IFLA: The “Coming Up for Air” Edition of the Horoscope for the week of August 8

by | Aug 8, 2021 | IFLA | 118 comments

I’ll be back soon.Β  Very busy.

I’m ready for my closeup, Mr. DeMille!

The planets are unaligned this week.

This is why I let her on the furniture

Leo and Virgo remain large and in charge tis week.Β  With Virgo, it’s a “can do no wrong” sort of situation, whereas with Leo, it’s more of an “unbelievable luck” thing.Β  So Leos should buy one (1) lottery ticket this week.Β  If you buy a bunch, it looks like you’re trying to game the system, and Luck does not like a smartass.

Domestic. Tranquility.

Leo: Queen of Wands –Β  A dark woman, countrywoman, friendly, chaste, loving, honorable, love of money, or a certain success in business.Β  This card needs more explanation, but no time for that now.

Virgo:Β  9 of Swords –Β  Death, failure, miscarriage, delay, deception, disappointment, despair.Β  But at least it’s not The Tower.

Libra:Β  The World reversed – Inertia, fixity, stagnation, permanence.

Scorpio:Β  9 of Wands reversed – Obstacles, adversity, calamity.

Sagittarius:Β  9 of Cups – Concord, contentment, physicalΒ bien-Γͺtre, victory, success, advantage, satisfaction

Capricorn:Β  6 of Wands – Triumph, great news, expectation, hope.Β  We seem to draw this card way too often for a site specializing in bad news.

Aquarius:Β  Ace of Wands – Creation, invention, enterprise, principle, beginning, source, birth, family, origin.

Pisces: Knight of Coins – Utility, serviceableness, interest, responsibility, rectitude

Aries:Β  2 of Cups reversed – The ending of a partnership, poisons, drugs that fail to work

Taurus:Β  2 of Coins – Gaiety, recreation, news and messages in writing, obstacles, agitation, trouble, embroilment.

Gemini:Β  The Devil reversed – Evil, weakness, pettiness, blindness.

Cancer:Β  2 of Swords reversed – Imposture, falsehood, duplicity, disloyalty, misdirected revenge

“Virgo: 9 of Swords – Death, failure, miscarriage, delay, deception, disappointment, despair. But at least it’s not The Tower.”
Jeez, does it get any worse? Cause I don’t need worse right now.

    • waffles

Same fellow Virgo. Last week was so promising but this!? Feck.

Alternatively I can stop blaming things on circumstances I don’t control and instead just handle what I can.

  3. Mojeaux

I do not want to be embroiled. I don’t want to be embaked or emboiled, either.

    • Don Escaped Texas

      I love the ancient tenses

      embroil from the French

bemoan (Old English, so who knows where it really comes from)

Vikings who speak French can really mess things up

      • Mojeaux

I was thinking about a book idea with magic and all that Latin or whatever mumbo jumbo, then it occurred to me. English is the most magical language ever. Biggest vocabulary==precision and nuance you can’t get anywhere else. You can make the same phrases say entirely different things.

I didn’t say he stole the money.
I DIDN’T say he stole the money.
I didn’t SAY he stole the money.
I didn’t say HE stole the money.
I didn’t say he STOLE the money.
I didn’t say he stole THE money.
I didn’t say he stole the MONEY.

Where is HM? Can other languages do this?

      • Don Escaped Texas

        all tonal languages do that?

I generally have three choices with friends, families, and colleages: Latin, German, but let’s set aside Gaelic for now.

So the same conversation goes different ways depending.
        German: have/get, sweat, land, ***
        Spanish/French: obtain, perspire, territory, beaucoup/much
        Irish: ***, ***, ***, galore
I can’t think of any reason not to use the easier word for the listener.

      • Sensei

Pitch not tone. Tone in linguistics sense changes meaning entirely. Chinese, for example.

I can do what Mojeaux suggests in Japanese, but I’m not fluent enough to know if it is as flexible here as English.

Similar to English it’s done with pitch.

      • Don Escaped Texas

“Tone in linguistics sense changes meaning entirely.”

of course/if I’d thought about it a minute I’d realized it wasn’t a good fit

      • blackjack

Dunno any of that, but I do know the Irish were lying.

  4. PieInTheSky

Cancer: 2 of Swords reversed – Imposture, falsehood, duplicity, disloyalty, misdirected revenge – wait the guy I ran over in my car was not in fact my nemesis? huh…

  5. Tundra

I really look forward to the doggie pics.

Leo: Queen of Wands – A dark woman, countrywoman, friendly, chaste, loving, honorable, love of money, or a certain success in business. This card needs more explanation, but no time for that now.

    Sounds good to me!

  6. DEG

    Nice pictures.

Leo, it’s more of an β€œunbelievable luck” thing.

    Bad luck is luck.

That one would be the first in the story, then my posts, it always starts with a Magic Moment,

Triumph, great news, expectation, hope. We seem to draw this card way too often for a site specializing in bad news.

I ain’t buying it, but I will take it. Those four things are all from the before times.

  8. limey

    serviceableness

    I must find a Pisces.

  9. Sensei

OT – Welcome to NY’s new bail policies.

Accused NYC bank robber hits two more following no-bail release

NY and specifically NYC were locking up lots of poor and homeless and essentially punishing them for being poor or not knowing how the bail process works. So rather than fix the abuses of the police and prosecutors the “solution” is no bail.

    • Akira

      Fucking insanity.

I really wonder if NYC is going to go the way of Detroit. I know they have several business sectors that are pretty well dug in there… But between lax-on-crime policies, COVID insanity, and ridiculous taxes, you have to imagine that a lot of businesses are considering greener pastures.

      • DEG

I think many big cities are going the way of Detroit for the reasons you cite. Philly. Minneapolis. Others.

      • Q Continuum

Detroit was the auto industry for basically the whole world and they managed to fuck that up.

      • Don Escaped Texas

        true

but it would be impossible not to fuck that up
we bombed all their competition out of existence, but that wasn’t going to last

I’m a second law kind of guy: expect change, expect entropy
corollary: sell high and get out of town

guys who refuse to sell or go public always confuse me: cash that check and get out of town!

      • Chafed

If one money center bank leaves then NYC will be mortally wounded. Because if even one leaves then more are sure to follow.

      • rhywun

I really wonder if NYC is going to go the way of Detroit.

Nah. It didn’t happen last time and I don’t think it will this time. People are already fed-up and NYC still has a thriving middle-class that is showing signs of pushing back. All they have do is show it at the voting booth, LOL.

  10. Grumbletarian

Scorpio: 9 of Wands reversed – Obstacles, adversity, calamity.

So I applied for a management position where I work and have unofficially gotten it, according to a couple of the people who conducted my interview. But I haven’t actually received an official offer. The quarter ended this past month and the guy who was going to make the final decision told me during the interview not to expect an official answer until around then. I work in semiconductors so as you can imagine the company has been busy to a level nobody anticipated. Still, starting to really wonder now…

    • Tonio

Sometimes the hold up is HR, like the person who does the paperwork is on vacay. Could that be the case here?

      • Grumbletarian

Not sure. I’ll probably send an inquiring email about it at the end of this week if I still haven’t heard an official yes/no.

  11. Scruffy Nerfherder

    Capricorn

*not sure if serious, eyes warily *

    • blackjack

      Inorite?

    • blackjack

Did her ship come in? Or did it pull out?

      • Q Continuum

Didn’t sound like he was entering dry dock.

      • Q Continuum

        Somebody got his keel wet.

    • Chafed

Apparently she didn’t and, if the accusations are true, he is a nut.

    • Toxteth O'Grady

Someone here (I think) suggested he was a patsy.

    • blackjack

      Son, how do you plead?

  12. The Late P Brooks

Sagittarius: 9 of Cups – Concord, contentment, physical bien-Γͺtre, victory, success, advantage, satisfaction

    Don’t tease me, Bro.

    • rhywun

It sounds like their authoritarianism is a bit more extreme than ours at this point but still… WTF, Americans?

      • Toxteth O'Grady

“To arms, cit-izens! Let’s march, let’s march!” ? See, it works.

    • Yusef drives a Kia

I can relocate, where you at?

      • Sean

We’re about 45 minutes North of Philly.

We can chat post surgery, if you’d like.

      • Yusef drives a Kia

Keep me posted, that’s not too far away for relocation purposes,

    • LJW

A relative of mine recently reached out to me about a job his buddy is hiring. I have 0 experience in the field but have a few skills that could be transferable. Job is almost double my current pay. I suspect they’re having trouble finding people.

    • rhywun

Obviously you’re not paying enough. Do better.

      • Sean

The biggest benefit they get is me being their boss. You can’t put a dollar amount on that. ?

      • UnCivilServant

In that case – I’m going to need an additional 25% πŸ˜›

    • Akira

Obviously, employers can’t find workers because so many people have dropped dead from COVID! Just like in the Black Plague!

/sarcastic, but probably exactly what someone somewhere has said

      • Sean

        Traffic levels don’t reflect that.

  13. The Late P Brooks

    Triumph, great news, expectation, hope.

    Like this Triumph?

    I’d take it.

    • Mojeaux

I drove a Triumph once, with all the controls swapped sides. Damn near killed myself.

      • blackjack

Mr. “Arabia” rode a Brough Superior SS100, which was a serious world beating superbike at the time. Apparently, it beat him too.

      • Toxteth O'Grady

Excuse my ignoraminity. Just being facetious.

      • blackjack

Excuse my pedantry, I’m a motorcycle nut.

      • blackjack

Although, I can assure you that Larry himself would have taken offense if it were insinuated that he were riding a lowly Triumph.

      • Toxteth O'Grady

        ? Suitably chastened.

My entire motorcycle experience is one brief pillion session on a BMW in the Hollywood Hills. But I do my best to look out for you lunatics. πŸ˜‰

      • Mojeaux

Yayaaaaaaaasssssssss, and on my wedding anniversary too!

      • UnCivilServant

You were married on the release date of Labrynth?

      • Mojeaux

        Better. Friday the 13th.

  14. Brochettaward

I just learned that Kentaro Miura passed away in May. I get to experience what it is like to follow a story for the better part of two decades and never get an ending out of it.

I know almost none of you will know who the fuck up I’m talking about.

    • Yusef drives a Kia

If you weren’t a jerk people might care, I have seen you in a choherent state before, be that guy.

    • blackjack

      What dudes?

    • Ghostpatzer

Yes! A staple of the house band at D’Jais in Belmar NJ in the ’70s. With background vocals provided by a couple hundred yutes drunk on Schaefer “beer”.

  15. Draw Me Like One of Your Tulpae, Jack

The ending of a partnership, poisons, drugs that fail to work

Does this have something to do with the Ivermectin that I just got?

    • blackjack

If you grind it up and snort it, it’ll work faster. I heard.

  16. The Late P Brooks

This is why I let her on the furniture

Because she’d be up there anyway?

    • Yusef drives a Kia

      oh yeah, 226,000,000 views, Raaacist!

      • The Hyperbole

There is an entire genre of “black people react to” videos on YouTube, If done well it can be entertaining also there is a lot of ‘cringe’ as the kids say. Of the ones I’ve seen on “Black Betty” they all love it, not a single one complains or throws out the racists card. I think people over play the “it couldn’t be made today card” It’s a good example of how “narratives” aren’t just for libtards.

    • rhywun

Because nobody can make more ? and at greater expense and danger to everyone involved. Bang up job, boys.

      • Yusef drives a Kia

I’m down with do what you want, but meth is just bad news, for everyone around it, A self induced scourge on Humanity,
        /I know

      • Yusef drives a Kia

I think this will make a good post, I have a lifetime of experience, well kind of,
        Misadventures in Meth, coming soon,

      • blackjack

You gonna stay up all night writing it?

      • Yusef drives a Kia

I already have about 800 words, pretty good for me, and it’s only ’96
        more before I’m done,

      • rhywun

I know, too – but what this country (and many others) is doing to combat that is ass-backwards and guaranteed to fail.

      • blackjack

There’s a substance and the effect it has depends on how much, how long , how high of quality, your personal condition and a host of other things, there’s no means of combatting such a thing. If it spins someone out of control and they cause damage to another, prosecute that. Otherwise, just leave them alone, until they realize, like even the hippies of the 60’s did, that speed kills.

      • rhywun

Well, by “combat that” I had in mind things like encouraging conditions that don’t lead so many people into that lifestyle. Mostly it just means let the economy flourish but we don’t seem willing to do that any more. In fact we are doing the exact opposite.

      • Yusef drives a Kia

        I’m down with this Rhy,

  17. Trigger Hippie

    Domestic. Tranquility.

The main reason humans attained such a close affinity for dogs is mostly based on our ability to genetically engineer their desire to be pleased by us, thus pleasing ourselves. Despite basically being 98% the same species, a wolf will rip your throat out at the first opportunity when it feels a hunger pain or hears one from it’s cubs…a well cared for dog will die trying to defend you from the wolf.

Which ties into my first point. Domesticated dogs will love and be loyal to you as long as you show them that they belong in your pack. The least you can do is try to make them feel welcome in it. It ain’t that hard. Don’t be a dick to your dog…and I say that as a person who doesn’t particularly like them. I find the unwavering loyalty, constant attention and desire to please off-putting.
