    Yes.

        That’s right.

        Social Security.

  3. Scruffy Nerfherder

In negotiations last week with Portland Public Schools, the union pitched a plan to give teachers more planning time by converting several school days to teacher planning; cutting two hours of instruction each week for K-8th graders; and swapping one day of in-person instruction in most weeks for largely do-it-yourself learning for high schoolers.

    AKA Chardonnay Days

    • Count Potato

In Portland? Probably something way stronger.

    • Ed Wuncler

You have to grudgingly respect the teacher union’s cajones. They fought to keep our children from going to school last year which stunted their progress, they already get all of the holidays and summer off, and now this bullshit?

They are the epitome of doing less while demanding more.

      • SDF-7

Or in other words, they’re a union.

      • Ed Wuncler

Maybe I’ve been in the private sector for too long but holy fuck, if we pulled half of the shit they did, management would have told us to get the fuck out.

    • hayeksplosives

There shouldn’t have to be negotiations between a public school and its public employees.

They’re both monopolies; no public sector unions!!!

      • Ed Wuncler

As a resident of the People’s Republic of Illinois, I wholeheartedly agree.

      • Yusef the Unclean

        Thanks JFK!

      • hayeksplosives

“The AK-203 is a gas-operated, magazine-fed, select fire assault rifle designed to chamber 7.62×39mm cartridge.”

    That’s just confusing.

    • Drake

      India didn’t go with 5.56 or 5.45? That’s surprising.

      • EvilSheldon

The AK-203 is about the tech level that the Indian army can handle.

India’s small arms procurement is beyond fucked up.

      • Bobarian LMD

The claim on the wiki page is 400-800m effective range.

Not with it firing 7.62 X 39. 300-400 at best.

      • Count Potato

7.62 X 39 is an accurate round, but it’s not often chambered in rifles built for distance.

      • Bobarian LMD

Helluva lot of drop at anywhere near that kind of range.

You’re at GT 20″ of drop at 300 yds out of a 20″ barrel.

It’s a very effective “short” range round but shooting at 800 would be like mortar fire.

    • Rat on a train

It the only way he can get it up.

It’s the standard I Jerked Off With A Nigerian Bodybuilder defense.

      • Bobarian LMD

A corollary to the Chewbacca Defense?

      • Ozymandias

Ah, yes, the ol’ IJOWANB. The criminal defense attorney’s go-to move.
Should work out well for him. Why I – I can’t even count the number of times I’ve used that one.

Seriously, though, what I love about this is he’s trying to harm the credibility of the government’s accusers by suggesting that they were even MORE intimate with him than they’ve admitted!
Therefore showing exactly… how…um… uhhh… yeah. This has to be the stupidest thing I’ve ever heard of in a criminal defense case.

      • Tonio

Now I have to clean my monitor! I owe you an email, Ozy.

What is Smolletts’s strategy? Admitting that he knew the “Nigerian” brothers?

      • juris imprudent

He’s going to go with, he told them how he needed more publicity AND sympathy for his contract negotiations, and then he outlined how a racist/homophobic assault on him would be just the ticket. How was he to know that they would decide to implement that?

      • Rat on a train

Will no one rid me of this lack of publicity?

      • DEG

Probably thinks he or his lawyers can paint them as jilted lovers getting revenge.

“New type of gum has been found to nearly eliminate transmission of the coronavirus by neutralizing the virus in the person’s saliva.

A team of scientists led by Penn State University infused gum with a plant-grown protein and found it ‘traps’ the SARS-CoV-2 virus.

The protein, known as ACE2, prevents the virus from attaching to a host cell in the human body by interacting with SARS-CoV-2’s receptor binding domain – this facilitates virus attachment to the receptor and fusion with cell membrane.”

    • The Other Kevin

I remember working on those at my old job, and feeling very paranoid about someone seeing them, and then me getting fired and potentially arrested.

Closest, I’ll get to someone who looks like that is by toobin.

    • Fourscore

Get a pair of the same shorts for $148. Seems cheap…

    • SDF-7

I just keep thinking “Who’s the creep with the telephoto lens stalking her these days? At what point do you vultures just let people live a life? I know you’re used to royalty across the pond — but this is America… she’s just a private citizen, go be creepy somewhere else.”

      • Tonio

The tabloids who buy those pics create a market. And there are always bottomfeeders who really want someone to pay for that $10,000 plus lens they’ve always wanted.

  10. Rebel Scum

WHY HIM DO ON WAY OUT?

Commies gotta commie. Never mind that there is already court precedent against mandates that he is ignoring. Seems like grounds to have a date with a lamp post be immediately removed from office.

    • rhywun

My inbox might be interesting when I clock in to work tomorrow.

      • Ghostpatzer

I wonder if this will apply to fully remote workers. Magic 8 ball says “most likely”.

      • rhywun

The de Blasio mandate also does not apply to a big sector of workers who are in daily contact with millions of New Yorkers — state employees like MTA workers.

        Because that makes sense.

        What a fucking joke.

  11. DEG

“We were blindsided,” a clearly enraged Wylde said.

At this point, DiBlasio has been mayor long enough that you really can’t be blindsided by anything stupid he decrees.

On Thursday, the cantonal medical services of the cantons of Geneva and Vaud (where the school is located) took a joint decision to quarantine all pupils and staff on the campus for ten days.

On Campus? Can they at least throw a toga party or two?

    • Dr. Fronkensteen

Yes, but they have to call it a BLM protest.

      • Zwak, All dressed up in his ridiculous seersucker suit

        So no mask?

    • SDF-7

Given the short notice and no details on enforcement — if I were in NYC I’d seriously think about just ignoring his stupid bloviations and see if the next Mayor is actually sane.

But then again, I’d never live in NYC so the point is moot.

      • rhywun

        *raises hand*

I am going to ignore his stupid bloviations.

The real question is, is my employer going to ignore it.

    • Rebel Scum

Dishonest cunte is dishonest and cuntey.

      • SDF-7

I think we can add “insufferable” to that. Sure, twit — Sarah Palin (of all people) and Donald Trump are the reason for the obesity epidemic.

Not the food engineered to taste really good for a very short time and have you come back for more… not the government with the starch-heavy Food Pyramid (brought to you by the Iowa Primaries!)… only those naughty people who disagree with you politically.

Here — take this cheese and go wander in the woods for a bit. Ask for STEVE….

    • rhywun

The sneering contempt these types have for lower-class ways is breathtaking.

      • juris imprudent

Well, that’s nothing for the sneering contempt I have for those who think they are my better.

    • EvilSheldon

I don’t think it’s the conservatives who are screeching, “HEALTHY AT ANY SIZE!!!1!” at the top of their lungs…

  12. Rebel Scum

Around 2,000 people, including 1,600 children at the International School of Geneva, will have to quarantine for ten days.

    This justification has holes.

    • Dr. Fronkensteen

      The whole thing is ricola.

  13. Rebel Scum

I am astounded that your career has comprised only of failing up.

Anthony Fauci blasted Fox News and said he was “astounded” that the network did not discipline Lara Logan for comparing him to Nazi doctor Josef Mengele, who worked at Auschwitz during the Holocaust.

“What I find striking is how she gets no discipline whatsoever from the Fox network. How they can let her say that with no comment and no disciplinary action. I’m astounded by that.”

“Calling people Nazis is OUR thing.” ///TheLeft

    • Scruffy Nerfherder

This is Fauci’s weak spot. He’s a raging narcissist. Keep needling that little fucker until he cracks.

      • Tonio

        “she gets no discipline whatsoever”

We found his other weak spot.

      • Scruffy Nerfherder

I bet he likes to be on the other side of that.

      • Tonio

Mistress Chrissie has a program for that!

    • SDF-7

Oh, I figured you’d be talking about Kamala….

    • The Other Kevin

Eventually he’s going to fall out of favor with the press like one of the Cuomo’s and that will be fun to watch.

    • KSuellington

Anyone who seriously says, “I am the science!!!” is on another plane of narcissism and hubris. The clown makes Trump look like a modest and self effacing fellow. Hopefully one day both he and Birx will be viewed with utter scorn for the damage they helped wrought.

  14. Yusef the Unclean

Posting by lantern light, power outages don’t just suck, but my water lines are gonna freeze, I’m not, fortunately, and I can run my stove to cook, this isn’t cool.

    • Sean

      Did yer kitty come back?

      • Yusef the Unclean

Yes, the next afternoon, thanks for asking, she was wet and hungry, but otherwise fine.

    • Count Potato

      Get a kerosene heater?

      • Yusef the Unclean

Too late to get that together, Ill run the taps and hope, power should be back anytime. I can sleep in here with no heat, for a night, but my infrastructure requires power, or it will fail.

      • Name's BEAM. James BEAM.

Taps just need to be put on a slow dribble (trust me, we get -40 nights here sometimes in February, and even when the City flips out about potential water main breaks, they just ask the residents to set their taps a’dribblin’ overnight). No point in using more water than you have to.

    • DEG

      I hate power outages.

Hopefully your power comes back soon.

    • pistoffnick

I’ve got a generator you could borrow, but its two great lakes away from you.

      • Yusef the Unclean

Larf, even if I had one, where would I store it? In my living room?
        64 inside, 12 degree drop

    • Necron 99

I’m looking to install a whole house generator, 20KW and a 500 gallon LPG tank should do it. Froze my ass off last February, don’t want to do that again.

      • EvilSheldon

My folks just got a setup like that. It’s pretty slick.

      • Name's BEAM. James BEAM.

My brother-in-law has a dual-fuel (natural gas and diesel, IIRC) Generac, somewhere in the 25KWh range for his house and greenhouse operation. Automatic failover too. Sweet system, but I have no idea where you could put that here without it either (a) pissing off the other residents of the HOA or (b) getting stolen (although those Gennys are damn big, but where there’s a will . . . ).

      • juris imprudent

We did that because we’re on the ass-end of the utility line (it stops two houses up and a different company comes down the street to there from the other direction). It’s not unusual at all for one end of the neighborhood or the other to be out in bad weather.

      • Ed Wuncler

My wife and I have been talking about getting one of those generators that is connected to your natural gas line. We live in the Midwest and we tend have crazy snow and summer storms.

  15. Rebel Scum

    And?

Conservatives are aggressively building their own apps, phones, cryptocurrencies and publishing houses in an attempt to circumvent what they see as an increasingly liberal internet and media ecosystem.

Why it matters: Many of these efforts couldn’t exist without the backing of major corporate figures and billionaires who are eager to push back against things like “censorship” and “cancel culture.” …

Aside from social networks, conservatives are pushing to create alternatives to other tech tools and communication platforms. …

The bottom line: Conservative media has been a powerhouse for a long time, but this phase of its expansion isn’t just about more or louder conservative voices — it’s about building an entire conservative ecosystem.

    • Ed Wuncler

Conservatives: Social media leans too Left.

The Left: If you don’t like it, go build your own.

Conservatives. We’ve built our own shit now.

The Left: ZOMG, this is a travesty!

      • juris imprudent

Just wait for the advertising revenue to dry up on those.

    • Count Potato

      “censorship” and “cancel culture.”

      Nice use of quotes, asshole.

      • rhywun

Yeah, that got a chuckle out of me.

  16. Certified Public Asshat

Covid news at my house: wife and 3 kids all positive in the last week with mild cases. I’m negative.

I tested negative yesterday morning when I was actually feeling bad. I had a sore throat going before bed Saturday night and then slept terribly as my wife coughed. Yesterday throat was sore head ache, and achy lower back. I assumed I tested too early and started my stash of dog heartworm medication and doxycyline. Everyone slept well last night and this morning I felt normal.

Took another test just to see (our local library is now handing out rapid at home tests) and I am still showing negative. I tested my daughter who was first sick last Monday and she is still showing positive. *shrugs*

    • DEG

Everyone slept well last night and this morning I felt normal.

Excellent. Hopefully everyone is well and normal soon.

    • Nephilium

My rapid test came back negative when I got tested a couple weeks back, never got the results of the PCR test, and the testing company told me I would just need to go get tested again. Over a week later… when I no longer had symptoms.

Girlfriend’s rapid test came back positive a couple days later. She’s almost better and counting down until she’s allowed to leave the house again.

      • Certified Public Asshat

From what I understand (and I’m probably wrong) rapid tests are better at testing for actual contagiousness. PCR will let you know if you have COVID, but you probably have a mild case/recovering or just not necessarily a spreader. With that explanation, it makes sense the government prefers PCR for maximum panic.

      • Bobarian LMD

The error rate of the PCR vs. the random incidence of COVID makes it immoral to force someone to take the test without symptoms.

Your at least as likely to randomly test falsely as you are to have the ‘VID without symptoms.

      • Toxteth O'Grady

        What about a long-term asymptomatic N = 1? Asking for some friends. 😉

    • Toxteth O'Grady

Cuz the old uns died out?

      • grrizzly

Probably they did. Like everyone in this photo. It’s also my partner’s lock screen.

    Penn Swimmer smashes records.

Thomas won the 1650 at the Akron Zippy Invitational by 38 seconds over her teammate. Her results in all three races set new Penn records along with meet and pool records. Friday night in the 500 free, Thomas won the race by 12 seconds; she won the 200 free by seven seconds.

Thomas’ current best times racing for the women’s team:

    200 free: 1:41.93

    500 free: 4:34:06

    1650 free: 15:59.71

Thomas’ best times racing as a male the first three years at Penn:

    200 Free … 1:39.31

    500 Free … 4:18.72

    1,650 Free … 14:54.76

    • Ozymandias

It’s hysterical. Athletically speaking, I’m an old man, but if I changed genders my mind about my sex tomorrow, I’m pretty certain I would instantly be competitive for medals in all kinds of strength and grappling sports.
And people are cheering this insanity on.

    • whiz

      Also:

      NCAA women’s swimming records:

      200 free: 1:39:10 (Missy Franklin)

      500 free: 4:24:06 (Katie Ledecky)

      1650 free: 15:03:31 (Katie Ledecky)

So Lia’s best times as a male are better than the NCAA records in the longer events, but not as a female.

      • Certified Public Asshat

But they got slower, that proves something.

      • Translucent Chum

She’s going to have to put in extra work to beat the greatest U.S womens swimmer of all time.

      • whiz

Yes, CPA, it is interesting that they got slower. But that still doesn’t mean that some advantage remains.

      • Certified Public Asshat

        I agree with you.

      • Bobarian LMD

        that proves something.

She doesn’t have to try as hard to win?

      • Chipwooder

Point is, this guy was a decent male swimmer who never ever would have threatened any NCAA records. As a woman, yeah, not far off the record time in multiple events.

Cause, y’know, we’re talking about a man here.

San Francisco Supervisor Rafael Mandelman. who is responsible for the ordinance, said in a recent interview that the suspension is intended to help out legal cannabis retailers who are trying to compete with illegal dealers and a spike in theft — both issues that appear to be plaguing the city.

The tax, a 1% to 5% citywide tax on cannabis businesses, was approved by voters in November 2018 and was slated to go into effect on Jan. 1, 2022. This new ordinance, which passed last Tuesday, suspends the tax through Dec. 31, 2022…

The weekend after Thanksgiving, large groups of thieves hit a handful of pharmacies and marijuana dispensaries in Oakland. Local police reported that the mobs in Oakland fired 175 shots during the incidents, forcing all officers to pull back to safe locations.”

Re this from the a.m. links:

Black couple SUE real estate agency after their Bay Area home was valued at just $995,000 – but $1.42m when they removed all photos and asked a white friend to pose as its owner for viewing with second expert.

    https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-10278121/A-black-couple-erased-home-value-went-nearly-500-000.html

Ummm … asking price ain’t selling price … realtors routinely brag about how they sold houses for hundreds of thousands over asking, as if routinely underpricing the asking price is something to be proud of.

That being said, when my SIL sold her house, we had to talk her out of having anything in the house that would show she is black. The only thing she finally kept was a little African stick figurine, on the theory that a white liberal might have that in their house. It ain’t that complicated – clear out all the family photos, use bland inoffensive paint colors, and get the fuck out of the house when potential buyers come by so the realtor can doing their job unhindered by your noob mistakes.

So white homeowners are having their homes over-assessed and having to pay out the wazoo in property taxes.

Our residence is appraised at way under the current market value, due to skyrocketing housing prices and a limit of 10% annual increases in assessments. Got in just before things went nuts.

So my daughter has been sent home from school for a second round of quarantine, but things are different now. Previously, if a kid was sent home for supposedly being exposed, you could have a test done and the kid could return if the test were negative.

Now, however, the school handout describing the policy says “regardless of testing”. EXCEPT, there’s one exception. If the kid is vaccinated, then no quarantine needed! Which makes absolutely no sense because the vaccines don’t prevent someone from carrying and spreading the virus. It’s nothing more than another attempt to make life harder for those of us who choose not to make our kids virtual lab rats.

Hell, my youngest kid didn’t believe me that the “vaccine” doesn’t vaccinate anyone, it’s like a super strength Dayquil, except with the added benefit of having a non-zero chance of killing you every time you take it or the boosters. Didn’t believe a bunch of other inconvenient facts I pointed out, either. Like, how the CDC isn’t good people who love us, it’s a bureaucracy with an agenda and incentives that isn’t about helping us.

Asked me to send them links about some of it. I said, you’re computer literate, look it up yourself if you think what I said was beliefs rather than facts.

      • DEG

How long did they take to process the permit application?

I remember when Act 95 (I think that was it? Am I confusing the Act number with the year it passed? I can’t remember) passed Philly took its good-old time processing applications.

Philly wasn’t the only county that drug its feet after Act 95 passed. I remember other counties during the same (Delaware and Bucks come to mind). I remember some folks threatening to sue to Bucks County sheriff over his delays, and bam, all of a sudden his office is processing permit applications really quickly.

“People Get Microchips Implanted That Include Vaccine Records Amid New COVID Restrictions

People in Sweden are increasingly seeking to have microchips inserted into their bodies that contain their COVID-19 vaccination records, according to local media outlets.

A video recently shared by Aftonbladet, a Stockholm-based daily newspaper, showed one individual having a microchip inserted near the thumb on his right hand, a procedure that was performed quickly.

The paper’s video also featured other people who said they had had the microchips inserted in their hand, arm or chest. Those individuals then used their smartphone to detect the chip’s presence or swiped the portion of their body that contained the chip over door sensors to demonstrate how it worked…”

There was a piece of paper on my doorstep this morning. When leaving, I put it inside the door and headed off to work. I assumed it was mine, nope. Apparently one of my neighbors went to a range over the weekend and rented/shot a handgun. Well, technically two…as the receipt listed a husband and wife.

      • Sean

They rented a .380. I’ll worry when they rent a real gun. ?

      • Animal

Hey. The .380 is a perfectly adequate round.

If you’re defending yourself against a mouse. Or an overly aggressive cockroach.

      • Gustave Lytton

Neither .45ACP nor 9mm Luger started WWI.

      • kinnath

On target is more important that caliber.

My daughter was far more accurate with .380 than 9 mm. So that’s what I bought her.

      • Animal

Oh, no argument, funnin’ aside. Mrs. Animal frequently carries one, a Ruger LCP, because it fits her tiny little hands. Although up here out in the sticks she totes a .357.

Also improvements in ammo have made a huge difference. I’ve seen some interesting results even out of some newer .32ACP loads.

I still like my .45s for myself, though.

      • EvilSheldon

True. But that depends on the gun, too. A lot of people buy .380ACPs (and .32s, etc.) thinking that a little gun with a little cartridge will be easy to hit with, and that’s frequently not the case. Many .380 pistols have some combination of lousy controls, lousy sights, lousy triggers, and since most of them are straight-blowback, they kick a lot more than you’d expect.

    • Gustave Lytton

Renting a husband and a wife along with a pistol? Kinky.
