Saturday evening links of, COVID!!!

It haunts my dreams.

Here we go again. It’s gonna be a lovely Christmas of lockdowns and mandates, and hysteria. On that note;

“All Covid variations are Xi.”

Oh, never mind.

The only thing I know about Stephen Sondheim is when Sally Fields mentions him in Smokey and the Bandit.

“Minnesoda nice.”

“Just please quit shooting at us.”

This should be fun.

The dude was just working his Pornhub side hustle.

It’s right around the corner!

I wonder if the girlfriend got one of the classy Covid variants or one of the low rent ones. She’s still under quarantine order for another 12 days. Not that I’m counting down or anything…

Maybe she’ll finally learn the rules of football tomorrow.

    • UnCivilServant

If anyone comes close to you, grab a shin and flop on the turf.

Oh, American football… *shrug* I still can’t figure it out.

    • Dr. Fronkensteen

Simple, if you get three strikes and you have to punt unless you get a goal.

      • Zwak, sensual panzer

        The 28th.

    • Nephilium

I have commandeered a copy of the girlfriend’s health orders. My personal favorite bits:

Restrict contact with pets and other animals. If you must care for your pet or be around animals while you are sick, wash your hands before and after your interaction and wear a facemask.
Wear a face mask when in the same room as other people or pets. If a face mask interferes with your breathing, others should wear a mask when sharing space with you.
Immediately clean any surfaces that may have blood, poop [the guidance says poop, not feces, and uses it multiple times] or body fluids on them, using antibacterial cleaning solutions such as Lysol wipes, bleach, cleansers, etc.

      • UnCivilServant

        Antibacterial? For a virus?

I get that bleach is a broad-spectrum anti-organic chemical, but still.

      • Nephilium

That’s why that bit stood out. Earlier in the guidance they do specify that antibiotics will not help against Covid, and you shouldn’t take them for it.

      • Gustave Lytton

Antibacterial and antimicrobial are synonyms. Health experts at work.

      • Spudalicious

        Poop contains bacteria.

      • DEG

        Fuck.

        NH’s orders weren’t that stupid.

  2. The Gunslinger

I wonder if Xi had any input on not naming a variant Xi?

    • Spudalicious

No. He has, “people” to handle those things.

      • Gustave Lytton

Just like with the NBA and a host of others, they know what they need to do to not to piss off the chicoms.

      • Dr. Fronkensteen

And like Diamon if you forget you’ll get a reminder.

  3. Gustave Lytton

The best part of the song is the little bit of banter before they sit down and sing (and I still like them singing together).

  4. Gender Traitor

The WHO last used letters “Lambda” and “Mu” to designate variants of interest.

The latter undoubtedly inspired too many lame “mad cow disease” jokes.

    Like this one.

    • UnCivilServant

When’s the Lemuria variant come out?

      • Gender Traitor

When I looked that up, I learned that this is Wikipedia Asian Month. Do all continents have their own Wikipedia month, or is Asia special for some reason?

      • UnCivilServant

Probably not Europe or modern america.

Did you at least follow the wikiwalk to Mu?

      • Gender Traitor

Ah! I didn’t get that far. I actually first landed on the “lost continent” Lemuria entry. I rather like this coat of arms that gives it a shout-out.

      • Gender Traitor

        All the way down.

    • westernsloper

Lambda and Mu remind me of revenge of the nerds.

  5. westernsloper

Guadalupe may be a place of interest.

    • Dr. Fronkensteen

I thought your “portfolio” was strictly Africa agent Sloper?

      • Gustave Lytton

Maybe he’s got a date with a chick by that name?

    • The Gunslinger

“They’re running an investment firm, and then hopefully it also develops a drug that’s successful.”

      Sounds about right.

“First are the two vaccine trials for undisclosed infectious diseases. Coming next is a one-time treatment for heart failure”

      How convenient.

      • Ted S.

It’s one-time because it’ll make your heart fail completely, obviating the need for any further treatment.

  6. Nephilium

Still at home and upright, so I’ll kick off the Zoom/Happy Hour/Beer Geekery at 20:00 Eastern. The CDC recommends turning off all 5G devices to avoid the Covid contagion from my house.

    • Fourscore

You ain’t no patriot unless you got all the vaccines, boosters and the future monthly boosters. Joe Biden

    • Tulip

      Thanks Neph!

  7. Fourscore

    “Wisconsin police officer resigns”
“bystander, recorded the incident in the parking lot of a Farm and Fleet”

I shop Farm and Fleet and all I’ve ever got was a pair of bib overalls and a bag of Eileen’s orange slices candy

      • Fourscore

Grassl was found guilty of drink driving

If Auburn manages to pull off a win against Alabama, a lot of bookies are going to be unhappy.

    • The Gunslinger

Auburn had a chance to win it with their offense by picking up a first down. They were content to punt the ball away and Alabama made them pay. Now they get overtime.

      • hayeksplosives

Yeah, they were acting like they had a comfortable lead when it was just one score. That changed in a hurry.

    • Ted S.

Bad news: they’ve gotten through two OT periods.

      Time for the penalty shootout.

  9. Not Adahn

Can confirm that UnCiv showed up with a Henry with a Sig Romeo clamped to it.

    He probably won the day.

I discovered that even with a full choke, #10 high brass 12 ga will not knock over a plate at 20 yards. Anyone want to buy the rest of my supply, cheap? Of course, since I know the guy who “designs” the stages I could make them all closer.

I spent a bit over six hours outside today. It was colder than I thought it’s be. I’ll have to start wearing a scarf.

I also got to spend a few seconds working on my trigger pull on my EDC. It’s amazing how much more you have to work on keeping the gun still between the time you think it’s going to go bang and the bullet actually leaving the gun.

    • Sensei

I think you’ve mentioned before not to piss UnCiv off…

      • Not Adahn

Yeah, he really is remarkably good for someone that’s not at the range regularly. He has beaten me multiple times, though we’ve never competed in the same division.

      • UnCivilServant

I expected to miss more than I did today.

    • UnCivilServant

I tried looking up the times on practiscore, but nothing’s showing. Is that because I didn’t register through the site, or because they weren’t posted yet?

      • Not Adahn

Not posted. Mike isn’t the fastest guy about that.

        Next KWS – Dec 18.

      • UnCivilServant

I set a calendar reminder for it.

    • Spudalicious

#10 shot is like the shotgun coughing on the plate.

      • UnCivilServant

We were joking that the gas was doing more to knock down the steel than the pellets.

      • Not Adahn

I’m having trouble figuring out what it’s for? Shooting tame squirrels? Snakes? Iguanas in colder weather?

      • UnCivilServant

It would bounce off iguana hide.

      • Sean

        I’ve never seen it before.

      • Spudalicious

        Probably a snake load.

      • Spudalicious

        Yep. Snakes and rats only.

      • Not Adahn

Rats wouldn’t let you get close enough for the shot to be effective.

      • Spudalicious

Unless it’s eating a slice of pizza.

      • EvilSheldon

20 yards is long range for birdshot on steel.

But pattern your gun, if you haven’t lately.

  10. Not Adahn

Dragging the lever gun thread from the oldpost,

I have been very good about not buying one, though I want one. My saving grace is that before I buy something I need to have a plausible reason to own it that involves shooting it. Even if it’s just “a backup in case this gun I need to shoot a lot breaks.” While I could plausibly use it for SASS games, the other thing that’s been keeping my wallet closed it waiting until this next thing comes out. Like on the Henrys, it was until ones with loading gates came out. Now that’s happened, but I’ve been able to hold out until the Ruger Marlins make their appearance.

    • UnCivilServant

I would like a loading gate one… but I also don’t want to go into debt to buy another toy. My budget was based on cash on hand.

    • Spudalicious

I have a Winchester 1873 in .32-20, and a Henry in .22. Love both of them.

      • Sean

My Henry .22 has the octagon barrel.

      • Spudalicious

I have the cheap one. My Winchester has an octagonal barrel.

    • Q Continuum

I have a Marlin .45-70 and if it were a woman, I would have sex with it.

      /possibly not saying that much

    • DEG

I’ve wanted to add some lever guns to my collection, but I don’t know enough about them. I’ve made enough mistakes with the milsurps I own. I have a book on the Winchester 1895. After I read it… watch out.

      • Fourscore

After today’s discussion I got interested in a lever .41 mag. Henry makes or made them but everyone seemed to be out of stock. I have a .41 Contender that I used to kill a deer this season.

    • UnCivilServant

Well, there’s an embarassing little development.

The guy at the gun store said the Henry’s tube held five rounds. So at the range that’s all I loaded. It seemed a bit odd, and the website was talking about ’10+1 tubes’. So I went and tested how many rounds I could actually load into the gun. It took all ten of my remaining cartridges without a problem.

      • Fourscore

Well, the gun store guy was right, it did hold 5 rounds. Mistakes were made.

    • MikeS

If/when I get a lever gun it will be chambered in .357 Mag. Simplifies SHTF situations.

      • The Bearded Hobbit

I bought the Henry Big Boy in .357. Still looking for a Marlin 1894 in same.

      • UnCivilServant

How’s that one run? I don’t expect it to be much different from the other calibers, but I have to ask.

      • The Bearded Hobbit

        $1200

Most expensive gun that I’ve bought (so far).

      • UnCivilServant

I actually meant “how well does it shoot?”

      • The Bearded Hobbit

Like a dream. I’m going to keep the iron sights, at least for now.

Talking to my gun buddy today, the .357 has a 16″ burnout, so more or less ideal for a rifle rather than a pistol.

      • slumbrew

The other attraction: also shoots 38 special, which is (allegedly) cheaper and easier to get than .357 mag – good for practice, etc. Plus, it’s very quiet if you have a suppressor.

      • The Bearded Hobbit

        Yup, just like my revolvers.

Mrs. Hobbit loves her GP-100 because it is big and ugly. “This can blow your leg clean off”

      • MikeS

The other attraction: also shoots 38 special

This is one of the top reasons I settled on my GP100 when I was handgun shopping…and why I want a rifle in the same caliber.

      • The Bearded Hobbit

        ^^ on both counts.

Also, picked up a 9mm carbine for the same reason.

      • dontreadonme

Love my GP100. It shoots .357 with ease. Much less snappy than my Blackhawk. The extra weight makes a big difference.

      • MikeS

The Marlin is my preferred choice, but with not many options I’m not too picky.

      • The Bearded Hobbit

The Henry is a tube-loader and I want the Marlin because it is a side-loader.

Had the ideal gun years ago and sold it in a moment of weakness.

      • slumbrew

The newer Henry rifles have a side-gate

      • MikeS

You got me thinking again and I went looking…one of the local sporting goods stores has the Big Boy X for $880. Tube and side-load. Looks like a real nice gun.

      • The Bearded Hobbit

        Out of stock.

      • MikeS

Yeah. Noticed that too late. Dammit

    • Spudalicious

      That was pretty wild.

      Uh, that is spectacular.

  12. DEG

    Here we go again. It’s gonna be a lovely Christmas of lockdowns and mandates, and hysteria. On that note;

I just got back from dinner and some drinks at one of the local brewpubs. An annual Christmas event in the town where the brewpub is was cancelled due to Lil Rona Fears. Normally, when the event runs, the brewpub is packed with people. Tonight? The brewpub staffed based on what they normally staff when that event happens. The management figured people would still come out. The brewpub was emptier than what it is on a normal Saturday night. The manager started sending staff home.

    Fuck the Lil Rona Panic.

The WHO’s decision to skip “Nu” and “Xi” did not go unnoticed, generating accusations that the WHO is once again appeasing China, whose president is named Xi Jinping.

Call it the “Pooh Bear” variant.

“It presents mild disease with symptoms being sore muscles and tiredness for a day or two not feeling well,” Coetzee explained. “So far, we have detected that those infected do not suffer the loss of taste or smell. They might have a slight cough. There are no prominent symptoms. Of those infected some are currently being treated at home.”

So the virus is mutating in a way that all viruses mutate, i.e. more contagious and less deadly.

Best Buy issued a statement saying in part: “As an industry we are working with local law enforcement and taking additional security precautions where it makes sense.”

    Just close the stores.

Lecornu, the minister for France’s overseas territories, said in a YouTube video issued late on Friday that certain elected officials in Guadeloupe had raised the question of autonomy, changing its status as an overseas region.

    Interesting.

A Wisconsin police officer resigned after a recording surfaced that showed him engaging in sexual activity with a woman in his department vehicle.

Was he trained to know this is wrong?

This rye blended with maple is good.

    • rhywun

The manager started sending staff home.

      Non-essential workers.

    • MikeS

This rye blended with maple is good.

      Oh? Do tell.

      • UnCivilServant

        Rye bread french toast?

      • MikeS

While that also sounds good, I am disappoint.

      • UnCivilServant

Darnit, now I want french toast. I’m almost out of eggs (I think I have one left) and don’t have loaf bread (just english muffins, pretzel buns, and some brown and serve rolls that I need to do something with)

      • DEG

I had a French Toast burger with egg and bacon at a brewpub in PA last weekend.

The bun was not rye bread.

        It was delicious.

      • DEG

        It’s from hier.

It’s not listed. It’s their Woodcock rye blended with maple syrup.

      • MikeS

        In theory it sounds delicious.

    • Suthenboy

Best Buy issued a statement saying in part: “As an industry we are working with local law enforcement and taking additional security precautions where it makes sense.”

      Just close the stores.

Issue other customers sledge-hammers and knives and let them run out and start smashing windshields and slashing the tires of the cars these scum drive up in. Are the looters going to call the police?

  13. hayeksplosives

Come on, Cowboys!! (OK State, that is.)

The Cowboys are very slightly favored to win, but traditionally OU destroys OK State.

  14. rhywun

The NY Post is angry at Fauci because Biden isn’t authoritarianisming hard enough.

Delaying the travel ban is a terrible, likely deadly, mistake. Stop listening to this man. Stop allowing him to dictate COVID policy.

    I want off this ride.

    • Ozymandias

Maybe this is a NY Post head-fake. Maybe they’re trying to convince the true believers that Fauci needs to go and the only way to do so is to use Fauci’s travel ban reticence combined with his flip-flop to show he’s not “the guy” (or “the science.”) At this point, I wouldn’t care what justification someone used to get that fucking turd flushed.

      • hayeksplosives

If they just discredit Fauci for not COVID panicking hard enough, he will just be replaced by another power-hungry “public servant”.

What we need is a return to governing by law, not decree, and this emergency powers shit needs to be seriously curtailed.

Short of mass protests I don’t know how we are going to get there.

      • rhywun

I don’t think they are that clever. They’re riding the panic train over zOmicron! real hard.

    • hayeksplosives

I have a missionary friend who’s trying to get back from Africa to the states with his wife and three young daughters. He’s been ill with some respiratory problems (non Covid) and the doctors agreed he should go back to the US for further tests and treatment. Last week was particularly rough because they were without power for 8 days.

He’s watching all the overwrought Omicron coverage very closely in hopes that it wouldn’t cancel his family’s trip home. I know they took the first leg of the trip (to Kenya) today, so once they get to Germany I think getting back to the states will go alright. If Germany doesn’t force them into quarantine to prove they’re “doing something”.

People recommending knee-jerk border closures and event cancellations have no idea OR no care about the negative impacts those policies have on real people.

      • Raven Nation

That’s been the problem all along. Regardless of how dangerous covid is/was, it was always treated as the plague to end all plagues. And therefore nothing else matters. My understanding is that we’re already see spikes in things like prostate cancer because annual check ups have not been done.

Tom Sowell: “there are no solutions, only trade offs.”

      • rhywun

And my governor just ordered another end to elective surgeries.

I don’t remember even zOMG Delta! eliciting this much terror-porn. Something else is going on here.

      • Suthenboy

“Something else is going on here.”

        What could it be?

Hmmm. Keep in mind that most of the time things really are just what they appear to be.

      • rhywun

Well, it appears that they are freaking out harder than ever over a “variant” that they are already saying is less harmful than the last one. Something doesn’t add up, is all.

      • hayeksplosives

Yeah, I see what you’re saying. With the “science” (which we are supposed to be following) coming out and saying most people with the new strain have one or two days of muscle aches and fatigue but that’s it, why are they making it like Ebola is now airborne?

      • hayeksplosives

To clarify: it’s not the scientists and doctors freaking out, it’s the government and the MSM.

So it’s about power. And maybe the news channels already had “Worst Variant Evah!” Graphics made up that they were itching to use.

I wonder what China will do. They are supposed to host the Winter Olympics in February but they made bank when the rest of the world panicked over Covid. Decisions, decisions.

      • rhywun

They are supposed to host the Winter Olympics in February

And it will happen too, because everyone will be afraid to say “Hell, no”.

      • Gustave Lytton

What will they do? Japan helpfully provided the answer. No foreign tourist spectators for the games. Either domestic spectators or no audience. Isolation bubble for athlete participants, with actual isolation not the wink wink on your honor Japanese type.

Fire for cause immediately. Which will never happen.

      • hayeksplosives

Totally agreed. I believe the correct phrase for this situation is “then the terrorists have already won.”

Also, the phrase “…due to Islamaphobia fears” is a peculiar one. Does fear of a phobia work like a double negative, so that it means “canceled due to Islam”?

    • Brochettaward

“This is what the Islamic State means. It is a terrorist organization. It has nothing to do with ordinary Muslims. The Toronto school board should be aware of the difference,” Lee said.

State wants to spend $18M to provide services to up to 1200 Afghan refugees.

    https://www.oregonlive.com/politics/2021/11/oregon-lawmakers-seek-extra-18-million-for-refugee-resettlement.html

    Fucking bullshit. Includes these gems

    providing culturally-specific education

Dollars to provide legal services would support refugees arriving under “humanitarian parole” status who need to immediately apply for permanent immigration.

WTF is the state providing legal services for non-citizens? This is not their job. But they’re stealing my tax dollars for this all the same. All the legislators in this story should have their thieving hands chopped off in a culturally appropriate manner.

    • dbleagle

You want your culturally specific education? Go the fuck back to the Taliban, they’ll give it to you. You are in Oregon, which is almost like being in America.* The only thing you could receive on the taxpayer’s dime is American cultural education.**

*I freely admit there are some great parts of Oregon that are truly part of the USA. They are politically irrelevant which is why they are seeking to leave Oregon, and I wish them luck.

** Standard disclaimers that publicly funded education should be eliminated.

      • Brochettaward

Someone who prefers laptops for their portability. There’s obviously a market for them seeing as they keep making them. It can handle top of the line games no problem and should be able to do so for years.

The issue is just the shitty sound.

      • MikeS

You are making a tradeoff for portability. It seems odd to me to complain about screen size and sound quality when buying a laptop. Especially sound…why not get a good pair of headphones or earbuds?

      • Brochettaward

Except I have had laptops that had great sound and a bigger screen. It’s just a few design tweaks.

The industry for some reason seems to be going in the opposite direction – trying to get smaller. So that must be what most people want. I’d rather have a slightly larger laptop and get the superior sound/screen. That’s the point.

        My immediate thought.

Gaming + laptop does not compute for me.

But people watch movies and play games on a five-inch screen to and I don’t understand that either so WTF do I know.

      • Brochettaward

I have no desire to sit in a computer chair all night fucking around.

      • MikeS

I suppose it depends on the games being played? Anything requiring some sort of quickness or hand/eye coordination, I can’t imagine sitting on the couch with a laptop in my lap. Now, a game like Civilization (showing my age?), sure.

I got a “gaming” laptop recently to replace my old Asus.

I chose an MSI Z16 Creator not for gaming, but for high performance, large screen (16”), good sound, and touchscreen.

I’m not a gamer at all but I do love this laptop and would definitely do it again.

      Ugh. It’s morning already?

Goddamnit. That means I have work tomorrow.

    • Gender Traitor

      Good morning, homey et al!

After almost getting lost taking an alternate route home from sis & BIL’s house Thursday to avoid a closed interstate, we had to take alternate routes AGAIN Friday evening getting to and from Metamora, IN, using some roads we’d never heard of, because there was a bridge out in Liberty, IN. Indiana detours are a PITA because they refuse to route you along local streets and roads – they insist on diverting you to another state road, taking you many miles out of your way.

Yesterday I didn’t set foot out of the house.

The vaccinated are more frightened than the unvaccinated. Certainly demonstrates confidence in their choice to get the shot.
