In bed, getting up early to get to work. Yay.

  2. Scruffy Nerfherder

In other resolutions, I’ve switched from my Google tracking device to an Apple tracking device.

At least Apple doesn’t have collecting data about me as their first priority.

    • Annoyed Nomad

NARRATOR: Apple’s second priority is collecting data about him.

    • Sensei

Remember the days of the Apple’s aluminium case and antenna-gate? It’s response was that you are holding the phone wrong.

Serious Warning Issued For Apple AirPods Max Users

I’m waiting for Part 2. You’re not wearing them right. I’m assuming it’s not sweat, but actually your body heat warming up the aluminum and the actual condensation.

  3. Surly Knott

Replying to a note from the dead thread —
Hayeksplosives, have you looked into the Low FODMAP diet? It’s provided substantial relief from my IBS. The ‘fodmaps’ are carbohydrates and are found in many foods, including flour. I buy gluten-free not to avoid gluten, which causes me no problems, but inulin and other fur tans in flour.

    • Surly Knott

Sigh. Fructans, not ‘fur tans’. Stupid autocorrect.

      • Scruffy Nerfherder

        Fur tans sounds better

      • Scruffy Nerfherder

I detect notes of fur tans with highlights of skin tones.

      • hayeksplosives

        Ah, the 70s!

      • Hyperion

Way back when we were still free.

      • Yusef, Frozen

        The 70s?, Good riddance,

    • kinnath

I have a friend that can’t handle fructans either. It’s a serious problem.

She has to be very aware of everything she eats.

On the bright side, the miracle of fermentation removes fructans from grape juice and leaves alcohol which she can consume without problems.

      • rhywun

Sorry to all the careful eaters out there… that sounds awful.

    • hayeksplosives

I will look into it. I’m a newb to the gluten thing. My low carb diet caused me to avoid gluten without particularly trying to.

I imagined that I do better with less gluten; I need to do it scientifically to be sure. I also happen to enjoy baking bread,, and since I need to keep my sodium low, I should be able to “design” the perfect bread for me.

      • Hyperion

I’ve tried every diet ever invented and I still stand by the claim that a vegan diet is the best diet for humans. No bias, I just know what I’ve personally experienced. I just don’t think it’s worth living 5 more years while having a really bad time for the rest of my life with my carnivore wife.

      • trshmnstr the terrible

It’s all relative. There is no perfect diet, and I’ve known people who got fat on vegan diets (carb overload) and people who got skinny without any particular plan.

I’m a carbo. Cutting out carbs makes me shed 2 lbs/week. I got a bit skinnier when I ate mostly vegetarian, but had the same results when I added in chicken and the occasional steak.

That said, I do think that learning to cook vegetarian or vegan is immensely helpful. If you can develop flavors without meat, then you have a wide palette to work from.

      • Nephilium

My niece went anemic on a vegetarian diet, I gained weight on a low carb diet. There’s no one thing that works for everyone.

      • Tulip

Me too in grad school. Iron pills are not fun.

      • Mojeaux

        I’m with you. BTDT.

      • Hyperion

I’ve tried low carb many times. It does result in rapid weight loss. But it also, for me, result in serious negative consequences, like low energy, and gout.

From the science I’ve researched, mind you, not the woke shit, your body really wants carbs for energy and it’s at the same time burned off more rapidly for energy it is less calorie dense than protein. I lost 60 lbs on a vegan diet. Never have had those results on a low carb diet, with zero bad effects, and I felt great.

But like you said, we’re all individuals and we can expect different results, unlike what the Borg tells us.

      • Sean

I’m not leaving keto. It was life changing and sustainable.

      • Tres Cool

I ate a handful of M&Ms today. Please forgive me.

      • Sean

        No judgement.

Though, I do typically source Lily’s or Asher’s no sugar chocolate options.

      • Mojeaux

        Gout is likely genetically linked.

Carbohydrates are NOT necessary for energy. Your brain can function on fat just fine.

Low-carb saved my life, makes my body not hurt as much, and I believe it is extremely beneficial to my mental health. In fact, I’ve been back on plan for the whole of 3 days and feel better. That is not to say I am not tempted by all the goodies in the house, but I’m getting older and my joints are screaming at me.

I am not arrogant enough to tell people that X diet is best for them. You do you, Hyperion, but vegan/vegetarianism is not the be-all end-all for the whole of the human population. Neither is low-carb.

As for anemia, I’m anemic even WITH iron pills. Going without red meat would make it worse.

    • hayeksplosives

Ok, I read about FODMAP. Oof. I don’t think that’s for me. I’m supposed to get lots of legumes, and I can’t imagine eliminating onion, garlic, celery, etc.

I might break down and actually seek my doctor’s advice before I make a big change.

      • Toxteth O'Grady

        No! Not that!

      • Surly Knott

Yeah, it’s not pleasant. I think it can be useful as an ‘eliminate then re-add’ process to find what particular foods are problematic. I know that for me, quantity matters; small(er) amounts are tolerated, big servings not.
I do miss onions, garlic, shallots, peas, pears, and apples.

  4. Q Continuum

    Dammit, dead thread. Reposting:

Once upon a time, Alaskan Brewery did not distribute to Colorado, but they did distribute to Wyoming. I absolutely *needed* Alaskan Winter Ale in one cold November (2006 or 2007?). This was during my time in graduate school. Along with a fellow grad student who originated from Melbourne, Florida, I made a road trip to Cheyenne to load up on ~$300 worth of Alaskan beer; bear in mind that this is a not insignificant sum to a starving graduate student so I was very committed to obtaining this beer. It was well worth it not only for the fact that the beer was (and is) delicious, but I plied the desk clerk from my apartment complex with it into coitus. This is the only woman with whom I’ve engaged in vaginal intercourse that has better tits than Mrs. Q; slightly larger, comparable perkiness but significantly smaller areolae which I value highly. Her personality left much to be desired. I did later receive oral sex from a woman whose tits were as close to perfect I could imagine; if I could design tits in a lab, I could scarcely do better than them. That’s a different story though.

In any case, my road-trip compatriot dropped out for, at the time, unspecified reasons. I later found out that the reason he left was his heroin addiction which I found out later had claimed his life. To this day I wonder how I could be blind to his addiction. It was a fun road trip though and he introduced me to Dragonforce. So this is dedicated to him.

    • Scruffy Nerfherder

I once had a girlfriend whose boobs levitated. They seemingly defied gravity and she required no bra. It was like that Seinfeld episode, “They’re real and they’re spectacular.”

      • creech

I was once informed that no bra was needed as long as a pencil put under the boob would fall to the ground. Thankfully, in the sheer blouse days, that “rule” was pretty much ignored.

    • DEG

Breasts and fucking women don’t fit this story.

      Sorry about your compatriot.

I have a relative that beat a heroin addiction. I didn’t know what was going on until I received an e-mail from my relative which started out along the lines of “I’ve been lying about a lot of things.” My relative had been busted for buying heroin somewhere in Philly between when my relative signed up for rehab and rehab check-in day. Just one last fix you know.

The e-mail came a day or two after the arrest. The folks at the rehab center, after my relative told them what happened, told my relative to come clean to relatives/friends/anyone my relative lied to. My relative did that.

Looking back on things, I don’t know that I would have noticed what was really going on. Some people can hide things pretty well. You shouldn’t beat yourself up over it.

      • Q Continuum

The last I saw of the guy was when he hadn’t shown up for class for a month and a few of us showed up unannounced to see what was up. He was strung out beyond belief watching Maury and it was, no kidding, the first time all of it came together. Up to then, I legitimately hadn’t put 2 and 2 together. We tried to get him to come with us for… some reason. We didn’t really know what we were going to do but we knew he was better off with us than in that apartment.

We were unsuccessful. He moved back to Florida shortly after that and the rest is, excuse the expression, history.

      • DEG

        Sorry.

    • Hyperion

      HATE, damnit.

    • Hyperion

I totally don’t know what that is all about, but it sounds like toxic masculinity, so I know it’s bad.

Pickup trucks are getting the vid now? This is really bad.

      • KOVIDKristen

They’re, like, “soon things will be back to normal!! YAY!”

I see no indications that anything will be back to normal.

      • trshmnstr the terrible

Beyond that, I think the most noxious part is the implied “try harder and then this will all be over”

      • rhywun

The religious overtones sicken me. (In general, not referring to this commercial that I haven’t seen.)

        We are fallen.

        Yeah, fuck you.

      • rhywun

        Or… undertones?

PS. This AWS commercial can go fuck itself, too.

        “We’re figuring it out.” ?

      • hayeksplosives

I’ll hold your hair back while you barf, and then you can do the same for me.

Is there really a receptive audience for that tripe?

      • Hyperion

“Is there really a receptive audience for that tripe?”

Yeah, there is. All the dead people and the other voters who cast their ballot for Biden at least 6 times.

      • Hyperion

Sure they will. The new normal. Where we tell you want to do and you obey.

    • KOVIDKristen

      Oh yeah…fucking hate those commercials.

Absolutely nailed the pizza tonight. Any criticisms would be minor quibbles. ??

    • rhywun

        Mmm, Rao’s.

I’m back to work tomorrow after a week off. Happily my daughters high school is going back to in person classes tomorrow. Hopefully it lasts.

  8. Rebel Scum

    Mother of the year.

Police in Wickenburg arrested a mother who allegedly assaulted three of her children who all had tested positive for COVID-19 and were not wearing masks, according to court documents.

Court docs say officers responded to the home on Dec. 26 when a caller stated Sarah Boone assaulted her children by hitting one in the face with an open hand, kicking another on the ground and picking up another child by their neck.

The caller said she did it because the children tested positive for coronavirus and weren’t wearing masks.

Police tell 12 News the children are between the ages of 5 and 14 years-old and they did not need to go to the hospital after the incident.

Police say Boone left the home after police were called and she was later found walking down a street.

When approached by officers, court docs say Boone did not respond to instructions and when officers tried to place her under arrest, she resisted, was taken to the ground, and was tased by officers.

I blame “news” media fear-mongering. Also this lady is insane.

    • Gustave Lytton

Silly rabbit. Punishing people for not wearing masks and getting infected is the government’s job.

    • The Gunslinger

Permanent cure for nervousness. Okay then.

      • pistoffnick

It’s SCIENCE!, Aloysious. Are you a SCIENCE! denier?

      • Aloysious

I, for one, didn’t know sticking things in your butthole was a treatment for asthma. I wonder if that works for other respiratory ailments.

      • J. Frank Parnell

Don’t give Fauci any ideas. Mask mandates are bad enough.

  9. Rebel Scum

I always knew you were a cunte.

All our basic rights and freedoms flow from a fidelity to the Constitution and the rule of law. This principle is not only fundamentally American but a central tenet of conservatism. Under our system, voters determine the president, and this self-governance cannot sustain itself if the whims of Congress replace the will of the people. I urge members to consider the precedent that it would set.

Efforts to reject the votes of the Electoral College and sow doubt about Joe Biden’s victory strike at the foundation of our republic. t is difficult to conceive of a more anti-democratic and anti-conservative act than a federal intervention to overturn the results of state-certified elections and disenfranchise millions of Americans. The fact that this effort will fail does not mean it will not do significant damage to American democracy.

The Trump campaign had ample opportunity to challenge election results, and those efforts failed from lack of evidence. The legal process was exhausted, and the results were decisively confirmed. The Department of Justice, too, found no basis for overturning the result. If states wish to reform their processes for future elections, that is their prerogative. But Joe Biden’s victory is entirely legitimate.

And to think I once defended your debate performance against Beijing Biden because, while you seemed like a sniveling weasel, you appeared to have your shit together and Biden was just being an ass the whole time.

    • Hyperion

      Suck donkey cock, Eddie Munster.

    • J. Frank Parnell

Remember when Democrats made commercials with Ryan pushing a wheelchair-bound grandma off a cliff?

    • Hyperion

Yeah… No, I don’t think so. One of them just murdered the other and no one ever found the body.

  10. Yusef, Frozen

  11. hayeksplosives

I just can’t believe this guy got elected.

Why didn’t the Trump campaign just run this as an ad?

    • Hyperion

Well, that’s because he didn’t, unless you count massive election fraud.

    • Rebel Scum

I just can’t believe this guy got elected.

Last night I discovered the lost first season of Somebody Feed Phil, a PBS version called I’ll Have What Phil’s Having. It’s the exact same show.

It made me wonder about Netflix’s model. The Last Kingdom started as a BBC series and then became a Netflix series. So do they find good content and then buy the rights to put it on their platform?

The fact that the Phil series are identical also made me wonder whether he controls the rights and just licences them.

    • Nephilium

    Man, the NFL.

That Raiders/Donks game, the Raiders really stunk it up. Carr looked off from the beginning.

That being said. That is one of the worst officiated games I have ever seen. All one sided. It’s excusable when they do it once or twice, which they do EVERY game, but it is not excusable when you continue do do it then entire game to the point it is obvious.

The Raiders should sue the NFL over that this and not one official on that football field tonight should ever be allowed to work in the NFL ever again.

Of course because it was a meaningless game, it won’t happen, but it SHOULD happen.

“ The ADL notes that, while not a white supremacist organization itself, some of its leaders have engaged in racist and anti-Semitic rhetoric.”

    • Rebel Scum

When “extreme” is a relative term and you define any political disagreement as “extremism”…

Speaking of DC and NoVa I was able to avoid both by taking a more scenic route home from Harpers Ferry that did not join I95 until Fredericksburg. There was a bit of traffic between there and 295 (to be expected…) but nothing like the crap north of Fredericksburg and around DC when we were traveling to HF for our New Years getaway. It sucks that I trusted the gf to navigate without checking the route possibilities myself. Lesson learned.

      • trshmnstr the terrible

That area is nice. If not for the proximity to DC, the concomitant insane housing prices, and the blueward drift of VA, we were seriously house hunting in the Warrenton area and points west.

Amazing how there is no way Hollywood would ever make a pro free market anarchist movie today. Instead we get these “Pat Robertson is taking over the world” propaganda flicks.

Fifteen years ago. In the middle of the Bush II administration.

The Reagan/Bush years (with the Moral Majority) were not that distant in the past.

Still a buffoonish representation of the Christian-right. But the movie was quite good from what I can remember.

      • straffinrun

Sure. Hated the Christian Right (populists) back in the 80’s. Today, they are more likely to be the purged more than the purgers.

My first time making some sushi rolls. Rice was right consistency but felt bland…straff? Some help?

    • straffinrun

I don’t make sushi. Sorry. Did you use the right vinegar?

      • Ownbestenemy

I think. I might have skimped on the amount added though.

Jiro is a great film. It’s a lot darker than it seems at first sight.

      • Sensei

As I mentioned below, I don’t like sushi, but I enjoyed the film. If you are a foodie and especially if you like sushi it’s highly recommended.

      • Contrarian P

It really is very layered. It’s a very human story and presented in a very neutral manner. I’ve watched it multiple times.

      • straffinrun

Try the vinegar with the Kombu dashi. Adds a little flavor. Next time, eh.

      • Sensei

Funny enough I don’t like it, but naturally everyone thinks I must.

Ownbestenemy – In addition to the rice wine vinegar straff mentioned did you “dry” it too? Also, you need to make sure you don’t mash it too much either. Naturally all my friends here love it and also make it at home. Sigh…

Crap. She was hot as a pistol.

I went through all of Season 3 of Cobra Kai in 2 days.

It’s amazing that they were able to get pretty much everyone from the original cast 30-some-odd years ago to participate in it (except for Pat Morita, who would be 88 if he were alive today, but he’s not because of chronic alcoholism).

I can’t think of another iconic 80s movie that had such a “normal” cast. Nobody OD’ed or DUI’ed into a tree. They all went on to live normal lives and start families.

I’m trying to think of another movie that even comes close to that. Maybe Back to the Future, but Crispin Glover is hardly “normal”.

Iggles fans advised to stay out of NYC; maybe be welcomed in D.C. land.

    • rhywun

Did anyone seriously think the Iggles had a chance? Holy mackerel, they sucked.

      • creech

The “Redskins” seemed pretty disinterested for a team fighting for the playoffs. Yes, Iggles kick the tying field goal, then leave Hurts in to see if he can engineer a comeback win and answer something about next year’s quarterback decision. Lots of Iggles fans hope Coach Pederson is gone by Tuesday, and Wentz by April 1st.

    https://www.usnews.com/news/politics/articles/2021-01-03/biden-inauguration-to-feature-virtual-nationwide-parade

Biden and his wife, first lady Jill Biden, will join Vice President-elect Kamala Harris and her husband in participating in a socially distanced Pass in Review on the Capitol’s opposite front side. Those are military traditions where Biden will review the readiness of military troops.

    ?‍♂️

Workers in recent days began dismantling an inaugural parade reviewing stand in front of the White House

    Why was it even erected???

The parade event will be televised and feature “diverse, dynamic” performances in communities across the country, the inaugural committee promised.

Great, so it will be as awful as an awards show.

    • J. Frank Parnell

      first lady Dr. Jill Biden

      Fixed

    • Chafed

It was erected to create jobs. You don’t hate jobs do you?

Yeah, it is going to be as boring as an awards show. But not to fear, we’ll be told by all the right people how great it is.

  24. Yusef, Frozen

    Howdy!

  25. Yusef, Frozen

    Texadus, movement of Ja people,
    Yep,

    • Festus

Why you do dat to my ears, Sean?

      • Sean

I’ll try to pick something more Festus friendly tomorrow.

      • Festus

I kid. Play what moves you!

    • Festus

      Mornin! Working today I’d assume?

      • Gender Traitor

        Good morning, gentlemen.

      • Festus

        Likewise, Red! How’s Tom T?

      • Gender Traitor

He’s doing very well, thanks. Able to walk around our one-story house some without the walker, and he’s studiously doing the exercises given to him by the physical and occupational therapists.

      • Festus

        Sean’s Avatar!

      • Sean

        Good news.

      • UnCivilServant

Indeed. I’ve already started cleaning up messes that popped up over the long weekend.

      • Gender Traitor

I have to post a payroll that includes two holidays and two half-days (the “eves”) for which anyone who worked from scheduled start to noon close will get paid for a full day – which supervisors invariably enter incorrectly in the timekeeping system. And I have to dive into month-, quarter-, and year-end reports. And after payroll posts, I have to enter everyone’s pay raises before the next payroll, when they go into effect.

I’m not fond of January at my job.

      • Festus

I never envied the timekeeper their job. At my company it seems to consist of rip the employees off just enough that they don’t burn the company down. I fudge when I can just to retain a semblance of Manhood.

      • Festus

It would be more interesting if Lady Red started adding and subtracting zeros at random, though.

      • UnCivilServant

Except this is a bad time for the employment consequences.

      • Sean

Except this is a bad time for the employment consequences.

I hired a new* guy last week!

*Sort of new. He worked for us as a temp a couple years ago.

      • Gender Traitor

Thanks for giving me the benefit of the doubt. ; )

      • Festus

I hear you from Saturday. It was a bear. Yesterday was surprisingly easy. Gonna snow today and make everything the worst again.

  26. Festus

This morning’s victuals will consist of curry-coated baked boneless chicken thighs, a green salad slathered in dressing and french fries cooked in the air fryer because Festus don’t abide with quinoa.

    • Festus

Sorry, should have been “Vittles”. The correct term is “vittles”…

      • Fourscore

I love me some vittles, 3X a day. Keeps a lad healthy, wealthy (in spirit) and alive.

Started the day off right by waking up, the rest is easy.

    • Festus

Yep. A cuck or a cunte? Choose your own adventure.

    • Trigger Hippie

Aspiring to be Little Mittens now, eh?

Oh, Tea Party. Your legacy has never been more ineffectual.

      • Festus

We have a “new” Tea Party Now!

      • Festus

Ten years down the line it will remain another neo-con soft-ball.
