IFLA: The “Is it Boring in Here, or is it Just Me?” Edition of the Horoscope for the Week of November 8

by | Nov 8, 2020 | Advice, IFLA | 184 comments

So the skies crap all over everything last week and then this week pretend like there’s absolutely nothing going on whatsoever.  Thanks stars.  I really appreciate it.

But seriouly, look at this twaddle:  The sun is in Scorpio.  Yes, and?  That happens every year at this time, so what?  Mars retrograde in Aries?  Yes mom, I know that being stupidly belligerent will get me in trouble.  Tell me something I don’t know.  Oh, Mercury and Venus in Libra?  Keeping cool will improve my chances with the ladies?  What ever would I do without your advice?  The moon is in Leo?  Well, at least it’s not completely generic pablum but warning about increased bitchiness and moodiness at this particular moment in time isn’t exactly divine revelation.

The cards are still saying that things are going to suck.  And suck bigly.

Scorpio:  The Fool reversed – Negligence, absence, distribution, carelessness, apathy, nullity, vanity.

Sagittarius:  Wheel of Fortune reversed – Increase, abundance, superfluity

Capricorn:  The Moon reversed – Instability, inconstancy, silence, lesser degrees of deception and error.

Aquarius:  Knight of Cups reversed – Trickery, artifice, subtlety, swindling, duplicity, fraud.

Pisces:  Ace of Wands –  Creation, invention, enterprise, the powers which result in these

Aries:  Three of swords – Removal, absence, delay, division, rupture, dispersion, despair, heartbreak

Taurus:  4 of Coins reversed – Suspense, delay, opposition.

Gemini:  3 of Coins reversed – Mediocrity, puerility, pettiness, weakness.

Cancer:  Page of Wands –  Anecdotes, announcements, evil news, indecision and instability

Leo:  Strength – Power, energy, action, courage, magnanimity, complete success and honors

Virgo:  The High Priestess reversed – Passion, moral or physical ardour, conceit, surface knowledge.

Libra:  The Star reversed – Arrogance, haughtiness, impotence.

Funny you post a Crowder bit.

I just had this discussion over at TOS. Basically, I argue that traditional media just stabbed itself in the heart and is over and done with. The bias era is long over and the propaganda era is here. And people are not paying attention to them anymore.

As evidence I pulled forward louder with crowder. He is pulling in 5 to 8 million viewers. Meanwhile, MSNB flagship host Rachel Maddow gets anywhere from 2 to 5 million.

One of the Tony sock puppet masters argued at all of the right-wing YouTube channels like Louder with Crowder are under the control of secret billionaires. I counter argued with 5 to 8 million viewers.

Rachel Maddow makes $7 million a year to pull in 2.5 million viewers for her 5-day a week show on cable tv. Louder with Crowder has an audience that is Maybe double that? I don’t think he’s under anybody’s control.

Traditional media seems to understand this. Shows like this that are relying on the big tech companies like Google are running into problems with demonetization and blocking.

Meanwhile, people like Adam carolla who went the podcast route and have an independent revenue stream give a big middle finger to everybody and say whatever they want. I assume that at some point the video segment will shake out the same way.

I have no idea what that means for the republic. We already have vastly different base assumptions and base sets of facts. When is the big for regular networks and the cable news networks die and become completely irrelevant, I wonder where we will get our common narrative? It will be interesting to see how it shakes out.

      • C. Anacreon

I’m more concerned that since they’re all melding together anyway, broadcast news will become just one single state-approved broadcast. And anyone who thinks those programs are not being honest will be roundly denounced on other media, and their social credit score will drop so far they will be barred from using Uber automated driver rides or the better quality food distribution stations. Our 90% taxes will be going to a good cause, though, for our patriotic battle against Eastasia.

      • Ownbestenemy

It pretty much already melded. Look at narratives that run in geographically separated areas that say the same exact news bylines.

I know its because they just pull from a newswire but that newswire (AP, UPI, etc) it what is controlling the news and people still believe their local news at 5 and 10pm is independent.

      • Viking1865

“We already have vastly different base assumptions and base sets of facts.”

In the old days, there were competing, openly partisan newspapers. They would even sometimes be named things like “The LOCAL CITY NAME Democrat”

One of the main problems with the media space is that half the country wants to pretend that “their media” is unbiased, neutral, and fact based, and sneers at the other half of the country for openly consuming media that is nakedly partisan.

      • Viking1865

In the 1876 Election it was unofficially acknowledged by the Republicans that there was widespread fraud. They gave the Democrats major political concessions in return for them swallowing the shit sandwich.

If the Democrats allow a major election security bill, where the laws and policies of say Florida are imposed on the nation as a whole, to be written by Republicans in Congress, and order the Democrats in Congress to vote for it in huge numbers, and signed by Trump in early January, that would be an analogous situation to the Compromise of 1877. That would be the Democrats trading Biden/Harris for being unable to pull this shit again in the future. That would be a Compromise of 2021.

The current party line is the same one that the Dems have been running since the modern fraud era began back in 1860: there is no election fraud, it’s racist to say there is, and any attempt to have secure elections is double racist.

I also think there’s an appreciable difference between 1876 and 2020 in terms of the stakes. There were less than 60,000 federal employees in 1876. In 2020 there are roughly 7 million employees, contractors, and granted positions with another 2 million in the military and another 2 million in the postal service. It didn’t really matter if Hayes or Tilden won in 1876, not the way it does today.

      • Homple

Biden being gracious doesn’t mean a damn thing. As his mental deterioration proceeds he won’t be able to control his bladder, much less the vindictive wannabee totalitarians in his party.

I always liked the original Jeopardy guy from the 1960s. Art Somebody (Fleming? Can’t remember right now, too lazy to look it up). He treated it like the contestants were defending their PhD theses. Tougher categories and questions, too, things like Greek history instead of celebrity gossip trivia.

      • rhywun

I liked that show Trebek did before Jeopardy. Something about psyching out your opponent in a sound booth. And it had the same music as Card Sharks before Card Sharks stole it.

      • C. Anacreon

I also remember Trebek hosting a game show called “Wizard of Odds”. I can’t recall if that was the same game show where contestants rolled craps with big fuzzy dice, or if that was another Trebek show.

And now I’m fondly remembering Bill Cullen, who probably hosted more failed game shows than anyone, but never finally found the big winner like Trebek did. Cullen was quite the smart ass, but so affable no one seemed to mind his insults. He had great eyeglasses too.

      • Ted S.

The fuzzy dice show was High Rollers.

Cullen was the original host of The Price Is Right.

A really underrated Cullen game show was Blockbusters.

      • C. Anacreon

My favorite Bill Cullen show was “Eye Guess”.

I didn’t know Cullen was the original Price is Right host. I do remember when the Bob Barker version debuted, for the first few seasons it was called “The New Price is Right”.

      • Hyperion

“Interesting, he’s speculating that they’ll restrict ownership by cracking down on gun owners that also receive medical marijuana which is technically verboten I guess.”

Long expected. They’re going to just keep adding to their list of banned people, until it’s almost everyone.

It’s been the plan for a long time, it’s just that they lost the house and senate and then Trump got in their way for a few years. So you would expect they’ll start right back where they left off.

      • blackjack

They’ve been doing that out here for quite a while. They have teams of cops roll up to houses and “request” that you turn over any guns you may have. They cross reference various lists like DV restraining orders, 5150 orders, felony convictions, etc. to background check requests. KNOCK, KNOCK! Are there any guns in the house? Mind if we take a look? Of course they’re all SWAT looking, being worried about guns and all.

Nobody has any love for the Lautenberg Amendment? That POS law makes any conviction, including misdemeanors, for “domestic abuse” a total lifetime forfeiture of your 2A rights. Except the law is so vague and so misused by prosecutors the idea of DA is stretched past all sense of reality.

An example from my own life experiences. A Soldier hosts a Super Bowl party and is a strong fan of one of the teams. One of the guests and he are doing high volume non stop shit talking during the game. One of the jabs used was “I’m gonna fucking kill you.” to the other shit talking guest. His neighbor, one of the proto-Karens, calls the police with a noise and DA complaint. The cops show up and tell them to keep it down some. A cop asks if there are other people in the house and he says “yes” and mentions that it includes his wife and kids, plus some other wives and kids. Then it turns into “Sir, please step out the door with your hands raised.” Because the neighbor said a potential for DA somebody was going to be arrested. The other Soldier we were saying it to each other, Cops don’t care. Soldier 1 is arrested in front of his wife and kids.

Fast forward to court. Prosecutor is “tough on DA”. Wife, kids, Soldier 2 are all willing to testify on Soldier 1 behalf. Prosecutor knows he won’t get a felony conviction so says if you plead guilty to a misdemeanor charge I’ll let you go with a judges warning. Soldier 1 takes the deal against lawyers advice.

Next thing cops show up and seize his firearms because under the LA he can no longer posses them. Prosecutors minions show up at Ft X with a court order to never issue a military owned firearm to Soldier 1 because of the LA. Military lawyers research and yep, no issue military firearms. Upshot Soldier 1 is tossed from the Army. The family, who was never threatened, now has a near unemployable male head, guy had about 15 years in and lost all that future retirement.

What other Constitutionally recognized right can you lose for a misdemeanor? You can be damned sure the “pre-Harris administration” will be using the LA and the Harris Admin will double down.

Obama already tried it once by using the VA to give the names of people with PTSD to them, in order to “protect” them by the police “temporarily” removing firearms. (2010-2011 timeframe)

      • Homple

They let it out because the R. in charge of the overseeing commission said they were all just simple mistakes.

2016 – it was a more innocent era.

Got little chuckle out of me.

You know that Stalin quote that goes, “The people who cast the votes decide nothing. The people who count the votes decide everything.”? Facebook’s crack fact checkers say it is missing context. You see, Stalin wasn’t talking about general elections.

    • Stinky Wizzleteats

They’re fact-checking 70 year Stalin quotes based on vague ambiguities now? These people need to FOAD.

      • blackjack

They’re worried antifa might topple some Stalin statues, just when they’ve gained new meaning.

        Find Other Asexual Demons?

    • rhywun

This is because Stalin didn’t care about counting votes. For him, elections were acts of social mobilization and political affirmation, and the results were entirely fabricated.

Oh OK. That makes it better.

One more tiny thing to cling to: they’ve finished taping another season of BattleBots!!!

Don’t know if bread will remain available, but we’ll at least have circuses.

I have definitely been feeling superfluous, of late.

  30. The Late P Brooks

I started flipping through the paper, a little while ago. I had to stop when I got to the ecstatic “Biden’s Message of Unity” headline. The roaring in my ears was overwhelming.

    • Mostly Peaceful JaimeRoberto

The whole idea of unity is BS. If everyone were unified, why have elections?

      • Hyperion

Their version of unity is ‘hey, we want unity, so agree with us on everything or else’. Umm, nope, gonna straight up pass on that generous offer!

  31. Scruffy Nerfherder

    Jesus Christ

Frat brother on FB posts this NPR article:

His comment: “I have no idea what the hell is with these people.”

My response: “Maybe they have different priorities than you do.”

    His response:

Oh that is definitely clear. They were voting for “American carnage.” They were voting for little kids in cages. They were voting for sucking off Putin and Xi Jinping. They were voting for making the top 1 percent even richer, while subsidizing companies poisoning the soil, water, and air. They were voting for a man who cheated on at least one of his pregnant wives, and who regularly stiffed vendors and lenders to his businesses. They were voting for a guy who paid less income taxes than a McDonald’s enployee.

And my final comment: “Yes, yes, my side is holy and theirs is demonic. One thing you have made clear is that you have no respect and significant antipathy for people who disagree with your politics and that would include me. I’m going to refrain from interacting with you on FB in the future. But as parting advice, I’d like to recommend The True Believer by Eric Hoffer. Read it like I did not only as something to understand others with, but as a source of self-reflection.”

    • rhywun

You can’t have a serious discussion with someone whose brain is that scrambled.

      • Scruffy Nerfherder

No you cannot. He’s in his bubble and has his reinforcement mechanisms in place.

I’m glad this place has its disagreements. It can get a little echo-chamber like at times, but I think that’s probably a natural outgrowth of one political party apparently trying to burn the system down.

We’re stuck choosing the lesser of two evils simply because one of them is declaring war on all dissenters.

      • Viking1865

I think for me, the last four years of political discussion is terribly annoying because, since Trump is not part of the Inner Party, all the evil things that the US government does were revealed by the media as things Trump does.

Trump is no worse than Obama or Bush, and that’s entirely the horrifying thing about what the American Presidency and the American federal government has become. But any time someone brought that up, the term “whataboutsim” was deployed by worthless charlatans.

      • Hyperion

“Trump is no worse than Obama or Bush”

Yes, but Obama and Bush were both a lot worse than Trump.

I missed the part where Trump invaded 2 countries and started a never ending war and then used the deep state to go after private citizens. I must have been drunk that entire time, it’s possible.

    • Hyperion

“They were voting for sucking off Putin and Xi Jinping.”

I’m pretty sure Jinping would approve of most of the democrat’s platform.

      • Scruffy Nerfherder

        It doesn’t even make sense.

      • Hyperion

Doesn’t have to, it sounds good to the rest of the group and they get some warm and fuzzy good feelz. Isn’t that what the good life is all about? Be one of the cool kids, it makes you super smart!

      • limey

His flawed logic appears to be that The Narrative signaled to him that Xi is bad, and he knows the BOM is bad, so they must be involved sexually somehow? Idk.

I wonder how many folks like that would have any idea about the plight of the Uyghurs, the Tibetans, the Fahlun Gong (sp?), and the horrible realities for many others living in the CCP panopticon, if it wasn’t for the gatekeepers of the bubble letting it be told (in part) on their networks.

      • limey

*followers of Falun Gong ffs “the Fahlun Gong” make a no sense

      • Hyperion

There’s many of the left here who openly support Xi’s systems of oppression, especially a social credit score. You know, because they’re good right thinkers and those policies will never affect them, just the rednecks and the bad people.

I don’t think any of them would come out and say they support the Uyghurs in camps. But just change the world Uyghurs to deplorables and Trump supporters and they’re all of the sudden right in.

      • limey

Yep. There’s no rational, reasoned, principled thought behind it.

Although, The Narrative is falling apart now, and I can see the vanguard of the revolutionaries already turning on these useful idiots who have outlived their usefulness. Their names will also go on the list.

  32. The Late P Brooks

They were voting for a guy who paid less income taxes than a McDonald’s enployee.

    Zing!

    • Viking1865

I think what irritates me the most about them is they are so convinced they are correct when they say the dumbest fucking things.

I don’t know if Donald Trump is a “good” businessman or not, by some stupid standard. What I do know is that entities he owns have paid more in tax to the government then probably every single President combined.

      • Hyperion

It’s group think, without the trouble of actually doing the thinking part. Just turn on MSNBC, they’ll tell you what to think, that way you won’t have to hurt your brain.

  33. The Late P Brooks

I don’t know if Donald Trump is a “good” businessman or not, by some stupid standard. What I do know is that entities he owns have paid more in tax to the government then probably every single President combined.

And created added value to the economy, and jobs, and opportunities, and and and…

But kindly Uncle Joe has devoted his life to a selfless mission of public service!
