Chapter 4 of The Slight Edge is entitled “You Have to Start with a Penny?” Earlier in the book, Olson tells the story of a wealthy man with two sons. He offers both $1,000,000 in thirty days or one penny on the first day which will double each of the next thirty days. Long story short, the son who chose the penny was ten times richer than his brother a month later.
Olson’s point here is you must start. You can’t start with nothing. You have to start with something. It can be very little but there must be something. Wishing isn’t action. If you are just starting to exercise then an ambling, untimed one mile walk is something. So is a gentle 15-minute walk on a treadmill. You get the idea. Something, anything more than nothing, is a start.
The thrust of the book to this point has been the compound effect of consistent action toward your goal. In this chapter, Olson rachets down the effect to prove his point. He asks the reader to assume consistent action won’t get you a compound effect. There is no investment that will reliably double your money every day. There is no exercise program that makes you twice as fit each time you do it. Instead, assume you improve three tenths of one percent (0.003) each time you do something (e.g., read ten pages of a book, exercise, take control of your finances). Your daily results will be imperceptible. In a year, you will have doubled your fitness, knowledge, finances, etc. That point hit me between the eyes.
In that vein, this was my second full week back at the gym post-mask mandate. Shedding those things has enormously improved my life. Though it was a bit difficult, I got in all my workouts and all my conditioning. I was a bit sore from last week and acutely aware of the gains I’ve lost. Still, I just got in and got it done. It felt great. Whatever the physical effects, my headspace is much better for going.
****************************************************************
This week is when we announce the results of our fitness goals for the last 12 weeks. I’ll start, I gained two pounds. Ugh. I have had some personal stuff going on in addition to the coronavirus nonsense that put me in a mental spin. The good news is during these twelve weeks I saw the weight going up, took control of it, and got it going back down. It’s not a victory but it’s also not the loss this first appears to be. I hope you had a better 12 weeks.
The coronavirus edition is over but I’m still going to share some local news because it’s good. The Los Angeles courts announced a full reopen starting Monday. If Newsom, Garcetti, and every other government monster can’t keep the LA courthouse shuttered then the jig is up. Kiss my ass delta variant!
I already told you I love Glenn Loury. Here is his interview with James Lindsay about whom I have mixed feelings.
Weekly cuteness has nothing to do with a Chinese wet market.
You know what, I heard about Vince Neil’s first post-pandemic show so here is one for Mojeaux.
“ Something, anything more than nothing, is a start.”
This is so true. Develop the habit of exercise. You don’t have to run a half-marathon on day three. But you do have to get off the sofa and take that walk on day one. And day two. And day three. And day four, take a rest you deserve it. Back at it on day five…
?
I am a 20-25 minute work out guy. Any longer and it’s an obstacle to consistency.
This week is when we announce the results of our fitness goals for the last 12 weeks.
Over the past 5-6 weeks, I’ve been consistently biking 16-20 miles every day (indoor stationary bike). I weighed myself last Saturday for the first time in months and was dismayed to see I was the heaviest I’ve ever been. I can’t imagine what that was before I started biking. I’ve modified my diet further to about 1200 calories/day by cutting out breakfast and lunch, increased biking to ~20 miles/day (did 24 today) and have dropped 10 lbs over the past week.
I have another 25lbs to go. Once there, I figure I can restructure my diet again to just maintain rather than lose weight. I’ll also cut biking to 16 miles/day and use the other time to get back into lifting weights.
Goggins would be proud.
“He loves them so much ❤️”
The anthropomorphism is a bit much but he is a cute little thing. Kind of like an armadillo minus the leprosy.
No weight goal for me, yet. That will come, as 1) I didn’t know about this. 2) weight, as I am sure you will agree, is only secondary. Primary, for me at least, is exercising and getting into a routine for that. And this is something new to me, as I was always that guy is was in generally good shape. But, middle age and life take their tolls. Indeed, my wife is going through a bit of a crisis over this, as she broke her back in her twenties, stayed active(ish) by walking and gardening, and generally ate very well. But, she is not an exerciser by nature and loves food. And now she finds herself larger than she wants to be, but she tore her meniscus and is in a lot of pain when that is used.
So, it’s now a trip to the doctor now and probably physical therapy. Sucks to get old.
But, as I was saying, I am not too worried about weight, as that is secondary to exercising right and in a way that is positive for me. So, doubling my bike rides and pushing for more distance, while going from two exercise sessions to three per week, and tracking how that is progressing. Once I feel comfortable with all of this, then I will start putting my weight into the equation.
Hi Big Chafed, Thanks for new edition and greetings from NOCal.
G-fit update: Sleep was very good. Food was very protein with a bunch of fruit. Hike mileage was down to 42 miles this week. Wim Hoff/meditative “ancient man” techniques; Did a couple times. Weight down 2# at 173. Fasted 48 hrs from Sun to Tues. Lost 4# from start to finish.
Goals: Meeting goal weight range max (175-170). Still not dead from Covid…
Sort of Fasting news: A study was done on modulating calorie intake from 175% to 25% of typical calories. From the study it appeared than changing/varying calorie intake resulted in better weight loss than a consistent restrictive diet of 75% of typical calorie intake. I don’t count calories but fasting really reduces the calories..to nothing
Weird workouts: I came upon a YT video about a 5 minute workout. It is basically doing bear crawls and crab crawls for 5 minutes. I tried it..I’ll try anything..how hard can it be to do bear crawls for 5 minutes. I got to say it was an ass kicker and pretty tough. In the coming days, I was sore in joints, I didn’t know I had. My elbows and wrists are still sore 5 days later. Might be too old to do this regularly or ever again…
De todos modos, ¡tenga una gran semana y sáltese una comida o tres!
I only did one day of intermittent fasting last week. It was a crazy week and I stress eat when over busy.
Stress eating…I see that written a lot. I can see stress drinking but I can’t see eating because of stress as being a thing..but I am weird. Case in point: While fasting this past week, I stumbled upon a competitive eaters YT channel (Randy Santel). It was weirdly satisfying to watch him eat a 7# wagon wheel of pizza in 30 minutes. I felt full just watching him eat even though I hadn’t eaten anything for 48 hours.
My stress eating is probably due to my stress drinking. I am one of those people who when slightly hungover can eat constantly and not be satisfied. When available, a greasy cheeseburger does the trick but that is not always available.
The bear crawls and crab crawls sound like a specific HIIT workout. Do whatever works for you.
just got back from a holiday where I averaged 6 beers a day (and a couple of fried squid) so not even thinking of fitness.
never go to Skroponeria glibbies.
Also SWEET SWEET AC
That seems less of a euphemism and more of a nickname.
I did do a stupid fitness thing someone in the group was doing and had a w
goddamnit
a week worth of really bad DOMS to show for it due to the unfamiliar stimulus.
I also did 6 pullups and 45 pushups on the beach
I took up Ozzy’s challenge of 1 push up, 1 squat, and one sit up, (although I substituted an ab roller for the sit up) and kept it up for five days. Yesterday I slept in but had to work so I didn’t get it in. Today was lazy day and I had Modelo and bacon for breakfast after way too much imbibing during the glib happy hour last night and nothing is getting done after that breakfast. Tomorrow I will get back at it since I think I have established a routine. I need to get back on the rowing machine as well since that slacked off. It is way easier to quit something than to start something.
(+ adding one a day)
Keep at it, ‘sloper!
I’m on Day 21 today, but the last two days I’ve added in some weighted vest walks.
3.0 mi/25 lb vest in 54:20, I believe (yesterday – at high noon in Goodyear, AZ. God, it was stupid hot.)
3.5 mi/25 lb vest in 58:35 (today) – the last 1.5 mi in 24:06.
Fantastic for my mental health. Shins and legs feeling it, but not injured. Just sore.
I was gonna go skate the full pipe today, but it’s about 95 degrees out there and the “softer” way to get there entails walking almost a mile each way. The last time it was half that, but about an eighth mile of it was a 60 degree incline with loose gravel. Wife’s worried about the kid doing all that walking and skating in roasting weather. So we’re going to the local skate park instead. No major walk and the a/c is right in the car on the way out. Still gonna be skating in the heat, but we can stop whenever we want and not have to hike forever. It’s kind of a relief, because I worry about getting crunched at the pipe and not having anyone but my 8 year old to help.
Btw, I need to put on about 8-10 lbs. Might try some gainer shakes. They never worked for me before, but maybe now that I’m older, they will.
95 does not sound so bad. I had 102 with humidity in the 20% region
20% humidity, wow that would be nice!! It was great a couple weekends ago when it dropped to 50%
Well, life got in the way and I haven’t been to the gym since I posted my goals. I work four days a week, (I always thought I would like a four day work week, and I was correct. Would be better it the off day was Mon or Fri, but Tuesdays will do) and get about 15,000 steps per day. I also officiate sports and baseball/softball season has seen me doing 4 – 5 days a week, with 4 – 5 games on Saturday/Sunday.
Still interment fasting on Mon/Thu/Fri, have a shake for breakfast and nothing until I’m off work; Doing a 22 – 24 hour fast from Tuesday evening until Wednesday after work. I really think this is good for health reasons as others on here have posted as well.
Weight dropped to below 200, if I had time to go to gym and lift I think my ideal weight would be 210 with more muscle mass
Obviously haven’t been posting or reading much. Did make time to read Almakee county and Ozy’s China post (boy that brought out some comments)
Softball tournament actually got rained out this weekend so I started building a chicken coop (raining now about over so I can get back to it) I was just going for utility, going to build it on an old trailer frame, wife say’s lets make it look like a camper trailer, so you know what plan is in action. LOL
Tundra, thanks for the podcast suggestions (AOM & Survival) Jack has really inspired me and now my dream/wish (a dream without a plan is just a wish) is turning into a plan. I plan on being able to buy land and “homestead” in two years. (And to the point of this article, my starting point is the chicken coop mention above.) Just gotta keep the nose to the grindstone, so not as much time here, but will always drop in now and then, but have to spend more time researching how to raise livestock, garden, and am really looking to do some aqua-farming.
Peace out
Glad they helped, Lazer!
Looking forward to reading about your new life!
Mission update: Having returned home, I have successfully met with CodeNames: GT, Tom T, and UCS at their top-secret Tranquility Base & Bunker in the Dayton area.
Due to my work schedule I didnt stay as long as I would have liked, but it was a splendid time.
Of special note- UCS was not wearing “socializing gloves”.
I’m off to bed.
Of special note- UCS was not wearing “socializing gloves”.
Now that I think about it, he wasn’t wearing them when I met him either.
No glove, no love.
I gotta get my mind right. Really fallen off the “good habits” wagon.
I will take a small step of some kind today; maybe work on organizing some junk for a garage sale. It’s too big a job to contemplate all at once, but incrementally should be fine.
And I’ll make a healthy dinner. Ate out twice this weekend, both too much and too many carbs.
Zechariah 4:10 “Do not despise these small beginnings, for the LORD rejoices to see the work begin, to see the plumb line in Zerubbabel’s hand.”
Perfect.
Have a great week!
Excellent. Hopefully there aren’t too many folks still wearing face diapers.
I just got back from my gym, and there was one person wearing a face diaper. Blech.
My goal for June 27th was to be below 260 lbs. I am at 262 lbs @ 26.1% bodyfat. 2.1 pounds off. I found the post where we committed to goals to see how much I had lost over the last several weeks. I was 270.3 lbs at 27.1% bodyfat. So, 8.3 pounds plus some bodyfat loss.
I’ve talked with my trainer about a return to conventional deadlifts and squatting with a bar on my back. We have a plan. I will perform rack pulls with a slowly increasing range of motion until I return to a full range of motion conventional deadlift. I will continue using the belt squat machine, substituting with goblet squats if the machine is in use, until after I return to full range of motion conventional deadlifts.
I am back to bench pressing with a bar and full range of motion already. My trainer was a little concerned about putting pressure on my back with a proper set-up. Several months ago, it did, but it no longer bothers my back. Last Friday I worked with him on bench pressing. My last set was supposed to be three repetitions with 185 lbs. It turned into six repetitions at 185 lbs. I think this was the first time I was bench pressing with a full range of motion since before the Lil Rona insanity started.
Today was rack pull day. I used two 45 lb bumper plates on each side on the floor since the lowest pin setting on the power cage is higher than I want to start. I started with 10 lb bumper plates on the bar. No problems starting at 65 lbs total. I worked up to 95 lbs total with no problems. Next time I will use a 45 and a 25 lb bumper plate on each side to lower the bar and get closer to a full range of motion deadlift.
There were a few annoyances at the gym today. Some folks left weights all over the place by the power cage where I was working. I cleaned up the area a bit in between sets. I watched some guy use the seated calf raise machine to perform Nordic hamstring curls even though the calf raise machine is right next to the not-being-used glute-ham machine which is intended for that exercise (as well as others). On the other hand, there were some lovely thick fit women to look at.
After the gym, I decided to see how the Mustang’s AC keeps up with 90+ degree days compared to the Genesis. Even when the Genesis was new, its AC struggled with 90+ degree days. I’m happy to say the Mustang’s AC did a better job than the Genesis’ AC ever did.
“Thunder Underground” is an excellent choice.
I hope that the newly found mask free living doesn’t make people lose their zeal for pursuing legal challenges to the lockdowns and illegal XOs.
You know there’s going to be a new SARS or West Nile or something again. We need to be ready to slap it down.
Yep. Assholes never sleep.
In NH, Reopen NH is planning for the next legislative session and the 2022 elections. YAL and the NHLA aren’t going away.
Reopen PA is spinning down since the constitutional amendments passed; however, there are what amounts to spin-off groups continuing the fight.
This fall, new variant, be there or be square…this thing mutates fast enough to be a bottomless well of excuses for those authoritarian twats.
I’m sure Justice Penaltax will invoke the doctrine of mootness.
I found the post where we committed to goals ……..
Damn you! I prefer to stay ignorant to the dumb shit I say here usually due to poor memory and or being half in the bag while commenting and now I had to look at my goals.
I am still at the same weight. (188’ish) The drift boat is out of the shop and sitting on my flatbed trailer so I could fix my pos car so no progress made there but the table saw is all but set up again so I am closer to actually working on the boat than then. I am, however, in far less pain thanks to PT and semi regular stretching. I canceled my appt for a disc injection because I am have two differing opinions from two different doctors. I have yet to go fishing this summer. I suck!
I am, however, in far less pain thanks to PT and semi regular stretching.
This is good.
It has been life changing with just about 50% drop in the pain scale. Your PT must have gotten you similar results since you are back in the gym.
Did you go to Porcfest? I see it is all over the liberty twitterverse.
I went through two rounds of PT and a round of cortisone shots. Both PTs helped, but the second one was better. The cortisone shots were a huge help, greatly killing the pain.
I did not go to PorcFest this year. I made no plans for it because of my FreedomFest Road Trip which starts in early July. I didn’t want to commit to anything big like PorcFest in late June so that I would have time to get stuff done before leaving for the road trip. Porc Fest sold out this year. I’ve been hearing some good things about it.
I might go next year.
I went for a day last year when Reopen NH worked with the PorcFest folks to have an afternoon/day with Reopen NH at PorcFest. It was a good day.
Where did you get the shots? Shoulder issues you where having? Sorry I don’t remember. I have a couple herniated discs that MRI showed was doing some nerve pinching but all my pain is associated with one of my calf muscles aching as if it is the one part of my body that has ran a 100 mile race after me walking between 50-100 yards. They wanted to inject in L4. One doctor said sciatic nerve pinching will not make my calf seize up and cramp like it does, and one said that is exactly what sciatic nerve pinching does. Fuck if I know.
I got the shots (three of them in that round spread over two months) in my lower back. I have a herniated disc between L5 and S1.
I had some calf pain when the herniation really acted up, but mine affects the next nerve down from yours.
Aaaah, that is good to know. I have L4 and S1 herniations. I am pleased to know someone I trust who had good luck with them because I was/am a bit scared of that procedure and have heard mixed results. I think I have gotten all I can out of PT. While it has helped immensely, I am not sure there is room to gain anything more there. I just want to walk with no pain all the time not just some of the time.
Not everyone I know has had good luck with those shots.
A former boss of mine found they helped, but she had to keep going back until the discs calcified.
Someone I know from Swing Dancing found the shots did not work for him, and he went for surgery to be rid of the pain. The surgery worked.
When my doc saw the MRI results showing the herniation impinging on my nerve, the doc sent me to a back surgeon. The guy wanted to operate. I wanted to try something less invasive first because you can’t unring the bell of surgery. He had no problem with that, and set me up with a doctor who performed the shots.
Now, every now and then if I do something stupid I’ll trigger pain. The disc is still herniated and material can be pushed out into the nerve if I’m stupid. The shot just brings the inflammation and pain down so that you can do more, and the body can better reabsorb the material into the disc.
If you want to know more, ping me on the forums or have SP send you my e-mail.
?
I have had both injections and surgery. The injections didn’t really do anything for me but as DEG says, they work well for many people. It turns out the surgery, while not perfect, was very helpful in that during it they found a shit-ton of bone shards in my spinal cord and spent around four hours pulling them out while they were in there. No injection can take care of that.
I am on round two of this now, and will probably need another round of surgery. But that is how it goes sometimes.
I was scheduled to have the series of three.
I got the first one and it was like magic. I felt much better. I was totally lloking forward to the second one.
The second time, they seemed to give me a bunch more local anesthetic. They seemed to just keep shooting me up with it. After around 8-9 shots, I got a whirly dizzy feeling. I told them that. They gave me yet another shot and as the needle was coming out, I blacked out. I came to across the room on a gurney with a bunch of people looking very surprised and relieved. I gathered my self up and got the fuck out of there quick.
Later, I was telling the story to one of my customers, who was a prosecutor specializing in medical cases. He told me that they either just plain gave me way too much or accidentally got some in a vein. He said he’s prosecuted cases for just that and the patient always died. He said don’t ever go back to that doctor and eventually, he thought he’d be prosecuting that doctor eventually.
I never went back for the third.
It sounds like you are making great progress DEG.
Thanks!
FWIW, I reviewed my goal and believe I more or less made it. I was going to join the Zoom yesterday after my race, but I couldn’t find a link that worked. To be fair, I was a bit tired, caffeinated and alcoholed.
The true test will come in just less than three weeks. I’ll be happy to provide more info on Zooms between now and then.
BTW, the event I finished yesterday was a bugger. I learned a lot about water crossings.
I felt the same way last night, but it was after a daytime outdoor Phil Lesh concert. Thought you might appreciate that.
You’re killing it, DEG!
Have you considered box squats for your rehab?
Thanks!
I was using box squats for a while. At the time, I was having a little mobility problem preventing good form so we dropped it. Now that my gym has a belt squat machine, the trainer thinks that might work better for me. I have to admit, I like the belt squat. Except for one day where I felt multiple odd, painless pops in my hamstring, I have had no trouble with it.
Timeloose at the gym this week.

That is awesome.

I think #2 is photoshopped. Note the sparkly stuff around her lower legs.
Otherwise, a pretty good gallery overall.
Speaking of getting things done:
I posted a couple of crAIGSLIST ADS A LITTL WHILE AGO, tHINGS i’D RATHER SELL THAN MOVE.
wITHIN MINUTES i GOT TWO REPLIES TO
craigslist ads a little while ago, for things I’d rather sell than move.
Within minutes I got two nearly identical replies to one of the ads:
“Still (posted five minutes ago) available?”
“Yes”
“For my safety, I want to text you a six digit number. You text it back, so I’ll know you’re legit.”
WTF? “No.”
That screams “scam”, even if I can’t readily figure it out.
Did I lose out on selling that set of wheels? I doubt it.
Same. The first few messages are always bullshit.
You’re not selling the 914?!?
Any response other than “Great! I’d like to come by and look at them today. Is 3:00 pm ok for you?” Is a scam. You didn’t miss out on a sale.
https://donotpay.com/learn/craigslist-text-spam/
They’re using a third party verification with your number to “prove” your number is theirs.
Fucking caps lock. Why do they even put the goddam thing on the keyboard?
To see if you’re legit?
🙂
To see if you’re legit?
FAIL
*Me, not you, by the way.
Chafed!
That’s good stuff – I need to get going on that book.
I actually lifted three times this week! This moving shit is ridiculous. I’ve got my eye on a promising gym in the new place, though.
I’m maintaining my weight and building strength/muscle, but I’m unhappy with the thiccness through the middle. I’m gonna mess around with my diet for the next few weeks and see what happens.
Any of y’all old fucks mess with TRT?
Have a great week Glibfitters!
Re TRT: You should do it..you know you want to. Go ahead. There is nothing to be scared of…Joe Rogan has been doing it for 12 years; he’s pretty normal. He has the testosterones of a 27 year old.
I read that a number of foods negatively effect T levels, especially nuts–does that make sense. 2 nuts that improve T levels are brazil and macadamia. Those nuts are expensive..like ribeye steak expensive, which is also great for T.
I know very little about TRT. Are there any studies on long term efficacy and/or side effects?
I haven’t read up on any studies. I do know that hormones are potent molecules and there is always the potential for harm.
I was just busting on Tundra a little.
Lol.
Rip had a guy on a while back that pretty much sold me. The fact that the Medical Industrial Complex hates it suggests that it is something I should do immediately.
Im 46 and i take Test. I used to get it from the doctor but found a guy that i can get it from on the black market. Been taking it for about 2 years, and get my blood checked every few months to make sure its not throwing other things off. I feel like i get good results in the gym and its definitely good for the sex life if youre someone like me who has been married for almost 20 years.
I would really like to try HGH also but it doesnt quite fit into my budget right now.
The coronavirus edition is over ……………..
Thanks for the weekly posts Chafed, (and all those who submit regularly) you did a great job. Keep them coming.
Thanks WS.
Maybe that 6 digit number business is some sort of opt-in code to be put on a spam list you can never get off of.
Who knows?
Don’t take the bait.
You’re not selling the 914?!?
Good gravy, no. I’m going to move to a place on a paved road, so I can drive it regular like. I have driven it a few times, lately- just to town and back.
Triumph is on the market as of yesterday. Moving to a smaller place with a smaller garage, so I need to pass it to the next awesome person!
Prolly clean up, selling it now. All used cars, especially anything old, are selling for way too much. I keep looking for something to play with, but it’s all more than I want to pay.
Wait. Where are you moving?
Colorado!
Nice. Good luck with the move.
Thanks! Had a solid weekend of progress.
As you know, this is a pain in the ass!
Bring a Trailer listing?
Not yet. Assessing interest locally. Cheap car, too.
Chafed, my 12 weeks went similar to yours: weight up, but I got back on plan a little over a week ago and feel good that I’m heading in a good direction. Much hope for the next 12 weeks.
?
Don’t take the bait.
No way. I assume those “Is it still for sale” replies are a way to capture live telephone numbers.
This one was new, and the easy obvious tipoff was the identical messages from two separate non local numbers.
So, is it still for sale?
Daily Goals
1 gal of water consumption per day
1 hour of active healthy activity per day
0 gluten and 0 processed sugar for 5 days per week
Didn’t do too horribly on the daily goals. Water consumption isn’t perfect every day, but it has become a habit to guzzle water while at work. The hour of activity has come and gone over the weeks. I’m up to about 4 days per week. The 0 gluten and 0 processed sugar has been mostly adhered to, but I’d like to tighten it up more. Too sloppy over the past 6 weeks.
Targets
Weigh 260 lbs (from 292)
Run a 5k in sub 30 minutes (currently on the couch)
Disc golf drive average to greater than 300 feet (currently around 200 feet)
Weightlifting goals TBD (starting from basically nothing)
Lol to all of this. Much of the momentum from being on leave died while on leave for various mental/interpersonal reasons. I need to clean that shit up before expecting any long term results. I’m in more of a holding pattern than anything else right now. Weight is even. Running? HA! Didn’t get out there even once. Disc? I am averaging 275 feet, but don’t get to practice or play nearly as much as I want. 300 was achievable if mental/interpersonal stuff didn’t get in the way. Weightlifting? Didn’t even start.
The fact is that I have shit to sort out at home before I can expect improved physical health. The physical health stuff will fall in place once the other stuff gets resolved.
Good luck and hang in there Trashy.
Thanks, Gustave!
Very helpful. They tried one of the other ones on me, but I never click links on my phone.
So, is it still for sale?
Everything is for sale. Bring cash.
Bring condoms.
“The coronavirus edition is over…”
Dont bet on it. Like everything they do they will milk it for all it is worth and then some.
Any of y’all old fucks mess with TRT?
I have been taking DHEA for a few years, I think it might be helping to fend off decrepitude.
Having sex with 25 year-olds will have the same impact.
Huh, new developments in the Assange case:
https://www.zerohedge.com/political/us-case-against-assange-struck-major-blow-key-witness-admits-he-lied
Probably not enough to get the poor bastard left alone but a positive development nonetheless.
Wait…are you saying a case made by the US govt looks hinkey and politically contrived? That’s not possible.
Remember when everyone liked a good underdog story? “Nobody roots for Goliath” and all that.
The “workin’ man” against the Big Corporations, and the honest private against the Military Industrial Complex, students against the University administration.
Somehow all that was forgotten when the Dems/commies got the levers of power.
Now it’s our noble government, the Citadel of democracy, the institutions of “SCIENCE!” that are the heroes, while the few or even the lone voices are the bad guys.
The kulaks and wreckers, if you will.
Much of the left, there are still a few principled ones, opposed institutional power until they got institutional power. It was a means to an end for most of them and that’s it.
I would guess that the percentage of people that are rebellious, curious, cynical not looking for someone to worship and not looking for handouts is in the single digits.
Later that month a DDoS attack was performed against the websites of several [Icelandic] government institutions.
That deed was done under the watchful eyes of the FBI who must have authorized the attack or even initiated it, as Sabu was at that point their man. What followed was an episode where it seems obvious that Icelandic authorities were fooled into cooperation under false pretenses
That seems about right for the FBI.
Only ran twice this week. Between work, laziness, and some warmer weather in Seattle, I just didn’t get out there. Diet was okay. Fairly protein heavy. Of course the cheeseburgers and fries got their hooks into me.
Don’t foresee running at all this week as it’s hot as fuck in the PNW right now. However, I’ve booked a nice suite in a nice hotel, with nice views of Puget Sound in Everett through Wednesday. 68° in the AC. Cable TV. Plenty of Jim Beam and Perrier. I don’t care if tomorrow is 106°, it’s 68° in here.
You’re so damn optimistic. How do you do it?
Hey guys, great news!
This gal is currently single, and she seems real nice.
I hope he doesn’t have a pet bunny.
Nice flame job
Little touch up for ya.
It’ll buff out.
Thanks for all the past discussions about fasting. It’s been really informative, as well as challenging.
Well, it’s not a lot to digest…
Boooo.
Good grief. Every time I turn on the news I regret it.
A 6 trillion dollar spending bill? Why not 600 trillion? If you are going to destroy the currency why fuck around?
Democratic Party, the party of election fraud, exploding debt, illegal immigration, skyrocketing crime, shameless lies, trampling of inalienable rights….
Republican Party, the party of uselessness. They have the spine of an octopus. “When we get the house, senate and Whitehouse the first thing we will do is repeal Obamacare!”
Uh huh.
I have been saying for decades that our corrupt, incompetent ruling class needs to go. Trump gave me a glimmer of hope, but alas, it was not to be.
We got three full years of hope, and one year of covid.
Everything else moving forward is gonna be shit. Buckle up.
Republican Party, the party of uselessness. They have the spine of an octopus.
I used to think that. Now I’m in the camp of the eGOP being controlled opposition. It’s not that they’re being cowards or spineless… they’re doing their job very well in pushing the Cathedral’s agenda while paying lip service against it.
Well if they provided legitimate opposition they’d lose access to the slutty interns and COKTALE PARTEEZ.
I’m reading that as coke and tail parties and it’s probably just as accurate.
That is probably more accurate.

https://www.thegatewaypundit.com/2021/06/gunman-fully-automatic-rifle-opens-fire-chicago-traffic-broad-daylight-video/
Yes, seemingly full auto with video.
We need common sense machine-gun control.
If only it were extremely difficult and expensive to legitimately purchase a machine gun…
All I have is this lousy F-15.
As long as your F15 doesn’t have a bayonet lug, a pistol grip, or detachable magazine, it’s not a problem.
I blame Indiana. Also, how bad a shot is the guy with the machine gun? No one was hit.
It’s way harder to hit people with full auto fire. And way more expensive.
Hickok45 did a video on that topic last week. Not particularly more difficult to hit a reasonable sized target at reasonable ranges unless you don’t know how to shoot.
Every time I fire, I have to re-aim after each round. Otherwise, I’ll be shooting at the sky.
So he must have been a cop.
Otters are adorable.
https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=ASLgtV8YQkA
Yep, but they are like raccoons. Very smart, very curious and destructive. You think you want one for a pet until you have one for a pet. Raccoons are worse as they have opposable thumbs and can pick locks.
In contrast to raccoons, otters are also stone cold assassins.
No doubt. I don’t even want a cat here.
Has anyone looked at the temp forecast for Richland, WA on Tuesday? Breathtaking Kuwait-like temperatures. It’s 106 outside right now and the swamp cooler is keeping the house at a barely tolerable 75. Drink water.
Drink gin & tonic, with an ice cube.
Oh good, it looks like I’m 2 steps ahead already today
I was in Richland two weeks ago. It was 82°. Thank god I’m not going there this week. Stay hydrated.
It’s a 110* down here south of Salem. It should cool off to 99* by tomorrow, but Portland is going to stay that hot for a couple days.
I was in McMinnville two weeks ago, too. Mid-70’s with a nice breeze. Thank god I’m not going there this week.
Needs to be about 10-15 degrees hotter for Kuwait.
If only it were extremely difficult and expensive to legitimately purchase a machine gun…
it should be illegal to discharge a firearm randomly at passing traffic. That would put an end to such tomfooolery, once and for all.
.
There oughtta be a law!
Man we just had a case where some asshole fired at a car that had flipped him off. Bullet went through the trunk and hit/killed a 6 y/o in the back seat. They busted the asshole after a few weeks. He’s gonna get life, but man, what an asshole.
Yes, but one more gun law would have stopped that.
Christ.
Anger wells up in me when I think about it. He’d better be glad I’m not involved in prosecuting the case. I’d pull out all the stops to make him suffer.
We had this one not long ago.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shooting_of_Jeremy_Mardis#Outcome
I kept an eye on it and it has been a while since I gave y’all an update. This sums it up.
It’s even worse when the cops do it. I would have zero qualms personally avenging either of these shootings. Zero.
For those that dont remember cop sees husband of girl he is fucking on the side and decides to assassinate the husband. In attempting to do so he killed the child. Even though he is eligible for parole after 20 years I doubt he will get it. If he does get out he might wish he didnt.
I grew up in ABQ with only a swamp cooler. I also had to walk 5 miles uphill both ways to school.
J/K. You northlanders will be fine, just embrace the heat and stay hydrated. Go play in a sprinkler.
Protip: The appropriate way to spend time when it’s that hot is fucking. That’s how I lost my virginity. It was sophomore year at ole’ LCHS and about 112F outside. My GF and I discussed what we could do in such miserable weather and came to the conclusion that clothes were the primary impediment so they had to go. And as long as we were naked we might as well frolic.
That’s some solid logic.
Paging Don for humidity/evaporative cooling effectiveness chart…
Where is Don? Did he escape glibs?
I used to think that. Now I’m in the camp of the eGOP being controlled opposition. It’s not that they’re being cowards or spineless… they’re doing their job very well in pushing the Cathedral’s agenda while paying lip service against it.
They’re like professional wrestling villains, only mindnumbingly boring.
Mindnumbingly boring and getting rich doing it. I am boring as fuck but I just haven’t figured out how to get rich doing it.
Freedom Tunes on Joe Biden vs. Catholicism.
Biden? Joe Biden?
Wow. I had never heard Biden’s statement that he’d spent last summer teaching black men that it’s not unmanly to wear a condom.
That seems like the sort of sound bite that would have been played around the clock had a non-Democrat said it.

First coverage I’ve seen of the SEC going after LBRY/Odysee
W hen Jeremy Kauffman launched his startup company LBRY Inc. in 2016, he hoped to dethrone YouTube and similar video-sharing companies with the same blockchain technology that Bitcoin used to redefine the notion of money.
He didn’t reckon on having to deal with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission.
But in March, the SEC filed civil complaints against LBRY in U.S. District Court in Concord.
The agency, which polices fairness in the securities markets, claims that the cryptocurrency tokens issued by LBRY amount to an investment that must be registered with them. The company said the tokens, or LBCs, are valued at a nickel currently. Viewers use the credits to access videos and other LBRY online content.
If the SEC gets what it wants, the Manchester-based virtual company could end up having to return more than $10 million it has generated from LBCs, which could bankrupt the company as $8 million of that has been spent growing the company, according to Kauffman.
Wait a sec, how is this different than any other store credit system?
Their argument will.be because of the offering.
Combined with its cryptocurrency therefore TEH EVILZ!
They haven’t paid lobbyists like Google has.
Clearly he neglected to kiss the ring.
This sort of shit makes my blood boil. Kill that golden goose, commies. No way will destroying innovation have a detrimental effect on the US economy or on freedom in general.
And totally not politically-motivated either. ?
NH House bails on anti-Biden Gun Control law
After Second Amendment supporters said negotiators had turned it into an “anti-gun bill,” House Republican leaders pulled the plug on a legislative protest of Biden administration gun control moves.
The bill, (SB 154) which had grown into a GOP priority this year, attracted broad opposition from gun rights leaders who considered it an ill-fated compromise.
Deputy House Speaker Steven Smith, R-Charlestown, had moved that the House table the measure and start over with a new bill in 2022.
“I would like an opportunity to have a meeting of the minds this summer to work on a retained bill,” Smith said. “Let’s give them a chance to get this right.”
Rep. Max Abramson, R-Seabrook, vainly tried to keep the compromise alive.
“The Biden-Harris administration just announced another round of quote, ‘super-charged federal gun control’ unquote,” Abramson said. “Let’s pass this critical bill when there is still time.”
STEVE SMITH TABLE SB 154, AND BY TABLE MEAN….
More on NH budget and other Legislative goings-on
THIS IS a back-from-the-dead story.
At the beginning of last week, the controversial trailer bill (HB 2) to the two-year state budget was a dead man walking.
House Majority Leader Jason Osborne, R-Auburn, was given the assignment to cheerlead for a voluntary paid family leave program Gov. Chris Sununu desperately wanted that didn’t have a dozen friends in his GOP caucus.
Some members of House Speaker Sherman Packard’s extended leadership team had asked if they could take a walk and not vote on the trailer bill in protest of that provision.

The epilogue with what happened to all the interviewees was great.
94F outside at 7pm here. It’s 78F inside with the window AC running.
Sounds like the window AC unit is installed backwards.
Dur– misread your post and made a dumb reply. I read it as 74 outside and 78 inside.
His delta T could be higher, more like 18-22 degrees, 16 is a bit low,
Window unit is on the other side of the house. Three rooms, part of a hallway and a J bend, so losing a bit along what way. Plus attic with early 70’s insulation which is giving a pretty good heat load.
Sprayed the roof down, and noticeably feel the heat load from the ceiling decrease. Shoulda done it earlier.
We are sitting right around 100*, and probably 75 in the areas covered by the portables. I really need to look into doing a cut-in with the heating system, but there are only a couple of days like this a year, so I have a hard time justifying it, not to mention all the infiltration due to being an old house.
Baseboard heat and no AC were standard when I was a kid. Heat pumps, both original and retrofitted, seem to have taken over in SFHs.
We get enough marine influence where were at now that in a good year we only need AC from early July to Labor Day, and then not every day.
Yeah, we have the remains of baseboard heaters all throughout the house, but I have been converting them over to outlets and wall boarding the holes. A furnace was installed which, with much creativity, covers the entire house except the master bedroom. But the biggest issue is that I don’t have an attic, so the sun beats down on what is basically the ceiling in the upstairs, as the place used to only have a 6′ ceiling on the second floor, but it was opened up. Great most of the year, sucks today.
We are down to 99F here. 72F in the office, I had to turn the temp up because it was a little chilly. No AC at home so I’m happy to be working.
I run my house at 78, all year long, people think I’m nuts, but I’m a lizard, it can’t be helped.
I’m a northerner so I don’t like it when the temperature is above 75. I love being in the west now and not having to deal with the midwest and New England humidity. I grew up on the east end of US Hwy 2 and now live on the west end, lol.

My oh my,
You get me Q.
My exercise routine changed a little, since I haven’t doing any a little is a big change. I started using the walker to take way bigger steps (in the house), to simulate more normal walking. That keeps my weight on my legs longer and less on my arms. Attempting walking without the walker is tough, I’ve forgotten how to balance without the extra help. I see the doc in 3 more weeks, hoping for the best possible news.
Then, A bear just walked by the garage, same one as before, I’m sure. He walked down the hill, towards the driveway and detoured to walk over to the bee hives. Walked completely around the hives, started to walk away, maybe 75-100 feet, went back to the bees. Must have touch the fence, because he hauled ass about 100 feet, sort of wandered off towards Roy’s 9 PM, 6/27
Just don’t stop excersizing, keep moving,, this kid has a serious hip issue, which makes it hard to walk, but I have no choice at the moment, I must work.
The shit is getting dumber.

Where the Latina bitches at?
I’d heard several of the songs on Dire Straits first album before, and two of them a number of times, but never really the entire album played through. It’s terrific stuff, love the second track and had only heard that one a couple times before. I listen to a lot of streaming radio with different artists and songs, but still enjoy the album format. Also recently found a great Curtis Mayfield album, Roots, a couple weeks back, excellent stuff that’s lesser known than his later (and earlier) albums.

Suspending self service ban AFTER the two hottest days of the heat wave, “due” to the heat.
I don’t see the connection between a heatwave and pumping one’s own gas. Is it too hot for gas station attendants?

People will spontaneously combust more often in very hot weather, this is known. Normally this isn’t a big deal, they may injure or kill one other person in doing so, but it would hardly make the news. if they are near a gas pump it could lead to a devastating fireball that consumed half the block. Oregon knows it’s better safe than sorry in this respect.
Morning, Glibs.

Good God, yesterday’s shift was the awful-terrible. Over 100 here and getting towards 110 tomorrow. I’m not conditioned for this. I’ll be a raisin by the end of the week if this keeps up. I can’t have Gatorade because it messes with my organs. So much water and actually carrying about terry-towels to wipe sweat off my face. Can’t wear my specs because every time I look down they are wont to slide off my nose. Shaved my pate but it still feels like I’m wearing a woolen hat. When I take a break I have to have the a/c cranked full blast. The last time it was this hot here was in 1983. I remember because we went skinny-dipping and I sun-burned my Johnson.
If it’s any consolation it’s 100 here, 100% humidity that is, were it any hotter than 75 degrees I would bail out of this place and go find a desert to live in,
88% right now but it is not quite 3 in the AM. I know lots of you guys deal with worse but we’re not ready for this end of the extreme. 40 Below? Tough but doable. Layers and extra contingencies. +40? Not so much. Supposed to get thunderstorms on Tuesday. Uh-oh.
Our storms aren’t arriving until Thursday. Increasing heat and humidity until then, ugh.
Not to be a pedant asshole, but @ 100% humidity it should be raining
No. At 100% no new moisture will evaporate, but you’re not guaranteed rain. What you will get is condencation on everything if/when the temperature dips.
*condensation.

Sorry to hear sir. Would Pedialyte be a viable option instead of the sugar-water product of Florida’s accursed cow college? Ooh, when I was bicycle commuter in New Orleans, I found some relief keeping an alcohol soaked washcloth in a zip-lock bag for a quick wipe down; the evaporative effect was quite cooling.
If I were pulled over, I’d get a DUI. It’s pretty much zero-tolerance here. Good idea, just not applicable.

As I’m getting more involved with the LP again, I suddenly remember how infested it is with that particular species of atheist that is so incredibly arrogant as to be off-putting to everyone, including agnostics and most other atheists.
Isn’t a meeting of a group of atheists to discuss their (lack of) belief essentially church ?
Put down the tall cans.
This place has cured me of that. “Open your MInd, open your Mind, open your Mind….” I respect so many of the faithful that I’ve met here that I stopped being such a fucking brat about the issue. I’m still an atheist but I try my best to not be a cod about it.
It’s not even that, it’s the tendency to use faith as an ad hominem argument.
“You’re religious, therefore you’re wrong.”
It’s the same as using “racist.”
