but I don’t think that’s going to be possible.

All I ask is please, wait until I get back to the US. I don’t want to be stuck here while the country and culture that I love burns. I am so tired of feeling helpless.

    • Festus

I can only be with you in spirit but I will be with you to the bitter end, Internet Stranger! Mustang, I’m glad you posted this. I wish I could respond with words of wisdom or meaningful support, but I feel woefully inadequate to the task as I have no experience with the military. As you know, though, many Glibs do, so I hope you’ll continue to talk with us as you’re able. I can say that I agree with you – the military DOES have a legitimate role in defending our rights, as does law enforcement. The trouble comes when the human beings involved forget that or develop a perverted perception of their proper role.

As Festus said, this weird little online community has become a refuge and a vital source of support for many of us, so I hope you will stay in touch and keep us posted. Best wishes!
