First, many thanks to those who donated last week. Cancer absolutely blows–ask me how I know!–and my local relay team was entertained by the colorful names donating to our team. Meanwhile…

Did he ‘saw’ that?
It’s a satire site. They usually put words into people’s mouths, usually as an exaggeration of what they’ve actually done/said.
They are usually a little closer to the mark, which is why I wondered if he had said something that I had missed. That’s a bit of a stretch, even for them. There’s got to be a touch of truth to make satire work.
They are usually closer to the mark, but they do from time to time get a bit crazy, as most satire sites do, such as the (imo hilarious) article about Trump becoming King of England.
Brutal.
I know I’m super OT but I got my Illinois FOID card today!
And to not be an complete ass, from the link above one of the worst marriage advice I got was from stupid young dude at church who told me that I need to make my wife submissive according to Ephesians because I’m the man and also if I let her do what she wanted, she’ll eventually cheat or something like that.
I didn’t take that advice.
I didn’t want to get an eye graze from Swiss.
*squints suspiciously*
See my comment below. Keep your word. That is all you can do.
“I know I’m super OT but I got my Illinois FOID card today!”
Congrats!
The fuck is a FOID card?
State permission slip for gunz.
Firearm Owners Identification
An unconstitutional infringement on the right to keep and bear arms. It stands for Firearm Owner Identification.
Friends of Illinois Deplorables?
It’s a piece of paper from the state of Illinois that grants the right to keep and bear arms.
Bzzt. Illinois cannot grant the RKBA.
It is a document useful in the defense of any action taken by Illinois to further infringe your RKBA. It is also useful in acquiring firearms through licensed channels. The licenses are themselves documents that are useful by the sellers in the defense of any action taken by the Illinois or the federal government to infringe the right to buy or sell firearms.
“Bzzt. Illinois cannot grant the RKBA”
*Insert Rainier Wolfcastle “That’s the joke” gif here*
FOID? Firearm Owner ID? Is that like a CCL permit?
Pretty sure it only lets buy a gun, not carry it.
Yeah, separate CCL. It took me longer to get my FOID card than to get my CCL. Go figure.
For those of us not from IL, what’s a FOID card?
Congrats Ed!
I know I’m super OT but I got my Illinois FOID card today!
Congratulations!
It’s a shame Illinois is backwards and makes you get that thing.
The quiet part, he said it out loud.
Frum is a fucking authoritarian piece of shit. He’s the kind of asshole who would have volunteered to work for Beria during the 30’s and be proud of his actions.
Yeah, he sucks. Bush II and his toadies seem to be almost all lefties in disguise.
Can we deport him back to Canuckistan?
I’m all for it.
So much this. He is the statist’s statist.
I get it: Ignorant right-wingers like them some guns; also, ignorant right-wingers refuse to get vaccinated.
Best reply: “Your other idea was the Iraq war, so maybe cool it on the ideas for a bit.”
Idea: make the vaccine passport a precondition for abortion and birth control. Think of the risk of not having one poses to pharmacists and abortionists!
Cool. I support any idiotic plan that results in a greater share of the population obtaining ghost gunz.
*shrug*
I have plenty of guns already, so you’re pretty well fucked on idea one, and I’m perfectly happy to roll dirty, so there goes idea two down the shitter. Maybe stop pretending that you’re smart, huh Davy?
Idea: make the vaccine passport a disqualification for publishing opinion pieces.
Make it a requirement for voting.
marriage advice: Keep your word at all costs. It isn’t complicated.
Seat down!
Why do we have to put the seat down for them? I say leave it in the position you last used. Equal rights!
Thoughts and prayers.
When I first remarried, I tried to put up a fight on why do I need to make sure the seat is down! Then I was getting ready for work one day and I had no clothes that were clean and I realized, its a small gesture that reaps greater rewards.
30 years in December, brother. I may be dumb, but I ain’t stupid.
It must have been 25 years or so ago, but I still remember my dad forgetting to put the seat down and my mother falling into the toilet during the middle of the night. Her yelling woke me up.
Or it might have been Dad’s laughter.
45 years.
Last person leaves it where they needed it to be.
This little problem is why I like to point out that it is women, not men, who run the world. Without them, there would be nothing cause we would just be flinging shit at each other while talking about the old days.
Not ALL of us, OBE.
Tonio just cause you will be better dressed and groomed doesn’t make it less true.
OBE….you are right, without them there would not be any point.
Obligatory.
Remember me as a martyr for the cause!
This has been solved:
A Game Theoretic Approach To The Toilet Seat Problem
A statistical deep dive would be interesting. It comes down to how much 1 and 2s men and women do. I’d bet following the policy of leaving the seat in the position you last used would favor the women having to move the seat to the needed position less. Does that make any sense… It’s been a long day.
I will not comply!
I think seat AND lid down is the fairest approach – both parties have to lift something.
And it keeps the cat from falling in the toilet when it’s trying to get up on the vanity.
That’s what we do at our house. Partly for the same reason.
Also addressed in the above paper:
I’ve tried that argument, but with the reasoning that it keeps the dog from drinking out of the toilet. It didn’t work.
And it keeps the dog from drinking from the toilet bowl, usually just before slobbering on you.
Wonder Dog does not drink from toilets. In all seriousness, she will only drink fresh cold water drawn from our water fountain. Not that she’s spoiled.
SP and I avoided the dilemma by having separate bathrooms.
Your dog has its own bathroom?
Earth.
SP and I avoided the dilemma by having separate bathrooms.
The most libertarian solution to the problem.
The lock on Mrs. Dean’s bathroom does not recognize my fingerprints.
I just find it amazing that there are people who don’t lower the lid, every time.
What is hell is wrong with those people?
Yeah, I don’t get it. I’ve had enough times where I was glad it was down (towel falls off the rack, watch falls off the counter, etc) that I couldn’t do it any other way.
Don’t you animals know that indoor flush toilets spread COVID?!
I am reminded of an old Taxi episode where some folks fresh to America from Latka’s home country are appalled to learn that Americans go to the bathroom INSIDE THE HOUSE!!!
Lid down, actually. That way things don’t accidently fall into it and sewer rats can’t crawl out as easily.
WTF is wrong with you savages? A real toilet puts the seat and lid down when you’re done automatically, along with rinsing and deodorizing. And opens the lid and rinses the toilet when you approach. Night light optional. Y’all might as well be squatting over an open pit and wiping yourself with your left hand.
Ah, you’ve been to my house. I don’t remember your visit, but then, I am getting on . . .
Funny, in my house, it’s my wife who won’t put the seat down.
I guess in Brazil, in case there’s an anaconda, you have a chance to see it first.
^^ Yep. Everything else falls into place behind that bit of advice. She knows you are going to screw up, you know she is going to screw up, but if you are keeping your word and working towards that common goal, you are right as rain.
I must admit to being a sitzpinkler. I just take the time to do a little light reading or gaming on my phone. It’s a little more me time than a stand and deliver.
Interesting on several levels:
Psychologist at Minnesota sex offender program charged with sexually assaulting two clients
Minn. Sex Offender Program psychologist assaulted 2 male clients, complaint says.
https://www.startribune.com/psychologist-at-minnesota-sex-offender-program-charged-with-sexually-assaulting-two-clients/600049133/?refresh=true
Sounded like it was consensual between two adults. Why is that a crime?
Because she didn’t swallow?
When one of the parties is a government official who can fuck the lives of the “client” on a whim there is an implied threat for noncompliance.
I want to see her on a sex offender list and not get special treatment.
Reminds me of a story I have from years ago. I had a friend who was always getting into trouble. OK, I had more than one friend who was always getting into trouble. But this guy had gotten busted several times for drunk and disorderly conduct, DUI, etc, etc. It was of course always about drinking. So they sent him to some classes for substance abuse, again.
Anyway, the guy who was his substance abuse counselor made the front page news one day. He was out riding his motorcycle and some guy driving a pickup hauling a boat, went to turn into his driveway and swerved into the guys bike, knocking him to the ground. So he gets up and when the guy pulling the boat got out, he pulls out a gun and shoots him dead. There were also two people who had come out onto their front lawns to see what was going on, and he shot both of them dead too. Got back on his bike and rode off. Apparently when they caught him, he had a BAC of over 3.0.
Irony, yeah?
…who thought he was supposed to be a substance abuse instructor?
Teen 1 and Teen 2 both secured jobs at 16. Good, they need to get the hell out of the house. One is going to be a shopping cart hauler and the other working at a sandwich shop.
Teen 2 has a dilemma. His crazy, maybe dead, I don’t know haven’t heard from her in a year mother, lost his SSN when she ran away from the cartel (I am assuming given where she lived when I took custody of my boys). Then COVID struck and its near impossible to get a SSN for a minor without about as much paperwork if you were opening a marijuana lounge.
The sandwich place wants to physically see it, but I can provide the number. He has his learners permit, has insurance, is alive, has a birth certificate, why do you need the SSN?
Because Fed Gov requires it and the fines and hassles aren’t worth it to the sandwich place.
Now they aren’t required to worry about the authenticity so technically you could make one with crayons as long as it has the right number…
I get that, but I can supply you one and back it up with a 1090/1040 and insurance…so why do I need that little card.
Because Fed Gov doesn’t have those documents on its “approved list”.
Just when I thought I got rid of crazy, crazy comes back as a ghost and bites me in the ass. I have been successful on telling businesses that I cannot get his SSN cause of COVID, so I might be able to here while they have it on file just need a copy once he gets it.
If they were audited, it would pop his name (we run free credit checks on their names) and they wouldn’t get in trouble.
Dude, I’m sorry to hear you’ve had to go through all of that.
Don’t be, he and his older brother are in a much better place now. I kick myself believing her bullshit but fear of her disappearing with them made me coddle it.
It’s the easiest/most commonly used of the I9 form’s “list C” documents to verify. They can also take a birth certificate or a receipt for the application to replace a lost card.
Just remembered, if he has a passport, he doesn’t have to show a SSN card. That satisfies the “list A” requirement and nullifies lists B & C.
All lost with the crazy ex…she lost all their childhood stuff. Ill work it out.
Because that’s what the form tells them. Everybody is dying for help – my guess is you can come to some arrangement.
Yeah. I will go give the manager the spiel on why he doesn’t have the physical card if need be. Seriously, have you seen what you need to get a minor a replacement card? Adult is go online and request…minor is insane amount of paperwork.
If you have the number, can’t you just call the SSA and have them issue a new card? May need to go in in person…
Teen 1 and Teen 2 both secured jobs at 16.
Good, hopefully you get Teen 2’s dilemma straightened out.

“Covid strikes again.”
That’s the region my friend lives in. I feel badly for her, but in general she has fewer restrictions than I do here in metro NYC/NJ.
https://www.npr.org/2021/04/23/990230017/caitlyn-jenner-announces-run-for-california-governor
Caitlyn Jenner, the Olympic gold medalist with a reality-show family, announced Friday that she will run for governor of California. The state’s Democratic governor, Gavin Newsom, is likely to face a recall election this year.
So which name is in the record books now?
I’m no fan of Newsom — but I can’t shake memories of the Governator when it comes to celebrities promising to clean up CA state government after a recall.
The Governator hand wrote (or at least an intern) a note back to one of my kids way back. He still has it.
If Caitlyn was a woman, wouldn’t her winning the Men’s Decathlon be fraudulent?
Looks like they’ve painted themselves into a corner with that “dead naming” prohibition, where you’re not supposed to ever, ever use the name on that individual’s birth certificate because they are no longer that person. Caitlyn would not have been eligible to compete in that event at the time it occurred, so should forfeit the title and all mention of it. You get to keep your HS and college diplomas, and anything else not gender related. The records should still show the event as having been won by one Bruce Jenner, but should be followed by DOB and date of transition, as if the person had actually died, ie “Bruce Jenner (born 19xx, transitioned 20xx).”
We actually looked this up a few weeks ago. The IOC still deadnames xer as “Bruce” in listing who won the decathlon.
So triggering I literally can’t even
You know… morons
Despite living through one of the most politically and racially divisive eras in U.S. history, the youngest of voting-age Americans — especially those of color —appear more hopeful about the country’s future than they were four years ago, a new poll released Friday finds.
The Harvard Youth Poll of 2,513 Americans between the ages of 18 and 29 conducted from March 9 to March 22, found them expressing significantly more optimism than in the months after Donald Trump became president.
In answer to the question: “At this moment, would you say that you are more hopeful or fearful about the future of America?”, 56% said they are “more hopeful,” compared to 31% who answered that way in a 2017 poll.
The change from four years ago was particularly dramatic among Blacks – 72% compared to just 18% in 2017 — and Hispanics, 69% who said they were “more optimistic” as opposed to 29% previously.
“As millennials and Gen Z become the largest voting bloc, their values and participation provide hope for the future and also a sense of urgency that our country must address the pressing issues that concern them,” said Mark Gearan, director of the Harvard Kennedy School’s Institute of Politics.
They just want to be saved from self-ownership. The Social Contract means Big Nanny will provide.
I am beginning to despise more and more of my fellow Americans every day.
Seems like a good time to pimp my old article demonstrating that youthful political opinions are not set in stone. What the millennials and Gen Z want now does not reflect what they will necessarily want in the future, when they realize they have to pay for it.
their values and participation provide hope for the future
God, I hate journalists.
Which would be what?
Free shit, mostly.
It is like they lack observation and critical thinking skills and are subject to propaganda.

Two hours into the smoke and done with throwing hickory/cherry wood on so I went to the store to get all the other stuff I need for my feast tonight. We have a favorite checker and I was telling her what was for dinner and she said “I think your liquid smoke bottle broke”. Nope just me, I have been in the fire all morning. Its like crack to the cougars I tell you. Carnal in nature I guess.
Nice. We just trimmed up the orchard so I have fresh pear, apple, peach, and cherry branches to use this spring and summer. I usually buy the wood chips and am looking forward to seeing if there’s a noticeable difference.
I have grown fruit trees for decades. Nothing tops apple wood smoked pork chops.
Okay beer reviewers, here’s one for you:
https://www.thedenverchannel.com/news/local-news/colorado-based-new-belgium-is-brewing-a-beer-of-the-climate-ravaged-future-and-its-not-great-for-a-reason
“New Belgium, a brewing company based out of Fort Collins that is reopening its taproom Thursday, is launching a bland futuristic beer for Earth Day that makes an unpalatable point.
The company announced its new Fat Tire beer, called Torched Earth Ale. It mixes ingredients that would be plentiful in a “climate-ravaged future,” such as “smoke-tainted water, drought-resistant grains, shelf-stable extracts and dandelion weeds,” according to its website.”
………
“”It tastes terrible,” [CEO] said. “The ingredients in this product were things that we think, unfortunately, are going to be endemic to beer production as we look out 10, 20, 30 years.””
Click for a several-hundred-word advertorial. And the CEO warns we only have 8.5 years to save the Earth!
Crosses Fat Tire off my “staple beers that are in the fridge when friends are over” list.
???
They think this after surviving the worldwide hop shortage in the 00s?
Get woke, go broke. Every. Single. Time.
“”It tastes terrible,” [CEO] said. “The ingredients in this product were things that we think, unfortunately, are going to be endemic to beer production as we look out 10, 20, 30 years.””
LOL. Even under the worst-case predictive models, at 30 years out the planet will basically be the same as it is now. And even if the temperature gets hot enough to melt all the ice (and thereby end the current ice age), we’ll just be back to the normal temperatures the planet enjoyed back when the dinosaurs flourished – hardly a situation devoid of good agricultural products.
No you aren’t listening! You won’t be able to have your ‘craft’ beers anymore! Readjust your skullcap and get outraged!
Yeah, well, how was the beer back in dinosaur times, smart guy?
“10, 20, 30 years”
How specific….
Yeah, and about as scientific as the guesses by actual scientists, like Al Gore or Greta, on when the world is going to end. Guesses they’re repeatedly made over at least the last 50 years.
You’d think they’d learn to make guesses with longer timespans at this point.
By a 2 to 1 margin, young Americans expect their lives to be better under a Biden presidency (40%) than worse (19%).
No shit, Shirley?
They think he’s going to wave his magic wand and erase their college debt. And raise the minimum wage. They’ll all be rich!

These TDS codes are tedious. It should not take an hour to fill out a timecard.
Our federal system has a default distribution which fills out my timecard automatically and then I only have to make the minor adjustments for the week.
A recent pointless reorganization wiped out all the codes I used to use, so I not only had to itemize my time, but find the new codes in a shitty interface.
I had 19 TDS codes before. Now I think I have 21.
Have they ever given you a rationale for itemizing your time? I mean you work for the government so presumably there’s no customer billing involved.
Yes, but what about the TPS reports?
Did you get the memo?
A friend of mine was in a new job and made a crack about “TPS reports” during a meeting – he got a very stern reply from his manager, “Michael, what are you talking about? The TPS reports are a _completely_ different system”.
It was not a jolly place.
Was his last name Bolton at least…please tell me it was Bolton.
Sadly, no. O’Brien.

What’s the worst marriage advice you’ve gotten?
OMG that article. It’s like 5 parts people completely missing jokes/half-serious advice, 5 parts people sitting one-foot-in, one-foot-out on their marriages, 3 parts laughing at those icky Jesus folks and their backwards views of marriage, and 2 parts actual horrible marriage advice.
I don’t know that I’ve ever gotten truly horrible marriage advice, but the best advice I got was “If you think it’s a 50/50 split, you’re terribly misguided. It’s 100/100. Sometimes you’ll both be giving 100% and you’ll both feel like you’re the only one giving effort. You’re not.”
Isn’t that precious.
Sounds better than their regular beer.
No cockroach extract? Because they’ll till be around.
They should release a beer called Navelgazer made with the smell of their own farts.
I take it they don’t have any shareholders.

“A Michigan state lawmaker threatened to call Governor Gretchen Whitmer on cops who arrested him after he crashed his car while drunk, according to a police report.
Rep. Jewell Jones, 26, is accused of driving at twice the drink-drive limit with a loaded gun in his cup holder when he crashed his black Chevy into a ditch on the side of I-96 in Fowlerville, about 65 miles outside of Detroit.
He allegedly taunted state troopers who responded to the scene on April 6, telling them he ran their budget, and was pepper sprayed and tasered twice while resisting arrest, police say.”

I am going to have to go with the troopers on this one. Good grief.
He allegedly taunted state troopers who responded to the scene on April 6, telling them he ran their budget, and was pepper sprayed and tasered twice while resisting arrest, police say.
Seems like the appropriate response.
Also, the article says he’s a Democrat, so since the Republicans control the legislature I’m thinking he was stretching the truth when he claimed to run their budget.
Cam Brady, is that you?
What the hell? When I visited Kobe (just across the bay from Osaka) my relatives forced me to go to Universal Studios park!
I don’t think I’d voluntarily want to go to that Mario Bros park either, but fuck it looks better than Universal Studios.
Oh, it only opened last March. I guess I’ll forgive my Japanese in-laws.

Compound that with the fact that the sister-in-law is Korean and you get even more direct talk.

For this reason, and the fact that Jenner would probably be better than many other options (including the incumbent), I’m hoping they win.

Reminds me of the Beers of the Third World collection.
For a certain type of Florida Man, today is Secession Day.
It all began in 1982. The US border patrol created a roadblock between the Keys and the rest of Florida. This frustrated Key West residents – upon trying to enter the rest of Florida, they were treated as though they were entering from a foreign country, having to go through the routine border patrol checks. US Border Patrol claimed that this was a preventative measure, ensuring that they would stop “illegal” immigrants from entering. Every car that was leaving The Keys was checked.
Residents of The Keys found it humorous that border patrol was checking in unlikely places, such as the glove compartments and under seats (talk about the world’s tiniest illegal immigrants). What they didn’t find very funny was that tourism had plummeted. These new road blocks were also blocking people’s desire to hop down to The Keys for the weekend.
Community leaders attempted to take legal action against the US Border Patrol, with no avail. The court ruled against The Keys. Mayor Dennis Wardlow left the courthouse that day, announcing to the press that the Florida Keys will secede from the Union the following day at noon.
What followed made history. Press & federal agents showed up the next day. According to FloridaHistory.org – “At noon on April 23, 1982, Mayor Wardlow read a Proclamation of Secession, declaring that Key West would now be a sovereign nation known as the Conch Republic.”
The locals still issue passports, and have a big party this time every year. Motto: “We seceded where others failed.”
It’s like people watched Dirty Harry and rooted for the bad guys.

I think the story about bad marriage advice should be renamed “Look at these clueless women”.
Most of the tweets are from women who claim that their husband is totes happy listening to them and doing most of the work. I’d love to have a reporter followup with their husbands and get their spin.
There is one that (paraphasing) said “In 16 years we have never had a situation where we couldn’t sit down together and come up with a decision mutually”. Yeah, I’ll put a lot of cash money on her husband having a different take.
It cracks me up how many recent divorcees are contributing to the “horrible marriage advice” thread. It’s like they are pissed that nobody gave them “how to be happy in divorce advice”.

OFFS!!!
Being racist is the new anti-racist. Like a controlled fire, let it burn through.
To be fair, anti-racist has always been a thin facade for Jim Crow style racism.
So Scott is only 1/1024th black?
So the “fact check” was that everything he said was true, but other family members that he never brought up may have been better off than his granddad? That is some hard hitting journalism.
How long before Facebook and Twitter lock that story down?
LOL. The fact check’s big revelation is that Scott’s family owned the cotton fields they worked in. Which, while an impressive feat for a black family in the Jim Crow south, in no way undermines his story.
There is one that (paraphasing) said “In 16 years we have never had a situation where we couldn’t sit down together and come up with a decision mutually”.
“Yes, Dear.”
“In reality, given that GOP supporters believe that rampaging mobs burned and looted major cities — somehow without the people actually living in those cities noticing — getting them to see facts about something as abstract as the deficit is a hopeless cause ”

Fuck you, Krugabe. Downtown Richmond still looks like Mogadishu. Businesses on Broad Street still boarded up. Public monuments unrecognizable because of graffitti, etc.
Maybe you should stop whining and build yourself an autonomous zone with a big giant fist in the middle of an intersection?
Well they didn’t burn *my* house, so I guess all is ok.
Say her name.
Hundreds of students at Ohio State University gathered on Wednesday inside the school’s Student Union, where they demanded the university sever ties with Columbus Police over Tuesday’s shooting of knife-wielding teen Ma’Khia Bryant.
“Say her name. Ma’Khia Bryant. Say her name,” the students repeated over and over again during their protest, according to a report by the Columbus Dispatch.
The protesters also demanded that the university sever its ties with the Columbus Division of Police, after ones of its officers fatally shot 16-year-old Bryant, who, at the time of the shooting, could be seen wielding a knife while lunging at another girl, according to the body cam video later released by the agency.
Say her name, say her name.
With no police around you
She is gonna knife you.
She ain’t playin’ games.
Say her name, her name.
She ain’t a nice lady.
She is fucking crazy.
Why the sudden change?
Missed one of the “says”. Dammit. Oh, well, you get the idea.
Duncan Lemp.
WHATS MY NAME!
And just like that, I’m in Charlotte!

The College of William and Mary will rename some racist buildings, etc., and contextualize the founding fathers.

continued effort to not celebrate “those who upheld the Confederacy, Jim Crow, segregation and the racist ideologies they spread.”
Democrats?
The new chancellor at W&M is from Smith College and is a dyed in the wool woke.
I expect more of this BS as time moves on. It should be interesting to see how the locals take it, as they are very Democrat but also stick in the mud traditionalists.
and contextualize the founding fathers
They were the flawed giants whose shoulders you stand upon. There, contextualized.
Even taking the simplistic view that history is a latter, and that we are more enlightened than those who came before, one must concede that the bottom rungs are more essential to the climb than the top rungs. The founding fathers struck a significant blow for the ideas of equality and anti-imperialism, so anyone who values those concepts should value those contributions, even if they don’t think much of the people who made those contributions.
Excellent summary, thank you
If you were wondering what the Racism Against Asians thing was really about…
https://www.inquirer.com/politics/nation/asian-americans-political-participation-hate-crimes-20210423.html
I didn’t read through the article, but I decided I’d CTRL-F and read the references to affirmative action, colleges and universities.
Didn’t find anything.
Trump pulled a higher percentage of the Asian vote. They’re trying to pull those voters back in with Asian candidates and the “wave of racism against Asians” (by whom is never specified of course)
And I would hypothesize that many of these asians going into Democratic Party politics were, shall we say, not *personally* impacted by racial quotas in some selective university’s science program.
OTOH, this Ramakrisnan dude got into Princeton.

Anti-Asian Hate narrative in one stat:
Change in Asian voting behavior from 2016 to 2020: +9 points Republican
Great. I can hardly wait to see Al Sharpton go broke because a bunch of Asian race hustlers outworked him and got all the govt grant and corp money.
“anti-Asian hate incidents spike”
Asserted without evidence.
“AAPI”
Because Tongans and Mongolians have so much in common.
Wait- the Indonesian navy has submarines?
HAD….submarines…had.
Truly sucks for those seamen though.
Yeah. I expected clapped out Russian hardware.
German made in 1981 refitted sometime this century in South Korea.
Yeah, I remember the Korean shipyard work, but I thought those were some new construction (might be a few others).
“I was drunk the day my ma got out of prisonnnnnn….”
Ah, the perfect Country & Western song.
About trucks and trains and momma
Or prison, or gettin’ drunk
I can only hear that in DAC’s voice.
This is what happens when you Bumblebrag.
“One week after the insurrection at the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6, Robert Chapman sent a message to a prospective love interest on the dating app Bumble to brag that he had taken part,” reported The Washington Post.
According to court documents, Chapman boasted on Bumble, saying “I did storm the capitol,” and that he “made it all the way to Statuary Hall.”
The Bumble user reportedly contacted the police, after responding “We are not a match.”
NBC New York reported yesterday that Chapman was arrested by the FBI “in connection with the events of Jan. 6 in Washington, D.C.,” and is “charged with trespassing and disorderly conduct on restricted government property.”
“restricted government property”
This is bullshit.
Well, that IRS backlog looks insurmountable. Usually I file early and everything is done within a couple weeks… Not this year. Of course, this would be the year they owe me a shit ton of money.
I can state from experience that it won’t slow down the speed with which they collect your payment in the least.
Can confirm. Money left my account right on the 15th.
They have been “working” on my amended 2019 return since August 31st, 2020. Coming up on 8 months. They insist that I owe $2k and have kept the $400 that I’m supposed to be refunded for my 2020 taxes. Every time I call it’s “we are short-handed due to the virus”.
I just got a letter from them after my latest call a few days ago. Talk about authentic frontier gibberish.
Better than a dog?
A device claimed to detect the virus that causes COVID-19 in ambient air within 2–3 min has been successfully tested at two universities in the US. It was developed by the company Smiths Detection, which says that the test has a sensitivity equivalent to PCR testing. The test is now commercially available in the US and is being prepared for a global rollout.
So- completely useless?

Well, hopefully there aren’t long term side effects or those babies are screwed.
Hey, sorry for going off topic, but I really wanted to let people here know about this. I’m probably the only person here who collects figures, but this group is doing a Kickstarter to make retro figures based off of The Prisoner. I thought I might not be the only one here interested. If the reach $80,000, you can get an inflatable Rover!
https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/wanderingplanettoys/the-prisoner-retro-style-action-figures
The sixth person to kick in should get something special.
I’m in.
Laura Lechuga of the Catalan Institute of Nanoscience and Nanotechnology, whose group has developed a spectroscopic liquid biosensor for SARS-Cov-2, is cautiously impressed: “As far as I know, there is no solution for on-site detection of SARS-CoV-2 in air (or aerosols) commercially available. There are many developments on-going at academic research and industrial level, but no one is close to commercialization. So, this Smiths device could become the first detector and could be [in massive demand],” she says. She cautions, however, that “the detection of any pathogen in air is really complex, due to the influence of the way the air sampling is performed, the specificity (to avoid cross-reactivity with other biomolecules and chemical molecules in the air) and, more importantly, the sensitivity level, as normally pathogens are present in the aerosols at a very low level”.
No kidding. And the very last thing we want to do is provide evidence which might reduce people’s fear that this is an incredibly pervasive and lethal pathogen. It’s everywhere!
Lechuga is Spanish for lettuce
*my brain is filled with useless trivia*
sorry for going off topic
You must not be from around here.
No link, because the news website was a massive shitshow, but getting flyswattered by a crane as you’re driving down the freeway seems like as good of a way to go as anything.
Houston, I think.
Chicken drumsticks on the traeger.
Salad.
Two hearted ale.
How do you like the traeger?
I love it. I got it as an early Fathers Day gift at beginning of pandemic.
After 13 months, this was my first time doing drumsticks. Spectacular. I not doing them any other way ever.
I have only had one thing that the traeger doesnt work for so far, and cant remember what that was.
Steaks. Pork chops. Ribs. Pork butt. Chicken. All worked great.
I did something that I thought was too dry, prefer the oven, but dont remember what.
Traeger, if you can afford one, is great for those that want to BBQ in a set and forget setting. I won’t knock it, but man can I not afford that. Instead I am out in the fire slaving away on my offset.
It allows you to smoke and grill in one unit. Isnt necessarily the best at either, but doesnt require two units.
My wife thinks it was pork loin. Probably, although I dont even remember doing one on the traeger.
SCIENCE!
The risk of being exposed to Covid-19 indoors is as great at 60 feet as it is at 6 feet — even when wearing a mask, according to a new study by Massachusetts Institute of Technology researchers who challenge social distancing guidelines adopted across the world.
MIT professors Martin Z. Bazant, who teaches chemical engineering and applied mathematics, and John W.M. Bush, who teaches applied mathematics, developed a method of calculating exposure risk to Covid-19 in an indoor setting that factors in a variety of issues that could affect transmission, including the amount of time spent inside, air filtration and circulation, immunization, variant strains, mask use, and even respiratory activity such as breathing, eating, speaking or singing.
Bazant and Bush question long-held Covid-19 guidelines from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the World Health Organization in a peer-reviewed study published earlier this week in Proceedings of the National Academy of Science of the United States of America.
“We argue there really isn’t much of a benefit to the 6-foot rule, especially when people are wearing masks,” Bazant said in an interview. “It really has no physical basis because the air a person is breathing while wearing a mask tends to rise and comes down elsewhere in the room so you’re more exposed to the average background than you are to a person at a distance.”
The important variable the CDC and the WHO have overlooked is the amount of time spent indoors, Bazant said. The longer someone is inside with an infected person, the greater the chance of transmission, he said.
GARBAGE IN, GARBAGE OUT.
It’s garbage, all the way down.
That aligns with the one thing that was done well…canceling large scale indoor events.
I think the 60 ft thing is BS, but super spreaders occured at events where people were in close proximity inside for long times.
Good to hear! I’ve heard a ton of hype, but it’s hard to tell if it actually lives up to the hype.
Dafuq? This belonged on your traeger comment.
Not so fun now is it!
“What our analysis continues to show is that many spaces that have been shut down in fact don’t need to be. Often times the space is large enough, the ventilation is good enough, the amount of time people spend together is such that those spaces can be safely operated even at full capacity and the scientific support for reduced capacity in those spaces is really not very good,” Bazant said. “I think if you run the numbers, even right now for many types of spaces you’d find that there is not a need for occupancy restrictions.”
Six-feet social distancing rules that inadvertently result in closed businesses and schools are “just not reasonable,” according to Bazant.
“Inadvertently”
Stop it, you’re killing me.
Bazant also said that a big question that is coming will be when masks can be removed, and that the study’s guidelines can help quantify the risks involved. He also noted that measuring carbon dioxide in a room can also help quantify how much infected air is present and hence risk of transmission.
“We need scientific information conveyed to the public in a way that is not just fearmongering but is actually based in analysis,” Bazant said. After three rounds of heavy peer review, he said it’s the most review he’s ever been through, and that now that it’s published he hopes it will influence policy.
Good luck with that.
We need scientific information conveyed to the public in a way that is not just fearmongering but is actually based in analysis… now that it’s published he hopes it will influence policy.
Yeah, okay.
$1.7 billion for ‘17 unrequested F-35 Joint Strike Fighter (JSF) aircraft,’ a type of plane which the report warns “has been plagued with cost overruns, delays, and poor performance.”
A billion here, a billion there, and pretty soon you’re spending real money!
They are just changing the date on those articles for that airframe.
Harris’ NH visit
Kamala Harris completed her first New Hampshire trip as vice president Friday, listening to the virtues of the Biden administration’s America Jobs Plan, especially in how it could extend broadband to rural communities and provide workforce training pathways to good-paying jobs.
A visit to Plymouth showed off the work of the New Hampshire Electric Cooperative to bring high-speed internet service to homeowners in small towns like Lempster in western Sullivan County and Colebrook near the Canadian border.
She later toured a training center of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers, Local 490, the union decades ago that produced the first woman to become a licensed electrician in the state’s history.
Harris noted only 6% of workers in the building trades were women and Biden’s infrastructure spending plan was dedicated to increasing the female ranks for these good-wage, good-benefit jobs along with more minority workers.
Maybe women don’t want to be electricians? Why do we need to meet these quotas? Fuck am I getting old.
Still waiting to here why the lack of men in primary education and nursing isn’t a problem that needs national attention.
Or executive assistants. Or in HR. Or in biology. Or dental hygienists. Or hairdressers.
Tried in Sweden to do some kind of quotas. Numbers actually went down. Jordan Peterson mentioned it.
Two dozen fully vaccinated NH residents get Covid
Two dozen of the almost 340,000 New Hampshire residents who have been fully vaccinated against COVID-19 have become infected and two have died, state officials said Thursday.
The 24 total so-called “breakthrough” infections amount to one for every 14,165 people who have been fully vaccinated — less than 1/100th of 1%.
Both deaths were residents in long-term care settings.
Ongoing national research suggests those who have contracted COVID-19 after getting fully vaccinated were older, according to Dr. Beth Daly, director of the state’s Bureau of Infectious Disease Control.
No vaccine is 100% effective.
Oops
Peterborough’s $8 million Main Street bridge reconstruction project is going to be delayed after a drilling rig tipped over Thursday morning, and ended up in the Contoocook River.
“Fortunately no one was injured,” said Nicole MacStay, Peterborough’s town administrator.
Police say the accident happened around 10 a.m. while the rig operator was working on the Route 202 retaining wall portion of the project. The road stayed closed for a few hours as the rig was moved enough to allow for cars to pass.
NH State Rep and a three year old picture
A fitness instructor, who now happens to be a 100% NHHRA rated Republican New Hampshire state rep, had someone call the statehouse to complain? Not about a vote but over a three-year-old photo she shared on Facebook.
No, it’s not the featured image above and we don’t know who complained, but their intentions seem clear.
Yesterday, someone called the State House and complained that I, as a State Representative posted an inappropriate selfie and that the picture should be taken down, and if it’s not taken down, they will cause problems by posting it on other media.
Rep. Tina Harley shared the memory from a time when she was a Zumba Instructor three years ago. A selfie of her looking fit in a dress she said was given to her by a friend, shared on her personal Facebook page.
OFFS, one moron makes a call and from this we can ascertain what Democrats want and would happen in some other position switched hypothetical. This is exhibit one in why I can’t take “right wing media” seriously. Yes the “left wing media” needs to be called out for their bullshit but this aint it.
I see nothing in the article tying the moron with Democrats. The only mention of Democrats I see is blasting them for not supporting the state rep, which I think should surprise no one.
The author is right about not being intimidated by cancel culture.
Let’s get the caller selfie. She’s a buffarillo, isn’t she?

Well, I splurged and bought the sword.
Will it keeeeeel?
Theoretically, of course.
(Also, pics?)
Will it keeeeeel?
The blacksmith says: For what it is worth, I personally would entrust my Life to this specific sword if I had to go into actual mortal combat….
When I get it, I’ll photograph it.
If you were to buy a stolen sword, would it still be called “fencing?”
My favorite euphemism to date.
