Friday Morning Links

Sad.

What kind of fakakta plan was this? Just play your home games in one empty stadium. You don’t need to do it in a second one. Liverpool advanced to the final of the League Cup by beating Arsenal into submission. They’ll face Chelsea later next month. Nothing happening in the Southern Hemisphere worth commenting on. They won’t get my attention.  It’s Divisional Playoff weekend. Should be some great games. And that’s sports.

“How you say, Stoo-pid?”

This is a pretty pointless lawsuit. I’d love to see this assclown get taken down a peg, but this is likely going nowhere.

Oh, for the love of… This is just retarded. Also, I wonder when one of them will come out as having transitioned into a Reese’s Pieces (with apologies to The Bee). Or would a single one be a Reese’s Piece? Well, whatever. Like I said, this whole thing is tarded.

When your entire plan blows up in your face. And sadly, they’ll just double down and the locals will bleat their approval.

I’m shocked, shocked! Well not really shocked. This always happens when the government gives a shitload of money away in order to placate those it’s stealing from.

Yeah, why hasn’t this happened yet? The other case has been adjudicated and it’s no longer evidence. Give him his shit back and let him do with it as he pleases.

“Don’t move in on our scam!” You want to scam people, get a government license to do so. That’s the lesson here.

Vaya con Dios

A Texas legend has passed. Go easy, big man.

Remember “Video Killed The Radio Star”? Well, this ain’t that, but it’s a true statement about the artist. Enjoy it, though. It’s a great song.

And enjoy your Friday and this weekend, friends.

The M&Ms thing is mindbogglingly stupid. Makes me think that all marketing people are 13

    • AlexinCT

They are woke and stupid college majors that have been indoctrinated into thinking this stuff is what good people believe. In short: they are some of the morons you could imaging mother nature has not caught up to and Darwinized yet.

    • sloopyinca

Nah. A group of 13 year olds would have given them tits. This is from woke dickheads in their late 20s to early 30s.

      • Nephilium

13 year old boys, yes. 13 year old girls would have done something different, like work in the holiday colored M&M’s into commercials.

      • Zwak, All dressed up in his ridiculous seersucker suit

        25yo girls.

        Social media interns.

      • trshmnstr the terrible

Same group that is fucking up the legal department, too.

Speaking of, my department head, perhaps unintentionally, dropped some interesting information yesterday about how they view diversity in legal. He hinted that they had considered laying off non-diverse people in my department and hiring diverse replacements, but the talent loss would be too extreme. They were afraid of pissing off the current team and completely catering morale. Too late, fuckos! *sends out another resume*

      • Chafed

That’s awful. Is the department head oblivious to the obvious lawsuits that have resulted?

      • juris imprudent

Department head of legal department? yoke’s on you!

      • trshmnstr the terrible

Department head has a lack of a filter sometimes. He doesn’t think about how he’s describing things and how it comes off. I don’t doubt they discussed the lack of viability of firing all the white guys and how that creates tension with the fact that diversity is now the legal department’s #1 stated priority.

What’s unclear is whether the idea of firing all the white guys was brought up as a hypothetical solution presented hyperbolically as an extreme measure that wasn’t viable or whether they seriously considered it and decided not to proceed. Either way, it was a pretty major foot in mouth moment that he didn’t even realize happened.

It’s not like I haven’t been looking around anyway, but some of the urgency had gone away because covid vaccine stuff had cooled off and diversity stuff had taken a back seat to real issues. This was a good reminder that those things haven’t completely gone away and they’ll gladly can me the instant they can find a gay black nonbinary that can replace me.

I live about 2 miles from a giant Mars plant – so I know lots of people who work there.

They still say the corporate culture is very conservative at the plant – no vax mandates for example. But…

With the acquisition of Wrigley, most of the management people were moved to Newark. And the company is headquartered in McLean, VA – right next to DC. I assume their corporate leadership is becoming woke just because of their location.

      • AlexinCT

So you saying that Mars product are soon to start tasting like ass?

  2. AlexinCT

“I’m shocked, shocked! Well not really shocked. This always happens when the government gives a shitload of money away in order to placate those it’s stealing from.”

If you had gone of the premise that just like in the past this shit was never about helping anyone but the crooks in government and their buddies steal tax payer lucre, this revelation would neither be surprising nor unusual.

Government is at best a necessary evil. The bigger it gets, the more corrupt and evil the people running it get.

    • Fourscore

Somehow Unintended Consequences also seem to be the norm. There has to be a collusion between those passing out the money to those able to do a work around. There just has to be.

      • AlexinCT

Fascism came into being because old time marxist realized that putting people loyal to the cause but lacking in the necessary expertise would seriously negatively hamper the top down agenda – especially the economic one – and make the whole thing unsustainable, so they came up with the idea of having the state pick the winners and losers in the private sector using a legal system that would give the whole thing a veneer of legitimacy. We keep hearing about how capitalism is bad, but there is no capitalism going on in the western world. What we have is a new form of fascism – they dropped the nationalist focus of fascism for the international focus of marxism, for example – that is as crony capitalism by the people that want pure marxism.

Our new fascist system is all about growing government power so government can better work at picking winners and losers. In the process those in government and those connected to them, along with a lot of crime organizations, will massively rob the productive section of the country paying taxes.

I doubt Rittenhouse has any legal claim to that gun. It was owned by his friend legally and constructively. The arrangement saved both of them from any straw purchase charges, but it seems like the gun should be returned to Dominic Black and not Rittenhouse.

    • sloopyinca

The gun belonged to Rittenhouse. That was determined in the Black plea deal.

      • Not Adahn

The gun belongs to the state, since only the state may legitimately use violence.

      • Compelled Speechless

They may also – and frequently do – use illegitimate violence with absolutely no consequences to any of the government actors. See: literally everything that the FBI/CIA do. Israel world #1 in daily COVID cases per capita

The numbers comparing each country’s seven-day running average put Israel at the top, Prof. Eran Segal of The Weizmann Institute said.

But Segal noted it was likely that Israel was not truly the country with the highest infection rate. Rather, he attributed the figures to Israel being a leading country in the number of tests performed each day, relative to its population size.

Israel is followed in the highest daily cases worldwide ranking by Mongolia, Peru, Canada and Georgia.

    We’re still doing it right!

See single land tax is better no need for an IRS

      • robc

Nah, someone will have to value the land and collect the tax.

It is better, but not necessarily for that reason. Although the number of IRS employees will drop dramatically. Especially if they use locals for valueing.

    • Ownbestenemy

Well according to the government, all black people will not be able to view their tax returns cause they dont have an ID to upload. Also, persons in rural areas won’t be able to upload said picture cause fax machines don’t have the dpi and resolution and that is all they have.

      • Pope Jimbo

That is the beauty of facial scans! You don’t need any ID. Just let them scan your face and you can do everything!

Wait a minute…. Houston we have a problem

Groundbreaking research conducted by Black scholars Joy Buolamwini, Deb Raji, and Timnit Gebru snapped our collective attention to the fact that yes, algorithms can be racist. Buolamwini and Gebru’s 2018 research concluded that some facial analysis algorithms misclassified Black women nearly 35 percent of the time, while nearly always getting it right for white men. A subsequent study by Buolamwini and Raji at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology confirmed these problems persisted with Amazon’s software.

Late last year, the federal government released its own damning report on bias issues in face recognition algorithms, finding that the systems generally work best on middle-aged white men’s faces, and not so well for people of color, women, children, or the elderly. The federal government study concluded the rates of error tended to be highest for Black women, just as Buolamwini, Gebru, and Raji found.

      • AlexinCT

I will only accept this from the IRS if they change the requirement from fascial scans to dick pics…

Party like a Sumerian: reinterpreting the ‘sceptres’ from the Maikop kurgan

The Bronze Age Maikop kurgan is one of the most richly furnished prehistoric burial mounds in the northern Caucasus. Its excavation in 1897 yielded a set of gold and silver tubes with elaborate tips and decorative bull figurines. Interpretations of these tubes include their use as sceptres and as poles to support a canopy. Re-examination of these objects, however, suggests they were used as tubes for the communal drinking of beer, with integral filters to remove impurities

      • Scruffy Nerfherder

Pfizer said it did not identify any safety concerns with the 3-microgram vaccine doses in children 6 months to 4 years old.

Now why would they do that?

Particularly after they flat out lied about Maddie de Garay in the teenager trials. Nobody at the CDC or the FDA will answer any questions about her or how Pfizer described her paralysis from the vaccine as “abdominal pain.”

    • Scruffy Nerfherder

This is about getting Pfizer on the childhood vaccine schedule.

That provides them with a permanent liability shield.

I will put money down that if it is added to the schedule, Comirnaty will suddenly become available in the US as they will no longer need the liability protection of the EUA versions.

  20. Pope Jimbo

Enjoy some public health official tears.

Meanwhile, CentraCare’s increasingly desperate pleas for mask mandates have fallen on deaf ears.

“We are all frustrated, beyond frustrated,” said Dr. Kim Tjaden, a family physician with CentraCare who asked St. Cloud-area leaders to implement a temporary mask mandate during a virtual meeting Jan. 7. Among those present: mayors of St. Cloud and Waite Park, as well as county leaders and city council members.

But no mayors would pass a citywide mask mandate, even temporarily. They cited troubles with enforcement or an anticipated lack of support from council members, even as most other major metropolitan areas in Minnesota implemented some form of mandate. Those cities included Minneapolis, St. Paul, Duluth and Rochester.

St. Cloud is the 4th biggest city in the state and is about an hour and a half from the Twin Cities.

    • Pope Jimbo

      Moar quality whining:

St. Cloud Mayor Dave Kleis said he does not believe it is his role, or the city’s, to implement mask mandates or other pandemic regulations.

“We talked, and I said it would be a much better approach if we were all united — the business community, the cities, the counties, the nonprofits — and have a very strong ask and urging for folks to do that,” he said.

“I believe there is better compliance when you can come together as a community and ask people to to help with the health directives for a period of time.”

      Local health care leaders disagree.

“It’s less about the enforcement of the rule. It’s more about setting the level of expectations that we are all in this together,” Morris said. “And then we hold each other accountable to those community behaviors because they are in the public interest.”

      • Fourscore

    Democracy dies in Appalachia.

“I cannot support such a perilous course for this nation when elected leaders are sent to Washington to unite our country, not to divide our country,” he argued.

“Let this change happen in this way, and the Senate will be a body without rules,” Manchin warned.

“We’ve changed the rules,” in the past, Manchin said. “But we changed them with the rules. We didn’t break the rules to change the rules. But all of a sudden now we just can’t do it anymore. Just got to blow it up.”

    Put it all on Death

Now, two years later, the U.S. has confirmed more than 69 million COVID-19 cases, and 859,000 deaths, the highest in the total for any country, according to data from Johns Hopkins University. And the nation, despite the wide availability of highly effective vaccines and novel treatments, is experiencing its most significant surge on record due to the highly transmissible omicron variant and tens of millions of eligible Americans remaining unvaccinated.

    ——-

Two years into the pandemic, federal data shows that hundreds of thousands of Americans are still testing positive for the virus every day, and more than 1,600 others are dying from COVID-19.

In the last month alone, there have been more than 17.1 million confirmed COVID-19 cases, and 44,700 reported virus-related deaths. In addition, more than a year into the U.S. domestic vaccine rollout, 62 million eligible Americans who are over the age of 5, about 20% of that group, remain completely unvaccinated.

“After 24 months and unprecedented medical innovation, the last month has brought millions of cases and tens of thousands of deaths. While many might declare victory on the pandemic, we are clearly very far from where want we want to be right now, especially with billions of people yet to be vaccinated,” Brownstein said, referring to the continued global crisis.

The U.S. is still averaging more than 750,000 new cases a day, about three times the surge from last winter in 2021. However, there is growing evidence to suggest that the latest omicron case surge may be beginning to recede in the parts of the country that were first struck by the variant.

Although preliminary global studies indicate that the omicron variant may cause less severe illness than prior variants, health officials say that the sheer numbers of infections caused by the new variant could still overwhelm the health care system.

Why do they even bother to publish this stuff?

In short, it was an attempt to give the Feds the power to make sure elections would never again be auditable. And they are keeping the pandemic kabuki going so they have excuses, so now that this attempt to rig the game permanently failed, they should stop this shit.

“If it was up to me, anyone unvaccinated would not be admitted to a hospital,” Stern said on his Sirius XM show. “At this point, they have been given plenty of opportunity to get the vaccine.”

A caller concurred with barring unvaccinated patients from treatment, noting they should be sent “home with a bottle of Robitussin.”

“Right,” Stern continued. “They have been told you will die if you get the vaccine. Some of you will live, but most of you will die. They don’t trust our government. They think that there’s some conspiracy to turn them into a magnet or something like this. They think they are going to become magnetized if they take the vaccine.”

During his radio show on March 22, 1994, Stern announced his candidacy for Governor of New York under the Libertarian Party ticket, challenging Mario Cuomo for re-election. Stern planned to reinstate the death penalty, remove highway tolls to improve traffic flow and limit road work to graveyard shifts hours. Stern announced that once those three goals were accomplished, he would resign and pass the governorship to his lieutenant.

A pregnant woman and her husband were detained by police in Nanaimo, British Columbia recently for failing to comply with B.C.’s “Limitation Order #2”, but more generically the infractions mentioned by police appeared to be for failing to wear a mask, provide identification and not having a vaccine passport.

Derek Christensen and his wife were at the Nanaimo Aquatic Centre before they were detained and later handcuffed, according to an immediate family member.

“They cuffed both of them, put them in separate cars, then took them to a garage and questioned them for a hour or so,” the family member explained.

    Today, in blustering buffoonery

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken warned that any Russian invasion of Ukraine would be “met with a severe and a united response” following his meeting Friday with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, the latest round of diplomatic talks that Blinken said provided a “clearer path of understanding each others’ concerns.”

Blinken’s meeting with Lavrov came two days after President Joe Biden muddled the US message of severe consequences for Russia, saying at a press conference that a “minor incursion” might not trigger the same response from NATO as an invasion. Biden clarified Thursday that any Russian troops crossing Ukraine’s border would constitute an invasion.
Blinken held a 90-minute bilateral meeting Friday in Geneva with Lavrov, in which the US sought to convince Russia to de-escalate the situation at the Ukrainian border where Russia has amassed tens of thousands of troops. Blinken said that the meeting was “not a negotiation,” just like last week’s talks between NATO and the West.

“We didn’t expect any major breakthroughs to happen today, but I believe we are on a clearer path in terms of understanding each other’s concerns, each others’ positions,” Blinken said at a press conference after the meeting. “Let’s see what the next days bring.”

“Mitch McConnell is accused of racism by Ilhan Omar and slew of Dems who misconstrue his words after he correctly pointed out that African Americans are voting in just as high a percentage as other Americans after voting rights bill defeat

In 2008 and 2012, the years Barack Obama was running for president, black turnout actually exceeded turnout for all Americans. In 2016 and 2020, black turnout was consistent with the U.S. average.

The 2020 election had some of the highest turnout of all time for all demographics. In that election, 72.6% of non-Hispanic whites cast their vote, 65.6% of non-Hispanic blacks cast their vote. Voting was much lower for Hispanics, of whom 52.6% participated in the election. Among other races (Asian, Pacific Islander, Native American, etc.) 59.9% cast a vote, according to figures from the United States Election Project.

In both 2008 and 2012, more black Americans turned out to vote than white Americans – 65.2% of white voters turned out in 2008 versus 69.1% black, and 61.8% white in 2012 vs. 67.4%

Check out what the original paper on SARS-Cov2 said before it got “peer reviewed.” That’s worth a thread unroll, but it’s not that long.

    • Translucent Chum

I’m going to read, but wouldn’t that mean that the virus got deadlier and less virulent? Isn’t that the opposite of normal?

      • rhywun

Maybe the folks we paid to “tune it up” weren’t done yet.

      • Ozymandias

That’s because Omicron and Alpha/Delta are not actually from quite the same genetic tree… Or maybe it would be better to say it this way – they share a common great-grandparent, but Omicron is the “older” of the variants.
That’s what the governments have been trying to hide and downplay – because it destroys the zoonotic origin story for Alpha/Delta.
The Wu Flu was 100% a manipulated virus, the product of GoF research that you helped pay for, taxpayer citizen. Congratulations on your success.

      • Count Potato

Two things to consider here. Scientists didn’t put much effort into coronavirus research until SARS happened. Coronaviruses that infect humans were discovered while researching coronaviruses that infect chickens.

Another thing is that’s it’s possible that a lab with lousy security could leak more than one virus, just like a bad driver can get into more than one accident.

    • juris imprudent

I see this is related to TES, and I have reason to be skeptical of TES.

      • Ozymandias

So you’ve already debunked it, eh, JI?
Do you have any substantive comment on the changes made to the paper in peer review?
And your certain that the Wu Flu was the product of a wet market, too, right?
I know, I know – you know someone in the “industry” who disagrees, ergo, that person you know has to be correct.
        I got it.

      • juris imprudent

I haven’t debunked it, but someone with a lot more knowledge of genetics than you or I has, my son. Since you can’t actually evaluate the genetic drift (which is TES’s big claim) you aren’t actually very well informed either.

      • juris imprudent

You should always be extra skeptical when your biases are being confirmed.

  45. The Late P Brooks

A natural permutation, before they tuned it up?

    • Ozymandias

Likely an earlier lab leak. OR, if you really want to go tinfoil hat, it was intentionally released earlier to provide the Chinese with immunity in advance of the release of the later variant that fucked up most of the world.

      • Urthona

The Chinese don’t really have that good of a death rate. Everyone understands their statistics are completely fake right?

Or, as my son put it, a really bad interpretation of the data on the genetic evolution.

Austrians who have taken one or two doses most of the Wuhan coronavirus vaccines, except for the Chinese Sinovac or the Russian Spunik V vaccines, will be considered fully vaccinated but those who refuse to take the vaccine could face a fine of up to €3,600 (£2,994/$4,072), newspaper Kronen Zeitung reports.

Tonga has turned back an aid flight from Australia due to a positive Covid case on board, despite assurances from the Morrison government that humanitarian relief from the volcanic eruption and tsunami could be offered in a Covid-safe way.

Tonga is Covid-free and has a strict border control policy, requiring contactless delivery of aid that began arriving by plane on Thursday.

The Australian aid flight left Brisbane on Thursday afternoon but was turned around mid-flight after being notified of the positive Covid case, an Australian defence spokeswoman said.

The human race is as good as gone.

It could be true. Their border has been closed for the whole thing. My mom’s caregiver is from Tonga and has been unable to visit her family all this time. Goods do get in and out of the country, so there must be some contact, but in general they have been very closed off. Given that they are very large people they have reason to be careful, but at some point they will have to open up.

She was slightly bemoaning her son’s decision to drop out of college and do something else, which I don’t remember. I told her XX was driving a forklift and that it is in high demand here.
