Where were we? Oh, the seeds arrived and were planted, 4 in rock wool and one in Miracle Gro Indoor soil, as I thought, the soil planted seeds came up first, 2 days earlier than Rock wool, but the RW had good root structure immediately, so they took to the soil readily.
Slow start. Well they are plants, you have to give them some time, but things will look completely different in 6 weeks or so after the nutes are ramped up and the lights are on full power.
Light and heat are big factors, one more than the other. I used to use CFLs for the growth/veg part of my grow, HPS lamps are expensive and a big electrical cost, so CFL is cost effective. I knew LED was getting better, efficient and the color can be tuned, so on this foray I discovered lamps that had 1000w equivalent fixtures that only draw 105 watts. Huuge savings, and only $60 per fixture, a good deal all around. I checked them against my light meter and found them putting out over 20000 Lumens at 18” which kicks ass, trust me on this, HPS gives off 15000 at 150 watts. Win!
You’lI need a warming mat for your babies, Mine raises the soil temp to about 85-90 Americanheit, not needed but helpful.
Nutrients. You will need soil amendments, not like hydroponics, but the same numbers apply.
NPK is what we rely on, these are Nitrogen, Phosphorus and Potassium, all plants need them, as well as Micro Nutes like Magnesium, Calcium etc. But let’s stick with the Big 3
Nitrogen makes your shit get big, and fast, Phosphorus promotes root growth, and Potassium makes Flowers, so the need to adjust varies depending where you are in the growth cycle, check out these numbers,

Overfeeding will burn your plants to a crisp, you must be easy with nutes, however, a friend is running a crop at 4000 PPM which is insane, but they are kicking ass, go figure.
Timing is your friend. If I continue to do everything right I’ll have three footers in 8 weeks, I’ll take clones at about 5 weeks, and let the big boys flower, looking for males to kill. ‘Til next time.
Bonsai!
I like my garden, it keeps the winter at bay, so I decided to try Bonsai trees, same idea, just longer term, like, a few years, we’ll see how that plays, but I have the ultimate green thumb, thanks to growing weed.
I’m putting in three cypress over the winter.
Cool! out door is not so good right now,

LED is a game changer for plants, terrestrial or otherwise. I just got one from miraclegro for the carnivorous plants and cactus in my office. Needs a timer, but otherwise it kicks ass.
Which extra-terrestrial plants do you cultivate?
Trash is probably shooting for the extra-terrestial carnivorous ones.
Q will grow the ones with tits.
The whole place is going grow LED, cheap and bright, timers are 2 for 10 bucks, mechanical rules….
I just got one from miraclegro
I got the wife an Aerogarden (owned by miraclegro) a couple weeks ago. Expensive but cool little device. I’m looking forward to having fresh herbs for cooking year-round. We’ve got some carnivorous plants too sitting on the kitchen windowsill. I thought about throwing them in there too but there’s only six spots.
The aerogardens are awesome. I just finished out a crop of tomatoes, jalepenos, thyme, and parsley. Probably won’t do the fruit crops ever again (they over grow the aerogarden after a few months), but the next round of herbs and flowers just came in the mail with the new LED light.
Man, there are some killer LED grow lights out now. Some of the ones with Samsung LEDS, like Spider Farmer are just unreal.
I was looking at some for my tomatoes and peppers, but my house is just not big enough right now. Planning on getting some when we buy a home next year and also plan on building a greenhouse.
Mine are cheap, but extremely bright, like don’t! you will hurt yourself bright, and having done the math over the years, these are dirt cheap to operate, my PC pulls more wattage,
I’m looking at a couple of these next fall for my maters and peppers. Hopefully to supplement a greenhouse.

I was watching a video of a guy who had hung one of those in front of his garage for testing. It was dark out and it was lit up like daylight, outside. I mean you could probably read a book with fine print 20 ft away. They’re like mini suns.
I love growing stuff anyway, I’m all sorts of hyped up over these new lights.
Are glibs going into the weed business?
just for fun,
I was really good at it when I was in my 20s, and I have a serious green thumb. Gardening, horticulture stuff is 2nd nature to me. Unfortunate for me, it’s not legal here and never will be. And I doubt anywhere else I want to move to will have legal weed in my lifetime.
I expect the Biden admin to go all out war on legal states and shut them down by next year anyway.
I forget who it was, but one Glib a while back was in the legal weed business, but I think it went bust.
I recall that. I can’t remember who it was, or where he was…
Creosote Achilles. (sp?)
I thought that was the guy who joined up with Moj to form a sex cult and ruin Glib’s family friendly rep?
I think it was someone else. Damnit, I cannot recall!
Creosote was definitely in the business. We talked in Portland when I was there for National Homebrew Conference.
He posted a story here about how his partner sold all their product for monopoly money. He later posted that they were moving to producing cannabis oil.
He has also posted about tying knots for kinky purposes.
Maybe it was him. I think after him and moj started on the dom/sub sex scene, it may have changed the narrative so much that I couldn’t identify the guy with anything else.
Did he use to live in KY? Because I was thinking the weed biz guy had lived in KY for a while, because I thought we were discussing that?
The weed thing (not legal) was so prevalent back in the 70s and 80s that it’s probably a more common plant there now than tobacco, peppers, corn, or oak trees. And I don’t mean hemp, I mean the psychoactive variety of the plant, since it escaped domestication 40 years go.
I believe he originated in North Carolina.
I think you recall it better than I do, Kinnath, so you’re probably right.

Ah, I see… you’re right bro.

I also wrote about distilling. I don’t make it on here as much any more.
Yeah, I was in the weed business briefly and unsuccessfully, the hemp oil did better but not well enough. I got out of it.

Thanks Yufus! I have the black thumb of death. I usually kill all plants and my peppers and tomatoes this year grew huge but fruit was stunted and small. Or does this just work on weed? I killed everything I tried to grow in that arena as well in the one attempt I did just to see if I could. I couldn’t.
I have the black thumb of death.
My dad can’t raise anything at all. He’s totally crippled and can’t manage any plant-life at all. I attribute it to his towering defense mechanisms, the neurosis due to an incredibly violent and malignant childhood. And now that he’s 80 ……….
My folks are struggling to grow anything as well. I write it off to different dirt from when they had a huge bountiful garden lower. 500 ft of elevation out of the valley matters here. I have never cared to psychologically analyze them past they are quirky old people I love and at this point are the only reason I am staying in this state that, as displayed by the last election has gone full retard.
Full retard ≠ going for Biden. That was a given.
Full retard = a handful of front range counties pushing over the vote for: Introducing wolves to the western slope, increasing tobacco taxes about a gazillion %, and doing away with the electoral college and all ours going with the national popular vote. The last being full retard + idiocy.
It works for any plant, this formula is more for flowering fruits, some adjustments of course, I plan on some peppers, pansies and pot, depending.
It’s actually super easy with weed if you’re using lights. Just cut the light hours down to 8-10 hours a day and they’ll start blooming. Of course in MI, you won’t get to that before frost will kill them outside, you’ll need a warmer clime for good weed. But inside, yeah, you can do whatever you want and with today’s LEDs, it’s easy and cheap.
Indoor is the only reason I would try up here, right now its 18/6 with veg nutes, then cut to 12/12 with bloom nutes and watch the magic happen
I think we were going 14 a day and then we’d cut to 10 and then to 8. Back then it was expensive high pressure sodium bulbs with a ton of heat and outrageous electric cost, not any more, the LEDs are a game changer.
Yep, it’s the main reason I started up again, that and I have enough spave for a nice indoor operation, and still do some living room Houseplants, type stuff,
I’m not Growing in Michigan,

Had to say goodbye to my Pachira last month after 15 years together. Trimmed him down every half year to just the top few leaves, repotted him when he’d out grow his pot, and gave him some extra juice when he looked down. Surprised I kept him alive that long given how I was just using intuition and attention sans botanical knowledge. I’ll use some of the knowledge on my “Happy Tree”, Yusef. Thanks.
I have 4 types in germination phase right now, knowing how long it takes, they may end up as pets, or children, a very Zen activity,
Goodbye Pachira!
Goodbye, indeed. For some reason, I’m able to keep things alive for a long time. *Pets goldfish*
My condolences. I hope you dump him in your favorite drinking parking lot so it can become a memorial.
A hard to kill plant? I might have to get one of those.
I have a system of growing stuff indoors, which doesn’t really differ from growing stuff outdoors, because I start everything indoors since I don’t live in a tropical clime.
I use those plastic condiment cups to start seeds. I just put a piece of folded paper towel inside, spray them down with water, not too wet, but moist, put the seeds on top, put the lids on, and put them somewhere warm.
Once they sprout and I see germination leaves, I transplant them into one of those peat pellets and when they get a little bigger, I put them into a 4-6″ pot and upgrade from there.
The best way to start plants I have found, I get a very good success rate doing that.
Not to go into more difficult to germinate seeds that require things like stratification and scarification, that’s an entire different matter. But for veggies, it’s perfect, and would be for weed also.
Your method is excellent, I run mine straight into Miracle Gro immediately, the amendments lend themselves to fast, sturdy growth, when it’s Time Change, you flip to Nova bloom, etc.
I want to know right away if a seed is viable. Also, it’s so sterile and reduces chances of disease from the start.
Wow green thumb people.
I on the other hand forgot to water my potted tomato after Thanksgiving, so it nearly died. I am a terrible plant mommy.
Maters love water and suffer quickly without it.
-1 WaterWorld…
I am a cruel tyrant on plants. If you don’t produce fruits, veggies, or a few types of flowers you better be ready to die or thrive on your own.
I have an 18″ by 6′ wheeled cart full of tomato and pepper plants I had on my deck and we decided to bring them in.
My wife said ‘Do you think if we bring that cart inside, they will live?’. I said ‘yeah for a while let’s try it, at least the green ones will ripen’.
So we wheeled it in and left it in front of a wall of glass patio doors. We’ve been picking a pint jar once or twice a week of ripened tomatoes off of them for almost a month now. They’re all small tomatoes like cherry, pears, and grapes, but there’s so many of them. They’re even growing. I don’t expect any new tomatoes, although there are lots of new blooms, but there are still a lot of green ones that are ripening, I think it was well worth it.
I haven’t had plants since I got my kitties fifteen years ago. Now that I’m alone again maybe I’ll get some plants. Dunno shit about them but I liked this plant I had with sort-of rectangular leaves once. I get tons of sun in my living room.
Do It! Plants make you feel good,
Especially certain ones…
I’m going to do some Annual flowers next week, blooms in the dead of Winter….
and still grow weed,
WATER!!!
No really, water is tricky, get a basic hygrometer,
Timing, just because you set everything up on a schedule, doesn’t mean your plants will follow it, and you may have to adjust lighting times, nurient levels, who knows,
or just relax and don’t over/under water.
Don’t need it. The correct way to water plants is that when the container feels dry at the top, you can stick your finger in a half inch and it still feels dry, water until it drains. Never half ass water a plant. And don’t water a plant again until it passes the dry soil test, then water again, until drains.
Different stages, different needs,
I use different methods, as you will see,
Most common mistake people make about container plants, is overwatering. Almost always caused by insufficient drainage. Plants 101.
A drill can fix that fairly easily.
A bit about Soil and chemicals
I use both in my soil and watering as fertilizer, I don’t need crushed egg shells and fish carcass’ to grow good plants, But, if your going to grow fruits, flowers or veggies, you need to flush the Nutes before harvest. Since you don’t need to worry about root rot anymore, Flood your pots, crops etc. with clear water, change it it if you need to, but, the roots will draw in the fresh and dilute the nutrients, 2 days then harvest,
This post reminds me: I have some LED lights that are supposed to contain the wavelengths needed by plants. I had it in my work cubicle 3 years ago for my air plants.
I wonder where it is now. Probably in that last cardboard box in the garage..:
Higher K= cooler light, good for evreyday growing, kinda blue, 6400k
Lower K=Warmer light for blooming any flower, kinda Red, 3200k
Thanks! When I find it I will look up it’s specs. I would like to start Tomatoes indoors this winter so I can plant outside in March.
Holy crap. Retired MN governor Mark Dayton just married his one-time campaign aide.
He’s 73 and she is 32.
I have an age gap in my marriage too, but 41 years is a bit much.
I threw up a little reading that, just gross,,
I assume the young lads has some political aspirations. Or just likes money.
But yeah, when he’s 83, her 41 ass will be getting some from the pool boy.
He probably won’t care as long as she gives it to him once a week with his Viagra.

You’re probably right, Q. He couldn’t be so foolish as to think she’d be with him if he weren’t heir to the Dayton department store fortune.
I believe his net worth is near or in the billions. His kids are probably panicking.
Maybe he did it on purpose…
So you’re saying he has one redeeming quality?

Gotta admit, the stress of all this extra stuff on my plate is wearing me down. Things like: have the kid’s mask ready every morning and record her temperature, meetings rescheduled, protocols all screwy at whatever company I’m going to for the day. Squirt this crap on your hands if you enter here. Keep a fucking sheet of plastic between yourself and that person. Is that company gonna send us home if the governor declares a state of emergency due to an alleged spike? Is the wife’s job gonna be effected? My elderly mom OK? Is my bro taking care of her and what if they don’t let him see her? My kid’s school gonna stay open and if not how do I juggle that?
All this on top of what already is a hectic work schedule I had going this year. Fuck it. I took the day off, got coffee and drew pictures all morning. Feeling a bit better.
I live in the supposed Hell of Michigan, and while everyone wears the Mark, no on harrases me, i wear my fleece neck gaiter, and put it up because it’s cold, maybe that’s good enough for the Frightened Ones..

I hear you. My kids get 2 days of virtual instruction a week and haven’t seen the inside of a classroom since March. There were rumors that my county would allow two days of in person instruction and two days of virtual schooling in January, but that was apparently voted down as too difficult, so my children are stuck with two days a week of actual ‘class-time’ and three days where they’re supposed to complete assignments independently. The masking nonsense has me frustrated enough I haven’t ordered out for dinner since Nov 12, which is definitely the longest streak I’ve ever managed to cook dinner at home.
This is for a county with a total of 28 commie cough deaths since March, and a total of only 69 hospitalizations.
DOOM! Manistee County,
255 cases
5 deaths
DOOOM!
Yup. They don’t break death age statistics down to county level, instead using health jurisdiction, but even then when you move up to the FAR more alarming 60 deaths in my entire region since this started, forty-three of them were over the age of 70. That’s supposed to alarm me? I hate everyone involved in decision-making in my state. They could all use a good kick square in the crotch.
My township just went over 300 cases. For the first 50, there were 4 deaths. For the next 250+ there have been zero deaths.
The school stuff is def a pain in the ass. Sorry you’re feeling the pinch, too. To top it off, they’re trying to fill her head with fear about it. Not working, fortunately.
Yeah, that’s the only reason my kids don’t even get their two days ‘in person’; neither of them are willing to wear a mask. They’re not afraid of the virus, and spend all their non school time playing with no regard for social distancing or masks with their other friends in the neighborhood; hell I have to order them to even wash their hands. My daughter reports to me how many times the teacher has to tell the actual in-school students to put their masks back on. The record for one kid for one class was 10 times.
It’s almost like the kids know that there’s something wrong with wearing a mask all day.
They do. There’s a significant contingent of hoodrats my children belong to, which bike a few miles each way in order to go into town and go shopping on their own, and find other neighborhood kids to hang with. Fine, you’re closing the schools and most other venues where kids can congregate? They don’t need school to find other kids to play with; and the ones still allowed outdoors aren’t afraid of the ‘rona either. If I could just get my kids to consistently return the bs assignments their teachers give them, they’d be down to all of 10 hours of school a week and free to play the rest of the time.

This was someone’s comment on their page. I wish these sorts would just fuck off.
The best part is that the people making these sort of comments don’t even live in Northern Michigan. Most of them live in other states. They’re just looking for people on social media to shit on to make themselves feel better.

Speaking of LED lights I bought a custom LED 6500K fixture from this now defunct company for my 100 gal planted fresh water aquarium. https://www.buildmyled.com/
They were doing what seemed to me to be pretty good business selling custom LED fixtures to salt and fresh aquarium hobbyists and indoor gardeners. Then a few years ago they suddenly pulled down their aquarium lighting web store and announced they were leaving the consumer lighting market. They changed their name and decided to devote their resources to the commercial agriculture and weed trade. Still have the light, top shelf quality and cost a few pennies. While I still haven’t quite got the gist of it I can grow easy plants in my tank with CO2. I prefer live plants in my tank over plastic ones, looks better and the fish seem to prefer them too.
While I still haven’t quite got the gist of it I can grow easy plants in my tank with CO2.
Tom Barr is a name to research if you don’t already know him. Takashi Amano, as well.
Barr is all about the philosophy that plant growth is always limited by something. Either they’re limited by the light, the nutrients, or the CO2 in the water column.
I had amazing results when I hung a LED light over the tank, injected CO2, and dosed fertilizers using the EI method. Algae wasn’t too bad, harder plants grew like crazy, and fish were still happy.
It filled out fuller than this, but I don’t have any later pics.
Great write-up, Bob!
My best friend has successfully grown about a dozen plants and has managed to get at least a 20-25% THC level out of ten of them. A couple have hovered around 30%; all grown in his closet basement with some attention given to light, heat, cycles, humidity, and ventilation. I’ve tried to get him to submit an article about the subject but he doesn’t want to. Shame, despite his reflexive Republican apologies for anything with a neo-con slant(He’s been faaaaar too into Ben Shapiro lately) I’ve managed to instill a modicum of a libertarian streak in the cat.
Speaking of fertilizer, I’m going to verify the existence of 55,000 cubic yards of fresh compost material tomorrow. Yes!! Plus a bunch of gravel, sand, mulch and other stuff. In the rain and cold. Gonna need a coffee.
So you’re saying you got your grow license, or are you about to go all McVeigh on everybody’s ass? ;p
What’s the reason for checking out all those materials? Just curious.
As part of an audit. All that stuff is considered as part of collateral for a line of credit. The bank wants me to go verify that stuff… exists.
Got it. That’s a hell of a lot of compost. I can see having that much wood mulch around, but it takes a lot of material to make that much compost.
Yeah. I’m not kidding about my enthusiasm. That is alot of compost. It’s the spot in western Washington where all the compost is made apparently. Should be interesting.
So….how would you repo that?
Yeah well. That’s the thing. The bank doesn’t want to repo it. In a downturn scenario, the material would stay in place and be sold at a deep discount to a customer or competitor.
The bank doesn’t lend on 100% the value of inventory. Something like compost, gravel, sand and mulch? The bank is probably only lending on maybe 40% of value. So if they need to liquidate, they can move it quickly and probably break even.
Back in the early 90’s there was a large landscaping outfit in the ritzy burbs north of Chicago that was ahead of it’s time and had a great little side business.
They would charge other landscape companies to dump their yard waste, turn it into compost, then resell it back to the landscape companies or sell it for their own use. They had a prime location on Hway 41, so it was a convenient place for other companies to get rid of their waste.
That’s the business model.
That’s what my mulch place does.
The nursery close to home here, gets it from there and then sells it for double. The local lumberyard gets it from there and bags it and charges triple.

This is a really good site for data and graphs that lets you play around to make your own. This one is stringency of lockdowns. While we have heard throughout the panic that Sweden was the lone example of not locking down, their two Scandinavian neighbors were also of a very light government touch. Finland and Norway had very short “lockdowns” and still don’t have mask requirements in public. I guess we haven’t heard as much about them as they really wreck the lockdownista narrative as they have both had some of the lowest per million mortality rates of any country that keeps real data.

I can share, this time,
Hello Mrs. Straffinrun.
In a more ideal world you would possibly be an adult game show host. There would be ten women and twenty men with the requisite attributes. Due to the fact that you were the host the females would skew heavily large breasted. The men would have to compete in various physical and mental tasks and the women would choose one or at most two of them to get it one with. Of course the male could refuse. This would likely be very rare of course. The highest rated guys could move on to the lightening rounds.
Sounds like a plan. What do the lightning rounds consist of?
The females would go separate for a few days and talk amongst themselves and share their ratings of the guys (and lie to each other of course). Any female could choose then from any of the ones the others had already banged. I’ve had a few ideas for names but nothing rock solid.
I hope SOMETHING is rock solid in that scenario. : /
What do we have for the Winner!!
I’d say the highest rated guy and gal should both get something special.
“Bob, show them what they’ve won!!!”

Mark Steyn has a depressing yet grimly amusing column today.
Original article:

Plenty of goodies in that one to contemplate. Maybe the lawsuits will help buy us time before the statist lefties have taken permanent hold.
A hope, but really the bureaucracy is set in stone and accepted.
With news that the bureaucracy lied about troop levels in Syria and not a single Cindy raised their hand is evident that we want a nameless corp of suits to do what they do, and a figure head to cleave when it is neccessary.

At this point the best we can hope for is gridlock. A roll back of the permanent state seems so impossible as this year has shown all too well. I still hold out hope that a year or two from now large masses of people look back on the shutdowns as unwarranted. When the screw finally turns I just hope it turns towards more skeptical outlooks towards Daddy Guv.
