GlibFit 4.0 – Fitness Trackers

This week’s article is definitely an open call for comments. I do not know anything about fitness trackers. I have never used one. If you use one or have experience with them (good or bad) then tell us about it in the comments.

From what I can tell from my daughters using their Apple watches and online “research,” fitness trackers and apps claim to help you move more, sleep better, and improve your overall health. The most basic application is a step counter that is built into an app in your phone.

A step up from there are watches, bracelets, and chest straps. These will measure your heart rate by shining light into your skin and measuring blood flow. It’s funny, back in the 60s this would have been considered science fiction. I mean it seriously. This is some Star Trek (The Original Series, thank you) level stuff. But I digress.

Fitness trackers can track your sleep. They watch for movement using a three-axis accelerometer to a more sensitive degree than they do during the day when you are walking, running, or wanking doing other activities. Most devices offer graphs in their companion app showing the duration of your light, deep, and REM sleep. Some also track your overnight respiration (the number of breaths you take per minute). Some can even track your snoring. I suppose that makes it a good Christmas for the man in your life. Amirite ladies and/or gay Glibs?

Maybe I am a luddite, but I don’t see the use for most people. I can see why a sport-specific watch is useful. Runners want to time themselves, may want split times, and may want a countdown timer for sprints or time specific movements. I have no doubt bikers and swimmers have needs specific to their sports.

I am sure the elite athletes among you and maybe those of you with certain health concerns have a use for more sophisticated tracking. For me personally, I have all I need in my digital watch. Let us know in the comments how and why you use your fitness tracker.

This week’s music is inspired by fitness trackers. I’m not exactly sure how it is related but it popped into my head.

My GF recently got a fitbit in an attempt to track and encourage herself to do more walking/movement. It seems to be working, but the counting of the steps is a little comical to me.

    • Tonio

All the younger people I know count steps. It’s the newest currency of the fitness world.

Also, the most numbers-obsessed athletes I know are all women.

I’m entertained that the 10,000 step thing was chosen at random by someone selling a pedometer.

Oh, cool – they have an instrument that can tell when people have an unhealthy attraction to kids?

Regarding the “Star Trek” stuff, the US space program in the 1960s contributed significantly to medical monitoring technology. They wanted to monitor animal, and then human, spacefarers–first to determine the effects of space on their bodies, later to ensure their health as well as monitor experimentation–and had to create the technology of sophisticated medical telemetry largely from the gorund up.

    • Chafed

Is that technology the basis for today’s fitness trackers?

    • Mojeaux

Stuff like that is why I don’t (or didn’t) mind NASA’s budget. They have done a lot of groundbreaking things besides just getting to space.

      • Chafed

I have the impression NASA was genuinely innovative and doing important basic research in the 60s and 70s. Maybe it stretched into the early 80s. Since then it seems adrift and burning cash to little productive end.

      • Suthenboy

        Tang, anyone?

      • The Hyperbole

You should (or should have) minded it, regardless of any good they may have done (arguable) they were funded by theft, fraud, and aggression.

      • Mojeaux

Tell me something. Should we discount the medical discoveries the Nazis made?

I’m not being snarky. I’m genuinely asking. My dad believed that all the medical research the Nazis did should have been buried like nuclear waste.

I have raised this question here before, and I am still undecided.

Shat I don’t resent is that the research DARPA/NASA did was shared to the benefit of private companies who would be decades behind without it.

      • Nephilium

Questions like that were a plot point in one of the Spider Robinson Callahan short stories. How much suffering does it take for something to be permanently tainted?

In his stories, he never gave a definitive answer, just a personal one by the narrator and several characters.

      • The Hyperbole

Of course not, If some good comes out of people doing bad you don’t throw away the good after the fact, the damage is done, but it’s not a reason to excuse those who did wrong. I don’t think you would say “Well the Nazi’s were bad but they discovered some really cool shit so I’m kinda good with the holocaust having happened”. Yes on the scale of evil NASA is exponentially smaller but still should never have existed, even if we got some good out of it. Not to get all slippery slope, but if you can justify some unjust aggressions because of the perceived benefit of the outcome where do you draw that line.

      • Mojeaux

        should never have existed,

I won’t argue that. But it did and does. Taxpayers have gotten quite a bit of benefit out of it, certainly more than any other gummint program that shouldn’t exist.

But I will agree that it should never have existed.

      • westernsloper

Shat I don’t resent is that the research DARPA/NASA did was shared to the benefit of private companies who would be decades behind without it.

        Cronyism FTW!

      • Mojeaux

        Point taken.

I have a pulse oximeter that I bought to monitor my O2 saturation when flying–it’s a bit amazing to me that such a small device can fit on the end of my finger and tell me my pulse rate and O2 saturation without directly sampling my blood.

    • Chafed

Why is that needed? Serious question. I’m thinking of getting a pilot’s license in the next year or two. Your comment gives me some concern.

      • db

When flying under Part 91 rules (requiring a private certificate) in an unpressurized aircraft above 12,500 to 14,000 feet for more than 30 minutes, or above 14,000 MSL for any duration, the pilot is legally required to use supplemental oxygen due to the effects of hypoxia.

However the physiological effects of oxygen deprivation can be significant even at lower altitudes, so many pilots choose to use supplemental oxygen at those altitudes. The effects are variable for different people, and do not necessarily depend on your state of health and fitness.

I like to use oxygen now for any flight more than an hour at over 9,000 feet or so.

Also, at night, O2 deprivation is deleterious for your vision and it’s not a bad idea to use it anytime at night.

I bought the oximeter to see what the effects were on me personally. While my saturation never drops much below 93% without O2, I can really tell the effects–euphoria, slow thinking, forgetfulness–at altitude. Plus, when you’re flying long trips, you get pretty fatigued at altitude–o2 makes that go away almost completely. Some people get headaches at altitude (not pressure related, but because of O2 deprivation).

      • Chafed

Thanks db. Is this something covered in flight training or something you pick up from other pilots?

      • db

Aeromedical factors are an important part of ground school, and the written and practical knowledge tests for the certifcates have plenty of questions on them.

      • Chafed

Thanks. I don’t imagine my ego will get in the way. I’m deeply invested in staying alive.

      • db

Also, lots of pilots don’t use O2 unless they’re in a situation where it’s legally required–some because they genuinely don’t need it, many more because they kind of see it as a macho thing not to need it. But it’s becoming more and more common to see people using it even when not strictly prescribed by regulation.

      • db

Some aircraft (even pressurized) that are capable of flying at altitudes high enough to result in unconsciousness if pressurization or supplemental O2 is lost now have built-in pulse oximeters tied into the autopilot that will automatically descend the airplane to a safe altitude and even make radio distress calls if the pilot’s O2 saturation goes too low.

I used a basic non bluetooth device for a while, but after a while, it didn’t make a difference, 9 miles, 11 miles, meh.

  6. Mojeaux

I used a FitBit for a long time, and I loved it because I got a little zap when I reached my goal. It encouraged me to keep going.

I stopped wearing it because whenever I went to the store (the majority of my walking at the time) (I’d park at the very back of the lot), the jiggling of the grocery cart as I pushed it along would reset it.

Now it is old and doesn’t keep a charge.

Found while searching for spices on a supplier website:

    Q. Does my bologna or sausage need a binder?

    A. It depends on a few factors, like the diameter of the bologna and the amount of fat in the mixture. As a general guideline, larger diameter (2 inches or more) bologna containing 25% or more fat would be helped by the addition of a binder.

  8. Toxteth O'Grady

Pulse ox? Bactrack? Keto sticks? Only if an informational cul-de-sac.

    • Toxteth O'Grady

Also untethered: handheld scale? Not sure how accurate they are.

      • Toxteth O'Grady

Sorry, guess that wasn’t quite the question, but it’s my answer.

  9. Nephilium

I’ve got a Fitbit (company offered a large discount on it through our health care program), and I like it for the heart rate tracking. The step counts are anything but accurate, but at least it reminds me to get out of the chair once an hour to walk around for a bit.

Saved this link for you as a reminder if you’re picking up a new exercise routine, you need to pay attention to pain and injuries much more.

    • Gustave Lytton

Same with my Apple Watch. Reminds me to get up, and it works.

    • Chafed

      JFC that article is frightening.

      • Nephilium

Yep. For me the biggest thing was ignoring the pain and strange feelings until things got worse.

Of course, this lead to a bunch of news things hitting my feed from people talking about how spin classes were going to kill people, and people (most likely out of shape) complaining that spin classes tried to “kill” them.

/currently pissed that I had to cancel what I had booked to get back into spin classes and to burn through my class credits since I’m sick

      • Chafed

Sorry about your Covid diagnosis. On the plus side, you will soon be bulletproof.

      • Nephilium

No diagnosis yet. Getting confirmation tomorrow.

The fact I’ve got no sense of smell or taste right now is my personal confirmation. I’ve learned I can still taste hops (barely), peppermint oil is a minor flavor, and crackers don’t even have a salty flavor (just a texture) at this point. I have abused this power to kill off some ciders the girlfriend has had in the basement for over 8 months.

OT – where is Not Adahn and my horrible horoscope.

With a refrigerator full of Thanksgiving food YouTube and the rest of internet has determined that my main refrigerator control board has shit the bed.

Amazon, who is not noted recently for its shipping reliability is supposed to be sending me a new one tomorrow. I need all the good vibes the Glibs can muster.

    What a PITA…

    • Toxteth O'Grady

Will pray to St. Lawrence for you. So sorry, dude.

    • Sean

      That sucks.

    • db

ugh. Is the fridge still cooling? If not, man, go grab a big cooler and some ice…

      • Sensei

        Nope. I’m iced up now.

Will be off to the liquor store for ice tomorrow if Amazon fails me.

      • Gustave Lytton

        Dry ice is your friend!

      • db

        good idea

      • Toxteth O'Grady

        And coolers (duh).

      • Sensei

PITA location for dry ice. I’ll see what I can do with regular ice for the fridge. Worst case, yeah.. I’ll go.

Fortunately, I have a small chest freezer, but with the food in it not much room for making ice.

Good news is the turkey was frozen and I just chucked it in the fridge to thaw. So it will actually help cool too.

      • db

That sucks. I had a fridge controller go bad but it kept holding temperature; just every other function of the fridge failed to work.

      • UnCivilServant

What other function is there? Turning off the light when you close the door?

      • db

ice maker, dispenser, water dispenser, etc. fluff stuff

  11. R C Dean

I used a Whoop for awhile. Interesting, would have been more interesting with an O2 Sat monitor. I think it did help me get a little more sleep, but other than that, I think they are mostly useful for very serious athletes.

  12. Tonio

I don’t use a dedicated tracking device. I don’t like jewelry, so no watches, rings, ankle bracelets, etc. I use an app on my phone and that gives me enough information.

    • Suthenboy

I barely caught a blip on the news last night something something protesting in the Netherlands and cops shot live rounds. Some injured, none killed.
I wonder what could have happened that the govt has the impression they can use live rounds against its own citizens. It is a mystery.

*looks at ceiling and thoughtfully tugs chin*

Nothing ever changes. Humans are garbage. We’ll repeat history until we mercifully die off.

      • rhywun

        cops shot live rounds

The story I have seen doesn’t specify “live rounds”. It is heavily slanted in favor of the government, surprise surprise.

      • Suthenboy

I would not swear by it. I was doodling around the house and in the background the words ‘live rounds’ caught my attention. That is just the impression I got.

    • rhywun

      Brussels, Rome, Amsterdam, etc. etc.

Meanwhile the best my city of 8.8 million can muster is a few freakshows graffiti tagging anti-cop shit and forming drum circles in the middle of the Brooklyn Bridge.

      • Chafed

They broke out the drum circles?!? Now it’s getting serious.

      • rhywun

No, I made that up. But I think they were “taking the knee” at one point in the middle of the bridge.

      • Chafed

NYC is hopeless. It used to have balls. Now, not so much.

      • rhywun

Pretty much. Though to be fair, we aren’t being punished quite as hard as Europeans are, yet. So I can’t go to a restaurant or sporting event – big whoop. They are being prevented from supporting themselves in many cases.

  14. Nephilium

That Browns game was fugly as hell. At least we won. I do not have high hopes against the Ravens next week.

    • Ghostpatzer

Take heart, if Jackson is out there’s a chance.

      • Nephilium

After today’s game against the Lions, I doubt that.

Baker got sacked again today, and was limping again.

      • The Hyperbole

Why Baker even played this week is a mystery, dude gimps worse than me and my ankle is so shot I’m getting it replaced, well I will if the fucking doctors ever get their shit together. 4 weeks after waiting 4 weeks for a CT scan I find out I need another one because the first didn’t show the right stuff, “We’ll get right on scheduling that, should be about 4 weeks”, what the fucking fuck people!)

      • Mojeaux

Ankle (and wrist) replacements don’t usually work out too well, and certainly not as well as knees, hips, and shoulders.

      • The Hyperbole

Yeah I know but I figure I’ll give it a go. I’m too young (and too pretty) to spend the rest of my life gimping around.

      • Nephilium

Yeah. If I was Stefanski, I would have fucking benched Baker today. Watching him limp off at the end was not reassuring. This week, I would have been happy with Keenum in, and letting Baker rest until the Ravens game next week.

I’m mildly annoyed since I’ve got tickets for the Ravens game up here in CLE. At least that’s after the bye.

  15. UnCivilServant

What’s a good place to find mill vices that can be attached to the deck of the milling machine? The one that came with the machine isn’t big enough for the work pieces I’ve got.

    • db

      littlemachineshop.com

      msc direct

      • db

I have the 5″ precision vise that I use on my combo lathe/mill. It might be a little big for a mini mill.

      • db

Also, you might just want to use setup clamps and things rather than a vise, depending on the application. The mill table should be big enough to hold down what you’re working on with the proper clamp and bold set–if not, the mill itself is probably too small.

The advantage of using the mill table is that you do away with the thickness of the vise, and any play or misalignment it may have. The drawback is more time and work setting up the work.

      • UnCivilServant

        Where do I find those?

I’m trying to deal with the problem caused by only having regular old clamps, and they’re either in the way of the traverse, or not holding the piece well enough and it walks while cutting. I’m doing test cuts on machinable wax to learn the machine, so no real work has been ruined yet.

      • UnCivilServant

        * I have regular old clamps, and a mill vice that came with the machine that is too small.

The mill vice works fantastic, but doesn’t open wide enough for one of the operations.

      • Seguin

Don’t buy a made in china one. They are rarely square. Kurt is an excellent brand, though expensive. I also might suggest Grizzly, although they do sell Chinese stuff, so be careful. I’ve had so-so luck with them.

      • Seguin

Oh, Shars is also a good one. Their quality has really gone up – they’re trying to source from Taiwan and the USA more now.

  16. Urthona

I’d pay $2000 for a device that tracks calories in.

    • Nephilium

The Fitbit app has some decent barcode scanning (that is usually good), and will keep track of what your goals should be based on your weight goals.

    • Chafed

      You get me Q.

      • Penguin

I can see the spot where it went wrong.

    • Chafed

As a fitness video that’s painful. As the start of a porn video….

  17. hayeksplosives

I like the V19. It’s relatively cheap (<$50), tracks steps, blood ox, blood pressure (!!), sleep, and if you put a finger on the electrode, it will transmit your ekg to your phone. Has the “stand up” reminder, which is good for office work.

Works for android or iPhone, although the app is a little weird. You can manually enter your weight in the app too.

I like the blood pressure part best.

  18. Jerms

My wife wanted an Apple watch to track her movement and calories and all that good stuff. Very expensive. Still sitting in the same spot where she plugged it in to charge the day I gave it to her. Her birthday was July 15. Doesnt bother me at all. Its wonderful. All good.

As far as glibfit goes, I started lo carb eating Nov 1st. Lost a quick 13 lbs in the first 12 days but not a pound since then. Have been in constant ketosis since day 4.
Energy is up, waking up in the morning raring to go, instead of having to drag myself along and pound coffee as fast as I can.
Downside is that no matter what I do my breath is deadly. Its good that I dont have many friends.

    • Mojeaux

Expect those kinds of plateaus. Measure your body and notice your clothes instead of relying on the scale.

I have no suggestions on the breath except maybe eating Tums?

    • Sean

Fat bombs. Eat more fat bombs and maybe some Altoids.

      • Sean

        That’s what I’m talking about.

      • Mojeaux

I didn’t use any extra sweetening when I made those last. The strawberries were enough.

      • Jerms

Wow Mo, those look crazy good. Im going to try those.
I’ve tried tons of water and parsley oil but my wife says its not working.

      • Mojeaux

Don’t know what to say about the breath. I’d try Tums or Altoids. Maybe sugar free gum.

      • westernsloper

Be advised SF gum has 1g carb each. I am trying to get off it.

      • Mojeaux

I don’t chew gum, so I don’t know. There’s got to be some solution to the problem.

    • westernsloper

Are you measuring morning blood sugar and ketones?

      • Jerms

I just use the ketone sticks every once in a while so I know Im still in ketosis. Never blood sugar though.

      • Mojeaux

Can you get a glucose monitor/sticks without an rx?

      • Tundra

        I have one of these.

Plain glucose monitors are plentiful. Look at Abbott’s if you just want the basics.

      • westernsloper

        Yep got mine at walmart.

  19. Chipping Pioneer

The wife and I wanted out from Fitbit when they got bought by Google. So we each got Garmin watches. They tend to undercount steps rather than overcount them like the Fitbits did. The nice thing is that they look like traditional watches, rather than “devices”. Also a few more features, some are different. And less upselling than Fitbit.

    • Lady Z

I took my Fitbit off permanently the moment I learned of the google acquisition. I liked the sleep tracking features but honestly sleep better now that I don’t have a device on my wrist.

    • juris imprudent

My wife just switched from FitBit (which I took to referring to as “the shitbit” because it was constantly taking a shit) to Garmin.

I used to wear a heart rate monitor back in the day when they were super cutting edge. Polar? I liked that it tracked the time my heart rate was in the “zone” I wanted or when close to max but that was 20 years ago. Now I am usually close to max doing anything other than boiling water so it is much easier and I don’t need a monitor.

A brisk 26 this morning and the bike was ridden. I went to the flatish spot and achieved the longest ride up the grade yet.

Fox’s football graphics are usually excellent. Putting the football graphic next to the score is confusing. I thought Dallas had negative 3 points before I realized what they were doing.

    • Mojeaux

Money quote, “The term was purportedly coined by frustrated female students at Sarah Lawrence College in upstate New York — where three-quarters of all enrollees are the fairer sex.” Here is a life lesson ladies, supply and demand are real.

  23. Suthenboy

Hmmm. regarding the Netherlands, yes there are reports of live rounds being used by the cops. Reports…take that for what it is worth. They sure sounded like live rounds to me but then, I wasn’t there.

  24. grrizzly

I have Forerunner 35 from Garmin for running but it can do more than that. It can constantly monitor the heart rate and sleep stages. A couple of nights I was wearing it in bed and it recorded deep and light sleep stages. However, I stopped wearing it casually because it beeps and displays a warning message after 2 hours of no physical activity. Makes no sense when you work all day indoors and walking to another room and back doesn’t reset it. I realized that this watch is not intended to be constantly worn.

  25. Fourscore

I have an automatic step reminder. About 3 times a day Mrs F hollers downstairs at me.

“You’d better get your lazy ass to work, you don’t want me to down and remind you, do you?”

She can do it in American or Viet Nam language, I get the meaning in either case.

I use the scale as my monitor, a few months ago I lost a lot of weight in a hurry, had no appetite for a couple months. Now I’m back to enjoying food and regained the weight I’d lost. Unfortunately the muscle tone disappeared and all the regained weight ended up in the belly. Life goes on…

  26. Tundra

    Chafed!

Good subject. I resisted the tracking stuff for a long time, but now I love it.

    I have a Garmin Vivoactive 4.

If I would have known that I was moving to the mountains, I would have bought a different one, but the Garmin is a sweet tracker.

I know that it isn’t as accurate as actual medical equipment, but it doesn’t matter. The absolute numbers are less important than the trends.

WARNING: If you start tracking stuff, you will find that alcohol wrecks pretty much everything. You will find that lack of sleep and high stress fucks up everything else. This isn’t necessarily helpful.

It was a very mediocre week for me. I aim to improve.

    Have a great week, Glibfitters!

Your warning may have permanently put off of using a tracker.

      • Tundra

Why? It’s a perfect opportunity to try to game the system!

      • Nephilium

I can see in the heart rate monitoring exactly when I start drinking on the weekends.

      Yes, yes it does.

I have a heart rate monitor (Ezon) that’s NOT internet. It was hard to find.

    • Chafed

      Is Ezon your dog’s name?

    • Yusef drives a Kia

My device is no internet, I like that,

      (by slowing blood circulation)

YA, THAT IS A BIG NO!

    • mikey

Read an article somewhere where a woman caught her husband cheating. She looked at his data and saw high rates at late hours when he was on business trips.

    • Chafed

      WTF? Pun intended.

  28. Annoyed Nomad

Kind of late to the discussion – I have a Mi Fit fitness tracker that I bought on Amazon for about $30. I previously had a more expensive Fitbit. The damn strap of the Fitbit broke twice (was replaced the first time under warranty) and they don’t design the Fitbit for strap replacement – it’s integrated. The Mi Fit band is easily replaceable (about $5, I think).

It doesn’t have all the bells and whistles of an Apple watch, although they improve with each new version. I would recommend it to anyone who wants to try out a fitness tracker.

    • Nephilium

The Fitbit I’ve got has $7 replacement bands easily available on Amazon. I’ve got a small pile of bands sitting on my desk.

      • Annoyed Nomad

They came up with it too late – after losing me as a customer.

    • Annoyed Nomad

Search for “Xiaomi Mi band”. The latest version is number 6, which costs over $40, but you can get a version 5 for $30. I think I have a version 3 or 4 since I’ve owned for a while.

I wonder if Mark Ruffalo will come up with a cute nickname for the driver or if he only does that for pedophiles.

      • Chafed

You know the answer. I also expect him to ignore the use of the car as a weapon and focus on the gun.

    • The Last American Hero

I’ll wait and see how much CNN gets their panties in a bunch over the religious bigotry angle to the story.

turnstile footage shows the suspect who was covered from head to toe in clothing making it impossible to discern any features

Hm. I wonder which article of clothing is especially relevant here.

    • Animal

      Col. Cooper said it best:

“Let us reflect upon the fact that a man who covers his face shows reason to be ashamed of what he is doing. A man who takes it upon himself to shed blood while concealing his identity is a revolting perversion of the warrior ethic. It has long been my conviction that a masked man with a gun is a target. I see no reason to change that view.”

      • Animal

And yes, this perp had a knife, not a gun, but the statement still applies.

      • rhywun

But at least he’s not going to kill my grandma. Well, with his breath, anyway.

In case you weren’t aware, the masking is required on all subway property* and don’t think for a minute that this will give anyone a second’s hesitation in continuing this policy.

*Except for all the cops pictured in the article

This is very 70s NYC. How long until you get Bernie Goetz, II.

  31. JaimeRoberto (shama/lama/ding dong)

I use a heart rate monitor during my bike rides. I got it because I thought my heart was going to jump out of my chest after a particularly difficult climb making me think I should know if I’m doing something unhealthy. Since then I haven’t really used the information in real time since the monitor is linked to my phone which is in my back pocket. For Christmas I bought myself a bike computer so I can see the real time data.

What is the body of water that is adjacent to the SoFi football stadium in LA? Is it some kind of canal?
