Saturday evening links of somnolence

by | Jul 25, 2020 | Daily Links | 404 comments

I know how they feel.

Day four with the wife’s best friend and her guy. So far, so good. We had one good round of smash liver Thursday night, but otherwise have been pretty sedate. With lots of naps. I think losing the ability to hang as we get older is the bodies self defense mechanism against our brains saying, “I’m still 25. Let’s go.”.

Drugs may fall out of my ass but this bares reposting. Peak asinine appears to be within site.

When it comes to peak derp though, we may very well be there.

I don’t think our yellow brothers future overlords are sending their best and brightest seeds.

Pretty sure this will all turn out well.

Who  dun it?

We just lost another legend.

Appropriate.

“According to the Southern Poverty Law Center, which monitors far-right groups in the US, Klayman, the founder of the Judicial Watch, is “a pathologically litigious attorney and professional gadfly notorious for suing everyone from Iran’s supreme leader to his own mother”.”

Then I guess it has to be true.

    • Scruffy Nerfherder

The SPLC is a grifting operation and an arm of the DNC. I don’t give a shit what they have to say about anything.

      • Tom Teriffic

The SCLC, (Southern Christian Leadership Conference) used to do this kind of heavy lifting for the D’s until it got out that the organization only had something like 800 dues paying members. Which short of precludes them from being the authoritative voice of anything. I wonder about the SPLC.

    • Chafed

I can confirm he sued his own mother. I handled her estate.

      • Playa Manhattan

Did you deal with him directly? He’s an absolute lunatic…

      • Chafed

I did for a short time. He started some trust litigation that I defended.

    • Drake

Another favorite. Mick and John just bang out a basic rhythm while Peter goes off into orbit.

  2. hayeksplosives

Well, crap. My dinner plans are canceled. We were going to see a band and eat fish and chips at the Moose Lodge, which has been reopened under new rules.

Now we got emailed and texted that the Sheriff told them they have to shut I down and not have any live entertainment.

Sigh. The Moose Lodge was a big LEO supporter, but if we get KarenCops outnumbering the good ones, that will change.

    • Nephilium

      Sorry to hear that hayek.

The random changes are probably the most upsetting thing to me.

    • Count Potato

Sorry, this whole situation sucks. I thought, back in March, it would have been long over by now.

      • Nephilium

Yeah. I figured this would be a couple week thing at most.

        /several months later

      • Count Potato

It’s all just insane. Everything happened so fast.

      • Subwoofer

Because they promised us that it would be?

        Sucker.

      • Count Potato

        No, that’s not the reason.

      • Aloysious

I used to think that the world around me wasn’t controlled and defined by insane people.

Like so many other things, I was wrong about that as well.

Stepped outside the house today. Boy, do I regret that.

    • Gender Traitor

Mucho sympathy. A friend of ours is playing this evening at our favorite local winery, but the rules they have to keep in place just to keep from getting shut down would have been such a PITA I suspect it would have ruined the evening for us. So home we stay.

      • Gender Traitor

Of course, I think I still have ten bottles left of the case I bought when this winery was only able to do curbside pickup orders or deliveries earlier in the panicdemic. Maybe it’s time to chill one of those babies and pop it open after a bit. And I get it all to myself!

      • Fourscore

Its always time to knock one down, alone or with someone (alone is better though)

      • Tom Teriffic

I was on the other side of the mic under those conditions there, remember? It wasn’t as much fun as it could have been and far more difficult to get the Teeming Hordes involved.

    • 61North

What’s your take on the LOM and WOTM merging?

      • hayeksplosives

A slack-jawed stare of ignorance is my take.

      • 61North

The men’s branch and the women’s branch are merging into a single organization. There was something about it in the newsletter but I admit to not looking very closely. As long as the drinks are cheap, I don’t have much of an opinion.

    • DEG

      Sorry.

  3. Count Potato

“A Milwaukee homicide victim has been identified as a well-liked fixture of the city’s Black community who supported Black Lives Matter and President Trump.”

Well, obviously he killed himself for being racist.

    • Nikkodemus

I have it on good authority that black people can’t be racist.

      • J. Frank Parnell

He wasn’t voting for Biden though, so he ain’t wasn’t black.

  4. Count Potato

“Darryl Collins, 30, was arrested Wednesday afternoon by Chicago police for illegally possessing ammunition, which was in a loaded handgun, according to the criminal complaint.”

So the gun was legal, but the ammunition wasn’t?

    • Ted S.

One of the uncommented on biases of media is which people/groups they quote as sources.

    • C. Anacreon

Interestingly, one group is a “far-right” militia who is hate-mongering and based on falsehoods, and the other is just a “militia”.

    • DrOtto

One group was carrying semiautomatic weapons. The other was carrying “heavy firearms”. Journalisting is hard and stuff.

    • Ted S.

Musk is denying an affair with Amber Heard or Johnny Depp?

      • mexican sharpshooter

        That is correct.

      • hayeksplosives

        Either way, Grimes is worse.

Note to all would-be gold diggers: Musk is a weird genius that would probably be barely tolerable in business, but would never, ever put a chick first.

He has a decent relationship with the mother of his children, but I’d be surprised if he marries again.

Grimes is kidding herself if she thinks she’s “The One.”

    • Viking1865

““Grimes publicly demands billionaire partner Elon Musk ‘turn off’ his phone after the billionaire tweets ‘pronouns suck’: ‘I cannot support hate’, she says”

Then move your shit out honey. But you won’t.

      • Subwoofer

If your response to “pronouns suck” is “I cannot support hate”, you must live in clown world!

      • egould310

I met Peter North about fifteen years ago. I had no idea who he was. Then later, I saw a porno and was like, “Hey! I know that dude!”

      • zwak

Meeting famous people is weird. I was in a bar in Sacramento that I used to hang out in, shooting pool. I ended up shooting about 10 sets with this burner looking dude, and after a while, a friend of both of ours told us about a party nearby. As we were walking over, he starts asking about what I did, things like that. Well, after a bit, I asked him the same. “Oh, I am a rock star.” Turns out he was the bassist from the Def Tones, Chi Cheng. Nice guy.

  8. Spudalicious

      • Old Man With Candy

What I love is that SP and I have been watching old Lone Ranger TV shows. Every time Tonto says something like, “Me follow outlaw band,” we start giggling, “…and by follow, mean rape.”

    • Rhywun

Florida overall had another grim day Thursday, reporting 10,273 new cases and 173 deaths, a record.

So Florida is where NY was three months ago. Wake me up when they get 1000+ deaths a day.

  11. Viking1865

If a black man who papered the windows of his store with Biden 2020 signs and stood on a corner holding Biden 2020 signs was murdered by some random guy, it would be front page news.

    • hayeksplosives

His friends count eulogize him: “Say what you will about Carl; as you can see by the signs in his windows, he was a man who knew he was black.”

  12. Rebel Scum

Sinclair Television said on Saturday it would delay airing an interview with a conspiracy theorist who claims baselessly that Dr Anthony Fauci, the country’s top infectious disease expert, created the coronavirus behind the current pandemic.

He didn’t create it, but he may have have acted politically in response to it. I did like how he wore a mask to make a futile attempt at pitching but later took it off while sitting next to people in the stands at a ball game.

    • blackjack

Well, like a mile or two from the “wet market,” there’s an infectious disease research center. Fauxchi is involved. Not big on deep conspiracy theories, but it’s not based on tin foil, I’ll give it that.

Rap superstar and fashion mogul Kanye West fired back at critics who doubt his ability to realistically compete in the 2020 presidential election after missing deadlines for several states, declaring that he can defeat Joe Biden by write-ins alone.

We’re having some Normals over for dinner tonight. Salad of arugula, grilled asparagus, dill, and walnuts (shamelessly copied from FnB, our favorite PHX-area restaurant), home-made ravioli di zucca with brown butter and sage, rainbow carrots and snap peas sauteed with tarragon, and a local gelato topped with marionberries in brandy (courtesy of our badly-missed buddy RAHeinlein).

Go eat your meat, this is some good shit.

Chefsteps Smashburgers tonight. The secret is gelatin in the ground beef to hold in moisture.

      • Yusef drives a Kia

        Gelatin? how much? per pound?

      • Playa Manhattan

1 packet gelatin and one egg yolk per pound. 1% salt by weight, salt when forming patties 30 minutes before cooking.

The trick for smash burgers is extreme crust/crunch and juiciness at the same time, and this is a pretty forgiving method.

      • Ted S.

        Doesn’t that make it treif?

      • Playa Manhattan

Some bovine gelatins are certified Kosher, but you’ll pay a premium.

It’s astounding how much teenage boys eat. My SIL is in high school, her boyfriend is I shit you not about 6’6” and 280 pounds. I have personally watched him eat 50 chicken wings, and then do the “are you gonna eat that?” eye balling of other people’s plates.

I recently watched the James Garner movie They Only Kill Their Masters, which, being released in the early 70s, has harvest gold and other nice 70s interior design.

        And a hot Katharine Ross.

      • Gender Traitor

        Nice harvest gold.

eg3, you could be sitting on a gold mine with that Corelle. Apparently folks collect that stuff for serious. My family had this pattern, and I think my oldest sister still has it and has hunted down some missing pieces (serving dishes and suchlike.)

      • egould310

Yeah. It’s a cool pattern. I have alot of pieces; butter dish, creamer, platters, stuff. I used to buy/restore/sell mid-century modern furniture/art/housewares.

The Corelle is all I have from that era. I’m probably gonna’ donate it to Sean, anyway.

      • Gender Traitor

Our early-’50s house still has the vintage pink bathroom (thankfully, it’s more “peach” than “Pepto”) with the deep burgundy trim tiles. I’d like to replace the peachy-pink toilet, but I suspect I’d have a heck of a time finding that color commode for less than an arm+leg.

      • Ted S.

Our house is 70s, and the back bathroom is still avocado green (Dad redid the master bath a dozen years ago). Well, the vanity is still there; the toilet was replaced some time back.

      • Rhywun

My apartment has I think the original salmon and black tiles from 1955 – I was in the basement the other day and for the first time I saw an open door leading to a bathroom I didn’t know was there and it was the exact same tiles.

      /several burnt meals…….

      • Incentives Matter

Does your oven allow you to program in an offset to correct for that?

      • pan fried wylie

Programmable: the shaft under the temp knob is just knurled, not keyed to one position.

      • Incentives Matter

Well, mine doesn’t have a “temp knob” (digital pad), but if his does, excellent. You know what to do, Yufus!

    • The Hyperbole

      Did you adjust for altitude?

    • Playa Manhattan

      Do you have a steel?

    • Tres Cool

True story- when Tres Sr. retired, he took over cooking responsibilities for him and my step mom. He noticed things done in the oven weren’t done ‘as advertised’, so he went Grainger and got a NIST-traceable thermocouple and display. I hate to think what he paid for it. Then, when he was bored, he went through every temperature setting on the oven (likely 5º increments) from lowest to full-blast. All the information recorded, he sat down with a calculator, and either reverse-log or linear integration, he made a chart, with numbers on the back showing what each apparent temperature correlated to actual temperature. Then he cut it out, went to the UPS store had it lamenated, and still has it in the drawer next to the oven.

      • Incentives Matter

Your Dad might be my spirit animal.

The spousal unit kept complaining that she couldn’t get her soft-boiled eggs to turn out right. I got out the Thermapen and a digital timer and went and bought two dozen large chicken eggs. Then I made her cook eggs, 1 minute apart for ten minutes, first with boiling water immersion, and then with starting from cold water. She now has an entire chart of what times she needs to cook an egg to reach a specified level of “doneness” at our altitude.

Now I have to do that for a turkey. It never ends.

      • Incentives Matter

Forgot to mention: all the eggs were the same temp (straight from the fridge).

      • Jarflax

White colonial raicst sciencism. You left out every important metric. What was the gender identity of the chicken laying the egg? What color were these eggs? Were these eggs properly local sourced? Were the chickens allowed to freely range? Was the egg layed on a commune run according to racial justice principles? And most importantly are you white? and if so how dare you!

      • Ted S.

I found this for “only” $389.

    Kill whitey.

The draft 2020 Democratic National Committee platform being circulated in Washington aims to reinforce the view that liberals are best situated to battle for minorities seeking higher wages, better housing and jobs, and more money for schools.

With the August convention coming on the heels of the Black Lives Matter protests, it features support for the movement and an expanded pledge to root out racism.

The preamble says, “We will give hate no safe harbor. We will never amplify or legitimize the voices of bigotry, racism, misogyny, anti-Semitism, Islamophobia, or white supremacy.”

In promising change, it sets up one group that has it too good and is holding minorities back: whites.

In more than 80 pages in the draft platform published by Politico, whites are mentioned 15 times, all critical, including three references to white supremacy or supremacists and one to white nationalists. The document doesn’t capitalize white as it does Black, Latinos, Asian Americans, and Native Americans.

In most mentions, the reference is to how whites are better off at the expense of others. And the promise often is to “close the gap” between minorities and whites, though no solutions are offered.

    • Drake

Whitey is down to what, 65% of the population? Sounds like they may be jumping the gun. But they are honest, they hate the white man and think we’ll keep on playing along if they screw us.

    • Rebel Scum

      The draft platform.

      Interesting bit…

Democrats will enact universal background checks, end online sales of guns and ammunition,
13 close dangerous loopholes that currently allow stalkers and some individuals convicted of assault
14 or battery to buy and possess firearms, and adequately fund the federal background check
15 system. We will close the “Charleston loophole” and prevent individuals who have been
16 convicted of hate crimes from possessing firearms. Democrats will ban the manufacture and sale
17 of assault weapons and high capacity magazines. We will incentivize states to enact licensing
18 requirements for owning firearms and “red flag” laws that allow courts to temporarily remove
19 guns from the possession of those who are a danger to themselves or others. We will pass
20 legislation requiring that guns be safely stored in homes. And Democrats believe that gun
21 companies should be held responsible for their products, just like any other business, and will
22 prioritize repealing the law that shields gun manufacturers from civil liability.

1 Democrats are committed to guaranteeing schools are spaces of physical and psychological
2 safety for students and educators alike. Guns have no place in our schools. We disagree strongly
3 with the Trump Administration’s dangerous and short-sighted suggestion that teachers should
4 bring firearms into the classroom.

Thought-crime, no 2A, punishing makers for the misuse of their products and leave children to be sitting ducks. Democrats are insane authoritarians that cannot be allowed to have power.

If I’m Donald Trump, I’m coming up on stage at the debates (and if Biden stays in his basement, I’m absolutely holding it on stage at a rally. Further thoughts below*) and I am saying something like “Hey we’re all Americans here. It’s ok to be whatever kind of American you are or want to be. It’s ok to be straight. It’s ok to be gay. It’s ok to be rich. It’s ok to be poor. It’s ok to go to college, it’s ok to go to work. It’s ok to be black, and it’s ok to be white.”

*If Biden hides in his basement, Trump should go on stage at an absolutely enormous rally. Like, the biggest venue he can find. He should give a solid chunk of the tickets to every Democratic legislator, with the only requirement being that they go to people in their district, so it’s a balanced crowd. He should have Biden up on stage on a four sided monitor thing so everyone can see his drooling, wide eyed, fuzzy brain. He should insist that the moderator come live and in person, to questions from the audience. Have the questions voted on in real time, really get people involved.

Seattle’s police officers will now respond to protests and rioting through “adjusted deployment” methods because of a new city law that bans them from using some crowd-control tools, the city’s police chief said Friday.

The new law, which takes effect Sunday, “bans Seattle Police officers the use of less lethal tools, including pepper spray that is commonly used to disperse crowds that have turned violent,” police Chief Carmen Best said in a statement.

“Simply put,” Best added, “the legislation gives officers NO ability to safely intercede to preserve property in the midst of a large, violent crowd.”

Miami Mayor Francis Suarez (R) explained that while the city’s number of daily new cases is down, the virus is still being spread easily through households, as multigenerational households are commonplace in Miami.

“I would tell our residents — and this is voluntary, this is not something that we can mandate — that they should consider, particularly if they have a multigenerational household, wearing masks indoors at times with their multigenerational residents and also respecting social distance when they’re at home,” Suarez told reporters.

And masks are totally effective at doing anything more than preventing your dentist from coughing into your mouth and are in no way the same relation to viruses that a chain-link fence is to mosquitoes.

      • blackjack

nevermind that, how is it that a respiratory virus is so unknowable that they started with an admonishment to NOT wear them? Is all of this new? The course of human history led them to sternly disavow masks and then change course 180 degrees a few short months later? The closest comparable was Sars1 and the Asians were wearing the fucking masks back then. If it’s masks, then it always was masks. Pretty sure it was because we knew early on that this one was 99.5 percent survivable. Now, we know there’s a huge political upside to all of the fear mongering.

      • Gustave Lytton

The decision to discourage mask use based upon the scarcity of rated manufactured masks. The CDC guidance from 15 years ago was that the general public should use facecoverings in the event of a influenza pandemic. Obviously sars-cov-2 isn’t influenza, but there are somethings that carry over. There was also enough doubt early on, thanks largely to Chinese misinformation funneled through WHO.

      • Gustave Lytton

Early doubt about the means of transmission, that is.

O’erhang and nutty her confounded face,

I’m not ready, IMO ,but my Brothers say I am, Yikes! the 1st hole is 1200 feet long, a huge par 5

    • Gustave Lytton

Good luck Team Yusef! Tall cans!

      • Yusef drives a Kia

Going to be 150 entrants, and I know the top players, I should fit in the middle if I play calm,

    • Chafed

That is genuinely funny because of the irony. I take it SPD is under a consent decree for bad behavior. Federal judge is in effect saying SPD gets to keep their pepper balls, etc because without it things will get deadlier.

  39. Plinker762

Is it problematic for a white person to drive a black car? How about a red or yellow one?

    • Gustave Lytton

      Yes. It’s a Black car.

      • Plinker762

She-it. How about a sub-lime or plumb crazy purple?

      • Gustave Lytton

Drive the wrong way? Sorry, that’s what I’ve got, I’m just doin time.

    • Yusef drives a Kia

hold your breath and drive a Blue Car?

      • Plinker762

        Lol

  40. Plinker762

For the sake of wokeness, should a master switch now be labeled an overseer switch?

    • Rhywun

      *faints*

    • salted earth

In the effort to get to year zero there will be no more electricity. The word “switch” is also problematic.

      • Plinker762

No Bicycles either because they are traitors to straightcycles and/or gaycycles

      • salted earth

How many wheels do I need to not be canceled?

      • R C Dean

        Yes.

      • Rhywun

        LOL perfect answer for 2020.

      • Don Escaped Spring Training

        laffs the next morning

    • Rhywun

“Portland Moms” is one of the more ridiculous manifestations of the madness of this year. I was out of touch for a couple weeks so when I heard about it yesterday I just shook my head in disbelief.

      • Plinker762

That’s your reward for getting back in touch with the world.

    • Plinker762

Everyone holding a camera over their head is kind of funny. They all want their gotcha photo of the other side.

  41. TARDIS

As expected, XX says she’ll be late, disappears, and expects me to take care of guest kitteh. Lets see, by late, you mean tomorrow morning? Boy cat is adorable. Typical cat behavior. Come adore me. Me: No, want attention, come to me. I tried to get a good photo of his face. It’s kind of interesting. He has a white ring around his mouth. I’m calling it a Cat Van Dyke.

    • salted earth

After reading the first few words I thought the paragraph was going to go a different direction than it did.

      • TARDIS

Only two x’s there. Sorry to disappoint.

      • salted earth

It was the words expected and late, I thought you were being pretty calm given your recent stress level.

      • Plinker762

I think it was the late part, not the number of Xs.

      • salted earth

        😉

      • TARDIS

        You people are awful.????

  42. dbleagle

This man was huge in Arizona in the 1970’s and early 80’s. He never wanted to be national, and had great concerts.

This is a good song for this group.

    Tall Cans!

    • salted earth

What’s the latest on the hurricane?

      • dbleagle

Oahu is under a hurricane warning. We will be hit within about 24 hours from now. A little jig north and we’ll stay with tropical force winds. A little jog south and we’ll have hurricane force winds. The first outer belts are bringing light rain now and I can hear the surf building.

Doug is skirting north of Hawaii so our two blockers (Mauna Loa and Mauna Kea) are out of position. One model has the eye passing over Kauai arounf midnight tomorrow.

If you visit windy.com you can zoom and and get a good idea of the storm track prediction hour by hour.

      • salted earth

Thanks for the update. Stay safe.

      • hayeksplosives

        Wishing you the best, Double!

      • Festus' Mustache

Stay safe dbl! We need updates from the land of milk and honey (and cannabilism).

      • Plinker762

        The Hurricane died in 2014.

      • salted earth

        😉

  43. Festus' Mustache

Hey! I fixed the dishwasher and Youtube helped!

    • DenverJ

      Yay!

    • salted earth

      Gold star for Festus!

  44. DenverJ

No mention of the lack of an environment conducive to meeting and mingling genes… but yeah, the lack of social life is in no way responsible for the decrease in the American population.

    • salted earth

Wait…aren’t we supposed to want a population decrease to save us climate change?

      • Plinker762

We need more youngins to pay off the national debt

      • salted earth

        deletes comment

    • Festus' Mustache

We’re all required to use glory holes now.

      • salted earth

The sample is in the mail.

      • Festus' Mustache

        They can’t have my essence!

  45. hayeksplosives

I knew that Portland and Austin argue anout which city owns “Keep {City} Weird!” But I was surprised to see Austin torch itself so they don’t come in second to Portland again.

Austin even managed s shooting death of a protester!

    • Tejicano

Oregon always seems to me to be something like what would be left of California should everything south of the San Andreas separate and roll into the sea. It’s like they’re trying to be California but don’t have the headcount and urban centers.

Austin is just where all the lefty/freaking people in Texas gravitate to – including the imports to the state.

  46. hayeksplosives

Seattle, Portland, Austin. All well to do, educated, deeply blue cities. No massive poverty problem.

The education part is what’s interesting. I watched a French historian explain that the Einsatzgruppen leaders were chosen from young, educated men, because only intellectuals could use rhetoric and spin effectively to make ruthless killers out of ordinary men.

    • Festus' Mustache

I’ve read that too. The framing device was that those young men were willing to do the bidding of their superiors because they believed that other people were inferior to themselves. Einsatzgruppen were also manned by a majority of former police officers. Make of that what you will.

      • Gustave Lytton

Poor E.D. Just like how BLM coopted legitimate police & legal reform, they in turn are getting supplanted by white majority antifa. Boo hoo.

      • Stinky Wizzleteats

All narrowly focused grass roots political groups seem to get co opted by either grifters or radical psychopaths. Occupy was, the Tea Party was, and now BLM has been.

      • UnCivilServant

I’m afraid both Occupy and BLM were already marxist drivel, so they started out full of grifters and radical psychopaths.

  47. Gustave Lytton

Weird weather this summer. Leaves are already starting to turn and fall, three months early. Hasn’t been particularly hot yet either.

    • Festus' Mustache

Wet, wet, wet here. The grain is standing over shoulder height.

  48. UnCivilServant

    Mornin’ Glibs.

Why am I awake at 6am on a sunday?

Oh, yeah… I have to go out in public for the first time since… I forget.
