The weather had no impact on that column falling. Given enough time mass wasting happens to all geologic formations.* It was just an unfortunate overlap of geologic and human time for those people.
*Otherwise the Appalachian Range would still be as tall as the Himalaya Range and the rocks forming Mt Everest would still be deep under the ocean.

You won’t find me in an airport for the foreseeable future. Until they close the highways I will drive. I have resigned myself I will not be leaving the country ever again. Well, at least until I sneak into Mexico.
I may do a couple more international – at least until it becomes impossible.
Being unable to fly would essentially prevent the girlfriend and I from making it to Viva again. We’ve got tickets for this year, so I’m hoping the mask mandates are gone by then… even though Vegas still appears to have a mandate in place.

Let us know if stays that way.
I generally try to watch the first episode of every anime for a given season. With only a handful of exceptions that I can’t actually remember, my rule is never watch any anime that is based on a game. This applies especially any phone based games. I should stick to my rule.
Girls’ Frontline continues this trend.
The only reason I even tried to watch it was that it has essentially top voice talents that are now past their “sell buy” dates. This means voice actresses that are both older and married and can’t be used on the idol circuit to promote the works they voiced.
Wow was it awful… I’m surprised the the generally woke folk at ANN reviewed it as favorably as they did. If one wishes to see an anime based on anthropomorphic weapons I’d much prefer Upotte!! .

I thought Arcane was very good. Jinx is a memorable character.
I thought Arcane was excellent.
Perhaps I should narrow that to Japanese games.
I like the series for Pretty Umamusume (sp?) Derby and Princess Connect. Those are both pretty fun.
I will confess to giving Umamusume an ok.
Bidenomics
But the economy is far from perfect. Biden said “a handful of giant companies” were squeezing out competition and raising prices on consumers, while keeping wages for their workers “unfairly low.” He added that this made Americans pay more for food because larger companies pushed smaller businesses out of the game.
“You’ve heard me say before: Capitalism without competition isn’t capitalism. It’s exploitation,” Biden said. “And I’m determined to end the exploitation.”
——-
According to the White House, a smaller number of large companies control more business than they did 20 years ago in over 75% of US industries, and it’s causing prices to surge, while holding back wages for workers in more concentrated markets.
Biden said on Friday he would be meeting with his “competition council” later this month to continue pushing for broad action to increase competition, raise wages, and lower prices for consumers — part of the “three-part plan” he laid out that also includes fixing the supply-chain crisis and lowering food costs.
Despite his issues with big corporations, Biden is continuing to push for the passage of his Build Back Better agenda to further stimulate the economy, and he said that “capitalism is alive and very well” during his July remarks, referencing more jobs and better wages.
We’ll get the Ministry of Plenty to set wages and prices, and allocate resources. We’ll have the economy humming like a finely tuned machine.
Because nothing says I support the little guy like ramping up costs and regulations in order to put them out of business.
Stated vs, revealed preferences. Besides, the big guys offer more opportunity for tribute like campaign contributions, employment for former staffers and relatives, paid speaking engagements, etc etc that schmoe mom and pop won’t do.
I was thinking the same thing. I’d love to know how much his administration has ramped up issuing regulations.

I started watching this surprising new series called The Night Manager. It must be super low profile, nobody’s talking about it.
Looks like one of those limited episode BBC productions. Possibly because the UK release was early 2016?
If that’s the one he’s talking about, that was a good show. Recommended.
Slinky Brits, publishing their series years before I take an interest.
It’s very good. Hugh Laurie is of course excellent. I barely see any Prince Regent in him anymore. And Hiddleston, of course. I can’t take Olivia Colman altogether seriously despite her acting chops on account of Mitchell and Webb, especially because she is once again massively pregnant.
I was once sitting at a table in a pub on which there was a note saying “reserved from 6pm” (it might have been 5pm – I don’t recall) and as the hour drew near and the party entered the pub to take their table, it turned out to include Olivia Coleman. No Mark Corrigan quotes were leveled at her and I left quietly to go watch a movie. I’m not 100% sure but I’m fairly certain it was Thor which puts this in 2011.
/cool story
My brother is fond of telling the story from the late Seventies, when he was out in Beverly Hills doing a custom cabinet install for some rich guy. On a Saturday, he was out bumming around Hollywood, and went into a little diner to have a sandwich for lunch. After he’d been there a few minutes, this other guy came in and took the stool next to him, ordered a cup of coffee and a sandwich.
This was just after the movie Stripes had come out. My brother looks at the guy, thinks a moment, and says, “Hey, you’re John Larroquette.” They guy said, “Yeah.”
So my bro and John Larroquette sat there, eating and gabbing for about an hour. My brother maintains that, despite his typical characters on-screen, John L. is actually “a pretty cool guy.”
I take it back – would have been early Eighties. Stripes released in ’81.
Are there boobs? No? Well, that’s why nobody is watching it.
Also watched Gringo from a couple years ago. Also enjoyed it. Like a budget Coen bros movie, not as tightly written or pretentious but violent and madcap.
My brother ended up in a hot spring with Chris O’Dowd at a little resort spa in New Mexico. O’Dowd was shooting something here at the time, I forget what. I’d watched IT Crowd with my brother so he knew who he was, but because my brother is a bit of a troll, he didn’t let on he knew. He spent the whole time making fun of Chris O’Dowd’s accent.
My only claim to fame is that I did some work at Bonanza Ranch, where Alec Baldwin totally didn’t murder a woman.

Actually I had to quit watching after a certain scene involving her that had me thinking, why are you risking this?
And then I remembered that this isn’t The Departed, he’s there for revenge as much as anything else.
I watched it when it came out and it wasn’t that good.
Yeah, I hated that one. Most of le Carre’s later stuff is pretty weak.
Was thinking that very thing. I’ve been disappointed with them, or at least the movie adaptations.

Manhattan DA: ‘I don’t understand the pushback’ to lighter punishment for violent criminals
Yeah, with crime rapidly rising in all of NYC I can’t understand why anyone would take issue with this either.
That will teach ’em.
Somebody should misdemeanor the shit out of the DA.
That’s encouraging. ?
What is the end goal of this stuff, I wonder. It’s obviously not to reduce crime, because we went down this exact same path in the seventies and it had the predictable result of much higher crime and chased more than 800,000 people out of the city between 1970 and 1980.
This time it will be, like, totally different.
I have said it before and I will say it again. Wait until one bank or brokerage house CEO, or their spouse, is robbed at gun point. If even one of those companies leaves Manhattan it will start an exodus.
There’s already been lots of movement to Florida. I don’t recall the specifics, but it was various financial firms.
With modern computers and trading, is there any reason besides history and inertia that financial services firms are located in NYC? Sure, New York was a center of commerce a couple of decades / centuries ago because of its outstanding natural harbor. But how important is that today? What’s the difference if Citi, BoA, Goldman Sachs, et al decamp for Charleston, SC, Naples, FL, or The Woodlands, TX?
With modern computers
Latency.
Yes, it matters.
Face-to-face plus the big city still attracts asshole go-getters?
The execs want to live in those places, yes. The grunt workers who are mostly just starting out? Not really.
BofA is already headquartered in Charlotte, along with Wells Fargo. Less than 10% of Citi’s employees work in NY.
Yep. Charlotte, NC is a huge banking center.
It won’t surprise me if it gets bigger.
Smallish divisions and lots of back office work. I’m talking about a corporate HQ. Imagine Citibank, Chase, or Goldman moving lock, stock, and barrel to another state. It does not matter where. The panic in Albany and NYC would be tangible.
NYC lost many HQ’s to Connecticut et al. from the 70s on. Conditions then were believe it or not much more dire than now.
That was when NYC at least pretended to care about enforcing the law. Now it’s passé. Where do you think the city will be in 2-4 years?
Not even going to hazard a guess. Who the hell knows?
Imagine Citibank, Chase, or Goldman moving lock, stock, and barrel to another state.
This is what I meant. Apologies if I was unclear on the specifics. Think of say, UBS issuing this press release:
Zürich, Switzerland — UBS AG has announced its movement of its US headquarters of operations to its new corporate campus in Deland, Florida. The move comes the same day as Boston-based Fidelity announced its own move to the nearby town of Deltona.
The anticipated increase in air traffic has already prompted the airports in Sanford and Daytona Beach to upgrade their facilities and capacity.

Interesting regional variation of FYTW.
Australian Health Minister Greg Hunt said Djokovic’s visa was canceled after border officials examined “the integrity and the evidence behind” his medical exemption.
After he was given it in the first place.
My understanding is that the Victoria and/or Melbourne rules differ from the national rules, and he didn’t get the “national exemption”. So he could enter Victoria but not Australia.
Or maybe they just said FYTW.
We’re really going back to the 1970’s. I just received an investment opportunity to buy shares in Michael Jordan rookie card. One of the plot points for some of the 70’s/80’s PI books was stolen stamps/coins/arts/etc as they would hold value against inflation.
Watching Svengoolie. A damn “vax your kids” commercial came on. Is there no escape?
I always liked Svengoolie, although I seldom watch him because I generally don’t watch commercial TV.
During my stint in the AF, while stationed in the Azores, I befriended the guy who did the “Svengoolie” character on the local AFRTS station. It was pre-taped and, whenever his show would come on, he’d disappear. Can’t recall his name after all these years but I do remember that his wife was a hottie.
I streamed something on a Hulu recently. I usually do only Amazon Prime or Netflurcks.

Gravitational forces of the Sun and Moon impact behavior of all organisms — even humans
I read “organisms” as “orgasms” the first time through.
In the video posted on Twitter, a large portion of a cliff can be seen crashing into the water at a popular tourist attraction along the Rio Grande river, directly on top of several boats as horrified onlookers screamed.
Ouch.
Hercules (or Hercales; known to the Romans as Melqart) is a heroic figure of Greek mythology who was then adapted to fit Roman mythology. As the son of Zeus (or Jupiter), Hercules was a demigod who had various adventures. He is considered the god of strength and heroes.

Fucking O’Reilly auto parts.
So teens are buying parts they need for the Exploder. Told them they need front struts and rear shock absorber and you should spend about $250.
The manager there took advantage of two dumb ass teens and they sold them the whole assemblies for like 700 bucks.
I say dumb ass teens cause they didn’t stop, think and maybe call and ask does this seem right?
This is a car they are using for a year or two until they buy their own.
It’s a learning experience.
It is, they are still boxed (though they broke the end of a couple of the boxes) and we will get what they need. Though, FIL is gonna swing buy because they may very well need the whole assembly and I’ll compensate half if they need.
I’m not a car guy. I can pick put components, but that is about it
I learned a lot in high school and during my undergrad years when I worked on my own cars.
Namely, that I hated it.
And about making sure I bought what I needed and at the best price.
Dick move by that manager for sure. Next time tell them to look it up online and find the part number on Oreilly’s site. That usually (usually) shortcircuits their parts store brains and they don’t put up any resistance after that.
Yeah we will take em back. Not gonna make a big stink but seriously two teens that obviously are not gearheads. They need to learn though.

Agreed on both counts.
BUT…when you can’t wait a day or two (or three or four) I like O’Reilly’s. And like Seguin, says, research online before hand and give them a part number. Or hell, buy it online and just walk in and pick it up.

One new series on Prime (may be bbc too) that my i watched a few eps with my folks over Christmas – a new adaptation of All Creatures Great and Small – brit pre-war country vet story. O recall seeing the books years ago – may have read one or two but never watched the 70s adaptation.
O recall seeing the books years ago
Bits and pieces of them were part of reading class in the grade school I went to.
I remember a bit where an animal (cow I think?) pinned Herriot up against a stall wall. The farmer stood there laughing at him.
That was on PBS constantly in my childhood. Didn’t really catch my fancy.
The books fall into the Narnia/Harry Potter style of English literature that creates a world so perfect you wish it actually existed and you could go there.
Just 6 episodes a season. Wife and I enjoyed it a lot. Quite funny at times.
Excellent music choice Spud. Kind of Blue is one of the top 5 albums of any musical genre ever recorded, probably number one. I watched “Deja Vu”, with Denzel Washington. Filmed in 2012, set in 2006.
At first the “high tech surveillance” was so far fetched i almost gave up on it. But then Denzel’s character reaches the same level of skepticism and tests the story he was told.
Woah. Then it got good.

My apartment building is just about fully vaccinated and masks are mandated everywhere. So naturally there’s a huge covid outbreak. The Karens are pestering building management to go back to full lockdown mode. Surprisingly BM sent out an email noting that even with all of the cases, nobody is actually sick, so for now i am relatively free.
It’s probably due to not sorting trash into organic and landfill waste.
My apartment building still has a “masks required in open areas” sign taped to the elevator and everybody completely ignores it. I have no idea of the “status” of my neighbors and see no reason why the management would either since it’s none of their goddamn business.

Someone here posted a link to the Bill Withers recording session that this video came from . It was a masterclass. I’m having trouble finding it. Can anyone help?
It’s from an appearance on the BBC’s Old Grey Whistle Test in 1972, but I can’t find anything other than single songs.
I made the mistake of engaging the normals tonight. Some examples:
Me: If everything they say is proven wrong, why believe what they say?
Them: Duh, information is changing every day.
Me: When the vax came out and Trump was President, the same people telling us to get the vax now were telling us they wouldn’t take it.
Them: That didn’t happen.
Me: Last year they said get the vax to stop the spread, but now they’re saying to get the vax so you don’t get serious symptoms.
Them. No they always said you’d still get covid even with the vax, but it wouldn’t be as severe.
Not sure if those are normies, or NPCs that get their talking points updated daily.
Living in Clown World (i.e., Big Research U town), I see a lot of the latter.
Don’t make that mistake again, for sanity’s sake.
I’ve changed my mind. Rather than keep my head down, I’m taking the path of speaking out in hopes that like minded people will know they’re not alone. I think that’s a small thing that I can do. I know I won’t convert the sheep.

Dude, I’ve just been listening to David Suchet read Revelations. (He read the whole Bible—free on YouTube).
David Suchet was Hercule Poirot, and when he became a Christian as an English actor in the 80s, it wasn’t good for one’s career. He went on to do an excellent documentary “In the Footsteps of St Paul.”
Here’s revelations.

Some video evidence of all of this on your mobile device of choice might come in handy here.
Mornin’ Glibbies! Work was hell on ice quite literally but this came up on my playlist and I really dig it – https://youtu.be/eovMuxGqyGQ How have I never heard of these guys before? They sound like Jim Morrison and Ted Nugent had a morose child that was raised by Bill Ward. Outstanding!
Good morning, Fes! Hope you came through your worknight unscathed! I’d listen to the band you linked, but Sunday morning is my weekly choral music time on the satellite radio, so I’m in rather more of a mellow music mode.
Yeah, it’s like 11 minutes long but well worth it if you ever want to get your ya-ya’s out. I just found it really interesting. Nashville guys.
On a happier note, the young fellers came over and cleared our roof before we got another foot of snow. Took them about an hour and a bit, total which would have been 4 hours for me working alone (including the snowblowing) if I were even capable of climbing up there. They refused payment. “You’re Family!” Tears welled, beers were distributed…
????
Oddly enough, the extra foot of snow made the roads less treacherous than they were on Friday. Oiled skillet they were.
Good morning Glibs. Nothing like getting at 4 AM to take your kid to the airport. I see coffee and a nap in my future.
Good morning, Chafed! Kid heading back to school? If so, not one that’s insufferably woke, I hope.
Coffee and a nap? That’s not how it’s supposed to work.
Ni hao ma, bitches?
Fine and dandy.

Thoughts?
Just about everyone’s Dad had one of those Enfield’s in the closet when I was boy. Accurate if not too beat to shit. Good moose rifle.

2,500 hours of protection!
My Tiger Rock is better and it only cost me nothing.
Are you selling futures? I’d like to get in on that. Already got a share of Micheal Jordan’s tennys so I’m good there. I want to be diversified.

More violent Trump supporters.
Good morning to all the Sunday early birds. Had that first cup of coffee, am now aware of my surroundings.

No meth found? Sad.
There was an explosion at an Oath Keepers rally?
Funny thing, back pre-9/11, Pacifica Radio (all commie, all the time) loved the heck out of the Oath Keepers, because they were going to be the bulwark for when Bush/Clinton/Bush violated posse comitatus and implemented their dictatorship.
I’m really digging Biden’s “Build Back Butter” plan.

A girl by her friends was called Butter
Though on oleo she had been fed
When asked what’s to blame
For this incorrect name
“It’s because she’s a much better spread.”
Good Morning all.
Same old crazy, same old stupid shit here….
Yup. It just gets stupider and stupider up here.
Morning all. Just glibbing until the sun gets a bit higher in the sky.
USPS has apparently lost track of my targets. I planned on spending my isolation assembling then, putting them into the correct storage, and moving the falling steel into their proper place for the summer. If one of the lumber yards has contactless pickup, then I could get the 2x4s cut to their proper length.
But noooooo.
Those commie rat fuckers!
Hey now! Rat fuckers provide a valuable service!
No pick and chose? Hope you’re feeling better.
Eh, I haven’t been feeling “bad” since New Years. I have stupidly severe allergies, so sinus problems are kind of an all the time thing.
And having a “get out of work free” card from the positive cooftest had meant I don’t wake up early planning out my day. It’s rather nice. I just wish I could leave the house. But there is a small chance I could actually hurt someone.
I wish I had one of their credit cards so I could cancel it.

There will be a big pool of Organic Employees (no artificial ingredients) available and someone will tap into it.
“No Vaxxed Need Apply”
I do, but after dumping American Express and Bank of America last year over their overtly political and unconstitutional positions I find myself running out of options. Are there any financial institutions that respect the Constitution anymore?
No.
Any local credit unions near you? AFAIK, most have moved from membership based on where you work to membership based on where you live.
