Banjos asked for help with the morning links this week, using the lame excuse that Sloopy is out taking care of business things. This means she has one fewer child to care for, so I’m not seeing the problem. All the other days were gobbled up, so you get stuck with me on a Friday morning. By the way, when this goes live I will still be snuggled up in bed, so send your complaints to Sloopy, since this is all his fault.

Incidentally, Heroic Mulatto has recently said monstrous things about likes of Animaniacs and Bugs Bunny, and, by implication, equally monstrous things about the Three Stooges and Laurel and Hardy. Words such as “suck” were used. Sure, you could ask him to explain his position, but wouldn’t it be so much easier to lob virtual rotten vegetables at this obvious monster?

Greatest actor ever, Tim Robbins
I recently rewatched Bull Durham. He looked every bit of his actual 30 years in that movie, totally unconvincing as a young phenom. Can’t act away 30 years.
On the other hand, Shawshank may be the greatest movie ever made.
That was supposed to say, “Can’t act away 10 years.”
He’s another acclaimed actor that always seems to me to be playing the same character. In his case it is amiable but dopey guy.
I have come to the realization that most of them (especially the deNiro/Pacino generation) do. Method acting my ass.
Michael Cain and Tom Hardy are the only two that I can think of offhand that don’t. Maybe Christian Bale.
Gary Oldman and Tim Roth could probably be on that list as well.
I can’t speak to the others mentioned, but Oldman’s a genius. I’d watch him read his grocery list.
“Oldman’s a genius.”
Agreed. He’s also very antiestablishment. I can’t think of a role he’s played where I didn’t feel invested in his character.
I agree with both of those and am embarrassed I did not think of Oldman. He is truly talented.
Daniel Day Lewis is also on this list. And, as much of a asshole leftist as he is in real life, Sean Penn should be as well.
I think Billy Bob Thorton does a pretty good job of at least looking like somebody else in many of his roles. I remember realizing that was him in Tombstone years after seeing it.
I’ve watched that movie MANY times. I had no idea that was Billy Bob.
Slingblade was the first movie I ever saw with him in it. Side note: The 1990s and early 2000s were GOLDEN for good, unique cinema.
I remember Dwight Yoakam being praised for being a shockingly good actor, but I felt he was acting to type and delivering his lines as per his country boy persona/person.
BAD SANTA!
BillyBob wasn’t anyone when Tombstone was made.
Nobody knew who he was then.
Sling Blade was 3 years later.
I’m actually going to stick up fo Johnny Depp here because he has managed to manifest wholly different characters with a lot of his roles.
But he does trend toward creepy and/or flamboyant around whom swirl extraordinary amounts of outrageous drama.
Plus he had an awful pitching motion. Say what you will about Charlie Sheen as an actor, but he is pretty damned convincing as a pitcher in Major League.
Tom Selleck probably had the best swing of an actor in a movie in Mr. Baseball.
I haven’t seen Bull Durham in forever but I recall that Costner swings pretty well, but he also has a baseball background.
Yes, Costner’s solid. Dennis Haysbert does reasonably well. Tom Berenger, not so much, and the less said about Corbin Bernsen, the better.
Fun fact about Mr. Baseball – the brief role in the beginning of the young first base phenom whose presence leads Selleck to be traded to Japan was none other than a young, then-unknown Frank Thomas.
I understand why it was panned, but I like For the Love of the Game.
It probably would have been better if Michael Shaara had lived long enough to finish it.
Remove the first the from the title.

Reckless endangerment
Scalia wrote the majority opinion in the big Second Amendment case, District of Columbia v Heller, back in 2008. But Scalia made clear that nothing in the decision should cast doubt on longstanding limits to protect public safety, such as the ban on convicted felons possessing firearms.
Eleven years later, in 2019, his protégé, Barrett, wrote that blanket ban violated the Second Amendment.
The 7th Circuit case, Kanter v Barr, involved a man convicted of one count of mail fraud. Rickey Kanter, who ran a company called Dr. Comfort, served his time and wanted his gun rights back. The court majority rejected the idea. But Barrett produced a 37-page dissent tracing the history of the Second Amendment and the history of punishing convicted felons.
——-
“In sum, founding-era legislatures categorically disarmed groups whom they judged to be a threat to the public safety,” Barrett wrote. “But neither the convention proposals nor historical practice supports a legislative power to categorically disarm felons because of their status as felons.”
The Cato Institute’s Shapiro weighed in on behalf of the plaintiff, who made orthopedic shoes and inserts that he falsely represented had been approved by Medicare.
“Misrepresenting shoe inserts shouldn’t disqualify him from being able to carry a firearm for his own self-defense or Martha Stewart with her obstruction of justice, or someone convicted of insider trading. These are not what the enactors of the Second Amendment or the 14th Amendment had in mind when they understood what kinds of restrictions could be in place on this important right,” Shapiro said.
But scores of federal judges have upheld that blanket ban for people convicted of felonies after balancing the Second Amendment against public safety. UCLA’s Winkler said he agrees that a categorical ban on felons is “over-inclusive,” but he diverges when it comes to Barrett’s line of reasoning.
He said her originalist approach to the Second Amendment could throw into question a lot of newer laws on the books, from prohibitions on machine guns to so-called red flag laws in at least 20 states that allow authorities or relatives to ask for court permission to remove weapons from people who represent a danger to themselves or others.
“We only started banning machine guns from civilian hands in the 1980s,” Winkler said. “Does that mean that there’s a constitutional right to have machine guns because there’s no strong historical precedent for banning those weapons?”
That Public Safety clause is a powerful tool. Thank goodness the founding fathers saw fit to include it. Otherwise, who knows what sort of self-destructive mischief the plebs would get up to?
““Does that mean that there’s a constitutional right to have machine guns because there’s no strong historical precedent for banning those weapons?””
Wilfully misinterpreting originalism.
It means that there’s a constitutional right to have machine guns because “shall not be infringed” means no burdens or restrictions on the right to keep and bear arms.
^^^^ this.
Well, now that he mentions it, yes there should be a consitutional right to own machine guns.
There is, and it is a natural right not a constitutional one.
The idea that machine guns are beyond the purvey of the 2nd amendment because they are a technological advance which people from the 18th century could not have imagined overlooks all the other technological advances in between. Percussion caps over flintlocks, revolvers, self-contained ammunition, manual repeating arms – all these things would have been totally novel and neigh unimaginable at the close of the 18th century. So saying that machineguns should be banned because nobody would have foreseen such a technological advance is the same as saying all other advances should also be banned – and saying so would be equally ridiculous.
Yes. And it’s not just because of historical context of the 2A (allowing the general public to maintain arms of war) but because the 2A is plainly worded prohibition that all have a right to bear to arms. There’s no public safety or historical precedent exception clause in the amendment.
Nice try, NPR. You’re losing this one.
balancing the Second Amendment against public safety
That’s not how rights are supposed to work.
her originalist approach to the Second Amendment could throw into question a lot of newer laws on the books
Ideally.
Does that mean that there’s a constitutional right to have machine guns because there’s no strong historical precedent for banning those weapons?
There is a reason the term “arms” is used in the amendment in question. “Arms” means weapons which means instruments intended for fighting. Choke on that.
That’s not how rights are supposed to work.
Correct, and its the exact utilitarian critique used by contemporary authoritarians against the founding of this country.
Something something Natural Rights versus something something granted rights. I think I got it right.
Said it before, saying it again. Public safety is for lamers.
Lamer: a person who has committed mayhem.
I am technically correct.
Best kind of correct.
Also, I’ve never heard of that usage before, but I kinda like it.
We only started banning machine guns from civilian hands in the 1980s
Yes, and when the govt lost the first prosecution under that they folded at the appeals court level rather than risk losing the whole country at SCotUS. Fucking law prof ought to know about United States v. Rock Island Armory.
Another interesting wrinkle about the Hughes amendment (the legislation which closed the door to further registration of machine guns in 1986) was that it passed on a voice vote – and if you have heard the recording of that vote it is clear that the “Nays” were much louder than the “Ayes” but the speaker simply stated that the “Ayes” had the vote.
And not one fucking spineless Republican demanded a recorded vote.
Republicans have long been little more than the DNC minor league. They seldom challenge the democrats because they basically share a similar belief but are cast to be Devil’s advocate.
Somebody here a while ago likened Team Red to an abusive husband.
This time they promised to be good and stop hitting you. And yet in every new legislative they wind up hitting you,
I’m not a fan of most analogies, but this one is pretty much on point.
“balancing the Second Amendment against public safety”
And you can go fuck yourself. In fact, if you need some help with that I wil gladly pitch in my rusty old chainsaw for you to use.
He said her originalist approach to the Second Amendment could throw into question a lot of newer laws on the books, from prohibitions on machine guns to so-called red flag laws in at least 20 states that allow authorities or relatives to ask for court permission to remove weapons from people who represent a danger to themselves or others.
And? Red flag laws are clearly unconstitutional for reasons that have nothing to do with the 2nd Amendment, on top of going against the 2nd.
The biggest World War Two bomb ever found in Poland exploded under water on Tuesday as navy divers tried to defuse it.
…
“All mine divers were outside the danger zone.”
I feel like these things should be in the same sentence.
Mines are not bombs. That it was exploded under water means they found it there (doubt they moved a live and unstable real bomb considering the risk) and that is a mine. Not a bomb.
Going from memory, but pretty sure it was an aerial bomb (Tallboy I think) from an RAF raid trying to bust a ship in that canal. Missed and stuck in the mud or something.
Once it is under water it no longer is a bomb….
Bomb: a container filled with explosive, incendiary material, smoke, gas, or other destructive substance, designed to explode on impact or when detonated by a time mechanism, remote-control device, or lit fuse.
Moving a bomb under water does not make it not a bomb.
Um…yes, yes it still is.
/Ordnance Corps officer
Must be why they sent the mine disposal team to get rid of it…
You want the UXO squad from the army to wade into the water?
You seem to be confusing the disposal unit with the ordnance they are taking care of.
A large bomb was dropped from an airplane. It did not explode. It was not a mine laid by a ship.
My point is that it doesn’t matter how it came to be about Swiss. Once it is under water it is considered a mine because mine disposal teams are what will be needed to get rid of it.
So I throw hand grenade into the water, and suddenly it becomes a “mine”?
You do not change the nature of an object by who cleans it up.
https://publicintelligence.net/u-s-army-unexploded-ordnance-uxo-procedures-manual/
RE: UXO Procedures.
My understanding is you have to kick it first before you can report it. To make sure it really is UXO.
I can provide a NAVY link that says if it is under water it is disposed of as if it was a mine. What’s the point?
“as if it was”
So you are slowly coming around to the fact that an aircraft dropped bomb is not a “mine”?
My understanding is you have to kick it first before you can report it. To make sure it really is UXO.
This method is doubly effective, because It identifies the issue and gets rid of it at the same time.
Some SSG removed his foot at FT Irwin in ~’94 when he spotted and kicked a mortar round in Brown-Debnam pass that was later dated to the early ’50s when that area was a live fire mortar range.
If it needs to be disposed off under water, it is a mine.
If the ordinance needs to be disposed of from atop an ice cream sundae, then it’s a dessert topping.
Ordinances aren’t disposed of, they are repealed. (I know it is awful, but it wasn’t any more obnoxious than the debate it follows so I don’t care)
Are y’all really having a semantic argument about a giant explosive?
Can’t get much more glib than this.

For those in need of a good 80s punk nostalgia fix, here’s one of the greatest documentaries on the scene, Another State of Mind.
https://youtu.be/yx43BTch5Uw
Some of it is cringe, but part of being young is being stupid.
I haven’t seen that one. How does it measure up to The Decline of Western Civilization?
The first scenes of Decline that feature Fear, with them baiting and mocking the audience, are amazing and the most punk thing I’ve ever seen.
Decline is the better movie, in almost every regard, but I think that Another State of Mind is more accurate to what was really happening. Decline was obviously trying to make a statement, and as such it went for more shock factor.
Abandon hope
One of the world’s biggest trials of COVID-19 therapies released its long-awaited interim results yesterday—and they’re a letdown. None of the four treatments in the Solidarity trial, which enrolled more than 11,000 patients in 400 hospitals around the globe, increased survival—not even the much-touted antiviral drug remdesivir. Scientists at the World Health Organization (WHO) released the data as a preprint on medRxiv last night ahead of its planned publication in the New England Journal of Medicine.
Yet scientists praised the unprecedented study itself and the fact that it helped bring clarity about four existing, ‘repurposed’ treatments that each held some promise against COVID-19. “It’s disappointing that none of the four have come out and shown a difference in mortality, but it does show why you need big trials,” says Jeremy Farrar, director of the Wellcome Trust. “We would love to have a drug that works, but it’s better to know if a drug works or not than not to know and continue to use it,” says WHO’s chief scientist, Soumya Swaminathan.
The prospects of two of the four treatments—the malaria drug hydroxychloroquine and the HIV drug combination ritonavir/lopinavir—had faded after another large study, the United Kingdom’s Recovery trial, showed them not to increase survival in June. After analyzing that study and its own data up till then, WHO decided to drop both from the study.
There was still hope for remdesivir and for interferon-beta, which initially had been given in combination with ritonavir/lopinavir but was tested as a standalone drug after the Recovery data came out. But neither of those treatments lowered mortality or delayed the moment patients needed ventilation to help them breathe. The results in these two treatment arms are likely to be the most scrutinized.
And my confidence level in the validity of this “study” hovers slightly above zero.
Keep up the good work, WHO and the rest of you Public Safety cultists.
Heh. Public safety cultists. I like it

“I would say we don’t back off of the COVID-19 standards because it will also reduce the impact of flu and other illnesses,” he added. “We think continuing to apply these same techniques would be further beneficial to the people and to the Army overall.”
Oh hell… more of the “safety above all else!” crap. These damn idiots want to put us all in the Matrix / Bubble Boy scenario, as if that’s how the human race’s immune system gets stronger over all.
I think that ship sailed when we stopped letting kids play unsupervised.
I blame L&O: Special Victims Unit and I am dead serious about that.
Sounds like we have a real fight on our hands to just get back to normalcy. It’s unbelievable.
Everyday I wake up hoping people will just stop and say ‘fuck this shit’.
Someone called it ‘normalcy bias’ where people like us are actually abnormal now.
It’s pretty fricken scary and frightening.
I really don’t get the intense desire for hysteria so many people seem to harbor.
It makes them a part of something noteworthy, which is an ardent desire of millions of nobodies across the country.
Hoffer, of course
I’d say just the opposite. it’s an overinflated faith in self that drives most of this do-gooderism. It’s very rare to have somebody saying “government, please save me from myself”. Mostly of the time it’s “government, make those people behave right, just like I am”
Without social media, we probably wouldn’t be here. The do-gooders are reinforcing each others’ assumptions and giving moral support.
I absolutely believe that in isolation from the constant barrage from the media and their Facebook friends, most people wouldn’t have the stones to be telling you to stay under lockdown.
Fuck, man, I love being a nobody. I desire nothing so intently as being left alone.
I’m going to hold out and be positive that somehow this blows over despite such comments.
It just amazes me someone thinks this way.
I get the feeling that opinion is changing a little bit Rufus. I think Ford has pushed it too hard/far here in Ontario. But I’m generally with you, I think a lot of people are still way too scared/ignorant and it’s happening way too slowly.
People are just terrible at evaluating risk, and don’t have the information to do it anyway.
I’d like to blame it on the generalized wussiness of the millennials and post-millennials, but really the boomers are equally bad.
Gen Xers haven’t impressed either. But I think we’re still the most rational overall.
That’s just because we don’t care.

“Trump is the ultimate enemy of America.”
That one got a a “take your meds” response from me.
The most hilarious thing about the Trump era has been far-left types who generally despise the US and blame it for every ill in the world morphing into flag-brandishing superpatriots because RUSSSSSSSSSSIA!!1! or something.
Now that there is hard proof that it was all orchestrated by the Democrats, including quite a few higher ups in our intelligence and enforcement agencies, they can’t shut up fast enough about RUSSIA!!!!!
Mostly, but I’ve been surprised by how many hardcore believers refuse to give up the ghost.
He’s not even far left. He’s just a white middle-aged divorced dude who’s been involved in his local Democratic politics for decades. Trump-Hate is a totem of their identity.
I have found most Trump haters, you know the ones really pissed off and angry he exists to the point they start foaming at them mouth, will tell you they have a legitimate issue/reason for that. Only thing is when you dig dep you find their feverish dislike comes from the fact that he managed to win an election that had been rigged for one of the most despicable entities on this planet, and it hurt them because it challenged their deeply held stupid beliefs that progressivism showed how smart they were or feared Trumps campaign to invalidated the mendacious unaccountable militarized credentialed elite globalist class would hurt their pocket books.
And they all learned nothing from it.
Here they are again trying to run an absolutely HORRIBLE candidate against Trump.
Here they are again trying like hell to suppress hard evidence of corruption by their candidate.
Here they are again telling us how they’ve already won.
I can’t wait to hear the howling about ’emails’ again. Its deja vu.
I have had all but one, yes, one, out of hundreds of Trump haters I talked to that were fine with any and all means being used to git rid of him. When I pointed out that once the precedent was set, it would be used someday on someone they liked, and not a single one of them got the point. They just don’t care. They want their fragile egos to be rewarded and their stupid leftist beliefs to be vindicated by having this guy destroyed. People that are willing to throw morals out to get their way, even if they are stupid enough to believe they will only do it once, will do it for whatever reason again. And that’s why they need to be defeated.
What I always think whenever I hear that horseshit is “You bought him, You ride him”. Disingenuous Cuntes, the lot of them.
I didn’t watch too much of either “townhalls”. Anyone who had doubts about media bias could just flip between the two events.
ABC’sCllintonista George Stephanopoulos Fails to Ask Joe Biden About Hunter Biden EmailsWhile George was giving old Joe the tongue bath, did the bitch from NBC ever talk about Hunter?
No. And I don’t recall Trump bringing it up.
NPR to the rescue
When President Trump and Joe Biden faced off for the first — and so far, only — presidential debate late last month, Trump attacked his Democratic rival with a false claim about Hunter Biden.
“Hunter got thrown out of the military,” Trump said. “He was thrown out, dishonorably discharged, for cocaine use.”
That’s factually wrong. Hunter Biden, age 50, received an administrative discharge, not a dishonorable discharge, from the U.S. Navy Reserve in 2014 after he tested positive for cocaine.
Congress should impeach President Cartoon Villain for violating the Americans With Disabilities Act.
That is being thrown out of the military while your Dad is the Vice President.
He got an admin sep only because his father was the fucking VP. Anyone without such influence would have received at least an OTH.
He absolutely was thrown out of the military, and he absolutely did pop on the piss test. The semantics of the exact nature of his discharge are completely irrelevant. I’d also love to see a bit more of an examination on precisely why a 40something lawyer was given a direct commission in the naval reserves as a PAO in the first place.
On one or multiple? I have my doubts it was the first time either.
Is the preparation for the ‘He’s a troubled soul, all of this corruption is forgivable… especially the parts that implicate his father, SHUT UP and vote Biden you little ret… ahem. We must support this poor addicted soul. Here’s a picture of his dead family.”
Speaking of that, has there been an interview where Biden has drug out a dead relative to dance on?

i can’t honestly believe noone anywhere has brought up the fact that the cosponser of the harshest crime bill we’ve ever passed was smoking crack everywhere scot free while so many minorities are rotting in prison. Oh wait yes I can.
A distinction lost on most Americans, I bet. And the ones who do understand the difference also know why a VP’s son was treated with kid gloves.
Facebook Bans The Babylon Bee For Being Too Accurate
Hm…site seems to be down now.
While many social media networks are struggling with slowing the spread of fake news, Facebook is suffering from the opposite problem. People are sharing jokes thinking they are just funny, fake stories, but then they are finding out that they are closer to the truth than any Fox News or CNN article.
“The Babylon Bee claims to be satire, but their articles keep coming true. It’s a clear case of false advertising,” said Mark Zuckerberg. “We can’t allow a news source this pure, this true, this perfect to infiltrate our platform and actually tell the people the truth.”
Facebook SWAT teams showed up at The Babylon Bee’s offices and took our editors into custody for reeducation. We do not think it is going to work, as we will resist any attempts to brainwash us, and also, Mark Zuckerberg is an upstanding citizen and an important contributor to society.
Meta-satire is notoriously hard to pull off, but the Bee just keeps crushing it.
Morning, Glibs. The site wouldn’t let me post this last night, so I’m trying again today.

I really don’t get the intense desire for hysteria so many people seem to harbor.
It allows them to play-act at heroism. Wearing a mask to fight this super-plague makes them feel as if they are slogging through waist deep surf to Omaha Beach.

it’s embarrassing. I can wrap my brain around women acting like this but men pretending they aren’t replaceable cogs in the machine just makes me shake my head at those fucking pussies.
We’re a species designed to adapt to difficulties and overcome them, but we have been very good at that and now most of us grow to adulthood and live our lives without ever facing real difficulties. Since our brains crave the challenge of overcoming, we make up or exaggerate risks to overcome.
Explanation of the siren song of procrastination?
I was thinking more about misevaluating risks when I
pulled that out of my asswrote that, but I think it may be at play in a lot of modern phenomenon, our willingness to put huge effort into farming or grinding in video games for example. I think procrastination, at least in my case, is more rooted in a deep dislike for certain tasks, but that may be related to a feeling that those tasks are ultimately meaningless.I think some of this is coming from some musing I did while roaming around out west. The distances, harsh environments, and shear isolation the first explorers, the Indians, and later the settlers lived with are impressive. Most of us are never in a situation where there is no rescue if we have an accident or make a mistake, but that was the default condition for most of history. You went out to hunt, or to get water, and if you fell, or a sudden storm came up, or you stepped on a rattlesnake, or met a bear, you were entirely on your own.
Well I’m out. Powers back up for now. This will be one of the most physically and psychologically challenging weekends that I’ve faced in quite some time. Pray for Festus.
Godspeed sir!
God speed Festus. My plans for the weekend are pretty simple. Go to Cedar Point for the girlfriend’s birthday, watch the Browns game. Tonight is spin class, hot chicken, and hanging out with you lot.

just like so many other people I used to take seriously.
He’s also one of the guys who wrote about “State Capacity” libertarianism. Something like “Well the government is powerful and so we can use that power to secure liberty… Or something.
I’ve never been more anti-intellectual in my entire life than the last 6 months. Maybe polpot had a point.

Yeah, I’m coming up blank for a single word English equivalent. Although they most certainly exist here!

Fucktards?
That’s perfect, we need a word like that. Doesn’t exactly roll of the tongue for English speakers, though.
I say Faucite or Covidian
Ah, a utilitarian libertarian
A utilibertarian, if you will.
*takes bow*
Cowen renounced actual libertarianism in all but name quite some time ago. As long as he can enjoy a variety of ethnic food and an upper class lifestyle, expansive government is fine, particularly if it tries to do the things he things it should do. Like wash the masses.
true. Also he keeps promoting Matt Yglesias as some kind of intellectual worth are time. He probably has cocktail circuit brain worms.
Sadbeard an intellectual? Well, makes sense, I give you as exhibit A: The 1619 project and every editor and writer at the NYT.
He sits on the advisory board of Niskane with his good buddy Brad Delong.

I knew she was a poser, but really?
LOL. Nuff said.
Seriously? Oof…..I stopped paying attention to Cowen a while ago, but I wouldn’t have thought he’d have sunk that low.
JFC what a lying coward.
In most parts of the Western world, normal openings for restaurants, sporting events and workplaces are likely to lead to spiraling caseloads and overloaded hospitals
Assertion without evidence. Actually an assertion in the face of contradictory evidence, since reopenings and more cases haven’t correlated with overloaded hospitals. Even during the height of the pandemic many months ago, very few hospitals were overloaded.
Even during the height of the pandemic many months ago, very few hospitals were overloaded.
True, but in AZ this was because we had a statewide system for allocating patients to hospitals. Day to day during the peak season in AZ, there were always hospitals that were at capacity. Some other states had to do similar. But statewide, we always had enough beds.
“In most parts of the Western world, normal openings for restaurants, sporting events and workplaces are likely to lead to spiraling caseloads and overloaded hospitals”
It’s not like they haven’t said that before and it didn’t happen.
Never abandon the narrative. The new Soviet utopia will work shit time! We just need to kill more!
Move along, nothing to see here.
“The Allegheny County Elections Division announced Wednesday that 28,879 voters received incorrect ballots out of the 32,318 that were in the state’s ballot tracker as of Sept. 28.
The Division said the mailings are being corrected and that new ballots will be delivered starting Oct. 15, with most expected to be delivered the week of Oct. 19.”
“Voye [David Voye, Elections Division Manager] said that Elections Division staff were segregating ballots that were received from voters affected by the issue, and those will be set aside and reviewed following the election.”
That’s less than a 90% error rate. C’mon, be reasonable.
le sigh. Allegheny county is one of the swingiest of swing counties in an important swingy state this year.

In that sense, as things stand, there is no “normal” to be found. An attempt to pursue it would most likely lead to panic over the numbers of cases and hospitalizations, and would almost certainly make a second lockdown more likely. There is no ideal of liberty at the end of the tunnel here.
Don’t get me wrong: The Great Barrington strategy is a tempting one. Coming out of a libertarian think tank, it tries to procure maximum liberty for commerce and daily life. It is a seductive idea. Yet consistency of message is not an unalloyed good, even when the subject is liberty…
Liberty, in theory, is an appealing fiction, but don’t be fooled into putting yourself at a level of risk I find unacceptable.
You’re better off learning to love Big Nanny.
Fuck off, slavers.
I have had to say that twice now to Biden’s people spamming my text.
In that sense, as things stand, there is no “normal” to be found. An attempt to pursue it would most likely lead to panic over the numbers of cases and hospitalizations, and would almost certainly make a second lockdown more likely. There is no ideal of liberty at the end of the tunnel here.
Or, you know, the government can try to show the maturity of a grown adult and refuse to give in to panic.
That’s the problem with this mentality. It never has an end game. The only way you get past it is through it. But never going through it means permanent lockdown.
And the extension of the lockdowns to the flu season is well underway. And once you do this flu season, why not every flu season.
I don’t think this will change until there is a genuine economic/social catastrophe, and then only if people connect the dots. Which people are really bad at.
It would change if droves of politcians in favor of lockdowns got unemployed this election.
Not. Holding. My. Breath.
Question:
Would it be a good idea to have a Constitutional Amendment to require States to finalize their election processes no later than a certain date prior to a national election? I have a serious concern that allowing modifications to the process too close to the election creates dangerous levels of confusion. The Amendment could contain a clause to allow for mods in the event of serious natural disasters, with limitations on what can be changed and with clear timelines.
What possible problems could such an Amendment cause, and would any of them be worse than the effects of having a very uncertain process like we are experiencing now?
It wouldn’t matter. Judges are disregarding state law already because of the invisible ink pandemic exception to the Constitution. I see no reason why the invisible ink exception wouldn’t override an amendment.
I’ve noticed this phrase turning up in ever more interesting places.
*reaches for tin foil*
Look this virus is the smartest trickiest virus ever and it’s sentient and knows just how to trick us mere humans.
This virus magically behaves like no other virus in history, it’s novel!
I mean it sometimes follows instructions from corrupt officials and politicians, but it’s totally out of control!
That strikes me as the core of the agenda. The people pushing lockdowns want as much devastation as possible. They’re fully aware they’d never get their policies through on their merits. So, they want to turn the virus into an inflection point where their policies get accepted as part of the necessary recovery.
Johnson is an absolute fool signing on with this nonsense. It’s pretty much at odds with his entire electoral mandate.
The thought that it originated at the UN rather than at a Biden’s campaign staff meeting as I had thought is even more *barf*.
Build Black Better
How isn’t that racist as fuck? Oh, wait it said Back, not Black. Still stupid, but far less problematic.
The full version is “BUILD BACK BETTER BECAUSE WE INTENTIONALLY DESTROYED AS MUCH AS WE COULD TO NECESSITATE BUILDING BACK AT ALL”
Yeah, it’s just more thought-control focus-group bullshit phrasing from the Hivemind.
Our new Finance Minister started using “Build Back Better” in her first public statements right after Justin gave her the gig. It’s not just about green global tyranny, though — it’s priming the populace for unheard-of levels of public expenditure as an adjunct.
We really are just screwed.

Teachers Unions Associated With School Closures
nice alt text
I talked to one of those a few weeks ago and she was just giddy with excitement over the fact that she’s still getting paid, but not doing anything. I just said ‘I work from home’. She seemed to be a little perplexed with the concept that some people actually ‘work’ from home instead of just getting paid for not working.
Then she started onto something that seemed to be saying that whatever happens is 100% dependent upon the election. I didn’t have to guess what she was implying, and I just stood there poker face and a sudden realization that she might be talking to ‘one of them’ crept over her face and the smile suddenly faded and she says ‘I gotta go!’ and scurried off.
Hahaha. Byeeee.
Did you know any education or journalism majors in school?
So two of my most recent “worst” divorce cases are when an engineer marries a teacher. It’s a bully (the teacher) with the nit-picker.
I fucking hate teachers.
We have some kind of “throw more munnies at teh skools” thing on our ballot. Even though it is universally agreed that the schools have done a completely shit job with the pandemic, I fully expect it to pass, and that the parents I know who bitch endlessly about the schools will vote for it.
we have a school bond on our ballot. On the referendum it says “Your taxes will go up by $X amount” then below is a disclaimer: “we are legally obligated to say the above, but your taxes won’t actually go up because we anticipate paying off these other bonds and so it will offset”.
Yeah you can fuck off with that bullshit.
That BOC track got me in the mood for more…..
Dominance and Submission – https://youtu.be/kpKJUa6IoBs
I picked up a copy of Secret Treaties from Audio Fidelity back in 2016 when it was released – it’s a multi-channel SACD remastered from the quad tapes and it’s the real deal – crystal clear, no more muddy, muffled sound as is found on the CD and vinyl versions. Out of print and fetching $80 – $125 a copy on ebay.
https://www.amazon.com/Secret-Treaties-Blue-Oyster-Cult/dp/B01HW8EZSU
That has backwards satanic lyrics.
I have the vinyl. I never thought it sounded muddy or muffled.
Anyway, BÖC just released a new album, and this track deserves more attention:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iIdntHAhTv0
I had the vinyl too. Seemed OK to me as well.
All the early BOC studio albums have a muffled, muted sound, especially the bass and vocals (no clarity, hard to decipher). At least to my ears. Granted, I’ve been told I’ve have tin ears before but for the life of me I could never clearly hear the vocals/lyrics on most of the tracks on this album with ME262 being the worst. Listening thru speakers, anyway. I haven’t listened to the vinyl in years but I don’t recall it being any better than the CD versions. I may have to dust off the TT and give it a spin. Most of my listening is done using headphones these days.
I like that new song and will give a few more tracks a listen.
I’m mostly headphone these days too. I do that so as to not annoy the rest of the family.
In the old days I used to be quite the HiFi guy. However, I don’t even have turntable anymore.
Well It’s been approved. Tune in Tuesday for my Play By Play predictions of Election Night.

I’m attending a “corporate counsel symposium” and this morning’s topic is why social justice, I&D, environmental advocacy is so important for modern companies….
You should ask if wasting company money is now considered part of the fiduciary duty of corporations.
They addressed that specifically. “Risk mitigation isn’t wasteful”
HAHAHAHAHA.
Did you say “If risk mitigation isn’t wasteful, then surely we should pay everyone here 1Million and hour, to not risk one of us becomes disgruntled and blows up HQ?”
“Would you care to comment on the risk posed to companies by social justice, D&I, and similar, specifically in the context of admissions against interest in D&I training sessions where executives and managers state that they are racist, and also in the context of social justice programs that provide benefits or impose costs on explicitly racial or other grounds?”
“What risk to the company is being mitigated by environmental advocacy?”
I am currently pondering my options post-retirement for making some coin in a part-time/consulting role. One of those options would be to work with a plaintiff’s firm that does EEOC work, to help them target companies that have had D&I training or programs. I think they pose an enormous risk, if not done very carefully. Struggle sessions where executive admit to “implicit bias” would be a game-changer. Social justice by definition cannot be colorblind, as required by federal law. There’s money to be made here, and I see no reason why I shouldn’t wet my beak.
Take me with you!
My biggest problem is likely to be that I have been beating these EEOC law firms like a rented mule whenever they have come around my hospital. Not sure if they will take my enlightened view that the lawyer who gives you the hardest time when you are across the table from them is exactly the one you want to hire.

“45% of investors would vote against directors if the board wasn’t diverse enough”
“6% of investors think that race/ethnicity is irrelevant when selecting a board of directors”
I love the way polls and surveys now have predetermined outcomes just like climate models.
It’s so bad. Slide X: Even right wingers are on board (quote from UChicago economic prof saying the market should be where these issues are resolved)
Slide X+1: Here are all the ways the government is forcing companies to embrace this shit
Can’t argue with stats and surveys
Like onto a cattle car?
Far more than 55% of people don’t even know what that non-sense means.

Yes, just like that.
Back after the Obama admin tried to shove all those bullshit directives down everyone’s throat about Title IX and all that, we started having all these anti-sexual violence online classes. You had to watch videos and answer the questions after each video. There were no real wrong or right answers, but it was obvious which answer they wanted you to choose. It was all just a bullshit waste of time, like all the rest of the bullshit. Shovel ready jobs for people with no talent and not even brains to acquire any.
We now have a populace with more than 50% of people not being intelligent enough to just take care of themselves on their own. Feature, not bug.
Utter bullshit

First off, she’s adorable. Second, I get to feel dejected at how well she speaks Japanese as a second language. (For other Glibs, she’s Taiwanese.)
Gustave – For your Japanese education. She is calling up other members of AKB48 asking them to have a guest appearance on her youtube channel, The nice thing about this is she is calling both senpai and kouhai so the language changes. And she is essentially repeating the same set of requests. So you’ll get to hear it over and over again. And it’s got Japanese subtitles. So it’s acutally quite a useful learning video.
頑張って!
ありがとう! What a sweetheart. I’ll have to watch the rest later. Continuing to fall down on my studying, particularly without the regularity of weekly class.
On the plus side, Amazon.jp refunded the third party seller and shipping fees. I think it had to wait until the original expect delivery date expired even though they already had the package back. And I didn’t have to try customer service with my broken Japanese/Google translated miss mash!
My school does remote Japanese classes because of the plague. Class is $200 for 7 weeks. Times will be Eastern however. They do have scattered Saturday classes.

Shit just got real. The Rona might cause cut backs in train service!!
I’m not sure how bad a 95% drop in ridership is. It wasn’t like the old levels of use came anywhere close to paying for the train service. I wonder if they are also going to rethink the $1+B they are going to spend on the newest light rail boondoggle?
“I wonder if they are also going to rethink the $1+B they are going to spend on the newest light rail boondoggle?”
Sure they are, just like they’re going to eliminate all their useless diversity hires.

“Grab a pizza the action”
I feel like the former is more refined, but I like the wordplay of the latter.
PS – also hey, smart writer man UCS
I like “pizza the action”.
Neato ?
Pizza D’Action is the name of a legendary dive-bar pizza joint in my town, It’s called “Pizza D’s” by all the locals and several (me included) went for years without noticing the sign above the door actually says “Action.”
It’s also known for being in just the right spot at a Y where three streets come together that once every couple of years, someone takes a turn too fast at night and drives through the front window.
I almost missed this, and I’m so glad I came back in to see if Moj had replied to me down the page. Genuinely cool story.
I know this thread is dead as hell now, but just in case you come back, here’s a story about a car hitting the restaurant next to Pizza D’s, as far as I know the most recent crash in 2017. The joke around town was that the driver got lost trying to find Pizza D’s.

Whisky Sours are all about balance. 2 ounces of 100-proof Bourbon, half an ounce of 2:1 simple syrup, around 3/4-ounce of fresh lemon juice is what I like. Nice and astringent, sweet undertone without being cloying.
If you use premade sour mix, for anything, you’re a pleb, full stop.
Girly? Right. I used to be like you, straight liquor or nothing. I would even make fun of my friends who put ice on their scotch. Fortunately, I eventually realized what an asshole I was being.
Ummm, that would be ‘in’ their scotch. That would be some brutal scotch that ice cubes bounce off of…
When I drank bourbon, I would never have put anything in good bourbon, except a couple ice cubes. I don’t drink at all now, so it’s not an issue one way or other. I still love the stuff, it doesn’t love me.
a couple ice cubes – eewwww
I drink good bourbon straight up, too. But I also put it in my mixed drinks, because I love classic cocktails and I just don’t buy crap booze.
All cocktails are about balance. That looks pretty close to what I aim for in a whiskey sour.
3 oz barrel-aged rye or bourbon (the rye is a little sweeter)
1 1/4 oz lemon juice
1/2 oz simple syrup, maybe a touch more
I’ve been experimenting with a splash of maraschino liqueur. Jury’s out, but I’m leaning “not really an improvement”.
Rule of thumb: the better the booze, the less the mixers.
Broke open the bottle of single barrel Peerless bourbon I picked up during their distillery tour.
Damn fine bourbon, but still kinda regretting what I paid for it after “tasting” all of my end of tour samples, and half of my non-drinker wife’s.
Of course it’s not. Pizza is a bottom-of-the-totem-pole food. I’ll eat it if there’s nothing better around.
I’ll eat it if wife and I are both lazy and I can just throw it in the oven for 20 minutes and food!
And you expect us to take your opinion seriously?
Prepare the burning stake.
You write paeans to mayo so we know to disregard your food opinions.
Mayo, Miracle Whip, and Spin Blend each have their place in one’s condiment repertoire. Occasionally they can be interchanged.
Serious question here – where would Miracle Whip be preferable to actual mayo?
When you’re all out of mayo, eggs, and oil.
I prefer MW with salami and kielbasa sandwiches, post-Thanksgiving-day turkey sandwiches, and about half the time, deviled eggs. That one depends on my mood.
Hmm. I’m going to cordially disagree with you on the post-Turkey Day sammiches. I like mayo on those. Lots of mayo, and a little salt and black pepper.
Never tried it on salami. I can see how it might be good.
” prefer MW with salami and kielbasa sandwiches”
That’s a weird abbreviation for “mustard”.
I like mustard on some things. Those are not they.
Speaking of mustard, the WORST Reuben sandwich I ever had was in NYC. They put MUSTARD on it! Da noive.
Cranberry, Cream cheese & turkey Sammich! You’re welcome.
They put mustard on a Reuben? What the fuck?
Was this Reuben purchased out of the back of a Plymouth hatchback in a strip club parking lot at 3am?
“Was this Reuben purchased out of the back of a Plymouth hatchback in a strip club parking lot at 3am?”
That sounds oddly specific.
W 53rd & 7th Avenue at a very nice-looking deli.
I know, I couldn’t believe it, either. I didn’t know until I got to my table. I would’ve made a stink, but we were on a tight timetable.
Sheldon was selling mustard Ruebens for a while and wanted to know if you were one of his customers.
Wait, wrong place. Don’t want to accuse an innocent of something so heinous.
Mountain Dew is amazing.
Coke is better.
Not only this, but Mountain Dew from a Taco Bell soda fountain somehow manages to improve on the miracle drink.
Mt Dew is ESSENTIAL in driving across the country, especially straight through. A bottle of Jet Alert is also handy.
Whiskey sour – does that by definiton have to have the foamed egg white?
Optional but highly recommended.
WSJ Editorial
Twitter’s Partisan Censors
On what planet is the WSJ?
And nothing else happened.
Hoping politicians will do the right thing is a waste of time.
Maybe these outlets could put their weight behind a non-partisan Twitter competitor instead?
I read somewhere Twitter reversed course this morning. But am not on Twitter and didn’t confirm the story.
Has the WSJ published an article on the laptop yet?
If not. STFU, WSJ.
Jesus H Christ, the Dems really do get everyone playing from the same sheet of music, don’t they? They just all repeat the same phrases, chanting like cultists.
Yarp. Remember when they discovered “screed”? Suddenly every remotely conservative or narrative-unfriendly opinion articulated by anyone was a “screed”.
(Hey limey, don’t listen to CW: I dug your rap about Lincolnshire. Have been to Lincoln. Lovely: cathedral, Steep Hill.

*Ignores CW*
That was hilarious. I’m hoarse from laughing. WHAT?! What do you want, in the depths of your ignorance…
OFFS!!
This is what the NPC meme perfectly described. So perfectly that it had to be banned, of course.
That and “learn to code”. These bans all seem very arbitrary.
Arbitrary? Hardly. the principle is “You can’t make fun of the left”
For some reason my blood pressure is rising.
One mind spread across many bodies.
I’ve been giving some thought to the poor little Hunter narrative that’s going around.
They do have a point; like Chelsea Clinton, none of the Biden kids really had a chance. It’s pretty clear that daddy runs a corrupt enterprise and you do what he says or you suffer consequences. I strongly expect that the occasional outbursts of public rage and violence were very common in his home when his kids were < 16 years old.
We all imagine if faced with an emotionally abusive and corrupt father who sought to inveigle us into his schemes and to use us for his own benefit, we would act courageously and walk away rather than compromise our principles. Having stood up to my father on a matter of principle and having been disowned for it, I can tell you from personal experience that the practical exercise is not as easy as one would think. And my dad had little power to screw up my life; I was able to embark on a career and life independently rather quickly and easily.
It's quite likely that Hunter hates his dad (certainly the email to his daughter betrays a lot of bitterness). It's quite probable that he has no pride in himself, and the lack of self worth is a major factor in his depraved and self-destructive life-style.
Speaking for myself, I am very grateful that I wasn't born into the Biden family, and I feel sorry for the people who were unfortunate enough to enter the world with Joe Biden as a father.
Story, please? *gathers pillow and popcorn*
I will always maintain that Michael Jackson was not responsible for the things he did. I will also maintain that Janet Jackson was only successful in cutting Joe off because she was younger and a girl, and Joe didn’t pay attention or push her nearly as much.
I’m disinclined to go over what was ultimately a pathetic and stupid tale.
Don’t know about hating Dad, but those pictures were of a guy who really hates himself.
I agree with your assessment and said essentially the same to someone yesterday. I pity the guy.
I am very fortunate in that I had a father who is smart, well educated and empathetic. He is also the farthest thing from a coward you can imagine. That is very important.
My brother and I turned out pretty well I would say.
As do I.
However, when sober Hunter refused to pay child support that’s a different story.
I’m mixed. I see the point, but at some point a man has to stand up and do the right thing, regardless of his upbringing or challenges. Hunter strikes me as an eager participant in his father’s corrupt enterprises.
I don’t. He’s a scumbag.
Agreed. Joe appears to be a grade A sociopath.
As I recall, he lambasted Calvin & Hobbes, too. Monster is right.
Of course you realize this means war.
Still traveling, drove from VA to SC Monday, SC to Mobile AL Tuesday, returned to SC Thursday, driving home to VA today.
The lady checking me into the hotel on Monday told me there is a $25 fine for not wearing a mask in town, but she hasn’t heard of anyone getting harassed.
For SC and AL signs are ubiquitous, and compliance is around 70% (est).
We stopped at a rest area right before Tuskegee, and some 60 or so year old mask wearing black lady walked past my unmasked wife.
As she past me she loudly declared ” That’s the problem with this country, people not following the rules. And when you follow them people look at you all fucked up.”
Haven’t worn the mask except to get on the ship for work. as soon as we got to the room the Chief Mate took off his mask, so I did too. No funny looks or people avoiding talking to me.
Not sure if it means anything in the long run, but people might be tired of the never ending stupidity.
**waves as you drive by**
Sorry to hear that you had to encounter such an aggressive sheep.
I don’t know when I will next get the chance to be in the US but I keep thinking that I should get a Hannibal Lecter mask to wear when in public. If confronted over it I do a pretty good “resting psycho face” which I can augment with a low growl. Probably no need to even speak with that line up.
“How about Jim Crow laws? Should everyone have obeyed them, too?”
Or
“Why don’t you care about civil rights?”
Grrr, Buds oversold and don’t actually have a gun for me… The market is insane right now.
why bother? they’ll all get confiscated in a year
Uh, to be ready for the confiscations? Do I have to think of everything here?
I’ve had some luck lately with GrabAGun.com, as well as some of the smaller vendors.
But yeah. The market is insane right now.
good call on grabagun. *crosses fingers that this one will actually ship*
Fenix ammo just sent me an alert that they have their .45 training ammo back in stock.
At over $1.00/round. Nearly double what I paid back in March, I think. Can’t blame them, at all, for charging market price, but I just can’t bring myself to pay it.
What do words mean?
Richmond said, “He has not dodged the question. What he has said is he’s not going to answer the question, and I think that that is a difference.”
Richmond continued, “But if you’re talking about court-packing, court-packing is when you rush through unqualified judges, 50 judges on the circuit court, and you put not one African-American on the circuit court. And all of a sudden, you want to pretend that you care about poor people, minorities. Because you’re not showing those people in what you do. … And so, look, we will answer that question at the appropriate time. But the real thing is, we should not confirm a justice with 19 days to go before an election, and I believe the majority of the people in the country agree with that position.”
“we should not confirm a justice with 19 days to go before an election, and I believe the majority of the people in the country agree with that position”
He believes wrong then, as surveys show.
Also, there are way more than 19 days before a new potential president.
Once Biden is elected, the Dems will demand that Trump step down immediately and allow Biden to assume the presidency early. Sure it’s not constitutional, but that won’t stop them from acting like Trump is the most dangerous president ever.
They are in “Piss on your face and tell you its raining mode”. They aren’t even trying to hide the “we’ll redefine everything you say”.
It makes me sad because I think the Democrats so deserve to lose the election this year, and yet they will probably win.
That’s no shit. It is incredible that people gobble up whatever they are shoveling.
Guthrie – “Why won’t you denounce white supremacy?”
Trump – “I have many time. I do now. I denounce white supremacy and the KKK”
Guthrie – “But why do you refuse to denounce them?”
Welp, looks like that’s it for me. I know someone who tested positive for the COVID, and we both hung out with the same person over the past couple of days.
Nice knowin’ ya
can I have some of your stuff?
Oh noes, you only have a 99.9% chance of surviving if they managed to pass it on to you.
Sucks if you’re that one in a thousand.
Sucks because I was supposed to go over to their side of town on Sunday to watch the Browns/Steelers game (and to provide moral support, as his wife is a Yinzer).
Still may be going over with another friend over on that side of town (they came over here on Sunday to watch the game), but that’s up in the air now.
🙁
Won’t anyone think of the orphans?
Have my TSA grilling this afternoon to determine if I’m a good enough citizen to fly without taking off my shoes. Never mind that it’s pretty much the same shit I went through to obtain my work clearance, and they could just fucking exchange databases with the State Dept. Never mind that I was already placed in the “lowest risk” (LOL) category by the people that did my work clearance.
So efficiency!
how do your feet look?
That’s not the point, you know how much of a hassle it is to take off skis and ski boots?
Global Entry is totally worth it even if you don’t fly much. It’s just so much fun walking past the peasants queuing up for the ritual striptease…
What kinds of shit do they ask you?
Nothing. See below.
How long does it take?
What Sensei said. I don’t think I exchanged twenty words with my ‘interviewer’.
It took me about two hours, and I had my GE pass in the mail in about two weeks.
I was a little unusual, in that I just walked into the TSA office in the airport during a long layover, found it staffed, and I happened to have all the ID on me that I needed (Drivers License and Passport Card.)
Three minutes tops.
Spent more time waiting as the where I took it they had to stage the people. Only FedGov can combine a museum and CBP.

Wrong link. I meant to grab the NYC one.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alexander_Hamilton_U.S._Custom_House
I submitted my Global Entry app, paid my fee, and scheduled my interview in March. Then they shut it down, and haven’t reopened the Tucson office for interviews.
Fuck the TSA.
Looks like we’re going to fly to DFW for Thanksgiving. May try to do it there.
Still, fuck the TSA.
The “interview” is fiction. They’ve done the actual work before it with the documentation. All they do is confirm the paperwork and match your pictures.
It was an utter waste of time.
You just disclosed security procedures on a politically extremist forum frequented by people who have previously been investigated for terroristic threats made to a sitting Federal judge. You are not only not getting precleared, you are likely to end up on a no fly list.
XX just got told that she would not be allowed to buy a car until after her 18th birthday (several reasons), and that she could drive ours and pay for her own insurance, thus continuing to sock away the cash from her paycheck. She is distraught.
I am the bad guy in this situation. While I don’t like being the bad guy, I’m perfectly willing to be.
if she uses her own money buys a powerball ticked and wins like 50 mil, can you legally prevent her from getting her own car?
you can’t legally buy a powerball ticket before you’re 18.
lame. now that I think about it it is the same in Romania with lottery tickets, only you can buy it but can’t get the money if it wins.
Yes. She’s not 18 and can’t legally sign contracts.
This is a common misconception/misstatement. Minors can sign contracts. The problem is that they can also generally void the contract. She could buy the car, the issue she would run into is that she would be able to void the contract so no dealership would sell it to her. She might well be able to find a private seller who would be willing to do so though, if she has cash.
Color it a misstatement. I know a minor can sign anything. Nobody in their right mind would enter into a contract with a minor. Thus, the net effect is the same.
I am not just being pedantic, the net effect is not exactly the same because of what I said in my last sentence, someone with a beater for sale might very well sell it to her. You’d still be able to keep her from insuring the car though.
why not?
See answer below.
Socking away money at that age is a huge priority.
“Compound interest is the most powerful force in the universe.”
Teaching kiddo that almost every decision you make has financial impacts that ripple through your life will be a big benefit down the road.
Good on you for trying.
compound interest… like the 0.05% on my savings account?
SP 500 or Small cap ETF. Vanguard is my go to but there are other low cost alternatives out there.
Savings accounts are dead and will remain so.
My savings account is an emergency fund, instant liquidity is what I most want out of it.
Heh, interest rates on savings are at or near inflation rates now, aren’t they?
She has a “high yield” money market savings account most of her paycheck goes into (no, we didn’t MAKE her do that). However, I don’t know what the interest rate is and I doubt it’s above 1%.
She could pay for a car in cash, but I believe that is a foolish purchase when we have a car that is not being used and she can drive it on days when the weather is not inclement.
She is afraid that if she doesn’t have a car on her 18th birthday, she won’t be able to move out and will not accept that she can get a car WHEN she moves out. it’s not like she’s going to be able to move without using our pickup anyway. I want her to have a solid rock of savings before she moves out and left over after purchasing a car.
Cars in her price range will still exist in July.
When I moved out everything I needed fit in my Chevy Beretta. (Which I bought via taking over the car loan from my older brother).
Cars in her price range will still exist in July.
*checks Harris/Biden platform*
Aren’t you the optimist.
I have to be, for the sake of my sanity.
If I had kids, I’d very selfishly like to share such responsibility with a gal like you because I imagine could be the good guy, the pushover, the cool shitlord dad.
Generally speaking, I am #MeanMommy.
Very rarely, I will be rewarded with a “You were right, Mom.”
Alternatively, I am also willing to say, “I was wrong.” This also rarely happens.
Hide your children
Looks like the dems are getting a another super majority in Jan.
:shakes head:
8 year old can’t legally consent to anything else in their life. Can’t make the choice to not go to school. Can’t do any of that. But they can make the decision to get a sex change if they want.
Lower the drinking age to 7!
Who in their right mind will vote for this lunacy?
Wildly self-aware quote from a movie reviewer in the Austin Chronicle:
“50-50 journalism – the idea that all sides of an issue need to be covered with the same degree of credulous questioning – is killing us.”
In a far- left weekly that has not once run anything that could be described as 50-50.
Self-UNaware
I don’t think anyone advocates for that. The point is that you can’t both have an agenda and be considered a fair source to get information from. Newspapers have always been party organs.
Exactly that. The great dumbing down has led to younger generations unable to fathom the possibility that anyone else might just be able to read an alternative viewpoint while being completely cognizant of the inherent biases therein. It’s a highly autistic state of affairs.
Watching Ghost In The Shell SAC, I never understood what they meant by “autistic mode”. This can’t be it.
Not putting ‘Murderous’ in front of the ‘Nazi’ affixed to every Republican is being bias towards Republicans.
i can’t honestly believe noone anywhere has brought up the fact that the [son of the] cosponser of the harshest crime bill we’ve ever passed was smoking crack everywhere scot free while so many minorities are rotting in prison. Oh wait yes I can.
What exactly, pray tell, does the Trump Campaign do, exactly. In exact, precise, exact terms.
Because they sure don’t seem to make ads out of the plain, simple shit that ads need to be made from.
I’m baffled by the lack of easily made ads consisting of little more than actual footage of Biden and Harris being idiotic or repellent. Hell, why isn’t there an ad of Tulsi killing her chance to be the Presidential nominee at the first Democrat debate?
So, in The Bestest Timeline, after Trump wins a megalandslide election both popularly and in the College, we learn there was no Trump Campaign, he spent literally nothing to win, against Biden’s Chinese Billions.
(Biden’s Chinese Billions, in the snack aisle, only 150cal per 1oz serving.)
