Poll: If the Presidential Election Were Held Today 2

by | Sep 15, 2020 | Politics, Poll | 386 comments

Well, many months have passed since I last asked these questions.

Have your answers changed?

**************************************

A) Is there anyone among the current presumed (and actual) nominees for whom you could in good conscience vote?

B) Will you be writing in a candidate of your choice?

C) Will you just be skipping it altogether?

Also, do you think it matters to your daily life one way or the other who is elected? If so, why? If not, why not?

I've got an idea! How about we just stick to the Constitution as written and then the government can leave me the fuck alone.

    Vote for me!!!!

    • PieInTheSky

As a non American I would say if I were

      A) No. I would probably vote for Trump for the sheer entertainment value, but not in good conscience.

      B) I doubt I would do this. not an option in Romania so never tried, but i would rather stay home.

      C) Yes. because i am not a citizen.

Now lemme see how you degens vote.

      • PieInTheSky

Last question no. Cause I am not American. My only benefit may be having Russia not invade my country.

      • UnCivilServant

Are there any elections going on in Romania this year?

      • PieInTheSky

        Yes. Mayors and then Parliament.

      • UnCivilServant

Hrmm… maybe we should pick a random one and weigh in on it.

        But that sounds like work.

  2. Pine_Tree

    1. Yes (Trump)
    2. No (last time I wrote in Ben Sasse)
    3. No

Yes. From a practical standpoint, I’m generally a single-issue guy (guns). I use it as kindof a shibboleth for everything about a candidate. If they have any desire to disarm me, then that tells me all I need to know. Yes, I know the Rs aren’t perfect, but the Donks are utterly hostile to me. So there ya go.

    • R C Dean

      Pretty much where I am.

I would only add that I cancelled my mail-in ballot, and will be voting in person. I don’t trust the Post Office and its union not to fuck up mail-in balloting, especially from Repub-leaning zip codes like my own.

  3. BakedPenguin

I’m voting for the Trumpster. I went with Johnson last time, and that was pointless.

    • The Other Kevin

Me too. For a while it looked like there’d be enough to get the LP into debates, but that bar was set way too high (on purpose).

      • BakedPenguin

I’ve been registered R since 2012 and Ron Paul I was hoping to vote for Rand in 2016, but no such luck.

  4. hayeksplosives

    A) I’m voting for Donald Trump. I’m in CA so it won’t make a difference, but if I disliked the Democrat party before, I now hate them because they want to destroy America as we know it.

If Biden wins, the Dems and socialists in Dem clothing will burrow further into the entrenched bureaucracy and bring politics even to offices that are supposed to be non-political.

If Biden wins and gets to appoint a liberal Justice, that will probably be neutral since it would be RBG’s. But if the next Dem gets to name a replacement for a “conservative” , it will have bad implications for free speech, 2nd amendments etc.

If we let the Dem party win, we are rewarding them for aligning with thugs and antisemites and anyone who wants equality even if it means destruction, because then nobody would have more than anybody else.

I do believe the stakes are higher than at any presidential election of my lifetime.

    • RBS

I do believe the stakes are higher than at any presidential election of my lifetime.

LOL, that’s every election of everyone’s lifetime.

      • R C Dean

        That’s said of every election.

Its going to be true of one of them.

Is this the one? Given the radicalization of the Dems, it could be. The only counter is that the Repubs have shown no change, that I am aware of, from being barely better than useless.

Keeping a party that has been overtly captured by the radical left out of power is pretty effing important. This importance is diminished by the alternative being weak/stupid, with minimal commitment to any principles that matter to me.

  5. Not Adahn

    A) No
    B) Yes. I haven’t decided if it’s going to be Kanye, Banginglc1 or Semi-Bright Border Collie, but those are my top three
    c) No.

Bonus) Unfortunately, it’s going to matter in my life because it will determine the exact form in which it’s going to get worse: either Cuomo gets bailed out which will send him on to heretofore-undreamed levels of prolifigacy, or he doesn’t get bailed out which will lead to a Washington Monument Strategy/temper tantrum of cataclysmic proportions.

    • banginglc1

BLC1 current platform addition: I don’t plan on doing anything!

      • banginglc1

I actually forget I’m running most of the time.

      • UnCivilServant

You vetoed your own campaign, you’re not actually running.

      • Rhywun

        You and Joe.

    • R C Dean

Failed Dem state and local governments getting bailed out affects me a lot more than failed Dem state and local governments throwing temper tantrums.

    • The Hyperbole

Semi Bright Border Collie may be convinced to carve out special tax exemptions for astrologers.

    • Ted S.

With apologies to UCS, I’m to the point that I want to see StateGov employees starving and living under bridges after the state goes bankrupt.

  6. The Other Kevin

    1. Yes. Jo or Trump, but I will vote for Trump because I don’t think we can afford for it to be even close.
    2. No.
    3. No.

If Biden wins, I think the insane left will see this as confirmation that people like their ideas. I’d expect an explosion of censorship and wokeness that would definitely affect my daily life. I’d also expect a big push toward socialized medicine, which again would affect me.

    • R C Dean

Don’t forget gun control. following the (successful, to them) VA model.

Semi-confident prediction: if the Dems get teh Senate, they will do away with the filibuster. Its the only way they can pass their radical wish list, and they will pass it By Any Means Necessary.

      • SDF-7

You Are Not Alone in your prediction.

  7. Roland of Gilead

    A). Trump
    B). No
    C). No

I got a call from a political survey last night with an actual person so I stayed on and answered all the questions. With 100 meaning strongly approve and 0 meaning strongly disapprove I answered 100 for anything related to Trump or John James and 0 for anything related to Biden or Gary Peters. I did answer 0 for cocaine Mitch and gave Republicans in congress a 1 and Democrats in congress a 0.

I think it was a survey from the Peters campaign but I couldn’t tell for sure.

  8. UnCivilServant

    A) I’d have to find my conscience to ask it

    B) No.

    C) Hell no. While my one vote will not be enough to counteract the fraud machine, I’m going to at least do my part to make them work for it.

  9. Idle Hands

I’m either voting for Trump(75%) or not voting because it’s disgusting it’s come to this and I don’t want to endorse anyone associated with the disgusting excesses of the state.

    • Idle Hands

also I’m literally voting against every other incumbent no matter the party. The choades need to be thrown out on their ass and join us in the unemployment lines.

      • CPRM

That’s how I voted last time, and didn’t vote in single candidate races (I never do), also, because I have principals principles I don’t vote on any race I haven’t looked into.

      • OBJ FRANKELSON

I will vote for single canidates if they have a nickname on the ballot. Provided the nickname strikes me as amusing.

  10. Urthona

I will vote for Trump but not in good conscience. I’m trying to fuck with the political ruling class here and my intentions are not pure.

    • Bobarian LMD

This is why I voted for Trump last time, and will likely repeat.

  11. Mojeaux

I don’t even know how to answer these questions. Last time around I was a #nevertrumper for a whole lot of reasons that had nothing to do with politics and “Don’t look at me; I voted for the pothead” was my standard retort to being challenged. My mother was in agony, on her knees praying to know whom to vote for and held her nose and pulled the lever for Trump, even though she never did get an answer.

This time… I don’t know. I just don’t know. I don’t WANT to actively vote for Trump. I WON’T vote for Biden. The pothead wants me to bake the cake. There is no Jill Stein.

This is what I’m going on at the moment: No new wars. Peace brokered in the ME. Troops being brought home.

What scares me, and which is probably what’s going to get me to vote for Cheeto Jesus is that I CAN’T SAY THAT anywhere because then I’ll be a Trumptard, attacked, and ostracized, and I really don’t want that. It’s not me as an author. It’s me as a person with people I love who are completely unhinged.

Not even “No new wars, peace brokered in the ME, and troops being brought home” is safe to say.

So. I’ve been silenced by people who think they know better than I and I’m just a rube, and Biden is whom they want in office. I really really really don’t want to be ruled by these people.

    • Urthona

I kinda feel the same way and wonder whether I’m a coward or not for not publicly pushing back. But really don’t feel like dealing with it.

      • Apples and Knives

I feel the same. I’ve played and recorded music my whole adult life, and while I’m not what anyone would consider successful, I do have a great time playing out with the very small local following I have. That would be gone overnight if there was any kind of hint that I wasn’t woke as fuck.
On top of that, people in my own family who I love, have basically laid out that anyone who disagrees with mainstream progressive thought in any way is out of their lives for good.
And you know, I could probably live with that. It’s the thought of losing what I love to do as a hobby that really keeps my cowardly mouth shut. So, basically, the opposite of what Mojeaux said. 🙂

      • Mojeaux

So, basically, the opposite of what Mojeaux said

I’m not saying my authorial persona isn’t a factor. It is, but I’ve been at this thing for 12 years and I’m only now getting a few more followers than I had, so… “Well, you all don’t buy my books anyway, so what do I care?”

And, weirdly enough, through all of this, most of my fan base has been lefties.

I’m not brave enough to go to bat for a guy I a) don’t care for much and b) will get me ostracized and hate-read/downvoted to oblivion.

    • CPRM

The pothead wants me to bake the cake.

He isn’t running, but I believe that is still the party line. I held my nose and voted for him to try and help reach the threshold for future LP candidates to get automatic ballot access, but they party has gotten even worse since then.

      • Mojeaux

Where “pothead” = any generic Libertarian candidate.

    • Toxteth O'Grady

Just tell people (if they ask) that you left the presidential race blank, whether you do or not.

    • The Other Kevin

I almost always avoid political discussions on FB. But I’ve decided that if Trump wins, I’m going to post a rant that I’ve been working on. It basically says that supporting rioting, defunding police, and gun control is a losing platform, and if the Democratic party ever wants to win again they’ll have to stop listening to the crazies on Twitter and get back to representing the working class (even though that was, and will always be, lip service).

      • UnCivilServant

Their ‘help’ is destructive to the working class. I’d rather they stayed with the mask off and be shunned.

    • UnCivilServant

Even as a shut-in insulated from the opinions of others, I don’t tell people who I voted for.

      • Not Adahn

I posted a ballot selfie last election with GayJay marked. My Trump-hating ladyfriend had a meltdown I hadn’t seen before.

      • Urthona

I did. I still joke with my family that GayJay hasn’t officially conceded the last election yet.

      • RBS

I’ve found that voting for a third party pisses off the Progs in my family more than my step-dad being a huge Trump guy.

      • Mojeaux

Yeah, on FB I saw the Hersters screaming about people who voted third party were worse than anybody who voted for Trump. I gave one person solid evidence why Herself and Cheeto Jesus were equally evil and she went on a passive-aggressive rant (spoke in generalities and didn’t tag me) that Herself was obviously NOT evil.

Fuck that. If you can’t see it, you’re not rational.

      • Certified Public Asshat

        She was on Ellen though!

        And now everyone hates Ellen.

      • Urthona

I think it does too and I think part of it is that you have actual moral superiority on them. You’re actually against war and the war on drugs…. for real.

    • db

This is about where I am.

    • R C Dean

So vote for who you want and don’t tell anybody?

  12. CPRM

Kanye 2020, because if I’m gonna vote for crazy I’m turning it up to 11. I may have write him in, depending on if his case goes to the Wisconsin Supreme Court and how that turns out.

    • Urthona

Go ahead!! Throw your vote away!!

      • CPRM

At least I’ll get to call everyone else racist for the next 4 years.

      • Urthona

I was trying to make a Simpsons reference but man… at this point I’m just thinking of becoming openly racist. how refreshing would it be?

        “You’re racist”

        “yup. talk to ya later”

      • Mojeaux

They’re making racists out of people who weren’t.

      • Florida Man

I try to avoid being a tribalist, but damn if the world isn’t trying to force me to chose the form of my destructor.

      • Not Adahn

Biden is for common sense board with a nail in it control!

      • Bobarian LMD

Nobody needs a pool chain with more than 10 links!

      • db

It’s just unconscionable that he was just able to go and get a length of chain without a waiting period to cool down.

      • Not Adahn

In America, it’s easier to get a pool chain than a book.

    • Stinky Wizzleteats

At least Kanye’s self made and seems to mean well.

    • Count Potato

Thanks, I saw that. It will be good to see him back.

    • db

That’s good news, in a way. It’s a shame that his whole situation had to be shaken up so much in the first place, though.

  13. SUPREME OVERLORD trshmnstr

    A) Is there anyone among the current presumed (and actual) nominees for whom you could in good conscience vote?

Any vote I potentially make this year will be purely defensive. Jo isnt worth the protest vote. Kanye is only worth it if he Perot’s the election.

I hold a viable candidate to a lower standard than a protest candidate, and for months (years, really) I’ve been vacillating between being confident in staying home and being somewhat tempted to vote Trump. I still don’t have a resolution to that tension, because for every stupid thing Trump does, the left goes even further full authoritarian, and Trump has actually done some positive things here and there. I’d vote for Kanye if I thought he could spoil Biden’s chances without forcing me to vote for Trump.

    B) Will you be writing in a candidate of your choice?

    no. I’d rather stay home.

    C) Will you just be skipping it altogether?

Still TBD. Im still leaning in this direction, but my urge to punish the left is growing by the day.

  14. robc

Still planning to vote for Jo.

I cannot in good conscience vote for Biden (duh) or the USFL-killer. It doens’t leave a lot of options.

  15. Raven Nation

A b c are all on the table right now.

    If a, then Jo

    If b, Almanian

c probably won’t come into play because of some local issues but it might

    • Raven Nation

Caveat: if trump pardons Snowden then MAYBE trump

      • juris imprudent

Apparently he has ruled that out, too many rubes for national security in his base.

      • Raven Nation

Well, that narrows the choice to pointless protest vote or apathy.

  16. Tundra

    Trump.

The fact that War, Inc. hates him so much tells me a lot. Biden/Harris is a return to the same bullshit.

Like Mo said, no new wars, drawdowns, justice reform. All with the opposition throwing everything at him they could fucking think of. I’d like to see what another term would bring. Maybe nothing, but I know where we are headed if the dems prevail.

Besides, the lefty fucks shut down and then burned down my city. Fuck them all.

Ultimately we need to break up. I’m just not ready yet.

    • Urthona

I still contend the only feasible path forward for libertarians is to massage the Republican party in a libertarian direction. Only 2 parties are possible here. And yeah that will mostly fail but it will fail less.

      • Florida Man

The only problem with that plan is there are about 1 million libertarians and 40 million republicans. I’m not sure how much influence we can bring.

      • Tundra

The party system isn’t the problem. The problem is Leviathan.

Like I said, the only real solution is to dissolve and start over in smaller groups.

      • juris imprudent

EVERY political system will end up with two parties (or coalitions): the one in power and the one out. As long as you want representative govt that is how it will be, the rest is just fuzz around the edges.

    • KibbledKristen

The fact that War, Inc. hates him so much tells me a lot

Agreed. Hopefully if he wins a 2nd term, he can just bulldoze right over them. And I love to see him run Bolton out of DC on a rail. That guy has overstayed his welcome.

      • juris imprudent

Remember, he embraced Bolton as a fuck you to Democrats, et al that hated Bolton – even though there was plenty of good reason to hate Bolton.

Trump doesn’t bulldoze anyone, least of all the bureaucracy he nominally controls.

  17. Sean

My answers remain the same, but my enthusiasm is off the charts.

Make no mistake, the Democrats are currently waging war against the American people. They are openly hostile to our way of life and are seeking to cow us into submission. They are harboring and giving aid to domestic terrorists. There’s not a fucking chance in hell I will ever vote for a Democrat.

    TRUMP! TRUMP! TRUMP!

I will crawl over broken glass to vote for that jabroni.

    • Hyperion

      Sean, officially declared deplorable trumpet.

      • Sean

        I didn’t think it was a secret.

      • Rebel Scum

I knew Sean was on the Trump-Train with me. It seems some others are coming around.

  18. robc

Apparently many of you don’t value the USFL as much as I do.

And it isn’t so much about the USFL as it is a perfect window into his soul (such as there is).

Can I vote for John F. Bassett, even though he is Canadian and dead?

    • Florida Man

I’ve made my hatred for professional sports well known.

  19. Count Potato

    A) Trump
    B) Yes, SPACE HAT for Congress
    C) Possibly

  20. RBS

    Maybe Jo but likely C.

  21. Roland of Gilead

Every other day Trump does or says something I disagree with or find offensive. But I do believe Trump loves America and what it has stood for. I believe Biden only loves being in power. Being in a swing state I have no qualms in voting Trump

    • Roland of Gilead

Also wtf are qualms? And do I really not have any?

      • PieInTheSky

        You should check the icebox

      • Not Adahn

Don’t listen to Pie, he like his qualms unripened.

      • Pope Jimbo

I think qualms are that weird weather you get just before a big storm.

  22. Chipwooder

No, there’s no one I actually want to vote for. I voted Gary Johnson in 2016 despite the repugnant presence of William Weld and Johnson’s own dopiness. Jo Jorgenson has been spouting BLM bullshit, so she’s out. I probably won’t vote. It will depend on how spiteful I’m feeling on election day.

    • Tundra

      Spite.

That’s a good way of putting it. I am so fucking tired of being lectured to, I just want to throw a metaphorical hand grenade to watch what happens.

  23. Ozymandias

    A) In good conscience? Not really, but politics isn’t about conscience, so I’m going to ignore that part of the question. I will be voting Team Red for the first time in a Presidential election.
    B) I should give a write-in more thought, but this time it really does feel like we’re on the precipice of something monumentally bad and Trump is unquestionably the lesser of two weevils. Given how his enemies (including in his own party and among the judiciary) view him, he is unlikely to be able to do *anything* seriously harmful.
    C) I’ve thought about ignoring it altogether, but it doesn’t seem like the people running for office will simply leave me alone if I ignore them. So, I’m going to vote, even if it’s unlikely to impact the whole thing.

I saw TH’s comment (semi-rant) about people defending Trump here. I have to say that it seems like people have this visceral hatred of the guy that I just don’t get. And as I’ve noted elsewhere, I was born and raised to hate New Yorkers and given ample reason to have that really solidified for me; DJT is like the Uber-New Yorker – and yet I find myself in absolute sympathy for the guy. No ONE, and I mean NO ONE, has ever been the subject to the kind of concerted smear and public calumny that guy has. Not even Lee Harvey Oswald (who had it coming).
And the lurch to the Left by the democratic party into essentially a full-blown criminal enterprise while being cheered and covered for by the Media is something I just can’t get my head around. So, yeah, color me like the “silent majority” in ’68 who put Nixon in office.

If it makes TH feel better, he should consider what I wrote in (b). Trump is so hated, by so many in government, notwithstanding whatever EOs TH thinks are “beyond the pale,” there’s almost nothing the guy can do that won’t be neutered, watered down, declared legally inoperative by courts, or flat out ignored or countermanded by unelected bureaucrats. That seems to me to make him the safest possible executive in my lifetime.

    • Roland of Gilead

Agree with the treatment of Trump but he seems to thrive on that. The treatment of Melania is what torques me off.

    • Chipwooder

I do agree regarding the surreal level of hatred he inspires. It’s so ludicrously over the top, and I don’t mean the commie loons screaming in the streets or the Salon editorial staff. I mean the supposedly respectable, moderate members of the press.

    • Mojeaux

I saw TH’s comment (semi-rant) about people defending Trump here.

Yeah, it made me stop and think.

      • Ozymandias

Yeah, it made me stop and think.

Care to elaborate, Moj? (and “No” is perfectly acceptable).

And allow me instead to wax philosophical about some of the more public exclamations about Glibs going/being “Trumptards.”
        (1) In every instance I’ve seen that claim made here, I’ve never seen it followed up with citations to all of the supposed Trumptards. It is spoken with a certainty like Khaleesi’s handmaid: “It is KNOWN.”
        (2) One of the more obvious manifestations of TDS seems to be an inability to differentiate between (a) opposition to Team Blue and its weaponization of the FBI/NSA/CIA against a rival political candidate (or massive voter fraud, or treatment of an entire class of Americans as untermensch, or fill in the blank) and (b) actual support for Trump.

I find that there’s very little “support” for a guy like Trump, but as someone else noted above, the guy does genuinely appear to love this country – as I and many, many other people who have any sense of history, also do because of the legacy of freedom that we were bequeathed (at least what’s left of it). And right now, history has thrown us into this moment where DJT – who by any objective policy metric would be a Clinton Democrat of the 90s, is now cast as hero and villain and stands in the way of what looks like democratic supremacy where they never lose an election again.

So yeah, I’ll back Trump, regardless of what stupid shit he might do today, tomorrow, or for the next 4 should he win. The alternatives really are that horrible. And if any thinks that’s hyperbole (but not THE Hypberole), I would say please go to Portland for a month or two and then tell me what you think.

      • Not Adahn

        (1) In every instance I’ve seen that claim made here, I’ve never seen it followed up with citations to all of the supposed Trumptards. It is spoken with a certainty like Khaleesi’s handmaid: “It is KNOWN.”

I think this post is documenting most Glibs as being Trump voters. Whether or not that is the same thing as a Trumptard undoubtedly depends on the degree of Drumpfenhass one has.

      • robc

Continuing my theme hatred of Trump — Portland, that is where the Breakers used to play?

      • Semi-Spartan Dad

Yep, it made me stop and think too… think of a person on the beach in Indonesia complaining about a rock they stubbed their toe on while the tsunami barrels down.

Sean sums up the position nicely above. I may not be enthusiastic about Trump but it’s on the same scale as the stubbed toe vs. tsunami to think Trump and Harris/the progressive left are comparable evils.

      • Mojeaux

        Care to elaborate, Moj?

Well, firstly, and this is not unique to TH and I don’t mean to thump on him (sorry, TH, I’m trying to say this as gently as I can), but I really don’t like when the a Glib commentator rants with a generalized, “I don’t like that the Glib commentariat do/believe/support X,” with the implication that whichever Glibs are wrong and awful.

But TH has a good point about Trump’s authoritarian streak, and combined with why I dislike Trump (although I have had four years to come around to admitting he’s entertaining–laser pointer and cats), which mostly has to do with stiffing small contractors when he went bankrupt a gazillion times (he was the original too-big-to-fail), I had to think: which side is going to affect my life more with their authoritarianism?

Well, not Trump. Obama’s pen and phone (and whatever he has on SCOTUS) directly affected my life adversely. Trump has directly affected my life to the positive.

I am not a supporter, rabid or otherwise, of Trump. But he’s made my life better and hasn’t prohibited me from doing anything I like.

      • Not Adahn

which mostly has to do with stiffing small contractors

That’s also why I dislike Prince.

      • Florida Man

Shush. He’s dead now. He can’t hurt you anymore.

Prince, like, the musician? I didn’t know that.

I don’t care for his music much even if I can appreciate his talent, so I didn’t follow him.

      • Not Adahn

Yeah, he’d have stuff commissioned (like the guitar made in the shape of his unpronounceable symbol) and not pay the invoices.

      • l0b0t

The Artist Formerly Known As Prince was a brilliant songwriter whose work I almost universally prefer to be performed by others (with the notable exception of 1999 because… C’mon!). IIRC, Dwight heard the news of Prince’s passing while in the middle of the laying down tracks for this album, he got up, went off to a corner and scribbled out this arrangement. – https://youtu.be/1P2HSPaF3cI

I am not really a fan of Prince’s hit records, but this is some serious rock star shit right here!

U.S. District Judge William Stickman IV, who was appointed by President Donald Trump, sided with plaintiffs that included hair salons, drive-in movie theaters, a farmer’s market vendor, a horse trainer and several Republican officeholders in their lawsuit against Wolf, a Democrat, and his health secretary.

    Emphasis added. Yes, it matters.

    • Stinky Wizzleteats

Probably the most important thing when it all comes down to it.

  26. Chipwooder

There’s not a fucking chance in hell I will ever vote for a Democrat.

Nope, particularly as the Dems keep turning more and more pinko. Or, more accurately, letting the mask slip more and more to reveal their true pinko nature.

  27. KibbledKristen

I work in the Executive Branch and the President has no effect on my daily life.

Since Virginia has turned blue, my vote doesn’t really matter. But I’m mulling a Trump vote for a) spite and b) Middle East potential peace (not gonna count those chickens til they hatch).

If I chicken out on my spite-vote, I’ll go Jorgensen

    • Hyperion

Like hayek said upthread, and you just said, my vote for POTUS, also will not count, because I’m in MD, another land of the BORG people. It’s a protest vote against Marxism more than anything. But if I was in a red state, I’d still be voting for Trump.

    • Rebel Scum

Since Virginia has turned blue, my vote doesn’t really matter.

I think VA could be in play.

      • Chipwooder

I think it will be much closer than the punditry expects but will still go Dem. NoVa is too big.

      • KibbledKristen

NoVA & Charlottesville have ruined this state commonwealth

      • Chipwooder

Well, I mean, Cville’s not that big, but it certainly has gone from a liberal-leaning college town to Berkeley of the Blue Ridge in the 20 years since I left. I don’t even like going there anymore.

Seriously though, Trump’s winning the popular vote and the EC will spring some sweet proggy tears.

Philadelphia had seen a more than 30% increase in year-to-date homicides as of Monday, with 319 compared with 244 to the same point last year.

McSwain, a Trump appointee, and Krasner, a Democrat elected in 2017 on promises to reform the criminal justice system, have crossed swords before.

  31. creech

Will follow my conscience and vote for the candidate who most closely matches it: Jo. I guess I don’t follow the opposition to her re her saying libertarians need to be anti-racist. some libertarians think following NAP is enough – you can spout racism, anti-semitism, hateful anti-religious slogans, and exhibit whatever gross personal habits as long as you don’t aggress against others. Other libertarians, particularly those who were or are students of objectivism, believe in a civil society and rational behavior, are judgmental, but tolerate those who are different or religous, and view racism or sexism as collectivist behavior.

    • Scruffy Nerfherder

Anti-racism as currently espoused negates treating people as individuals first, but instead as members of a collective.

      It also assigns collective guilt.

    • Fatty Bolger

The problem is what anti-racism has come to represent. Anti-racism like segregation? Ancestral sin?

    • SUPREME OVERLORD trshmnstr

Jo suffers from the traditional lefty-tarian foible of accepting the progressive, authoritarian, post-modern premise and quibbling about the details of implementation.

No… postmodern progressivism is evil in premise and in implementation. I dont give a shit if you have a less authoritarian way of combating climate change. I don’t give a shit if you have an optional way of tackling the patriarchy and white supremacy. You already lost the moment you ceded the premise.

    • Rhywun

She explicitly said she supports the BLM organization.

Also, “anti-racism” is Marxist gibberish now. And a perversion of the English language. Sort of like “anti-hate” – which now means throwing you in jail for thought crimes.

      No thanks.

      • R C Dean

What trshy and Rhywun said. I held my nose and voted for the pothead and the turncoat last time.

I’m not voting for the useful idiot this time.

      • blackjack

I’m in this camp. After actually having to hold my nose while voting for a libertarian last time, they’d have had to make it a no brainer for me to vote for them again. They made it a no brainer, just in the opposite direction. I’m voting orange, which is still not really red or blue, I guess.

  32. Mojeaux

Regarding the “Trump 2020 because fuck you again” sign:

Michael Moore told the left last time that they were going to get Trump elected, and he was summarily unpersoned.

I thought for sure that if Trump won, the left would reconsider their tactics and have some level of self-awareness and self-reflection. Nope.

I do not, for one second, believe that if Trump wins (even a landslide) that they will consider the idea that THEY DROVE PEOPLE TO IT.

    • Chipwooder

I’m kind of amazed they’ve been able to keep the spittle-flecked lunacy up for four years. I thought it would die down to more of a simmer after a couple of years.

      • Tundra

I thought we’d be back to business around Memorial Day.

The powerful do not like being challenged, apparently.

      • Nephilium

They also don’t want to let go of the power they grabbed.

      • Apples and Knives

“I thought we’d be back to business around Memorial Day.”

Me too. I think I’m done making predictions for the rest of my life.

      • Florida Man

Me too. I think I’m done making predictions for the rest of my life.-

        That’s a bold prediction…

      • RBS

I thought so too, but then the most unhinged people I know are all democrats.

      • Pope Jimbo

I have an aunt and uncle who are traditional blue collar, union, Democrats and they were rabidly anti-trump after the election. After about six months they had both simmered down considerably.

Now they still don’t like Trump and will call out anyone who says nice things about him, but they are despondent about Biden being their party’s pick. They know he is senile. However, they were even more despondent about their other choices during the primaries. They couldn’t believe that there was no traditional Democrat running.

      • R C Dean

So, sounds like two votes for Biden.

    • Hyperion

They won’t. What they will do, exactly, is to go further left. That is the reason they will decide they lost, again, because they did not go far enough left.

    • robc

The craziest thing is that if they would CTFD, they would realize that Trump would give the left almost everything they want, in small doses, as long as they were willing to let him take the credit for it.

      • robc

And that is another reason I can’t vote for him. Right now, it is only Rand Paul that seems to have figured this out, but eventually the left might.

      • R C Dean

I think Trump is the kind who holds grudges. If so, there will be no deals with the left. Not now. That window closed.

If he’s the kind who holds grudges.

      • Pope Jimbo

This was my biggest fear too.

If the Democrats had gone to Trump and told him that he would be remembered as the greatest president in history if he became a gun grabber, he would have done it. If I remember correctly, I think Trump wavered after the Vegas shooting and only stopped when his base went bugshit.

Didn’t he pretty much give the Democrats everything they wanted in his first budget too?

      • Drake

He makes deals. They could have gotten all kinds of deals on taxes, spending, foreign policy, etc. if they had played nice. Instead it was fabricated investigations, impeachment, and riots for 4 years.

      • R C Dean

And the left has gotten themself to a place where they simply cannot compromise with Trump. And Trump is a negotiator, who needs some wins in the horse trading. The left reflexively opposes every single thing he says or does, even innocuous shit like HCL and plasma treatments.

I just don’t see deals with the left as much of a risk.

      • Drake

I agree – just pointing out there stupidity. And your are right, he does hold grudges.

More locally, I’m voting for the democrat for governor. The Libertarian is currently polling at almost 25%. But I want Gov Holcomb (R) gone. He governs like an authoritarian democrat. We have a republican super majority in out congress here, but they won’t hold him accountable because of the R next to his name. I’m hoping the the democrat wins, they might actually oppose something for once and quit passing so many awful laws and letting the governor run away with his tyranny.

    • The Other Kevin

Thanks for posting this. I have no idea who the Dem candidate is, but I just might vote L in this one. I thought Holcomb did an ok job back in March when nobody knew what was going on, but since then he’s just gone along with all the governors in surrounding states.

  34. Fatty Bolger

A: Jo or Trump, but I’ll vote Trump because I’m in a swing state.
    B: No
C: I will definitely vote, in person

Bonus question: Daily life in the near future, probably not. Down the road, sure.

  35. Florida Man

    A) no, but I’m voting for Trump because I won’t cave to terrorist.

    B) no, because that’s even more a waste of time than voting for the Joke the Libertarian party has become.

    C) I was very close to un-registering to vote until a house in my area was vandalized for having a Trump flag. Now I’m motivated to vote against democrats, were before I was merely wallowing in nihilism.

  36. Hyperion

Like someone said, somewhere, I can’t remember now, you only get to vote for Marxism once.

You know all that unhinged blathering about Trump refusing to leave office if he wins? That’s projection.

Marxism ALWAYS results in a dictator. And our own left, who now fully control the democratic party, are way further left than Xi and the CCP, just as authoritarian and leaving the worst part for last, they are batshit crazy.

  40. DOOMco

Trump. Unenthusiastic? Eh. Part of it is definitely the fuck you. Part of it is the enemy of (basically all) my enemies. And part of it is the fact he hasn’t blown us into ww3. I don’t blame the current economy on him, and certainly think he’s in a better position to help that. (tons of sld about economic policies here)

I’m also in a position where I’ve told the LP they ruined any chance of me voting for them. Sarwark should have a lifetime ban from the party. I’m 85% sure the LP is a controlled op. They either need to die or get their house in order.

    • Florida Man

I think failure is baked in to libertarianism. What am I going to do? Quit my lucrative job to campaign full time on the promise to shrink government so that I can not get rich on bribes or stroke my ego with power? Power hunger people are relentless because there is a big payoff at the end. Add in diffuse cost with concentrated benefits and you see why the ratchet only goes one way.

      • DOOMco

It’s true. There’s no good reason for a sane person to run for office.

I wish the LP would just have better speakers of libertarianism for the potus, and have their job be promoting some local elections that they actually think they stand a chance in. Instead you had sarwark being a trash human online, and then when he left the LP twitter somehow got worse. They literally could not make a worse decision at any chance. The only way for me to make sense of it is that they arent real. It’s an op. It has to be.

  41. CatchTheCarp

Didn’t vote for Trump last election (GayJay) but this election he will be getting my vote this election. In the past I’ve often voted for what I felt like the best candidate in State/Local elections, regardless of party affiliation but no longer. I would find it difficult to ever cast a vote Team Blue’s way again.

    • PieInTheSky

  42. juris imprudent

Mostly likely C; possibly B – with a random name; no chance for A, and I honestly would’ve voted for Trump if the SOB had actually gotten us out of even just one country in the ME that we shouldn’t be in. He said he would and he did not – promising to get to that after the election, uh-uh.

    • DOOMco

      • DOOMco

Yeah I’m not trying to say he has no blame.
I am rather relieved that we aren’t going into another 3 countries.
Sad that that’s the bar right now.

      • CPRM

He tried to leave Syria and got censured (I think by congress) so then he said ‘Ok, we’ll defeat ISIS, then leave.’ We have seemed to do that first part, but not the second. He also tried to leave Afghanistan and the congress complained, so he was set to have peace talks at Camp David, and more complaints, then I think the Taliban attacked some troops before anything could happen.

    B. I can’t, in good conscience, vote for any federal candidate on the MT ballot.

Perhaps some locals. And I’ll vote for legal weed, despite the proposed regulation and 20% tax.

But this is interesting…there are two constitutional weed initiatives on the ballot, 190 and 118. 190 is the legalization/regulation/tax. It’s billed as “adult use initiative”. The Montana constitution defines an adult as anyone over 18. What 118 does is grants the legislature an exception to limit the sale of weed to 21 and over. In my perfect world 190 passes and 118 doesn’t. I look forward to the wailing and gnashing of teeth should my preferred outcome come to fruition.

  50. Pope Jimbo

    1) Probably going to hate vote for Trump. Mostly as a thumb in the eye of the professional govt types.
    2) If I write anyone in it will be Tundra.
    3) I usually leave a lot of blanks in my ballot. My normal operating procedure is to vote only for people I can support. This year, though, I will be voting against all Democrats that they allow me to. The Dem party needs to have a reset. They need to lose badly at all levels. The problem is that the GOP if swept in on a landslide won’t do anything. They will let the remaining Dems dictate favorable rules “in the spirit of unity and bipartisanship”.

    • Tundra

    • Mad Scientist

The problem is that the GOP if swept in on a landslide won’t do anything.

The GOP is the abusive husband who lies to you about how he’s changed, baby, and this time, he swears, he’ll do the right thing. Voting for them is just allowing the abuser back in the house because you really want to believe they really have changed, and you’ll tell your mom and sister as much, while the GOP slurps beer on your couch at 10 am instead of looking for a job. For the most part, they are not interested in rolling back taxes, cutting bloat, draining the swamp, defending your rights, or any other thing they repeatedly promise to do. A landslide GOP victory will mean they spend more time banging the neighbor, and you spend more time wearing big sunglasses to hide your most recent black eye.

I’m voting for the R candidate for US house in my district. I’m not sure if a R candidate has ever served for the US house from this district. If they have, must have been pre-civil war at least, maybe in the Jurassic Period, more likely.

Anyway, she seems to be very popular. She has about as much chance or winning as I do of becoming World Emperor.

I’m just voting straight R this time, because I hate all democrats now, fucking commies.

One time my vote did count here, I was almost shocked, because we got a wishy washy east coast R gov, who has now won twice. You never know, these times they are a changin.

Well, as I’m a Canuck and don’t have a (direct) dog in your U.S. fight, I’ll try to answer in a Canadian-context-appropriate fashion:

“I’m gonna vote for Justin Trudeau again because he’s so hot and dreamy” — pretty much every female I know who’s voting Liberal (should we have an election after a non-confidence vote in late September/early October when Parliament resumes and the Libs bring in their insane multi-hundred-billion-dollar “woketard/social justice” budget).

In the past, I have actually used a variation of the following reply to the “hot and dreamy” sentiment: “You do understand that, no matter how many times you vote for him, 25-year-old J.T.’s never going to come to your house, sweep you off your feet and then wildly fuck your brains out in session after session of hot, steamy sex, don’t you?”

I just can’t understand why I’m less popular than I used to be amongst my peers. Particularly the females. Must be my hygiene. But enough about me.

Troopers from the Jonestown patrol and crime units responded to the area for multiple reports of stolen political signs, damaged “President Trump” signs and vandalism, including red spray paint on property. Stickers were also placed on homes.

Investigators obtained search warrants for Shandfelder’s home and vehicle. He was taken into custody and taken to the state police station for an interview during which he admitted to committing the damage and thefts.

Shandfelder was charged with a felony count of criminal mischief, eight counts each of theft by unlawful taking and various other charges including trespassing and loitering and prowling at nighttime.

He was committed to Lebanon County Prison in lieu of $50,000 bail following his arraignment before District Judge Anthony Verna.

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) — The 17-year-old boy killed and another man hurt Monday in a north Minneapolis shooting were members of a Republican congressional candidate’s campaign.

The Lacy Johnson campaign says the two victims were members of the outreach team and were not performing campaign duties when the shooting occurred Monday afternoon at the intersection of North Fremont and Dowling avenues.

According to the Lacy Johnson campaign and Minneapolis police, the shooting is not believed to be a politically motivated attack.

Minneapolis police say a group of people were standing outside of a Super USA convenience store when one or more shooters opened fire. The teenager and the man were hit, and emergency crews brought them to Hennepin Healthcare for treatment. The teenager was pronounced dead shortly thereafter.

Investigators are still searching for the shooters, who fled the scene on foot. The man who survived was listed in serious but stable condition.

Johnson, the Republican candidate, is running to unseat Rep. Ilhan Omar in Minnesota’s 5th District, which encompasses Minneapolis and some surrounding suburbs.

Still very early in this story. Sounds like it might just have been normal George Floyd mostly peaceful intersection. Still even if they proved it was a Omar supporter who shot them, would it affect her chances of winning?

They have been overtly progressive since the late 90’s. I was a subscriber from the 70’s to the mid aughts. I gave them the heave-ho after several years of progressive nonsense overwhelming the science. And I don’t mean global warming… it was everything, all the time. They had entire issues that were nothing but political opinion pieces. I dumped them and never looked back – even if they had been on my side of the aisle, I wasn’t paying for their political opinions. I subscribed to Reason and Liberty for that.

That was how I got my fix through the 70’s, 80’s and 90’s.

        Omni didn’t survive.

National Geographic …. I don’t remember what happened between us, but the issues got boring for a while.

Discover and Scientific American quit delivering cool science news and started delivering political screeds.

        I dumped them both.

Some of that could be the “magazines are dead” phenomenon. I used to subscribe to all of those, plus Reason, Liberty, and several others intermittently when there was some great deal or some relative needed me to buy in on a kid’s fundraiser.

Overall, this is a thoroughly embarrassing performance, not just by Dr. Singham, but by Scientific American. It is beyond explanation how the editors of this once-prestigious publication, with the term “Scientific” in its name, could have so completely lost track of what makes science science. And then to top it off, they call the people who actually understand what science is “anti-science.”

Kinda OT, but kinda not. More details on that LA sheriff shooting:

Apolinar was struck multiple times in her face and torso but tended to her partner, who was also wounded after they were able to climb out of the police car.

“It’s an extreme situation. She was shot in the face, shot in the upper torso several times,” LASD Lt. Brandon Dean told the Mail. “To have the wherewithal to get yourself out of the vehicle and the line of fire in case it continues, but then to take care of your partner, initiate radio traffic make sure the civilians in the area are safe, it shows a lot about her courage and intestinal fortitude.”

She was a librarian before deciding to become a sheriff three years ago. Tough gal. Check out the picture of her in the article covered in blood, but still handling herself after multiple gunshot wounds.

    • Ozymandias

Also, remember when Gabby Giffords got shot? Remember how that was blamed on “right-wing” rhetoric? Funny how we’re not hearing ANY of that from the Mainstream Media this time, eh? I can’t help but place this at the feet of both the Media and the Dems, who have been all but declaring open season on cops. God knows I’m no cop-sucker, but the Dems have been agitating for harm to people trying to do the near-impossible task of keeping peace in demo-controlled areas among people who seem more akin to Shia and Sunni in Iraq than American citizens.

Joe Biden’s response the next day? “Weapons of war have no place in our communities.” Trump’s was no better (by the by): Death penalty for cop-killers.
As between those two positions – and given how relatively infrequently we execute people (even cop killers) and how long it takes to actually execute someone after they’ve done the deed – it seems to me one of those responses is actually at least (1) coherent to the event, and (2) doesn’t involve gun-grabbing as a solution to something that had nothing to do with “weapons of war.” I can’t help but think that Trump may have gotten the memo on his gun control instincts after his base lost their mind when he started to move in that direction.

      • cyto

Well, that “right wing rhetoric” was perfectly normal and not even remotely violent, and the shooter was a left wing nutcase who was obsessed with Giffords.

Today’s rhetoric is actual calls for actual physical violence by actual top elected democrat officials and thousands of their minions, surrounded by denials that any such violence is occurring, and blatant lies about their political opponents being violent racists.

        So, that’s the distinction.

Can you blame the media for hyping up a teenage boy standing peacefully while a professional provocateur bangs a drum in his face? I mean, what are they supposed to do when something like that happens?

And obviously it is not a national story when a supporter of the top Democrat presidential candidate (and sitting senator) takes an Assault Weapon ™ to go hunting republican members of congress in a Washington DC park. In fact, he’s probably some right wing nutcase anyway…..

I would have to go scour my emails for proof, but I believe that is the case. I think it was when he was at Cherry Point (but I could be mistaken). When I was active in the JA community, there weren’t very many Marine JAs that I didn’t know. The community was only about 500 at the peak of the war and when you narrow it down to those actively practicing (i.e. eliminate the staff pogues and senior folks), it’s a very small community.

      • cyto

I half suspect that Trump’s flirtation with gun control in the form of the bump stock ban was a total toss-off to defang the opposition. It is a meaningless enhancement that adds nothing to a weapon’s real utility (beyond chewing through money and having fun), so giving it up doesn’t really cost anything real.

He’s all about the long, strategic game, even if I rarely have a clue what he’s on about. So it is entirely plausible that this is where that came from.

(I am strict constructionist on the law – if it says it in black and white, you have to follow the law until you change it. So in my book, full auto machine guns are legal, and any law saying different is clearly unconstitutional until properly amended)

  60. l0b0t

Well, last time I wrote in the name of a friend’s son. This time I will either vote for the Short-Fingered Vulgarian out of spite or stay home. Here in NYC my vote for national office holders counts for very little, if anything; I tend to vote no to all incumbents and no to any increase in taxes/levies/fees. We had a fellow a few years back running for the NYC Office of Public Advocate; I voted for him because his sole campaign promise was to show up for his first day of work, lay off the entire staff, turn off the lights, and lock the door. Our Rockaway Peninsula is one of the few parts of the City that voted overwhelmingly for Trump in 2016.

  61. cyto

    On the election front:

I went to west Ft. Lauderdale yesterday, to pick up something my wife bought on MommaMarket on facebook. (moms post crap they want to get rid of for sale)

My first time in that area in a very long while. The first thing I see when I entered the (not gated, but very nice) neighborhood was a Biden/Harris sign. Accompanying it was an “Anybody but Trump” sign.

Huh… first Biden/Harris paraphernalia I have seen in the wild.

That was the only political signage I saw heading through the neighborhood. (there are loads of Trump signs in my area, along with local mayor/councilman signs)

Maybe this area is where all that democrat support lives, I thought. But no further signs materialized.

I pulled into my target driveway, and by the door in the flower bed was a Trump sign, hidden by the family minivan. I mentioned it to the lady of the house, and that opened the floodgates. “I’m glad you didn’t wear a stupid mask…” turns out her neighbor put the sign there the night before – she would have put it out by the road, she says. Very conservative.

    Hm…..

Where’s all this Biden love? I’m not seeing it anywhere.

I see Trump hate – mostly on TV, but also with the wife and her family. None of them could tell me anything about Biden, but they hate Trump with a flaming purple passion.

So the question is, did 4 years of extreme negative campaigning by the media and the DNC machine create enough of them to outweigh the Trump supporters? I’m going ahead and claiming that there are no Biden supporters at all. Just Trump/Anti-Trump.

I’m kind of in the same boat. Kavanaugh pushed me over the edge, but if that had not done it, Russia, Ukraine impeachment, or just the drone of BS, made up issue after BS made up issue would have done it.

I know that there are a lot of us in that camp around libertarian circles…. no real love for Trump, but a flaming passion for the utter destruction of the DNC and everything they stand for.

And then Trump actually turned out to do more or less the kind of stuff I wanted… minus the “spending about 10 times as much as we have to spend” part.

    • robc

So the question is, did 4 years of extreme negative campaigning by the media and the DNC machine create enough of them to outweigh the Trump supporters?

No, hate doesn’t motivate people to vote. They want something to vote FOR.

I dunno. Biden is less than a zero.

At least Sanders believes in something.

Although I will admit, Biden’s team has been doing a good job of propping him up long enough to get 1 or 2 sentences out that they can cut unto a commercial. They seem very effective. They make them to look almost like news coverage. Very different from normal political ads.

Trump has also been doing this – clips of him speaking, instead of the movie voiceover guy.

Also…. if you didn’t see it, a new Remy video dropped. As always, great.

My neighborhood has a handful of Trump signs and several others that have some sort of pro-cop display (the blue line flag, “back the blue” sign, the blue bulb in the porch light) that would seem almost certain to be Trump voters. Zero Biden signs anywhere, although one of the local lefties who has a “In this house we believe…” sign has an “Anyone but Trump” sign.

On the other hand, there are a distressing number of Abigail fucking Spanberger signs.

    • db

I live in a moderately “red” county in western PA. There are definitely Biden/Harris and Conor Lamb signs up in a good number of yards. The Trump and Parnell signs slightly outnumber the Democratic signs. A neighbor who had a Gary Johnson sign in his lawn in 2016 now has a Trump sign.

Interestingly, many signs supporting Trump around here do not say “Trump,” But “Drain the Swamp.” I’m guessing those folks don’t necessarily like the man, but will vote for him?

I’ll get the preface out in front. I live in Hawaii, the state that is so “UV blue” it gave HRC a higher percentage of the vote than anywhere but DC. A state where from 2016-2018 there were 100% Dems in the state senate and three GOP in the state house. A state with an explicitly racist part of government- the Office of Hawaiian Affairs- in which the US Supreme Court in 2000 had to order the state to let all voters vote since OHA is run on tax dollars. Our gun laws are more draconian than almost anywhere in the US and the state has ignored the Fed courts in changing the most blatant anti 2A parts.

I will vote for Trump. (Last time was hold nose vote for GayJay.) Ozy and others have made the case earlier and better than I. Plus I want the left to throw away their masks and come out even more explicitly than now for the socialist dystopia they crave. The reelection of DT is the best way to do that, right now.

I thought about writing in a name- I was thing Tulip or Hayek since they both have spent time out here. But it is more important right now (for me) to push up the DT total. I have seen public support for him in “the country” part of Oahu. That is amazing since that part of the island is deep blue.

I will vote for many local elective offices. I will probably vote for the LP candidate for the state house. I have never, and will never, vote for any OHA candidate. I will vote against every referendum since none advances individual liberty.

In my voting life, I’ve done a full 180. When I was started voting @ 18, I had come from a Southern California Democratic family, blue collar dad, teacher mom, and at the time, they (especially my progressive mom) were full on RDS (Reagan derangement syndrome). The R’s had the reputations of being war mongers, profiting off the military industrial complex and tax cuts for the wealthy – which was true. Being naive, I took after my parents and pulled for ‘D’. But over the next 12 years, I saw slowly saw how bad BOTH parties are when it comes to the spirit of the Constitution and America and just freedom in general. About that time, I stumbled on Radley Balco opinion pieces on Foxnews.com and then to his own personal blog, theagitator.com. I didn’t know it at the time, but I was a libertarian. Ron Paul was the first guy that I was excited about and supported, but after that fizzled, I was momentarily excited for Gary Johnson, but quickly lost hope for the libertarians after some really bad performances and choices – it is no wonder people joke about libertarians. For the 2016, between Hildog vs Trump, I couldn’t justify either one and didn’t vote. But, the last four years has really demonstrated just how bad the D’s have fucked over California (it was bad before, but now it is insanely fucked) and shown that the really hate freedom and us deploraables. They have shown what the D’s will do when they get the power again. But, for Trumps shortcomings (and there are some big ones there), when you list over his many accomplishments, he has demonstrated #1, love of America and Americans and really seems to care. Can’t say about that for any D who really are bent on destroying the foundations of freedom and security in this country. Also, when it comes to freedom, the Supreme Court is really where it is at – The next four years are critical to that end.

    • cyto

I can’t understand people at all.

The (D) government of California shut down 9 MW of power generation in the name of global warming and green energy. This summer, California came up 5 MW short and people had to endure rolling blackouts.

I have a 5.5kW portable unit here. My point is that if you want an extra 5 MW, you just take a feedwater heater offline at a normal coal fired unit and accept the efficiency hit for more peak power. 5MW is nothing.

      • Gustave Lytton

I’m just yanking on the CARB crap that gets added, usually derating engines, on outdoor power equipment.

      • db

That wasn’t meant to be here. I get your point on the emissions equipment. Although I do love the efficiency and power of the new small engines.

      • dorvinion

Ya, shutting down 9MW of generation is a drop in the bucket.

My town of 10,000 people has 28MW of backup diesel generators to temporarily power the town if the distribution lines from where our power is generated go down.

      • Ed Wuncler

From what I understand (as an outsider) the California GOP are useless and pretty resigned to never gaining the majorities again in the statehouse and secondly, the California Dems have created an environment where even if the GOP cared to gain majorities in the state house, would have a hard time doing so because of primary rules and gerrymandering.

It’s the same thing here in Illinois. The Illinois Dems are blatantly corrupt and incompetent but yet they are granted the supermajorities and the governor’s mansion. When former Republican governor Bruce Rauner tried to enact some reforms, the Illinois GOP stabbed him in the back and voted with the Dems to increase the state’s budget.

      • Scruffy Nerfherder

This. The GOP is complicit in those states. They’re fat, happy, and content to collect fundraising dollars for doing nothing.

      • Ed Wuncler

I will say that the Illinois Policy group has done a great job with getting the message about the state’s fiscal troubles out to the general public and they aren’t so-con or pro police. But the best part about the group is that while they do lean Republican, they will rip apart any Republican official present or past who dithers on fiscal and pension reform.

  68. DEG

My answers haven’t mostly not changed. I will be holding my nose and voting for Trump, warts and all.

I don’t remember if I mentioned NH governor in my last answer. For NH governor, I will vote for the LPNH candidate. I can’t remember his name.

  69. J. Frank Parnell

    A) Meh. I’m in California so my presidential vote doesn’t matter. I’m telling any lefties who ask that I’m voting for Jo because I support women and it’s time we had a woman president.

    B) No.

    C) No, I’ll be showing up to vote against Democrats and vote for the ‘make Uber legal again’ proposition.

  70. Chipwooder

All of this discussion just makes me pine that much more longingly for true federalism. In a gargantuan multiethnic, multiracial conglomerate society, I doubt there will ever be a candidate for president I’d ever be enthused to support. It would be far more sensible for the president to be a figure who doesn’t have all that much impact on our daily lives with the real power belonging to the governor of a state. Yes, I say this as a resident of a state that is unlikely to have anything but prog governors any time soon. The ideal would be that real federalism would spur the Great Resorting as people naturally migrate to the states that more suit them.

I’ve said it before – if the majority in the northeast and the Pacific coast want to make their states proggy fiefdoms, that’s no skin off my nose. Let ’em. Just let other states be something else and I’ll find my way there. As things stand today, there’s no escaping the DC borg.

    • Hyperion

Dem’s first effort to undo federalism and make us one big Borg is to undo the electoral college. After that and the giant bailouts to blue states, it’s all over anyway.

      • SUPREME OVERLORD trshmnstr

Dem’s first effort to undo federalism and make us one big Borg is to undo the electoral college.

If I may quibble, that’s their first attempt at amending the constitution to do undo federalism in a long generation, but it is far away from their first effort or their first successful constitutional amendment killing federalism.

    • Gustave Lytton

I’ve said it before – if the majority in the northeast and the Pacific coast want to make their states proggy fiefdoms, that’s no skin off my nose. Let ’em.

And those places are still part of the United States and entitled to the full rights and privileges of all other US citizens, including protection of said rights. I’m fine with with such places doing proggy stuff that they’re allowed to do, which would be toothless declarations of insanity and not much else.

    • Idle Hands

The dems/progressives would never be happy with that.

  71. Hyperion

You know what make a Trump voter be really cool?

We need Bad Orange Man dolls. They should be all orange and furry and shaggy and look mean. Sort of like a orange Chuky doll if you’re a Raiders fan.

And we’d all dress up in Pirate or Viking costumes and paint our faces black and orange and do rallies, riding through town in Hummers with spikes on them and machine gun turrets waving our Bad Orange Man dolls and chanting ‘Bad Orange Man, Bad Orange Man!’.

I’d give a zillion fucking dollars if I had it to watch Stelter cover that on CNN. ‘Look at them! They’re scaring me, and they called me Humpty Dumpty! Hide your children and stay indoors!’.

    • Ozymandias

If you can find someone to fund this, I’m willing to dress in Bengals colors just for the lulz.
Plus, we’ll be the best armed group of malcontents EVAH!!!!
(I’m calling dibs on being the up-gunner right now!)

      • Ozymandias

Wait a minute – Tundra just pointed out these colors are also the Flyers’ colors.
Hmmm… I may have to rethink my support for this now…

    • Toxteth O'Grady

I can get you some Trumpy Bears… (I can’t believe that’s a real thing and not an SNL skit.)

l0b0t – on an older thread which was dead when I saw it, you said something about missing Liberty magazine. You know it is still around? It is a bit of a shadow of its former self but there are still some good articles up there.

    Liberty Unbound

There is no word yet on when the site rework will be done. When the site went live I downloaded all the PDF versions of the print magazine. When I saw they had site problems, I was very happy I did that.

    • l0b0t

HOLY MACKEREL! Thanks, I had no idea.

      • DEG

        You’re welcome!

    • l0b0t

And the 1st article there is about NAGPRA (the Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act). Hell yeah!

    • B.P.

I did an internship with them many years ago.

    • Fourscore

I still have some old copies, if anyone wants them.

  73. Subwoofer

I implore everyone here to cast a ballot.

Even if you don’t like any of the options, can’t vote for anyone running in good conscience, and just want to stay home, please don’t.

Vote fraud is real, and with the unceasing push for vote-by-mail everywhere combined with the fact that the Progsteam Media has been laying the groundwork for ‘counting all the ballots’ including ones found after election day, its important that everyone at least get to the polls and cast a ballot. Even if you leave it blank.

If you register that you voted, even if you didn’t vote for anyone, that makes it that much harder to steal the election. Hell fill in EVERY oval if you have to to get your ballot voided. But if you don’t vote, some prog somewhere is likely to fab one up for you and you’ll join the ranks of the dead in voting for Harris.

    • prolefeed

I’m not registered to vote. Not seeing how anyone can fake a ballot for someone in that case.

      • Gender Traitor

They register to vote as you?

      • SUPREME OVERLORD trshmnstr

some places have same day voter registration. Show up with a utility bill and (in some states) a non-photo ID, and you’re set.

      • The Hyperbole

As a “voting only encourages the assholes’ true believer, I haven’t voted since ’92 and thus I don’t really have a good understanding of how any of the voting works. I’ve been looking for the mechanics of how this massive voter fraud is going to work and I haven’t found too many solid answers.

      • Scruffy Nerfherder

        Magnets, they use magnets.

      • db

        How the fuck they work?

      • Nephilium

In that case, you’re probably not registered to vote anymore. Which means you’re being suppressed!

      • Gustave Lytton

        Hey buddy,… never mind.

    • Scruffy Nerfherder

      A little Devil’s advocate here:

Why is it verboten to off a foreign nation’s leader instead of pissing away blood and money scrapping with their military in a limited way?

Mattis would have us bogged down in another shithole with ill defined goals and shitty parameters. Trump just comes in and says “Why don’t we just settle this shit and get on with it?”

That said, we should just stay out altogether.

      • Stinky Wizzleteats

I won’t speak in general but in this specific instance, in Syria where there’s an ongoing brutal sectarian civil war and he has the support of most of the populace and the Russians, it would have been an absolute disaster of epic proportions. It’s a good thing Mad Dog talked him out of it if that’s what really happened.

      • Stinky Wizzleteats

But, yeah, I had forgotten that Mattis was also pissed that Trump didn’t want to get further involved. I guess I’m not too pleased with either of them.

      • Scruffy Nerfherder

I’m speaking as an alternative to the bullshit proposition that we should have put troops on the ground in Syria. Because that’s what WAR Inc. was pushing for.

      • Stinky Wizzleteats

That’s a false choice or at least it should be but even powerful world leaders don’t usually assassinate their rivals and it’s largely for the same reasons that Republicans don’t prosecute political rivals and vise versa: They want that to be taboo for obvious reasons.

      • Larry Joe

I wouldn’t say it’s verboten; the CIA has a history of attempted assassinations, no? It’s just not the _military_ way to deal with things.
But there are some practical matters. For starters, government officials don’t want people coming after them; I imagine it’s a bit of an iterated prisoner’s dilemma thing. If our enemies saw us going after other enemy leaders, they might be more willing to take a chance. The other major consideration is that offing a leader doesn’t erode his support. We might just end up with an angrier enemy that lashes out in more universally destructive ways.

Finally, whatever shared taboo there is over it today may end up eroding just as the British and French feelings about the dignity of not lining up all neat and tidy for your enemy to shoot at you did.

      • Scruffy Nerfherder

I used to give the practice of not assassinating leaders more credence, but I saw how willing those leaders are to sacrifice their own countrymen and decided “Fuck it, let the leaders bear the burden of the bloodletting”

  74. l0b0t

Shit! There are 3 NYPD choppers circling the neighborhood and a rush of FDNY vehicles to the boardwalk. This pretty much always means a drowning. More often than not, these drownings happen to people who do not know how to swim but come to the beach with friends and get careless. It breaks my heart and makes me really angry simultaneously. That there are teens and young adults in 2020 who don’t how to swim, or at least, drown-proof themselves is shameful.

    • Mojeaux

That there are teens and young adults in 2020 who don’t how to swim, or at least, drown-proof themselves is shameful.

      *hangs head*

I, too, feel that is a life skill one must have. However, I never got around to getting it for my kids (for various reasons) at the appropriate ages. XX had one section of lessons. I tried to get XY lessons, but he was too old for one set of programs and too young for another. They don’t have teen beginning swimming lessons. I did spend one summer teaching him how to swim, but I don’t think it took. A couple of friends from church helped, too.

      • Mojeaux

        Oh, NICE! Thank you!!!

Also, I meant to tell you congrats on New Kitty.

      • Gender Traitor

Thank you! He turned out to have a low-grade infection per the vet, so couldn’t get neutered today. He’s home, isolated from Alpha Cat (just for the sake of his health. I think they’re going to get along, knock wood!) in Tom T’s office, where he can look out the window to the back yard.

        http://www.isr.org
        Infant Swim Resource
(Conflict of interest confession: I’ve worked with those folks before and dated someone pretty high up their food chain once upon a lifetime ago.)
Regardless, they do great work in teaching infants how to “drown proof” and it’s no bullshit. If drowning was a disease it would rank up among the worst of child-killing/maiming illnesses. In addition to the deaths, there are a large number of kids who survive with permanent brain damage and other debilitating illnesses.

      • db

dated someone pretty high up their food chain

        Weirdest euphemism ever?

      • Mojeaux

I should’ve done that. I MEANT to do that. Intentions, roads, all that.

      • SUPREME OVERLORD trshmnstr

We didnt do that exact curriculum, but we have had baby trshmnstr in the water from 18 months on. I can’t recommend infant swim classes highly enough. Not that we’ve had an emergency situation, but her confidence in the water at age 3 allows her to enjoy the pool instead of clinging to a parent.

      • Tundra

We started at 6 months with our kids. Those were fun as hell and both mine turned out to be really good and confident swimmers.

      • Scruffy Nerfherder

Advice for a new parent. Have a few drinks before the first ISR class.

      • Tundra

As a former lifeguard and swimming instructor, I’m appalled. 😉

Not really, although living in the land of 10K lakes it always shocked me when I met someone who couldn’t swim.

It’s never too late. I used to teach adult classes and almost anyone can learn, usually pretty quickly.

      • l0b0t

Admittedly, I’m somewhat of an outlier; growing up on a sailboat in South Florida, not drowning closely followed walking in the skills-baby-needs-to-have department. I can get a bit a preachy on the topic. When we went to Panama for NIMROD DANCER (which quickly morphed into JUST CAUSE), there were soldiers who can be spotted in the video footage wearing white armbands – this indicates they can not swim and must be accompanied by a swimming battle buddy at all times. This led to Army instituting drown-proofing classes which the stronger swimmers got to instruct. It was one the best things I did in Army; a whole week (every 3 months) of goofing off at the pool while teaching young men how to tread water, shed body armor/gear while submerged, and make floaties out of their trousers and rucksacks.

      • Apples and Knives

My daughter had a quick swimming lesson from my dad when she was 4 and never looked back, she was born for it. My son has been offered swimming lessons at summer camp for the past three years and has always been too afraid to do it. We tried bribing, didn’t work. The second summer he started talking about how he didn’t want to take swimming lessons three months before camp started. He wasn’t sleeping at night because he was thinking about drowning (part of the final test involves swimming in the deep water), so we gave in again. So we talked about swimming lessons at a local pool, then everything got shut down because of Covid. He’s getting to the age where I think he’s less terrified of the water and more embarrassed to take swimming lessons with kids way younger than him.

    • Hyperion

More Covid deaths, swimming without a mask.

      • dbleagle

It shocked me on how many people in Hawaii, including people born and raised here, do not know how to swim. The state is known for surfing and ocean culture and multiple 10,000’s don’t know how to swim.

        The mind, it boggles.

  75. Larry Joe

    A) I’ll vote for Trump again. I don’t like him as a man, nor really as a politician; but as stated above, no new wars. I’m embarrassed for our country that one of these two putzes is going to be the face of the nation. And I bet a lot of Americans feel this way. As much as I love the freedoms enshrined in our Constitution, I suspect that its process for elections is fundamentally broken. Not that I have any great solutions, though.

Though I would think it better he didn’t, the man elected does have great potential to affect many Americans’ lives (maybe not mine as much directly, though). I’m frightened by the identity politics that has taken center stage, and how an opposition to it can get you fired. I work for a small tech company and keep my mouth shut to avoid problems. If Biden were elected, this “national conversation on race” would push harder into divisiveness that would be hard to come back from. I can also recognize that Trump’s brand of nationalism has legitimately hurt some fellow compatriots. I see Trump as more likely harmful to some individuals and Biden bad more generally for everybody. Trump as less likely to start more wars and actually facilitating some meaningful peace deals; it might be unlikely to change my life, but more world peace and prosperity is a plus. I’d rather not consider what President Harris would pursue, and I have questions about Biden’s ability to effectively govern. Most of all, I would like Trump to select SCOTUS nominees, even if they dragged through the mud in a Dem-controlled senate.

  76. Fourscore

    I chose C.

I last voted for Reagan’s first term, I felt dirty. I’ve managed to scrub the dirt off and realize it doesn’t make any difference. I began to search and found there were others with a similar outlook. Took awhile and a lot of reading before it had a name but here I am.

Often elections come during deer hunting season and I wouldn’t have time to vote. Like Dick Cheney, I have more important things to do.

“All we ever wanted was to be left alone”

    • B.P.

Being left alone is not on the menu.

      • Fourscore

I get the same president as everyone else. I don’t need to vote to have someone to tell me what to do, I’m married.

  77. Mostly Peaceful JaimeRoberto

In a normal election I’d probably vote Libertarian. This time I’m voting for Trump. I’m in CA and under no illusion that he’ll win here, but I want him to win both the popular vote and the electoral college this time around. The Dems’ behavior these last four years has been atrocious and should not be rewarded. I keep hoping that if they lose, they will finally have some introspective moments to think about where they’ve gone wrong. But then I hoped that when Obama was elected that criticism of a black politician would no longer be considered racist since all politicians get criticized, and we all know how that worked out.

  78. tarran

Put me down in the C camp.

The death-throes of the U.S. government are going to suck no matter what.

  79. EvilSheldon

    My answers haven’t changed.

1 – I’m going to vote for the candidate least likely to harm me or mine. My delicate sensibilities don’t even get consulted.

2 – If I felt like writing in a candidate, I’d just stay home and jack off instead.

3 – This is a sensible decision for a lot of people. In my case, there’s a tiny possibility that Virginia might be in play. Enough so that taking half an hour after work is a reasonable expenditure of give-a-fucks.

It helps that my polling place is literally right next door to my apartment complex.

4 – Yes, absolutely. My quality of life has taken a nose dive since the progs took over VA. If the GOP wrests back control, it’s at least conceivable that some of the worst excesses of the Gov. Klanhood administration could be rolled back. Even knowing the limp-dicked weaklings we have in the local party…

    • SUPREME OVERLORD trshmnstr

My quality of life has taken a nose dive since the progs took over VA.

It amazed me how fast it flipped. I feel lucky that we got out in one piece (although I just had to pay the peoples republic of prince william for the privilege of owning a car, despite not living there for almost 6 months)

  80. Grumbletarian

    1. Trump, in pretty good conscience. He’s a loudmouthed boob, but he’s also drawn down troops abroad, started no new wars, brokered peace among middle eastern nations, lowered taxes, cut regulations, and put a bunch of decent judges on the bench at all levels.

    2. No.

    3. No

And to all the “I’d vote for Trump but it makes no dif in my state” folks, I’d really like to see the left’s reaction if Trumpenhitler wins the national popular vote as well as the EC vote. Please make my Election Day wish come true. :puppydog eyes:
