Monday Afternoon Links of Meh

“Meh”

No sleep, aches…a real “meh” day. I fully expect the links to reflect this… so, lets go see.

  • I don’t know the Arabic words for “Muh Democracy!”
  • I am sure the requisite shaking in boots is occurring. Or not.
  • I thought this was just an American thing? At least its back….right?
  • Your stationary bike will soon track you. But for whom, seems to be the question.

The comments are all yours.

“I thought this was just an American thing? At least its back….right?”

I though so too, but they were probably going to drink anyway.

As long as the French don’t try to take Moscow in the winter they should be OK.

    • Rat on a train

They can have Moscow, abandoned. Now what?

      • waffles

Freeze to death as nature intended?

    • Fourscore

It’s almost like Moscow hasn’t learned anything. Going to war in Winter in that part of Europe sucks.
Winter wars are for the tropics, man.

      • Chafed

Interestingly, there is speculation they are waiting for the ground to freeze because it has been warm winter. Their tanks do fine of frozen ground. Muddy ground is a problem for them.

      • Spudalicious

February 15th is the day of maximum freeze.

But a series of boycott calls had made it highly unlikely the 329-seat parliament in Baghdad’s high-security Green Zone would be able to clinch the necessary two-thirds quorum.

Then, on Monday afternoon, with only a few dozen MPs in the chamber, an official speaking on condition of anonymity confirmed to AFP that “there will be no vote to elect the president”.

The turmoil comes after October polls were marred by record-low turnout, post-election threats and violence, and a delay of several months until final results were confirmed.

How long until the US government decides to stick its dick back in Iraq?

Ireland will celebrate St. Patrick’s Day with a parade through the streets of Dublin for the first time in three years next month – and organisers hope the green-festooned festivities will energise a tourism sector hammered by a tough lockdown regime.

Good. But it should never have stopped.

    • Fourscore

“How long until the US government decides to stick its dick back in Iraq?”

We should never have left, ’cause we should never have been there in the first place.

Costa Rica, maybe, then occupy them for the next 75 years, in case El Salvador wants to start something.

      • TARDis

Not its dick, ours. And our children’s. And our grandchildren. And so on.

And the money will enter an Iraqi economy that suddenly is among the freest in the world. Iraq has no tariffs or duties, a flat tax rate of 15 percent, no restrictions on capital investment, few regulations that are being enforced, and a new currency that’s actually strengthened since its introduction last December.

Are the Germans in lockstep with not being able to keep the lights on because they’ve shut down their nuke plants and therefore are reliant on Russian natgas? I hope so because that’s the game they’re playing.

      • rhywun

Yeah, I don’t think the US and Germany are in “lockstep” here. Unless something has changed since yesterday.

      • Compelled Speechless

They’re probably just referring to our State Dept knowing exactly what the Germans are going to do because we shamelessly and unapologetically spy on their leader. Based.

Canadian Feds call for meeting about trucker convoy

The federal government is calling for the trucker convoy protests to end, and are proposing a special meeting with provincial and municipal governments to plan next steps, including enforcing existing provincial sanctions, as the demonstrations stretch into their second week in the nation’s capital.

“These blockades and occupations need to end. Unlawful activities are not the way to offer meaningful involvement in government policy development,” said Transport Minister Omar Alghabra on Monday.

Minister of Emergency Preparedness Bill Blair said during the federal update—the first of its kind since the convoy protests kicked off—that the federal government wants to strike a “trilateral table with municipal and provincial partners.” Blair said that this table would allow the various parties responsible for managing the standoff to keep lines of communication open and respond efficiently.

    • SDF-7

“The only meaningful involvement in government policy is what we can just ignore!”

Uppity plebes thinking they have a say in their own lives… the nerve!

    • Scruffy Nerfherder

Unlawful activities are not the way to offer meaningful involvement in government policy development

      Fuck off, asshole.

If you listened to anything else, you wouldn’t be in this situation. As it is, you demonized anyone who dared to disagree,

      • Fourscore

They should meet with Gordy, declare peace.

It would seem like a small part to concede and let the truckers do what they do best.

      • Scruffy Nerfherder

I’ll be surprised if they conceded anything at the federal level.

    • R C Dean

Their only plan is to coordinate a crackdown. That’s it. No intention of doing anything to actually resolve the situation. How they plan to forcibly remove hundreds of semis remains a mystery.

One wonders what their response to a boycott by truckers of Ottawa would be.

      • Scruffy Nerfherder

As I said before, Trudy is just stupid enough to think he can win this with brinksmanship.

        It’s going to get dicey.

      • prairieboy

Truckers are already blocking border crossings and slow rolling other crossings. If they uproot the protest expect to see more of this. Then there will be real problems and not imagined ones.

      • Lackadaisical

‘One wonders what their response to a boycott by truckers of Ottawa would be.’

I like this idea a lot. Seems like it’s be effective and not infringe on any rights, as relates to this mornings discussion.

      • Gadfly

What would they boycott? A total boycott would see people starving quite quickly. That’s a bit worse than honking.

      • Not Adahn

Nothing! 99.99% of truckers support the mandates!

    Ottawa police chief won’t resign

Ottawa’s police chief says he has no plans to resign amid criticism of his handling of the trucker protests that have occupied the city’s downtown for more than a week.

“Absolutely none,” Chief Peter Sloly said when Newstalk 580 CFRA’s Leslie Roberts asked whether he has any plans to step down.

NH State Rep. Klein-Knight ran into some trouble for using a naughty word in a conversation with a black activist at the State House. She some defenders. One pushing a novel excuse.

State Rep. Rosemarie Rung (D-Merrimack) released a statement Monday morning defending her statements on behalf of embattled Rep. Nicole Klein Knight (D-Manchester) who, Rung says, is a victim of antisemitism from her fellow Democrats.

“She had been under immense stress from antisemitism and felt threatened by others because she is Jewish.” Rung wrote.

It’s just the latest shot in a circular firing squad among New Hampshire Democrats and progressives over the past two weeks, with charges of “racism” being met with accusations of “antisemitism.”

Rung has been under fire for days since suggesting that Klein Knight’s use of the “N-Word” more than 20 times in a State House conversation with an 18-year-old Black activist might have been in “self-defense.”

Let’s have a little more NH State House drama

Rep. Tony Labranche (I-Amherst) left the Democratic Party earlier this year, telling NHJournal: “I’m changing my affiliation to independent because of the undemocratic nature of the state’s Democratic Party’s leadership. The irony is that the ‘Democratic’ party is the least democratic institution I’ve ever been part of.”

He reiterated those claims in a letter he emailed to the entire House Democratic Caucus late Friday night explaining his decision to leave the party. (Read the entire letter here.)

In his email, Labrance repeatedly reiterates his decision to leave “has nothing to do with the leadership of the caucus.” Instead, he says, the party “did not have my back” when he faced backlash over being “a young, gay, and progressive man holding office” in New Hampshire. In particular, he calls out N.H. State Democratic Party chair Ray Buckley — who is gay — over his treatment.

“The Democratic Party claims to stand with the LGBTQ+ community and other minority groups, yet when the youngest openly LGBTQ+ legislator in this country’s history reached out for help I was ignored,” Labranche wrote.

Buckley and the NHDP declined to comment.

One more bit of NH State House drama

Late Friday, progressive Democrat Rep. Manny Espitia (D-Nashua) issued a quasi-apology for his suggestion that Black men are in danger when they engage with State House security officers.

“A statement I recently made in which I referenced the “heightened dangers Black men face in this country in the presence of law enforcement” has been misrepresented in a news article to imply that I was calling the integrity of our Protective Services personnel into question,” Espitia wrote to his House colleagues.

“I apologize for not choosing my words more carefully, and I appreciate you providing me the opportunity to make this important clarification,” Espitia said.

    • Dr. Fronkensteen

Why is he apologizing? He’s a Democrat and his statement fits the narrative.

The American attitude to racism and the use of the n-word is utterly retarded.

      Alex Berenson:

The n-word is out of bounds for white people, okay? I don’t want to hear about how you have black friends and they use it all the time. I’m absolutely unsurprised at how poorly NJ’s great cannabis legalization has gone. The issue from Day 1 has always been how was the state going to get it money from it and who were going to be the lucky winner with the right connections who got the licenses. However, this actually surprised me.

No Black Owners Have Been Licensed Since NJ Legalized Marijuana

So far, not a single one of the 56 cannabis licenses that have been awarded in New Jersey has gone to a Black entrepreneur, advocates say.

    • Dr. Fronkensteen

SLD- There should be no licensing or affirmative action.

But If you are going to do it I would hold some aside for Black owned businesses. They’re the group most hurt by the war on drugs and should be allowed to wet their beak in return.

      • Sensei

I’m of the same opinion. I thought that black owned set asides would have been a given.

DULUTH, Minn. (WCCO) – The Duluth YMCA said an official was removed from a swim meet Sunday after attempting to disqualify a swimmer for wearing a “Black Lives Matter” swimsuit.

The meet was held at Superior High School. The YMCA said an “independent volunteer official inappropriately barred a student athlete from taking part in the meet.”

The Duluth NAACP said the girl “refused to change and stood in solidarity for what she believes in.”

The YMCA said it disputed the official’s ruling, and leadership stepped in to overrule it. The student was eventually allowed to participate.

“We need to protect our young Black girls and stand up against racism without being performative,” the NAACP said.

The NAACP also said the girl made the swimsuit.

The official has been banned from future swim meets hosted by the Duluth YMCA.

“The Duluth YMCA is saddened that the student, their family, and teammates had to endure this unacceptable behavior,” the organization said. “The Duluth YMCA will continue our ongoing commitment to train all staff and volunteers on diversity, equity, and inclusion.”

Let me guess. There is no slogans rule that get conveniently ignored when necessary.

      • Pope Jimbo

Is that what they meant by “without being performatve”? Because I honestly don’t know what that means.

      • rhywun

        I dunno, I don’t speak post-modern.

      • Ed Wuncler

The amazing thing about BLM is how it’s obviously a grift machine that has done nothing of value. I mean think about it. The NAACP (before it was skin suited) and other civil rights organizations brought gradual change during the 50’s and 60’s but BLM has done nothing since it’s existence began during the Obama Administration except burn cities down and collect millions upon millions of dollars from corporations and guilt ridden white liberals.

      • Pope Jimbo

Sounds like someone needs some training in diversity, equity and inclusion. Better book your flight to Duluth.

      • Fourscore

She ultimately got her wet dream, allowed to participate and all.

    Papers please.

Since February 4, the mandate of imposing full and booster vaccination from Austrian citizens has entered force in the country. As a result, President Alexander Van der Bellen has signed the new law, according to which all adults residing in the country have to be vaccinated or risk being fined €600, starting from March 15.

Except for specific categories, such as pregnant people, those with health conditions affected by vaccines, and those who have been previously infected with COVID-19, the rest are required to get vaccinated, SchengenVisaInfo.com reports.

From March 15, authorities will begin conducting random checks for vaccination certificates, including traffic stops. Moreover, according to this vaccine mandate, which is set to expire on January 31, 2024, people can be fined up to four times a year, with fines increasing up to €3,400.

Old habits die hard, I guess.

Rep. Jamie Raskin slapped with ethics complaint over failure to report wife’s huge stock payout

Democratic Rep. Jamie Raskin was hit Monday with an ethics complaint over his failure to properly disclose stock shares that his wife – President Biden’s nominee to be the Federal Reserve’s top banking regulator – received for her work at a Colorado-based financial technology company…

Jamie Raskin disclosed information about the transaction in August 2021 – eight months after Sarah Bloom Raskin sold 195,936 shares of Reserve Trust for $1.5 million, according to a federal financial disclosure. The document listed the initial transaction date as Dec. 18, 2020…

Lawmakers’ spouses are allowed to trade in companies or industries that their partners may help regulate. But Jamie Raskin’s failure to promptly disclose the shares that his wife sold marks a violation of the Stop Trading on Congressional Knowledge Act. The law – frequently referred to as the STOCK Act – was passed in 2012 in an attempt to increase transparency on Capitol Hill by making it illegal for members of Congress and their families to profit from inside information and requiring lawmakers to report stock trades to Congress within 45 days.

Poor guy is going to have this on his permanent record. Other than that nothing else will happen and his wife will be destroying our economy.

    • R C Dean

Lawmakers’ spouses are allowed to trade in companies or industries that their partners may help regulate.

You can tell the lawmakers wrote the rules. EVerywhere else in the known universe, that is community property, and the lawmaker has an equal claim on the proceeds.

It’s not like Putin is going to carpet bomb Kiev.

During six hours of closed meetings with House and Senate lawmakers on Thursday, the officials warned that if Mr. Putin chose the most aggressive of his options, he could quickly surround or capture Kyiv, the capital, and remove the country’s democratically elected president, Volodymyr Zelensky. They also warned that the invasion could prompt an enormous refugee crisis on the European continent, sending millions fleeing.

The officials stressed that U.S. intelligence analysts still did not assess that Mr. Putin had made a final decision to invade. But satellite imagery, communications among Russian forces and images of Russian equipment on the move show that he has assembled everything he would need to undertake what the officials said would constitute the largest military operation on land in Europe since 1945.

They also warned of enormous possible human costs if Mr. Putin went ahead with a full invasion, including the potential deaths of 25,000 to 50,000 civilians, 5,000 to 25,000 members of the Ukrainian military and 3,000 to 10,000 members of the Russian military. The invasion, they said, could also result in one million to five million refugees, with many of them pouring into Poland.

    That would be problematic.

    • Compelled Speechless

Has Poland thought about moving? Seems like they’re in a rough neighborhood.

      • Urthona

Well half of them moved to the US at one point.

Everything that the Left does is to project power. The Chicago Teacher Union when they went on strike a couple of years ago convinced me of the Left’s need to project their power. Lori Lightfoot was not their preferred candidate so when she won and started negotiating their contracts, despite it being a generous contract, CTU pushed the table aside, shat on her, and then immediately went on strike simply because they were throwing a hissy fit that Periwinkle (their candidate) lost the mayor’s election.

      • rhywun

Yeah, the teachers unions run pretty much every large city in the US. Money talks.

      • Count Potato

Chicago was better when it was run by the mob. Not only were they more honest, Al Capone had the decency not to fuck with anyone’s kids.

We’re saved! DR. Jill Biden is coming to town to talk about the rising costs of child care.

MINNEAPOLIS — First Lady Dr. Jill Biden will return to Minnesota on Feb. 9 alongside Health and Human Services Secretary Xavier Becerra.

The visit, meant to highlight the American Rescue Plan’s investments in child care, will bring Dr. Biden to the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis.

According to the White House, Dr. Biden, Secretary Becerra, Governor Tim Walz and Lt. Gov. Peggy Flanagan will all host a listening session at the U of M around 1 p.m. CT Wednesday.

In a recent visit to the University of Minnesota, Walz and Flanagan used the school’s Institute of Child Development as the backdrop to announce the administration’s $2.7 billion “local jobs and projects” plan. The institute is currently getting a major rebuild thanks to money from the $1.9 billion bonding bill approved by the 2020 legislature.

And teaming her up with King Walz? What problem can’t those two solve?

I sure am glad we are finally spending money on Child Development research. For too long have we had no idea as a society what is good for children. Those little bastards are black boxes and no one knows what to do with them.

Update on my friend with COVID. She will be taken off the respirator on the 22nd, the viewing will be the 24th, and the funeral on the 25th. Sadly, my surgery is the 22nd and I was told to plan on a 2-night stay. I may not make it out by the 25th.

This will be the fourth funeral I will have missed due to medical issues. I missed my beloved aunt’s funeral because I was in my third trimester and it was 1500 miles away. A dear friend’s funeral I missed because I had a blistering sinus infection. I missed another friend’s funeral (COVID, came on fast and killed him) because I was over at THIS friend’s house, helping her. And now SHE’s going to die and I can’t be there.

I will be going to visit her as often as I can between now and then, but the facility has a 2-visitors-per-day rule and she’s gonna have 2-3 congregations’ worth of visitors in the next 2 weeks.

    This sucks.

    • Mojeaux

Let me rephrase. She does not currently HAVE COVID. She DID have COVID when I took her to the hospital in August. This is situation is a complication of COVID.

    • Scruffy Nerfherder

      Sorry

    • Sensei

      So sorry Mojeaux.

    • grrizzly

Very sorry. It’s not common to see that the person is still alive but the funeral date is already finalized.

      • db

We had a similar situation with my Dad, as he had been very healthy prior to his burst aneurysm, and they kept his body alive for 3 days because of his organ donor status.

      • Mojeaux

        It’s quite disconcerting, actually.

    • db

So sorry to hear this Mojeaux. She has been fortunate to have a friend like you.

    • Count Potato

      Sorry 🙁

    • Pope Jimbo

Uffda. So sorry for your loss Mojeaux.

      Funerals suck for everyone.

My sister and I were lucky in that our parents both wanted to be cremated. That gave us the flexibility to have the memorial service much later, so we had started to cope with the loss. I can’t even imagine trying to go through all that stuff while you are trying to deal with the loss of a loved one.

I hope you are able to make it. I think that it was far more important that you were a good friend while they were still alive.

    • Yusef drives a Kia

I’m so sorry Mo, I pray for her and you,

“My child is traumatized from watching the Gestapo deport her grandparents. We got our own deportation order this week and she’s freaking out. Does anyone know of a good Reichbahn station that will reassure her when we leave?”

  31. Count Potato

“As the SARS-CoV-2 virus continues to kill thousands of Americans each week, bioethicist Parker Crutchfield has suggested a controversial approach to battling the pandemic — namely a “morality pill.” Specifically, he suggests that widespread administration of psychoactive drugs could provide “moral enhancement” that would make people more likely to adhere to social norms such as wearing masks and adhering to social distancing guidelines.

Crutchfield — an Associate Professor of Medical Ethics, Humanities and Law at Western Michigan University — acknowledges that the idea is “far out” and controversial. But he does note that well-known chemicals, such as oxytocin and psilocybin (the active ingredient in “magic mushrooms”) can lower aggression and increase empathy towards others, and thus potentially “boost” our “cooperative, pro-social behavior.”

Why do ethicists always seem to advance ex post facto rationalizations for abhorrent proposals and behaviors that align with their political proclivities and moral perversions? Get fucked guy.

      • Scruffy Nerfherder

Because their main source of employment opportunities exist almost solely because of government largesse.

Most universities are just there to launder theories in favor of government power and call it philosophy, science, or even ethics.

A conservative majority was elected to a nearby school district in November, and they’ve now sacked the district superintendent because he was into continued mask mandates and other stuff. So some students staged a walkout.

What the fuck is wrong with kids these days? And what’s the over/under on the teachers “convinced” them to do it?

They can be serve detention after school. 1 day for every minute they missed class.
