*Much of this story is in the alt text, Hover,*

11/06/21

The day dawned, bright and clear, it was going to be an unseasonably warm day, highs up to 60, windy as all get out, so, let’s go play!

I got my broken ass out of bed aboot 11 and ended up at the course at Noon for ten holes or so, my doctor said if I can play without pain, I should do it, so.

#3,The hardest hole, par is good, the basket is by the street over there,

Standing on the #4 Teepad, looking North at the #3 basket, such color!

This is looking at #4, you must go around the Emperor tree, slice around that next one to the right, and then one more big tree you can’t see from here. We use this for our Closest to the pin game, small coin, but competitive. The hole is only 230′ now, (we had to move it for safety) but it will punish you, We love it.

Tough hole, Beautiful color

Then I remembered Gunslingers tip aboot the Sequoia in Manistee, Thanks Bro! anywierd, off I go, all 3.7 miles up the street, and after missing the entrance three times, I parked and How Cool!

Some color on the way

Old Brick house, I have no other data….

Just real pretty

Sign

Standing above the crowd

Inside up

A lawn, with the Sequoia dominating the background

A nice overlook of the Big lake

As I was looking out I saw a Laker in the distance, too far for my phone, so no big, I went back to play more golf, on the way I stopped at ,get this, Man Made Lake,

OK

Of course being the scatterbrainiac I am, I was diverted by some Dunes, pretty cool, let’s see.

Generic Dunes, looking at man made

Nice dunes Big lake

Right aboot here I heard a Laker horn and I’m like shit! I run back to Kia van and blaze down to the parking lot in town , then run down to the channel and what do I get? Yeah!

The Manitowoc

Turning and burning

One big ass ship,

Back to Man Made, it’s a cool little lake, I go past it every day, small and gentle, a nice place for a beach scene, lets see,

Log

Sun/lake thingy

Water log

After that, I ran over to the course, a mile maybe, and played another 5 holes, then I remembered, the Stepford Village,

Stepford #1

Stepford #2 and #2,1

Undercover Kia Cam

Vacation homes

So pretty

Overall an amazing day, I blame it on Gunslinger(Hell yes Bud) I got out and did some things before the dark times come to to Michigan, I love it here, mostly.

The entire trip took 4 hours and 14 miles total, I spent more time organizing this mess, LOL!

Enjoy!

    Nice pictures!

Firsting on a Yusef post is bad juju.

      • The Bearded Hobbit

Being a dick is bad juju, too.

      • Brochettaward

I am the savior of all humanity. The Bearer of The First That Will Change Everything. Was Jesus a dick when he beat a group of town elders with switches from the desert? No, he was doing the work of The Great Firster.

      • TARDis

Shouldn’t a woman be the bearer of the first? It’s only polite. Plus it’s better for procreation.

      • Brochettaward

The Great Firster saw what happened with the idolatrous worship of the Virgin Marry. He was not going to allow a women to be in that position again. But the mechanics of carrying The First That Will Change Everything are a bit different from giving birth to baby Jesus. I am both The Bearer and The First Of All Firsters. The precise nature and form of The First has not yet been revealed to anyone but myself.

  2. The Gunslinger

Awesome photos Yusef. My office is right across the street from a lake that is connected to Lake Michigan. The Manitowoc ship comes up the lake to unload during the summer. I can stand up at my desk and see the ships going past a few times per month.
Thanks for sharing these, it’s super cool that we have a Sequoia tree in Michigan!

    • rhywun

My office cube looks out windows facing the Hudson from NJ and once or twice a week we see a monster cruise ship float by. Set against the buildings of Manhattan it’s shocking how huge those ships are; like ten or fifteen stories above the water.

Thank you for the tip GS! I do love it up here, time for Ice golf,

  3. rhywun

    Fun, thanks!

‘#3,The hardest hole, par is good, the basket is by the street over there,’

This looks so much like par four in Rosedale Park (just a couple blocks away from the original/in the gas station Oklahoma Joe’s/Joe’s KC in Wyandotte County it’s scary.

The only difference being the trees in the fairway.
Rest assured, the fairway is narrow and only the skilled survive consistently…I survived about 30-40 percent of the time.

    • Trigger Hippie

      Oops, misthread…

      For Bob, obviously.

      • Yusef drives a Kia

#3 is only 335′ however the double mandos make for a tight tunnel shot, miss a mando and you’ll be lucky to double bogie.
        Thanks TH!

    Cool pictures.

FUCK YOU TREE! Got a laugh from me.

Looks like a lot of fun.

I could imagine you making an accompanying video of your adventure in the style of apetor.

I just learned that apetor died on the 27th of November while looking up something to link to for this comment.

I’m sorry to derail your post so early with a tail of doom. It was not my intention.

apetor was 57. His last video is titled ‘I am Not Dead, I am 57 Today’. He is now dead. He was 57.
His eccentric joie de vivre was whimsical yet deeply inspirational. Skål, Mr. Eckhoff.

Yufus I enjoy your adventures also. Please do not die. Tall Cans.

I’ll try to stick around a while longer,
      Thanks Limey

Nice. Here in most places in NJ there would be utility poles in most of those.

Popped up in my YouTube feed. Essentially since he is foreign, but speaks good Japanese he strikes up lots of conversations. So I just jumped on this one because of the high view count. It’s nice because he doesn’t have that “exploring mars” vibe so many videos do.

This gal is fit and man does she work.

      • Gustave Lytton

I’ve watched that! I didn’t even realize he was a foreigner.

      • Gustave Lytton

It’s light season! And I’ve been watching the shit out of walking around videos.

      • Sensei

After a few minutes you can hear it. Late in the video she mentions how good he speaks. He’s not a native English speaker either.

The nice thing is the conversations he has are relatively easy to follow.

      • Brochettaward

[blockquote]This gal is fit and man does she work.[/blockquote]

I would and then never call her again.

  7. UnCivilServant

I love getting a phone call late on a friday saying “Hey, there’s a zero-day vulnerability in a commonly used component, we have to scour our installbase to see if we’re impacted, even in our off the shelf stuff”.

    Curse you, log4j

    • UnCivilServant

On the plus side, the vast majority of my realm is safe. Only one item that might need remediation, and it’s in a spot where the outside world can’t poke it without first getting a foothold in the datacenter.

I’m stuck on the call to see if they’ll mandate I do something tonight.

    • rhywun

      Three-day weekend. Nobody’s gonna bother me. ?

    • slumbrew

Already got pulled into that last night. Fortunately, my “Java is bullshit” attitude has worked in my favor and I don’t have anything to deal with.

      • UnCivilServant

Sadly, I can’t act upon that stance.

        *glares at PeopleSoft*

At least they didn’t use the module in question.

      • slumbrew

Lots of people in the company are scrambling to deal with it – including customer-facing stuff. I’ve just been spared, personally.

      • UnCivilServant

I’ve been mostly spared, and I’m getting off the call now.

4.5 hours, not the worst random friday “something done broke” call.

      • slumbrew

We had a bunch of dumb “you need to confirm with the vendor that this is OK!” requests.

I maintain I don’t need to confirm with the “vendor” that our DNS software is not vulnerable – I should start handing out this handy flowchart:

Is it written in Java? — NO —> then it’s not vulnerable to that, or any other, Java bug.

I don’t even need a ‘YES’ branch for my stuff.

      • UnCivilServant

At least the people running this item accepted our word on what was what with our stuff.

      • Gustave Lytton

We had a bunch of dumb “you need to confirm with the vendor that this is OK!” requests.

U of Minnesoda -Duluth Bulldogs Men’s Hockey are getting creamed by the U of Denver.

    5-0 in the second period.

    • pistoffnick

They are NOT looking like the #1 ranked team.

    • whiz

The fall of the Wisconsin men’s team is sad. When I was in grad school there, they were winning national championships; now they are the dregs of the B1G. At least the women are #1.

  9. mikey

    Thanks, Yusuf. These are fun.
Is the sequoia man made? Well, planted by a person anyway. Thought they were only in the Left Coast.

    • Yusef drives a Kia

Yes mikey it is man made, a guy brought 6 saplings from NorCal, and planted them, 2 survived, as you can see.

      • Fourscore

That was my question, too. I was surprised to see a MI sequoia, thinking I must have skipped that day in biology.
        Are those houses in Manistee?
        Thanks, Yusef

      • Yusef drives a Kia

Vacation homes for the well off, mostly nice people, but they left for the season, it is quiet again.

      • kinnath

A friend of mine, who recently passed away, had a cypress planted in his front yard — in Iowa.

Tree is still there, friend is not.

      • Yusef drives a Kia

How about Sage? I thought it was a desert plant, nope, it’s native up here, pretty plant.

      • dbleagle

When we owned a house in SoCal in the late 1990’s we planted a cork oak. Looking at Googleearth it is still there and getting pretty dang big. Hopefully whomever is living there realizes what they have.

    #3,The hardest hole

If you’re a course designer, which hole is the biggest dick move to make the hardest hole?

    • Yusef drives a Kia

Setting a basket close to a hillside or defile, and water carries

  12. Chipping Pioneer

What is the big lake? Michigan?

    • pistoffnick

Superior! It’s right there in the name!

      • UnCivilServant

        So, where’s Lake Inferior?

      • Name's BEAM. James BEAM.

        All the rest of them.

    • Yusef drives a Kia

Yes Michigan, we call it that because of the thousands of fricking lakes, rivers and bodies of water up here

  13. commodious spittoon

Bad movies thread part this: Terminator 3. I actually really like this movie. There’s some great scenes, and the ending is poignant.

    • commodious spittoon

      The terminatrix is pretty hot

    • rhywun

Good choice. Everyone hates it and I don’t.

  14. Hyperion

Hey, y’all. How y’all doin? Y’all still around here? Democracy Joe didn’t shut you down yet? Y’all did know that Democracy Joe, the greatest president of all time, is trying to save democracy?

    • Yusef drives a Kia

      What democracy?

      • Hyperion

Ask the democrats, the definition has changed since yesterday.

      • JaimeRoberto (shama/lama/ding dong)

        Our Democracy.

  15. Hyperion

Hey, Yusef, you ever seen some of the Lebanon Cedars down here in PA and MD? They are truly impressive, real beauties of trees.

    • Yusef drives a Kia

never been that way, sounds nice enough, Those are impressive trees

    • Chafed

I want to work in #2’s office.

      • slumbrew

Downside – Seth, from IT, also sits on those stools sans culottes

      • Hyperion

Y’all is a bunch of perverts. Why are you not focusing on helping the best president of all time to save democacy?

      • slumbrew

I thought Warty was the President of Time

      • Hyperion

If Warty was the president of Time or even of Space, let alon both, he’d be here right now to lay claim.

      • Chafed

I’m willing to take my chances.

  16. Chafed

MikeS if you are out there, Eddie Trunk is playing 3 hours of AC/DC tonight.

I’m watching SALT. I just don’t buy Angelina Jolie as some sort of action star.

    • slumbrew

Mr. & Mrs. Smith is fun.

      Wanted also had its moments.

      • Chafed

I enjoyed Mr. & Mrs. Smith. By my memory there wasn’t a ton of action scenes with her and what there was involved gun play. In SALT, there is plenty of gunfire but there is a hell of a lot of hand to hand with guys twice her size. There is just no way her slight frame will allow her to deliver any serious blow to a 200 pound man.

      • Chafed

By way of comparison, Anchorman just came on. I find Will Ferrell’s action scenes more plausible.

      • slumbrew

        Brick Tamland:
Yeah, I stabbed a man in the heart!

        Ron Burgundy:
I saw that! Brick killed a guy! Did you throw a trident?

        Brick Tamland:
Yeah, there were horses, and a man on fire, and I killed a guy with a trident!

        Ron Burgundy:
Brick, I’ve been meaning to talk to you about that. You should find yourself a safehouse or a relative close by. Lay low for a while, because you’re probably wanted for murder.

      • Chafed

One of the best bits of dialogue in the movie.

      • slumbrew

ISTR they did better with Jen Garner in “Peppermint” – they (mostly?) spared us the idea of her kicking anyone’s ass and just had her shooting dudes in the face.

      • Chafed

I would watch her reading the phone book for an hour and a half.

  18. one true athena

“man made lake” cracks me up. I think the Simulation designer forgot to give it a name.

aw, that Sequoia! awesome. A few years back we took a little sapling (they sold them at the gift shop at Sequoia NP) and I potted it. It lived a little while, grew a little, and then it died. I kept it in the pot for another year, hoping that it was just… dormant, or would sprout off the root, or something, but no, it was dead. Bummer.

    • slumbrew

They’re surprisingly finicky for something that gets that big.

    • Brochettaward

Nothing ever really dies. It just transcends this reality and enters the First Realm.

    • rhywun

      ? Lowered Expectations ?

I heard NYC dropped grades entirely.

I love the gibberish about “a new kind of learning”. Holy crap this is not going to end well.

      • Fourscore

For many of us failing is also a way of learning. Reality is a sumbitch.

“Yeah, I dropped outta that chem course, the prof didn’t like me and I can take History again next semester, maybe it won’t be an 8 o’clock class”

“What, I gotta repay those loans?”

      • rhywun

Yeah, failing architecture studio my freshman year taught me the valuable lesson that I didn’t want to become an architect, or more importantly that I should not become one.

      • Fourscore

Things like that encouraged me to get a Liberal Arts degree.

      • Stinky Wizzleteats

As long as they keep the no grades nonsense out of the engineering schools.
