Mrs. S was going on about the Jan 6 hearings last night. My response: The 2020 election did reveal a big threat to democracy, but not the one everyone thinks. The real threat is that, in a country of 330 million people, after 18 months and $1B of campaigning, the best we can do is a choice between Donald Fucking Trump or Joe Fucking Biden. THAT’s the problem.

      • The Other Kevin

Agreed. In theory those were supposed to be the “best” candidate from each party.

      • Fatty Bolger

What if the ineptitude of our leaders is actually our strength?

For instance, our benign hegemony might no longer be considered benign with competent leadership. Inserting spies into the US government is child’s play, so we’re an open book to other nations. Consider Swalwell’s honey pot, Hillary’s emails, and so on. Other countries get an inside look at our leaders, and realize that they’re just a bunch of dopes they don’t need to fear. And the Pax Americana rolls on.

“I divide my officers into four groups. There are clever, diligent, stupid, and lazy officers. Usually two characteristics are combined. Some are clever and diligent — their place is the General Staff. The next lot are stupid and lazy — they make up 90 percent of every army and are suited to routine duties. Anyone who is both clever and lazy is qualified for the highest leadership duties, because he possesses the intellectual clarity and the composure necessary for difficult decisions. One must beware of anyone who is stupid and diligent — he must not be entrusted with any responsibility because he will always cause only mischief.”

I worry that we have a critical mass of stupid and diligent in DC.

Hawaii’s volcanic environments contain a rich array of mysterious microbes, new research this week has found. Scientists say that the islands’ lava caves and other structures created by volcanic activity have unique, diverse, and still uncharacterized communities of bacteria living inside them.

The thing that impressed me the most when I visited Hawai’i for the first time was how many buildings were quarried from the local volcanic stone instead of being made from concrete or whatever. Even the public restrooms at the park. I guess that’s why they call them lavatories.

Watch the local laws on knives. Double edged blades are often illegal.

      • Plisade

When my bro and I were still in high school, pops took us down to Ensenada for a long weekend. We each bought a switchblade and my dad freaked cuz they’re illegal in Cali. When we crossed back he actually declared the knives to the border patrol agent, who could have cared less, and let us in unmolested. I know pops was hoping the blades would be confiscated to teach us a lesson. I was surprised when he himself didn’t take them away.

      • Pine_Tree

The most effective way to get something past Customs (if one hypothetically needed to do that) is to walk up to them and open your luggage and show them that you bought something like a pack of batteries on your trip and “…look I filled out the paper even though it wasn’t worth much but I wanted to make sure..”

Customs guy: “Yeah, get out of here.”

      • grrizzly

I wanted to bring jamón ibérico from Madrid once. You cannot bring meat products from abroad. I wasn’t afraid of Customs guys, I was afraid of Customs dogs.

A friend from Austria came with a whole bunch of pork products. Customs took nearly all of it. Welcome to America. I’m sure the Customs agents had a feast.

    • Timeloose

I would buy a bunch of cheap ones and put them in every vehicle, home, garage. Buy 10 for the price of one really good one and then buy one really good one that can be sharpened and used for years of use.

      • db

Yeah, I was looking for some relatively inexpensive options that can be put in an emergency pack and left in each vehicle. I don’t want to have to think about whether my emergency kit is complete before I go out.

      • EvilSheldon

If you want relatively inexpensive, get a Mora Kansbol 13505 bushcraft knife and a Corona RazorTooth folding hand saw. You’ll be out around fifty bucks per vehicle.

      • Zwak doesn't know what to ignite and what to extinguish

I think Gerber has a cheap (read Chinese) model. I keep on in the truck.

    • Tonio

Remember that saw blades need not be rigid; I’ve seen survival saws which are made of wire with a ring on each end. Those are sometimes included in the hollow handle of survival knife kits.

We must make an example of him

Former Trump White House aide Steve Bannon was found guilty Friday of two counts of contempt of Congress after a trial in federal court in Washington, D.C.

Jurors deliberated for less than three hours before convicting Bannon of willfully failing to comply with subpoenas demanding his testimony and records, which were issued last September by the House select committee investigating the Jan. 6, 2021, riot at the U.S. Capitol by supporters of then-President Donald Trump.

He faces a minimum punishment of 30 days in jail, and a maximum of one year when he is sentenced on Oct. 21. He also faces a fine in the range of $100 to a maximum of $100,000

Bow down, peasant, or face the consequences.

    • WTF

      Third world banana kakistocracy.

      • Stinky Wizzleteats

But I have nothing but contempt of congress. I’m not going to prison am I? I’m too pretty for that, they’ll eat me alive.

      • Toxteth O'Grady

        Become a trusty? Jailhouse lawyer?

    • JasonAZ

He should get the exact same penalty as Eric Holder got for his contempt of Congress.

      • hayeksplosives

My thoughts exactly. When they found Holder in contempt, I was ready for some real consequences.

        And nothing else happened.

      • Chafed

That’s exactly the problem. Holder should have been punished and so should Bannon.

      • grrizzly

Bannon has done nothing wrong. There’s no reason to punish him. He ignored a subpoena issued by a sham J6 committee.

      • Chafed

Are you telling me the committee lacks the lawful authority to subpoena witnesses?

      • grrizzly

Yes, if the committee itself is illegitimate.

The January 6 Committee is an Illegitimate Operation

The Democrats, in a half-hearted attempt at bipartisanship, promised that there would be 13 members on the Committee, five of whom would be Republicans. An 8-5 split on the Committee doesn’t reflect the actual ratio of Democrats to Republicans in the House, but we have grown accustomed to Pelosi’s disregard of institutional norms of ratios reflecting the make-up of the House.

The promise by Pelosi turned out to be untrue because when Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy named his five nominees to the Committee, Pelosi booted two of them off. The other three Republicans rightfully rejected participating in the witch-hunt in protest.

In response, Pelosi appointed two former Republicans, Liz Cheney and Adam Kinzinger, to fill the Committee. These two have a more virulent strain of Trump Derangement Syndrome than any of the Far Left in Congress. And, that’s really saying something.

      • Gustave Lytton

In a just world with a rule of law or the upside down wonderland where private individuals are property of the US government?

Congressional subpoena power is limited to government employees related to their employment or use of their office and contractors for the scope of their contracts. Everyone else can tell them to fuck right off with impunity. They are the hired help, not masters.

      • PutridMeat

No congressional committee should have the lawful authority to demand a citizen appear before them with threat of violence if they don’t. Ignoring congress should never be a crime.

      • PutridMeat

Or what Gustave said, more eloquently.

    • dorvinion

The cat was in the backyard underbrush when suddenly there was a bit of a dust up happening there. A young cottontail bunny shot out of the brush and went straight over the edge of the pool ~splash!~

Bunny doggy(?) paddled in the pool, attempting to get out, which was impossible with the vertical face 4-5 inches high between the water and the pavement. Cat came over and tried to hook the bunny under one arm.

Fortunately for bunny, husband was in the pool and scooped the bunny into the net we use for leaf removal. He let bun-bun go in one of the grassy common areas in the neighborhood.

I had found a dead bunny a few months ago and thought “surely Felix isn’t skilled enough to get a bunny.” Looks like I was wrong about that.

    • slumbrew

      Fuzzy murder machines.

    • Tonio

Domestic cats, particularly the larger ones, can take a bunny. A friend was regularly gifted with dead or almost-dead rabbits by her cat.

My little tortie goes for bigger rabbits. I wish she’d do squirrels. I hate it when she kills bunnies.

      • hayeksplosives

Torties seem to have cornered the Barn Cat market. They are extremely good hunters and can struggle through hard times.

My tortie was a bit of an idiot, but man could she hunt.

    • JasonAZ

You’d be shocked at how a cat’s instincts take over for hunting prey. Especially, for mamma cats. Every time a mamma cat has a litter, they turn into a hunting machine. Nothing like waking up to a bird, rabbit or bat in the house. Yes, bats.

      • hayeksplosives

Felix likes to bring live lizards into the house, not to present as trophies or offerings, but to play with for hours.

I think he might do well with a companion kitty.

      • JasonAZ

Haha! Then you’ll have 2, 3 or 4 cats all trying to get the lizard out from under the couch when they lose it. My cats used to love to play with the lizards, but only ate the tails. Weirdo cats.

“If Texas can ban abortion and endanger lives, California can ban deadly weapons of war and save lives,” Newsom wrote in a tweet.
    […]
If they are going to use this framework to put women’s lives at risk, we are going to use it to save people’s lives here in the state of California. That’s the spirit, the principle, behind this law,” Newsom said during a press conference to sign the bill.

      • grrizzly

Nope. You absolutely need to bring your own people and place them in every available position while firing as many government bureaucrats as possible. Everything else is a recipe for disaster as we saw during the Trump administration.

      • Tonio

I interpreted TOK’s comment as meaning the only way to drain the swamp is to eliminate positions, programs, and agencies. Perhaps even entire departments.

      • grrizzly

You need to have your own people who will work on implementing these things. One President is not enough to eliminate anything. You need people who will know how to shut down programs and positions without immediately violating laws and existing regulations. And, of course, Congressional Republicans–with a couple of exceptions–are on the side of the administrative state.

What does stupidity of Team Red voters have to do with Schedule F? At least Schedule F is a plausible way of fighting against the administrative state. That’s more than one can say about the other potential GOP presidential candidates.

    • hayeksplosives

Trump later told the Daily Caller that Bolton was a “dumb maniac who wants to go to war with any anybody that can breathe.”

Well, he was right about that.

      Still hope he won’t run.

      • JasonAZ

Trump is a bozo, but he said some shit that nobody would dare. And, he broke people with TDS, which brings out their true selves.

My fav quote (not exact): “The MSM is the enemy of the United States!”

    • juris imprudent

We already know that only the appointee level serve at the President’s pleasure. Not the SES (which would be the level you would need to apply this to) or the civil service (which the top of is regularly skimmed to fill the SES ranks).

    • hayeksplosives

      That was awesome.

      I love Bill Burr.

      • TARDis

        Why? There’s no reason.

      • hayeksplosives

He makes me laugh. He’s a comedian, so that’s all I require of him.

    • Urthona

      He’s actually right. Weird .

      • hayeksplosives

Bill Burr has a lot of insight on thorny problems. His wife is African American so his pieces on race are always good for laughs and for reflection.

I’m on vacation and in a different time zone, so just now going through links – regarding this mornings Houston ATM shooter, I think he should be charged with manslaughter, but if he is/has shown remorse, I don’t think it does anyone any good to lock him up, give him probation. Also, he should be sued and will lose. You can’t pay a civil loss if you are locked up. And while money won’t bring the child back, locking the guy up for 10 years does even less towards providing justice for the family.

    • Lackadaisical

      That’s a fair take.

Thoughts on removing his right to a firearm? Is that something that happens in Texas for any felony?

      • DrOtto

I believe all felonies and domestic assault gross misdemeanors.

      • DrOtto

And I think his poor judgment has shown he probably shouldn’t have a firearm outside of his household.

  18. The Late P Brooks

How many cats do you have?

None, now. All gone to Kitty Heaven.

At one time I had ten. Two females I was asked to “temporarily” care for (There was this girl, see?) who had litters of three and five. I ended up keeping the two mothers and three of the kittens. We were a big happy family for many years.

    • Urthona

I hope you live on a farm somewhere.

    • Urthona

Child labor should be perfectly legal.

For this and other extremely unpopular opinions, follow me.

      • Sean

Wake me up when you start your TED talk.

    • JasonAZ

But isn’t this the kind of open borders that Reason tells me is Libertarian Utopia?

      • Mustang

        Thank you Trashy.

Look, Jason…Jason is it? Maybe you’re new here, maybe you’re not. I don’t really know anything. But whatever you do, don’t do that. That’s Winston’s shtick.

      • JasonAZ

        haha! got it.

      • juris imprudent

Look it isn’t Winston you have to worry about, it’s his mom – she’ll cut you dude.

      • MikeS

But what a way to go.

      • Fourscore

        “She’ll cut you”off

      • rhywun

They’re just taking the jobs that American children won’t do.

      • MikeS

        ALOL!

    • Sensei

      Go Tide!

      Sorry, wrong reply?

  19. Gustave Lytton

Got an email from the annual conference/trade show I was going to next week that due to the local county being marked red by the CDC, they are going to require facemasks except when eating or drinking. I think I’ve got enough work to do that I’m going to skip it. Was looking forward to catching up with some people I haven’t seen since before COVID. Good news is I didn’t prepay so just going to no show.

    • creech

Make your non-attendance known to the conference organizers. This shit will never stop until they realize their customers are fed up.

  20. Fourscore

I’ve been saying for 30-40 years that each new election will be won by a person worse than those defeated. As we ponder who could be worse than the present president? It doesn’t take very long for Kamala/Newsome/Buttigieg to pop up. While it should be showtime for the Republicans the churches of the Democrats/Republicans will still vote the same way their parents did.

So far I haven’t been proven wrong

    • juris imprudent

Or as I put it after we’d lived under the new administration a while the Republic has survived worse. I stopped doing that because the Republic kept taking it as a challenge.

    • juris imprudent

No, no, it can’t be an STD – that isn’t scary enough, particularly one tied to men having sex with men (cis, trans, fluid, ambiguous or whatever).

      • rhywun

My link keeps getting rejected but the not-Bee had some fun watching the MSM dancing around this yesterday.

    • juris imprudent

At least he’s being punished, and not promoted.

    • juris imprudent

So that’s how far he’s mentally regressed?

    • Timeloose

Who’s a big boy who finished his whole plate…”I’m a big boy”.

    • Fourscore

Did he turn over the reins of power to the First Woman of Color to be acting prez? See if she hops on AF1 and head down to the border.

  21. Rebel Scum

I am sure nothing bad can come of this.

Biden’s Energy Secretary: “We’re witnessing the beginning of one of the most significant events in human history.”

Biden Energy Secretary Granholm: The Clean Energy Transition “Can’t Progress Fast Enough”

    • rhywun

These people sure do have a RADICAL CHANGE! boner. Like every good commie.

  22. Rebel Scum

    Someone translate this please…

“We are addressing the things that we address and we have to address it at the mayoral federal level and we’re doing it every day.”

      • Rebel Scum

I understand her gift is more of the oral variety as opposed to oratory.

  23. Rebel Scum

So they are going to off him then.

Joe Biden’s doctor said Friday he has stopped heart medications for Biden’s atrial fibrillation and high cholesterol due to his prescribing Paxlovid to treat Biden’s COVID infection. Atrial fibrillation can cause strokes and is treated by blood thinners to reduce the risk of stroke-causing blood clots being formed. Biden,79, had brain surgery in 1988 after suffering two brain aneurysms. Biden has been in cognitive decline in recent and even without a stroke a bout with COVID could accelerate the decline with COVID-related brain fog or “Long COVID”, impairing Biden’s “executive function” ability.

    • Sean

Nope, CommaLa with a pillow in the study.

    • Scruffy Nerfherder

At least this won’t be JFK style

  24. The Late P Brooks

    Mencken got there first, fourscore:

“As democracy is perfected, the office of president represents, more and more closely, the inner soul of the people. On some great and glorious day the plain folks of the land will reach their heart’s desire at last and the White House will be adorned by a downright moron.”

    • Fourscore

Probably where I stole it but a really long time ago. Mencken was early, we’re seeing the prognostication in real time.
