What did you do in the Farce, mikey? I didn’t spend a lot of time sitting.

Radar controller. Entire job consisted of sitting in a chair in a dark room.

Imagine being 1 of 4 Army guys at an AF Base and wearing civilian clothes. Our office was in the HQs building but we had our own door. One New Year’s we wore our dress duds to the Base Commander’s NY’s reception and the Base Commander was shocked, shocked when he realized we worked in his HQ building.

      • mikey

We had a few Army ADA types at our radar site. If they started acting up the 1stSgt justt would say “If you guys don’t lke it here I’ll send you back to Darmstad.” “We’ll be good Shirt. We promise!!” An AF E-4 lived better that an Arm LT

I’m not sure I’m 100% committed to making black eyed peas and cornbread

It’s traditional, but I don’t believe in “luck” so I’m pretty sure I won’t bring down the wrath of the Black Eyed Peas fairy if I skip it…

That song reminds me of Port Harcourt Nigeria.

My very limited experience with black-eyed peas (in a college cafeteria) suggests that a healthy dose of Beano would be in order beforehand.

We usually make Hoppin’ John, but with a 10-bean soup mix (which may or may not include black-eyed peas.) Unfortunately, we kinda missed the window for starting to soak the beans.

      • hayeksplosives

If you have an instant pot, you don’t have to soak the beans.

I read your comment about the vacation funds. If you’ve got a few thousand that you’re looking to spend on yourself instead of saving or giving to charity, might I suggest a Shadow 2? You’ll love it. I only say that because every single person who had fired one loves it.

    • Chafed

My daughtees love that show. I like what I’ve seen. Danson is great whatever he is in.

Heh, heh. “He’s a devil for the drink.” That’s where a couple of my father’s brothers still live. Cork City os fun and the coastline there is stunning. If you ever get a chance, the craic and trad sessions in the pubs of Crookhaven are something to behold.

      • dontreadonme

Sounds like my wife’s grandfather who is from Cork City. Visited a couple years ago and had a great time. Somewhat surprisingly, there is excellent food to be found there, as well.

    • KSuellington

This one was a great Ted Danson that didn’t get much attention. Jason Schwartzman was great in it as well.

We like that show. Love the feel and pacing of it

I like Ted Danson’s versatility as an actor. Sam Malone and Becker are two very different personality types. Would do both.

I was actually somewhat productive, yesterday. maybe I’ll make an attempt to maintain some momentum.

There’s some stupid show on my teevee, which came on after the last stupid show. It stars a nice old Willys Jeep pickup I wouldn’t mind having.

Breakfast: buttermilk pancakes, over easy eggs, pot of coffee.

Rest of the day is devoted to reading books.

Dinner is going to be gnocchi soup.

  6. Not Adahn

Puttering around cleaning, installed new mailbox, and taking a phenomenally long time to make a batch of poor person’s soup.

Bones roasted and in the pressure cooker. Not enough room for any aromatics, so those will get added later. filling will be any salvageable meat scraps, cabbage and barley.

I may try a ribeye from frozen later today. Because I forgot to thaw & age it.

    • robc

Reverse sear. Takes forever starting from frozen, but it works. Searing at the end means it matters less the temp at the start.

I just pulled a ribeye and a ny strip out of the freezer for tonight.

      • KOVIDKristen

All the “from frozen” recipes/techniques do not use the reverse sear. The sear from frozen and put in a low oven.

      • mrfamous

Just got an immersion circulator/precision cooker for Xmas from my sister. Have only used once. Somewhat perfect for your situation.

Though cooking from frozen isn’t that hard. I think searing at the start or the end should work, but I’m a little not enthused with the searing of frozen meat, so I’d do it at the end.

      • KOVIDKristen

I have an Ananova immersion circulator that I haven’t used in a while. I always got water leakage when I used it. Maybe I’ll double bag the meat (EUPHEMISM ALERT) and try.

      • dontreadonme

Sous vide at 137 for 1.5-2 hours. Sear for 30 sec a side. Eat.

Mmmmm… bread lines. Does this mean we’re all going to get Tommy Guns and start boot legging white lightning?

      • EvilSheldon

Nah, we’re all going to get shorty M4s and start refining and distributing heroin and crank.

They need to give every cent of it to citizens of fuck the hell right off with this porkfest.

      A notorious concert.

  9. Mojeaux

That “buy once, cry once” is a good bit of wisdom.

We’ve exhausted ourselves trying to replace furniture with secondhand goods off FB marketplace and/or Craigslist. We may be getting new recliners today (and wince at the price tag) and then my back and hip won’t suffer from broken-down furniture. Also, our current recliners are power recliners and the cord comes unplugged and if the power goes out, it stops working.

Yet, the Scot in me screams, “You haven’t amortized that out long enough!”

    • Festus

My inner Scot screams “Use it, abuse it, bend it and mend it! Into the bin she goes!”

    Happy New Year!

I was at a bar last night. They had live music from 8-10 PM. I left after the music. It was sad how few people showed up. The staff were speculating that they might close before midnight. I got home and went to sleep. Around 11 or so, the neighborhood fireworks started.

The BBC broadcast of the Vienna Philharmonic’s 2021 New Year’s concert is up on youtube in two parts: Part one and part two. It sad seeing the hall empty.

Every year for the last several years except for 2020 I signed up for the lotto for the right to buy tickets for the concert. I didn’t sign up in 2020 because I forgot the correct dates to sign up for the lotto. I’m not going to sign up again until things get back to normal.

    • Hyperion

Someone else was outside! Super outbreak ensuing!

    • Cy

Was the live band any good? I’m surprised they’d shut down at 10pm on a new years eve.

      • Hyperion

The vid gets worse after 10pm, it’s sentient you know and it’s out to get you.

      • DEG

One man band. The Clown Prince’s rules don’t allow for more than one performer, because if you have more than one person performing live music everyone gets Lil Rona. One person scares Lil Rona, more than one person emboldens Lil Rona. It makes perfect sense and anyone who says otherwise is a science denier.

The place was dead. The place has seen a downtown in business over the last month as Lil Rona is “surging”. I’m surprised the Clown Prince hasn’t shut everything down again. I’m expecting him to extend his mask edict which expires Jan. 15th and also shut things down in January.

      • Hyperion

You all could have rioted and burned a bunch of private property down, that would be OK.

      • hayeksplosives

Riverside county officials have said they’re not going to fine or enforce closures. That’s not far from me, so I plan to check out the scene in Temecula, which has a “main drag” lined with restaurants and shops.

I’m going to start paying more attention to sheriff elections.

A sheriff in Wisconsin pre-announced that he wouldn’t be taking a Raw Milk buyer and seller in jail regardless of the trial outcome, so the state quietly dropped the case (court bailiffs usually report to the sheriff, not the city cops).

And I think we’ve all heard a story or two of sheriffs refusing to enforce unconstitutional gun laws.

We need to keep the good sheriffs, and keep them independent of city snd state politics as much as possible.

      • DEG

A few sheriffs in PA said they won’t enforce Wolf’s edicts. This might not seem like a big deal as many sheriffs in PA don’t do law enforcement, even though they have the power to do so. They leave it up to the municipalities and the state police. Those sheriffs stick to things like courtroom security and running the county jail.

It is actually a big deal because sheriffs, county DA, and judges are all elected. At the county level, they all face the same voters. If the sheriff isn’t going to enforce the edicts, and the voters aren’t mad about it, what do the DA and judges that face the same voters think?

In NH, sheriffs are kinda meaningless. They just take care of courtroom security and enforcing evictions. Judges aren’t elected. Many of the judges are in the Clown Prince’s pocket as his family are like the Kennedy clan when the Kennedy clan had power. The state AG can take over prosecution from the county attorneys as I understand it, unlike in PA where the county DA handles the case unless the county DA turns it over to the state. Here in NH, the place the attack is the legislature.

      • DEG

Oh. I didn’t answer your question about the music.

The guy is a good performer.

A falling down unlivable shack in that city will costs you a million dollars and you can’t even go out to dine. What a great place, why doesn’t everyone want to live there!?

      • hayeksplosives

San Francisco has visibly declined in the past 15 years. Such a beautiful city utterly destroyed.

Californians were just way too complacent and happy about their own situations to bother with paying attention to the power shift. They let the worst of the worst grifters take over.

Each little incremental bit didn’t sound like much of a sacrifice, but that shit adds up, and it can snowball in a hurry.

      • Sandi

I have friends in Burlingame. I visit them, but never go into the City.

      • Hyperion

LOL. I keep thinking that my new red state I will relocate to soon don’t have nothing to fear from he, I’ll only make them LESS woke. But I’d also support a ballot measure that would create an open hunting season on any commiefornians moving there, as well as any Baltimorons or DC idiots who cannot certify they are NOT lefties. The test will include being able to drink a quart of moonshine in single session and barbecue a hog while doing it in, as well as being able to give the definition of TMITE, CWAA, and other things only non-lefties could possibly know. I’ll think of more interesting parts of the test before the ballot is up for a vote.

      • Fourscore

Though MN is blue, thanks to two big cities, Deplorables are welcome in the hinderlands. It will only go red if we get some incoming. Working from home in the woods is less expensive and the people more friendly, after you’ve been here 10-15 years.

The best part is that the snow, cold and mosquitoes tend to concentrate most of the worst in those 2 cities.

Lil Rona Panic pushback in Vermont

The Vermont town of Stamford has voted to overturn in its community Gov. Phil Scott’s emergency orders issued to protect the state during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The select board of the town of about 800 people along the Massachusetts border voted 3-2 Tuesday to “terminate” the governor’s restrictions. Select Board member Daniel Potvin says the restrictions remain in place while what he expects will be a legal battle plays out. “

    • Hyperion

I expect to see the National Guard to be deployed to places like that right after Trump leaves office.

I love how restrictions can be applied immediately, but the removal of the restrictions has to go through a complicated legal process.

I thought that sticking a fork in an electrical outlet was a right of passage? We all did it as kids, but mostly only once. Then we had to stick a fork in a toaster, but after that, we didn’t try electrocution anymore. After that we got to be more grown up, like 8, and tried to play Evel Knievel by jumping the creek on our mini-bike with a makeshift ramp built with a sheet of plywood and some cinder blocks. Then we got pellet guns and shot each other in the woods playing war.

Nothing but pussy kids running around today. Their Legos are probably made from recyclable degradable plastic and are too big to swallow. They also probably have large lettering on each one that says ‘DO NOT EAT. NOT SUITABLE FOR KIDS UNDER 41.

I’ve never stuck a fork in a socket, but, shouldn’t it just trip the breaker and leave the fork wielder unharmed? Unless you’re standing barefoot in a grounded puddle and jam the fork in the hot lead and it’s not a GFCI outlet/breaker.

      • Suthenboy

Uh, no. It does trip the breaker but it still knocks your ass across the room. Or so I have been told.

        RE: legos

Since 1963, Lego pieces have been manufactured from a strong, resilient plastic known as acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS). … Lego has a self-imposed 2030 deadline to find a more eco-friendly alternative to the ABS plastic it currently uses in its bricks.

I went to check, so I could be all “Akshully, Lego is one of the few things that hasn’t…” but there you go, beginning and end of the 1st para of https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lego#Manufacturing. They haven’t changed…yet.

And they’re not suitable for kids under 41 as a matter of disposable income.

Indeed! That’s how to start the year.

  19. egould310

If you were considering buying a new Boss Super Chorus CH-1, do so now. For 30 years it’s been a standard part of guitar rigs, and a ubiquitous pedal. Now all of the sudden, they are kind of hard to come by. Guy at the music store said they can’t keep them in stock.

I had one on order from Amazon, but they canceled the order. Got one on order from zzounds, but it is taking so long for it to arrive. It’s gonna sound so good. So very jangly.

    • Urthona

Pedals are gay. Turn amp to 11 and melt faces.

      • Yusef drives a Kia

My Tube Screamer wants a word out back…….

      • egould310

Yeah. I’m a turn an amp to 11 guy myself. I just want a hint of chorusy chime in there too. A $120 pedal is cheaper than a $3000 Rickenbacker.

      • pan fried wylie

I got my 1st tube amp last summer. I’ve been very happy with it quality-wise, though based on the reviews they might be inconsistent. Nothing peeps on here couldn’t fix I suspect.

Was really fun discovering that threshold where strumming JUST A LITTLE harder will push it just into overdrive. “Oh, my, that never happened before.”

Perfect for Crank & Melt applications.

      • egould310

That’s a pretty decent looking amp. 15W should be plenty loud. Loud as fuck, actually. Driving a 12” Celestion and yeah, you’re pretty much Dave Davies. 🙂

    • pan fried wylie

The schematic isn’t readily available? Who even uses chorus. (Hasn’t used a pedal since…damn, nearly since I started playing. Not sure If I can find my DS-1 anymore.)

I’m more concerned that logitech has discontinued the G510 and didn’t replace it with any models that have 3-column g-keys. I got the G15 for warcraft c.2006, never managed to make those extra keys useful for any other games really, but they’ve become indispensable for my cut/copy/paste/undo/selectall functions plus keys from the righthand side of the keyboard I use frequently (backspace, underscore, shift+enter, home, end); so the past decade+ I haven’t had to reach for ctrl+ combos, and no frequent reach-acrossing, left hand stays on the left side, right hand stays on the trackball but in range of the numpad…

Without the 3-column gkey layout, my whole keyboard setup is fucked. I haven’t gotten up the balls to go look if there’s still G510s in stock on amazon, but if they are should I get one or two spares? The one I’m using dates to Sept. 2011…I can’t imagine it’ll last too much longer, and then I’ll already be into my 1 spare…yeah, prolly get 2.

Or see if anybody else makes a keyboard with the 3-columns of extra keys on the left.

  20. pan fried wylie

Get this—I hear Trump’s gonna hide the keys when he walks out of the White House for the last time. He’ll chuck ’em into the rose bushes. Biden will be on his hands and knees scrabbling around in the dirt looking for them.

“JOE, COME INSIDE ALREADY, how many times do we have to tell you all the locks are keypads?! I don’t think Donald even actually threw anything…”

By the time he’s ready to leave, they’re gonna have to airlift in sufficient quantities of Aricept™ to keep him semi-coherent. Mebbe they could just dip him into a 55-gallon drum of it every morning, and spike every drink he’s given with it.

      • Hyperion

That MFer is going to be harrassed to within an inch of his life 24/7 until he’s gone. Payback is a bitch.

      • But Enough About My "Essential Retiree" Status

Well, here’s hoping, but with the Left and most of the legacy media covering for him constantly, I dunno if that’ll matter so much.

      • Hyperion

I don’t think the media can stop it. Too many people are pissed off. Cheating in an election and the remembrance of how Trump was treated will not be forgotten. I don’t care if anyone likes Trump or not, staging a 4 year coup and finally achieving it through election fraud is unacceptable and there should be hell to pay for it.

    • Hyperion

I love watching that game. Is something wrong with me? I mean besides the obvious stuff.

    • Hyperion

I could tell the kid was going to be good the moment I seen him. He is built exactly like I was in my teens, skinny and all lanky and I could throw anything a literal mile, football, baseball, rock, whatever.

Shame this is a young man’s game and not for old crony’s like me. I still want to play.

Got an email from Gunbroker with the biggest sellers of different types of guns in December. This was the biggest selling semi auto shotgun:

    https://www.gunbroker.com/Semi-Auto-Shotguns/search?Keywords=IWI-TS12&trk_msg=DFN7PIS2LS84L7Q5KE1Q5B54LO&trk_contact=PAU5IV06GNGK63V5ONB8SCJA5S&trk_sid=76JKO81NIK12FQ3C31UL0SG4BG&utm_source=Listrak&utm_medium=Email&utm_term=IWI%20TS12&utm_campaign=Top%20Selling%20Report&utm_content=Top%20Selling%20NOV%202020

Tells you something about the mindset of American gun owners. And it’s not pretty.

This was the biggest selling semi auto shotgun:

Which reminds me of an exchange in the movie “The Missouri Breaks”.

She: Why do you have a sawed off shotgun?

He (Jack Nicholson): Because I’m a sawed off sportsman.

I’m not being very productive. I decided to watch “a” youtube video. It’s two and a half hours or so later, all of a sudden.

    Oh, well.

    Oh, noes!

The United States has reached a sobering milestone to mark the new year.

On Friday, the first day of 2021, the U.S. recorded its 20 millionth confirmed coronavirus case since the beginning of the pandemic.

That’s according to numbers from Johns Hopkins University, which reported 20,037,736 cases and 346,687 deaths in the U.S. on at the time of publication on Friday. Over 83 million coronavirus cases have been confirmed world wide.

The U.S. reached 10 million cases on Nov. 9. In less than two months, the country doubled its total number of infections.

The nation accounts for nearly a quarter of all infections in the world and a fifth of all deaths.

Blah blah blah. Meaningless numbers are meaningless. A case is 24 cans.

At the current rate it would take years to vaccinate enough Americans to get the pandemic under control, according to NBC News.

President-elect Joe Biden vowed the U.S. would pick up the pace on Tuesday during a speech detailing his COVID-19 response plans.

“We need to be honest: The next few weeks and months are going to be very tough, a very tough period for our nation — maybe the toughest during this entire pandemic,” Biden said Tuesday. “I know it’s hard to hear, but it’s the truth.”

    SCIENCE

The decision, apparently made in concert with the CFP management committee, hinged on playing a game in a venue that would allow at least family and friends of the participants to be in attendance. Representatives of the Rose Bowl game were rebuffed in their two appeals to state health officials to allow 400-500 spectators in a 95,000-seat stadium that includes more than 50 suites.

    These people are serious.

    Seriously fucked up.
