I think Robot Chicken did Palpatine’s early years just fine in the Star Wars Special III. A tale that some would say was…. unnatural.

Music wise — this calls to me today. Don’t know why… just does.

ā€œIan McDiarmid Says a Palpatine Prequel Series Would Be ā€˜Very Interesting’ā€

Will it go back to the days when he was the butler of a notorious British con artist who was ripping off wealthy and corrupt women in the south of France?

    • The Other Kevin

I think they might be stretching the Star Wars stuff a bit too much. With Marvel there are hundreds of characters to pull from, but for Star Wars it feels like, “Let’s do a series about the guy who got force choked by Vader that one time.”

      • Plisade

Palpatine has a very cool backstory, at least from the (un)canon(ned) books.

And I really want to see the Darth Bane series put to film. Those are my favorite books from the expanded universe.

      • SDF-7

I don’t trust them to do Bane anything near justice. Same reason I don’t expect the SW:KOTR remake to not screw with the characters and the plot.

      • Riven

Oh my word, I would love a Darth Bane series. I’ve reread his trilogy a few times, and I enjoy it more and more.

      • Compelled Speechless

I would also like to see a Darth Bane series. I want to see them tackle it along with a host of other great extended universe stories. As soon as they get rid of Kathleen Kennedy so she can’t ruin them.

      • Scruffy Nerfherder

I want the story of the guy who lost his arm in the Cantina and how he got fired, lost his kids, and became homeless.

      • SDF-7

Again, Robot Chicken is down the hall and to the left. šŸ˜‰

      • SDF-7

Ah… actually available as a clip. Enjoy.

      • Scruffy Nerfherder

I had no idea that existed, honestly.

      • Nephilium

The Dragonlance series of books got really bad near the end. At one point there was a whole book written about a character who existed for a couple of pages in one of the early books.

      • SDF-7

Yup — Chronicles and the Twins trilogy and then they really should have called it. The whole “let’s do a next generation… then let’s kill most of them off in the next book and get rid of most of the magic” didn’t do their universe any favors.

At least Palpatine has another skill to fall back on in case Emperor-ing goes south on him.

There is some good streaming stuff on the way. I’m looking forward to the new Mandalorian, and I hear they are making Daredevil season 4. Meanwhile, my youngest is being a jerk and binge watched Stranger Things today while I’m working.

  4. DEG

He incorporated a new type of ā€œskip-stopā€ elevator. These stopped only on every third floor, which both saved room for more units and encouraged a sense of community engagement by forcing residents to interact more.

“forcing residents to interact more”. Go fuck yourself.

Within five years of its launch, Yamasaki was regularly apologizing for his role in the project. Though the final design of the complex differed from his original vision, he came to question the core assumption behind the project: that peopleā€™s lives could be effectively engineered through urban design.

And he fucked a bunch of people’s lives over. I think his ancestors had an appropriate way to redeem himself.

    • DEG

And the politicians involved could join him.

Yeah I know, they’re all dead now.

    • Tonio

Did they prioritize elderly and disabled residents for floors with elevator service?

    • Tulip

A place with children and playgrounds and no bathrooms on the ground floor. Idiot.

      • Name's BEAM. James BEAM.

I couldn’t force myself to read the entire article; was there some offered reasoning behind that stupid little move?

      • Tulip

        No, not in the article.

      • Fatty Bolger

You have to read a linked article to find it, I think. They were part of the design, but cut by the government for cost reasons:

Even before it was completed, Pruitt-Igoe was not built as intended. Yamasaki had proposed a number of design elements which were never built: low-rise units dispersed among their larger counterparts, playgrounds, ground-floor restrooms, and additional landscaping were all deemed too expensive by the Federal Housing Administration and cut from the project. It was this constant emphasis on economy that dictated features like the skip-stop elevators, and which only hinted at the troubled times ahead.

It really highlights the difference between central planning and capitalism. With capitalism, the investors would have included all those things to make the complex more attractive to buyers and renters.

Time to mow the lawn. I’m going to drop this NH link about sign vandalism before I go:

A gun show scheduled to open Saturday in Concord was cleaning up vandalism outside the venue Friday.

The word “murderers” was spray-painted on signs pointing the way to the gun show. The show is being held for the first time in a couple of years because of the pandemic, and it comes just days after 19 children and two teachers were killed in a school shooting in Texas, something the show’s organizer called heartbreaking.

    • Plisade

“Murderers”? Did they think it was a pro-choice rally?

      • Sean

Rest assured, the vandal is 100% pro abortion.

  7. Tonio

Since this is the (mostly) pop culture links — I finally broke down and did the Paramount trial so I could watch Star Trek: Strange New Worlds. I like the design, I like the characters, but, yeah, only one episode in and the smug wokeness just pervades the joint.

    • R.J.

Sorry to hear it. Also not surprised.

    • SDF-7

Until the current crop of producers go, I’m going to assume anything is of equal quality to Discovery and Picard. So I won’t care.

And even then I’ll be very wary — like just because RTD is coming back to Doctor Who, I don’t think the pressures from the BBC and whatnot that helped lead to the Chibnall crap have gone away — so I’m in no real hurry to move away from my “Capaldi was the last actual Doctor” mode.

      • Tonio

I tried Discovery, and it never clicked with me.

I still maintain that Seth McFarlane’s “The Orville,” is the only worthy successor to TOS and “Enterprise.”

      • ron73440

        Galaxy Quest?

      • Tonio

That, too, but I was thinking series, not films. I resisted watching GQ for several years after its release. I was very pleasantly surprised. It was a loving parody, which is very difficult to pull off especially given subject matter with a rabid fanbase.

      • Fatty Bolger

The Orville? Talk about smug wokeness. After the 5th lecture or so from that smug piece of shit, I said “fuck this, why am I even watching this?” and quit.

Saint Louis is lucky they got rid of their Pruitt-Igoe. Many cities across the U.S. are still stuck with that shit – hundreds of them in NYC alone which supposedly need “repairs” whose cost jumps billions of dollars every year. They may not be Pruitt-Igoe-level hellscapes yet, but they’re fast approaching it.

I’ve been shopping for an accurate AR for a couple of months. Have one backordered but worried it might never show up. Anyhow, last weekend I was in a local shop checking out the Daniel Defense V7 Pro. Very nice but the store had it “marked down” to $2,000. More than I want to spend, and I’d get the MK12 if I did spend that much.

Iā€™ve been shopping for an accurate AR for a couple of months. Have one backordered but worried it might never show up.

Hang in there. I had a similar experience in 2012. I didn’t feel good about gun control during Obama’s second term and ordered an AR (Colt) on backorder from an online vendor days before the 2012 election. Sandy Hook happened a few weeks later. ARs were gone following the shooting, and if you could find one, it was at least double the markup. It took a few months but the vendor kept their word and shipped the AR to my LGS and charged me the backordered price and not the absurd amount they could get at time.

Tangentially, I also went to the LGS the night before the election and it looked like a hurricane had swept through. Empty shelves, both ammo and firearms. I got the last case of 9mm in the store.

    • one true athena

Though it seems true he had no other expenses, I’m wondering if he just took his mom or someone else’s card. Or paid cash that he stole from one of his relatives. “Convicted sex offender Harvey Weinstein is locked in a legal dispute with a young female artist over two crude sketches he made of her posing topless in 2019, DailyMail.com can reveal.

The New York City graffiti artist widely known as ANNA!, who for the first time is agreeing to reveal her true identity as 29-year-old Anna Barratt, is attempting to sell the two sketches as non-fungible tokens, or NFTs.

Barratt, who first met Weinstein through an art gallerist after he had been charged with sex crimes, declined to accuse him outright of sexual misconduct in an essay on her website and an interview with DailyMail.com.

After selling Weinstein three works for $5,000, Barratt says that she initially came up with the idea to pose topless for the disgraced movie mogul in a photo shoot with a disposable camera.

She said that he made the sketches and gave them to her during an ‘impromptu rehearsal’ for the proposed photo session, which never ultimately occurred.

Now, Weinstein’s attorneys are trying to block Barratt from selling the two sketches on the NFT auction site OpenSea, filing a complaint with the company insisting that as the artist of the two rough figure drawings, he is the copyright holder — and noting that he wrote ‘not to be reproduced’ on the sketches.”

I understand that over at the LP convention, the “Mises” gang got 61% of the delegates to oust the chair of the party. They needed 67% but appear to have seized control of the convention. Tough day. A 21 is enough to win?! Yikes. The Tundra-Line ratio was 7/14. The average score (37.4) was lower than yesterday when TARDis scored a 309. (3 chumps and 4 fewer players will do that Science Math!!11!). Quordlemetrics: 1 0 2 10 (2). Scrabble: 38

No-Chump Streak news: Sean keeps extending his streak; itā€™s up to 45 now. Grumbeltarian had a nice streak of 27 end today. Including Sean, there are now three players over 30 days, and seven at 19 days or longer. 17 players reported scores every day this week.

We gained a player (Give a hearty ā€œQuelloā€ to robc!) this week. Speaking of (sorta) newbies, Mojeaux finished the week with a pathetic/impressive average of 90. But if you throw out the four busts, sheā€™s got an average of 19.3. I see great potential!

There are a couple regulars that havenā€™t posted scores yet. Please post them when you can (or donā€™t) and Iā€™ll get you added to ā€œThe Spreadsheetā€. Sorry for the earlier than normal DQRā„¢Ā©Ā®, but I have sun and alcohol to absorb.

Have a great weekend, friends. Maybe Iā€™ll see you on the Zooms.

It’s like a sport from Stupid Hell, but hey, have fun….

      • MikeS

I will. You have fun throwing Tupper Wear lids around the park.

    • The Hyperbole

In Tournament news (Since MikeS is unreliable too busy), Grrizzly returns to the finals, if he can best whiz he will have a chance to redeem himself against the reigning champ Not Adahn. Now as much as I like a good Rocky style rematch I’ll be rooting for whiz, nothing against grrizz but I started backing whiz when he faced Sean and I don’t change horses midstream.

      • MikeS

Shoot. Forgot about the tourney. Thanks for the backup.

      • whiz

Thanks, I think, I hope that’s not the kiss of death šŸ™‚

The most frustrating thing is that, when the next NH gubernatorial election rolls around, it will be a decision between Sunnunnunnunuu and a dude(tte) who loudly proclaims that Stalin had some good ideas and also we need to mandate butt masks.

ā€œGet rid of Sunnunu in the primariesā€ wonā€™t work, because the field will be split among 28 candidates, and the most viable of these alternate candidates will eventually be revealed to have had a carnal intimate relationship with his cat.

I found the audiobook version of Jack Vanceā€™s ā€œEyes of the Overworldā€.

Favorite part is when Cugel the Clever finds something like a jellyfish, roasts and eats it and then tells the local wizard, and the wizard is, like, ā€œDude; Iā€™ve been trying to lure that thing out into the open for five hundred years!

Iā€™m very happy that Glibs is back online. This week has indeed been challenging, and I didnā€™t realize how much my emotional health needed this place as a touchstone until it was unavailable or un-updated.

I am a naturally happy person. But this week beat me up. It was a combination of SPā€™s passing, having to drive to San Diego for my husbandā€™s friendā€™s birthday and back (during which the verbal abuse was devastating but I had no choice but to keep driving), the Texas school shooting, and Mark Steynā€™s coverage of Davos.

    What a broken world.

Thank you , whoever is keeping the lights on at Glibs.

Heard that, Hayek. Never ends, does it?

Nope. Beats the alternative I guess.

You’ve had a rough run lately. Let’s just keep going. I got nothing else to do, anyways.
