Let’s go back to the morning thread about not being musically narrow-minded, now, shall we?

    • TARDis

Actually not bad. Hmm, who new? We were in Schwab Land with no American Teevee during that time. I had no Dukes.

      • Ted S.

        Daisy Duke is now 67.

Roatan. Been there, nice place, and no I did not overthrow any governments I just drank my face off and swam in the ocean.

I’m sure that’s what your cover dossier says.

They should be careful, the Freely-Jazz fued is bloody.

You know we can’t smell you through the internet, right?

I’m counting on it since I just got home a bit ago from the 8 mile ride home.

      • westernsloper

        Your loss.

      • TARDis

You said 10 miles, you lazy sack!

      • Nephilium

My planning didn’t measure the ride home correctly, so I wound up hitting only ~18 miles today.

      • C. Anacreon

        Your monitor doesn’t have Smell-O-Vision?

    • Chafed

Glibs Zoom seder could be interesting.

      • Nephilium

It would be a new experience for me. Us (lapsed) Catholics all had our own family traditions, usually involving alcohol and guilt. Mass was always the same, just different readings, psalms, and sermons.

  3. Aloysious

    Stevie “Guitar” Miller. Good call.

My soundtrack for this eeevenings links is a Mark Knopfler concert that appeared on the yootoobs the 26th. I’ve seen the outtake for Brothers in Arms, and it is fantastic.

    • Yusef drives a Kia

“Stevie “Guitar” Miller” never got that, he’s mediocre at best, writes a good tune for sure, but a player? no, and Hell no,

      • Aloysious

For me, he represents the memory of a certain summer, and a certain girl.

The memory is both good and bad. More good than bad.

      • Chafed

That I can respect. But Yusef’s analysis is on the money.

      • Don escaped Cancun

You can have any opinion about his play,

but you can’t say that he didn’t know his place in the pantheon. When Les Paul just drops by on various Sundays when you’re a little kid, you know the score early and exactly.

  4. DEG

That’s a problem, because scientists don’t believe the world can wait decades, much less centuries, to cut emissions.

    Heh.

I tapped out of the biomass article there.

    • Chafed

    • Urthona

      “scientists”, huh?

  5. Hank

“Christians often balk at “imprecatory” psalms, which ask God to curse and judge enemies. They appear sub-Christian, unloving, and mean-spirited. The problem is, imprecations aren’t rare in the Psalter. Forty or so psalms include prayers for judgment (5:8-10; 7:6-16; 9:19-20; 10:2, 15; 12:1-5; 17:13-15; 28:3-5; 31:17; 35:1-8; 40:13-17; 49:13-15; etc.), and others promise God will destroy his enemies without asking him to do so (e.g., 21:7-13). Excising imprecations would leave the Psalter as tattered as Jefferson’s edition of the Gospels….

“…The Psalter hands the Son’s rod of iron over to us, because the Psalter is a rod of iron. Singing psalms, we break teeth, blunt arrows, disable unjust hands, silence lying tongues.”

Hell, the entire Old Testament is heavenly wrath.

    • blackjack

Vengeance is mine sayeth the lord. Meaning it ain’t yours.

      • Hank

        Indeed.

“Dearly beloved, avenge not yourselves, but rather give place unto wrath: for it is written, Vengeance is mine; I will repay, saith the Lord.” Rom. 12:19

I wasn’t thinking of personal vengeance but about the lounge-act-style hymns in certain churches, and how it would add a little something to dip into what the article calls the “mean Psalms.”

      • trshmnstr the terrible

I’ve heard more than a few sermons with pastors trying to explain away “fear the Lord”. No, if you believe in the Abrahamic God, you should be very afraid. He doesn’t cotton to folks who give less than their best to Him.

    • Nephilium

Back when I was in Catholic school, each student in Religion class had to recite either a Bible verse or a prayer before class. The student responsible rotated around the room. This got changed when one of my friends read Proverbs 21-19.

I deny all responsibility for pointing that verse out to my friends.

  6. Chafed

I just tried Samuel Adam’s Cherry Wheat. It tastes like cough syrup. That’s the first Samuel Adam’s beer I thought was terrible.

    • Annoyed Nomad

Yes, it’s been years since I had it, but I remember the cherry flavor being so artificial.

      • Annoyed Nomad

Some breweries do collaborations with other breweries. Maybe Sam Adams did a collaboration with Luden’s.

      • Chafed

        That would explain a lot.

    • Nephilium

Yes. Yes it does taste like cough syrup. Also stay away from Bell’s Cherry Stout (if you even get that out there).

      • Chafed

This may have turned me off to every style of cherry beer.

      • Nephilium

As you like sours, look for kriek lambics. I’ve also had some quite good cherry wheats, but the Sam Adams one is not one of them.

  7. UnCivilServant

I’ve been watching the 1957 Perry Mason series, and it holds up better than more recent series of the same genre, even if you cen see the embryonic forms of some of the tropes that later got abused, it was far more subdued on those elements that became parody-worthy in later decades.

Plus, everyone is shady as hell, it’s like a sparring of antiheroes instead of the onesided nonsense of the formula imitators. Don’t know how much of that is Gardener’s work and how much is the series’ own contributions.

Only downside, because of the fashions and the black and white presentation, it’s difficult to tell the female characters apart from appearance, so if their voices are too similar, it becomes a bit of a problem.

      • DEG

        It’s a good song.

      • Sean

      • Francisco d'Anconia

The court’s been very good to the gun owner over the past decade +, and that was before 6-3

      • Chafed

I think Francisco is right. There are now 5 Justices who are realistically pro 2A. Roberts is going to have trouble keeping the genie in the bottle.

      • Hank

Maybe so…now what these 5 need to do is stay healthy and vigorous for…well, for quite a while.

      • Hank

And of course, if the filibuster goes we may see some court-packing to make the Court more “diverse” – in a progressive direction.

      • Sean

We must live in different universes.

    Speaking of Passover….

I’ve been reading through 1&2 Samuel and 1&2 Kings aloud to my wife. The last good king of Judah was Josiah, who completely eliminated the accoutrements for idol worship–idols to Baal in the temple, personal altars on the hilltop, etc.–and it is mentioned that the Passover had not been celebrated since the days of the judges. That implies that all through the days of Kings Saul, David, and Solomon, and their descendants, about 400 years, the Passover wasnt celebrated. I dont remember exactly, but it seems like some of the feasts were mandatory, and some weren’t. Maybe Passover wasn’t one of the required feasts. It isnt recorded that God ever complained about it, that I remember. He did complain about the failure to keep the Land Sabbaths (allowing the land to rest every seventh year), and gave it as the reason for Israel being in captivity for specifically seventy years.

    • Gender Traitor

Nostalgia ain’t what it used to be.

…but then again, it never was.

  17. KSuellington

Well, it looks like it may be an interesting F1 season. My favorite driver, Verstappen for Team Red Bull is in pole position tomorrow with Hamilton as number 2. It’s been all Mercedes and Hamilton for the last years so I’m hoping that he gets dethroned this year. A couple new young drivers to keep the midfield interesting. At this point I have largely ditched watching sports, but I’m looking forward to some good races this season.

    • slumbrew

Love to see “not Lewis” at pole. Max is a douche, but a damn good driver. Checo picking up right where Albon left off.

McLaren with 6 & 7 is interesting – I’ll be very curious to see how the Lando/Ricciardo pairing works out.

Excited for the season (plus a friend gave me his F1TV login, so that may suck me in even further).

      • KSuellington

I think McLaren has a solid shot at taking third place in the constructors championship. Ricciardo is a fun driver. Max not taking the knee at the beginning of the first race last year made me root for him harder last year, he is an exciting driver to watch. I like that he got Sergio Perez as a teammate this year. Tell me what you think of the F1Tv thing. I am considering ditching Comcast and going to internet only and if I do that then I will probably cough up the 30 bucks to get that so I can watch the season this year.

      • slumbrew

Agreed re: Max (and mostly nobody?) taking the knee. I fast-forwarded right though Lewis’ woke talk at the end of “Drive to Survive” episode 10 – he can fuck right off.

Just got the F1TV creds today but it’s pretty cool – you have access to all the individual driver feeds, radio, etc. I mostly watch the races delayed (I record them & watch them while I row, since the wife has no interest), so I’m not yet sure if those features are interesting in a non-live situation.

Dude who slid me his F1TV creds was saying 3rd will be McLaren vs. Ferrari, which would be exciting – I’ll be happy to see Ferrari return to some sort of form.

Haas ending up dead-last yet again is sad but not unexpected. It’ll be somewhat humorous if Mazepin is a total disaster – his dad brings the money, Haas needs money, so Haas bit the bullet, I suspect. (I confess I have a man-crush on Guenther Steiner)

      • KSuellington

Let me know if it’s worth it non live as I also generally watch it Sunday evenings recorded. As none of my friends watch it I can usually stay ignorant of the race details until I watch. I also dig Guenther and really can’t stand Hamilton (although he is a highly skilled driver).

‘One woman from Oregon tweeted how “almost every speaker” at the #StopAsianHate rally she attended Saturday is “experiencing fetishization from White men.” She said she has also experienced the issue since she was a teenager, as men have commented on her skin and breast size.

‘”They also said they prefer Asian women bc we are submissive, we take good care of our men, we are obedient,” she tweeted. This is part of reasons why most of my relationships ended bc I am none of those things. I will speak up, dominate, & break the rules. Stop fetishizing us. She called everyone in the neighborhood and told a bunch of lies to each about how the others had problems with me, so she deserved being told off. Anyway, she called the police and they came out and talked to me. They told me she was a problem and I need to watch myself or she’ll cause even more grief.

I just realized that I’m the only one around who can claim to have been hate crimed BY an Asian. Where’s my check?

” There is no widespread anti Asian violence. ”

This is the only thing I’m certain of.

I heard that the numbers went from around 3 to 20. That’s why they’re expressing it by percentages. Still barely a blip, but 600% higher. Also, they include every possible slight, no matter how small.

I don’t know if there’s *more* violence against Asians than before, or how much is directed at them in their capacity as Asians or in their capacity as people-with-money or targets-of-opportunity…but it’s generally not “whites doing it because racism and Trump!” which seems to be the scenario the media wants to exist.

      • slumbrew

Trump got 31% of the Asian vote in 2020, up from 27% in 2016.

I find it a compelling argument that _that_ jump is what is driving the “rise in anti-Asian violence” reporting.

      • Gustave Lytton

I’d buy that. Or just the latest divisive fomenting, with BLM losing steam and the need to constantly keep the needle on outrage.

The Yoots in Philly engaged in several mass shootings in the last few days. So, right after this is on the news is a story about something called “Tri-State K-9s” who bring in cuddly dogs to provide soothing therapy for the family and friends of those traumatized by mass shootings. O.K. whatever floats your boat. But these K-9s are being taken, not to ground zero Philly, but to the folks in Boulder, CO. Racist?

  20. hayeksplosives

I’ve a question for (((you people))).

If you keep kosher, are you allowed to get a pig valve installed in your heart? I don’t mean a one way gate for pigs, I mean an aortic valve sourced from a piggie.

    • hayeksplosives

The Mr Splosives is getting a new aortic valve on Tuesday.

It’s a bit of a risk, but his valve is so blown from the rogue infection that he’s gotten congestive heart failure from working so hard to compensate.

So we asked the doc if it will be a piggie valve or an artificial mechanical valve, and they said they get both ready and then decide once he’s cracked open and they see what’s what.

Ideally they would have done the valve replacement up through a leg vein at some later date when he’s back to full strength. But we can’t wait, so we are “all in”. Surgeons have to cut open the sternum and clean out any remaining infected tissue. The valve part only takes 90 minutes.

The fun part is seeing if the heart restarts with a defibrillator afterwards.

      Wish us luck!

      • Chafed

Wow. What a situation HS. Good luck to both of you.

      • hayeksplosives

Thanks, y’all. Ordinarily one does not take a decision for open heart surgery in just a couple of days, but the doctors racked and stacked the risks and said that if we didn’t do the surgery, he will die of congestive heart failure. So it’s a no brainer.

Fortunately Scripps in La Jolla has an excellent reputation for cardio surgery.

      • Festus

        So sorry to hear that.

      • l0b0t

Jeepers Hayek, I had no idea his situation had reached such a state. G/d bless and keep him and may he have a quick recovery.

      • Gender Traitor

Best of luck, and please keep us posted as much as you can!

      • Hank

Well, there’s a high-stakes situation, I’ll pray you get through it. Best wishes.

    • Chafed

Short answer: no, because it’s not kosher. Longer answer: you can break the law to save the law. If there is no other way to save the life, then it would be permissible.

      • hayeksplosives

There was a good stand-alone episode of Babylon 5 in which the human doctor Franklin knew he could save a young boy from another species and planet.

However, the otherwise routine procedure would have been a major religious no-no for his species. Dr Franklin tried to reason with the parents, but they were steadfast in objecting, even though their child would surely die without the procedure.

Dr Franklin made the controversial decision to do the procedure without telling the parents. We viewers generally were on Dr Franklin’s side and wanted the kid to live.

But then Babylon 5 reminded us that it was not Star Trek the Socialist Utopia Generation; B5 didn’t always end happy, and managed to stick in the mind while exploring morality, government, and personal freedom.

The episode shows Dr Franklin tending to the noticeably healthier kid after the procedure, and then the parents walk in. The mother wails and nearly collapses, and the father is equally horrified. They somehow can tell instantly that their child has been subjected to the procedure. In their view, Dr Franklin has interfered with the child’s soul. We the viewers are forced to face the possibility that our dismissal of the “silly” religious proscription, because the parents know instantly their kid is altered, and they grieve for him, even in his newly healthy physical body.

In the end, they euthanize their own kid to save his soul.

Good episode. Discomfiting , humbling. But memorable.

I didnt know Christian Scientists were their own species. Explains some things, tho’.

My Steve Miller story. Wifey once told me her mom once dated Steve Miller. She said every time he came through Boston, her mom (a BC undergrad), would go on dates with him. After mom was pressed for details, she copped to the fact that they were just banging.
