I have it on good authority it’s because small businesses aren’t paying a living wage.

The only moral thing to do is destroy small business altogether and transfer all jobs to multinational corporations in partnership with corrupt governments…

Always wanted to see that cyberpunk dystopia I was promised was just around the corner during the 80’s.

      • Gadfly

        You’ve got it all wrong.

Once the jobs are transferred to multinational corporations in partnership with corrupt governments, you must also unionize the workforce so that you can have a third big, uncaring entity involved.

I’m hearing rumors of massive signing bonuses in many fields. 50% of salary or more.

Should unemployment welfare pay more than your typical job? Those familiar with the basic economics of how incentives work would say no.

I have it on good authority that those are shitty jobs. The company just needs to pay more.

The threat of a new pandemic will never subside. But the notion that we need to ‘trade liberty for security’ is misguided and dangerous. Public health concerns cannot be addressed with law enforcement or national security tools. If we allow the fear associated with a potential outbreak to justify the suspension of liberties in the name of public health, we risk not only undermining our fundamental rights, but alienating the very communities and individuals that are in need of help and thereby fomenting the spread of disease.

Who is this dangerous, right-wing extremist?

One of the authors of that piece appears to have successfully completed her reeducation. Wendy E. Parmet, in The Atlantic:

      https://www.theatlantic.com/ideas/archive/2021/09/legal-cases-covid-19-era/619914/

The most interesting cases to date, however, have been brought on behalf of children with disabilities who claim that the anti-mask measures violate federal laws prohibiting discrimination against people with disabilities. The theory is that by failing to allow schools to take reasonable steps such as mandating masks to make schools safe for children who are at high risk of complications from COVID-19, the states have violated studentsā€™ civil rights. The Biden administration appears to endorse this view. Recently, the Department of Education has begun an investigation into whether laws restricting mask mandates in schools in Iowa, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Tennessee, and Utah violate the rights of students with disabilities.

By focusing on studentsā€™ rights to be safe at school, this new round of litigation seeks a very different type of freedom than plaintiffs sought in the earlier round. Now, instead of demanding the freedom from health measures, plaintiffs are seeking the freedom that, in a pandemic, only health measures can provide.

These new cases offer the courts an important opportunity to correct the simplistic view of freedom evident in the initial round of litigation. Still, in a well-functioning polity, we would not need litigation to ensure that children can remain healthy at school. Public-health measures would be less contentious and less often litigated. Although courts have a crucial role to play, especially in protecting the rights of the most vulnerable individuals, judges generally lack training or experience in public health. They are not well equipped to make public-health policy, which is what they have been doing, far too frequently, throughout the pandemic.

Yesterday’s “law enforcement and national security measures” are today’s “public-health policy”. Quite the transformation.

      • Gadfly

The theory is that by failing to allow schools to take reasonable steps such as mandating masks to make schools safe for children who are at high risk of complications from COVID-19, the states have violated studentsā€™ civil rights.

Mask mandates are not reasonable and do not make schools safe for children. If anything, the false security of mask mandates makes schools more dangerous for high-risk children, by acting as a substition for actual effective action.

Colored people People of color hardest hit.

An abortion fund that helps hundreds of women in the southernmost region of Texas each year has stopped answering its hotline after one of the strictest bans in the nation went into effect this week.

“Our very existence is a risk. The fact that we exist as an organization puts us at risk (of civil lawsuits),” said Zeana Zamora, executive director of Frontera Fund. The group helps people in the Rio Grande Valley — an impoverished region that is mostly Mexican American — access abortion care. …

Thomas Saenz, president and general counsel of the Mexican American Legal Defense and Educational Fund, said it’s clear that the state is in a demographic transition, just as California, New Mexico and Arizona have been before. It’s making people in power feel threatened, and the new measures are a negative response to the demographic change, he says. …

For Greisa Martinez Rosas, executive director of United We Dream, the abortion law and voter restriction bills mirror conservatives’ policies and stances on immigration.

“What is happening in Texas is a deliberate attack by far-right politicians who will do anything to quell Black, brown, immigrant, and LGBTQ communities both in Texas and other Republican-controlled states across the country,” Martinez Rosas said.

By merely existing, “Republicans see us as threats to their white supremacist agenda.”

The “white-supremacist agenda” centered around ensuring that your vote counts and more minority babies are not killed…

    • JaimeRoberto (shama/lama/ding dong)

Let me make sure I understand this. White people feel threatened and therefore pass laws that will likely lead to more non-whites being born? Am I getting this right?

Greetings, Glibs. Man, am I fucking tired.
Long week of day job as COO of a startup and “hobby” of fighting the vax mandate for military.
Some tidbits I though that might interest you:
1 – ~700K military members have NOT gotten the vax. Around 1.1MM have gotten at least one shot.
2 – I got an email that said 27 Air Force pilots in one squadron resigned when ordered to take it. This is similar to what happened with anthrax. The reason is that for pilots, your future career as an airline pilot depends on being able to pass a Class 3 medical (or whatever it’s called now). I would also add that being a military pilot means being able to consume vast quantities of incredibly detailed info in short time spans. These folks are not fooled when they start digging. In fact, it only gets worse.
3 – I got an email that 600 sailors on one ship refused the jab order by the skipper. So now they’re all expected at sea Article 15, which they can’t refuse while at sea. 600?? That’s a fucking mutiny waiting to happen.
4 – Judge in CO denied emergency ex parte TRO – unsurprising really. Was always a longshot, but case goes forward. Air Force Academy Commandant backed down after reading motions and info that’s leaking out. No punishment for cadets who refuse.
5 – The Navy is trying to compel a female officer who is 8.5 months pregnant to take vax. Insanity.
6 – Finally – the vast majority of military folks reaching out to me against this are WOMEN. The men are sheep. My explanation? Mil women see life outside of the military; it’s not their whole identity, particularly since many of them are healthy and fit and want kids. I’m starting to dole out the deluge of calls and requests to my old MilJus colleagues who do CMs for a living. The Navy has created a consolidated disposition authority (CDA) to handle all refusal cases and courts because the jury needs alone could crush individual commands. 14 people who all demand court-martial (as an example) could shut down a unit.

23rd of fucking August. But yea, they didn’t want to leave so we just cut the ties that bind and say bye!

  22. Count Potato

Does anyone know of a good site that reviews TV that isn’t a front for Amazon or some big box store?

    • The coolest vaccine-free BEAM in the worldā„¢

      No.
      And I’ve been looking.ā€‚ā€‚:-/

    • Ownbestenemy

Thinking some random youtuber might be your best bet. Written reviews? Probably none.

    • Count Potato

Oh, I meant televisions, not TV shows, sorry left off an “‘s” there.

    • Toxteth O'Grady

Make sure they review the remote, esp. if you like the sleep timer.

  23. TARDis

ā€œIf you lose, however, you must post on your social media account that you lost to a dentist at Zen Family Dental in Massachusetts.ā€

I would be happy to have my butt kicked by my dentist.

    • Hyperion

      Feed me Seymour?

    • B.P.

Looks like that “white rage” that Gen. Milley is so concerned about.

    • Gustave Lytton

I’d be surprised it was without approval. 82d CG was on the ground at Kabul.

      • Ownbestenemy

My ignorance…just what was on the ground did it…absent Washington’s policy

      • Gustave Lytton

The same brainiacs that couldn’t see this coming and didn’t have a good evacuation plan wouldn’t have had a equipment destruction appendix to their non existent plan? No way!

      • Ownbestenemy

Huh…I thought every contingency and this was all planned for was what was communicated towards us. The fact that the media brushes this all aside is enough to make heads explode.

  24. Gadfly

ā€œMost recently, Ghost of Tsushima Directorā€™s Cut launched with a paid upgrade path from PS4 to PS5, and so will Death Stranding: Directorā€™s Cut when that launches this November.ā€

Ghost of Tsushima was a great game.

ā€œIf you lose, however, you must post on your social media account that you lost to a dentist at Zen Family Dental in Massachusetts.ā€

LOL. I approve. But I would not accept the challenge, as I’m not good at Smash. After realizing this when playing with friends in college, my go to was to choose the most annoying characters and spam the most annoying attacks, hoping to win by attrition rather than skill.

Everyone deserves somebody to love, I guess.

Somebody, yes, but I draw the line at something. That guy needs therapy.

      Pikaaaaa! Pikaaaaa! Pikaaaaa!

      • Ownbestenemy

I think this would have been better three times over.

      • Gadfly

I see you have either used or been afflicted with the same strategy. Pikachu and Ness were my primary character choices.

      You and your ammo privilege.

I’m still shooting 9mm from Obama’s first term.

      • Sean

        I do not have a basement. ?

      • DEG

I am trying to build up a swimming vault of ammunition like Scrooge McDuck’s vault of gold coins.

  26. Draw Me Like One of Your Tulpae, Jack

Today is the 30th anniversary of the founding of the Institute for Justice

    • Ghostpatzer

Nice. On Monday I shall celebrate this in place of the official holiday.

Ghost and I are the only Real Libertarians here.

      • Ownbestenemy

Im a Fed which makes me ineligible to the club. Which…makes me more libertarian than you

    • MikeS

Well that’s cool. Today is my wedding anniversary.

And Mike. Mike is also a Real Libertarian

And on the anniversary of IJ’s founding. That is auspicious.

    Wokesters, whatup?

    • DEG

That’s sad. I like Free Will.

The first time I was there was after a funeral. My relatives and I wanted to get our minds off of what happened. Some of those relatives had planned ahead and had a change of clothes. I didn’t and was there in my shirt, tie, jacket. I ditched the jacket and tie after a beer or two.

      It was a good night.

The place is a good place. I haven’t been there in quite a while.

The Proper in Quakertown had only some water in the basement which they were able to take care of. They opened late the day after the storm.

    • Ownbestenemy

*raised eyebrow* I am sure I have seen this before…

      • Gustave Lytton

Apologies, I have a drug problem.

Tests confirm New Hampshire Governor Chris Sununu had bleeding ulcer

Tests confirmed Friday that a bleeding ulcer was the cause of New Hampshire Gov. Chris Sununuā€™s flulike symptoms, his chief of staff said.

Sununu was admitted to a hospital earlier in the day after having flulike symptoms since Wednesday. He had tested negative three times for COVID-19.

ā€œTests have confirmed that a bleeding ulcer caused the symptoms the Governor has been experiencing this week,ā€ Chief of Staff Jayne Millerick said in a statement. ā€œAfter blood transfusion today, he is doing much better. He is extremely grateful to the staff at Portsmouth Hospital for their outstanding care and to everyone who donates blood. As a blood donor himself, he is happy he paid it forward and grateful to all who do the same.ā€

    • Ownbestenemy

And how many ‘cases’ are like that? Oh the medical industry is just equating any fever or ‘flulike’ symptoms as COVID is a conspiracy? A pox on your house!

    • Mojeaux

Huh. My bleeding ulcer gave me female-having-a-heart-attack symptoms. Nausea, dizziness, shortness of breath. The bleeding was the ulcer tell. The cardiac techs had me strapped to an EKG almost as soon as I walked in the door.

    • Ownbestenemy

Gonna chalk that us to normal trypanophobia

      • The Hyperbole

        Don’t harsh the outrage, dude.

  29. TARDis

Since this is technically a Riven nerd post, I have to ask if there were enough people for some Left4Dead action? Killing zombies with a team would do wonders for my stress.

    • Ownbestenemy

When? I need to help with family business, take kid to airport but will be home around 7pm PST?

      • TARDis

I have an early morning tomorrow so I don’t want to get gaming at 10PM. What is your Steam ID? I’ll send you a request. Has anyone else expressed interest?

      • Ownbestenemy

        my handle here

Should be able to find others…I thought a couple did show interest last time you asked.

      • TARDis

My ID consists of barley, hops, and yeast.

    • Lord Humungus

I know I suggested it… but then I got distracted… by, you know, things.

  30. trshmnstr the terrible

I’m a bit pessimistic on the election fraud stuff right now (not that it happened, but that anything will come of it), but I’m hearing rumors of video from GA showing hundreds of people dropping backpack loads of ballots to “an average of 24 dropboxes each”.

I’ll obviously withhold judgment until the actual evidence is produced, but that would pretty much confirm my suspicions regarding one of the fraud vectors that I’ve heard rumblings about for over a decade. Now, if only the AZ fraud report would drop…

    • Ownbestenemy

Same. There are no court cases (that I know of..) show the video to the world!

      • trshmnstr the terrible

        *does some math*

Let’s say they overstated it and there are only 200 people, and they overstated the number of boxes and it was only 20 each, and that there were only 20 ballots per dropbox…. That would be 80,000 votes illegally harvested.

    • The Hyperbole

It’s never going to drop, once it does the grift is over, who ends a perfectly good grift?

  31. Hyperion

Look, we had to elect Biden. Don’t y’all feel so good that there are no more mean tweets? You sleeping so good?

    • Toxteth O'Grady

Current events? Am I supposed to pay attention to that?

I thought the deal was that I have a civic duty to vote, and that nice people vote Democrat.

      Who’s We Kemosabe?

      • Hyperion

Of course you are. Some of us just do not give a fuck about Constitutional law.

    • Gender Traitor

You need to keep your eyes out for some classic Ohio Players albums (#HometownHeroes!) though maaaaybe not at the Salvation Army store…

      • Tundra

        Oh, yeah.

        Funky and fantastic!

      • MikeS

No East Bound and Down. I am disappoint.

      • The Hyperbole

        That’s some solid trucker music.

      • MikeS

It is. Girl on the Billboard might be my favorite of the bunch. Maybe Six Days on the Road.

      • The Hyperbole

Those are the exact two I googled and listened to. Highway Junkie would be a good addition and Semi Crazy

    • Tundra

      Better wear a rubber, dude.

  32. hayeksplosives

Ok peeps. Iā€™m in the work parking lot about it embark on the Friday afternoon 3 day weekend rush hour.

Got Fastball playing on the radio and sunglasses on.

If I donā€™t report in by midnight, send out a search party.

If you’re not home by 10, you’re grounded, young lady! Don’t use holiday traffic as your excuse.

Unemployment Benefits That Pay More than Work

Ok, I am going to say something maybe controversial but who is the dumb ass in this situation. Those of us who keep working or the slack asses who got fired and get paid more for doing nothing. My goal is to be a slack ass and get free money.

    • rhywun

And with Dr. Work demanding injections that goal can be real for much of America!

      • westernsloper

        Ya, me too.

    • kinnath

The rational actor takes the free money. Maybe even work some job under the table for awhile.

The dumbshits in this case are people giving out the free money.
