Saturday evening links of Spring is a sprungin’

My sinuses are about to go ape shit.

Howdy, Glibbies! Gorgeous weather here in manly time. Sorry for you folks on the other side of the Rockies. I’m sure it will be a light storm this late in the season.

Hey! Did you know there were birthdays today?

Prolly over exaggerated.

The grass is always greener on the other side of the desert.

I’ll just leave this here for you guys to snark and debate about.

No, this is mocking poor little Meg. And I’m sure they have zero fucks to give over the Twatter outrage, they’ve been shot at.

This is gonna light some hair on fire.

Now let’s do it someplace where it has real effect. Like all over the world.

Peace out, Glibbies.

    Snow? Meh.

    • westernsloper

I am sick of plowing it. I am ready for summer……..fuck snow!

      • UnCivilServant

I think you might be plowing it wrong.

      • Hyperion

Where he lives, it probably doesn’t matter how you plow it, it just drifts shut again.

  2. Gustave Lytton

Another wasted day of buying a side by side. First dealer said they had one, but it wasn’t there when they went to look. Might have been sold.

Second one texts me this morning asking if I was still going to come in this weekend. Show up after #1. One was allegedly sold this morning and the other is just not there and they don’t know where it is. Completely baffled. I know if I lost $10k of inventory, my boss would be like NBD. WTF would you txt me without checking your inventory anyways?

    • UnCivilServant

Isn’t “Know what you’ve got to sell” Business 101?

    • Animal

So, what kind of side by side?

      • LCDR_Fish

side by side = double barrel?

      • Animal

When you’re talking rifles or shotguns, yes.

      • OBJ FRANKELSON

        Double barrel rifle?

I would like a marvelous Animal piece on this. Please and Thank you.

      • Animal

Hmm. That would be an interesting piece, wouldn’t it?

      • LCDR_Fish

Now that I think about it, a lot of the old big game/elephant rifles were double barreled affairs.

      • Gustave Lytton

Not the real fun kind. Kawasaki Mule.

      • Animal

Ah. We’ll be looking for some kind of side by side ATV up in the Great Land, probably this summer. I really have no preferences as to brand, though.

      • Gustave Lytton

Went from Gator to Kubota to Polaris to Kawasaki and happy with what we see. They seem to be the only ones with a small wheelbase unit (SX) anymore. It just needs to move us around on small acreage and small loads. Don’t need 1000lb pneumatic dump or 2000lb tow or 6 passengers or go 65mph over sand dunes.

      • westernsloper

……or go 65mph over sand dunes.

How do you know until you tried it?

      • Animal

Noted. We’ll be likely looking for a two-seater with enough whump to pull a meat trailer.

      • Gustave Lytton

Yeah, I’d expect you want more of a hunting type for more rugged terrain. There are larger Mules or other side by sides that would work better.

Happy ending. First dealer salesman, although a bit put off from the not there model, seemed like a straight shooter in terms of their pricing and incoming inventory. Called them back about putting me down for one of their incoming and they’re going to order one on Monday with my name on it and email me the VIN.

  3. hayeksplosives

I’d like to know one example of Meghan Markle being disadvantaged by her African American roots.

    • UnCivilServant

It made her more vulnerable to people telling her she’s always a victim.

      • hayeksplosives

That would be plausible (that she’d been raised to think her race held her back) if she were not so obviously orchestrating her Royal Family grenade lobbing at every step along the way.

There are many descriptions one can make of the Suitcase Girl from Deal or No Deal, but victim isn’t one of them.

    • Hyperion

100% guarantee that if it was the best way for her to get attention, she’d be kissing royal butt right now. But since she’s convinced that coming to America and playing a victim is the best way to get attention these days, and sadly she’s right, that’s why she’s doing it.

I’ve talked to a few Brits recently and they say they’ll do anything to keep us from sending her back.

      • UnCivilServant

Eliminate their wokist and pro-lockdown viewpoints?

We’ll take care of the embarassment for them.

      • hayeksplosives

It’s nice to be able to follow the royals from afar and not have to pay for them.

Queen Liz is pretty universally liked or even admired. People remember her during WWII and through plenty since then.

Prince Charles OTOH has broken with tradition (constitutional monarch tradition) of not taking a stand on politics. Instead, he picked global warming and sustainable living as his pet causes. How tone-deaf do you have to be to declare yourself champion of a cause that is the antithesis of how you live your daily life?

Will and Kate are plain vanilla, just how the Brits like their monarchs. They might be ok if the monarchy survives that long.

But I suspect that once the narcissistic and self declared expert on architecture and sustainability takes the throne, there are going to be new calls to end the institution.

Meghan isn’t helping, but her husband got relegated to Minor Royal status the moment his nephew was born. Harry will just be a has-been posing as a great crusader; his actions and words have no consequence, and the Oprah interview tarnished his image even among Americans.

      • Gender Traitor

Tell them to un-f&@k-up Doctor Who or she’s on a plane to Heathrow tomorrow.

      • hayeksplosives

Ooh, GT us wheeling out the big artillery!

      • Hyperion

If I was supreme overload, she’d be back on that plane yesterday. Harry’s a damn fool, I hope they disown him and the wokeness ticket runs out.

      • hayeksplosives

Harry has always been considered a bit thick, but Meghan was bristling with red flags.

He’s either more stupid than we thought, or he likes drama like his late mother did.

      • Spudalicious

I think it’s more the emotional scarring from losing his mother than intelligence.

      • Hyperion

The problem I have with them, is that they have no idea about real life, the one most of us live in. Most people, at least at some point in their lives, have had to worry about their next meal, keeping a roof over their head, providing for their family, paying bills. These people have NEVER had to worry about any of that for one second in their entire lives.

When they’re ready to give up all their privilege and go live in the real world with the rest of us, then they can whine and cry victim, and even then it will not be appealing behavior. But what they are doing now is truly appalling, they’re a bunch of delusional assholes who need to shut the fuck up.

      • TARDis

“Dubai Sees Population Surging 76% on Lure of Beaches, Greenery”

Yeah, and I think if you can keep your mouth shut and stay out of trouble, you’ll be fine. Just be careful and don’t attract the gaze of the authoritah or you’ll get sentenced to 1000 lashes.

    • westernsloper

You need to be a “licensed alcoholic” with a state authorized “papers please” to buy booze there outside of the bars. *or at least that is the way it used to be* Praise Allah!

Fuck Dubai. It is a facade of bright lights and fancy buildings hiding slavery and oppression.

      • Hyperion

The reason I said that is there’s an episode of that locked up abroad where a British citizen was hanging out with some high society folk there and somehow he actually got introduced to some of the royal family. They asked him to get them booze, because you know, it’s illegal there for citizens but mostly legal for fureners.

So this guy went back to the UK and smuggled them in some liquor. And all was happy. Until it wasn’t. One day they broke down the door of his flat and started demanding him to show them the guns. He was like ‘I don’t have any guns’. So they beat him up and hauled his ass off to prison.

He somehow managed to get the Brits to get him out of there. But he was sentenced to 1000 lashes, for whatever he done. That’s one freaking thousand lashes.

So, no one should be fucking around over there.

      • Ask your doctor if BEAM is right for you

        One thousand lashes.

Otherwise known as “One of the most painful ways to execute someone we could think of.”

      • Hyperion

Yep. What I’m trying to say. If you’re over there, watch you step and don’t be thinking it’s some kind of bastion of liberty for you to play around in.

      • rhywun

Yeah, that is a part of the world I would never willingly visit.

      • Ask your doctor if BEAM is right for you

I’ve got a buddy who is gay and who visits (er, “visited”?) Dubai regularly for sales reasons. He goes to great lengths to make sure the people he meets there have no idea he’s gay.

Tunisia used to be a favorite spot for Brits and continental Europeans to go frolicking in the sun and surf, and their “Western ways” were tolerated by Tunisia due to the economic advantages.

But then some jihadi shot up a beach resort (i.e. foreigner playground) near Sousse and killed about 40 people, mostly brits.

That had a dampening effect on the holiday makers. I don’t know if things are “back to normal now” or if that’s even possible.

      • hayeksplosives

Sorry if someone posted this already…

If a Commerce Department report is delivered to Congress but isn’t covered by the mainstream media, and doesn’t get put on the departmental Web site, does it make a sound?

    From the report:

“The evidence does not show that during last decade, a time of expansive growth of electronic communications, particularly on the Internet and mobile devices as well as social media, there has been a rise in hate crime incidents.”

“…this research, and much like it, fails to demonstrate any causal relationship between increased social media use and increased violence. This research does not present even comprehensive descriptive data correlating increased hate speech on social media with increased hate crimes.”

“Further, this censorship poses real dangers to our political system. Under the hate speech prohibitions and other censorship rules, the platforms have removed content that many consider seriously engaged with pressing political and social issues.”

    https://www.breitbart.com/tech/2021/03/03/exclusive-unreleased-federal-report-concludes-no-evidence-that-free-speech-online-causes-hate-crimes/

    • hayeksplosives

We all muttered unhappily about “hate crimes” when relevant laws were being passed.

But we did nothing and so they passed. And now it’s worse to beat up an 83 year old black woman and rob her than it is to beat up an 83 year old white woman and rob her.

More alarmingly, it allows the stats to make inferences and speculations on what was/is going through the mind of the perpetrator.

That is scary territory. No one can know what I was thinking; the state can try to prove my actions, but not my thoughts.

That Charlie Hebdo cartoon is fucking hysterical. Nice to see someone still has the balls to do completely tasteless jokes.

If Apple is cloning other people’s work (they reported, without evidence) I think there’s already a remedy for that, no?

Also, I’m curious to know what business they are “dominant” in. Considering they are a hardware company and none of the products they produce are “dominant” in their category.

I suppose Google “dominates” search but not using them is as easy a typing a different URL into your address bar.

Microsoft’s “harms” were hashed out decades ago and it’s just as ludicrous today.

In short, this looks like the gummint wanting to wet their beak to me.

    • Nephilium

I believe Google’s current anti-trust issues have more to do with online advertising then search. Apple does have a monopoly on one thing… access to the Apple walled garden. In my mind, that should be permitted, but what do I know. On that side, there is some interesting jockeying going on with the Epic/Apple/Steam suit.

TLDR version: Apple subpoenaed a huge amount of sales data from Valve saying they needed that to defend against the Epic suit by saying that the market they’re being sued over is selling digital games, not just access to the Apple store.

      • rhywun

I’ll check that link in a moment, but…

As for the “walled garden”… every games console has one and I don’t hear anyone crying “anti-trust!” over it. It’s part of the package – neither Apple nor Microsoft nor Sony nor Nintendo wants their platform to be shit all over with worthless, buggy crap and users seems to appreciate that.

      • Nephilium

Yeah. Epic is not the good guys in this fight. While they’re complaining about the terms of service of selling their product on the Apple Store (all payment processing must be run through Apple, giving Apple their cut), they’ve got a more curated (and feature-less) game store then Steam does.

But on the console side, I believe that most of the curation there is in the online stores. I think with a developer’s license, you can release your own games on physical media that don’t go through them.

      • rhywun

Interesting stuff. I think only crazy people play games on a phone or tablet but I guess that’s just me.

  10. wdalasio

I hope nobody objects if I chime in with an advice bleg. As a lot of you know, my wife and I just moved from NYC to South Carolina. One of the things that we both wanted to do was get a gun. Today was a nice day out. We went to a gun store/range and tried one out for measure. We think we like the H&K VP9 for home defense. They let us try it out on the range and it was pretty fun to shoot. It seems like it might be a good choice for us. The wife seems to have trouble with the slide lock for a lot of semi-automatics. But this one seemed workable for her. And it seems like the 9mm is a somewhat available round. We’d considered revolvers, but it doesn’t seem like most are available in 9mm. Even absent availability, I’m concerned a .357 magnum might be a bit too much recoil for her. It sounds like they might be a little pricey. But, I see it as an investment.

    Any thoughts?

    • grrizzly

Most revolvers are DA/SA these days. There’s barely any recoil with SA.

      • wdalasio

        DA/SA?

      • Ask your doctor if BEAM is right for you

        Double action / single action

    • KSuellington

She can shoot .38 out of a .357 and when you want to you can shoot .357 out of it. Plus revolvers are cool and don’t jam.

      • TARDis

Also, easier to clean, like penises.

      • EvilSheldon

Revolvers absolutely do malfunction, and when they do, it usually requires tools and a vice to get them running again.

    • Spudalicious

Don’t just try one gun. Try several, to see if you can find something that you both like. 9mm will be fine for both of you.

Ammo is a shit show right now. Prices are almost triple what they should be. If you can find 9mm under 75 cents a round, buy all of it.

      • Spudalicious

A good price, but it’s steel cased TulAmmo. It’ll shoot just fine, but it’s dirty.

      • Not Adahn

Tulammo shoots cleaner than CCI Blazer by a long damn shot.

      • Spudalicious

No argument there. Although I would put PMC up there as well.

      • trshmnstr the terrible

        **Cough**

(promo code stpatricks10 got me 10% off, which brought my grand total to just a shade over 60 cents/round)

    • R C Dean

I believe 38 Special, a lower recoil round, will sub for 357.

      • wdalasio

True. But it sounded like 9mm ammo was a lot more available. We’re both going to need a lot of range time.

      • Not Adahn

It was, and will be. Right now everything is hard to find.

    • EvilSheldon

The VP9 is an *excellent* choice, especially for a new or beginning shooter.

I don’t like revolvers in general, and I really don’t like them for beginners. Details upon request. But seriously, go with the VP9.

    • Muzzled Woodchipper

Don’t focus much on the slide release RIGHT NOW.

As it’s a new gun, almost all of them are a bit tight to navigate, but they free up with some use.

      • Gustave Lytton

However, what is your wife’s grip strength? My wife had that issue with her first Glock and never got better. She loves her Walther P99.

    • Sean

      The VP9 is quality hardware.

Also, one gun for two people? You each should have one. ?

      • wdalasio

Agreed. But, one step at a time. One step at a time.

I figure if we get one we both like to shoot, she’ll be easier to convince on #2, since it will mean I won’t either be hogging the gun or bothering her for my turn. After that, of course, hunting guns are just a natural progression.

      • TARDis

So knockdown drag out fights are more interesting (and equitable)?

      • wdalasio

No. But, “Honey, let’s get a gun” then “Honey, let’s just get another” seems a lot easier sell than his and hers. Especially to a girl who’s lived in New York for 26 years.

      • TARDis

I was being my usual self. But seriously, the first several pistols should be ones that both of you are comfortable with.

      • Rebel Scum

        Don’t startle her…

      • westernsloper

Why do you think Suthen taught himself to cook so well?

      • TARDis

I keep a .38Sp next to me for the same reason. 00 is in the closet. No movie bullshit. Not going the ratchet it. Shell is already chambered. Safety off. Then boom.

      • Count Potato

Wouldn’t call it movie bullshit. I once scared off an intruder with the sound of racking a shot gun. Which is way better than having to fire it.

      • DrOtto

“All you’ll see are assholes and elbows” – the guy who sold me my shotgun on the merits of having to rack it.

      • TARDis

If I’ve already emptied my revolver, there will be no other warning. Assholes and elbows indeed. All over the walls and carpet.

      • Ask your doctor if BEAM is right for you

        That’s a shame.

The sound of a 12-gauge being chambered is one of the most bowel-loosening sounds I can think of. By itself, it would probably end a potentially deadly encounter before it started, as the house invader ran like Hell to get away from the source of that noise.

    • Not Adahn

9mm will be the first cartridge to recover when the silliness ends. There is a reason it’s insanely popular.

    • Not Adahn

Find a gun club. They all have a women’s league or something similar. Then the two of you can get into shooting sports!

  11. Rebel Scum

Had to spread some gravel today. Spreading gravel sucks. Especially since they brought the wrong kind and I didn’t look at the invoice so I didn’t know before the guy dumped it and I saw a lack of granite dust that was supposed to be accompanying it. Oh, well. It’ll still work and I might get more in the fall anyway since it wasn’t quite enough to cover the areas of the driveway I wanted to.

    • robodruid

I’ve got two gravel piles, and one dirt pile.
      I share your pain.

    • Hyperion

      No tractor?

      • Rebel Scum

Nah. Drive is only 2 cars wide by 2 cars deep and the guy dumped it in swaths so I mostly just had to rake it out. What he accidentally got in the road was a bitch to get into the driveway though.

      • Hyperion

Oh. I’m no stranger to shoveling gravel. But when I got a tractor, it went from grueling labor to an excuse to have fun.

    • wdalasio

I did some of that last weekend (granted only a few spots). It’s tough work.

    • Spudalicious

Quarter bye with dust? I hate that stuff.

      • Rebel Scum

I kinda needed to have to rehabilitation for the driveway since I have been lazy and let it get into sorry shape. So I figure that would help it reestablish.

      • Spudalicious

It’ll do just fine, I just don’t have fond memories of my couple of encounters working with it.

      • Fourscore

Great choice of music tonight, Spud. I have the Willie doing Gershwin CD but truthfully it’s not my favorite. Willie was a younger man when he was with Kenny for that recording.

    • Semi-Spartan Dad

The driver won’t spread the gravel for you? Our guy puts a bar in the back of the truck that controls the spread so the gravel drops where we want.

    • Muzzled Woodchipper

We badly need rock for our driveway, but the shit is so damn expensive.

      • Suthenboy

It is not expensive. It is free.

Today, Sat. March 13, is the last full 24-hours that I’ll spend in the US for quite a while.

I again return to Korea. This is Take 5 there. Throw in Singaporean and Thai life-changes as well. But I’m 95% done packing up my life. It’s by design small, but it’s still fun and shocking to look at. I’m landing to what I know best. Time to take it on with gusto and accord.

Ev Version 2..0 is here and it’s starting oh-so soon. Hard to think about all of the details and packing your whole life up and worrying about forgetting anything..especially when one is noted to have pretty severe memory issues. But I’m actually much more calm than one would expect. It’s time to go on, and I’m actually going to land in the cushiest way possible. But. I’ve been defeated before by the ides of reality, and know that it could happen again. But I’ve got everything in my hand and ready to go. It’s all on me to actually do it and succeed. I’m quietly quite confident. But I must take that step.

Here we go, fellas. You guys are the best. This is hands-down my favorite place. All of you, your quirks and expertise are quite fun to try and absorb. I hope that my experience can be an equal spark onto others, for whatever reason.

So, are you leaving Sunday, March 14th, or the following day? Both fit your ambiguous description.

Hagler, Leonard, Duran, and Hearns, some of the truly great days of the sport of boxing.

      • The Hyperbole

Yep, I stopped following it in the aughts, so it’s possible there have been better fights since but the late 70’s-80’s had just one great bout after another.

      • Hyperion

Well, sure, there’s been plenty of great fights since, but it’s hard to equal that era for the middle weight division.

      • Ozymandias

And the heavyweights had Ali, Frazier, Foreman, and Norton around the same time. It was the heyday of the sport.
Do you remember how HUGE a cultural moment it was for the entire country whenever Ali fought?

    • Ozymandias

My favorite middleweight of that era and one of my favorite boxers. Dude was a train.

“Why Britain needs a written constitution”

The author doesn’t seem to give any concrete, specific reasons why this is so. But she does manage to mention that she just published a book about modern constitutions of the world.

In a way, I sympathize. She wants to promote her new book, and an article with a current-events angle will alert readers that the book exists. And she shows familiarity with UK constitutional history.

Yet as for identifying specific issues and describing how they would be dealt with better under a written constitution than…whatever you call what they have now…the article isn’t so good from that point of view.

    https://www.ft.com/content/bf81ea49-96b0-4329-bbaf-f58fdf6e0630

    • Hank

Wait – the article didn’t have a paywall the first time I checked!

Constitution? Those things were written by slave owning WYPIPO like 100 years ago. Why would they want that? Look how bad that made the USA. We had to build a wall to keep people in.

A written Constitution (as we have seen from the U.S., France and [as of 1982] Canada) doesn’t have any additional value, as far as I can tell. Wanna violate the Constitution? Go ahead!

Brooks stated that he thinks there is a possibility of bipartisan compromise, but “The question to me is, Democrats, do they really want to? They hold the power here. Do they really want to? Or do they regard the current Republican Party as so illegitimate, it’s not worth compromising? And I think that sentiment is really the guiding force within the Democratic Party right now.”

Republicans should have to wear some sort of identifier, such as a yellow patch.

      uh, what?

How did she not get stung to hell and back? Those are some chill bees.

      • Suthenboy

Bees like people. They like to light on you then smell and taste your skin. They also have a tendency to crawl up. If they crawl under your clothing you will move and the fabric will press on them causing them to panic. That is when they sting – when they think they are being aggressed. Bee suits are not sting proof, they are just built so that bees cant get inside your clothing.
If you are calm and non-fearful (bees can smell adrenaline. If they think you are afraid they figure you are up to no good) you can handle them without being stung.
There is a zen to handling bees. It can be one of the most calming kinds of work you can do.

        Bees like people

YMMV. I’ve worked with hives that were very docile. I’ve worked with hives that wouldn’t let me get within 50 feet of them.

Supposedly darker hair makes the bees less docile (reminds them of bears) , and I believe it. I’ve gotten stung 100 yards from an agitated hive that my fair haired grandpa could walk right up to.

      • grrizzly

I must have picked a picture of a light brown bear for my avatar for a reason.

George Dickel Rye – yeah or nay? I like Bulleit FWIW.

Dickel is very good and is made by the same people as Bulleit from what I understand, just filtered like Tennessee whiskey. For the money it can’t be beat IMHO.

      • Chafed

Thanks. I’ll give it a try.

I, a stranger, will probably not hit the right note in trying to console you, but at least you will be able to laugh at the very clumsiness of my efforts, and realize that if some random person is inspired (however bumblingly) to try and cheer you up, maybe you’re worth something.

So here goes, if you’re still reading.

I doubt we’re here by accident. Even if we don’t know the exact reason we’re here, we can safely bet it wasn’t for the purpose of despairing. And I can certainly talk about lost loved ones – we can draw on our memories of them for inspirational purposes, and isn’t that what they themselves would wish we’d do with their memories? Use those memories to inspire good deeds? They wouldn’t want their memories to be the occasion for our tormenting or hurting ourselves.

I only speak so boldly because you put out this question to the whole universe, so I’ll be one of those who attempts an answer.

    Because…because why not?

“Meghan Markle will use the furore over her interview with Oprah to launch a political career which could take her all the way to the White House, if rumours circulating around Westminster last week turn out to be accurate.

“One senior Labour figure – a veteran of Tony Blair’s Downing Street administration with strong links to Washington – claimed to The [Daily] Mail on Sunday that Ms Markle, 39, was networking among senior Democrats with a view to building a campaign and fundraising teams for a tilt at the US Presidency….

“A source said: ‘The Blairite, internationalist and Democratic party networks are buzzing with talk about Meghan’s political ambitions and potential backers.’…

“The source added that the presumption was that the Duchess was eyeing 2024, when President Joe Biden will be 82 and deciding whether he wants to run for a second term.”

knows nothing = breath of fresh air, enthusiastic can-do spirit

lack of charisma = more charisma than Biden

unsympathetic = a black American girl who followed her dreams.
