This showed up at my front door last night.

Foolishly, I let him in, and now OMWC is ensconced on the patio couch.

So let’s get these little gems out of the way.

No truth to the rumors that Hillary was seen in the area.

I get robocalled by the Red Cross six times a week.

A sign of the greatest timeline ever.

The dark side of Big Bambi.

A lone voice in the wilderness.

How about a little Marshall Tucker Band today?

You know your getting the straight shooting journalism when the author calls the disease “zombie like”

    • Ted S.

Yeah that was a biased article.

    • Q Continuum

      “highly contagious”

Yeah…. no. Prion diseases are not “highly contagious”.

      • Q Continuum

        Further:

        “usually results in death”

Prion diseases always result in death. But how can we possibly expect a “journalist” to do some basic research? That kind of information isn’t readily available on Twitter!

    • Not Adahn

      Hey!

Mad Cow disease happened before Google and Youtube! How can you expect a journalismist to be aware of anything to compare it to!

      • UnCivilServant

Because Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy is oddly fun to say?

      • I'm Here To Help

        Wow, two links, one comment:

I’m banned for life (or life so far at least) from giving blood due to living in England for a cumulative 6 months during the mad cow years. Found that out after waiting in line for about 3 hours to give blood at the Pentagon after 9/11.

On the plus side, I got to eat a lot of steak even on a semester-abroad student budget in England. For some reason beef was very cheap during those years!

      • one true athena

Me too! I did my year abroad for college for that exact year. Early on they said it would be restricted 20 years, but last I checked it was still current ban. *sad face* oh well.

“I didn’t want anyone to see that, but here we are. I am not ashamed of the private video circulating of me on Twitter. This was a recreational activity that I did with my friend at the time, for fun. Like many young people, I have grown into a world where some of our most private moments have been documented online[…]I am a proud BDSMer. I like BDSM activity,”

As goofy as this guy is, I have to give him credit for just owning it. I regularly praise G-d that social media didn’t exist when I was single.

The footage — flagged to The Post by Weiner’s own campaign manager — shows a gagged Weiner

Yeah, someone pointed out last thread that this was obviously a promotional push. Dude was ignored in the campaign until now.

      • Q Continuum

“flagged to The Post by Weiner’s own campaign manager”

        Missed that part…

Yeah this is a Hail Mary plea for attention.

      • Winston

        So a Republican?

      • Winston

Well the primary is soon though. I guess a Democrat then..

Yeah, his manager whipped out this video. Like a good sub, he’s gonna just take what he gets.

Of course Biden had a German Shepherd. Because he seems like the kind of asshole who would use his dog to intimidate other people. Like Putin did to Merkel.

    • Fourscore

…and the Merk got over on Biden with the pipeline. Win-win-win. Even Joe was told he was a winner

    • Semi-Spartan Dad

Of course Biden had a German Shepherd. Because he seems like the kind of asshole who would use his dog to intimidate other people.

I don’t really get this… isn’t that the point of a large breed dog? My three German shepherds are extremely friendly with family and friends, but of of their roles is to intimidate people outside this trusted group. And it’s been very successful marking our home as a high-risk target based on some info that’s been passed on to me by others.

Now, my wife’s cousin has a Belgian Malinois that can’t be controlled. It’s bitten many people, including among their friends and family. My wife was urgently screamed at to grab our daughter and run inside when it accidently got lose and I wasn’t there. I’ve already given fair warning that I’ll put it down on the spot if something like that ever happens again while I’m present.

      • LCDR_Fish

Biden had 2 GS. Apparently Champ was the one that wasn’t biting people. Didn’t read the article to say if he died at the white house or back in DE though.

    • Lackadaisical

      My thought exactly

On Thursday, only 12 people in Canada died from COVID-19. For context, in a typical year 19 Canadians can be expected to die every day from flu or pneumonia. In that same average day, 17 will die of Alzheimers, 38 will be killed in accidents and 11 will die by suicide.

In much of the country, the risks from COVID-19 have now been definitively outstripped by Canada’s other public health emergency: the opioid crisis. Two Albertans died of COVID-19 on Thursday. By contrast, in just the first two months of 2021 Alberta saw an average of four fatal overdoses per day.

    • rhywun

The opioid “crisis” has nothing to do with “public health”, but otherwise it’s an interesting point.

Also interesting is that the one thing certainly making it worse is all the lockdowns.

      • blackjack

True. You get an opiod death by recklessly seeking thrills. You get the ‘vid by other people recklessly being free.

    • Broswater

The part of the article that bugs me the most is this :

”Now, as Florida’s usual world of conferences, summits and book tours start up again, he faces fines and even jail time if he so much as steps outside for a walk before his quarantine ends on Tuesday. He suspects he’s not the only one thinking hard about whether it’s still possible for him to do his job from Canadian soil.”

“This is literally like hanging out a sign and saying ‘global talent, we’re kind of on the fence about you,’” he told the National Post.

Now I really don’t know the guy nor his opinion, but I strongly suspect those people were among the firsts to call for those lockdowns and vote for Trudeau.

Sounds like the type of person that can afford to leave to a better place, say Texas and Florida, and will leave us with the mess here to clean while they go carpetbag another place and start again, having learned nothing.

Those people deserve it strong and hard, and stay locked in in perpetuity.

The trouble is, we haven’t done nearly enough rational assessment of the harms and benefits of anti-Covid strategies. Invoking the idea of existential risk to push us all into complying with behavioural rules got the Government a free pass for policies that, in normal times, would have been unthinkable. Critics of specific measures were easily lumped in with conspiracy theorists who said the whole thing was a hoax, or “just the flu”. Suggesting that baton-charging sunbathers in parks was counter-productive provoked cries of “How many people do you want to die!?”

But there is also a danger that we’ll come to see the world only through the prism of risk, whether quantifiable or existential. If no level of risk is acceptable, why not surrender our everyday freedoms forever? When will we ever reach the point of it being safe to take off the masks and sit next to a stranger? When they first announced a lockdown in March 2020, the UK government turned on the tap of fear, but I don’t think they realised how hard it would be to turn off.

Until Covid came along, that falling appetite for taking risks was a soft cultural slide. Parents worried about letting their children play outside unsupervised (as they probably did at the same age) and then worried about their child’s mental health when their social lives moved online. Intimacy was something that the young, especially, liked to postpone, preferring more casual relationships, and mediation though technology. Why risk the awkwardness of telephone conversations, when you can text instead? Culture, from comedy to Young Adult literature, was trying to be less edgy and more inclusive, by avoiding material that might make somebody uncomfortable.

Very disturbing that technology, safety and prosperity has enabled lockdownism…

Whales sleep one cerebral hemisphere at a time so they can come up to breathe every now and then. Pretty neat.

Weird question…apparently my ebay account has vaporized. My username and email address are both not recognized when I try to log in. It didn’t bother me that much last year and I made a couple “guest” purchases – but I’m wondering if it would be more useful to try and get it reinstated since I did have a good solid rep #.

However…I can’t find any way to contact anyone to ask about it that doesn’t require logging in with something. It was with a hotmail account – and I’d prefer to keep all those details separate from my gmail/etc accounts. I don’t see any emails in my hotmail history about an account being disabled or anything but I suppose I could have missed them if they went to the junk folder a couple years ago.

Anyone aware of a general contact email or something else that I could use? It seems weird that my email account and username are both not recognized at all without getting a message like “suspended” or something else.

      • LCDR_Fish

Thanks. Already tried that but every option requires logging in. I guess they got tired of spam emails so there’s no simple “contact us” email address for general inquiries.

      • blackjack

I hate Ebay with the heat of a thousand suns. I was a pretty prolific seller for a number of years, but then they started ripping me off. A little became a lot and now I just buy and only when I can’t find it from a more reputable source. Hiding from your customers doesn’t seem like a nice way of doing business either.

      • egould310

I’m digging E-bay right now. Between the two auctions I won today and some good “buy it now” deals; I’m cornering the market on MAD Magazine paperback books.

        Buying assets, yo!

      • blackjack

Yeah, there’s still some good stuff to buy there. It’s been watered down with their general “99 cents store” approach, though. They really went nuts on sellers and screwed me numerous times. That’s why most of what they have is new and all the cool old stuff is harder to find. I have better places to sell stuff, that aren’t trying to abuse me. I still buy when I find something I need and it can’t be had elsewhere.

      • rhywun

I’ve only used Ebay a few times – a beer stein, a couple 80’s German sci-fi paperbacks, a 70’s world atlas… I can’t imagine where else I would look to find stuff like that?

      • blackjack

It used to be like America’s yard sale, with everything you could imagine. They fucked with the sellers so much, that anyone who’s not a large business mostly gave up or adjusted prices to make it not worthwhile any more.

      • blackjack

That’s why I get a million identical hits for brand new chinese stuff that’s pretty much full retail instead of all the cool old used stuff that used to be on there. They made it clear that, if you’re not too big to fail, you’re not welcome.

      • rhywun

I get a million identical hits for brand new chinese stuff

I can go to Amazon for that.

      • blackjack

        ‘Zactly!

      • LCDR_Fish

Yeah, I used to use ebay a ton back in college for moving used books, comic books or dvds. Once I get a new account might try a few more batches of books but gotta meet that time/money equilibrium.

I used half.com a lot more for books/movies (non rare stuff – other than some flicks) because they reimbursed you for media mail shipping etc. You just had to list your item for a couple cents less than the next guy – too easy – at least when I worked next to the post office.

The appeasement strategy is working well:

Proud #Juneteenth is now a federal holiday.

As we reflect on the significance of what this day symbolizes, let’s keep fighting to address the lasting consequences of slavery.

    Next step: reparations.

    • The Hyperbole

Right, because no one had the nerve to call for reparations until we made Juneteenth a federal holiday.

      • The Hyperbole

If you have a point just say it I ain’t reading a bunch of wiki’s.

      • Winston

They got a national holiday to talk about how bad America was for having slaves and how America is still shit because of its effects and we need to do more to fully realize emancipation such as reparations.

      • EvilSheldon

You know, I really don’t care if the government thinks that America is bad. I think that the government is bad, so it balances out.

      • Winston

I really don’t care if the government thinks that America is bad.

Except they think that is a good excuse to increase their power over you…

      • The Hyperbole

“They” got a holiday, You have lost your goddamn mind.

Slavery was bad and ending it is worth celebrating. That some idiots want to foist their stupid shit on top of that is no reason not to recognize that very basic fact.

      • EvilSheldon

        What mind?

      • blackjack

Yes. It’s a bit odd that it’s the day the last people found out about it, rather than the day it actually happened, though. Kind of a subtle means of shifting the kudos away from the white guys who actually brought it about and focusing on the black folks who eventually got the news. Not surprising considering the newspeak employed throughout modern America.

      • Winston

“They” got a holiday, You have lost your goddamn mind

I was referring to the Squad and their SJW ilk lest you are trying to insinuate something…

some idiots want to foist their stupid shit

Describing the elites as some idiots doing stupid shit is quite the understatement…

      • The Hyperbole

You are right, I made an assumption, if I was wrong I apologize. However, that just brings us back to my original point that “they” (the squad and their SJW ilk) were going to do all that whether the rest of us celebrate the end of slavery or not. I for one am not going to allow what someone else might do stop me from doing what I think is a decent thing to do.

      • l0b0t

I thought it celebrates the fact that Texas was hard to conquer.

      • trshmnstr the terrible

because no one had the nerve to call for reparations until we made Juneteenth a federal holiday.

Yawn. I don’t give half a shit about Juneteenth becoming a federal holiday, but let’s not pretend that this happened in a vacuum. The context is a racist movement gaining increased traction in society at large. Considering that almost all pro-juneteenth messages I’ve seen have been overtly racist is damn concerning. But people on the fringes advocated something in the past, so that means it doesn’t matter that it’s becoming mainstreamed on the back of this racist movement. ?

      • Winston

Trump actually wanted to make Juneteenth a holiday and Democrats didn’t really care until just last year. Also Juneteeth emoji has a raised fist. Nothing concerning there

      • creech

Can you cite where Trump wanted to make Juneteenth a holiday??

      • creech

Not remarkable that this hasn’t been mentioned lately. I see the news media treated it as some cynical ploy by Trump to gain Black votes. Biden and the Dems would never do such a thing (chuckle).

    • Gender Traitor

The Fed didn’t get enough advance notice, so the banking system couldn’t shut down on a dime. Thus, my credit union was open, so I had to work.

I’m confident the Bidarris administration will find some other way to shut down the banking system with little to no notice. Whether or not they then get it open again remains to be seen.

      • blackjack

AND, more importantly, my asshole mayor didn’t have time to adopt it as a city holiday so I had to work too.

    • rhywun

I’m fully on board with a national holiday to celebrate freedom for all Americans.

Saw an article today that made a convincing argument to ditch one of our other national holidays in favor of it, specifically Veterans Day (combine it with Memorial Day) or better yet Labor Day (commie BS). And of course arguing against politicizing Juneteenth for left-liberal causes. But of course the holiday to go will be Columbus Day.

Ilhan can go suck an egg.

      • Gender Traitor

I can’t see Veterans Day going away – WAAAAY too much “thank you for your service” sentiment for that to fly. Memorial Day has become “start of summer,” and Labor Day, for better or for worse, has become “end of summer.”

::shrugs:: I can live without Columbus Day. The Vikings were here before he was anyway.

      • Winston

::shrugs:: I can live without Columbus Day. The Vikings were here before he was anyway.

        Is that you Neville?

      • EvilSheldon

Toss Washington’s and MLK’s birthdays. Holidays should be based on events, not people.

      • blackjack

The more holidays there are, the less “work” the government does ( not mentioning that I get them all off too!)

      • Gustave Lytton

Someone who voluntarily gave up power rather than rule as a king? Washington has to go.

      • LCDR_Fish

Veteran’s Day has a real worldwide historical connection too – started as Armistice Day – and shared by all our allies – UK (and the Commonwealth), etc.

      • rhywun

Yeah, I would rather keep that one if one of the two had to go.

      • blackjack

Columbus day has been legally changed in Cali to ” indigenous people’s day.” Which I take as a slight to the people who made Goodfellas possible, personally.

        Italian American Heritage Day.

      • Winston

I’m fully on board with a national holiday to celebrate freedom for all Americans.

        Except this won’t be it….

Also does this day do that? Jim Crow, Women couldn’t vote until 1920 and then there is the Indians…

Also the Holiday they really want to get rid of is July 4. Notice that it is Juneteenth National Independence Day. And only two weeks before July 4. And July 4 commerates the actions of a slaveowner…

      • rhywun

Notice that it is Juneteenth National Independence Day

That’s Biden’s politicized name for it. Nobody will call it that.

I agree that all the usual suspects will politicize the fuck out of it, but if there is an event worth celebrating, I can’t come up with many better than eliminating slavery as a very significant advance in bringing reality closer to what was promised in the 1700’s.

      • Stinky Wizzleteats

I’d have no problem with it normally but the formal recognition in today’s atmosphere will be used as a cudgel and a formal admission of the guilt of the father being passed to the son. It will placate no one and is chum in the water to some.

      • rhywun

It will placate no one and is chum in the water to some.

Agreed. Time will tell. I have some small confidence that the American people will reject the worst impulses of the power-hungry.

      • Winston

the American people will reject the worst impulses of the power-hungry.

        I admire your optimism…

      • rhywun

?‍♂️ Pessimism is no healthy way to live life.

      • Gustave Lytton

        But you’ll never be disappointed!

      • Fourscore

Memorial Day or Juneteenth? Kick off of the summer riot/burning/looting season.

There are some preseason events, unscheduled at this time. Portland lost all standing by running a daily schedule, which tended to weaken the impact of the city rivalries.

      • Gadfly

I have some small confidence that the American people will reject the worst impulses of the power-hungry.

I do have more confidence in the American people than in American politicians. A point for optimism would be remembering how California voters last year rejected racist (affirmative action) academic admissions, despite the fact that their elected representatives were almost all in on it.

      • creech

The Union Army ended slavery. None of the three celebrations as shown on tv news tonite (in Philly, Wilmington, and Cherry Hill, NJ) featured any acknowledgment of that fact, nor Union re-enactors. O.K., so time was short to organize, but we will see if any of the parades next year even invite participants from the Civil War descendant organizations. My ancestor suffered a bayonet wound on July 2nd, 1863 – so that’s all the “reparations” you’re getting from my family.

      • Gustave Lytton

You’re arguing like my wife. This has nothing to do with actual reparations, this is about stealing wealth and grabbing power. And you’ll pay unless you can figure out a way to be a beneficiary.

      • blackjack

Man, you got it lucky. My wife argues like one of us is going to die and it had better be me. I knew she was a lawyer when I married her, and when you need one (I often have) that’s when it pays off.

      • Gustave Lytton

Oh, sorry. That’s not when she’s arguing with me, that’s when she hears something on the tv news that she disagrees with. She accepts their premise and their purported concerns as if they’re arguing in good faith and want a fair outcome. If only I was that lucky.

      • creech

That’s why I put “reparations” in quotes.

    • Loveconstitution1789

Democrats are trying anything to distance the selves from the fact that they are party fo slavery, KKk, segregation, and Jim Crowe laws.

Democrats have traded in black american slavery for american slavery under socialism/communism.

I think I first heard of it in college in Buffalo in the nineties. It was pretty big there.

      • commodious spittoon

It popped up on my Outlook calendar, and I thought Fuck you, Microsoft, but mostly because fuck you, Microsoft.

I hate Ebay with the heat of a thousand suns.

This. Ebay and paypal and everyone who works for them can die in a fire.

Biden doesn’t deserve a German Shepherd.

You know who else didn’t deserve a GSD?

    • Fourscore

FDR? He didn’t have one because he didn’t deserve one. He had another dog named Eleanor

Suckers always rolling into New Orleans thinking they can perpetrate. Then Yancey Derringer an Pa-Koo have to shut that shit down. On Amazon Prime. Classic.

A quick image search shows you need to pick up the physical media and quick if you really like that show.

      • egould310

Just a trifle to watch as I sip vodka, and fry a rib eye. But pistols, knives, fist fights, gambling, and opium are always fun.

  26. Gustave Lytton

    More thoughts:

Juneteenth is gonna be fun when make up snow days run up into it in good snow years.

Having explicitly made a black holiday, every other racial and ethnic group will want to get in on the fun (except the Eyetalians, because FYTW). And I can only imagine the slur names for the holidays that racists, well the racists not pushing it, will come up with it.

    • l0b0t

Thanks to the success of remote learning, NYC Board Of Ed. has already announced that there will be no more snow days; kids will log on to remote learning if the weather is too inclement.

      • Stinky Wizzleteats

        Ah, there you go…problem solved.

      • blackjack

HAH! It never snows in Los Angeles, so we won’t even wait until then. Everyday, from now on, the teachers will retain their mute buttons and get paid even more perks and get a raise. NY is a bunch of pikers.

      • C. Anacreon

That’s sad for future generations of kids. There was an incredible joy in listening to the local radio station, patiently waiting and hoping to hear your school district mentioned as closed due to the blizzard. Then if you heard it, you screamed in delight and went to break out the Flexible Flyer. Instead they will get to sit at a computer all day and look out their windows at drifts they don’t get to play in.

    • Stinky Wizzleteats

You are correct but they can just push the make up days into the weekend if necessary. There’s plenty of Saturdays to work with.

    • Tundra

Lol. My buddy and I bought a massively vandalized house in Prior Lake during the last downturn. Literal shit smeared on the walls and all the doors destroyed.

We made a bunch on that one.

Thanks, vandals who don’t know what really costs!

590 literally buys a vacant lot that’s got building challenges around here. A small one.

Meh, that’s how L.A. cops work already. They scan the crowd and look for people who match the description of those they have caught before. Anyone with even a hint of fear upon seeing them get’s the third degree. If they match the profile good enough, the cops will frame you for something and think they did society a favor. Every once in awhile, they get caught. The rest just pretend it’s only that one guy. Rinse and repeat.

I was in meetings at a hospital yesterday. They were cancelling all elective surgeries that might require transfusions. Between the lockdowns – no blood drives at high schools and colleges – and people who can’t donate because they are getting vaccines – blood banks are scary low.

    • blackjack

So fucked up. Actually endangering lives just to get the upper hand on a president you don’t like for…reasons.

      • Akira

Girlfriend’s father (who has advanced lung cancer) missed several chemotherapy treatments because they were deemed “non-essential”.

It just pissed me off beyond belief how any opposition to the COVID hysteria religion was written off as “killing grandma because you want frosted tips”.

Fuck the lockdowns and fuck everyone who screamed for more restrictions.

    • rhywun

That’s an interesting knock-on effect I hadn’t thought of. I wonder what other surprises are in store.

    • Stinky Wizzleteats

You can’t donate if you’ve been vaccinated?

      • Gustave Lytton

        Only for convalescent plasma.

For regular blood giving, there’s no waiting period if you’re symptom free (which is the same as pre covid, don’t donate if you’re sick) and received one of the three FDA approved vaccines or AstraZeneca or Novavax.

        https://www.redcrossblood.org/local-homepage/news/article/covid-19-vaccination-guide-blood-donation.html

I am always somewhat skeptical of shortage announcements. Blood is a perishable product and the blood banks are dependent on donations to ensure a constant flow. The last thing they will ever say is they have enough donors, thanks, and see their supply dry up.

    • Loveconstitution1789

I am being offered $20 to give blood by red cross. I dont wear a mask and they want masks worn, so no blood for them.

Plus, I am having a moral dilemma about helping large percentages of Lefties who need blood. Fuck em. I am betting that when the numbers come in, Lefty supporters need more blood than nonLefties.

    • Stinky Wizzleteats

It’s just a conspiracy theory until it isn’t.

    • C. Anacreon

The tweet replies of people saying “no big deal, we’ve always had to prove vaccinations to travel” are truly annoying. I have been to every continent except Antarctica and have never once needed to prove vaccinations. For a couple of places some were “recommended”, never required.

These folks couldn’t be happier to submit their freedoms, and will happily lie to get others to agree.

    • Festus

      Good stuff! Keep at it.

Carrying on from that, I liked Massie’s idea that the only day fedgov could do any work was every four years on Feb 29.

      • Chafed

        Makes sense to me.

      • Ownbestenemy

Half my equipment agrees the other half needs attention. Then again, I want my job private cause I know I could do this shit for cheaper than what the FedGov pays all of us.

So apparently the state of CO will soon start calling the “unvaccinated” to encourage them to comply. No, that is not borderline illegal. At. All.

  33. rhywun

OFFS the bodies are still fresh.

Two participants in a Florida Pride parade were run over by a truck Saturday night, in what the mayor of Fort Lauderdale called a “terrorist attack against the LGBT community.”

The driver and the victims are members of the Fort Lauderdale Gay Men’s Chorus, according to the group’s leader, who said the incident was unintentional.

“To my knowledge, it was an accident. This was not an attack on the LGBTQ community,” the chorus’ president Justin Knight said in a statement.

Anti-Tenor terrorism by a bass or a baritone?

But yeah – lead with the boneheaded, uninformed spouting off by the ignorant mayor.

(Maybe the driver was going after DWS?)

      Narrowly missed DWS…?

Good morning to this morning’s morning crew – LCDR, Ted’S, l0b0t, ‘sloper, rhy, & Sean (and you lurkers – speak up!) Happy Fathers Day, as appropriate! All is sunny & serene here at Tranquility Base, in stark but pleasant contrast to yesterday morning, though as I was pitching “camp” this morning, there were more sirens wailing down the nearby main drag than usually warranted by a “code” at the nearby retirement complex or Doc-in-the-box. Hope no one’s morning is being ruined by a structure fire.

Hope all of you are having a delightful day so far. This afternoon, TT & I will bake in the sun watching our beloved local minor league team. Much sunscreen will be the order of the day.

    • Sean

      Good mornin.

I gots burgers and steaks to grill today. Gonna be a good day. ?

      • Gender Traitor

We grilled Italian sausages from Sam’s, with little cherry fry pies from the farmers’ market for dessert! 😀
