Links of Saturday eveningness!

My witty content creator is broken.

Apathy abounds. The sun’s out, and it’s still in the 20s. I’m pale, puffy, and out of shape.

So let’s do some links!

Who are you going to alienate next, Joe?

He said the quiet part that everybody already knew.

She wins.

What? This money here? Why yes, we’re just going to give it back. Nothing to see here.

Warty hardest hit.

And you know what? I look real good today.

I’ll say. That’s the best sales pitch for Mexico that I’ve ever seen.

    How’s things, Spud?

    • Name's BEAM. James BEAM.

I’ve been seeing more and more of these lifestyle-reporting pieces from Mexico in the last year or so, several from expat Canucks who are pleased as punch to have moved to Mexico (and they’re in places that I’ve never heard of that look really nice, and dirt cheap, too).

I really have wasted too much of my life being loyal to a country that’s generally trying to screw over the Spousal Unit and I. We live well where we are, but we could live like Elder Gods in certain places in Mexico. Plus the nieces and nephews (all based in either Vancouver, Canada or near Seattle, Washington) would be way more interested in visiting us there than in Edmonton.  :-/

      • LCDR_Fish

Dunno….still feel like Panama would be safer – if slightly more expensive. There were a lot of snowbirds in the area when we were on deployment in ’11-’12.

      • Atanarjuat

I felt pretty safe in Costa Rica (only when outside the big city) and it has a cooler mountainous climate. Was it outrageously hot in lowland Panama? Mexico probably has way better food – just bland rice and beans everywhere I went.

      • LCDR_Fish

Panama City wasn’t too bad – definitely warm…but equatorial – wysiwyg. Never got up to the mountain rain forests but heard great things about them from shipmates.

      • Name's BEAM. James BEAM.

I’m told that the key to living safely in Mexico is to not be in any “transit corridor” where drugs are moved south to north, and additionally to avoid many of the well-known “tourist trap” destinations. Mexico’s a HUGE country, and I’m sure there are many places there that would fit the bill.

    • Spudalicious

      I’m doing well, Tundra. Yourself?

    • Fourscore

Seeing those folks all bundled up and having fun is a welcome sight. Sadly I doubt that many of my neighbors would be out in that weather.
I had to clean up snow today so I have an excuse.

It seems like an easy decision to make, undue the mandates. When the groceries get short in the cities who will be blamed, the truckers or the government lackeys. At least there is media exposure to put some heat on Trudeau et al.

      • rhywun

I expect the truckers will be blamed by the majority of pols, by all elite institutions, and by half the population. I wonder if they’ve put any thought into trying not to disrupt deliveries so much.

      • Homple

The truckers are teaching a lesson to the “email and zoom meeting” job caste about how stuff gets to them.

According to some anon sources inside the PMO, Trudeau’s “frustrated and scared” at the reaction of a lot of Canadians so far. Seriously, the guy’s got no instinct for retail politics at all, he’s basically a focus-group-driven goofball/shithead that doesn’t understand that it doesn’t matter if you have 60% of the country supposedly on your side if the other 40% is much more motivated (i.e., pissed off and grumpy). You need an overwhelming percentage of the governed on your side to be considered legitimate. He does not have that.

If he doesn’t start negotiating real soon now, he’s gonna find out just how much of a group of assholes a large minority of Canadians can be once you push them too far. We love living peaceably, probably more so than any other nation on Earth (which explains why we have such long fuses), but don’t fuck with us.

      • Zwak, holding the spinal column of JFK wrapped in Marilyn Monroes neglegie

One thing I have been saying all along; the left has no idea of what anyone outside the left thinks. They have zero feedback mechanism, having co-opted or delegitimized any conflicting media. They, in the US, Canada, England, fuck, the entire western world, have removed anything that could tell them how wrong they are.

Most people just want to get along with their lives. So they will wear the mask, get the shot, etc. But when something comes along and says “NO!!!” it is a huge shock to the gov’t, so they label it racist, or sexist, or some other term that used to work, and they cannot see that they have debased that term so much that it means nothing at this point.

People can see that this is peaceful, unlike BLM. People can see it is honest, unlike Antifa. People can see something that directly pertains to them, their kids, their lives, articulated. Voiced. That is why this is resonating in Canada.

Plus it’s the Mexican kind with real sugar that seems somehow fizzier, not that chemical tasting flattish high fructose fucking bullshit.

    • Name's BEAM. James BEAM.

I’ve tried to detect a difference betwixt and between HFCS and sugar cane-derived sugar, but personally I can’t perceive any diff whatsoever. I’ve had Coca-Cola made from both formulations, and my reaction to the difference is “uhm, sure. Whatevs.”

Really, I’m not that surprised. HFCS is a 55/45 ratio of fructose to glucose, while cane sugar (and also beet sugar) is essentially 50/50. I’m supposed to detect a difference? What am I, a mass spectrometer?

      • Stinky Wizzleteats

      • rhywun

Yeah, I have no idea if I can taste the difference. What I have noticed is that the sugar pop I buy – generally from Mexico or Italy – is usually slightly less sweet than the corn stuff. The corn pop is way too sweet for me.

I need to get my shit together #89201

Finally looks like an opportunity to properly update my mil record after a ton of stuff was deleted when I left active duty. Looking through all my boxes of papers for bits and pieces of my record to bring to the office for input/update (I hope it’s that simple). Just found an award that I thought I was missing in hard copy (and soft copy since it was deleted) since 2016. Great. I know I’d looked through that box multiple times.

Still can’t find one last award that I know should be around here somewhere – an Army Reserve award that didn’t show up in the mail until after I left Navy Active Duty – and isn’t in my digital Army record either. There is a nice new system for downloading your digitized records – but sadly seems to be missing a lot of stuff – even items marked on the DD214. Thankfully, I think I do have all of those on hard copy. May have to request additional updates or send them stuff down the road.

Found another box with some other records in it though – pairs nicely with another set of notes I’ve got sitting on the side….more history to write about maybe.

    • Loveconstitution1789

I had some missing awards too. Humanitarian service medal and NATO medal. I will double check tomorrow but IIRC, I contacted bureau of naval personnel???

After comparing my duty station periods with award location and period, they updated my DD214. Personal awards would obviously require the citation copy they gave you or maybe their is some other documentation. Much of my service record was put on microfiche but I dont know if they do that anymore. They Navy also has some issue with old records destroyed in a fire years ago.

Also try contacting the command where you served. I lucked out that an old command had documents that the record keepers of my service jacket didnt have.

Something something consent of the governed

Ottawa police, which warned on Friday of a crackdown on the protest and dedicated more officers, do not have enough resources to end the protests, the city’s police chief said on Saturday. Trudeau ruled out the use of troops against truckers in the capital earlier this week.

“This is a city under siege, this is a threat to democracy, this is a nationwide insurrection, this is madness,” Chief Peter Sloly said at a police services’ board meeting. “We have done our very best.”

Respect must be earned, Chiefy, and- once lost, it is very very difficult to win back. Tread lightly.

    • Name's BEAM. James BEAM.

Trudeau didn’t rule it out — the chief staff of the Canadian Armed Forces informed His High Wankerness™ in the last 48 hours that the job of the CAF was to defend Canadians against foreign aggression, not to act as an internal police force against Canadian citizens. What a fucking shit-show this is turning out to be.

Fuck Trudeau, and all of his freedom-hating, boot-licking Central-Canadian MPs. Not to mention those ass-cracks from British Columbia who think that Canadians who have a problem with his fascist tactics are the same as some group of God-damned Al-Qaeda operatives. Seriously, just how fucking stupid do you have to be to think that there’s any equivalency between those two categories? Would you even have enough brain cells to support autonomic breathing? How do those people even remain upright?

Nope. Look at post 1/6, among others. Meanwhile when there’s out and out rioting, Muffintop Milley sez fuck you, it’s my military.

      • LCDR_Fish

OTOH, we do have Posse Comitatus enshrined in law. The military was NOT involved in 1/6. Not in any police action. They showed up for security afterwards – and AFAIK not involved in any arrests (and even that was only Guard). Active Duty would have been a whole different can of worms.

      • dbleagle

OTOOH, we do stretch Posse Comitatus like Hillary in a spandex dress. In the 80’s and 90’s JTF-6 involved a bunch of stuff where you could hear the spandex beginning to give way. Plus if biden’s handlers declare an insurrection or invasion PC is largely shelved.

      • Gustave Lytton ????

The ghost of Esequiel Hernández agrees. Also a bunch of NG counterdrug stuff that is/was funded in the end by feds.

And federal armed forces (both active duty and federalized NG) were used to enforce desegregation, along with active duty used for the Rodney King riots.

Jane Hall, a former cable news pundit and now a journalism instructor at American University, agrees with Malone’s assertion that there is still an audience for fact-based journalism rather than opinion-driven content in an increasingly partisan cable news landscape.

I’ve mentioned it here a few times before, but since it’s in the links I will say that I’ve been to Mexico about 15 times at this point and also spent significant time in nine other Latin American countries, including a couple years in Brazil. I obviously love it south of the border. Mexico would absolutely be at the top of the list of countries where I could imagine living in semi retirement for a number of reasons. I’m in love with the southern Baja coast on the Sea of Cortez side. It’s a place where you can get very remote and yet be not very far away from an international airport. The food is fantastic and the fishing is excellent and it’s nice being on beaches where you will see more goats in a day than people. Unfortunately it’s not as cheap as it once was. An ideal lifestyle would be six months there and six months stateside. .

The Canadian truckers have already raised $2 million on GiveSendGo. As I said last night: Streisand Effect, how the fuck does that shit work?

  26. Name's BEAM. James BEAM.

Another perspective on what’s happening in Canada, a thread by by Matt Gurney: I think we’re in deep shit.

And the fucking Trudeau Liberals have bought and paid for it and even have the receipts, the dumb motherfuckers. Thanks for nothing, you feckless witlings.

    • Gustave Lytton ????

The freedom convoy is a symptom, not the cause. This guy doesn’t seem to get that. That there isn’t widespread violence isn’t happenstance. It’s the type of people involved, what they want, and how they’re going about it. Toronto and other places aren’t handling better, they’re just bottling down a boiling pot and thinking it’s a success. Just like all over, politicians think they’re anointed kings and ignore the consent of the governed at their own peril.

      • rhywun

This seems obvious to me. They’re not antifa, FFS.

      • Festus

Exactly so. He’s going on and on about the symptoms but never once addresses the disease.

    • rhywun

I dunno about any of the specifics here but this thought has crossed my mind frequently in recent years:

We cannot vote our way out of this mess.

  27. kinnath

I binge watched Reacher on Prime the last two days. I found it enjoyable. So, two thumbs up if anyone cares.

    • slumbrew

Grazie. Looking forward to finding the time to watch it.

      • Chafed

I’m watching Bloodsport. It’s important to revisit the classics.

    • Not Adahn

Only a few episodes in, but liking it. It’s like if Frank Castle was Sherlock Holmes. Plus Roscoe’s thighs are yummy.

  28. Festus

ugh. It’s been two days since the new payroll announcement and still no password. I’ve told them, no pay, no work. We’ll see what tomorrow brings.

    • Chafed

I hope it’s your paycheck. In my area, an employer who fails to pay faces some serious financial penalties. How about in Canuckistan?

      • Festus

Probably a long and grueling battle in court. I refuse to go in if they won’t guarantee pay. Judi and her friends went to the red-neck rebel rally again. Looked to be about a thousand strong. Too bad the prime speaker was so inarticulate.

      • Festus

I’m still owed about 30 hours of OT because of that Kronos fuck up which I will probably never get to drink.

      • Chafed

Are they going to pay you the OT?

      • rhywun

        K’plah!

      • robodruid

I have used the very same reference.
        🙂

      • TARDis

I had to Google that. I knew it was Klingon, but didn’t know what it meant.

        Nerds.

      • Not Adahn

Everything in Klingon translates into “I will kill you to death.”

    • TARDis

I was waiting for this. So many choices…. Mornin’, 4×20.

    • Gender Traitor

Good morning, 4(20), TARDy, and ‘bodru! ?

      • robodruid

        Good Morning GT et al.
Got cinnamon rolls proofing in the oven if anybody wants one.

      • Gender Traitor

I do! I do! I…guess I’ll have to settle for the “cinnamon roll”-scented liquid soap a coworker gave me for Christmas. It really does smell yummy.

      • Tres Cool

But is the taste authentic ?

  29. limey

A good morning honk to all.

*Dumps poutine into a vat of maple syrup, stirs it up with a hockey stick, and scoops out some of the mixture into a reusable Tim’s cup*

    • limey

Ps – apparently we have Tim Horton’s in the UK now, but I haven’t seen one.

      • Gender Traitor

Good morning, limey! Beware – Timmie’s might turn y’all into a nation of coffee drinkers! ?

    • Sean

      *Hooooonk*

Went out to dinner to meet some friends last night. Medium(ish) shelf restaurant, but it was absolutely packed. Had to wait a lil for a table.

We noted on the ride a couple other restaurants with packed parking lots.

Guess I don’t have to fear for them going out of business.

    • robodruid

They do seem like happy protesters.

    • Stinky Wizzleteats

A grass roots movement fronted by a bunch of blue collar normals is actually making a difference…weird.

      • Not Adahn

Blue collar folks actually do things for a living. The difference in process/results ratio at the gun clubs v. work is just breathtaking.

    • Not Adahn

If the Finns are getting involved, it’s time to GTFO of town.

  31. TARDis

OK, what is up the the tweeter? If I scroll down now, it demands I log in.

    • Not Adahn

      they’re soft paywalling it.

    • rhywun

I run an ad-blocker which can’t keep up with whatever they’re doing to screw up that site. It typically freezes when I scroll down, links don’t work, etc. I think they’re throwing up a popup that is invisible to me but still fucks up the page.

This does not bother me all that much. I only click some links from this crowd.

    • Not Adahn

I thought 9gag was buried in an unmarked grave somewhere in Spain.

Warming up rapidly now that the sun’s up. 2 degrees now!

      • Tres Cool

I think it was a balmy 12º F on my way home from work. Damn near a sauna after that past couple of mornings.
At least I didnt get the truck sideways trying to get up my driveway. Again.
