Bella walks me here daily. A dog friendly beach, let’s see.

The Big Lake

Some dune grass, and the local pot shop is called Dune Grass, go figure.

Windy, pretty,

Wind Waves!

The next photos are taken with a Kodak Pixpro AZ421, much better than my phone.

Manistee Lighthouse

Action!

Even more

The Big Propeller

Bluffs to the North

Again, this area has a lot to offer in the way of photography, and as Winter comes on, all this will change again, and I’ll be standing in a blizzard, taking pictures.

Long swim

Til next time, Cheers!

    Cool pics

    • blackjack

Looks like there’s a whole bunch of people with half melted faces in Wisconsin.

      • blackjack

It wrecks a joke if you explain it, but the sign in the last pic says Wisconsin 54,200 strokes.

      • J. Frank Parnell

That sounds like it will take more than four hours.

  2. westernsloper

    Looks windy. Love the lighthouse.

    • Yusef drives a Kia

I blew my closeup shots, too close! must do them again….

  3. rhywun

Love the surf pics. Very different from the south shore of my home Great Lake (Ontario) – prolly because orientation and wind direction.

    • Yusef drives a Kia

thanks, very much, the prevailing wind decides, I await the freeze, the pictures should be awesome,

      • rhywun

You’ll surely get an ice storm or two. Those will make amazing pics.

      • Yusef drives a Kia

I have some very interesting Ideas, let’s say I’m not afraid of Ice or Water…

    • blackjack

I went to my grandpa’s house in Meqoun WI and there really weren’t any waves there, maybe 6″ tall and pure whitecaps. He had the lake in his back yard. Yusef’s pics look like a particularly windy day, maybe.

      • Yusef drives a Kia

It gets Bigger, you’ll see, promise,

      • Yusef drives a Kia

I will plan, and dress, including life jacket, and plan again, and go do some Danger shots, maybe…

      • blackjack

That’ll be really cool. Crashing waves make for dramatic pics.

      • The Gunslinger

All of the beaches I have been to on Wisconsin side of lake michigan are rocky. All of the beaches on the Michigan side are very sandy.

      • Yusef drives a Kia

        Glaciers will do that,

      • blackjack

My grandpa’s shoreline was mostly a cliff about four feet tall. It was late summer and pretty chilly, so we didn’t spend a lot of time out there.

      • Yusef drives a Kia

I’m actually seeking out the Cold and harsh places here, I’ve done the Desert Southwest, I want Tundra! and Frozen Lakes!

And boy, are you ever going to get it.

        I want Tundra!

I hate to burst your bubble but I think he is in the other M State.

      • Tundra

        I’m mobile.

Happy to see you enjoying our world, Yusef!

        @ Tundra, I can’t wait, I’m ready..

      Lake Huron rolls, Superior sings
In the rooms of her ice-water mansion
Old Michigan steams like a young man’s dreams
The islands and bays are for sportsmen
      And farther below Lake Ontario
Takes in what Lake Erie can send her
And the iron boats go as the mariners all know
With the gales of November remembered

      • rhywun

I was six years old when that was playing on the radio constantly. I was probably in my late teens or early twenties when I got clued in on what it was actually about.

      • blackjack

We had a shipwreck at the beach I grew up on. Eventually, they salvaged most of it and made the rest into a reef. It was alleged to be responsible for the sometimes huge surf we got there. It was called the La Janelle. I was really bummed when they flattened it, it was omnipresent in my early childhood.

I read some of the replies.

I’ve heard all that shit before. The “you’ll be quiet when you’re on a ventilator” and the like. It was wrong then, it’ll be wrong this time too.

  5. LemonGrenade

I really love visiting Michigan in the summer. Never had the guts to try it when it was cold, though.

    • Yusef drives a Kia

It’s not cold, yet, I’ll post when it is,

    • PudPaisley

Upper Michigan is stunningly beautiful in the winter, especially the snow belt areas to the west and north in the UP. The winters can be long and harsh, though.

      • LemonGrenade

We spent time in Copper Harbor and thereabouts for two years running during the summer. Love the UP. In the summer. I tend to retreat indoors if it’s below 30F.

      • PudPaisley

That is an awesome area. I plan on doing a 3 day snowmobile backpack trip this winter, and we’ll spend a day around Copper Harbor.

My Grandparents and Mom grew up in the UP, and my parents retired up there. I like to ski and snowmobile up there in winter, but I pick and choose the times I go based on weather. I got no use for doing those things anymore when it gets below 0. The rest I can dress for. Surprisingly, you don’t really get cold snowmobiling unless temps are below 0.

Oh, and your summer trip sounded awesome. I would love to do something like that, but I never get summers off due to a landscaping business. The bonus is at least I get to spend everyday outside in beautiful environments.

      • LemonGrenade

The only time we can really travel is when the kids aren’t in school, but since I’ve worked remote for ages, when they do hit summer vacation, we go hog wild. Our “Escape 2020” summer vacation hit fourteen states, with stops at Mt Rushmore and Yellowstone included. We were gone so long, the town sent someone from public works to check up on us because we hadn’t used water or sewer at the house in two months.

If you don’t get summers off, I would heartily recommend the Florida Everglades as a winter vacation. We spent Christmas break there last year, and it was absolutely amazing. Seventy degree weather on Christmas day, double rainbows, and I got to see alligators and so much wildlife. I’m dying to go back.

      • PudPaisley

I have a childhood friend who has a commercial fishing boat in the Keys, but spends a lot of time in the winter months just chilling out down there. I’m hoping to spend a couple weeks down there this winter or next. I have an open invite any time I want to go. I’m itching to go fishing, snorkeling, and scuba diving down there.

My biggest problem is finding reliable help to cover my part of the snow removal route in winter. My main guys are good, but haven’t had reliable part timers in several years. Really puts a cramp on my winter plans sometimes.

      • LemonGrenade

If you can get the chance, I highly recommend it. We spent a week at Flamingo Point campground and had the time of our lives. Hope you can find the reliable part timers that will give you a chance at a decent vacation.

Good stuff. I’m gonna have to explore them some more.

      Congrats on the new job.

I’m killing time in an office where the boss is an asswipe so the atmosphere here blows. Everyone unhappily working. Glad I’m nuking this job when the contract is up. Thanks for pics, Yusef. Lightening the morning.

    • rhywun

I’ve been getting an up-close lesson in what “micromanagement” is lately. OMG I hate it so much.

      • straffinrun

That breathing over the shoulder stuff is bad. This boss insists and doing parts of my job for me and is doing it slower and incorrectly. Idiot.

      • rhywun

It’s because they have someone breathing down their neck and they don’t trust you.

        Fucking toxic.

Nine years ago, this time of the year, I looked east across Lake Michigan. Very similar in appearance. That was a sad day for me, had just been to my brother’s funeral in Waukegan.

Today, on the other hand was better, cleaning up bee equipment. Vacuuming out bees, 1000s alive and not happy. Got stung 2X, in December. Got everything cleaned up, ready for next year and more bee stings. Life goes on.

    • Fourscore

I’ve got a variety of garden seeds but they do better outside. If you want to start garden plants inside, like Mar/April I’d be happy to send tomatoes/peppers/cabbages, that kind of stuff. Got apple seeds but I’m not sure they are viable.

I do have about 15 apple trees sprouting in the window, hopefully some of those will make it outside.

      • Yusef drives a Kia

not Apples, but I can grow the others now, my entire house is now a grow room, just need more plants

      • Fourscore

latvia2112 at the yayhoo place. I’ll put some in the mail, whatever varieties I have. For ex, several pepper, different tomato, etc. Bigger seeds, watermelon, squash?

  11. Count Potato

“For straight couples, there is one key difference between sex for the male and for the female: a woman gets a penis inserted into her while a man gets to insert his penis into someone else. That’s all nice and good. Sex is pleasurable for both genders. But from what I’ve discovered, only one gender has to save room in her body if a penis is to go into it — meaning that sometimes, if you’ve eaten a hearty meal, there isn’t enough room for a penis.

Sure, women can eat and then have sex. But they really can’t eat a lot. You know the saying “You can always make room for dessert”? Well, you can’t always make room for a dick. Especially if you’ve eaten dessert.”

That’s why supermodels subsist on mostly individual M&Ms.

    • rhywun

      I’ll sit this one out.

    • limey

Sometimes I’m just too full to have sex. I don’t know for sure if this is something other girls experience or just me, because I’ve never heard any of them discuss it. Maybe it’s supposed to be kept secret among us girls, information so sensitive that we cannot risk releasing it in conversation. Or maybe I’m actually the only one who gets too full to be able to have sex, and if that’s the case, then pretend this never happened.

Perhaps she’s “eating” dessert wrong. Kinky.

OT: Giuliani may be a dolt, but his closing statement in Michigan tonight confirmed all my biases. Called out the covidians, called out cancel culture, called out the GOP “we’ll set a meeting to discuss creating a committee to tackle this issue” mentality.

It was refreshing to hear, to be quite frank.

Also, I was the only person without a mask on at the gun club. That was a bit disappointing. The silver lining is that I heard multiple people asking one another “can you do that?”

I respect signs where they are posted. There was no sign. Thus, yes I can walk around the gun range without a mask.

    • straffinrun

That new “Empires of New York” tv show purports to show Guiliani as a crusading prosecutor who crippled the NY Mafia families.
[Probably did more crime busting than Teddy Roosevelt did]. Then he goes on to be mayor of NYC and cleans up its crime wave and decay. then comports himself well after 9/11. T.R. parlayed less than that into eventually becoming president. I guess Cheney stood in Guiliani’s way in 2004, but what about 2008?

      • Chipwooder

Couple of things stood in his way: 1)war fatigue – there was that famous moment in the debate when he got very huffy when Ron Paul challenged him on the probability that previous American foreign adventures spurred the 9/11 attacks. It drew attaboys from a certain type of Republican voter, but enthusiasm for the war had already been waning even within the GOP. In retrospect I think it’s pretty clear that embracing the GWOT did him no favors, particularly since McCain the God of War was in the race to scoop up those voters anyway 2)He was too New York for a party that generally trends rural, southern, and socon. There were the pictures of him in drag, etc. 3)He’s not the most likeable or charismatic guy around.

      • Chafed

        4) He waited for the Florida primary before making an effort to win or place in a state.

For me,, what breaks a person isn’t the cold. Its the grey. Its relentless. The great lakes dim the light of whatever you give a shit about. Then, in April or May you feel sun again, and life is good.

Its the time of year I wonder why I ever moved back from Texas to Buffalo.

      • The Bearded Hobbit

We’re “wintering over” in Montana and the grey and darkness are starting to wear on us. Dark at 1630 and still dark at 0730 the next morning. Temps around freezing and grey skies but no snow. I’m beginning to think that a northern NM winter isn’t quite so bad.

  15. straffinrun

If you were going to do all these aggressive actions to limit the vid spread, shouldn’t you explain exactly how you weighed the costs involved before you implemented them? “We recognize that suicides, preventable disease and addiction deaths will increase at approximately *this* rate. Overall we expect a net of X number of lives saved, however.”

Governors like Newsom and Cuomo did absolutely nothing of the sort. In any other setting besides government, that type of leadership regarding risk management and persuasion of underlings gets you canned in a heartbeat.

      • Gustave Lytton

~2.8M total annual deaths / 12 * seasonal fudge factor = math checks out

Oh wait, is that excess Covid caused deaths only?

    • Yusef drives a Kia

Silly, they don’t have to answer like real companies do,

      • straffinrun

Not true. Look at all those Coke commercials claiming Pepsi gives you AIDS.

    • blackjack

Dude, they banned outdoor dining here. They have not been able to explain any rationale for it, either. There’s no science or studies or anything, they just up and thought, ” I know, let’s ban outdoor dining!” And then did it. They’re in court trying to justify it right now. The judge is demanding some form of science to justify it. It ain’t never gonna come. There is none. They asked the county Health Nazi for any form of evidence and she said, ” I don’t have that here” At the fucking announcement of the new ban! Right before thanksgiving, they outlawed dining in restaurants. Fucking evil.

      • straffinrun

I agree. They had no explanation beyond simplistic slogans. I’m just saying that you could explain to a fence sitter the point I made and it might get traction.

      • blackjack

Well, those 250k deaths from the ‘vid? They did not bump the normal amount of deaths by 250k. Turns out, those deaths came from the normal numbers of Heart disease, cancer and whatever lese deaths happen every year. We should have had a normal amount of deaths plus 250k, instead, we had a normal amount of deaths. The whole fucking thing is fake. The people who’ve died were the same people who would’ve died anyway.

If that didn’t get traction, nothing will. It’s become a religion. Pick a side and stick with it.

      • straffinrun

Eventually the lunacy will be exposed. I’m just trying to snag anyone I come across that doesn’t really follow this stuff.

      • Libertesian

We should have had a normal amount of deaths plus 250k, instead, we had a normal amount of deaths.

What is your source for this claim?

FWIW, I’ve been watching the Human Mortality Database (HMD), and if you believe their numbers, the US has experienced around 335,000 excess deaths in 2020 YTD compared to the average deaths during 2016-2019. They provide a pretty graphical tool here, as well as the numbers used to generate the graphs.
Here is a screenshot of the graph showing 2020 excess deaths by week regardless of cause.

  16. Yusef drives a Kia

cooler tomorrow, 3 degrees cooler, thats all you got? meh…

    • PudPaisley

I grew up on the other side of the lake in Kenosha, WI. Drove along the lake shore almost every day going to and from work. You should be able to get some really cool pictures once the ice starts forming along the shoreline.

There’s a lot of cool optical illusions, especially around dawn and dusk when the skies are grey. Sometimes the clouds in the distance look like giant glaciers in the water off in the distance. Smoking a joint on the way to and from work every day probably helped with the visuals.

  17. hayeksplosives

      More:

“When New York Mayor Bill de Blasio started to shut down New York City, close restaurants, bars, schools, basically put everybody in a state of house arrest, he said, ‘If these policies that I am enacting save one life, it will be worth it.’ That is idiocy. We do not ever make public health policy based on saving one life. We look at perspective, we look at cost, we look at assets.”

Just shoot the unmasked on sight.

    • Chipwooder

Hooboy….see, this is what I was talking about earlier today when we were discussion the probabilities that there will or will not be civil unrest. If this kind of thing continues, combined with people continuing to lose their livelihoods, I could see things escalating.

      • Chafed

So you’re saying he was lobotomized.

    • Chipwooder

Uh oh, sounds like somebody’s getting moved further down the intersectionality pyramid…..

It votes for Biden, thick or thin
Or it gets the hose again

      • Chipwooder

It’s still mind-boggling to me that this horseshit has gone completely mainstream now. I mean, even ten years ago or so people would have laughed at you had you described America 2020, but virtually everyone in media, academia, and now even the corporate world has swallowed this eagerly and asked for seconds. It’s completely nuts.

      • LJW

I think the corporate world for the most part knows it’s bullshit. They just cater to the derp because they know in the end it doesn’t hurt them.

      • trshmnstr the terrible

You’re much more of an optimist than I. I know too many true believers to not think that corporate is all in on this stuff.

      • Q Continuum

It doesn’t hurt them until it hurts them.

Hoping the crocodile eats you last is not a very good long-term strategy.

      • Gustave Lytton

Maybe some of the older more senior ones, but the younger wave is full into that crap.

I see it like the Cultural Revolution. The momentum with the young idiots and they are de facto in charge of this. The mid level management is either trying to ride it or trying to avoid it while the C suites are trying to avoid getting labeled as a capitalist-roaderracist.

      • LJW

In the end regardless of their political leanings they rarely practice what they preach. Which leads me to believe they know it’s bullshit. They preach to create good feelz, which in their mind makes them look like good leaders. Meanwhile people within the company who can think rationally don’t call them out for fear of job loss or being labeled.

Same applies to politics. I don’t think most Democrats buy into the bullshit they preach. They do it for the power. Just look at all the Democrats defying their authoritsrian Coronavirus

      • LJW

        Damn phone finger slipped.

        Authoritarian coronavirus orders*

    • slumbrew

That headline is a whole lot of (actual) racism in just 10 words.

I missed the big Shikha news earlier. Good, it’s past time.

Funny to see all of the fake libertarians like Radley lapping up her assertions not only without question, but adding his own leftist identify politics on top of it. For being such big Shikha fans, you’d think they’ve read enough of her work to see the constant crap she reuses. I also love how people are quick to lay this on the magazine and ignore that she was a Reason Foundation senior policy analyst. If she got canned, it was by her bosses at the Foundation and probably for more than just writing “anti-trump” pieces.

    • Chafed

I think you’re right. There has to be more to this. She was a one trick pony. I felt like I was reading the same article repeatedly. Hopefully the full story comes out sooner rather than later.

    • Gustave Lytton

I hope Kyle Rittenhouse gets a better lawyer soon.

    • Gustave Lytton

      A) anyone that names their association “collective” can fuck right off.

      B) still drinking the kool aid and wanting to believe in unicorns

      C) ignore that the governor’s chief of staff is an apologist for destructive criminals and trying to carry on a conversation with a thug like that. Decorating a lamppost is all he is good for.

    *grumble*

I’m trying to find/come up with a way to make fake power cables for miniatures. Those techniques I’ve seen don’t seem practical. Anything requiring heating plastic is right out. I contemplated use of epoxy putty, but getting a consistant diameter just seems to elude me.

    • But Enough About My Pulsating, Geriatric Pecs

Why not just use actual hookup wire? Comes in loads of different gauges and colours.

      • UnCivilServant

Because it’s difficult to work with, can’t simply be attached with plastic glue, might not take the same primer as everything else, and I’m trying to keep it all plastic.

      • UnCivilServant

If the suggestion with regards to coloring was to leave it unpainted, that would stick out like a sore thumb from the rest of the work. The paint provides a consistant look and feel to the elements of the scene.

      • UnCivilServant

Of course that is going to sound hypocritical if I ever get the last kitbash article done because I use unpainted chain in that, but that chain may actually have been a bad choice.

      • UnCivilServant

Screw it. I’ll leave the project requiring cables be and go finish the chains for the kitbash.

      • Gustave Lytton

Use the cladding off of fine gauge wire, like 24-26ga?

What are you talking about? My mom used to pour me a nice refreshing RC out of where her head used to be every day when I was a kid.

    • robc

I was not awake enough for that yet.

    • Gender Traitor

Do they have license plate-reading traffic cameras? Just wondering if enforcement is technologically possible.

      • UnCivilServant

You can’t prove who is in that car anyway.

      • Gender Traitor

“Areas around LA see huge spike in reports of ‘car thefts'”

Saw your miniature cable conundrum above. Would polyester be close enough to plastic for your purposes?

      • UnCivilServant

        I don’t know. I strongly suspect not, but I haven’t tried.

      • l0b0t

If these are just static cables, maybe try using thin copper wire? You can bend it into any position and It will hold primer and paint.

      • UnCivilServant

Because making the simple hooks for the chains on the kitbash has put me off working with metal wire. Maybe you have better luck than I do, but I’d be better off trying green stuff again.

      • Stinky Wizzleteats

I doubt it’s sophisticated enough but this is all about selective enforcement anyway. They can lodge a charge against almost anyone when they step out of line and are from out of town at will with this requirement because very few are going to do it.

  22. Gender Traitor

It’s BattleBots night! I know there won’t be a studio audience, and I hope they don’t screw it up with too much mask crap, but it helps make up for the lack of Punkin Chunkin’ on Thanksgiving.

    • robc

Let me know when they go fully autonomous. Keeping your AI alive becomes key then.

      • UnCivilServant

Why would you want that? It removes the fun from the sport.

      • Stinky Wizzleteats

Keeping yourself alive will be key when that happens.

      FTA:

I have calculated the following from the messages I get from men:

      * 92 per cent think if you are con-fident enough to be seen in your undies, you must be up for sex.

      * Two per cent tell me that, as a Muslim woman, I will go to hell.

      * Two per cent send sleazy, cringeworthy compliments.

      * Two per cent send decent compliments.

      * Two per cent send explicit photos of their penises.

      Margin of error ?

/as a muslim woman, Im sure her local Imam would have some strong words for a barely-clad woman sharing her pics on the internet. YMMV.
