I miss “Woke Charmed” and “Secret Nazi President”.

Actually one of the reasons I’m a fan of the new Stargirl show (in its Second season). It’s set in amorphous time (paper routes, classic cars, diners, with the internet and cell phones), has a group of teenage characters who are becoming legacy superheroes, and embraces some of the true silver age strangeness. The teenage characters make believable dumb mistakes, and actually make an attempt to learn from them.

FFS, it’s a show with AI goggles, a magic/tech sentient staff, a car that transforms into a giant robot, a bad guy who’s power is that he’s really good with athletic equipment, and Solomon Grundy (a giant zombie).

      • SDF-7

I really need to sit down and watch that. I enjoyed the character back when she was first introduced / in Johns’s JSA and bought the first season… just haven’t watched it.

Dehring will serve four days in the Gallatin County Detention Center and will pay slightly more than $1,000 in fines, plus another $1,000 to the Yellowstone Forever wildlife protection fund.

Yeah, I hate it when the courts force people to fund groups like this.

    • The Hyperbole

There shouldn’t be monetary penalties for crimes against the state, the cost to punish someone should be borne solely by the people that think someone needs to be punished. This included speeding tickets and the like, no $100 fines, if speeding, running a red light, not wearing a seatbelt, etc… is wrong then a night in the pokey or some required safety classes or some such things should be the only allowable punishment.

Reposting from the tail end of the dead thread.

You can almost hear the “journalist” tsk-tsking in the background.

    https://www.cnbc.com/2021/09/29/elon-musk-takes-shots-at-biden-sec-anti-nuclear-sentiment-at-code.html

SpaceX and Tesla CEO Elon Musk criticized President Joe Biden on Tuesday, deeming his administration “biased” against Tesla and saying it appears to be “controlled” by unions during a speech on stage at the Code Conference in Beverly Hills, California.
    .
Musk sighed. “You know, Biden held this EV summit — didn’t invite Tesla. Invited GM, Ford, Chrysler and UAW. An EV summit on the White House! Didn’t mention Tesla once, and praised GM and Ford for leading the EV revolution.”

“Does this sound maybe a little biased or something? And you know, just — it’s not the friendliest administration. Seems to be controlled by unions, as far as I can tell.”

Then of course they judge him because he didn’t have taxable income last year (no salary). Never mind the incredible amount of wealth he’s created or the innovations he’s spurred on (including those of his competitors); he didn’t pay his FAIR SHARE!!!

    Muh tax money!

    • SDF-7

I know he’s done his share of grifting from government (and the Solar City deal was wacky)… but damned if I don’t want him to succeed in getting to Mars and flipping off the power structure here.

      • Ownbestenemy

Hate the game, not the player seems apt. We all would love to see a self-made person build up what he has without having to do the things that he needs to in order to remain viable in the face of regulations, laws, politicians with hands out, etc.

Any one of the big billionaires though is a perfect candidate for a Galt figure to emerge, but that sweet slop at the government trough is just to alluring.

      • Scruffy Nerfherder

I get the impression he did what he had to in order to achieve his goals.

      • Sensei

I respect the heck out of Musk, but he is a Steve Jobs (who I also respect) level of self absorbed asshole and focused directly on his own best interests.

For a rather poorly written, but informative nonetheless book I’d suggest:

Power Play: Tesla, Elon Musk, and the Bet of the Century

The amount of people he has screwed over while creating SpaceX and Tesla is not insignificant.

    • Yusef drives a Kia

Elon is the guy I read about growing up, Privateers!

    • hayeksplosives

      Same article, further down:

“Walk us through when you decide to do a tweet,” she said.

Musk replied to Swisher in a sarcastic tone.

“Well, I think about it for hours. And I consult with my strategy team,” he said, laughing with the audience. “Or maybe I’m wasted and then I brrrr—psshht! Gone! Let me shoot myself in the foot, bam! Now let me shoot myself in the foot, bam! That describes some of my tweets.”

      • Ownbestenemy

Come on…he needs to hang out on one of our Zooms.

      • Animal

Well, the ‘wasted’ part certainly fits in well.

      • Ownbestenemy

Maybe because I don’t have these grand projects or FU money, but right now, if I was in his shoes I would be hoping into these little corners of the internet just to have fun. Kinda like Bill Murrey showing up to random parties because someone found his secret voicemail box and asked him to.

If the government wants to tax billionaires, they probably should close the loan loophole.

Must be a reason why they don’t do that.

      • R C Dean

You mean, start treating loans as income?

What about when you take out a mortgage or a car loan? Put something on your credit card? Buy something on installments?

        Debt is not income.

    • Scruffy Nerfherder

      Yes

    • Ownbestenemy

      Huh.

Nagase said that he gave his elderly patients one dose of Ivermectin, along with antibiotics, vitamins, and inhalers—which set two out of the three on a quick road to recovery. But when health authorities caught wind of what he was doing, all the medications, including the inhalers were taken away, and Nagase was relieved of his duties.

      • Drake

        Obedience and/or death.

      • Ownbestenemy

You can drop the “or” in this. Death is a forgone conclusion its just a matter of how we arrive at it.

      • Ownbestenemy

Its almost as if the medical profession has been told “you will only do what we say” by both pharma and government. All those years of training, all those calls to find creative ways to treat your patients, all those hours you spend one on one with people suffering, gone in a fucking instant because…

It won’t make anyone more money.

      • Drake

All the generations of trust and respect – gone forever.

Or at least until the next Neuremberg Trials and a lot of hangings.

      • grrizzly

To get to the Nuremberg Trials we need to win the war first. But I haven’t seen any Stalingrad or D-Day battles won by our side.

      • SDF-7

It doesn’t make sense to me. Not the Big Pharma / Big Gov alliance, because *that* bit of power capture we see all the time — but that not just the Health Depts (petty bureaucrats) but the hospitals and all the doctors *all* fell into line to ignore normal immunity for most people, to not do what was standard treatments for respiratory virus infections and to insist that little strips of cloth are meaningful? Nutters who wanted OMB out at all cost, ok — maybe (highly educated == highly propagandized after all)… but months into the Grandpa Badtouch debacle? Why are there not more actual doctors bucking this crap? Has ethics and morality just completely left the building? I find that hard to believe across the entire country….

      • Stinky Wizzleteats

Drop “almost” and you’re dead on. Denying decentralized authority to tailor treatment gives a lot of control over the narrative and, as a result, over people. Submit to medical rape or get fired or get dead. It all comes down to discrediting all vaccine alternatives because they see the public as too goddamn stupid to make their own decisions and that’s the most charitable interpretation of the bullshit they’re doing.

    • hayeksplosives

Wow. I don’t want to believe it.

I feel bad. I took the day off and didn’t tell the wife. I have done nothing but watch ‘vocal coach reacts…’ and ‘Person analyses movie for whatever’ videos all day long.

    • Scruffy Nerfherder

I think we all need a break once in a while.

      • Ownbestenemy

I need to burn 160 hours of leave before December 20th; date that if no appeals are granted, I will be fired if they do not accept my accommodation to not be vaccinated.

      • Nephilium

No pay out for left over PTO? I know my company made the switch from PTO accrual to guidelines just so they wouldn’t be on the hook for a payout.

      • Ownbestenemy

I wish. I could probably put in for a deferred retirement since I do have 15 years, but way under the age of eligibility. I haven’t fully explored that option yet.

      • Stillhunter

My wife has a bit, but she says she can’t tell the difference between resigning and deferred retirement. Also, she and I are of the opinion that resigning is the only way she’ll get her accrued annual leave. Regardless of what the law says (even fired employees get payouts for A/L), we are convinced they will deny that (similar to no unemployment recently for those refusing the vax in private companies). And obviously the courts will be useless in ruling as the law states. They will rule in favor of them being invited to cocktail parties.

P.S. I’m still pondering cashing everything out and buying land in a favorable state along with any other hard assets that can’t be easily stolen with a keystroke. Worst case scenario I paid a bunch of taxes on cash out and we live the last couple decades of our lives as freely as possible. Actually there are worse scenarios, but if those happened we’d all be fucked so…

      • Ownbestenemy

Yeah I am all over the map on what it will be. First step is after the Moderna/Pfizer first shot timetable is blown, I will drop my religious accommodation request.

Then…its probably wait until after November 8th (last day to get J&J) before they determine if granted or not. I say this because I think they want a 2-5% firing of employees and if they determine before the 8th, the employee can seek the J&J.

So somewhere on the 9th of November, if denied the accommodation, I will need to file paperwork to leave December 9th. I pick that date for a couple of reasons. It is when I left the military, it is my birthday and I want it also to be the day I shed myself of the FedGov.

      • Stillhunter

Was it you that said they’d need to approve all or reject all accommodations? I can’t imagine this will be left to first or even second line supervisors. The sheer scale of this would crush HR. It took them weeks to approve my resignation.

I like your idea of having a rebirth. My wife’s birthday is 11/16, but I doubt she’d look at it that way. She’s extremely pissed about having to leave. She still can’t wrap her head around the fact that they don’t want her there anymore

      • Ownbestenemy

Yes. At least for DOT. The DOT order has the front line manager as the decision-maker. However, we are sending requests up to a tiger team and they are giving their recommendations. If I choose to go contrary to that, I have to have a justification.

This is why I think its either going to be a blanket approval or disapproval.

      • Mojeaux

She’s extremely pissed about having to leave. She still can’t wrap her head around the fact that they don’t want her there anymore

Whu? I think I missed something.

      • Ownbestenemy

Stillhunter +1 and myself are pretty much in the same boat. Give up what we do and love to do (I assume her drive is at that point) or succumb and say you beat me.

Home for yet another Friday, so that means I’ll be available to host the Zoom/Happy Hour/Hopeful Elon appearance starting at 20:00 Eastern.

Next two weekends, it’s looking like I’ll be out of pocket. Heading to Cedar Point with the girlfriend for one weekend, and Cleveland Beer Week starts next Friday, and continues until the 24th. Right now I’m waiting on a response on ‘vid requirements/rules for one event before dropping money on tickets for it (which the site helpfully says are non-refundable).

    • Ownbestenemy

I picture you and girlfriend as sung by this during Beer Week.

      • Nephilium

That’s St. Patrick’s Day. Cleveland Beer Week has been much lower key the past three years. Last year is for obvious reasons, and the slow down started when the first chairperson running it was convicted of embezzling funds from the organization that were supposed to go to the charity. After that, the organization announced they were done with it after the 10th year, and some other people stepped up to take over.

Regardless, there’s usually a lot of better then usual beer available for that week around the local haunts.

  17. Scruffy Nerfherder

Neighbor update: Sheriffs office is there along with the vulture friend.

I think adult protective services may have paid her a visit earlier today. She is getting a couple of home health care visits a week and she has a habit of leaving ammo and a revolver laying around. If she has shown any mental lapses during a visit, the presence of the guns would get reported to APS.

Of course, she could also be filing a report against my wife and me for whatever she thinks we did to her, but I think the former situation is much more probable.

If the deputy is searching that house for guns, he’s having a bad day. it’s a semi hoarding situation and Chuck had a lot of guns squirreled away, and I do mean a lot.

    • R C Dean

My other attorney has in-laws that are both in decline. She asked if I would take their guns. She’s Irish, and has an allergy to guns.

I said no, I won’t take them, but I will store them for you. And you absolutely, positiively have to unload them before you leave their house. Apparently, that was a bit of a struggle, between the oikophobia and the unfamiliarity. She was amazed I could pick up two guns I had never seen before and chamber check them (spoiler alert – they managed to unload them).

So, now I have her in-laws’ guns (a nice Browning over-under shotgun and an S & W revolver – I need to do a little research on exactly what they are). I compulsively cleaned and oiled them – tsk, tsk, a touch of surface rust.

I told her to let me know when they were going to do the auction/estate sale, and I would bring them back.

      • Scruffy Nerfherder

I know the neighbor has no such fears. Now ability to aim and pull a trigger may be a different matter.

The vulture friend has now rolled past our house at least twice. We’re out of the way so I know it’s to check us out. I have to assume there’s an obstacle or two preventing her from taking all of the neighbor’s stuff and she thinks it’s our fault. On the third drive by I think I’ll call her and ask if I there’s anything she needs my help with and is afraid to ask.

    • Ownbestenemy

I like the gesture, but I am guessing it was never going to be his responsibility anyway. So its a free statement to make. Still, like it.

    • grrizzly

In MA the vaccinated now account for 45% of COVID deaths. The number keeps rising.

      • Stinky Wizzleteats

I hear you but what’s the percentage vaccinated in Mass? Also, the vaxed include a large number of the most fragile. It’s definitely not as effective as advertised but the deaths among the unvaccinated are disproportionate to the stats.

      • grrizzly

True. But for the first 5-6 weeks since the first injection people are officially considered “unvaccinated.” It would be interesting to know what happens to them.

      • JaimeRoberto (shama/lama/ding dong)

According to the Mayo Clinic 68.3% of the population of MA is fully vaccinated. In general, the northeastern Puritan states have the highest rates.

CA is at 59.6% and FL with that horrible anti-vax governor is at 58%.

      • Urthona

If your vaccination rate hits the 40’s, like Southern States, everyone does.

      • Urthona

Note that ineligible percentages (under 12) varies by state and region, which makes comparisons of total population percentages not exactly apples to apples.

I can’t find under 12 offhand, but under 18 is close yardstick. For that, you have Utah at 30% of their population at one end and Maine at 19% on the other.

        https://www.kff.org/other/state-indicator/distribution-by-age/?currentTimeframe=0&sortModel=%7B%22colId%22:%22Children%200-18%22,%22sort%22:%22desc%22%7D

      • R C Dean

68% if the population is vaxxed, and 45% of the deaths are vaxxed. My crude calculation is that the vax reduces your chance of dying by 1/3.

        Compelling!

      • Stinky Wizzleteats

Compelling evidence for boosters. See, heads I win; tails, you lose.

      • R C Dean

Because another shot of the same stuff that is failing, because the variant it was developed for is disappearing, is going to make a difference.

        something, something, definition of insanity.

      • commodious spittoon

How much are we paying for these shots and each booster?

    • Urthona

Is there a way to track this overall?

  18. The Late P Brooks

    I have never watched Seinfeld.

Oddly enough, earlier to day I read an article in U S News about how the vaxxed are FED THE FUCK UP with the unvaxxed. What unmitigated murderous disregard for the feelings of one’s fellow man. Special guest appearance by Cole Beasley, who gets booed at Bills games for not bending the knee.

Just round them all up and offer them a simple choice: It takes the needle or it gets the bullet.

    • Urthona

      Dude.

      Watch Seinfeld.

      • Tundra

        This. Now on Netflix.

We started from the beginning this week. So goddamn funny!

    • The coolest vaccine-free BEAM in the world™

. . . I read an article in U S News about how the vaxxed are FED THE FUCK UP with the unvaxxed.

Huh. I’ve been reading stuff from the unvaxxed about how they feel the same way towards the vaxxed.

      I’m sure it’ll be fine.

      • Ownbestenemy

And all the normals, as usual, are left holding the bag saying “we don’t give a rat’s ass”

    • Ownbestenemy

When you learn that Art Vandelay was mentioned in the second episode…*mind blown* Seriously, you should watch it all the way through.

      • Sean

        Spoilers!

      • Ownbestenemy

        *shoves Sean* Get out!

If a nearly 30 year old show still needs spoiler alerts…I give up.

      • Sean

  19. The Late P Brooks

That woman just wanted to compare ass fat with the big griz.

  20. The Late P Brooks

Over 25% are breakthrough cases of the vaxxed. Climbing on up…

Obviously the fault of perfectly healthy yet unvaxxed psychopaths.

I pay so little attention to the Motherland. Today a Russian journalist was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize. It was also the first time I heard his name.

    • Stinky Wizzleteats

A Nobel today, an unintended fall to the death tomorrow. Congrats to the guy though.

    • Dr. Fronkensteen

      And the last /Putin

      • Stinky Wizzleteats

I’m not knocking the guy, what he’s doing takes balls, but it’s a political award. There are plenty of places that are way more dangerous to journalists. Funny how the Nobels always seem to comport with western sensibilities now.

    • Ted S.

This of course has nothing to do with international peace or disarmament, which were Alfred Nobel’s intentions.

      • Urthona

I thought his main criteria was being a black American president who is left wing.

  22. The Late P Brooks

Biden says he won’t protect Trump’s papers, I guess.

That may prove to be an interesting precedent when a Republican Congressional committee is looking into Biden’s “negotiations” with Big Pharma in a few years.

    • R C Dean

      (1) Sure, the Repubs are going to do that. The Red fundraising wing of TEAM BE RULED isn’t going to stick their dick into one of their biggest sources of graft.

      (2) In the unlikely event they do, the hard drives will have mysteriously failed (as fedgov hard drives with embarrassing information are prone to do).

    • The Hyperbole

He’ll be dead* why should he care?

      *of natural causes of course.

    • Stinky Wizzleteats

Biden has a 50/50 chance of dying of natural causes within six months and barring that he can plead senility, not that the pussy ass Republicans would ever push the issue anyway.

  23. hayeksplosives

I’m watching an interesting cultural exchange.

Sitting at the new neighborhood bar (beer and wine and food only). There are 2 bartenders on duty. One is a beautiful black haired young woman with a heavy Hispanic accent but a great command of English. The other is a pretty (but less make up wearing) American chick of unknown ethnicity.

They both address the customers in English. But they also talk to each other, in detail at times because they are learning a new money transaction system. The Hispanic chick speaks to the other bartender purely in Spanish, and the other chick answers back purely in English l. I think they might have struck a deal to help each other learn.

    Kind of charming.

    • hayeksplosives

And they appear to have 100% comprehension of everything they say to each other.

      • The Bearded Hobbit

I have a friend of Hispanic heritage who was only allowed to speak English at home when growing up. However, one set of grandparents absolutely refused to speak anything but Spanish (both parties understood the other language)

She said it was interesting visiting with the grandfolks:

        “Como esta, jita?”
        “I’m fine, grandmother. And you?”
        “Bueno, tambien.”

        And so on.

      • hayeksplosives

I had that going on a little with my German in-laws (prior marriage).

    • R C Dean

I’ll be picking up New Mex for dinner tonight. The food is good, but I swear they have the cutest bartender I have ever seen my life. A cute as a button Latina, sadly masked these days. But hey, yoga pants!

      • hayeksplosives

These ladies are unmasked! We are in a census designated zone, under the jurisdiction of the sheriff, who has zero fucks to give about cloth over the face unless you’re heading to a bank.

      • Dr. Fronkensteen

One thing I did enjoy was walking into a bank while masked.

      • Tulip

I make a point to do it in banks.

    • Dr. Fronkensteen

Same sort of thing happened where I worked a number of years ago. Two women on a factory floor next to each other would talk in their native languages. The difference is that one was speaking Spanish and the other was speaking Arabic.

    • Ownbestenemy

Amazing how people, when not forced, make things work is it not?

      • Stinky Wizzleteats

I’m going to develop a philosophy where people are forced to not force people. I haven’t fleshed it out yet but it’s the only way.

      • Yusef drives a Kia

    • Mojeaux

One time I went to an old-timey diner chain for dinner. I was by myself and I was seated right next to the kitchen door. I saw a bunch of cute little high school waitresses gathered around an old grizzled Mexican cook with a heavy accent. They moved a little and I saw that he was at a whiteboard doing algebraic equations and teaching the girls, who were all taking notes. I watched for a while till I guess the manager came back and barked at everybody. One of the waitresses was mine. I asked her what the deal was. The cook was a math teacher in Mexico, but came here and the only job he could get was as a short-order cook at Waid’s.

      • Ownbestenemy

Wait…so you were at Oldman’s diner? And instead of a Mexican, it was a Jew and instead of Math it was anal sex?

      • Mojeaux

Um … I hate to admit this, but I didn’t get the joke …

      • Tundra

OMWC runs a diner. His schooling is NOT algebra.

      • Mojeaux

*headdesk* Didn’t make the connection to OMWC.

      • Tundra

OMW call for Greta to give up ass sex and he working in a college town….obscure…I know…I was bored today damn it!

      • hayeksplosives

That is a lovely story, Mo.

He probably could’ve taught at a high school or middle school if he had attended Indoctrination 101 with a bunch of “educators” and learned to bend the knee to the Union.

    • Sensei

I do that all the time with my language partner.

Frequently we do the reverse as speaking is harder than listening. The looks people gave us in Japan was priceless.

White guy speaking accented Japanese and Asian woman speaking accented English.

  24. The Late P Brooks

Will Diana Moon Glampers be putting the curriculum together?

“The era of judging 4-year-olds based on a single test is over,” de Blasio said in a statement. “Brilliant NYC will deliver accelerated instruction for tens of thousands of children, as opposed to a select few. Every New York City child deserves to reach their full potential, and this new, equitable model gives them that chance.”

Sure, Bill. They’ll all be above average when you get through with them.

    • rhywun

What a steaming pile of horseshit.

All this will do is drive parents who care about their children’s education to the suburbs (faster).

That fucking racist commie can’t disappear in disgrace fast enough.

  25. The Late P Brooks

The city will also train all kindergarten teachers to provide accelerated learning in areas ranging from robotics and computer coding to community organizing.

    Okey-doke.

    • rhywun

      community organizing

OFFS. Training them to hate their parents, no doubt.

      • Sean

        To report on them too.

      • rhywun

It’s just mind-blowing. Does anybody not know what that shit is code for?! Are the parents here so beat down and ignorant that they just don’t care?

      • Ownbestenemy

Two completely different views and yet…this is what a debate should look like.

      • Ownbestenemy

Sure…here. I meant to put this here. Go away!

    • Ownbestenemy

I am going to my niece’s baby shower. I will not be discussing my vax status, my job, my anything other than getting ready to welcome a little ankle-biter into the world. Because that is what is important.

If any of my family does ask, I will just ignore and brush off and refocus to what is at hand. I will be a great uncle soon. Everything else can fuck off.

      • Tundra

        I am a great uncle x 5. It’s a pretty sweet gig.

        Congrats!

      • Ownbestenemy

I am stoked! I was blessed at a young age to be an uncle and being the youngest kid in the family, that gave me some…space to not be the youngest. But my nieces and nephew are just like my kids. I helped raise them since I was 10! Drove them to school, gymnastics practice, softball practice, played hockey with them…yeah…no one is keeping me from being there.

  26. The Late P Brooks

I’m going to develop a philosophy where people are forced to not force people. I haven’t fleshed it out yet but it’s the only way.

    That trick never works.

It is becoming a bit like socialism. It will work this time!

    • Stinky Wizzleteats

Champion generators and their customer support are awesome. I couldn’t find the engine vibration mounts on their parts site so I emailed them and they said…”We will send these out to you at no cost”.

Wow! I mean, its probably $5 bucks worth of parts, but that is how you do business.

    • Ted S.

If everyone gets the bus, their pregnancy rate must be sky high.

      • Ownbestenemy

Uh….I wouldn’t be going after the manufacturer but after the coaches…but that is me. Or did I read the series of events wrong?

      • Sensei

No you read it right. But if you are plaintiff attorney you go after the folks with the deepest pockets and weakest shield from liability.
