Saturday evening, springtime links!

by | May 21, 2022 | Daily Links | 209 comments

I think I’ll drive up here next week and take some pictures.

Rain, snow, sun, hot, cold, what a weird spring it’s been. I have no idea how the crop season is going to go.

Links anyone?

“There will be blood.”

Doesn’t he have to do something first?

It doesn’t get more Texas than this.

So if the Australian government is moving left, does this mean they will more, or less likely to go full Beijing on their citizens?

Now that’s what I call a dying culture.

“Hey, Vlad? You forgot your compost.”

What a fucking fiasco.

Okay, that’s about it for that. Snark away, Glibs!

Go tranny to check another box?

      • Gender Traitor

        ::takes a bow::

      • Brochettaward

Using the lowercase of First in the context of claiming something to be a First is like using the n-word and the c-word all rolled into one. You are a reprehensible bigot.

      • R.J.

        fffffffffffffffffffffffff
        first

    • Tonio

He could run as an independent, which would suck votes from whoever the Democrats nominate.

    • rhywun

      Third Deblasio term is “something”.

Seriously, he hasn’t diverted from the far-left platform one bit, despite pretending to make noises to do so.

      • Sean

        That something is delusional.

  2. Yusef drives a Kia

It’s flipping back into the 50’s, I’m so sick of this stupid ass weather, it should be warm and sunny but I guess that’s only for California,
    GRRRRRR
    Tall Cans!

    • LCDR_Fish

Still over 95 here. Just gonna wait till tomorrow aft to finish mowing. Least it should be at least 10-15 degrees cooler for the long weekend.

      • Rat on a train

Cool and dry enough for a morning mow.

      • Gender Traitor

        Rat on a riding mower?

    • rhywun

It got very warm and sunny here once the fog blew off. Warm enough to drag out the AC for the season.

    • The Last American Hero

That’s Michigan. Give it 5 minutes and you’ll have beach weather.

  3. Tonio

Regarding Plan 75 — now I’m envisioning a STTOS episode about that, and what they do to the old people who take the payout but don’t show up for euthanasia.

  4. trshmnstr the terrible

Now that’s what I call a dying culture.

    Star Trek did it first.

    • Tonio

Ah. I was thinking of this episode. While it wasn’t about killing the old, it was about the state telling people when to show up at the disintegration booth.

      • trshmnstr the terrible

Yep, the TNG one is a rehash of the TOS one, but with killing the “elderly” threescores instead of the war casualties.

      • Chafed

        That was a fantastic episode.

  5. Yusef drives a Kia

    And Rammstein RULES!!!!!

    • MikeS

Indeed. The title track from that album is excellent, too.

    • MikeS

I bet you’d also like Eisbrecher

      FAKK

      Miststueck

      • rhywun

I’d swear that is the same singer of this more “electro” band I like a lot – but it isn’t.

Good stuff – must check out ?

      • MikeS

You know, these guys are pretty good. A little more of the club/dance sound than I care for, but not bad.

      • MikeS

Wow. They really do sound similar.

Eisbrecher mostly stays heavy, but they definitely recognize the Industrial/Electro roots of Neue Deutsche Härte.

        Alkohol (Roter Sand Remix)

      • rhywun

I’m all into electro and yeah this is adjacent – I’ve certainly heard of them before if not explored.

      • MikeS

I forgot about their early (first?) album, Sunde (because it’s pretty electro heavy…to my ears.) You might really dig it.

      • rhywun

        Toll!

      • MikeS

        Genießen!

      • rhywun

Rotersand and SITD (the remix artists) are two of the (many) big German electro acts, BTW.

    • Ted S.

And it’s amazing how many videos only have the first movement.

      • Yusef drives a Kia

no, it’s 254 variations of the same movement, it is Vivaldi you know.

      • Yusef drives a Kia

        also, Alana Youssefian, well done!

    • Yusef drives a Kia

      Of course, TY Ted,

      • Yusef drives a Kia

ah, I did not know, thanks Messy and Tonio.

    • Tonio

      • Tonio

        Thank you.

If a principal systems engineer who knows some stuff would be of help, please reach out (handle at protonmail)

      • slumbrew

Dammit, this was the perfect time to break out the “what I do have are a very particular set of skills; skills I have acquired over a very long career” line and I just whiffed on it.

      • Grosspatzer

My skillz are highly specialized around all things database and SQL. And can write passable python code. Not sure they’d be of any use, but I am available if needed.

      • robc

Ditto, but I also can fight thru perl reg-ex.

      • Tonio

Thanks, everyone. We’ll reach out if needed.

      • Rat on a train

I can help build a DevSecOps pipeline if that will help.

Jones was taken to the nearby Winkler County jail.

    Aayyyyy!

    • Grosspatzer

A Special Ranger with the Texas and Southwestern Cattle Raisers Association arrested Loving County Judge Skeet Lee Jones on Friday. Jones was charged with theft of livestock and engaging in organized crime.

Loving County? Skeet? Is this a Tex Avery cartoon?

Also, theft of livestock was a hangin’ offense not so long ago.

      *Checks price of steak*

      Hangings may make a comeback.

      • Zwak, who counted all his blessings, and counted only one.

I have been told only certain types of people are hanged, and that it is now a crime.

  8. one true athena

After the resounding success of Bloomberg and DeBLasio’s presidential runs, how can it not be a victory for Adams?

I hope this was just some flunky floating a trial balloon and not Adams actually thinking this.

    • rhywun

I would expect nothing less. He is very full of himself.

      • LCDR_Fish

DeBlasio is apparently gonna run for congress. That’ll be a joke.

      • Grosspatzer

Never underestimate the stupidity OF NYC voters. They elected him to two mayoral terms.

  9. rhywun

So if the Australian government is moving left,

Was honestly surprised to read that the national government wasn’t already full left.

    • Raven Nation

It’s more complicated than what the AP wrote (yeah, I know that’s surprising). As of right now, the Labour Party has only picked up 4 seats. The Lib/Nats have lost, maybe 23, which is, of course big. The big problem for Australia down the line is that the Greens won 2 new seats. Ten were won by independents, but most of those ran as “teal independents” against traditional Lib/Nat seats and ran EXPLICITLY on reducing greenhouse emissions faster than either Labour or the Lib/Nats.

The most likely outcome will be a minority Labour government reliant on the support of a group of independents who think that CAGW is the only issue worth worrying about.

  10. The Hyperbole

Oops, I dropped the DQR and Championship update in the dead thread, so if anyone’s interested you’ll have to go there.

    • Ted S.

      UCS is interested.

      • The Hyperbole

It’s a lot of work and I’ve considered shuttering the entire thing but I know how devastated he and Bro would be so I keep plugging away. I do it for them, I’m too damn nice for my own good.

      • Name's BEAM. James BEAM.

. . . I’m too damn nice for my own good.

I’ve always said that about you.

        . . .

What? Stop staring at my nose.

      • MikeS

        ahem

      • Spudalicious

        Uhhh.

      • MikeS

Now what the fuck is the “Common Letter Distribution”?

      • The Hyperbole

It’s exactly what it says it is, the first number is the number of letters that are in all four solution words, the second number is the number of letter in three of the solution words, the third number is the number of letters in two of the solution words , the last number is for the letters that are only in one solution word, the number in parenthesis is for the letters that repeat in a word. Can’t be much more obvious than that.

      • MikeS

This is turning into a no-shit job.

      • MikeS

        Also; nowhere near obvious.

    • trshmnstr the terrible

QuordleBot had a lackluster first showing. The first seed word pretty much dictates how the game will go. The first guess eliminates between 80 and 90% of the wordlist (I’m using the list whiz used for his article). There’s a huge difference between having 1100 words left and having 500 words left for guess 2.

I’m trying to find a way to do better than randomly selecting from a huge seedlist (2k words or so) for the first guess. Algorithm for guess 2 needs some work, as well. It gets rather, erm, compute intensive if there are 1100 words left.

      • MikeS

I’d would be interesting to see a bot army with different seed words. See how they all compete.

      • rhywun

We can science the shit out of this thing.

      • MikeS

Until the bots starting winning and take all the fun out of it and we all quit.

        *UCS wet dream

      • rhywun

I already quit but I’m interested in seeing how the bot army does.

      • grrizzly

I had to make 3 perfect guesses today to just stay in the game. And there are no clues which ones to pick.

      • trshmnstr the terrible

I can just run the thing 10 times.

From what I’ve seen, the current bot would score 7 of the 10 at or a few points above the Tundra line, 1-2 in the teens, and 1-2 in the chump/near-chump range. I need to narrow down the seedlist to shift some of those less desirable outcomes in a better direction, but I haven’t found a good way to do that quite yet.

The Japan euthanasia for over 75 yo has already been done by ST:TNG. Counselor troi’s mom (Mrs Roddenberry) fell in love with a dude whose planet exterminated anyone over 60. She wanted him to run away and live out his natural lifespan with her, but he was programmed socially to do it and felt it was the noble thing to walk to his death.

We have a bunch of sheep socially programmed to end their own existence for the greater good. It’s disgusting.

Could be worse; Logan’s Run had them off themselves before 30!

    • LCDR_Fish

Seems like a slightly odder take coming from Japan though – In the Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex movie a few years back (“Solid State Society”) – there was a plot where an AI was “kidnapping” and brainwashing “unwanted” kids and registering them to dying oldsters who had no relatives – so that they could pass on their inheritance, etc – rather than having the government confiscate it….folks always have a desire to live on – vice giving up.

      • l0b0t

Roujin Z featured a robotic hospital bed that would do anything to preserve the life of its elderly patient.

    • TARDis

Logan’s Run had them off themselves before 30!

Best sex is between 30-40. Can’t have that.

    • l0b0t

Speaking of Roddenberry, I’ve become absolutely enamored of his pre-Trek show The Lieutenant, about a young 2ndLt. in the USMC. The writing is mature, intelligent, and compelling (far more so than anything currently airing). It’s packed with fantastic guest stars – Bill Bixby, Ricardo Montalban, Dennis Hopper, Nichelle Nicholls, and Neville Brand (actual USMC Silver Star recipient). Y’all should check it out – https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SYE-Xyo4KBo&list=PLAVmnbCRuGgnwi3SmsSw0dsJL9-oFdUkx

My husband has recently gotten addicted to MeTV which shows old tv (esp Hawaii 5-0 Classic which he loves) so I get lots of updates about Ricardo Montalban’s guest appearances. Hardest working man in show biz for a decade apparently!

      • Grumbletarian

Ricardo had a tough time finding work after Star Trek II. Nobody wanted to hire an ex-Kahn.

      • one true athena

yeah. Lockdowns, I think, making people more anxious and antisocial, plus just the general awareness that you can get away with a lot more after the general rot in the law. You might get caught, but nothing will happen even if you are, so why not do whatever you want.

Wife told me about a small example of this at the local high school. Evidently the senior prank devolved into completely trashing the school to the point where they had to cancel the last two days of classes.

Senior pranks are usually funny, and are often getting close to that line of “too much” (e.g. dragging some old car into the cafeteria) , but wrecking up the place to the point that they cancel school? Maybe down at PS 159 down in the shit part of the city. Around here in the nicer suburbs? Unheard of.

“Mr. Musk has not helped the stock price by turning his bid to buy Twitter into a financial soap opera. His antics have reinforced the perception that Tesla lacks an independent board of directors that could stop him from doing things that might damage the company’s business and brand,” The Times reported. “Tesla’s image is under pressure in ways that could hurt the automaker among the environmentally conscious, politically liberal customers who have long been its biggest customer base. The California Department of Fair Employment and Housing is suing Tesla, accusing it of allowing racial discrimination and harassment to flourish at its factory in Fremont, Calif., near San Francisco.”

My step-son is just barely older than you but he is in the same boat. I trust that you’ll be able to weather the storm better than he will. Come home when you can. We’re all rooting for you, Dent-Head!

Indeed Kid needs to get out and home in the worst way.

Batching it again this weekend. Hopefully when my liver bursts forth it will just scurry away and die rather than become a xenomorph.

Good morning, Quordlers and lurkers! It’s cloudy and a bit breezy, but still pleasant at Tranquility Base this morning, recovering from the thunderboomers that passed through last evening. We were lucky, as it turns out – no tree damage evident on our street. When I went out on a commando raid last night – to procure the correct brand of potato salad from not-our-usual grocery – I discovered that a major thoroughfare just a couple blocks east of us was blocked by a fallen tree, and I saw another large, broken tree nearby. Our trees appear to be OK, including our remaining tulip poplar, which is blooming in the back yard! ??

Mocha iced coffee in the mug, and my favorite Sunday morning choral music show on the satellite radio! I hope all of you have a day this pleasant!

      Good Morning GT:
Our rescue dog (here for 3 weeks before forever home) and three other dogs, and a couple do not fit well in a bed.
      Up way to early.

Good news is that our homemade yogurt form the mini-cow is rather good.
      Please dont tell the FDA.

      Hope your Sunday is excellent.

Good morning, ‘bodru! I can sympathize with your pet predicament – even two cats (one of them very large) and a couple in a full-size bed makes a Saturday afternoon nap a bit of a challenge.

Has your bottle-feeding lambie rejoined the flock for keeps? Or is it still hanging out in your office, wreaking occasional havoc?

Curious what “style” yogurt you’re getting – Greek or otherwise?

      • robodruid

Babe, or bookworm is now on the back porch.
She spent time with the flock yesterday, but ran back to the house with me (and through the gate) when I backed off.

      Morning

Good on the trees, GT, e had some wind a few days ago, apparently sort of strong. I haven’t been back in the woods to see any damage. Wood tick season so I try to avoid deliberately exposing myself (to the ticks).

Wise move, 4(20)! Ticks are icky! ?
