Our weather has been absolutely gorgeous for the last week or so. Mid-80s for highs with about zero humidity, mid-60s at night. I think this might be the last weekend of it, but with the humidity gone it has been amazing. I understand why people come visit. Kids have started making daily use of the pool, it’s great.
I can only imagine the kind of crazy MTG can generate in 3 hours of talking.
If law enforcement is not a profession, then it must be a skilled trade?
I assume the Secret Service is hiring prostitutes and protecting themselves.
Well this crazy nutter definitely saved the taxpayers some trial and imprisonment money.
My kids watched Sing 2 and this song has been stuck in my head for a week.
Maricopa County Superior Court Judge Stephen Hopkins disagreed, ruling that, “Historically, law enforcement has not been thought of as a ‘profession.’ ”
Not sure why this would surprise anyone. LEOs (and public schoolteachers, for that matter) are low-level bureaucrats, albeit with exceptional PR and an overwrought sense of entitlement.
Shit ruling.
Clearly the only profession is being a professor.
What about the oldest profession?
You leave Winston’s mom and the VP out of this.
I’ve always had a couple-three criteria for a profession:
Licensed, with some kind of peer/guild membership and disciplinary body, and personal liability for fuckups. Theoretically, the latter is true of everybody, but professionals can buy insurance specific to their professional liability. Cops and teachers fall out on one or two of those, so no.
Would you consider engineering a profession? While professional licensure exists for engineers, it is by no means necessary for practicing engineering. While it’s more common in disciplines like civil engineering or the parts of other disciplines when the product is for public use such as roads or buildings, it’s not required at all. Most chemical engineers have no need for a PE, even though we have the ability to get a license in the discipline.
Usually only engineers that interact with or produce work product for governmental bodies in some way, bother to get the PE.
I’d argue you with, but I’m too busy working at my trade this morning.
The article didn’t go into detail (shocker, I know) with the ruling, it seems like pretty twisted logic. But I don’t particularly mind seeing cops getting their panties in a bunch because a judge insulted them. Fuck cops.
I assume the Secret Service is hiring prostitutes and protecting themselves.
They’ve got Rosemary Woods on the payroll.
Poor Ol’ Joe, can’t even get a week end off without the nosy neighbors wanting to watch.
No one seems to pay much attention when he’s doing the people’s business, why would we care in he’s trying to catch up on his homework on week ends?
Let’s go Brandon.
I recall Obama’s pledge to keep a public record of all visits to the White House followed by setting up meetings away from the White House.
That sounds awful. It’s 40 here and I just opened the windows to air out the house after winter.
The candidacy challenge was initiated by a group of Georgia voters, who are working with a coalition of liberal activists and constitutional scholars. They face an uphill climb to remove Greene from the ballot, and the judge on Friday appeared skeptical of some of their arguments.
Their lawyers grilled Greene about her ties to the far-right provocateurs and extremist groups who fueled the carnage at the Capitol. But her testimony did not establish that she had been aware of plans for violence or that she had coordinated with any rioters — and she deflected many questions about her activities before January 6 by saying more than 50 times that she couldn’t remember.
“I was asking people to come for a peaceful march, which is what everyone is entitled to do under their First Amendment, but I was not asking them to actively engage in violence or any type of action,” Greene testified, pushing back on the assertion that she had aided the insurrection.
Burn the witch.
I seem to remember- wasn’t there footage of her inside the building tellling people to be peaceful and leave? I think she had jumped right out into the crowd to try to get them to go back outside. Was it her or another person?

You have the right to remain silent, if anything you say has been in a movie, that may be used against you.
WTF??
The defense should have responded.
Apparently, referencing the year 1776 is a call for violence.
The violence started in 1775.
Accurately stating history is hate speech. Report yourself to the local BLM for reprogramming.
So if she and Orange are “responsible” for the “insurrection”, that means they can let out those hundreds of political prisoners they locked up, right?

Trump’s “Truth Social” seems to be live, now.
Does glibertarians have an account? Even if it lasts for a shorter time than CNN+, I think glibertarians should have a presence.
[waits for Swiss to post the “Truth Social Challenge”]
I’ll be surprised if that survives. After what gab had to do in order to keep going, I doubt Trump has the patience or the initiative to do the same.
The outcome in the case could have national implications, because liberal attorneys have said they will mount a similar challenge against Trump if he runs again for president in 2024.
Without direct evidence linking Greene to any rioters, the challengers focused on her rhetoric and how her calls to action in the weeks before January 6 had potentially inspired the insurrection.
“She was one of several leaders who gathered the kindling, who created the conditions, who made it possible for there to be an explosion of violence at the Capitol on January 6. And then, she dropped the match,” Andrew Celli, lawyer for the challengers, said in his closing arguments. “Now, she comes into this courtroom and says she’s surprised and appalled that a fire burned.”
Without direct evidence, they will rely on smears and innuendo.
Process = punishment.
Her attorney, James Bopp Jr., called the hearing a “political show trial” and said the affair was a massive violation of her constitutional rights. When the challengers questioned Greene, Bopp repeatedly interrupted with objections — and the judge agreed on several key occasions, leading him to rein in the challengers and telling them at one point, “You are pushing the envelope.”
He objected, and the judge agreed? The fix is in. Next stop, fascist tyranny.

Why just dui’s?
Good point. Any conviction for reckless driving involving a death should warrant the same treatment. Drag racing on a public street, etc…
This makes more sense but you can’t showboat for MADD with it.
How much do prisoners earn?
Probably just “easy target” is the answer, but a really good point. It would be interesting if places with gang violence like Chicago or whatnot implemented this for any manslaughter or homicide of a parent.
Of course — then my brain kicks in a bit after my emotions and I start wondering — just how do they determine the level of child support? As if the payer was the parent (in other words, as much as they think they can milk them for?) An amount as if the *deceased* were still alive? Is it left to family court as a follow on to a criminal proceeding? And how does this tie in with the ever-more ridiculous lowering of what is “DUI” these days? (Anything above 0.0 including no mouthwash seems to be the trend..)
Will desperate but enterprising parents lurk outside of golf / country clubs to pay their kids’ college tuition? Am I channeling Judge Nap for some reason? Where is Task Force 34? The world wonders….
My mind went there too. Have a bunch of kids, then go playing in the street outside of a night club. Profit.
Hope the Brett-lings enjoyed Sing 2 — we watched it here the other day. Thought it was okay, not as good as the first (other than Wrath of Khan, few sequels are…) — especially thought the songs were better integrated in the first one.. here they seemed to just throw them in the background except for the big numbers at the end.
The GA judge should have never even started up the trial — AZ had more sense.

The burden of proof is on the challengers to show by a “more likely than not” standard that January 6 was legally an insurrection and Greene actively aided the insurrectionists.
Beaudrot, the judge, said the legal questions at play were “deadly serious” and repeatedly tried to maintain some level of order during the circus-like hearing.
Keep those kangaroos in line.
Throw her in the sea and see if she “more likely than not” sinks.
The Secret Service is not a travel agency, or an office management firm. Why would they keep tabs on who is permitted past them?

Saving the planet
President Joe Biden signed an executive order during his visit to Seattle Friday that aims to safeguard mature and old growth forests on federal land, step up forest maintenance and tree planting projects across the country, and combat global climate change by increasing diplomatic efforts to fight aggressive logging in the Amazon, Africa and Southeast Asia.
Among other things, the order directs the U.S. Forest Service and Bureau of Land Management to define and inventory mature and old growth forests within a year and develop policies to protect them from climate change and wildfire risks.
“We’ve reached the point where the crisis on the environment has become so obvious, with the notable exception of the former president, that we really have an opportunity to do things we couldn’t have done two, five, ten years ago,” Biden said before sitting down to sign the order in Seattle’s Seward Park.
As if any of that will matter when the ICBMs start flying.
“combat global climate change by increasing diplomatic efforts to fight aggressive logging in the Amazon, Africa and Southeast Asia.”
The earth was perfect before icky humans set out to despoil it. Greenies have a modest proposal which will finally provide a solution and restore Gaia to its’ pristine state
I wonder if it will make the news when Brazil, Africa, and Southeast Asia (why only the Southeast?) laugh in his face and refuse to lower their standard of living to satisfy smug American progressives.
That won’t stop them from cashing the checks.
Or the gas lines make their reappearance.
Pick one
1) inventory is actually completed, because everything is throw in that designation
2) one year stretches out to 20, meanwhile no logging permits/contracts are grants because the inventory isn’t done
Thank goodness he flew 3,000 miles in his personal 747 to give us that lecture.
But the order to inventory and protect “mature forests” is welcomed by environmental groups, who say the biggest threat to forests and the climate still comes from chainsaws, not wildfire. They are cautiously optimistic the order will establish long-sought policy guardrails on what can and can’t be cut, stopping the agencies from gradually whittling away what old growth still exists and establishing protections for maturing trees that are crucial for storing carbon.
“It’s not enough to just protect the remnant ancient forests,” said Steve Pedery, conservation director at Oregon Wild. “It’s the trees that are growing, these 80-plus year-old stands, that are a big deal. We’re thrilled to see them include these mature forests in the order.”
Just admit it. You want the complete cessation of natural resource extraction. We can all sit around our buffalo-dung fires eating bugs and singing Woody Guthrie songs.

Biden’s executive order does not ban logging mature or old growth trees, or provide any new protections for them. But the agencies are ordered to produce the inventory in an expedited time frame, put it out for public comment and develop “science-based” policies that address the threats from wildfire and climate impacts.
When is a ban not a ban?

“The US Secret Service has dubiously claimed to The Post that it has “no records” of visitors to President Biden’s two Delaware residences and therefore cannot divulge that information in response to a Freedom of Information Act request.”

Saving the planet, cont’d
A coalition of small-town mayors in the Kansas City area banded together to figure out ways their governments could take action against climate change and make their towns more livable and environmentally friendly.
Damien Boley, mayor of Smithville, Mo., has a vision for a walkable community with abundant green space. It may seem risky to go all-in on climate action in a conservative-leaning county, but Boley says there’s plenty of room to make real change.
Mike Kelly, the mayor of Roeland Park, Kan., agrees. “One of the things we heard on the doorsteps during our campaigns is this existential dread,” Kelly says. “Like, we have 10 years to save the planet, and nobody’s doing anything about it.”
They spent all their time talking to junior high students?
Um… there is a reason that “walkable communities” tend not to have much “abundant green space”.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and Republican Rep. Liz Cheney of Wyoming are among this year’s recipients of the John F. Kennedy Profile in Courage award for the “courage they’ve shown protecting democracy in the United States and abroad.”
Michigan Democratic Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson, Arizona Republican House Speaker Rusty Bowers and Fulton County, Georgia, election worker Wandrea “Shaye” Moss are also being honored with the award this year, the John F. Kennedy Library Foundation announced Thursday.
——-
The Profile in Courage Award, created in 1989, is presented to “public servants who have made courageous decisions of conscience without regard for the personal or professional consequences.”
Past recipients of the award include Presidents Barack Obama and George H. W Bush, Sens. Mitt Romney and the late John McCain, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, and the late US Rep. John Lewis.

Greetings from Evacuation Central.
I got the call about 4PM that a wildfire had started just SE of the house. I was alone and had to scramble to get my meds and some spare clothes. Of course I missed some of the wife’s essentials. Very strong winds yesterday, up to 50MPH blew the fire up quickly. We are in ABQ at a hotel and are going to try to get back in today, at least for some more supplies.
Oh man. We were a mile from the New Year’s fire evac zone. Of course we were traveling and I got to text with my neighbor while wondering if we were gonna come back to nothing.
Prayers for a safe ending.
Wow. I hope the winds are favorable to you and the firefighters get control of the fire before anyone gets hurt or has property loss. Good luck to you and Mrs. Hobbit.
Oy! That’s awful. G/d bless the both of you. I hope the fire is tackled quickly.
Glad you’re safe. Hope it steers clear of the property
Be well!
Hope everything is OK.
Hoping for the best. Fires suck.
Sorry to hear, stay safe.
Hope your home is safe, this has been a crappy April in NM.
Good luck, Hobbit.
Thanks, guys. Winds are forecast to be much lower and temps much cooler than yesterday. Dust storms were so bad that they closed the highway between Alb. and Santa Fe due to multiple wrecks.
April is a terrible month in NM. Howling winds and dust storms that blot out the sun.
Hoping for the best for you and the family, Hobbit.

A liberal author is lecturing “selfish” Americans for opposing the Biden administration’s student loan forgiveness policy, describing their disdain for it as “dark jealousy, bitterness and animosity.”
In a Thursday op-ed for NBC, Christina Wyman praised the administration’s attempts to provide “much needed financial relief” to those burdened by student loans, but claimed that opposing the policy simply displayed “another manifestation of our country’s fetish for individualism.”
Wheeeeee!
Not wanting the government to tax the poor so they can bail out the rich is selfish
Fuck off commie!
That is the correct response.
Watched “Everything Everywhere All At Once” last night. A couple wokish moments, but mostly well integrated and/or suborned to traditional family values (although even with Michelle Yeoh – looking great for her age) it’ll never screen in China.
A little long, but I’ll pick it up on BR. Definitely a good take on alternate dimensions handled in a pretty original way – some great performances and great to see Ke Huy Quan and James “Lo Pan” Wong back on the screen in some great roles. Very good action too – Jamie Lee Curtis was nuts.
Sadly….even after just a couple weeks out, it’s already down to one theater/one screen locally – and will probably be gone by next week. Recommend checking it out – I’ll prob watch Dr Strange when it comes out, but even with Sam Raimi…I’m not sure it’ll top this one for weirdness.
Speaking of new media…did anyone post this yet? First Kids in the Hall in 30 yrs could be pretty good – with all the same cast members.

James Hong (Lo Pan) is an absolute workhorse; I love him. He currently has four projects in post-production, his first IMDB credit was in 1954, and he has at least one credit every single year since.
Yeah…maybe just me and my viewing habits, but I haven’t seen him in a lot of stuff the last few years.
“It’s as if he thinks having a girlfriend is only about the sex.”

She noted that not all were happy with the administration’s decision: “Perusing the social media comments on nearly every story about loan forgiveness reveals a dark jealousy, bitterness and animosity toward those being given a taste of much-needed financial relief.”
“It’s selfish, it’s extreme, and it’s pure, unadulterated American,” Wyman said of the negative reaction. “The hotly contested student loan debate is merely another manifestation of our country’s fetish for individualism and the value it places on self-reliance and personal freedom above all else, demanding that we not look to the government for assistance of any kind.”
Okay.
If you hate it here so much, there’s the exit →
People run up debts and don’t want to pay them back – not selfish.
People pay off their own debts and then object to paying off other people’s debt – selfish.
That’s not _quite_ woodchipper worthy. But close.
