Saturday evening somnolent links

Can haz nap.

Checking in with TPTB, this appears to be a lazy, relaxed Saturday. So be it. It’s cool and damp here, which is perfect for a day on the patio under the heater.

Let’s see if there’s anything link wise to look at, whilst reclining in comfort.

Lower crime rate? And the drugs are cheaper, because you’re not paying import fees.

Oh the jokes…there are so many jokes…I don’t know where to start…

I feel really sorry for the poor bastard that has to carry this “nuclear football”.

Put down the controller and go for a walk, for christ sake.

I fucking loved this movie.

Sounds like a Prince song.

Enjoy this one. Take your time. Savor it.

Okey doke. Time to kick the dog off the couch. Peace out.

Was never a huge fan of ET – all the moreso with the [IIRC 25th anniversary release] where Spielberg replaced all the FBI guns with walkie-talkies. Almost as bad as the Lucas special editions.

    • LCDR_Fish

Productive day today though – picked up stuff at Lowes, got a great lunch at Park Lane Tavern (F’burg) including Beef Wellington and (special) Queen’s Jubilee cake desert (Duchesse de Bourgogne and Harp Lager featured again), then Maverick in the theaters (great flick – a lot more fun than the original IMO), a new [used] bookcase from Habitat ReStore, and a dope haircut from the ajima’s at my barber shop. Feel pretty good right now…

      • hayeksplosives

F’burg is awesome! Assuming you mean Fredericksburg VA.

      • LCDR_Fish

        Yep, same ol, same ol.

Heading to Norfolk tomorrow for a week (or mostly) on a carrier.

    • Chafed

I had no idea he did that. I never liked the movie. It’s good to know he is undermining his own work.

    • The Bearded Hobbit

Saw the original once and never again. Really dislike movies with smart-assed, foul-mouthed kids in it. I am a “seen but not heard” type of curmudgeon.

      • Fourscore

Didn’t see it, now I don’t have too. Saved me some time and money. Thanks BH.

    • DrOtto

The special effects were incredible. They had malaise era Ford sedans fishtailing around corners. I’m not sure how they did it.

    • cavalier973

      E.T. shot first!

    • Mojeaux

      I hated ET.

      • rhywun

Everything I heard about it growing up made me hate it, so I never watched it.

      • Zwak, who counted all his blessings, and counted only one.

I saw it when it came out, so 11 I guess? Didn’t like it then, don’t like it now.

        Schmaltzy crap.

  2. Nephilium

Have you seen that E.T. got “special edition”ed? No more guns, replaced by walkie-talkies and the like.

In other movie re-release news… paging OMWC.

    • Old Man With Candy

There’s a reason I haven’t been in a movie theater for 15 years or more.

  3. Grosspatzer

    Nuclear football indeed.

Federal Protection Service members are ‘responsible for collecting Putin’s bodily waste’ in packets which are kept inside briefcase until returning to Russia

It’s a shitty job but someone’s got to do it. I’d like to see Mike Rowe cover this one.

    • Sensei

Are you in a crappy mood?

      • Grosspatzer

I am a little pissed off.

      • Fourscore

How did this story leak out?

      • Spudalicious

I’m shart someone will get to the bottom of it.

      • R.J.

Dammit. I got here late. You guys are already on a streak.

        Welcome to my newsletter!

    • rhywun

      • Fourscore

Looks like a lot of paper work involved.

      • straffinrun

You’ve got Julia Louise Dreyfus as a source. Must be true.

    • Aloysious

I’m sewer there’s more to this story than meets the brown eye.

    • cavalier973

      He wasn’t just Putin

  4. rhywun

    I fucking loved this movie.

    I’ve never seen it. ?‍♂️

    • cavalier973

It’s like “Stranger Things”, just not as strange.

  5. Gustave Lytton

LGS stood firm on the MPX price, so no dice. They finally had a 20ga Shockwave. Other shop still had a 642 in the case. Both seemed to still be well stocked, although the first mentioned their inventory in the back is drying up and other is thinking another month.

    • Spudalicious

I wouldn’t expect any LGS to budge on prices right now.

      • Gustave Lytton

It was on “sale” and store manager was offering lower last week so I thought why not give it a shot. Price was too high imo, even after the sale price.

  6. The Late P Brooks

A Procter & Gamble spokesperson, which owns the Tampax and Always brands, blamed higher demand on an ad campaign the company unveiled in July 2020 with the comedian Amy Schumer, Time reported.

Since then, “retail sales growth has exploded,” the spokesperson said.

    Bloody Hell.

    • Spudalicious

That’ll leave a stain on the market.

      • Fourscore

        Must be some strings attached.

      • Gender Traitor

Well, with Amy Schumer plugging them…yeah.

      • R.J.

After her commercials, the price grew wings and flew away.

      • Grosspatzer

Price gouging evil corporation is padding the bottom line.

    • The Gunslinger

Sounds like they’ve seen a heavy flow of orders.

    • Aloysious

The Detroit Red Wings and the makers of Red Wing boots should join forces, and endorse a quality product to plug the gaping hole in the market.

  7. The Late P Brooks

The victim fled with his rifle while the accused robber, who had been shot several times, remained on the scene. A third man then also shot him, police said.

What an absolute monument of fuckery.

Please don’t open carry, people. And if you’re going to open carry, then please, please, for the love of big tits, don’t open carry a rifle.

  8. Nephilium

It’s a Saturday, and nothing interesting is going on in my life tonight, so here’s the Zoom/Happy Hour/Gabfest for tonight. As is tradition, I’ll kick it off at 20:00 Eastern.

  9. The Late P Brooks

It’s a very nice day. Lots of motorcyclists out, which causes me to muse: how many people out there are going to buy a motorcycle to save gas on their commute? How many of those people will end up smeared on the pavement?

    • Fourscore

Chilly in the winter in your neighborhood as well

    • Nephilium

Local news had some articles with bicycle shops that have seen a big increase in purchases, repairs, and tune-ups… even after the huge increase in demand and shortages in 2020.

    • Don escaped Texas

Average person drives 14,000 miles: 500 gallons or so. A $2 increase per gallon is a whopping $1,000 a year, which some think is a lot of money and I don’t disrespect that opinion, but, you can’t buy any answer to the gasoline problem for $1,000 a year.

I remember when this happened under GWB43: Texans gnawing their nails and selling their Hummers over the price of gasoline. Newsflash, Texas: you had no business buying a Hummer at all if you’re the kind of person that $100 a month hurts.

      • trshmnstr the terrible

        ^^

It’s all panic. Anybody who runs the numbers can see the impact and determine what does and doesn’t make sense.

When you’re part of “what’s the monthly payment” brigade, an extra $80/month can absolutely wreck the good thing you have going. A large proportion of people are right on the edge of having too much month for the money as it is.

One trick I picked up a long time back was to never adjust my gas budget downward. As we bought more fuel efficient cars and as prices fluctuated and as our driving habits changed, we kept our gas budget the same and used the extra as a slush fund. Now that prices are going up, we’re still budgeted for $150/month, which still more than pays for our consumption.

      • Tundra

Unless you have a so-called Eco-Boost that gets less than 19 MPG. In which case you’re looking at closer to 800 gallons.

Your point is still. Gas is still the cheapest thing about a vehicle. Fucking sales tax on a new vehicle wipes out several years of gas “savings”.

      • Chafed

Look at Dave Ramsey over here.

    • EvilSheldon

Buy one, no, but I’m getting the one I haven’t ridden in a while tuned up. $1000 isn’t anything that’s gonna make or break me, or even significantly affect my lifestyle, but it is a couple cases of ammo that I’d otherwise do without…

    Great music selection Spud!

    • Aloysious

      +1 Yusef. Love Stevie.

  11. Tundra

    Spud!

Thanks, brother! I love that SRV song.

Feeling a little lazy here, too. It’s 96 and I feel like surfing the sofa and watching the Rangers dribble it down their legs again. So disappointing.

Looking forward to the big move?

    • rhywun

Yeah, it’s going to be an earlier than expected exit for the Rangers. By which I mean, I expected a game 7. Though to be fair, I expected them to tank in the first round so… yay.

      • Tundra

I think they could have won, goddammit! I’m tired of the fucking Lightning.

Although the consensus appears to be that they are just too young. They are a nice team.

      • rhywun

I’m tired of the fucking Lightning.

        No kidding.

  12. The Late P Brooks

it is a couple cases of ammo that I’d otherwise do without…

Exactly. At the margin, this stuff matters.

I have a Honda which gets 40mpg, and I have a pickup which gets 13. Guess which one I drive every day. I don’t like the idea of paying ten bucks for a round trip to the grocery store to grab a gallon of milk.

    • Tundra

Yeah, my wife’s Passat gets amazing mileage, so I’ll take that a lot for short trips. My pickup does somewhat better than that, but now that I’m 100% wfh, my driving has plummeted.

      • LCDR_Fish

My RAV4 gets <25mpg….irritating on the whole but I love driving it and it's paid off – and I don't need a car payment.

      • Tulip

I have a RAV4 as well. It does well on the highway and is much better than my old firebird. I still miss the firebird, but the dog wasn’t comfy. And, now I can buy mulch etc and not need delivery.

      • The Bearded Hobbit

Hence the popularity of Station Wagons>Mini-vans>SUVs. Suburban folks like having the convenience of hauling stuff.

A question that occurred to me today: How do people who travel solely by mass transit pick up their kids from daycare? Can you buckle a carseat into the seat of a public bus?

      • Sensei

I’m WFH all except 2 days.

My train and parking those two days is close to $60.

Reason being I can’t amortize my $500/yr parking cost over more days. I also pay daily rate on my train. A monthly was $275.

Remember this when people talk about cheap public transportation.

On the plus side I’ve burned $6 the last 31 days driving the Tesla to the train station and around town.

      • The Bearded Hobbit

I’ve burned $6 the last 31 days driving the Tesla to the train station and around town.

How do you derive your charging costs from your normal light bill? I’ve spent 35 years trying to figure out my annual heating costs (all electric) from the rest of my power. Hint: It’s somewhere around $750 per year, which I think is super-cheap.

      • Sensei

Car tracks it plus I put a meter on the outlet.

The former flagship McDonald’s in Moscow reopens tomorrow.

But by the time McDonald’s pulled out this year, its Russian stores were getting almost all of their ingredients from Russian suppliers. So when McDonald’s, which employed 62,000 workers in Russia, announced in March that it was suspending operations because it could not “ignore the needless human suffering unfolding in Ukraine,” one of its Siberian franchisees, Aleksandr Govor, was able to keep his 25 restaurants open. Last month, he bought the entire Russian business of McDonald’s for an undisclosed sum.

On Sunday — Russia Day, a patriotic holiday — he will reopen 15 stores, including the former flagship McDonald’s on Moscow’s Pushkin Square, the place where, in 1990, thousands of Soviets famously lined up for a taste of the West. The chain will operate under a still-to-be-disclosed new brand, though the new logo has been unveiled, said to represent a hamburger and French fries.

The hash browns will go by a Russian name, according to a menu leaked to a Russian tabloid. And, since the secret sauce is proprietary, there will be no Big Mac on offer.

    • R.J.

Secret sauce is delivered in a special football, from an undisclosed location in the Kremlin.

    • Nephilium

They can’t figure out how to add pickles to thousand island dressing?

      • rhywun

The one thing I liked about a Big Mac is all the other ingredients smothered the taste of the burger.

I solved that by going to Wendy’s.

Back in the before times when I worked in Manhattan and had a zillion choices for lunch, I hit Mickey D’s maybe a half dozen times in the early twenty-teens – it was my first time there in decades.

      • LCDR_Fish

Not $1 any more, but still a fan of picking up a couple McDoubles and maybe a 4 pk of chicken nuggets when I’m in the mood for very fast/cheap.

This guy has interesting videos. No idea about the actual food quality but the employees are a step up from the ones around here.

  14. Evan from Evansville

At my parents’ place in Carmel. They are beyond loving and supportive. Thankfully, I have a monumental shrine that gets all the herbal sacrament available. Good for the brain and the leg.

At least I get to rest a lot. My dad is planning on some big family trip to West Virginia with our family +bro’s wife and their three boys. And me. All of the things to do with by physically off-limits to me. So. Um. No? I don’t want to go to do WATCH other people do what I would want to do but am currently VERY ill-advised to do. (Think water rafting.)

I’m going to try to get this to be a 5-day period where I can actually have my own place. Three months unemployed/homeless, living in a hotel or with Lady when she’d have me, always bouncing around. Then a flight to the US, then a family airbnb and now my parents’ house…I just want some privacy.

Things really are as well as they could be, all considering. Just checking in.

    Hi!

    …Bye. For how.

    • R.J.

Good to hear from you. Rest up!

      You and DEG at Oaks?

      • Sean

        Yup, along with my gf.

Yet again, she was the only one to actually purchase a firearm with two Glibs present. Sure, mitigating statements can be made…but officially this is the truth.

Picked up a beefsteak tomato plant, and a Roma, betting that our volunteers from last season are predominately grape/cherry size; also planted a couple of jalapeno plants (one already has fruit and flowers). Dinner was pork chops with portabello mushrooms (deglazed with calvados), and asparagus from our local Amish farm, and a glass of Erath Pinot Noir.

    • Sean

We’ve got a blackcherry tomato plant anchored to the roof fascia on the deck. It’s like 8 feet tall.

    • pistoffnick

Ribeye grilled, then topped with blue cheese, also grilled broccoli. Still hungry.

Moved two trailer loads from my ex-wife’s garage. Knees sore, back sore. One motorcycle moved and ready for cheaper daily transportation. The other motorcycle (my first, you always remember your first!) is…problematic.

Herbs and veggies still need to be transplanted.

Too cold to paint, but I sanded and prepped the rust spots on my truck. I will apply Naval jelly tomorrow and wait until it is warm enough to paint. The cab corners are nearly rusted through – sometimes I wish Minnesoda didn’t salt their roads.

Girlfriend’s daughter has a graduation party tomorrow. If the weather is nice, I’ll ride the motorcycle (50+ mpg) up, if not, I’ll take the truck (14 mpg, I drive like a maniac)

Still planning for a trip to S.P.’s celebration of life.

Ladybugs have been deployed. Wave 1.

    • The Bearded Hobbit

The only time that I tried my ladybugs departed about Day 0.5.

    • Fourscore

I had 1000s upon 1000s of lady bugs overwintered in my garage. I was vacuuming them off the walls, ceiling and corners by the handful. I see today most have managed to sneak out but still lots left.

  19. hayeksplosives

Spent a fairly relaxed but errand-filled day. Started at the VFW swap meet picking up a bunch of 9mm FMJ for target practice, some .22 “long rifle” for my lovely Browning, .357 magnum because why not, and a box of 12 gauge slugs. Then on to Wally World for water softener salt, Dollar Tree for those action figures CPRM outlined this morning, then to the winery for wine slushies (it was 101F by then), finally home to some jambalaya and then a swim in the pool.

I only just came back inside from drying off on a lounge in the shade, listening to the breeze move through the trees. Sounds like waves lapping the ocean. Blue, blue skies.

    Bliss.

    • Tundra

      Lovely day!

      Kinda nice here, too!

Local Tap House has wine slushies. My wife made me promise to stop her after one. I have no intention of doing so!

Sounds like it. Always wanted to have a pool but the hot tub is close. Can’t do laps in it but I do a soak every evening just before bed.

When I was younger, during the winter when there was a snowbank on the deck, I would soak in the tub until I was nice a sweaty and then open the door and flop into the snow. After a short time I would get back into the hot tub.

      As you say, bliss.

    • Ted S.

      You’ve got trees in Pahrump?

      • hayeksplosives

Yeah, a big box Elder and several palm trees.

I’ll be right there with a bowl and fork!

Ex-Mrs. pistoffnick did her psych internship with a delightful lady from Louisiana. She taught us how to make jambalaya and etouffee. She also introduced me to Tony Chacherie’s Cajun seasoning which I use for almost every meal.

  22. Mythical Libertarian Woman

Greetings Glibertarians. As you may or may not know, I have mostly been on Discord, and I stopped doing the Woke Charmed recaps because it stopped being woke and therefore stopped being funny. Then it got good but then they killed Macy and I got mad so we shall not speak of it.

HOWEVER. The new TV adaptation of Tony Hillerman’s Navajo mystery books is premiering tomorrow and I am already poised to be big mad about it because They Changed Things and How Fucking Dare They. I am screaming about it on Discord but no one there has read the books so no one there appreciates how mad I am about it. Does anyone here read Hillerman and would anyone be interested in me doing a write-up about it if (after I watch it, just to give it a fair shake) it winds up sucking and I remain as angry about it as I am currently?

    • Nephilium

Hey MLW! Welcome back to the site.

I read three or four of them years ago, I don’t recall much, seems they were decent police/detective stories, heavy on the injun stuff but I guess that was the point or his thing or whatever.

    • The Bearded Hobbit

First, welcome back MLW! You were missed.

The Hillerman books have been on my reading list for a very long time now, largely because they are set in the desert southwest where I live. When my uncle died I got a bunch of his hardbounds but they were very much later in the series. If I’m going to start a series then I want to start on Book#1.

      • The Bearded Hobbit

You have to keep in mind: When was the film version ever as good as the book?

My reaction would be along the lines of, “Prepare to be disappointed”.

      • Mythical Libertarian Woman

The PBS version was totally fine! They just took the book and put it on the tv! That’s all I wantttttt

      • cavalier973

Three movies were better than the book, in my opinion:
        The Princess Bride
        The Wizard of Oz
        Mary Poppins

      • Zwak, who counted all his blessings, and counted only one.

        Blade Runner.

Sufficiently different, so not sure if that counts.

      • The Hyperbole

        Moby Dick
any movie based on The Bible

      • cavalier973

        Does that include Veggie Tales?

      • Mojeaux

any movie based on The Bible

        Sad to have to agree.

      • cavalier973

“Deuteronomy: The Movie!” was kind of hard to follow, though.

      • Mojeaux

        I laughed.

      • Nephilium

        Fight Club

      • cavalier973

I don’t want to talk about that book

      • pistoffnick

        *what you did*
        must not be talked about

      • Mythical Libertarian Woman

I inherited my grandpa’s and they were also later in the series. I started with them, though, haha. This is a series it doesn’t matter too much where you start, other than the state of Chee’s progressing love interests.

WHICH IS PART OF WHAT I’M MAD ABOUT *shakes fist*

    • Q Continuum

New Mexico born-and-raised so I’ve read them all. I didn’t know they were doing a TV version but I’m sure they’ll probably fuck it up. I’d love for you to do a write up.

    • UnCivilServant

Well, welcome back to the main site.

That discord just seems so cut off from here, I forget it’s around.

Anyway, I never read the books, but am interested in content.

    • Mojeaux

      See? You need us.

    • Mythical Libertarian Woman

I went ahead and wrote a rant. I’ll still watch the show and mention in the comments whether I liked it or not, but my rant will still stand because the thing I’m mad about is definitely going to be an issue, even if the show is otherwise enjoyable. So I’m just waiting to hear back from the editors about whether I’m good to post it or not.

    • Gender Traitor

The new TV adaptation of Tony Hillerman’s Navajo mystery books is premiering tomorrow

      Where???!?

Probably some premium streaming service I don’t get. ?

Read a bunch of the books a few years ago before/after our trip to SW CO/NW NM, so definitely interested in seeing the new adaptation and/or reading about it! (And welcome back, MLW! Don’t be any a stranger!

      • Gender Traitor

        ::practices her DDG fu::

Ooh. AMC. I can watch that!

Now, the million dollar question: Do I WANT to watch that? MLW has made me nervous.

      • Mythical Libertarian Woman

In some regards it looks good, and maybe it will be? But from the early reviews from The Critics™️, they’re all saying that Chee…

        They…

So you know how Janet Pete wanted him to leave the res and move to DC and assimilate with the white man and drive an expensive car and wear an expensive suit?

Pretend that he did that. Only not for Janet Pete, just, you know. Because he wanted to. For reasons. And now he’s coming back as a stranger to the Navajo ways and has to learn them as an outsider.

That’s? Not? Chee? That’s 100% the antithesis of Chee. That’s not just a little character change, you have completely eradicated everything that made him Chee and turned him into someone else. He’s not training to be a shaman. He’s not the one who’s versed in Navajo customs and superstitions. He’s not Jim Chee. So I’m mad about it. I don’t see how I’m supposed to enjoy this as an adaptation of Leaphorn and Chee when that’s not Chee. And it has the side effect of making Leaphorn not Leaphorn and Bernie not Bernie, too, so. Yay.

    • Sensei

      Yes.

    • Fourscore

We all have, well most of us, have skeletons in the closet that we don’t want anyone to know about and it should be left there . A gentleman doesn’t talk about his conquests, a lady’s adventures are hers alone, to enjoy as necessary.

      • Brochettaward

The Bro has an impeccable history of conquests. I am not just more First than all Firsters, and especially the lot of Glibs who are mostly seconders, but also the most moral. And humble.

      • trshmnstr the terrible

At least in this case, I don’t think letting the past stay in the past was helpful. She had an illegitimate child via an affair that was ongoing for the early part of their marriage. She wasn’t just a shitty person for a short period 30 years ago. She was a shitty person every single day that she played along with the happy family facade knowing full well what the truth was. Then, in line with her low character, she gets to release the burden of guilt on her deathbed by dumping all that shit on her husband and daughter. At best, she was a coward to the extreme.

Did we zoom tonight? Are we still zooming?

    • Zwak, who counted all his blessings, and counted only one.

Yeah, I went over to the site I used to hang out at, which has progressed in a liberal way, and it wasn’t getting the traction among the liberatii that they hoped.

    • creech

It may be the ratings for the hearings suck, but every network’s evening news covers it in an abbreviated version that makes the mostly peaceful riot look like there were 10,000 enraged Trump supporters out to kill congress critters. No use of “alleged” wording but plenty of “deadly.” Has the hearings been effective? I know a number of 2020 Trump voters who have completely soured on him and (so they claim) will not be voting for him in 2024 if he gets the nomination.

      • Stinky Wizzleteats

If the American people are capable of having fantasy pounded into their heads via repetition of nonsense then we’re doomed no matter who wins. We’ll see but I get the impression that their effort is failing.

      • trshmnstr the terrible

Me included. Half because he’s a vax shill. Half because they need to FIX THE FUCKING ELECTION SYSTEM before I ever cast another ballot.

      • rhywun

This. As long as US elections are conducted under procedures that the US government condemns as fraudulent when other countries practice them, I will not participate.

That said, I hope Trump does not get the nomination.

      • Brochettaward

Look, the country is fucked no matter what. I’m just in this for the LOLs. Trump winning a second term would be lead to such pants-shitting hysteria from the left that I can’t help but want to see it come to pass.

      • rhywun

        Fair enough.

I gave up on brown liquor years ago. It makes me very mean spirited.

      • Trigger Hippie

Got it. Bookmarked and ready to start my Sunday morning with. I’ll give you a report then. Things are getting blurry right now.

For what it’s worth, I love SRV but I can’t call him the best guitarist ever. Different genres and different disciplines produce different levels of technical skill within a shared medium…or some such shit

My personal tastes place him as the third best blues guitarist behind B.B. King and R.L. Burnside.

      • pistoffnick

YOU BETTER THROW PRINCE AND ERIC CLAPTIN AND JOE WALSH ON THAT LIST!

    • Scruffy Nerfherder

That’s weird. I was listening to SRV yesterday after having not done so for over a year.

I bought a magnificent fuchsia hanging basket – in a color combination I’d never seen before: deep purple inner petals and yellow/cream outer petals – at the farmers’ market today. Went to water it, and the plant is so thick I couldn’t see where the edge of the pot was, so just took my best guess as I poured. Like a dummy, I slipped as I got down off the battered old step stool (that looks very much like this one) and landed on my butt on the patio, then rolled onto my back and bumped my head on the pavement. Luckily, I came out almost entirely unscathed – head doesn’t hurt at all, possibly thanks to thick hair. Only visible evidence is a tiny scrape on one elbow. But my butt hurts. At least that may keep me from sleeping on my back, which should cut down on the snoring.
