Also, am I the only person who didn’t have serious problems playing Cyberpunk2077?

      • Nephilium

I didn’t have serious problems, but lots of QoL bugs that were irritating and caused issues. I think I had two crash to desktops playing through it (bad, but not unplayable bad). Of course, I played it a year after release.

      • SDF-7

Well, I didn’t have serious problems playing it — but that’s because I never played it, so couldn’t have problems. 😉

      • Rat on a train

I haven’t been able to play it. Something about paying for it first.

      • UnCivilServant

I payed for it many times over given the fact I bought CDPR stock just before it dropped…

      • Sensei

It played OK for me, but some QoL bugs as well.

PC Master Race or Console peasant? I’m actually playing it now (I gave them a year to fix the bugs) and had no problems at launch even though I didn’t play it too much, but I heard the console releases were a disaster.

The concept that the Bill of Rights and other constitutional protections against arbitrary government are inoperative when they become inconvenient or when expediency dictates otherwise is a very dangerous doctrine and if allowed to flourish would destroy the benefit of a written Constitution and undermine the basis of our government. – Supreme Court Justice Hugo Black

“Even Disney didn’t know we were going to drop it like that,” marvels The Book of Boba Fett co-showrunner Robert Rodriguez.

I didn’t know before reading the article just what it is they were “dropping” — and honestly, after the article I still don’t know. Maybe that the titular Mandalorian was really Fett the whole time? Can’t say I care all that much, certainly don’t care enough to give the mouse money for streaming. Maybe if after a year or so they’d make this stuff available for sale on other platforms I might watch some of it — but more likely I’ll just go re-read Heir to the Empire and friends if I need a Star Wars fix that doesn’t suck.

    From the doggeh article:

While it’s a nice sentiment to play your pet’s favorite holiday hits, a new study conducted by speaker manufacturer Sonos warns against listening to them more than 104 times. That’s the threshold for when you’ll get sick of them.

I haven’t watched a minute of The Mandalorian even though I have heard good things about it. After sitting through Jar Jar Binks, I swore I would not watch a second of anything Star Wars.

The only SW thing produced by Disney that I like is Rogue One.

        This is correct.

Happily took the kids to the theater to see TFAthe first weekend it was out.

Left the theater bored and a little confused, wondering how copying A New Hope>/em>could be so bad. Also why would you make Han and Leia be separated?

Never went back to see a “Star Wars” movie again.

      • Gadfly

Instead of copying the original trilogy, they should’ve copied the prequel trilogy.

I know that might be heresy to some, but the prequels have an interesting story arc that would’ve fit much better with where the originals left off than trying to restart everything. A fall from grace story would’ve worked much better than a scrappy underdog story.

      • Rebel Scum

That would follow the rhyming of SW*. And someone competent could fix the narrative (among other) errors of the prequels. (Hire this guy.)

*Instead of the offspring of Han and Leia being randomly evil (with Luke devolving to potential murderer and impotent hermit**…), we could have seen his fall, but without the whiny bitchness that was applied to Anakin.

It’s the only way to watch Babylon 5 nowadays.

      • LCDR_Fish

I’ve got all the DVDs. I’d love to upgrade shows like that and Farscape…but from what I’ve heard…that’s about as good as you’ll get with those masters. Which seems kinda weird when older shows on video can be remastered. Maybe a function of the CGI resolution or something else.

At least the Farscape DVD eps are widescreen.

      • UnCivilServant

There’s something about early CGI that hurts to watch. I can’t quite put my finger on it.

      • Nephilium

They can remaster most of B5, but that just makes the early CGI stand out a lot more (and look worse).

Maybe the reboot will be good…

        /looks at modern trends

        Fuck.

      • Chafed

As I understand it, remastering to current standards would require completely redoing the CGI would be cost prohibitive.

Good for you for getting the DVDs. I hope you got the movies too because those are available anywhere as far as I can tell.

      • one true athena

It’s not just current standards – IIRC the FX were all done in 4:3 to save money, so there’d be nothing there in widescreen.

      • rhywun

Yes, this is why they only remastered ST:TNG, and there will never be a remaster of the later series. They had to re-do all the special effects for TNG, it was enormously expensive, and they decided they couldn’t make a profit on DS9 or VOY.

        I assume it’s the same with B5.

      • Name's BEAM. James BEAM.

        I believe you mean ST:TOS.

And really, they were just cut-scenes for the most part. I’ll bet if you get a bunch of tech-nerds off of 4chan to do it, you could probably re-master all of Babylon 5 for $1.98. Canadian.

      • rhywun

        ST:TNG

There’s an article out there somewhere that goes into it in much more detail.

      • Name's BEAM. James BEAM.

        What a waste.

ST:TNG’s effects were state-of-the-art for the time, whereas Babylon 5’s were, uhm, bargain basement at minimum. They were so close in time to each other, it always befuddled me that the creators of B5 weren’t willing to dump some extra money into the effects compared to ST:TNG.

      • Nephilium

        BEAM:

ST:TNG used a lot more models and practical effects, which from what I read, cost more then the CGI used on B5. Then there was the fact that B5 was bounced around in scheduling, and had a lower budget to begin with (and no Paramount backing). B5 was almost always on the cusp of cancellation. Which is one of the reasons the 4th season is so awesome and the 5th so lackluster – they had heard they were getting cancelled, so rushed through the story to make sure it was all told… then got another season.

I’ve been slowly working my way through a rewatch, and just finished Believers. The episode that smacked people in the face that this was not going to be Star Trek with happy endings for all.

Huh. I didn’t remember David Gerrold wrote that.

      • TARDis

I guess I’ll offend everyone around here. After all the talk about how great B5 was, I tried to watch it several months ago while asking myself why I had not. So we watched it again. About half way through the third episode I said, “I remember now why we didn’t watch this!”. My wife said, “Me too. The acting is awful.” Yup.

      • LCDR_Fish

You can skip S1 and S5 (mostly character stuff in S1). The main arc is S2-S4 – and has a ton of amazing epic stuff – with some filler eps here and there.

“Former President Trump has been accused of anti-Semitism after claiming that Jews in America ‘no longer love Israel,’ and that evangelical Christians love it more.

‘It used to be that Israel had absolute power over Congress and today I think it’s the exact opposite,’ Trump told Israeli journalist Barak Ravid in a clip provided to the Unholy podcast, released Friday.

‘I think Obama and Biden did that,’ the former president continued. ‘Yet in the election they still get a lot of votes from the Jewish people. Which tells you that … the Jewish people in the United States either don’t like Israel or don’t care about Israel.'”

      • Ed Wuncler

That always boggled my mind when I heard him being accused of anti-Semitism. If he hated ((them)) as much as people claimed, why did he let his daughter marry one? TDS took away a lot of people’s ability to think.

      • The Hyperbole

Trump’s not an anti-Semite or a racist, he’s a blowhard, authoritarian, and first class con man. But “his daughter married a Jew’ is meaningless in proving or disproving anti-Semitism, parents have problems with whom their children marry all the time.

      • Ghostpatzer

Sure. I seem to recall that Jared was retained to do some important work in the administration. Doesn’t seem like DJT had much of a problem there.

      • The Hyperbole

That’s kind of my point, if you want to point out all the relations Trump has – personal, business etc, etc, – with the filthy Christ killers it’s obvious he isn’t literally Hitler, but “his daughter married a Jew” is up there with “some of my best friends are black’ in the meaningless dodge category. One can have black friends and still be a racist and one can have a Jewish son-in-law and still be an anti-Semite.

      • Loveconstitution1789

White racists dont have black friends. Unless you mean “friends” like friendface friends, which are usually not friends. Where I come from friends are people you like and trust, like family.

Also you dont need black friends to NOT be a racist. If you think your race is superior than other races, then youre a racist.

      • Loveconstitution1789

I always ask, how is Trump an authoritarian and con-man?

Most of the time I use readers on a granny tether because bifocals suck for shopping or computer work.

      • rhywun

Cool. I literally cannot work with the progressives they built for me. I stare at a computer all day for work and then most of the evening. I need something that works at the usual computer distance that doesn’t require me to stare at the ceiling for 14 hours a day.

      • Name's BEAM. James BEAM.

I should elaborate: they’re a standard monofocal prescription for your eyes — no need to make computer readers out of expensive prog lenses. Their lack of priciness means you can also get fancy-shmancy coatings on them (like blue blockers, assuming those even work) for not much extra. Any local corner-store optometrist should be able to build computer readers, there’s nothing high-tech about ’em.

      • Count Potato

I just use regular prescription readers at normal strength for the computer. I found the “blue blockers” thing definitely made a difference. YMMV.

      • rhywun

*different values of nearsightedness in each eye, to be more precise

    • Mojeaux

      You’ll get used to them.

I’ve had bifocals since I was 11 or so, so I’m not sure of the learning curve.

    • rhywun

I can’t stand mine. Still wearing my old ones. That isn’t working out so great, either.

    • Zwak, All dressed up in his ridiculous seersucker suit

I have bifocals and “computer” glasses (just the reading part). The latter are also safety glasses, so I just wear them in the house at all times, mostly not knocking things over.

Ok….continuing my fridge search. I called AHS and they didn’t have confirmation on door removal by the delivery folks…but the company they said would handle it – I looked them up and every review was 1 star (not a good look).

So as an alternative…if I want to go ahead and get an e-card for Lowes (10% military discount as well….) I can get a credit for around $1650.

Were there any fridge brands to stay away from? I only see LG at Lowes (but that’s because of the basic top freezer design I’m leaning towards).

Like I said, I’d prefer to just stick with a simple top freezer design. If I limit them to ones I know can fit through my front door – ie. 33″ width, I guess I can’t get quite as many cubic feet, but there’s a bit of piece of mind for my simple paranoia under the circumstances. (and maybe the cubic footage winds up around the same if you’re removing the icemaker?)

    • LCDR_Fish

Now there are a lot more options if I look at Bottom Freezer fridge for the same size otherwise and that doesn’t really bug me. Still just GE/LG options based on my size preferences.

      • LCDR_Fish

Although additionally…with one exception, looks like most of those are out of stock so I may need to wait either way.

My fridge is chugging along (and I’m not going anywhere, so I can de-ice periodically) – so maybe best to just take the check and try and order something for when they come in.

      • Fourscore

I just got an LG from Home Depot, top freezer. It’s not as big as I wanted, only 20 CF but they had very few to choose from, except the stainless, which I didn’t want and apparently not many other people wanted either. Had to wait 5 weeks for delivery, delivery measured the door, brought the refrig in sideways with the all doors on. Refrig is only 30″ wide, could have brought it straight in.

    • Sensei

If you are in an area with a local chain or mom and pop appliance shop go that route.

They compete well on price with the chains because they have to do so. And they normally have their own delivery employees. They are much mor motivated to work with you and deal with problems.

      • LCDR_Fish

That’s another idea. I could wait a few more weeks for the check vs the Lowes card. Not familiar with any in the area, but could probably get some recommendations.

    • Scruffy Nerfherder

      Stay away from insignia.

      • LCDR_Fish

        Ok. That’s 1.

    • SandMan

Just now buying a new frig, one thing to keep in mind is you can take the doors off most of them which lets you get them through smaller spaces during installation.

    • Mojeaux

I have it on a questionably reliable source that appliances that have Samsung slapped on them are good.

    • R.J.

Where are you? If you are in DFW I can help get the thing inside your house. Otherwise I must recuse myself. And I prefer LG, I have 13 year old washer and dryers that never skipped a beat, so I have slowly upgraded everything else to LG. I have the LG with the “door in door” which has a huge amount of storage in a standard foot print.

Show me that age and country where the rights and liberties of the people were placed on the sole chance of their rulers being good men, without a consequent loss of liberty? – Patrick Henry

    Bullshit, that would never happen.

OT: Yesterday after work I went by the grocery store to grab a couple steaks thinking that surely my power would be back on by then. Nope. What to do? Well it was around forty degrees and dropping outside and around fifty inside. I wasn’t about to waste a steak so I threw one in my car to sit overnight and cooked the other. Luckily the power came back on around 11PM. When I grabbed it and put it back in the fridge in the morning I thought to myself “Sean would approve.”

Our VP was kind enough to remind us all that vaccination is still a condition of employment.

Did you respond with “We accept your resignation”?

      • kinnath

No. Zoom broadcast. One way only.

  26. UnCivilServant

*sigh* I had this vague memory that there was something waiting in the kitchen. I’d first through it was that I was cooking something. No, I was soaking a bowl to make it easier to scrub clean. What a disappointment.

    Loved the FEE article.
