Good morning my Glibs and Gliberinas! And what a wonderful morning it always is!
You can’t spell shitshow without NYC.
I’m always amazed by how the left doesn’t mentally grasp that this is illegal.
CNN nearly lost half of its viewers in the last year.
Creepy old man keeps doing creepy weird things.
Walmart to offer its own house brand of insulin.
That’s all I got for today. I’ll leave you with a song and move along with my day.
Porky is free!
That’s all, Folks!
I hope he made it home safe.

Looks more like Petunia to me. Being dropped off by the hillbilly who took her home last night.
Nice for them to openly admit they can just add votes whenever they want.
Even though this has jack to do with elections in other places, this will stick in peoples’ minds as evidence of how fragile the system is.
Really, it’s probably just a spreadsheet or something, but still.
Incredible that there isn’t a “real election mode” or something that ensures that testing data cannot be included in an official count. Or even a manual procedure to verify that test data aren’t loaded before counting a real election.
If there’s not a method to ensure that, then there’s no assurance that it doesn’t happen. The more I read about this, the more convinced I become that our elections are run by complete incompetents. And those incompetent people might not be fixing elections, but their failures leave wide open holes for actual bad actors to influence results.
“What do you mean we can’t test in Production? Was that wrong?”
–said not even any junior developer, ever
I can only surmise that this was done on purpose and they got busted.
I subscribe to a mailing list called “RISKS” which is supposed to be centered on identifying and mitigating the risks of computer technology in society. They used to be pretty good until over the last 15 years or so, the list posters have become less and less circumspect about airing their political opinions, and not being able to keep them out of the technical discussion.
Anyway, for years, there were a few posters who spent a lot of time discussing the RISKS of electronic voting systems and election system security in general. It was common to see in every digest post at least one discussion of problems with different election counting systems, and in particular, deep criticism of firms like Dominion.
Guess when most of that discussion stopped?
I should point out that while I’m still subscribed, I haven’t read the list carefully for several years, because the politicization of it had become pretty tedious. So I may have missed some things recently.
And I’m sure that they will resist revealing how the data is handled and tallied once it leaves the voting machines. “Because tricknologists would use that info to compromise future elections.”
And that’s my problem with the whole thing Tonio. The people felt confidence in the system back when, even though it was fragile and had some serious holes, because we couldn’t believe our political & bureaucratic classes would just go abuse it. Now we are at the point that so many of us understand the psychosis and quest for power that drives these people with agendas, and all these fragile points seem to exist – by design – because it favors those that now have a problem with the electorate not giving them what they want.
A system that rewards people with as much power as our electoral system does (you get to rob the biggest treasury on the planet) will ALWAYS be a target for those that seek that power. One that lacks transparency and chain of custody – by design – can be assumed to lead to cheating because the risk vs. rewards are just going to be worth getting caught and even punished. That’s a fact that can’t be disputed.
Censoring people that feel something is not right and fighting any attempts to do the most simple of verification that nothing bad or untoward happened, tells me they took advantage of the opportunities that were especially created to improve the odds of cheating and getting rewarded by said cheating – even if I have no direct proof other than the results statistically don’t make sense – in the areas where they knew they could make a difference.
Continuing to accuse people trying to bring transparency to the system and closing of the loopholes used to cheat of doing so because they are racists, tells me that they know they can’t win without the cheating and are using their usual ad hominem attacks to hide the fact that that’s what they want. We have a banana republic election system, and the people that profited from that in 2020 have bet everything on keeping it so so they can avoid a massive reversal of fortune in 2022 and 2024.
Fuck them.
“Colorblind” justice is just white tricknology.
The election officials are trying to emulate the lawyers. Take something very simple and straightforward and complicate it so much that you can cheat it to get any outcome you want. California passes an astounding number of new laws every year. Every thing that normal people believe is a crime was illegal hundreds of years ago. That should have sufficed. Similarly, votes were simple to count for almost all of our history. Why, now are they so controversial? By design.
I guaran-damn-tee you that a majority of the voters are too stupid to understand the subtleties of rank-choice voting. It’s just a feel-good mechanism where they can say the voted for the socialist or the green (as first choice). It also eliminates run-off elections which tend to have much lower participation, which is not necessarily a bad thing.
“I’m always amazed by how the left doesn’t mentally grasp that this is illegal.”
I think people used to understand this, but now we are really committed to the regression. We are backsliding with increasing momentum.
“We don’t believe in facts, we believe in truth!”
And truth is whatever the people that assign us our marxist beliefs tell us it is!
Don’t you dare point out that there is a problem because I believed up was up yesterday, and today I believe up is down! It is whatever it needs to be to further the agenda!
I’ve never been amazed by things like this. Proglodytes want power. They care about illegality/legality only to the extent that it helps them get power.
Say what you will about Former President Cartoon Villain, he sold soap.
Shitty soap that wouldn’t clean Nacho dust from your favorite t-shirt but it was soap, all the same. The Dems are like the actors paying Doctors from those old cigarette commercials.
Heh the smoking doc on BSG was one of my favorite characters.
On the old Perry Mason tv show, which currently rerun daily on both the Sundance Channel and MeTV, not only do all the doctors smoke, they have ashtrays at their desks and offer cigarettes to their patients in for consultation, so everyone can have a smoke while they discuss your health situation.
Walmart to offer its own house brand of insulin. – this is bad because it is motivated by profit
Walmart is destroying good, high-paying union jobs in the insulin mines.
That just flashed an image of IP lawyers filing down into a salt mine, and that made me smile.

Because that would call into question all the race-based “affirmative action” of the last half-century. Not sure how any of that is legal.
They, the smart ones anyway, know it’s illegal as fuck. They know they can get away with it, because HISTORICAL INJUSTICES.
But, this precedent is huge. It’s not binding on other circuits, but will open the door for more suits, and hopefully a circuit split after which SCOTUS will have to take it up.
And in a generation or two, we will have new classes of grievance mongers for us to cater to – it perpetuates our program!
hopefully a circuit split after which SCOTUS will have to take it up.

Went for a walk yesterday late in the PM, and I got to tell you that after my 5 miles I was soaked and needed two showers to cool down.
In their tiny little childlike minds, “justice” supersedes legality.
Of course! The only thing that takes precedence over Justice is DEMOKRACEE!
Yeah, where DEMOCRACY is we win every election. It can’t be DEMOCRACY if we lose.
A thread on the misuse of the word “virulent”.
I’m seeing articles saying that the delta variant is more virulent.
eg: “citing the spread of the more virulent Delta coronavirus variant in the United Kingdom”
Earlier in the year the same was said about the alpha (Kent) variant, that it was more “virulent”.
That was untrue.
Virulent means “harmful”, not “infectious”.
If anything the evidence is suggesting that the delta variant may be less virulent, but more transmissable (infectious).

Good morning, Banjos!
Walmart’s insulin move is genius. Aisles and aisles of shit to give you the beetus, then insulin for dessert.
Brilliant.
Joe is an embarrassment. I couldn’t quite make out what he was saying, but it sounded an awful lot like cutting more checks. What could go wrong?
WHAT DO YOU MEAN THE TREASURE IS BROKE?
WE STILL HAVE TONS OF PAPER, PRINTERS, INK, AND PEOPLE WILLING TO PRINT LARGE BILLS!
It’s worse. Walmart has installed tricknology laser beams in the store to keep color folk from seeing the heathy foods. They can only see aisles of ice cream and grape soda. Then they sell them the insulin. Democrats have to do something!
Grab life by the cheeks on Ass Wednesday.

Anyone else ever read the other parts to the Star Bangles banner poem?
From the article:
“The third stanza of the song reads: “And where is that band who so vauntingly swore, That the havoc of war and the battle’s confusion. A home and a Country should leave us no more? Their blood has wash’d out their foul footstep’s pollution. No refuge could save the hireling and slave. From the terror of flight or the gloom of the grave, And the star-spangled banner in triumph doth wave. O’er the land of the free and the home of the brave.””
I don’t read that as racist at all. I am crazy here?

This is the first I’m hearing of this “controversy”.
The controversy was that someone that placed third found a way to get free publicity by being a total jackass and robbing the person that set a new record to win it.
This.

Round up the usual suspects
It’s not yet clear how climate change is affecting the jet stream and resulting weather systems, but the consequences of these complex atmospheric perturbations taking place against the backdrop of global warming is well understood.
Average temperatures in the Pacific Northwest have warmed by roughly 1.3 degrees since 1895, according to the University of Washington’s Climate Impacts Group, and most cities in the region feel more than 2 degrees warmer in the summer than they did in 1970.
“Along with that warming, we’ve seen an increase in extreme heat events, and these events are becoming more frequent, more intense and longer in duration,” said Meade Krosby, a senior scientist with the Climate Impacts Group.
It’s a trend that is playing out across the country. A national climate assessment conducted in 2018 found that heat waves in the U.S. occurred an average of six times per year in the 2010s, up from an average of two times a year five decades earlier.
The effects of extreme heat are similarly being felt around the world. Parts of eastern Europe and Russia are currently baking under record highs, with some Bulgarian cities predicted to reach 104 degrees and temperatures in Siberia soaring to nearly 90 degrees.
Though attributing any specific event to climate change is tricky, scientists say the overall effect of global warming is undeniable, creating conditions that are ripe for heat waves and other extreme weather events.
“The question is no longer if climate change caused a specific heat event, but by how much,” Krosby said.
——-
“All of this adds to the danger and risk that we face,” he said. “Climate change absolutely loads the dice towards more extreme events.”
Why isn’t every day just like the day before? Variability is confusing and scary.
WE’RE ALL GONNA DIE!!! RUN FOR YOUR LIVES!!!!!
It’s HOT!!! Climate change because of global warming!!
But if it’s cold, climate isn’t weather.
I think the way it works is: Any weather event can be held up as evidence of climate change, but if you point out normal weather patterns as evidence that things are not that bad, you’re told that “weather is not climate”.
I also enjoyed this Argument by Assertion:
The science has spoken!
Even if any of that is true (and it’s a proven fact that much of the earlier data are manipulated for political purposes), there is zero proof that any of it is man-made or that it’s even a problem.
As an actual scientist (and not of the #IFLS!!! variety), I was taught that extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence. The claim that human activity is primarily responsible for altering the climate of the Earth in such a way that’s so detrimental that the only way to deal with it is drastically alter the population’s lifestyle top-down certainly qualifies as extraordinary. All I’ve ever seen for evidence are a bunch of hamfisted graphs overlaying CO2 on top of temperature with absolutely no context or discussion of confounding variables or controls.
Of course we all know it’s not about any of that; it’s about gaining control over the population.
Science denier!
I have really found any of the morons supporting the marxist globalist fix to this contrived cult’s new claims of Armageddon have any idea of how the scientific principle works or that scientific consensus is proof of biased people doing anything but science.
“t’s not yet clear how climate change is affecting the jet stream and resulting weather systems, but the consequences of these complex atmospheric perturbations taking place against the backdrop of global warming is well understood.”
What?
We don’t know what it’s doing, but we that what it’s doing is bad.
My main irritation is when there is a cold snap in summer, we are always reminded that that is weather and not climate. But when there is a heat wave for a week, that is totes climate.
This.
I’m in Central KY. This time of year should be in the mid-90s with high as fuck humidity every day.
Today we’re getting a cold front. The high through Saturday will only be in the 70s.
We’ve only had a handful of days reach 90 so far.
But of course there’s no talk about how mild a summer we’re having.
Just keep feeding that data back into the random number generator, eventually we’ll get the right results.
Shorter: We have no idea what is going on, but we are going to use it to push collectivist policies.
“…It’s not yet clear…”
The more you fucksticks study it the less clear it gets. Soon we will know nothing at all about it.

“In June of 2021, CNN had an average of 580,000 total daily viewers – a drop of 49% compared to June of 2020. The network also lost 59% of its viewers in the critical 25 – 54 age demographic, with an average of 133,000 total day viewers in the demographic for the month of June.”
How many of those people were at the airport?
ISTR that Fawx lost even more but remains above CNN. Or something. Who cares, really.
I’ve walked through more than my fair share of packed airports. I’ve never actually seen anyone watching CNN. It’s on and no one is watching it. We all have our own devices or people are reading books or taking a nap.
good question. Although I make a point to find the seat furthest from any TV blasting a news channel when waiting at an airport.
Where is our temperature equity? Where is our water fairness?
Where is our weather justice?
What gets me is how Climate Change is not only an existential threat now, but also the prime mover of all of history. If you look at any modern take on any migration, invasion, or civilization collapse, you’ll see the historian mentioning climate change.
Even in wiki articles they sometimes accidentally say about 3000 BC Europe being warmer than now but will soon be edited out I expect
If you don’t market your agenda, that other guy’s agenda might win out! That would be horrible!
Before climate change, what would you say was the prime mover? God? People who aspired to be gods?
It’s the attempt to shoehorn climate change as an explanation to any event in history that makes it seem more like a sort of ideological framework.
It definitely is religious, I have no other explanation.
I think it’s more fundamental than that.
“If we affect climate, we’re powerful.”
“If the effects of our impacts on climate are bad, we / some of us are bad.”
“We must exert our powers to fight the evil ones!”
“If we’re fighting against evil, we are both powerful and good” — which trumps the first two points in terms of emotional wallop.
A while back, an archaeological team found a statue of a Roman emperor that was missing its head. Naturally, they thought the head had been broken off but after careful examination they found that the statue was created headless. Seems that as part of the cult of emperor-worship, whenever the current officeholder died, the old head came off and the new leader’s head replaced it. Cheaper than carving a whole new statue, no?
Strikes me that as part of the statist hustle, someone makes a menacing headless sculpture and from time to time plants a visage on it labeled “Systemic Racism” or “Social Injustice” or “Climate Change” or whatever can be used to frighten and stampede people in a particular direction – or is it a misdirection? – while gaining power for their chosen group.
There is a tiny plaque at the bottom of that statue, barely readable, which says, “Fraud”.
I find it funny that they bring it up at all in history because that means that it was happening long before human activity could have been much of a factor.
I think the point of that is to say: “look at how much climate affects human civilization even when it is naturally caused. Imagine how much worse it will be due to anthropogenic forcing!”
The thing is historians/anthropologists (the honest ones at least) will point to some evidence that could create a causal relationship between, say the Bronze Age Collapse or Early Hominids’ migration to the coasts and changing climate patterns. These hacks do what hacks do and start with their conclusion and work backwards from there.
Look bub, if I actually have to collect data and interpret it – it might contradict my theory. Why would I want to do THAT?
I am half convinced that Climate ‘Science’ researchers’ primary tool is a Magic-8 Ball that has ‘Answer unclear, Blame AWG’ written on every panel.
Yeah, that science stuff sounds hard; I think there are easier ways to get paid.
As long as people “feel like” their votes make a difference, DEMOCRACY! works.
That is kinda how it works. Governments are powered by confidence in its institutions. In the last general election TEAM BLUE burnt at least a plurality of polity’s confidence in the system.

Youth is always wasted on the young, I should know, I wasted mine. It was great.
An older woman I worked with a few decades ago nailed it; if two people are attracted to each other, it totally cool. But if one isn’t into the other, then it is sexual harassment.
Anything else is irrelevant.
Step one, be attractive. Step two, don’t be unattractive.
Kolakowski has the straight line: Marx=Lenin=Trotsky=Stalin=Lukacz etc.
In econ, it leads him to treat War Communism, NEP and collectivization as the same thing, or as everything inevitably leading to collectivization & mass murder. No “degrees of freedom”.
But if Bukharin’s policies had won (as seemed in 1926-8), USSR might have developed as China post-78. Large increase in agro output, export of the surplus, use of money for industrialization, alliance btw small & medium peasantry and workers.
https://twitter.com/BrankoMilan/status/1409996139395485705
Well given Stalin was who he was alternative policies could not have won. This Bukharin fella was on the side of Stalin many years so the gulags would still happen. And the economic problems inherent in communism still don’t change, unless the USSR went full “not communism but authoritarianism kinda fascism kinda capitalism but pretend it is communism” like China.
Fascism is not really an economic model though. It is a method of animating the population using highly curated history and a real or imagined enemy. In terms of economic policy, all of the ‘fascist’ states ended up as socialist. Not necessarily Marxist, but socialist all the same. Nazi Germany allowed companies to, more or less do as they pleased, so long as they were politically reliable and immediately responsive to state demands. The Chinese have taken the Nazi Germany model and thrown it into overdrive.
Sold out
Record high home price appreciation is sidelining ever more buyers and finally taking the bang out of the pandemic-induced housing boom. Weekly mortgage demand is falling along with it, down 6.9% for the week according to the Mortgage Bankers Association’s seasonally adjusted index. That is the lowest level in almost a year and a half.
Mortgage applications to purchase a home dropped 5% for the week and were 17% lower annually. That is the slowest pace since the start of May 2020, when lockdowns were in full force.
Demand is now slumping due to weakening affordability, especially at the lower end of the market where demand is strongest. Home prices rose more than 14% in April year over year, according to the latest S&P CoreLogic Case-Shiller national price index released Tuesday. Craig Lazzara of S&P Dow Jones Indices called the unprecedented jump, “Truly extraordinary.”
What if we’re running out of buyers?
Nothing a few government subsides won’t solve.

San Francisco comes to the countryside. Now all they need is bums crapping on the streets.
Since I linked a Bangles song, who aged better? Them or the Go-Gos ?
The music or the chicks?
Yes.
I was originally thinking the womyn, but Ill accept either submission.
For the music, I’d say The Bangles, but I always liked their songs better than The Go-Gos (although I thought Manic Monday was meh.)
For the chicks, I leave that determination to those whose preference tends their way.
Manic Monday was genius. Kudos to Prince.
Just another manic Monday.
Wish it was Sunday.
That’s my fun day.
I don’t have to run day.
Not the most stellar example from Prince’s oeuvre.
I appreciate the lack of lyrical pretension, but more importantly the music itself is a masterpiece of pop construction.

Food prices and the Little Divergence

One of the less remarked upon ‘divergences’ in the economic history literature is the ‘Little’ Divergence between West Africa and Southeast Asia in the twentieth century. Up until around the 1970s, the differences in income between the two regions were not large. But after that point, Southeast Asia grew much quicker. Some Southeast Asian countries—Laos, Cambodia, Myanmar—have followed a more ‘West African’ path, but broadly speaking the divergence in striking.

We’re no Chicago, but we have a shit-ton of shootings lately. Hundreds of rounds fired, occasionally someone is hit.
My question: where the fuck are they getting the ammo?
They are certainly also not getting any education on how to hit what you are shooting at, it sounds…
oooh!! ooooooh!! conspiracy theory time!
tinfoil hat on
leftist orgs are buying up all the ammo at the wholesale level and caching/distributing it to their armed wings to simultaneously increase public “gun violence” to force action on gun control, and to supply their troops once the law abiding right is disarmed.

I’d buy that for a dollar.
I still say that the $600/week pay raise for all the useful idiots last year was to buy guns and ammo.

“Creative articulation, my good man.”
There’s ammo widely available. Just not at “reasonable” prices.
I never had trouble getting ammo, but yeah the prices are still a bit high. I just got some 9mm at $0.40/rnd (shipping and tax included) and felt like it was a decent deal. Still not back to $0.20/rnd like the old times, but it’s low enough that I’m starting to stock up again.
Criminals can stockpile, too.
Not as if they waste any at the range practicing. Every round is fired in anger.
This is commonly believed, and completely false.

That’s a low bar.
Can you trade EBT for ammo?
I’m not sure what security is involved in EBT, but I’m certain there is a way. Maybe trade goods for ammo after purchasing the goods?
In the old days with food stamps, they were commonly stolen or traded.
From Q’s link:
But today’s horror at last generation’s idea of a meet cute also reflects a bone-deep discomfort among young people with the sort of spontaneous, unscripted interaction that can spark an unexpected connection, like chatting up an attractive stranger in an elevator.
For a generation that prides itself on openness to experience, millennials have remarkably little confidence in their ability to navigate the complicated, confusing, or otherwise ambiguous territory of adult intimate relationships.
The far-reaching impact of the #MeToo movement may be visible here. What started as a well-intentioned attempt to protect women from pervasive harassment and abuse evolved into something more nefarious; young people have been taught to equate emotional discomfort with trauma and violation, and have thus come to believe that the only “good” relationship offers complete safety from ever feeling bad.

I didn’t really know much about the guy until I heard they were rebooting Cosmos back in 2014. I was kind of turned off but wasn’t sure why. Today I think it’s endlessly frustrating that people don’t understand that believing in science is taking us into a new dark age.

Hmm…. interesting breeding program possibilities.
Oh. Right. The government is running it.
Blech.
They want to breed low intelligence, high government dependency, workhorses…
As Juris has pointed out, Idiocracy isn’t going as planned so the government needs to nudge us in that direction.
Cass Sunstein smiles as his hands move under the table.
There’s ammo widely available. Just not at “reasonable” prices.
“Why, back in the good old days, you could buy a brick of .22 for three fiddy!”
“The Small Business Association (SBA) “fully-cancelled” federal funds after a lawsuit was filed in Texas by a conservative legal group arguing that the Biden administration’s efforts to prioritize applicants on the basis of race and gender is unconstitutional, Reuters reported.
In February, the Biden administration issued changes to the $1.9 trillion American Rescue Plan which prioritized women and minority-owned businesses to receive aid before their white-owned restaurant counterparts.”
What about all the other programs only available to non-whites and women?
“Women, Infants, and Children”
WIC, in its earlier form where you got maybe 30 bucks of essentials I always thought was the only program I agreed with.
Then it has since been bastardized to include items I still normally pass up due to cost and needs for my family.
It’s way more that. There are thousands of them.
“The line of insulin products was developed by Novo Nordisk, one of three insulin manufacturers that dominate over 90% of the market, to create Walmart’s private ReliOn brand. The vials will be priced at $72.88, whereas the non-Walmart brand of Novo Nordisk insulin retails for about $144.68 per vial. The store will also dispense a less costly version of a prefilled insulin pen that allows patients to deliver the hormone without having to rely on individual vials, called the FlexPen, for roughly $85. In total, Walmart projects cost savings for patients of up to $101 per Walmart-branded vial or $251 per package of FlexPens.”
Good story for a Wednesday, but Great Value insulin should be $5. I blame the government.
I have survived vacation, and almost dug out from the
idiotspeople who ignored my out of office message, and sent in multiple requests for updates to just me while I was out of the office. Did I miss anything important around here?Where do I begin ?
Following the modern trend, at some point in the middle, then flashback with an X days/hours/weeks earlier title card.
That’s the fucking worst. When I go on vacation, I leave an out of office message and my manager’s email if there’s an emergency. But yet they still send me multiple emails. Once I was on vacation in Florida and this Account Manager somehow found my cell phone number through the system and called me. I stupidly picked up and he started going on and on about this deal he needed approved and finally I cut him off and was like, “If you read my out of office message, you would know that I’m on vacation along with how to reach my manager. And also, my laptop is in Chicago, so I can’t help you even if I wanted to and please don’t call my personal number.”
I love how entitled they always make the e-mails too. “It’s been 18 hours, and I’ve heard nothing on this. Can we please have an update?”
No. No you cannot. I was on vacation in a place with minimal cell coverage, and didn’t bring my work laptop. I did a quick look through my work e-mail yesterday evening just to see if there was any big outages or changes I had to be aware of. Which I was glad of, since they didn’t fully test something yesterday afternoon, so I got 3-4 outage calls right at the beginning of my shift.
Welcome back.
Sorry about the outage calls.
I look forward to my vacation. We’re going to demo a major feature that I’ve been involved with while I’m on vacation. The more I think about it, the more I might work that day.
I am a bad person because I always bring my work laptop with me.
Before you judge me too harshly let me explain how that decision brings peace to the family. I’m the only real morning person in my family. The rest of the family loves to sleep in. Before bringing the work laptop, I would use my native Minnesoda passive aggressive super powers and start rattling around the hotel room to wake them up with the noise I was making. For some reason they resented that.
Then for some vacation, I brought a laptop and used the mornings to catch up on emails and keep things sort of running. Spent that hour or so productively and let the family sleep in. Went so well, that it has become the way we do things.
* Also a lot of times I was working at some startup, so there really wasn’t anyone else to cover for me when I was on vacation.
Same. It works fine for me and the family, and I have no mountain of shit to climb when I get back.
My concern is some strict security rules when it comes to my work laptop. And the issues if it gets damaged in travel.

SCIENCE!the unionLeaders of the Detroit automakers and the United Auto Workers union have agreed to make face masks optional for employees who are fully vaccinated against Covid -19.
Workers for the companies, including non-salaried employees, won’t have to show proof of vaccination, according to officials with the UAW and General Motors, Ford Motor and Stellantis (formerly Fiat Chrysler).
The Tuesday announcement comes after a task force between the companies and the union reviewed medical experts’ reports, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention guidelines and Occupational Safety and Health Administration standards on how to safely work through the pandemic.
The UAW and automakers last month lifted some Covid-19 protocols ,strong>but not the masks, which have been a major complaint of plant employees, many of whom do physical work in hot environments.
“While the UAW and the companies continue following the protocols that have kept our workplaces safe, we know that one of the best ways to fight this virus is by getting vaccinated,” the UAW said in a statement. “The Task Force continues to encourage everyone to roll up their sleeves and get vaccinated against COVID-19 so that we can protect our sisters and brothers and their families.”
We know what’s best. Shut up and do as you’re told, they explained.
Did I miss anything important around here?
Nah. Cynicism, mockery and heckling, as usual.

I remember really enjoying a Clive Barker book from the 80’s. “Tapestry” or some such what not? I also remember not liking a single one of his novels after that one.
An excellent overarching point – if you coddle your anxiety with avoidient and compensating behaviors, this is how you end up.
Instead, destroy your anxiety by forcing yourself to do things that make you uncomfortable.
This is a lesson that I wish I had learned earlier.
I am still learning this one. There’s really no easy way to learn it. Taking the easy way is what got me into this mess.
I was terrified of heights until the AF made me climb towers on tops of mountain tops. Getting over that anxiety has led to one of my enjoyable skills

Hey if the Pope’s around, sorry to hear about the Pater. I signed out early yesterday. Sudden and unexpected is the best way to go unless Grandpa is driving the family about.
Thanks Festus. The good will from this site is awesome. I hated to dump my shitshow on you bastards, but I feel like you guys are closer than most of the meat bags I deal with.
A couple years ago cancer finally got my mom. It took her six months or so to pass. Dad was fit as hell and went suddenly. We’ve been debating the two. With Mom, you got to say goodbye, prepare yourself, but had to watch her wither away. With the Old Guy, you didn’t get to say goodbye, but your last memories were of him full of life and joking around.
Verdict: they both suck.
Also, please declutter your life. Maybe write down all the important stuff and put it somewhere your loved ones can find it if the unthinkable happens. Dad was pretty good about decluttering, but figuring out his system of living has been a bit of poser. For example, we discovered that the bolts to all his rifles were missing. Why? Who knows. Took a day and a half before someone ran across them in a box in a different room.
^^^^ x1000. Also sorry to hear Pope.
This place has gotten more of life’s problems laid upon it and the response is always an open ear. Truly grateful for this place.
Dont forget empathy, sympathy, and shared experiences. Both great and not-so-great.
Sorry Your Holiness.
For example, we discovered that the bolts to all his rifles were missing. Why? Who knows. Took a day and a half before someone ran across them in a box in a different room.
My first thought: Quick and dirty protection against theft. I did that once with my rifles when I had a party at my house.
That is my theory too. He goes to Texas every year during the winter.
Our house in our small town has a front door that has no functioning lock.
Verdict: they both suck.
Yeah when you lose someone you love, there is no good way for it to happen. The only worse thing I’ve ever had to witness was my brother’s wife losing her son (his step-son). At least when our parents go, it’s somewhat according to natural order.
My condolences, Jimbo. I hope you and your family are hanging in there.
I have no idea why voting machine software isn’t open source. It should be just an adding machine. Sure, someone has to build the hardware, but the software should be so simple that there would be no point in trying to keep it secret.
1000x this. There’s no reason why proprietary software should exist in this space at all.
I just felt a great disturbance in the bar, as though millions of IP lawyers suddenly cried out in terror and were silenced.
It is an extension of our current political structure.
Our government should be as simple as it reads in the Constitution(s). Instead it has become so pervasive that no one really knows what is going on and a few people that know where they can game it, do it.
Not meaning to pry but how is the insanity progressing? Any relief? That just seems so fucked that I can’t even fathom it.
So far easy as it goes. Until she shows up in person the boys will get through it. They are tough.

Tucker Carlson: NSA is spying on this show
Who knows if it’s true. Nothing will come from this anyways.
NSA offered up a non-denial, denial to it. Glenn G eviscerated them for it for the very reason they sat in front of Congress and straight up lied about their domestic spying.
Whelp, I put in my two weeks the other day. Basically I started at this job last year and absolutely loved the work I was doing and the team. A British company bought us out in October and started implementing many changes and it caused a huge exodus from the finance department and also the VP of Finance was kind of an asshole. Anyway, I was the last Mohicans from Revenue doing the work of three people, training management about our revenue processes, and pulling 12-14 hour days. I asked if they were hiring anyone or if there was a chance that I could even be promoted and they were like…help is on the way we’re still looking at the budget to see if we can have a Senior.
Last week, during a conference call they mentioned that they hired a Senior for Revenue and Inventory a couple of weeks ago and while I had a poker face I was super pissed because I didn’t even know they were looking for a Senior and also pissed that I wasn’t even considered for the role despite for the past 3-4 months I’ve been working like a dog for them.
So I talked to someone I knew at a different company (it’s 15 minutes away from my house while my current job is located in Downtown Chicago) and they were like…yo we have a position open and if you come work with us we’ll give you a 20 percent bump in salary and you’ll be working with a good team. I did the interviews and they all wanted me and gave me a job offer.
I gave my two week notice and an hour or two later the CFO called me and was like…..is there anything we can do to keep you here? I politely declined and he tole me to mull it over. I politely again declined and told him that I’ll guide the team through close and write as many SOP’s as possible.
What’s maddening about all of this was that I would have stayed if they even showed that they appreciated my work and was honest from the get go about the senior position. And I forgot one tidbit. After they mentioned that they hired a new senior they wanted me to train her. It was a giant fuck you .
The best revenge is to live well. Super congratulations on your new gig.
You are entering a fun period. It is always amazing to me how many people come out of the woodwork when you give your notice, to tell you how much they hate it there too and how fucked up things are. An amazing amount of dirt will be spilled about other people who management has fucked over.
Management has fucked over so many people that it’s nuts. One of the people I worked with was a super star. She came in 3 years ago and overhauled the inventory accounting process where we can better and accurately account for inventory. They announced her promotion to manager in a meeting but then a week or two later told her that they are going to delay her promotion for a couple of months. Predictably she left and they were like, “What did we do wrong? We didn’t know you were unhappy here.”
I wouldn’t have been able to refuse rubbing the CFO’s nose in that – you hired someone and wanted me to train her? Tell me, exactly how would YOU respond to that?
Congrats on being a better person than myself and not succumbing to that temptation, and on the new job!
I wanted to so bad but the accounting world in Chicago is small, so I didn’t want to napalm any bridges.
Yeah, there’s no need to do that. The fact that you left is by itself all that they should need. I left a job under similar circumstances many years ago–no need to tell them go GFY; the temporal proximity of my leaving to their actions spoke for itself.
You underestimate the therapeutic value of a major conflagration, one you can look back on with great satisfaction. Granted, you have to be damn careful that you will never need to pass that way again.
the accounting world in Chicago is small
I was with you until this.
Not that there’s not a lot of places you work, but there’s this 6 degrees of separation sort of thing. The VP of Finance at my new job knew one of the managers I worked with at my current job. The new manager my current job just hired knew one of my bosses that I worked for when I got out of college.
Bingo. Works that way in most industries.
The IT world in Minneapolis is the same way.
Pretty easy to destroy your rep by burning bridges on your way out.
So nice for you the way that worked out! Mazel tov! 😀
Congrats.
Glad it worked out!
Congratulations on the new gig!
Never accept a request to “mull over” and change your notice that you are leaving. Never. Reality is that if they truly valued and wanted you there, not just needed you and despised that fact, they would have made sure you had no incentive to leave. Especially today where there are so many new opportunities in a lot of fields. If you change your mind and stay, they will resent that they had to give you a better deal to stay, and you are guaranteed that both the senior leadership and management will take it out on you in the future (kiss good raises & bonuses goodbye for a looong time) while they do their best to make sure they have no dependency on you anymore as soon as possible.
I am speaking from personal experience. I now realize that while it looked like I won, in the end, they will screw you over. Go to the new job and do your thing there.
+1
I’ve seen people get fucked over once they accept their employer’s counter offer. And you are right about being valued. If they really valued me, they would have came to me months ago and be like…what can we do to keep you here?
Never accept a counter offer.
Reading between the lines of what my boss has told me in meetings with him, he sees me as a flight risk that he doesn’t want to lose. I like the guy, but there’s not much he can do about the situation.
Yup. Never take the counter.
Your new commute itself is a 50% bump in compensation. Not much to mull over really.
I’ve seen counter-offers pay off but it is unusual. And they never pay off when ownership and management changes.
Wow! Congrats!!!
Shortened commute is sometimes its own reward.
That’s great news! You of course made the right decision to decline a counter offer–as others have said, and you noted yourself, that often doesn’t work out well.
Congratulations!
Huzzah! Nothing like a quick and easy out from a deteriorating situation.
And with a shorter commute, too!
Congrats man. Hope you enjoy the work at the new company, and the extra free time to spend with the kids.
Congrats. Especially with having young kids, that quick commute will be even better than the pay raise. Nothing like working close to home.
Congratulations, on the shorter commute/more money thing. It’s Ed Wuncler’s time to shine!

SWEET.
One of the few blessings of this pandemic was me being able to see my daughter and wife more. When I was working downtown, I would leave at 7 AM and not be home till 7:30 PM which meant that I maybe got to see my daughter during the week only one hour at best. And I have a second kid due in October so being able to work near home and getting a salary increase sweetened the deal.
Happy for you, Ed! Family time is time that you can never claw back.
That’s all great news. Congratulations.
Congrats on all fronts!
Fann cited the county’s previous audit efforts to push against the county’s decision on Monday that election machines subpoenaed as part of a Republican-led state Senate audit will not be reused in future elections over concerns expressed by officials, including Democratic Secretary of State Katie Hobbs, that their security has been compromised.
A Democrat joining in? Maybe there is something to this audit after all.
In June of 2021, CNN had an average of 580,000 total daily viewers – a drop of 49% compared to June of 2020. The network also lost 59% of its viewers in the critical 25 – 54 age demographic, with an average of 133,000 total day viewers in the demographic for the month of June.
CNN lost the most viewers out of all three major news networks. MSNBC had the second-largest drop in viewership and lost 37% of its total audience compared to June of last year.
HAH-HAH!
Brian Stelter’s book sold 5000 copies in the first week after publication. Ponder that on the tree of “whoa”.
One can only hope that his advance gets clawed back.
I heard that CNN is in a conundrum, cause they know Stelter is a moron and a failure viewershipwise for them, but that letting him go would prove that CNN is a hack entity, so they are stuck trying to prop the idiot up and pretend that he is actually good…
I bet those were ordered by some institution that then gave it away to people that promptly used it to level furniture or roll up joints…
Hopefully sent to some shit-hole country so they can ruffle it up and wipe their bums with it.
concerns expressed by officials, including Democratic Secretary of State Katie Hobbs, that their security has been compromised
I like the tacit admission here that the Secretary of State can’t independently guarantee the security of election machines.
We have a kajillion “smart” devices that network with our systems. We make sure they are secure, with the only exception being the devices where the FDA approves the software, so security upgrades are nonexistent. Those devices have their own segment of our system.
I am TRUMP, Destroyer of Worlds
Unemployment is shrinking. The stock market is booming. Americans are returning to the skies and even to movie theaters. And yet Republicans are deeply worried about the state of the economy.
Even though the US economy is expected to grow this year at the fastest pace in decades, consumer sentiment among self-identified Republicans is worse today than during the height of the pandemic, according to the University of Michigan.
In fact, Republicans are more pessimistic than at any point since September 2010, when the economy was just beginning to dig out of the Great Recession.
Meanwhile, consumer sentiment among self-identified Democrats is higher than at any point during the presidency of Donald Trump — even though unemployment was far lower then than it is today.
This polarization of consumer sentiment across party lines is not entirely new, but it got significantly worse during the Trump era and continues to this day.
“It didn’t really matter who was elected, until Trump,” said Richard Curtin, who leads the University of Michigan’s closely-watched consumer sentiment surveys.
He upended reality, itself!
psssst- nominal GDP inflation not same as growing economy
Whenever some nobody says “Trump Era” you should just give up the article and go watch porn.
Too late, you’re already into porn – just the really freaky shit.
Especially when they measure one group in a different period of time to be able to make their point.
Inflation does not exist, cannot exist in our democracy, which has been restored by brave democrats.
Allow me to speculate that people living high off inflated unemployment trend Democrat, and people with regular jobs that mostly took a real hit last year and may or may not have recovered to what they were making in the Before Times trend Republican.

Totally not political.
Trump hires assholes that don’t know how to do write-offs.
Trump is not a good judge of character and/or employees.
He’s not sending us his best.
I tell you that if this is all they could find after going with a fine toothcomb of a Manhattan/NYC construction company looking for anything to charge these people with so they could create the illusion of criminal behavior, then this tells me that Trump ran one heck of an aboveboard company. Construction in NYC is notorious for being crooked and linked to the mob and corrupt politics. The only thing I can think of is that some real prominent democrats would then also have been exposed as crooks (remember that that’s the circle Trump used to be in before he became their most hated foe) if charges were brought on other things, so they ignored those. That or Trump is too clean for them to fling shit and have it stick….
They know. The very best they can do is a gotcha on a rule interpretation. It will be tax attorneys and accountants arguing technicalities.
And it will be political. Rule interpretation and violation typically results in fines and that is it. I suspect we will read something like “due to the grave….blag blah….we will prosecute to the fullest extent of the law”
Not clicking. But isn’t payment of taxes the employees responsibility?
Walls closing in! Of fucking course.

“Moment MMA fighter Joe Schilling knocks out man he says used a racial slur in a Fort Lauderdale bar before claiming he was acting in self-defense and feared for his life
MMA fighter Joe Schilling shared a video of himself knocking a drinker out at a bar – and later blamed the man for using a racial slur and threatening his life.
The shocking video, initially shared by Schilling on Instagram, showed the other man – named as Justin Balboa, 31 – wearing a dress shirt and tie at a bar in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, before Schilling bumps into him and pushes past.
Balboa, a busboy at a local Outback steakhouse, then shouts something to get Schilling’s attention during the encounter, which is believed to have taken place Sunday.
When the mixed martial artist turns around, Balboa appears to flex at him and says something that cannot be heard on camera.
Schilling, who is 6’5 tall and weighs around 270 pounds, immediately responds by punching Balboa in the face twice before the man collapses to the floor of the bar, as other patrons screamed with shock.”

So just when I’m making a commitment to getting my pudgy ass back in the gym – my gym closes. Covid, of course. Fuck.
At least they’re transferring my membership to another more out-of-the-way gym that may or may not have any decent barbell training facilities.
I read your comment and decided to check the rates at a local gym. And that’s what I saw on their front page:
WE’RE WEARING MASKS AND TAKING TEMPERATURES TO MAKE YOU FEEL SAFE AT BSC.
I’m not sure if they forgot to update the website. I’m tempted to stop by in person and mock them if they still require masks.
Yeah, I need to check that bullshit at the new place, too.
Or maybe I should just install a power rack in my living room. Fuck it, I never have guests over anyway…
Mrs. Dean installed one in our garage. We have a pretty decent home gym there now, built up during the closures and nonsense of the pandemic.

But as Democrats prepare that panel, both parties are still unsure about which Republicans, if any, will serve on its 13-member roster — a decision that will dramatically shape the direction of the investigation.
Speaker Nancy Pelosi will have the final say over the panel’s GOP members, assuming House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy appoints them at all. But many in her caucus are still anxious about the prospect of Republicans starting another bitter fight by trying to appoint members who voted against certifying President Joe Biden’s win on Jan. 6.
Even worse, in their minds, would be GOP riot investigators who some Democrats view as having abetted the attack.
Uh huh.
How can we have a truly effective kangaroo court if the wrong kangaroos get on it?
The worst attack! I’d argue the leftist bombings that occured in 1983 and 1980 were far worse than a bunch of dumb yokels roaming around.
Or the PR nationalists shooting up the House gallery…
Paywalled and wow, WaPo even found a way to defeat my browser’s Reader functionality. They must be absolutely desperate for revenue.
I haven’t knowingly clicked a WaPo link in ages.

I need to find $100k somewhere. Sadly I’d rather eat and have roof over my head.
26k-Mile 1997 Porsche 911 Carrera Coupe 6-Speed
The last of the “analog” Porsches. No need for the added complexity and cost of the turbo. This example looks to be well cared for.
You could take up scuba diving
Looks very clean. Not my favorite paint color, but I could live with it. I bet that thing is a blast to drive.
Funny, I’d prefer a different interior. But similarly, I could live with it as well.
The 911 is gorgeous, but PLA Jeep!!! https://bringatrailer.com/listing/1986-jeep-beijing/
Sadly I’d rather eat and have roof over my head.
Food and shelter are for the weak. DO IT!
I don’t really want one.
But as analog Porsches go… these are pretty cool.
Singers are amazing. But you may as well just empty your bank account and light the cash on fire.
What do they get for those?
Per Wiki
Plus the car on the bottom end!
I’d have to set the whole bank on fire, then.
This one was $670K!
Cool, but, c’mon!
Plus I don’t see the need for AWD. Great car though.
The first time I saw a photo of a Singer, I thought, “Huh. That’s kind of cool. Somebody put ’66 bumpers and turn signals on a 930.”
There’s a little more to it than that.
