The names don’t even make sense.

Also, anyone know the cause of the posting errors?

Can anything be done on the client side?

      • Nephilium

Per Mojeaux, issue is with too many comments that need to be archived and we post too much, too quickly (per last night’s thread).

As it’s a 500 issue, that’s on the server side, nothing can be done client side to correct that.

      • Count Potato

We have way fewer commentators and fewer comments than when this site started though.

      • Nephilium

I’m just passing along the message. My guess is that’s it more the number of comments which is causing a timeout when posting a new comment (which would be exacerbated by people trying to post again after getting an error).

Weird how this has barely been covered by the news. Something tells me that if it was happening to abortion providers or supporters, it would be headline news in every outlet.

I did find an article on WaPo: https://www.washingtonpost.com/politics/2022/06/10/amid-tensions-over-roe-some-antiabortion-centers-are-being-attacked/

But since the leaked Supreme Court draft, there’s been a spate of suspected arson and vandalism against antiabortion groups and resource centers. Now, both sides of the abortion debate say they’re preparing for the potential for centers, clinics and headquarters to be attacked.

We must make it clear that “both sides” that are in equal danger.

Republicans have pounced on the issue, with 16 GOP senators urging the Department of Justice in a letter this week to investigate and work to prevent violence against antiabortion groups. The DOJ declined to comment.

      Republicans POUNCE!!!!

They round out the article with several paragraphs of examples and statistics of anti-abortion violence, in case you started to forget who the real bad guys are.

“Louisiana mother, 32, is ordered to pay child support to man who ‘RAPED her when she was 16’ – AND give him full custody of their teen daughter ‘because she bought her a cellphone’

Abelseth filed a sexual assault report in 2015 but Barnes was not convicted of rape or statutory rape, which applies in the state of Louisiana if the victim is under 17.

A judge granted him 50/50 custody but this year, he has been awarded full custody.

Abelseth claims it is because he is ‘well connected’ in the court system and accused her of improperly giving their daughter a cell phone. She is now fighting to regain custody of the 16-year-old.”

    https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-10917169/Woman-32-raped-16-30-year-old-man-ordered-custody-child.html

There has to be more to this story.

    • The Last American Hero

      The man is a rapist.

      #believeallwomen

    • Urthona

Giving a 16 year old a cell phone seems… not that uncommon.

Although I don’t think the judge can use anything about rape if he wasn’t actually convicted of it. That should remain a non-factor.

And the article should probably say “allegedly raped”. It includes only her side of the story.

      • Fatty Bolger

I don’t see why the judge couldn’t take the statutory rape into account, convicted or not. It’s not really in dispute, the dates are easily proven.

      • Ownbestenemy

Wouldn’t that fall under the assumption that he knew she was 16 and she hadn’t lied to be in the bar with a fake ID? Or does that not matter?

      • Fatty Bolger

I looked it up, and apparently it is not a valid defense:

Louisiana law defines felony carnal knowledge of a juvenile as “sexual intercourse with consent” between someone who is 17 or older and another person between the ages of 13 and 16 when the difference in their ages is four years or greater. Thus, a 19-year-old could be prosecuted for having consensual sex with a 15-year-old, even if they dated in high school and planned to marry.
Like other sex crimes, claiming to be unaware of the younger person’s age is not a viable statutory rape defense. The punishment for felony carnal knowledge of a juvenile can be a fine of up to $5,000, a prison term of up to 10 years, or both.

    • Fatty Bolger

I’m sure there’s a lot more to it but there’s no question that he was guilty of statutory rape, because the age of consent in that state is 17. So why wasn’t he charged? It would be easy to prove.

      • Ownbestenemy

If I were to speculate, like our media does. He was 22 and she 16. She had fake ID and even played the part of a 21 year old coed. Had sex with him got pregnant. He found out 6 years later he has a kid and ask for paternity test and then spend the next 4 years fighting for some form of custody and got the 50/50

Now the ‘phone issue’ is probably what she throws out, but since they have court/police/medical documents posted all over that article…but nothing from the recent ruling where she lost the custody, my guess is she screwed up in some way with their 50/50 agreement.

And I didn’t even go to journalism class.

      • rhywun

        Except he was 30.

      • Ownbestenemy

Sorry, I backward math that wrong…still point stands…I was shameless at 30 and trying to bag 21/22 year olds..or those I thought were and assumed since they were in a bar.

      • Mojeaux

        He was 22

        Article says he was 30.

Even if the age of consent is 16, there’s a buffer between 16 and x age where it’s kosher, say, if she’s 16 and he’s 19-20 (as an example), anything over that is statutory. In Missouri, age of consent is 17. Per a random govt website, in Missouri “14, 15, and 16 year olds cannot consent to sex with persons age 21 and older.”

      • Ownbestenemy

No I agree. I was just speculating and already realized I messed up his age, but this is all on the assumption that the girl was honest about her age while drinking in a bar and not passing herself off as a 21+ year old and found herself in a bad situation.

“The proposal I’m developing would help reverse perverse incentives to price gouge by doubling the corporate tax rate on companies’ excess profits, eliminating egregious buybacks, and reducing accounting tricks,” Wyden said.

Such a move could be popular given that oil company profits are surging, and gasoline prices are at record highs.

However, there is a risk that imposing an additional tax on the oil industry would backfire by depressing investment at a time when companies need to spend more on expensive new drilling projects to keep up with demand.

    You don’t say.

Those advisers, including Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen, knew that after the last recession, from 2007 to 2009, the government hadn’t done enough to boost the economy, which sputtered along for years.

Yeah, that’s why it sputtered along. Come on. Anybody who says that has to be either clueless or lying.

The fiscal firepower they endorsed in 2021 was supposed to trigger a faster recovery.

They knew this, not believed it, they knew this because it is a fact. And then they admit that the vast expenditures to boost the economy in 2021 didn’t really have the desired effect. They are, of course, incapable of admitting that what the government needs to do to boost the economy is get out of the way.
