GlibFit 4.0 – Coronavirus Edition XXVI: Time for Kick Off!

by | Sep 13, 2020 | Fitness, GlibFit | 265 comments

Today is the first Sunday of the new football season. In years past, this was a cause for great celebration, beer drinking, and overeating. I know there is a divide in the Glibertariat between those who are so sick of the SJW nonsense they told the NFL to get bent and those of you who will spend the day on the couch. I have very mixed feelings but I’m pretty certain, with or without football, most of you will find a reason for drinking today.

As for me, I probably won’t be around for the comments today unless SP forgoes the Sunday Night Open Post. So, feel free to talk behind my back. There has been some tension in the Chafed house, and I am heading over to my best friend’s house to talk, watch football, and drink too much.

On the workout front, I’m about ready to scream. My gym is part of a chain with locations in several states. I received an email weeks ago their Nevada locations had received permission to reopen. I’m choking while writing “permission” about a business that helps people get or stay healthy. At least they are open, and the little people can get back to it.

My local location emailed me this week that the outdoor portion can reopen. You must reserve a workout time, there are severe limitations on the number of people, and it’s $5 per session. *eyeroll* I’m not mad at the gym. They are doing all they can inside a regime that threatens their existence.

Fortunately, Gavin Newsom believes in SCIENCE! so I know the same rules apply to everyone. Because we’re all in this together or alone together or something…. Then I read about what’s going on in San Francisco. How far into triple digits can my blood pressure go before blood shoots out of my eyes?

My one hope is some gadfly tracks the lack of any Covid hotspots in city owned gyms and somehow manages to embarrass every gauleiter. A man can dream, can’t he?

I don’t have a Twatter account but sometime around the start of The Troubles I became aware of Alex Berenson. He’s a former NYT reporter who has a very skeptical view of how the government has handled things. You can find him here. If you really want to get your anti-government rage on, then just scroll down his posts.

This week’s music choice. I’m not quite sure how but it seems apropos.

I heard this while listening to Eddie Trunk and writing this article.

Black man trapped again

Holds his chains in his hand

Brother kills brother for the profit of another

Game point, nobody wins

I very much doubt that song could be released today. Related, I miss MikeS.  Anyone know what’s become of him?

Anyone know what’s become of him?

As I understand it, he had to cut back commenting for work-related reasons.

    • l0b0t

Ted, your doggo is beautiful; those eye markings are great. Until recently, my mom lived on a farm in VERY rural Alabama. She had a similar problem during hunting season. Also, apparently, very many backwoods assholes abandon their coon hounds in the woods if they underperform. So, in addition to the trespassing hunters, she would have black and tan hounds showing up randomly. She ran an adoption/rescue group for many years.

      • Ted S.

We live next to 1000 acres of state forest, so we can’t do anything about hunters. There aren’t many on the state land to be honest, but you never want to take a chance.

I believe the guy who used to hunt on our woodlot moved down to SC to escape Cuomo’s reign of terror.

      • Ted S.

At any rate, the dog and I got walks in yesterday and today. Ran into a couple twice on Saturday; since we were going opposite directions, we met up twice. Ran into two larger groups of bikers today, but as is almost always the case, the mountain bikers are nice people — and they all say the dog is beautiful.

Monday being Labor Day, I went by myself up to a different area of state forest that has a small recreation area with picnic tables and whatnot attached. Big mistake. Lots of people from God knows where walking the main trail, with half of them masked and seemingly pissed that I wasn’t wearing one. (Normally, the dog is my social distancing.) The best one was two older guys where one of them was masked up and one wasn’t.

Those are probably Cubans. Not real Latinos.

There has been some tension in the Chafed house

Sorry Chafed. I hope for the best.

Repeating because I can: This site is better than PornHub. I’ve never given PornHub money. I’ve donated to the Recall Gavin campaign.

My one hope is some gadfly tracks the lack of any Covid hotspots in city owned gyms and somehow manages to embarrass every gauleiter. A man can dream, can’t he?

    Yep.

I had some Schadenfreude when I read the news that Nashua’s mayor tested positive for Lil Rona. He pushed the mask ordinance.

Onto to GlibFit: My weight is slightly up. According to my body fat analyzer, I increased both fat and lean mass. I’m not too worried about a small one time increase in fat weight. The weights I use during my workouts are still going up, though I am still below pre-disc herniation strength levels.

I was discharged from physical therapy last Thursday. There really isn’t more my physical therapist can do at this point. I need time. I need to continue my stretching and other physical therapy work. I need to slowly reintroduce things at the gym plus continue to work on form. My PT did an evaluation, and my flexibility has improved greatly. I can get my right leg up to 45 degrees for a single leg raise and my left leg up to 75 degrees. This is huge.

At the gym I deadlifted with more than a dowel rod for the first time in a long time. It was a measly 10 lb kettlebell but I was able to deadlift it through the full range of motion and without pain.

This week’s music choice. I’m not quite sure how but it seems apropos.

    I liked this one.

    • Sean

      Sounds like good progress. Congrats!

        Thanks!

      Great job, D.

Who cares what the weight is? Next week, a little more. Then the week after that.

Pretty soon you will be kicking sand in Warty’s face!

      • Nephilium

Max wattage here is over 1,100 watts from the legs alone. I can temporarily power a microwave!

      My apologies.

I’m choking while writing “permission” about a business that helps people get or stay healthy. At least they are open, and the little people can get back to it.

‘Way back in May, some guy took offense when I referred to the “crypto-Stalinist” overtones of having random government functionaries declaring businesses nonessential. I haven’t seen or spoken to him since. I wonder if he has pulled his head out of his ass, or if he’s still all gung ho for lockdowns. I assume he is. And, of course, his income was completely unaffected by the closure of other people’s businesses.

      Hell yes.

But you are too skinny anyway! 😉

      • Yusef drives a Kia

    • DEG

      Yep.

  6. westernsloper

I don’t know the gym policies in CO because I don’t go to a gym but in mask news I stopped at Wmart on my way home from work yesterday and I would say half the people in the store where shopping unmasked on a busy Saturday afternoon. I think most people gave the bullshit a chance just to not make waves but seems at least around here a lot of people are done. As more and more info comes out the glaring over reaction of the Top Men is becoming obvious and people are paying attention. At least that is my hope. My hope is also that all businesses just say fuck it and open back up.

    • Yusef drives a Kia

Walmart is under rules to not push masks, the ADA might have something to say about it you know,
      / COPD

      • westernsloper

Two weeks ago there was probably 98% compliance. That has dropped by half.

    • DEG

I stopped using instacart and starting going to grocery stores again.

I got word through the Reopen NH group that the state threatened a local grocery store chain because some workers wore face shields. The Clown Prince’s rules require masks. The state told the chain that all employees must wear masks or the stores will be shut down. Many employees at the chain weren’t keen on masking to begin with, and those ignored shoppers without masks. Now, they’re pissed and more employees are joining their ranks..

The last two weeks I shopped at a store in this chain without a mask. No customer or employee said anything to me. In fact, the employees were quite friendly. I saw only one other person shopping without a mask. There were lots of people in the store.

    • blackjack

Out here, the massive fires have made the masks start to make a tiny bit of sense.

  7. The Late P Brooks

I stopped at Wmart on my way home from work yesterday and I would say half the people in the store where shopping unmasked on a busy Saturday afternoon.

Good. I ran in to Murdoch’s (ranch supply) a few days ago. Not many masks in evidence. Still lots of masks at the grocery store.

    • westernsloper

Murdoch’s here you will be hard pressed to find a masked person that is not an employee.

  8. Tundra

Fuck, Chafed. We need to get you out of that place. This isn’t the Chafed that motivated us to get up off our fat asses and get it done!

Sorry to hear things are challenging right now. Every one of us of a certain age and experience nod knowingly and wish you the best.

I’m getting insanely hardcore about the lockdown of gyms. The manager of mine told me that the Health Stasi are sending people in hoping to catch them fucking up. Even though healthy people are the ones helping get us through the ‘pandemic’, by allowing the virus to run its course. Fuck off, slavers.he

Yeah, yeah, I know. “Set up your own home gym, bitch.” I work here most of the time and love getting the fuck out for a workout. I also love the people I’ve gotten to know over the last bunch of years. And I love the pretty girls. Sue me.

I’ve just listened to your first song three times in a row. Fucking awesome.

Anyone know what’s become of him?

Busy as hell. He’s good, though.

Thanks, man. This week will be better.

    • westernsloper

Busy as hell. He’s good, though.

Pass this on to him from all of us………..????????????????????????????????????????

    • DEG

The manager of mine told me that the Health Stasi are sending people in hoping to catch them fucking up.

The staff at mine said they’ll only enforce the Clown Prince’s rules. The Nashua mask ordinance they’re ignoring. The Clown Prince’s rules require masks as you move through the lobby. That’s the only time I wear a mask.

Unfortunately, I see more and more people working out while wearing a mask. Sad.

And I love the pretty girls.

#metoo. Except when they’re wearing a mask while working out.

It’s good that MikeS is doing well.

    • Gustave Lytton

the Health Stasi are sending people

So creating unnecessary vectors for spread of covid…. got it.

    Occupy Trader Joes

Black Lives Matter activists occupied a Trader Joe’s in Seattle this week, claiming to be protesting “lack of access to grocery stores” and explaining to patrons “how capitalism exploits the working class.”

I was going to offer come advice on how to make sure there are even less grocery stores near you, but looks like you already figured it out.

    • Hyperion

      some, damnit.

      ?‍♂️?‍♂️?‍♂️?‍♂️

    • Mostly Peaceful JaimeRoberto

We’ll all be equal when nobody has grocery stores.

      • Hyperion

That’s how this always works out. Now we’re all equally poor and miserable, and probably starving, yay!

      • blackjack

When they outlaw grocery stores, only… well, you know. Talk about Molon Labe!

      • TARDis

I went shopping for the wife today because the mask thing really sets her off and I want a peaceful Sunday evening. I came back with more prepper November food, and she was annoyed. Meh, better it goes to waste than not have eats when the SHTF.

  10. IRBE

Hi CHafed (if that is really you..I heard you were stolen or something), Greetings from NOCal. Still smokey here..but not as smokey as it was before…Gym still closed but hiking has been great this week since there has been no one on the trails; due to smoke. What a bunch of pussies. Thought about wearing a mask for the smoke but didn’t ; after thinking about the Marlboro 100 filters and still getting a pretty full lung of smoke from them.

I didn’t do the fast this week since my son was heading out to Grad school and I wanted to have a couple of good meals with him before he left. I think this week is better to try.

Other NOCal smokeagendon news: 49ers might have to cancel game due to smoke. 80’s and 90’s bars were smokey-er… Thinking about cancelling football games and remembering the ’81 AFC championship… I have never been that cold (-21F) and that happy. Good times.

I guess I outed myself as a Bengal fan…perhaps the loneliest fan in NOCal; considering the SB loses. I am thinking of taking another sabbatical year or decade. Maybe next year if the Raiders play them in LV–I’ll fly down for that if things are open.

Have a great week, keep moving and skip a meal of 3.

    • Tundra

      Hiya IRBE!

      What’s your fasting routine?

      • IRBE

Hey Tundra, I typically fast 18hrs a day. Last feed at ~5pm and then eat at 11 or noon next day. Once a month I do an extended fast of 44-48 hrs. Sometimes it is dry and other times just electrolytes water. I confess to drinking morning coffee because of withdrawals (head aches) and I just like it. Most important to the fast is the refeed. I have messed up on that before and the results were not pleasant. Refeed that works for me is eggs and steak in moderation.

      • Tundra

I always have coffee, sometimes with MCT oil. I don’t care if it’s not ‘pure’ fasting.

I am not trying to lose weight right now, but I still don’t usually eat until noon or later. It’s become the routine. If I have coffee (with or without MCTs) I am generally not hungry for 16 hours or more. But if I wake up hungry, I eat.

        That seems pretty natural.

I haven’t done an extended fast. I may try a 2 or 3 day just for shits and grins. Do you do any measurements?

      • IRBE

I think 48h is easily doable for you. It kind of sucks at 24-30 hr mark for me..but that passes and at 40-48 h it is pleasant.

I will take a weight measurement at start, 24 hrs and end before refeed. I typically lose 4-6 pounds from Tstart to Tb4refeed. The t24 is interesting because the weight loss is sometimes very minimal (1lb).

After about a week, I am down 3 pounds. Depending on discipline I can keep it off; until I don’t and then it time for another fast.

I bounce btw 168 and 173, which is pretty good for me.

I am going to try a 72hr this week, which I have never.

      • Tundra

        Interesting.

I’ve done 24+ many times. The cool part of this is that if you are in a situation with shitty food (i.e. traveling), you can simply fast with no downside.

        Please post your results.

I may try a 72 hour one, too. I’ve got a glucose/ketone meter, so I’ll take a bunch of readings.

    • C. Anacreon

We had been planning for some old friends to come over this afternoon for a social distancing barbecue in our backyard. But we woke up to a fine layer of ash covering our patio furniture after cleaning it just last night. Wife is freaking out and canceled the barbecue. Now she wants to get the cats into the car and drive east until we can find somewhere with relatively clean air (which has to be a minimum four hours, probably more). I’ve been holding her off for now, but I understand her anxiety.

We’ve pretty much exhausted all possible disasters for the year and it’s only September. What’s left? I’m thinking a space alien invasion. Perhaps that would unite the people of the world in a common cause? I wouldn’t even count on that.

      • DEG

        Yikes.

Hopefully the fires don’t get closer to you.

      • IRBE

Hi C.A, Sorry to hear about bbq cancellation. Based on my casual observation, west and north were less smokey and I saw some blue skies toward Martinez when I was hiking in the hills…it was smokiest along on the 24 corridor. On the bright-non-diffused side, I think the wind is supposed to pick up tonite and clear out some.

      • Mostly Peaceful JaimeRoberto

Smoky as hell between Lamorinda and the Tri Valley. I don’t even want to go out for a beer.

      • IRBE

I am hopeful the wind and rain in the PNW clear things up here before PGE does the seasonal power outages. WTF happened to Cali.

      • blackjack

Um, Shaver lake’s on fire. I guess it’s possible the smoke is headed south, but I’d guess the Big Valley is smokey as fuck. You probably got to go north and east. Just saying. Maybe Tahoe is clear, or Lake Almanor? IDK.

      • Ted S.

but I’d guess the Big Valley is smokey as fuck.

        Barbara Stanwyck hardest hit.

Nick! Heath! Jarrod! There’s a fire in the barn!

  11. Nephilium

To stay on topic, I’ve bent the curve back downward on my weight (even including a weekend at Put-In-Bay and Cedar Point). As of this morning, I’m down 3 pounds from my most recent high weight, and hope to keep the trend line pointing downward.

I did pick up a Cubii to try to help me burn calories while sitting at a desk for ~12 hours a day, and it seems to be helping. Today, I did cheat and get Goldie Hot wings with fries and beer. I need some sanity in my life.

    • Ted S.

I did pick up a Cubii to try to help me burn calories while sitting at a desk for ~12 hours a day,

      Not a Hawaii Chair?

      • Nephilium

I actually want to exercise, not be swung around.

I scoffed at the Cubii at first, but after ~20 minutes using it (at a time, I’m usually at ~2 hours a day on it) I have some respect for it.

    • DEG

      Congratulations on the weight loss!

      • Nephilium

At this point, I’m just trying to get myself back to pre-lockdown weight. That’s what irritates me the most. And I know it’s all my fault, no one else’s. My goal is calorie counting 5 days a week (and keeping it at ~1,500 for those days), and not counting for two. It worked for me before, now I just need to keep it up for the rest of the year again.

      • DEG

I’m lower than my pre-lockdown weight. I credit that to working from home (no work snack bar to graze on) and more physical activity despite the lockdowns.

  12. Drake

My NJ gym is open but business is slow. There were only 3 or 4 other people there while I was there today. Good for me – I don’t even have to pretend to wear mask that way. Bad for the owner who isn’t sure if he’s staying in business. He’s hoping things pick up when the weather turns.

My lifts and cardio are slowly getting back to pre-covid levels.

    • Nephilium

On the cardio side, the spin studio I’ve been going to has been booking classes (at least the ones outside of normal work hours) like mad. You have to book them almost when they become available if you want your preferred seat (my two favorite are under both fans and A/C vents).

      • Drake

I’m more of an elliptical guy than the bike.

      • Nephilium

As a cyclist, I’ll stick to what I know won’t hurt me. The times I’ve done a standing elliptical for more then a minute, my knees start clicking. I’m still trying to figure out what I’ve done to my right shoulder, as it’s still generally sore after a anything stressing it.

      • Rhywun

        *looks down at stomach*

        Me too.

    • DEG

      Fingers crossed he’ll pull through.

It’s good that you’re getting back to pre-Lil Rona Insanity levels.

  13. Gender Traitor

Ended up swimming at yet a fourth local YMCA location Thursday – the one closest to my house started swimming lessons during my usual after-work slot in the last week or two, and the one in the adjacent county (but reasonably accessible from my office) inexplicably allowed no reservations past 4 p.m. Thursday. Ended up at one not too far from home and actually easier to get to from the interstate than nearest-to-home Y. Nice pool – six lanes, no waiting, or in this case, no sharing. (Last time I had to share a lane, the other guy swam right into me.) This latest location may be my go-to pool from now on. I appreciate how lucky I am to have these options.

On non-swim days, I try to get on the treadmill. Did 45 minutes last Sunday and Monday, but after skipping a day to swim, I could only manage 30 minutes on Wednesday and Friday. Some of that may have to do with how late in the evening I start. Meant to get in some treadmill time yesterday but just plain forgot. I’ll hop on later today after naptime and after Sunday Big Brunch (waffles & sausage) has fully digested. Weight is still holding steady but stubbornly refusing to drop.

Will think good thoughts for you & yours, Chafed, for whatever it’s worth.

    • Tundra

Weight is still holding steady but stubbornly refusing to drop.

Wander on up to the weight room, GT! I promise results…

      • DEG

        Seconded.

      • Nephilium

Thirded, and no, you will not accidentally become a “weight lifting woman” as my girlfriend is afraid of becoming if she does any resistance/weight training.

      • Tundra

Even if she did, who cares?

Strong is better than weak. Lean is better than fat. Being harder to kill is ALWAYS a good thing.

Go to the weight room. Right fucking now!

      • Gender Traitor

I have two pairs of 3-lb. hand weights, one pair of 5-lb’ers, and a pair of adjustable dumbbells with a total of four 2.5 lb. and four 6 lb. weights for them. Anything I can do with those? On gym days, prepping for and cleaning up after swimming pretty much takes up all my time there. I have outrageously expensive hair color to protect from the chlorine, dammit!

      • Tundra

Yep, you can do some stuff with those, but I want you to aim bigger.

Your Y has a weight room. It would make you all tingly to go to the weight room and learn to squat, bench, deadlift and press. Loading your skeleton makes you stronger and builds bone mass. None of the supplements really does shit. Chicks need bone mass!!

There are a ton of resources out there. If any of us can help, we will.

        Lift heavy shit!

      • Gender Traitor

        Chicks need bone mass!!

No argument here! Especially post-menopausal white chicks with small frames. To give you an idea how small – I can wrap one hand around my other hand’s wrist joint and touch the tip of my middle finger to my thumb. And I have clubbed thumbs.

I do take a calcium supplement every day, but I know the weight-bearing exercise is more effective. I’ll see if I can work in another day at the Y just for weight work. Maybe Saturdays – I can do that with Tom T. That’s the sort of thing he does when he goes (which he hasn’t done for a while, mainly because of the mask crap.)

I’ve got an MRI this week on my good foot: might have some dead bone that’s causing a tendon and articulation problem. I need to get this done while I’ve paid off my deductible.

while I’ve paid off my deductible.

We’re considering doing my left rotator cuff; my only hangup is that I won’t be able to close the car door.

My husband has some vein thing he needs done to his lower legs, but he has to prep for a couple of months for that, so the plan would be to do my rotator cuff, then his legs at the end of the year.

      • TARDis

Mojo, I had a vein thing done to my lower legs a couple years ago. What requires prep?

      • Mojeaux

The vein place wants him to wear some compression thing for 60 days.

      • TARDis

Okay, that makes sense. I had my procedure done during the last week of December since it was going to be “free”. They knew that when they scheduled me.

It was well past a time when anyone would know, and we were always at motorcycle events. He almost got with a few chicks because of it, but it was crazy fun. 20. Ozymandias

I’m going to try a variation on the 1 squat + each day. I’m at Day 3 of this:

    Day 1: 1 pullup, 2 pushups, 3 squats
    Day 2: 2/4/6
Day 3: 3/6/9… and so on until I get to the end of the month (should be 25 pullups, 50 pushups, 75 squats).

    Some rules I use.
A – Do this sometime in the morning after I get up (close to ‘first thing’ as possible)
B – Do each exercise in one complete set (pullups start DH until 15 and then “whatever it takes” to get chin over the bar)
C – After each 5 days completed, add in something else in the evening.

    Here are the something elses:
Day 6-10: Start at 1/2/3 again in the PM and continue up through 5/10/15
Day 11-15: Start at 500m row and add 250m each time up to 1500m
Day 16-20: 10-20-10 of back squats at 95/135/185

Wife and I are starting back to the gym on Tuesdays and Thursdays and I’m playing hockey on Wednesday nights, so I’m hoping to trim off some of this lockdown excess and get back down to fighting trim (~180 lb, which usually has me at about 12% BF.) HUGE help has been the heat finally breaking; now I can start running again without risking death in the desert.

Thought so. Ok, I am down with this. Except the last time I tried a pullup it hurt. I tore my right bicep 2016(?) and never got it fixed so it is weak as most of Hyperboles arguments. So the pullups will be lacking but I will give it a shot until I can.

Good thing, or you chose a poor namesake.

After a couple of weeks of slacking off physically due to vacation and then rain, back to lifting heavy rocks tomorrow until I get too sore, for the hiking trail I’m building.

Cancelled gym membership when all this shite started.

  23. Gustave Lytton

Sorry for your domestic tensions, but on the plus side, if you’re heading out, then you’re not chained to the bedpost.

Knew what the link was from the lyrics. Horribly horribly dated, but I still like it and pretty much all of the classic lineup until they fractured after Promised Land. So unfortunate. So I guess the answer is no, it couldn’t be released today. 😉

Smokey AF today. Started off with fog and visibility was down to nothing. Yet morons still can’t be arsed to turn on their lights. But they can see everyone else (who do have their lights on) so why would they need to? HEPA filters are completely sold out at the stores.

I still can’t believe The Young Turks can get away with that name.

  24. The Late P Brooks

I was outside, doing a little tinkering on the Suburban preparatory to putting the carb back on (again). i think I have that goofy choke linkage where it needs to be, this time. I decided to do an “option delete” on a manifold heat riser vacuum diaphragm; I think it’s supposed to operate the door on the air cleaner for cold starts. It was in the way, serving no useful purpose. Pull it off, make a little cover plate, red silicone it on. No big deal, except I walked into the middle of a big hatch of little tiny flying ants. I had to stop, they were all over me. Very annoying, they are. Some of them followed me inside. I’ll finish up tomorrow. Time to go have a beer at some friends’ house.

    • Tundra

Every Quadrajet needs the well plugs epoxied. Every one. It might run OK and it might seem fine, but fuel is seeping, unmetered from the well plugs until epoxy is covering them.

  25. blackjack

In the dead thread, here’s mention of the police hiding their identities to shield them from antifa attacks. I heartily oppose this. The cops NEED to be visible and identify themselves. What is the difference going to be? Are they going to hide behind masks like the lowlifes? Fuck no. If you’re a cop, your name and face should be public record. As well as your actual duty record. If you can hide like the criminals, you aren’t a good guy. We should have a running update on what you might be disciplined for. We pay you. We aren’t looking for more shady grifters hiding in the shadows. Wives and children, yes, but cops themselves? Hell no. You serve the public, do it publicly. Everybody should know sargeant Friday’s name.

    • Nephilium

Right there with you. In the woke HBO Watchman series, that was a point of contention, as the cops had won the right to wear masks. It made them a lot less trusted among the populace.

There’s also a part of me that thinks that the only way to get rid of the bad laws is to enforce them strictly on everyone. One of the local suburbs did that back in the day when a city imposed a curfew for teenagers. The first person they pulled in for it was the mayor’s daughter on her way home from work (there were no exemptions in the law).

      • Nephilium

If only she had been prosecuted. The Mayor pardoned her the next morning. Then there’s all the people who have gotten caught and allowed to walk on rioting and violence charges.

I’m aware it’s not a popular opinion, but I’m of the opinion that the best way to get rid of bad laws is to enforce them strictly against everyone. Otherwise most people don’t worry about the bad laws since they’ll only be used against “bad people”.

    • Rhywun

Agreed. This is not an encouraging development.

    • Count Potato

The root cause is that these antifa goons aren’t being prosecuted.

      • Mojeaux

The root cause is qualified immunity and antifa cop goons not being prosecuted.

      • Hyperion

So, you agree we need police reform, but you think i’t OK to let antifa goons destroying property and putting a lot of people’s lives in danger, to just walk free because of why?

I hope you’re going to correct me on that assumption, but that’s how I read it.

      • Mojeaux

        You said “root” cause.

Police brutality came before antifa, BLM, et al. Hell, it came before Black Panthers.

      • peachy rex

“Came before” does not equal “caused”.

      • Mojeaux

No, and I did not say “it’s OK to let antifa goons destroy property and put a lot of people’s lives in danger, to just walk free”.

The putative problem that antifa and BLM are “protesting” is police brutality. (Black Panthers, I don’t really know, that was before my time.) If that is true, then police brutality is the ROOT problem. Would antifa and BLM exist in some other incarnation? Sure, they’re marxists organizations. But even without that, goons gonna goon and find something to goon over.

Hyperion crushed himself on a lemon juicer to squeeze “it’s OK to let antifa goons destroy property and put a lot of people’s lives in danger, to just walk free” out of what I said.

      • Hyperion

Antifa has not a thing to do with police brutality. They’re communist. Just because they’re using this to push their commie agenda has nothing to do with police brutality. They were around way before this.

So, you’re saying that police brutality created Marxism? I have to completely disagree.

      • Mojeaux

So, you’re saying that police brutality created Marxism? I have to completely disagree.

You are working awfully hard to shove words into my mouth.

      • Hyperion

        Not at all. Never mind.

    • Drake

That’s all great until Antifa really does start targeting their families while cops are on duty. Let that shit go on and you’ll quickly have no cops or cops who kill antifa on site (since the DAs aren’t going to prosecute).

      • Stinky Wizzleteats

^This. I’m not a fan of the fuzz at all but Antifa can and will target families if it furthers their cause. I’m somewhat ambivalent about the police but their families don’t deserve it.

      • blackjack

Don’t much matter. If the good guys can’t act the part, they ain’t the good guys. You wanna be a hero in blue? Be a fucking hero in blue.

      • TARDis

Thanks for taking care of that for me. Now if I could just find something else to watch.

      • Nephilium

Have you made it through Babylon 5 yet?

        How about Fringe?

      • TARDis

My mistake, I should have written, “Now if ‘we’ could just find something to watch together.” I think we tried watching B5 back in the day. Mrs. T did not like it, and I was ambivalent. I vaguely remember Fringe, but that was during the years that I watched very little TV except for Hockey and football. I remember watching Supernatural and SW: The Clone Wars with my daughter, and that’s about it.

      • Nephilium

For Fringe I requested the girlfriend watch the pilot episode with me. If she wasn’t interested after that, I would never ask again. Really good hook, and nice build up of the story arc.

For B5, I had to request the first season (skipping some of the non-essential episodes).

I’ve enjoyed Supernatural, as well as most of the Arrowverse on the CW for the past couple of years. Currently the girlfriend and I are working our way through Titans Season 2, and we’ve got the Boys season 2 and the Alienist’s second season on tap.

      • TARDis

We both like The Boys, but she can’t get Letterkenny, and did not care for Cobra Kai. I find her reasoning illogical which is none of the characters are likeable. Yet she’ll watch reruns of Mom, Modern Family, and Family Guy. There is not a single character in those shows I would call likeable, not even the adopted Asian girl or the FG dog.

      • Rhywun

The only show I’ve ever had that reaction to is It’s Always Sunny. I know that’s the joke but geebus.

    • Nephilium

Yes. We just had a lot of trash talk and bitching at the local bar, the audio was turned down.

The last NFLteam to interest me was the 1977ish Steelers. The NFL is full of world-class whatevertheyares: the physiciality is unmeasurable and unequaled; it is unspeakably fast and brutal.

But who cares? Team sports is fun because of teams, but these aren’t teams: they’re cynical, well-paid prima-donnas. I checked out when I smelled it going all Terrell Owens. The last guy I could remotely stand was Jason Witten. I’ll drink beer and play poker while it’s on in the background, but there’s no way I’m wasting my Sunday on these punk-ass thugs unless it’s a special on the Ice Bowl or SuperB*wl III.

But I’m going to watch every SEC snap I can fit in. The dance, the urgency, the randomness, the tradition . . . I was born to it. Those guys aren’t enemies; they’re cousins, neighbors. Kids trying to catch a break. I watch MLB spring training for the same reason: your heart is in your throat for these kids.

Entertainment: get me on the edge of my seat; make me care, tug my heartstrings. Don’t insult me; don’t piss me off; don’t NFL me.

The Scottish Hammer has built up some reputation here in Cleveland. The story is he was out with his dad at a Tremont bar when he got the call he was being hired for the Browns last year. He tried to buy the bar a round, and the bar said no, and got him as drunk as they could that night. From what I heard in the before times, he was still a regular at that bar.

    • Hyperion

Glad you enjoyed the good old days. My favorite team was the Raiders with Lyle Alzado, Ten Hendricks, Matuszak, Lester Hayes, all those guys. They got on the field to terrify people, especially QBs. I do remember the steel curtain as well, grew up around plenty of Steeler fans.

I can even remember, as recently as the 90s when ESPN had a post Sunday skit about the best hits of the week. They’d say shit like ‘OMG, that was a de-cleeter’, because some poor wide out would go up for a pass and literally get knocked out of his shoes, lol. Everyone loved that sort of thing.

That’s all over. Pretty soon, you will not be able to even touch a QB or receiver without getting fined and probably banned for the season.

Once the NFL went woke it was over. Pretty soon it will be touch football only, played by pink and green haired xes and xers trying to do their best non-body shaming ballet.

Lodgepole Pines grow at elevations between about 8,500 and 10,000 feet and are the predominant species in the Northern Colorado and Southern Wyoming forests.

Healthy Lodgpole pine forests depend on fire. Moderate fires thin the stand density and create well-spaced park-like forests. These thinned stands allow each tree sufficient access to the nutrients and water they need to thrive and fight off disease, insect infestations and intermittent droughts.

Shade provided by the tree canopy inhibits new growth, but more intense fires will periodically clear the mature trees. The cones, sealed with a dense pitch, open in the high temperature of the fire and release their seeds. The bare mineral soil and fresh ashes produced by a fire provide an excellent seedbed for lodgepole pine seedlings and the lack of tree canopy after the death of the mature trees, allows the seedling the sunlight needed to quickly regenerate the forest.

In areas where fires suppression is required, the lodgepole pine forest grows more dense which increases competition for nutrients and moisture resulting in smaller trees more susceptible to disease and insect infestations. The dense groves also make it easier for disease, insects and wildfires to spread rapidly after the initial outbreak.

Lodgepole pine forests not cleared by fire or harvesting will die off naturally in an estimated 100 years.

In areas where fire suppression is necessary, harvesting tree stands mimics the natural effects of fire in lodgepole pine forests. By removing mature trees, the cones scattered on the forest floor are exposed to sunlight and open to disperse their seeds and begin the regeneration process. Cutting sections of lodgepole pines, while leaving adjoining sections in place, creates a diversity of tree ages, which is essential to maintaining healthy forests.

I was thinking of getting a job at a saw mill in WY. I know what I want, so why not go for it? It would make it easier to look for dino bones on the weekends.

Oh, and for those thinking of sailing around the world, what do you think of hugging the coasts? My route would start in Miami, then through the Caribbean and follow the coast of South America to Recife in Brazil. Now comes the first tricky part – sailing hundreds of miles to Ascension Island and then to St Helena. Then to Swakopmund, and around the Cape of Good Hope up past Madagascar. Do I risk hugging the coast and sailing through the pirate infested waters off Somalia or do I hop from the Comoros, to the Maldives, and then Sri Lanka? Well, either way, I’d follow the coast of India and Burma, stop in Phuket, then through the Straits of Malacca, the Philippines, Okinawa, Japan, Kamchatka peninsula, Attu, then finally follow the coast down to San Francisco.

I like the idea of staying close to land and avoiding canals.

“the coast of South America to Recife in Brazil”

Don’t fall out of your boat in high tide around Recife. Great Whites the size of school buses. People get swallowed whole.

So it’s a mostly safe ocean?

        Ocean, safe, no,

Eh, only 30 fatal attacks since records began.

I’m steering clear of Portugal, though. The orcas have been ramming a lot of boats lately:

Alfonso Gomez-Jordana Martin, a member of a delivery crew boat, said that their boat was brought to a halt by a pod of four orcas.

“Once we were stopped, they came in faster: 10-15 knots, from a distance of 25m,” Martin said. “The impact tipped the boat sideways.

The skipper’s report of the incident said that the force “nearly dislocated the helmsman’s shoulder and spun the whole yacht through 120 degrees.”

Pirates attacked the North Korean cargo ship MV Dai Hong Dan and captured its bridge, while the crew managed to retain control of the steering and engineering spaces. On October 30, the crew regained control of their ship, killing one pirate and capturing six. Three sailors were injured in the fight, and received medical assistance from US Navy Corpman from the Arleigh Burke-class destroyer USS James E. Williams.[29]

Wow, the US Navy helped North Koreans? Did they at least get a thank you note and a fruit basket?

I honestly thought it was Sunday morning (Yes, I know it’s Sunday for most of you, but feel free to say it anyways) and only figured it out when my kid put on her randosel (backpack thingy) and said, “Bye, Bye!” Glad my work starts late today.

        A Dementieva-like serve.

It wasn’t the most exciting match I’ve ever seen, I’ll just leave it at that. My guy won, that’s about it.

      • IRBE

I thought it was pretty exciting..but I was watching on the Spanish ESPN… their announcers are more interesting for me since I dont know any Spanish.

      • Rhywun

The announcers on ESPN are complete shit. McEnroe needs to go yell at clouds somewhere.

I will be happier when the tournaments move back to Tennis Channel.

      • IRBE

4 hrs of play. Great final IMO. Nice to see someone other than the big 3 win for a change.
